Chapter 8: Fun Facts

Summary:

Some fun facts about the characters and how they were developed.

Chapter Text

Since Fallout 4 is a different experience depending on what faction you choose, I wanted to have multiple protagonists to showcase the different quests & characters in each faction. As most factions have clashing ideals, the protagonists associated with each will clash as well or perhaps serve as a bridge to bring the factions together.

In a line of dialogue from Deacon, he implies that the Railroad is a much larger organization than the player is aware. Jacob Fowler and his flock of spies is an expansion of that idea. While developing the Railroad protagonist I liked the idea of a ghillie suit sniper like Captain Macmillan from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series or an eccentric spy master like Laurence Fishburne’s character in the John Wick films. I went with a mix of both.

The Player Character for Fallout 4 or “Sole Survivor” was one that I struggled to make up my mind on. I knew early on that I didn’t want the player character to necessarily be the main character of Atomic Waves. In early drafts the story focused on the game Companions’ pov of the player character: Nate/Nora. Since I already had two female original characters (Grace & The Gunslinger) I chose the male Sole Survivor and Soldier Backstory.

He kept his original game design up until I started writing and found his design too similar in description to other male characters. (A lot of them have dark hair and eyes) I went into the game character builder and messed around for a bit before settling on a look similar to the Vault Boy. I didn’t want to keep calling him Nate, so I changed his name to Norman the masculine version of Nora and his wife’s name to Natalie a feminine version of Nate.

(Early concert)

The gunslinger is in many ways my love letter to the western genre and the outlaw/gunfighter archetype. As such she is bits and pieces of several well-known fictional gunslingers including Clint Eastwood’s Man with no name and his Co-Star Lee Van Cleef’s two characters: Colonel Douglas Mortimer & Angel Eyes from the Dollars Trilogy.

Other inspirations include Roland Deschain from The Dark Tower by Stephen King & Sharon Stone’s “Ellen” from The Quick and the Dead 1995. Of course, I also took inspiration from real life gunslingers notably Martha Jane Canary aka Calamity Jane.

Wes Johnson voices a number of characters in the Fallout games including the Silver Shroud. He is referenced several times in Atomic Waves as Grace’s preferred portrayal of the character. Gene’s preferred choice is Orson Morrison. A fictional mash up of two actors: Bret Morrison and Orson Wells who both notably voiced *The Shadow* a radio character The Silver Shroud is based on.
