Work Text:
The playground was loud and annoying, full of humans tripping or playing in the chips of wood. Klaus swung on the swing kicking as far as his little legs could go.
He really hated the park, everyone was too loud and every kid had stupid things to show him when he showed up. He closed his eyes and hopped off the swing from the highest height it swung.
He landed on his feet and he began to find somewhere quiet to rest his head.
He wouldn’t dare sit next to the young nanny because she just talked a lot.
He found himself near a tree and he sat down; but the tree wasn’t quiet either.
There was ugly sobbing on the other side of the tree trunk. He frowned and stood up stomping over ready to tell the kid to shut the hell up and go away but he just froze.
The kid was just sobbing “I miss my mommy..I wanna go home..” over and over again.
Klaus stood there towering over the kid who’s younger than him..crying for his mommy?
He slowly looked up and he flinched covering his head. “I’m sorry..” the kid whispered shivering.
Klaus flinched as well then he waved his hands. “No- I- we-“ he stammered his words before dropping next to the crying kid.
“Don’t worry.” he looked over his shoulder then forward to see if anyone was coming.
“Do you wanna see something cool?” he quickly asked so he didn’t seem so imitating and instead like any other kid that was here.
The kid fluttered his eyelashes and he nodded slowly rubbing his tears and snot off his face.
Klaus opened his palm and it began to glow. It sparkled with little four pointed stars.
The other kid’s eyes widened as he sniffled collecting himself after he cried. “Tas’ cool…” he whispered reaching to touch the stars, as he touched them they disappeared.
“thank you. It’s a magic trick.” he smiled and he blinked.
“Why were you crying.”
The kid looked down at his hand when it disappeared and he looked up. “..nothin…magic boy. what’s your name?” he asked in a sweet voice. He had a small accent hard to tell.
He seemed to lean in a little Canadian and Nigerian. But, It was fading away.
“..Klaus…what’s yours crying boy?” He teased him and the kids' cheeks puffed up.
“Issac.” Klaus then got up on his feet and held his hand out.
“Then, Issac! stop crying and let’s go play!”
Issac looked at the boy with the most innocent eyes; red and swollen from crying.
“…okay..” he whispered.
and so they did. They played. Until, it was time for Klaus to go.
“Can you answer this question too?” Klaus laid on the field of grass chewing on the eraser of his pencil.
“..lemme see..” he crawled over to the paper laid out on the thick textbook.
“you’re older than me and you’re struggling with 9th grade math.” he crossed his arms and rested on his knees.
“am not. I just need someone to tell me if my math is right!”
“It’s wrong!”
“then help me!”
Issac crawled back over and held the textbook before sitting it on his lap. He grabbed the pencil and waved his hand to signal Klaus to come over so he could show him how to do the work.
As soon as he began to write, blood dripped down on the paper.
blood? Why was there blood..?
Issac’s eyes felt heavy, blood spilling from his nostrils.
He collapsed forward and Klaus swore this was the first time he felt panic.
“Issac?” His heart, or so called heart thumped through his chest like crazy. He trembles and drags his hand trying to pick him up.
With all his might dragging him, Issac’s legs dragged through the grass and Klaus began pleading and crying for help.
Klaus didn’t turn in his homework that night, matter of fact, he didn’t even bother to go to school the next day.
Why bother, he only went to school for one reason, everyone else seemed crazy. He turns to the doctor that entered and talks to Klaus.
He felt like his world was spinning. They were pulling him in circles,
“Your friend doesn’t seem to have any guardians..do you know anyone we can tell?”
He knew Issac’s parents weren’t no longer on earth. He knew Issac was an orphan.
“I’m his guardian just tell me.” He raised his voice. He felt like he was all he had.
“oh er- but you’re not-..”
Klaus was probably going to kill a few humans if they didn’t just tell him.
“Your friend has-.”
“Issac.” he lifted the library book off his friend's head.
“what~.” he groaned, annoyed. “Why are you in my class?”
“The bell doesn’t ring until…1:50..and you’re in here alone..! You got to highschool and this is all you do?”
Klaus laughed and Issac waved his hand. “Shut up! go hang out with your shitty basketball team friends.”
But, god..it wasn’t that easy. Klaus was Worried his stomach spun thinking of leaving Issac alone at any given time.
“nahh..” He pulled up a chair.
“Wanna see a magic trick?”
Issac slowly turned his head and he flushed. “Don’t show me that.”
“Why not? I thought you liked it?” He smiled.
“We’re not 7 anymore Klaus.”
But he does it anyway. His hand radiating purple light and the stars dancing from right hand to left.
Issac eyes watch the stars dancing. He leaned into the palm of his own hand and smiled.
“You’re an idiot.”
“But you’re still my friend?”
“I’m friends with an idiot.” he smiled and laughed.
Issac didn’t show up to school today, or the day after that. It kind of burned.
“Damn! you came to practice on time. you weren’t hanging around the orphan today.”
Orphan? Were they talking about Issac?
“Orphan?”
“Yea isn’t he your boyfriend?”boyfriend?
Klaus swore he wasn’t thinking, matter of fact he wasn’t in control. His fist touched the other kid's cheek and he kept throwing punches.
The other kids ran to pull him off. He didn’t even get his hands fully on him.
He didn’t know why that made him mad. Orphan? Boyfriend? Issac isn’t here to hear this.
So why were they saying this shit?
…
His mom didn’t like that, not one bit. He stood up to explain himself when she arrived home but she only smacked him.
“IF YOU WANTED TO BE A FUCKING FIGHTER WE COULD’VE STAYED IN SPACE.”
He flinched, lowering his head. “I’m sorry they just-..” he didn’t want to explain himself, at all. He just wanted to see Issac and make sure he wasn’t dead.
The doctor only said it was stage 1 and it couldn't have gotten worse.
except, It did.
Because he had been handed a packet of work to give to Issac.
Issac was “home” because he felt sick, He was an orphan with no way to pay for the hospital.
“I brought your schoolwork..” he held up the packet with a smile. Issac had a face full of pout.
“..It got worse,” he whispered. “I’m scared.” his voice was cowering, completely on the brink of breaking down.
Klaus' arms lowered with a packet in hand and his breathing became unsteady.
God knows what was going through Issac’s head right now, He just begged simply not to die. He didn’t want to die. Not yet.
Issac laid on the hospital bed in his pajamas reading a book. It was a chapter book, probably something along the lines of horror.
He had nothing else to do. But, he couldn’t wait to see Klaus. His heart raced in excitement.
Today was Klaus’ 17th birthday. He made one of Klaus’ butlers get him something from the store. He was saving up to get his own apartment but he’s 100 percent sure he wouldn’t be able to live in it.
He jumped off his bed when he heard Klaus open it.
But instead Klaus looked madly confused, instantly concerned as well.
“Why aren’t you on the bed.” he walked over. “get back up on the bed.”
He panicked and Issac dipped down under the hospital bed grabbing the gift he got.
“here.” he said quickly.
Klaus blinked twice. “for me?” and Issac nodded.
He flattened his lips and he squinted watching Issac crawl back into bed. He was satisfied with that action so he began to open his gift.
“Bracelet? you think ima’ white girl?”
Issac squints. “Open the star dick head.”
and so he did. The star had a picture of Issac and Klaus in Middle school.
Klaus felt his eyes soften at it and he turned his head.
“You can cry.” said in the most monotone voice.
“I don’t cry.”
“then cry so I can laugh.”
They both smile at each other and Issac chuckles.
Klaus wishes though he could make a wish that Issac got better.
It was May and Issac’s birthday was tomorrow and he didn’t know what to get him.
He had so many gifts from Klaus god he couldn’t get him the same book he’s been reading!
Klaus laid next to Issac as he slept in his arms.
Issac slept a lot.
a lot. He was scared Issac was going to sleep and never wake up.
But his heart remained calm when he felt his heart beating against him.
“Hey,” he whispered “I’m going home tonight okay?”
Issac tiredly lifted his head.
“m’kay..” he rubbed his eyes.
“bye..” he murmurs. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
He pulled himself off the bed and tucked him in. He watched him go back to sleep hoping he was still breathing.
Watching over him he realized how skinny Issac has gotten. He was always wearing baggy pajamas to cover it.
He finally left and went back home.
After school he went back to the hospital. He entered the room and saw Issac lay there.
He wasn’t reading a book this time or hiding weird gifts from klaus. He was just laying there looking at the ceiling.
“Issac? Happy birthday.”
Issac turned his head and he quickly slapped on a smile sitting up.
“Thank you.”
He was 16 now.
He would’ve been a Junior in highschool if he passed this grade this month.
But he didn’t, He barely did school work and next week was the last week.
Klaus sat in the chair next to the hospital bed.
“What do you want for your birthday? You have everything so it’s hard to choo-…”
“I want to see the stars.”
“The- Magic trick?”
He nods slowly. He was clearly weak, unable to agree.
“That’s not- Are you alright?”
Issac tilted his head. “Yeah why?”
“You want to see this stupid magic trick for your 16th birthday.”
Issac thinks. “What about the real stars?”
“…” Klaus stood up “We have to come back quick okay?” He felt uneasy doing this.
“You’re going to really take me outside to stargaze?” he smiled.
“It’s cooler than stargazing!” He now smiled harder and he swooped Issac up holding him in a bridal style. But, he couldn’t say anything, he felt like it was only natural.
Issac simply blinked as the window slid open. Was this another magic trick?
“Are you just full of magic tricks?”
“I guess..you can call it that?” he smiled at him taking the IV out and sliding out the window.
Issac jumped and quickly wrapped his arms around Klaus’ neck. “Wait, you’re GOING TO JU-…”
He didn’t jump; They were flying. Issac didn’t dare look down but he did look up at the stars sprinkled upon the sky.
Issac’s expression relaxed and he held Klaus close.
“Do you want to go higher..?” Klaus asked.
“..I can touch the stars?” he responded tiredly.
“..of course. You have your arms around one too.” he floats upward.
Issac’s blinks were delayed staring at Klaus. “You’re a star?” and Klaus’ nods.
“We can talk about it later.”
Klaus finally stopped, They were high in the sky above the clouds where you could fully see the stars and feel them shine on your skin.
Issac looks and he smiles.
“I love them.” Klaus was just happy to have him in the sky and to make birthday wish come true.
“I know. They’re perfect.”
Issac laid in his arms in silence. looking at them. Closing his eyes and opening them blankly, not even realizing.
“M’kay.” Issac randomly says. “We can go back down now…m’ gonna go to sleep.” His words slurred, falling into slumber each time.
Klaus stares and he laughed nervously.
“We can go to sleep when we get back down.”
Issac nods tiredly. He didn’t believe he heard.
“..Issac we can sleep when he get back to the hospital.” he said a little louder.
This time Issac didn’t respond.
was any part of his body responding? He picked up his arm but it fell back to the resting position. His breathing stopped and so did the heart he heard every time he hugged him.
“Issac?”
The constant repeating of his name didn’t wake him up at all.
Nothing did, not even when he screamed and cried holding his body close in the sky. squeezing him hoping he would wake up and call it a joke. He'd take a joke over reality.
He felt like his heart was ripped out his chest every scream to rile up a crying start.
He felt his whole world crash when he came back to the hospital room and laid him on the bed.
His head spinning trying to leave the hospital.
Nova looked from her papers and Klaus stood in front of the desk, He looked a mess. streaks of his brown locs turning gold and tears still rolling down his face.
Nova instantly stood up and she put her hands on his face and hugged him.
He felt the worst. The worst the world can offer him. His mother hugged him not even questioning why or what made him cry, just comforting him.
...
The funeral was even worse. He stares at the sleeping body laying in the casket, minimum people showing up considering he had no family or friends.
Klaus then asks while smiling softly.
“Do you wanna see a magic trick?”
