Work Text:

“Commander?” Cody looked up from his datapad at his tentative interrupter. He was pretty sure he recognized the paint job, but he couldn’t place him in the haze of sleep deprivation that followed a long fought campaign.

“Yes trooper?” Cody prompted, hoping that nothing had gone drastically wrong. Given the trooper’s hesitancy, it didn’t seem likely.

“I’ve got two pieces of information to give you sir.” The trooper said. He sounded a lot more well rested than Cody was. “But one can wait for later.”

“You might as well just give them both to me now.” Cody opened a new document and prepped to write things down.

“Yes sir. The first is that the General has requested your presence in the mess tent. The second is that I’ve chosen a name!”

“Congratulations.” Cody said. The vod's grin was infectious and Cody felt his own smile stretch across his face. “If you give me your name and number, I’ll update the system when I have the chance.”

“CT-5129 sir.” The vod's grin widened. Cody placed the number as belonging to one of the artillery gunners that had been charged with keeping the command team updated on their perimeter over the course of the campaign. “My name is Kot, like strength in Mando’a, but it’s also the local word for cat.”

“That’s a good name.” Cody said, noting it down and clapping Kot on the shoulder. “And thank you for passing on the message from the General.”

“Of course sir.” Kot saluted, still beaming. Cody returned the complement and they went their separate ways.

Notes:

Mando’a
vod - brother
Kot - strength
