It's 7:30 at night and Alex is just about to leave the gym when her phone buzzes in the pocket of her sweatpants. She picks it up, glances at the screen, and gasps.
"Okay, who here loves me?" she asks.
"We all love you, Alex!" Sara calls over from the treadmill.
"Some of us more than others," Kara grunts from the middle of a chin-up.
"What do you want, Alex?" Kendra asks, cutting to the chase.
"Who here loves me enough to drive down to Boston to go see Boygenius with me in February?" Alex looks around the room. Kara's immediately lost interest. So have Charlie and Ava.
"When in February?" Sara asks. Alex looks back down at her phone.
"Um, the 8th?"
Sara winces. "Wish I could. Basketball game."
Ava scoffs. "How do you know that off the top of your head, but didn't know we had that AP Chinese test last week until Wang Laoshi literally passed it out?"
Sara sends a dirty look over to where Ava's doing squats, but her eyes linger on Ava's ass a little longer than necessary. Everyone notices except Ava, who shoots a glare back.
"Oh, still mad I did better than you?" Sara taunts.
"Fuck off, Lance," Ava snaps. "You got two points higher than me."
"You should ask Kelly," Kendra offers, steering the conversation away from Sara and Ava, who look a few seconds away from throwing down in the middle of the gym. Everyone laughs at that, and Sara even wolf-whistles.
"No, no, she can't do that," Kara cuts in. "That's basically a proposal for lesbians. First the Phoebe Bridgers concert, then the U-Haul!" Everyone dissolves into laughter, because if Alex's friends can agree on one thing, it's making fun of Alex. Alex sticks both middle fingers up in the air.
Of course, that's when Kelly walks into the gym.
"What's going on, guys?" she asks.
Everyone's quiet for about twenty seconds, and then starts laughing again. Sara almost falls off the treadmill, which makes Ava laugh even harder.
"Don't worry about it, Kelly," Kara says in between giggles. Kelly stops next to Alex and peers over her shoulder at her phone. She gasps, too.
"Boygenius is playing in Boston? Oh my God, I love Boygenius!" Kelly gasps again. "Oh my God, we should totally go! You're a fan too, right?"
Alex nods, unable to form words.
"Okay, that's perfect!" Kelly rushes on. "I can buy the tickets tonight! As long as you can drive us down?"
Alex nods again.
"Okay, well... great!" Kelly beams one more time. "Gotta go get changed- see you soon!" She kisses Alex on the cheek and rushes back out, presumably to the locker room.
Alex is left standing there, in the doorway to the gym, grin spreading slowly across her face.
