Notes:

Guess who's back? It's a me! And I've become significantly more unhinged than you've seen me last time!
I meant to post this earlier, but I've been pretty busy these last couple weeks. Though I have started posting more weilin to my tumblr (wilcze-kudly if you're curious).
Anyway I've kinda been utching to write some Weilin or something to do with the Beifongs in general.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: People Talk

Chapter Text

Bolin was tired. So, so tired. Scratch that, he was EXHAUSTED. He slumped against a pile of boxes, watching the smoke rise from the burning refugee camp through his drooping eyelids.

Technically, a triad raid was a normal part of the recent turf wars. But this would be the first time the refugee camp had been targeted, since there was barely anything to gain from attacking such a poor settlement, full as it was of people who had already lost almost everything.

Therefore it had been a gruesome surprise to get a call from the camp, reporting an attack from the Agni Kai triad. A large portion of the Police Force, including Bolin and Mako, had peeled off to help fight off the raid.

By the time they'd gotten there, a quarter of the settlement had already been on fire. Thankfully, the triad members were rather easily contained by the combined forces of the Police Force and the Air Nomads. Unfortunately, but predictably, there were injuries. Bolin wasn't sure about casualties. He didn't exactly want to know.

He felt someone place a hand in his shoulder. Bolin spun around a little too quickly, still impossibly tense after the fight and the still rising flames of the tents.

But he breathed easy when greeted by bright moss-green eyes set in a handsome olive face. - Whoa! Easy there, officer. - Wei soothed, raising his empty hands in a placating gesture, though there was a teasing lilt to his voice.

- Wei!- Bolin breathed, pulling his boyfriend into a hug, kissing his forehead. He'd been deeply worried for Wei when he heard about the raid, knowing that the metalbender spent a lot of time in the camp.

- Hey, sunshine. - Wei murmured, pulling back just enough to quickly peck at Bolin's lips. - How's the cutest guy on the police force doing?- he purred, resting a hand on Bolin's hip.

- Could be better, thanks for asking.- Mako piped in from where he'd been settled on a box, filling out a report with an exasperated look on his face. Bolin was more than happy to let his older brother handle the paperwork. It made his head hurt anyway.

Wei chuckled, cocking his head to glance at the firebender. - Hello to you too, Mako.- he greeted, brandishing a stack of papers he pulled out of the bag slung over his shoulder. - Aunt Lin wanted me to give this to you.-

Mako grabbed the papers with a grumble, immediately getting lost in them, russet eyes skimming over the multitude of tiny letters.

- Just here to deliver some papers, honeybun? - Bolin asked, rubbing his nose against Wei's, making the metalbender giggle.

- Officially yes. But I don't think anyone would mind if I stuck around a little. And aunt Lin told me that you got hurt, so I brought these. - came the answer, as Wei pulled a roll of bandages from the bag.

- Aww, you're so sweet. - Bolin cooed, pecking at Wei's cheek, just beneath a faint red scrape mark. They were both a little banged up, littered with cuts, bruises and even light burns. Nothing awfully serious, but enough to bring back upsetting memories of injuries far more severe.

- Are Opal and your dad...?- Bolin asked, wanting to cover all bases before he fully relaxed.
- They're both fine.- Wei allayed his concerns as they sat on a box toghether. -And I'm pretty sure none of the airbenders are badly injured, either.-

Bolin breathed a sigh of relief, running a hand through his sweaty hair. - Good. That's good.- he muttered, letting his hand fall limp by his side. - Spirits, I'm just glad no one died today. -

- Ditto. We got lucky.- Wei answered, pursing his lips as he pulled Bolin's hand into his lap, investigating the faint burn on the inside of his forearm. - How much does it hurt?-

Bolin grinned at his boyfriend, endeared by his worry. - It's a little sore, but I can deal. -
- You don't have to.- Wei murmured, loosely wrapping the bandage around Bolin's forearm. The lavabender hissed as the material brushed against a sensitive blister. Wei muttered an apology, before changing the subject. - Tell me about your most recent heroics, officer?-

Bolin immediately perked up. - Oh, we actually raided a warehouse that was storing weapons for the Triple Threats! Did you know that they're trying to gather.... - he gladly rambled on about his and Mako's newest exploits, enthusiasm blocking out whatever pain having his wound wrapped caused.

Wei would hum and murmur responses, diligently treating Bolin's wound. In no time, the deed was done and Wei secured the bandage in place. Bolin had barely noticed, too lost in his own chattering.
- There we goooo.- Wei drawled, bending a fragment of his necklace into a sharp point and snipping the bandage length off.

- Thanks, bun.- Bolin chirped as Wei put the bandage back in his bag.
- Always. - the metalbender smiled, leaning in as Bolin placed a hand against his cheek.

Taken by a sudden need to feel his boyfriend's lips, Bolin leant down to press a chaste kiss to Wei's lips, pulling back after but a soft, sweet second.
Only for Wei to inch forward, fling his arms over Bolin's shoulders and kiss him again. Deeply, fervidly. Tenderly. Bolin was more than welcoming, looping his arms around Wei's waist and pulling them flush against one another.

Tension spilled away into nothingness as Bolin felt Wei's warm, strong body against him. Bolin moaned quietly as Wei's fingers started rubbing circles into the back of his neck, a habit the meralbender had quickly developed during their time dating. It always eased away the stress and nerves that kept Bolin's spine rigid, always made him into putty under those firm yet gentle fingertips.

Wanting to reciprocate the comforting feeling of touch and companionship, Bolin nudged his tongue past Wei's lips. Wei allowed him entrance with a small whine, tilting his head to the side, making himself even more accessible.

Bolin grinned into the kiss, delighting in the softness of Wei's welcoming mouth. Wei was pretty much hanging off him, arms around his neck, keen and amorous. Bolin moved one hand to Wei's hip, holding on tight, stroking his thumb along the outline of the delicate bone. He moaned as Wei lightly dug his nails into his nape, not hard enough to actually hurt, but leaving delicious little pinpricks in his skin.

- You two. We are in public.- Mako hissed, peering at them disapprovingly from behind his paperwork. The firebender had been the unfortunate witness to much of Wei and Bolin's lovestruck shenanigans.

Bolin reluctantly pulled back, casting at teasing grin towards his big brother. - Aw, jealous?- he jived, settling to take Wei's hand as the metalbender chuckled quietly.

Mako rolled his eyes, dangerous glint in their russet hues. - Yeah, actually. Jealous that you're not doing any of the paperwork we're supposed to do toghether. - the firebender thoughtfully knit his eyebrows and Bolin tried to look as innocent as he could. But it was no use, Mako was already holding a sheet of paper out to him.

- Noooo, you know I suck at reports. - Bolin whined but Mako only smirked sardonically.

- Practice makes perfect, little bro.- the firebender quipped, a subtle upward quirk to his lips. - If you're gonna be a good cop you need to know how to write up reports.-

Bolin grumbled quietly, grabbing the paper and a pen. He glanced at Wei questioningly, curious if the metalbender would stay with him through this less than interesting activity.

- I'll stay, if you don't mind. - Wei said, cocking his head in an open, questioning manner.
Bolin smiled, clicking the pen, already dreading the ensuing tedium. At least Wei's presence would make things much more pleasant. - I don't mind. You won't get bored?-
Wei shook his head, leaning against Bolin's side. - Nah, I think I could do with some peace and quiet. -

Bolin hummed in agreement, focusing on the stupid report, glaring at the blank paper, as if he could scare it into filling itself out. He stumbled over a rudimentary retelling of the day's events.

Bolin was good at telling stories, so he quickly got into the swing of it. He was not, however good at writing. Despite his best efforts, his handwriting was rather poor and spelling wasn't his best suit. He hadn't exactly had much incentive to practice calligraphy when he was growing up.

Case in point:
- You misspelled 'equipment'.- Wei pointed out from where he was occasionally glancing at the report over Bolin's shoulder.
Crap. - oh. Oh, yeah. Thanks. - Bolin rubbed the back of his neck, sheepish as he corrected the mistake.
- Happens to the best of us.- Wei comforted, going back to bending his necklace into random little shapes.

Bolin would've liked to let himself become transfixed by the mesmerising shifts of the glistening steel and the graceful movements of Wei's dexterous hands. But he did have a job to do, after all.

...Stupid report.

In his defence, Bolin did do his best to focus on the paper. But he quickly found his mind wandering.

- Are we still on for this Saturday? - he asked off-handedly, doodling on the paper's corner. Beside him, Wei stiffened, the metal he'd been manipulating stilling beneath his hands.

- Visiting your family?- the metalbender made sure. Bolin nodded, turning to smile at his boyfriend over his shoulder.

A couple days ago, Bolin and Mako had gotten an invitation to come over for dinner at their grandmother's. And Bolin, seeing his opportunity, asked if he could bring someone over. Yin had been more than happy to host her grandsons' friend as well.

Yeah. Friend. Bolin planned to reveal his and Wei's relationship to his extended family. They'd been dating for almost two months now and Bolin felt confident enough to make that announcement.

- Of course I'm coming. - Wei confirmed, drumming his fingers on his knee. - I haven't seen your family in a while but they're all really nice. I just think that your grandmother...- Wei trailed off shaking his head.

Bolin furrowed his brows in confusion. He was pretty sure that Wei and grandma got along alright. She had even told Bolin to thank 'his sweet friend, the one with all the jewellery' for taking care of them when they were staying in Zaofu three years ago. - What about my grandma?-

- Never mind. Nothing.- Wei muttered, wringing his hands and fidgeting with his bracelets. Before Bolin could ask, Wei tapped his finger on the report. - You misspelled 'necessary' as well.-

Bolin inhaled sharply, checking over the paper. - Dang. - he muttered, hurriedly correcting the mistake. - Sorry.-

Wei snorted. - Why are you apologising to me? - he laughed, ruffling Bolin's hair. - You didn't do anything to hurt me, silly. -

Bolin shrugged compliantly. Wei was right, after all. Sometimes it was nice to have his boyfriend to point out the obvious like that. Sometimes Bolin needed it.

- Thanks. - Bolin smiled, gently pecking at Wei's lips. - I'm not so good with writing.- he muttered, embarrassed heat upon cheeks.

- Your vocabulary's good. - Wei soothed, patting Bolin's shoulder. - Though I'm not sure about these. - he smirked, pointing at Bolin's doodles marring the edges of the paper. -Don't get me wrong, they're very cute but I'm not sure aunt Lin will appreciate your artistic talent.-

Bolin flushed and chuckled, scratching his cheek with the pen. - You think they're cute?- he asked slyly.

Wei laughed, leaning in, nuzzling into Bolin's neck. - Everything about you is cute, sunshine.- he purred, trailing kisses up Bolin's throat to his cheek.

Wei pulled back a little, mossy eyes flicking down to Bolin's mouth, hands coming up to rest on his shoulders, fingers curling. Wei licked his lips and Bolin couldn't wait anymore.

He placed his hand on the back of Wei's neck and pulled him back in. Wei melted against him with a little moan. In no time, Bolin had his other hand on the small of Wei's back, guiding him closer. Wei was glad to shuffle over, straddling Bolin's lap, nibbling at the lavabender's bottom lip, coaxing a whine from him.

Somewhere off to the side, he heard Mako utter a scandalised groan. - Oh my Spirits. Seriously, guys? -

[End Mako's suffering]
----+

Bolin was practically vibrating with excitement the entire morning of the day they were supposed to visit their family. He could barely sit still at the breakfast table and Mako had to remind him to swallow several times.

They had the day off and a couple hours to spare, so Bolin ambled through the day, until the monotony was broken by the doorbell.

Bolin greeted Wei with a big kiss. He noticed that Wei was wearing a nicer robe than usual, one of the ones that his family had sent him back from Zaofu, silk with a silvery finish. Bolin decided to not comment, he could tell by how Wei bounced his leg and fidgeted with his necklace that the metalbender was a bit nervous.

They took the tram up to Roku Plaza, Bolin pointing out different places out to an inquisitive Wei and happily answering his questions as they went. Bolin secretly took note of the ones that interested Wei most, the part of the park that hosted different performances in particular.

Hopping off the tram, the three benders, along with Pabu, who was happily riding Bolin's shoulder, walked a couple streets, before finding themselves at the door to the mansion the brothers' family resided in.

The door flew open almost the second Mako knocked on it, the youngest members of the family immediately greeting their relatives with gleeful shireks and toothy smiles. Wei was not spared from this ritual, getting crowded by the bolder children, showering him with questions, their little hands latching onto his robe.

Once the younglings' excitement died down, the guests were ushered in and welcomed by the adults. Many hugs and handshakes were shared. Bolin introduced Wei, whom most of the family remembered, at least vaguely.

Bolin's heart grew as he watched his family mingle with Wei. The metalbender was alternating between talking to Tu and being borderline harassed by Little Tee, the four year old having decided that he wanted to investigate Wei's jewellery. Wei was, to his credit, was very patiently indulging the child's curiosity.

Settling at the meal table, the family talked over each other, swapping questions and stories over braised turtle duck. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed, the warmth of being surrounded by the people he loved wrapping Bolin in a nice fuzzy blanket of happiness.

It was as they munched on a dessert of sugar cookies that Bolin decided to reveal his new relationship, taking Wei's hand and holding it under the table as he spoke.

The family seemed to vary in reactions, but were mostly supportive.
Mostly.

Now, grandma Yin liked Wei in the way old ladies like good-looking, polite young men. She liked him significantly less once she had been informed that he'd turned her grandson to the path of sodomy.

- Are you sure about this, dear?- she asked, not outwardly angry, actually more distressed if anything. - You know how much trouble these things can be.- Bolin shrunk a little in his seat, slightly hurt by her words.

- Mom. - Chow interposed, folding his hands on the table, oddly agitated.

- I'm just concerned, is what. - Yin ignored her son, shifting and looking at Bolin worriedly. - I don't want you to get hurt. You know that people talk. -

- Mom.- Chow repeated, more forceful this time.
- People talk?- Bolin questioned, cocking his head in confusion. - A... about what?-

- Tea, anyone? Would anyone like some tea?- Li-Ling asked, clearly trying to break the tension, though she was promptly ignored.

Yin cleared her throat again, wide, critical eyes glued to her grandson - People might say that it's not, well... normal. -

Bolin flinched, feeling as if he were slapped in the face.

Chow slammed his hand on the table. - Mom, that's enough!- he snapped, glaring at his mother.
Yin stood up, taking a sharp breath. - I'll go make some tea.- she announced and no one pointed out the full pot of tea upon the table as she walked into the kitchen.

The silence that followed was deafening.
Pit deep in his stomach, a forlorn Bolin held Wei's hand super tight, an oddly ashamed flush biting at his face. He heard and felt Mako shift beside him, moving as if to hide the two earthbenders from view. Bolin appreciated it.

He swallowed, turning to the rest of his family, wondering if he should apologise or something. - I....-
Chow cut him off. - You don't have to say anything. - he said quickly, reaching over to put a hand on Bolin's shoulder. - No one here should think any less of you because of who you love. No one.-

Bolin almost sniffled, eyes slightly wet. He had been worried that he'd lost his family's love especially after finding them only recently. - Is grandma...? - he didn't even know what he wanted to say. He opened and closed his mouth a couple times like a fish out of water.

Chow sighed, leaning back in his chair. - Your grandmother and, for that matter, your grandfather, when he was around, have... old-fashioned beliefs. - he acquiesced, pinching the bridge of his nose and adding : - One of the reasons your father never came back to visit. -

- Don't let it get to you, dude.- Tu grinned, shoving a sugar cookie into his mouth and continuing with his mouth full. - We're happy for ya both. - he announced, before turning to his sister - Pay up, I told you they'd get together. -

Meng-Meng snorted, rolling her eyes. - Yeah, like three years ago. Doesn't count anymore, dipstick.-

Bolin blinked, confused. - Wait, what?-

Tu snorted and laughed - Come on, Wei was obviously so into you. We could tell even like three years ago! - he announced and Bolin felt Wei's hand twitch in his. Tu continued brazenly. - So, I bet on you two getting together. -

Bolin gasped, scandalised. - You two were making bets about my love life like a week after we met?!-

Meng-Meng shrugged dismissively. - Hey, six silver pieces is six silver pieces. -

Bolin was flabbergasted. - six silver pieces? SIX SILVER PIECES? I think I'm worth a little more than six silver pieces.- he groused, hand over his chest.

- Think you're overselling yourself here, Bo.- Mako sniggered, leaning back in his chair and trying to keep his sugar cookie out of the reach of Pabu's grasping little paws.

Bolin harrumphed, holding back a laugh. Beside him Wei wasn't even trying to hide his amusement, chuckling openly.

The atmosphere seemed to relax after that, the conversation drifting into safer waters. Bolin was more than happy to let it do so, idly tracing the tip of his pointer finger over Wei's knuckles as he chimed back into the conversation every now and then.

The big grandfather clock's ticking seemed to grow more insistent as the outside world became painted with sunset. The children of the family began to become restless, wiggling in their seats and making funny faces at one another. Pabu, well stuffed with the tasty morsels that the family had been sneaking him under the table, was napping slung over Bolin's lap. It was obvious that the adults were growing tired as well, the breaks between dialogue growing longer and longer.

The day was close to an end when the family saw their guests off, the warmth of the setting sun playing at Bolin's back as he hugged each aunt, uncle and cousin goodbye.

The rest of the household had wandered back inside, leaving only Chow, who clasped Bolin's shoulder affectionately. - Don't let what your grandmother says affect you. - the man muttered with a small smile. - We all love you, so much. And we are so glad that we found you and your brother. We'll never turn you away. Especially not for this.-

Bolin sniffled a little, tightly holding onto his uncle. He absentmindedly wondered if this would be what hugging his father would be like. -Thank you.- he whispered, clinging to the older man.

- Of course. Always. - Chow smiled, ruffling Bolin's hair. He turned to Wei and gently hugged the younger man as well - Welcome to the family, Wei.-

Wei hummed out a little appreciative noise, hugging back. - Thank you, mr Chow. - he answered, stepping back with a smile. - I appreciate it. I'm sorry if I caused...- he made a vague gesture with his hands.

Chow chuckled and patted Wei's shoulder. -Don't worry about it. - he comforted, before looking back at Bolin. - I'll talk to her. We'll work it out, ok?-

Bolin gave a huge sigh of relief. - Ok. Thank you, thank you.- he breathed, glad to leave the unpleasant debate to his uncle.

Waving goodbye to Chow, Bolin and Wei followed Mako back down the street, Pabu lazily draped over Bolin's shoulders.

The air was hot, almost stiflingly so, a thick, scorching layer of still air clinging to his skin and the inside of his lungs. Bolin swallowed, though it didn't do much to clear his throat.
He reached out to take Wei's hand but dropped his hand it back to his side when they walked onto a busier street. He dried his sweaty palms into his trousers.

Despite the blistering heat sticking to him, Bolin felt oddly cold inside his clammy skin.

----+

Bolin was well used to the invasive flash of the swarm of reporter-wielded cameras. He adjusted his suit jacket and smiled broadly at the dark lenses.

The announcement of the rerun of Nuktuk: Hero of the South in the Probending arena had been last-minute. A hurriedly cobbled together fundraiser trying to patch up the refugee camp after it was attacked by the Agni Kais.

Bolin had been more than happy to lend his face to the event when Varrick and Zhu Li approached him with the idea. As were several others, though Mako had declined, still rather displeased with how Varrick handled the whole Water Tribe Civil War thing. No one likes being framed for domestic terrorism. But Bolin had at least managed to badger his brother into picking him up once the mover ended.
Korra and Asami were, of course, still on their little excursion in the Spirit World.

Therefore, Bolin was alone upon the red carpet, save for Ginger glued to his side, striking a pose for the reporters, and Pabu settled upon his shoulder.
Up until a gleeful Varrick ushered several guests from Air Temple Island in front of the cameras.

A frazzled Tenzin was doing his darndest to look regal as he tried to wrangle all his children, with the addition of a fired up Kai, into behaving. A deeply amused Pema seemed to be perfectly content to allow her husband to struggle on his own.
His pine green robe sticking out like a sore thumb amongst the sea of red, orange and yellow, Wei was quietly whispering with Opal, owlishly blinking at the brightly flashing cameras. Bolin hummed in endeared amusement at how the metalbender eyed the reporters with confused apprehension.

Drawn back to reality, Bolin kept up with his own task of posing and 'looking smoken hot', as Varrick put it, as Zhu Li spoke to the reporters, explaining the plight of the refugees.

Time passed in a camera flash permeated haze and Bolin was starting to feel tired, despite it only being the beginning of the event.

He glanced towards the others, curious to see if the intrusive inquisitiveness of the reporters had been taking a toll on them as well.

Tenzin's kids seemed to have lost their enthusiasm, now visibly sick and tired of the camera flashes. Shuffling their feet upon the carpet and muttering between each other.
The airbending master himself was giving an interview, tired eyes locked onto a rather pushy reporter.
An excitedly gesticulating Opal was talking to Pema, who seemed to be the only one genuinely having a good time. Bolin vaguely remembered the woman complaining about not getting off Air Temple Island enough.

Wei, abandoned by his sister, was now stiffly lingering at the edge of the group, adjusting his jewellery way more than necessary. His mouth turned down into a sour little frown, shoulders slumping.

Bolin pursed his lips, worried. He'd been rather sure Wei would be excited to visit the Probending Arena for the first time. They'd talked about it and even made plans to go, although both their workloads had gotten in the way of any potential dates.
But although these weren't the perfect circumstances, Bolin would've thought that Wei still would be thrilled to be here.

And yet... in that moment, Wei had nothing of that adorable wide-eyed curiosity or wonderment Bolin expected.

- Hey, anything going on up there?- Ginger tapped his temple, arching an inquisitive brow. - You've just been standing still for a while.- she pointed out, before leaning on his shoulder and shooting the cameras a clearly practiced yet enticing pout.

- Ack, sorry.- Bolin muttered, trying unsuccessfully to match her poised energy. - I just... got distracted. Wei looks, um, off?- He noted, making Ginger frown.

- Hm. Well, why not go to him then ? - she murmured, stepping backwards a little.

- You wouldn't mind?- Bolin asked, awkwardly tugging at his jacket. He did want to go check on Wei, but something about the flashing cameras and eyes upon them made him hesitate.

- Oh, just get out of here.- Ginger waved him away. - Go on, shoo.-

Bolin smiled and gave her a grateful nod Trying to look confident, he strutted up to Wei. - um, Hey!- he hummed, folding his hands behand his back.

- Hey. - Wei responded, glancing at him with a tiny, terse smile.

They were both silent for a second. Bolin shuffled his feet against the red velvet of the carpet.

Finally Wei took pity on him. - Are these things always this... hectic?- He asked, crossing his arms and bouncing his leg.

- oh, uh, yeah. Yeah, they kinda are... Varrick calls this a 'media circus'. Don't worry, you get used to it.- Bolin answered, glancing at the cameras and the reporters, who seemed rather displeased that he was no longer paying attention to them but curious about Wei.

He wanted to take Wei's hand, or hug him. Maybe even kiss him. Show him love, somehow.
However, something had been clawing at his stomach, a nagging worry, almost a fear. People were looking at them, inquisitive and intrusive. And talking.
It was like ever since that visit at his family's home, he'd been having difficulty being openly affectionate towards his boyfriend in public.

Bolin tried his very best to push away the odd feelings. - Are you having fun?- he queried tentatively.
Wei inhaled through his teeth. - Well, this certainly is an... experience. - he said carefully, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. - How's Ginger?-

The question surprised Bolin, he hadn't been aware that Wei was curious about Ginger. -uh, she's good.- he answered listlessly. And he couldn't help but question: - Why do you ask?-

- No reason. - Wei retorted hurriedly, turning his head, averting his gaze. - Just making conversation. -

But Bolin could already see the telltale pinkness crawling up the back of Wei's neck and dusting the tips of his ears.

Bolin blinked, surprised. - Wait. Are you... Are you jealous? - he asked, halfway amused, halfway incredulous.

- Jealous? - Wei chirped, visibly beyond flustered at this point. - I'm not jealous. Why would I be jealous? It's not like you were posing for so many photos with your extremely hot and famous mover star ex girlfriend. -

Bolin huffed a surprised laugh, unable to formulate an answer.

Wei deflated and wrung his hands, tugging at his bracelets. - Look, I, uh...- he started, not looking at Bolin. - I don't mean it like...-

- Alrighty folks!- Varrick's voice boomed over the area, and Bolin watched Wei jump at the loud noise. - Time to start the show!-

Exhausted by the prying attention of the reporters, everyone seemed relieved to shuffle into the arena and into the VIP lounge.

Bolin settled in a plush seat, beckoning Wei into the one next to him. The metalbender, back straight as an arrow, settled on the edge of it, neatly folding his hands in his lap.

Soon the very familiar cheerful theme song was ringing throughout the arena and then Bolin was watching the eerily unnerving image of his younger self prancing about on the big screen, in those ridiculously tiny shorts and revealing furs. Somehow possesing a life of its own.

Although only four years ago, it seemed like eons had passed since then. Back when the attention of hunders of strangers had seemed like the biggest accomplishment in the world, whilst being alone and unnoticed felt like the most horrific torture.

The thoughts had him shifting uncomfortably in his much too cushiony seat, barely following the story he knew so well anyway.

Unable to take it anymore, he gently nudged Wei's elbow. - Do you wanna go somewhere?-

Wei arched an eyebrow with a grin. - aw, but I'm appreciating your talent. - he drawled, glancing pointedly at a rather unsubtle closeup on Nuktuk's naked abs.

Bolin flushed and chuckled, but pursued his point. - We can watch the mover later, just the two of us.- he proposed, watching Wei's sharp smile turn softer. Sensing that the metalbender's resolve was crumbling, he went in for the final shot. - Don't you want to see the rest of the arena?-

He saw Wei's mossy eyes light up at the prospect of exploration.

Soon, Bolin was dashing through the corridors he knew like the back of his hand, he'd once lived here after all. But this time he was older, taller and he had Wei's hand in his, Pabu chasing after them, chirping excitedly.

Turning a corner, Bolin paused, giggling breathlessly alongside Wei, about what he wasn't sure. He turned around, to face Wei, the two of them so close, smiling wildly.

For a second they were silent, save for panted out, heavy breaths. Wei was flushed beautifully, his hand still linked with Bolin's.

Bolin found himself nearly speechless, taken by how much he loved the man in front of him. - Is there anything in particular you want to see here? - he managed to stutter out.

Wei knit his brows toghether thoughtfully. -You used to live somewhere here, right? - he asked, cocking his head, curiously looking up at Bolin. - I want to see that.-

Bolin pursed his lips. - It's not very glamorous.- he mumbled, self conscious as he often was, despite his efforts to cover up his own insecurities. Because Wei had grown up in Zaofu, wonderful and beautiful Zaofu, the city of artists, of visionaries. And all Bolin could show him was the cold, dusty attic he and Mako had been allowed to live in.

- I don't mind. - Wei said softly, squeezing Bolin's hand gently, as if to encourage him. - I want to see a place that was important to you.-

Bolin hummed indecisively. He was still rather embarrassed of his former place of residence. He was also, however, touched by Wei's interest.
After all, Wei hadn't ever judged him for his past. On the contrary, Wei listened to his tales with a grim fascination, smiling reassuringly, if not a bit sadly.

- Okay. - he finally buckled, leading Wei down a smaller, less elegant corridor. - This way, up the ladder. - he gestured, ascending the familiar, wooden structure.
He heard Wei follow.

Climbing into the attic, he turned around, extending his hand for Wei to take. The metalbender did just that, smiling.
Bolin carefully guided Wei onto the rough, wooden floorboards.

They stood in the dark attic, a cool breeze blowing through the large, empty room.

It was almost as if nothing had changed. The sparse furniture was unchanged, unmoved. Just covered in way more dust than ever before. The little kitchen area that Mako and Bolin had used to prepare their modest meals was desolate. The only indication that it had ever been used the pile of ash towering above the fireplace.

- Well, this is it. - Bolin muttered sheepishly, fingers flexing at his sides. - I know it's not much. But, it was the best Mako and I'd had in years back when we moved here.- he chuckled wryly. Stepping towards the deflated shapes of the thin mattresses him and his brother used to sleep on.

- I can imagine...- Wei murmured, his eyes roaming over the mismatched furniture. He followed Bolin into the dark depths of the room. - Was it just you and Mako living up here?-

- Yep. Oh, and Pabu!- Bolin chuckled, petting the little ferret, as it chirped in excitement.
Wei grinned brightly. - of course. And Pabu.- he concured, much to the fuzzy creature's satisfaction.

They both chuckled, and Bolin leant on a cabinet, startling a cockroach out of an open drawer. The lavabender frowned in distaste, he'd almost forgotten how unsettling the little buggers were.
The insect skittered across the floor, right past Wei's feet, who shuddered, taking a couple frantic steps away. - ew, ew, what was that?- he all but squeaked, as Pabu leapt down onto the floor to gleefully chase the roach around.

Bolin burst out laughing, almost bending in half. Wei Beifong, grandson of the greatest earthbender in the world, an accomplished bender himself, who faced an army and a giant mecha suit was scared of cockroaches, apparently.

- Don't laugh!- Wei hissed, hurriedly walking over to him, cautiously examining the floorboards, as if more creepy crawlies were to appear from amongst them. - What the fuck was that?-

Bolin managed to choke down his laughter enough to answer. - That was just a cockroach. -

Wei stilled immediately, smoothing down his robe, visibly embarrassed. - Oh. Um..- he stammered and Bolin was pretty sure his face was beet red, though he wasn't able to tell properly in the darkness of the room.

- Were you scared, bun?- Bolin couldn't help but tease as Wei reached him, still warily inspecting the floor.

- no, not at all!- Wei crossed his arms, shooting Bolin a glare.

Bolin couldn't help himself. - Oh! It's right there!- he announced, pointing at the very devoid of cockroaches floor behind Wei.

- Ah, fuck! Where?- Wei almost shrieked, jumping forward, pressing up against Bolin, inspecting the floorboards rather fearfully. Bolin started laughing again, and Wei turned to stare daggers at him, swatting at his shoulder. - You dick!-

Bolin just kept laughing. - Don't worry- he promised, hugging Wei to his chest and nuzzling against his neck, breathing in the soothing scent of the sandalwood they used on Air Temple Island. -I'll protect you from the roaches. -
- Stop.- Wei grumbled, but he himself gave a little, slightly mortified chuckle. He didn't shy away from Bolin's embrace.

- Ok, ok. I'll stop.- Bolin chuckled, hooking his arm around Wei's waist. The somber whimsy he'd been feeling due to visiting his old haunt had practically evaporated, replaced by briliant exhilaration of showing Wei a piece of his past. - Hey, do you wanna see my favourite thing about this place?-

Wei glanced around the rather empty room. -And what would that be? - he asked incredulously, looking back at Bolin, raising his eyebrows.

Bolin led Wei towards the huge window. A thick layer of dust clung to the glass, obscuring the familiar, magnificent view. Bolin quickly did away with it, sacrificing the cleanliness of his sleeve in the process. It was worth it when the scenery was revealed, when he heard Wei gasp in awe.

Although the splendor of the sprawling city was greatly diminished by the aftermath of the battle and the waste laid by Kuvira's giant mecha suit, it was still a sight to behold at night.
Thousands of little lights winking at them, windows and street lamps emitting a soft, warm glow.
The streets occasionally speckled by the figure of someone dashing across the crossings. A couple returning home after a lovely date, a group of friends going out for a night on the town.
The colourful roofs and masonwork of the many different houses, a different little detail catching one's eye every second. A curious pattern in the maroon tiling of a roof. A pretty little carving in the base of another building.

All this reflected in the murky, shifting waves of Yue Bay.

- It's incredible. - Wei murmured, his nose practically pressed up against the window pane. His sparkling, mossy eyes mirrored by its dark glass surface.
- Yeah, it is.- Bolin agreed, though he wasn't talking about the view at all.

Wei turned around to look at him, leaning in to kiss him softly. Warm, velvety lips upon Bolin's. And Bolin was happy to accept it all, hands on Wei's waist, tugging him closer.
Wei lifted one hand to cup Bolin's cheek, running his thumb along the sensitive skin. Bolin sighed out a contented breath, running his hand up and down Wei's back. Wei keened quietly as Bolin pushed him back against the window.

Bolin took a little step backwards, letting Wei settle upon the windowsil. Soon Bolin joined him upon it, leaning against the windowpane, taking Wei's hand.

- I always loved the view from here. - Bolin said, letting his gaze wander along the mostly desolate streets. - I could sit here for hours and watch people go about their days.-

Wei just nodded, eyes glued to the window, the only indication that he heard Bolin's words being a gentle squeeze to his hand.

They simply sat together for a while, silent and just appreciating one another's presence. Behind them Pabu seemed to be having the time of his life, wildly chasing the cockroach around the attic.
Bolin's eyes followed the path of a lonesome cranefish soaring over the shimmering expanse of Yue Bay. Soon, however, the bird settled in a nest, joined by another cranefish. The two birds seemed to nuzzle against one another, shielding each other from the cool wind that swept over the coast.

He heard Wei take a deep breath, before speaking. : - Bolin, listen... - he paused as if he were gathering his thoughts. - I'm sorry about the whole... jealousy thing. I shouldn't have been mad about that. I trust you, of course I do. It's just that... I don't know.- he shook his head, looking away from the window, seemingly abandoning his thought process.

Bolin cocked his head inquisitively, squeezing Wei's hand encouragingly. - Tell me.- he beseeched, rubbing gentle circles into the back of Wei's hand with the pad of his thumb.

Wei sighed. - It's just that... that I've been feeling as if you've been... upset with me.- he finally said, barely above a whisper. - I... have I done something?-

Bolin was speechless for a second. Was that how his recent hesitance towards showing Wei affection in public had come off? - No, no! Spirits, no! You did nothing wrong!- he assured, now grabbing both Wei's hands. - It's me, actually. - he muttered, taking a gulp of the dust filled air, formulating his thoughts.

Wei deserved the truth at the very least.

The metalbender cocked his head in that birdlike manner he sometimes had, eyes narrowing. Lips pursed as if he were holding himself back from asking too many questions.

Bolin smiled, though he knew it came out all wobbly and weak. He hoped it still held some comfort. - I guess... I can't stop thinking about what my grandmother said when we last saw her. -he confessed and his words filled the dark room with an oppressive air of discomfort. - That people will talk... and judge us. And it's... it's...- he couldn't say anything more.

- It's scary.- Wei finished for him, biting his lip. - And unfair.-

Bolin nodded, breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that Wei understood. - Yeah. - he breathed, laughing quietly, sadly. - I... I didn't mean to hurt you. I just... don't know what to do. -

He watched Wei bite his lip and furrow his brows, as if he were wrestling with something. He slipped his hands out of Bolin's hold.- Would you want to take a... a step back? A break?- he offered, fidgeting where he sat, tugging at the hem of his robe.

Bolin's eyeballs nearly popped out of his skull. His voice died in his throat for a second. - Is this what you think I want?- he asked in a meek, quivering voice.

Wei huffed, looking off into the distance. - I don't know what you want. - he said brusquely, balling his hands into fists. - And, frankly, I don't think you know what you want, either.-

And Bolin couldn't formulate a response for several seconds.

Wei was sitting all tense and strained, drumming his fingers on his knee. - Bolin, I've been in love with you for years. And now that we're together, I think I may be the happiest I've been in ages. But I need you to be completely honest with me.-

Blinking in surprise, Bolin leant backwards, his brain whirring intensely. What did he want? What did he want?

He looked at Wei, who was staring down at the floor, stiff as a board, hands fisted into his robe. So tense and worried, chewing his lip and fidgeting where he sat. As if he was scared that Bolin would choose to leave him.
And Bolin couldn't not assuage those fears. If there was one thing he was sure of, it was that he loved Wei.

He reached over, slipping two fingers under Wei's chin, tilting it upwards, so they could look into each other's eyes. - I want you. I want us.- he whispered, his other hand cupping Wei's cheek. - And, sure, I'm a bit scared right now, but... I'd like to think that what we have is worth it. -

Wei blinked up at him. - I want you, too.- he said softly, mossy eyes soft and adoring, melting Bolin's insides. - But I want you to be happy. I don't want to force you to do anything. -

Bolin huffed a weak laugh. - You're not, Wei. - he noticed Wei's eyebrows furrowed in slight disbelief. - I'm serious. You make me so happy, I feel like I've been more myself than ever when I'm with you . I love you. I want to stay with you. -

He watched the tiny smile bloom upon Wei's lips. For a second they were both frozen, caught in one another's eyes.

The next, they were kissing. Bolin's hands on the small of Wei's back, Wei's fingers tangling into Bolin's hair. Soon, Wei was sprawled over Bolin's lap, whining quietly as Bolin's tongue ventured past his lips. Bolin drew him close to his chest, to his heart. So soft and strong at the same time. Clever fingers tugging him closer by his hair.

When their lips broke apart, they still stayed toghether, Wei resting with his back to Bolin's chest, with the lavabender's arms around his waist.
Simply relaxing, taking in the beautiful scenery, delighting in each other's closeness.

Wei's warm body against him, snuffing out the cold of the attic. A fog had rolled in outside, enveloping the city and bay in soft, milky gloom.
When Bolin was a child, the brume that came in from the ocean had scared him. Obscuring the world around him, full of the unknown, it could hold all manner of monsters, at least to the young mind.
For some reason, however, today it made Bolin relax a little, blanketing him with a warm, downy haze. Leaving him fighting to keep his eyes open as he buried his face in the junction between Wei's neck and shoulder.

Stroking one hand up and down Wei's side, Bolin held the man close. - I wish I could be as brave about this as you. Like you don't care about what people think about you.-

Wei chuckled wryly. - Oh, if only that were true. - he huffed, leaning more on Bolin's chest. - But I only care what people I care about think about me. My family and my friends, that's whose opinion matters. Everyone else can get fucked. - he muttered, making Bolin snort a laugh. - At least that's what Aiwei told me when I was a kid. In much politer terms. -

- Aiwei? - Bolin asked, curiously but cautiously. He'd learnt to do his best to tread carefully when the Beifongs spoke of their childhoods alongside people who later stabbed the family in the back later.

- Oh, Aiwei was like us. Into men. - Wei explained, dispassionately. - When I was twelve, I thought a boy from my middle school was really cute. So I wrote him a stupid, romantic note and then asked him out for a little date. His dad was an ambasador or something from Ba Sing Se. - Wei trailed off for, expression pinched. Bolin could see it in the windowpane's reflection.

- Old-fashioned beliefs?- he asked, gently taking Wei's hand. Grandma had been from Ba Sing Se and Bolin knew that the great city was rather traditional and outdated in its views.

Wei hummed an affirmation and gave a little nod. -When he found out, he came to the mansion. Yelled at me, I didn't exactly understand what he was saying or what he was calling me. But I still started bawling, because I knew he hated me. - he said, curling in on himself.

Bolin sighed, squeezing Wei's hand lightly. It was his greatest fear, to be so outwardly hated for something he couldn't change. Something he didn't exactly want to change. - I'm sorry you had to go through that. - he murmured, nosing Wei's nape, hoping to provide comfort.

- Don't be. - Wei countered, leaning back to kiss Bolin's cheek. - Kuvira heard the guy screaming at me and kicked him out. After that my parents and Aiwei talked to me about how, some people are awful for stupid reasons. But they told me that I shouldn't let them stop me from being myself. And that the people worth caring for wouldn't want me to, either. - he chuckled, pressing his palm to Bolin's. - It was a weird and upsetting day.-

- No kidding.- Bolin breathed, linking their fingers. He wondered if his parents would've been as understanding as Su and Baatar Sr were to Wei. He was pretty sure they would've. After all, apparently his father and grandparents butted heads over the subject of 'old-fashioned beliefs'.

He was also pretty sure his parents would've adored Wei. His parents, who ventured from their homes to the brilliant new horizon that Republic City had been at the time. Yes, they would've gotten along with the curious and free-spirited Wei. Wei, whose eyes had always sparkled when Bolin used to tell him tales of Republic City.

Suddenly choked up, he peppered kisses everywhere on Wei he could reach. - You're wonderful. - he whispered against Wei's warm skin, against where he could feel his pulse beneath his lips.

Wei huffed a laugh. - You're pretty cool, too.- he sniggered, cocking his head, exposing more of his neck and face to be kissed. He lifted one hand to the side of Bolin's face, fingertips caressing his cheek, soft and soothing.

And they fell silent, quietly watching the whisps of fog crawl across the streets. A pearly and silky sea, broken up by little isles of the street lamps' golden glow.

As the night grew older and older, the shadows of the occasional pedestrians wading through the mist became scarcer and scarcer, now replaced by the city's less conventional denizens.
By the skittering shapes of lizard crows and spider rats, scavenging for trash in the abandoned strets, even the rare flashes of Spirits that had ventured further away from their natural territories near the brilliantly bright beacon of the Portal.

The sweetly ever-present silence was only interrupted by Bolin's own soft breaths, and Wei's, right next to him, pressed close to him. His hand wandered up from Wei's waist to his chest, feeling it expand and compress with every inhale and exhale.

Yes, they were both breathing.

The idea seemed like it should be a given, should a certainty, but Bolin knew better than anyone that was not true. They'd both had their share of near death experiences and had the scars, whether upon body or mind, to prove it.

But they were both breathing and alive. Amongst so many harsh reminders of the fragility of mortal life, Bolin and those he cared for had somehow braved it all. Bandits, dictators, triads, so many others, take your pick.

By now, he had no illusions that they'd face many more. The triad turf wars are revving up in intensity and he hears the Earth Empire is still kicking.
No, neither safety, nor peace was guaranteed.

But he wasn't alone in this, now was he?
He had his brother, Korra and Asami. Tenzin, his family and Kai. Varrick and Zhu Li. The Beifongs. Wei.
The people he cared for and vice versa. The people he'd fought countless foes alongside of. The people he'd come to see as a sort of odd and mismatched patchwork of a family.
And the people who didn't see him as any less for whom he loved.

The scurrying of soft little paws announced the return of Pabu. The ferret was covered in a rather thick coating of dust, but seemed extremely happy with itself. In its mouth, bracketed by sharp little teeth was the very much alive and twitching cockroach.

Pabu chirped proudly up at his humans and then deposited his still convulsing prize. Straight into Wei's lap.

Wei, commendably, did not scream. Rather, he uttered a strangled and shrill noise, jerking backwards with so much force that both he and Bolin fell off the windowsil.

The two trained and experienced earthbenders landed on the wooden floor in an impressively large cloud of dust and a heap of limbs.

Caught between sneezing from the dust in his nose and laughing from the absurdity of the situation, Bolin could only snort out coughlike chortles. All while Wei frantically checked himself over for any lingering cockroaches, only bolstering Bolin's amusement.

- fuck, fuck! Is it on me? Is it?- Wei babbled out panicked questions.
Bolin did his best to smother his laughter, in order to place a soothing hand on Wei's shoulder. - Nope, you're fine.- he comforted, motioning up at the windowsil, where Pabu sat, having finally ended the cockroach's suffering. The ferret squeaked disapprovingly down at the silly humans as he devoured the tasty morsel all on his own.

Wei huffed a sigh, sitting up straighter and readjusting his necklace. Trying to make himself presentable, though it didn't do much. Dishevelled and caked in dust as they were. Wei pulled a face at his dirty robe and the gave a high pitched sneezed as he accidentally inhaled a bit of dust.

Bolin started laughing again, fingers combing through his now messy hair. In response, Wei scowled at him. - It's not funny!- he spat, dusting his trousers off.

But Bolin only laughed louder, hand on his stomach. - You're right, it's hilarious. - he snorted, leaning back against the wall.

- How's being dirty hilarious?- Wei grumbled, but visibly calmed down. He lifted a hand to his cheek, trying to wipe a stain off... somethjng from it, though only managed to smudge it further. - I'm a mess!-

- The most beautiful mess in the world. - Bolin cooed, helping Wei wipe the dirt away properly.

Wei rolled his eyes. - I don't think anyone else will think that, but thank you.- he leant forward, quickly and softly pecking at Bolin's lips.
He leant back, but they lingered right next to each other. Staring into one another's eyes.

Bolin smiled, glancing up and through the window. The moon glowing weakly in over the city, though the stars were blocked out by the many lights below. - The mover should be over soon. - he announced, shuffling where he sat. - we should, ah, go, before someone gets worried? Probably?-

Wei smiled. - Probably. - he agreed, standing up, pulling Bolin up with him. Pabu squeaked curiously, leaping onto Bolin's shoulder, as Wei climbed down the ladder.

As they walked out into the main corridors, Bolin heard Wei give a distressed whine. Turning around, Bolin noticed the metalbender inspecting his reflection in one of the large decorative mirrors. He did look, well, like a mess.
Hair dirty and slightly dishevelled. Clothes covered in dust. The corners of his lips turned downwards in displeasure.

Bolin was pretty sure he didn't look much better, but he was rather used to being dirty. He snorted, gently hooking his arm around Wei's. - come on, princess, you look fine.-
Wei stammered, but otherwise let himself be dragged back to the lounge, just in time to see the end credits.

- Look at you guys! - Kai laughed, noticing the couple once they slipped past the door. -What the hell happened to you?- he asked, ignoring a little 'Kai, language! ' from Tenzin.

- Oh, just chasing cockroaches around the attic. - Bolin hummed, earning himself a sharp elbow in the ribs from Wei while Kai chuckled.

In the end, Opal was nice enough to conjure a slight wind that swept most of the dust off them. Finally ready to leave, the group leisurely talked between each other as they meandered to the exit.

The outside of the arena was as filled with reporters as it had been before. Mako's car was waiting next to where Oogi was napping, the firebender himself leaning against it with a sour expression, glaring at the occasional nosy intruder. Doing that whole broody and angsty thing that had garnered him so many fans back in the probending days.

Bolin grinned and waved at his brother, who responded with a nod, letting Bolin say his goodbyes.

Bolin hugged Kai and Opal, before letting them clamber onto Oogi's back. He turned to Wei, who was awkwardly lingering at his side.
- Thanks for showing me your old place. - the metalbender said earnestly, running his hand down Bolin's forearm. - I really appreciate it.-

- Thanks for wanting to see it. - Bolin countered, catching Wei's hand in both his.

- Of course I wanted to see it. It's something important to you.- Wei retorted, looking down at their joint hands. - So... it's important to me too. - he mumbled the last part.

And Bolin honestly didn't know how to answer that.

- Well, I'd better get going. Don't wanna keep everyone waiting. - Wei motioned towards Oogi and took a step back. - Bye.-

He went to slip his hand out off Bolin's, but just as he did, Bolin made a split second decision, tightening his grip and pulling Wei back in. Pressing their lips together in a chaste, but passionate kiss.

Bolin stepped back after but moment, taking a deep breath. But the world hadn't exploded, so he gave a very stunned Wei another kiss. -Bye.- he chirped, before hightailing it to Mako's car, not daring look at any of the reporters or moviegoers.

Through the window he watched Wei stand stock still for a good couple seconds, before a huge, giddy smile bloomed upon his flushed face. He practically skipped up Oogi's tail. He was adorable, at least to Bolin's eyes.

Mako started the car and began driving back home. They were silent for most of the drive. In fact, they were almost at their apartment building when Mako cleared his throat.

-That's one way to announce your relationship to the world. - he quipped with a forced lightness to his voice. - I hope you thought that through. -

- I did. Well, a little. - he admitted, leaning his forhead on the windowpane. - Someone would've found out soon anyway. - it was true. Between being the friend of the Avatar, an ex probender and a mover star, privacy wasn't exactly guaranteed.

- Guess you're right.- Mako muttered, turning into a side street. - People will talk. I hope you're ready for that.-

Bolin sighed heavily, clasping his hands toghether, as if to preserve the ghost of Wei's touch upon his palms. - Let them talk.- he decided in the end.

Mako hummed thoughtfully, and Bolin could see a small smile on his brother's face in the rear view mirror.

Bolin glanced through the window. The fog had dissipated, he hadn't even noticed when. The only proof of it ever having existed being thin, milky tendrils of it that lingered in the corners of the streets.
However, even those soon retracted into nothingness.

They would be back one day, such is the nature of the world.
But just as that fact was an unwritten gospel, so was the one that proclaimed that they always leave eventually.

Nothing is really permanent in any universe, so we should do the best to enjoy what we care for, before we too become fog upon the seabound breeze.
