The Lone Inventor (PAW Patrol OC Story)

Summary:

Mya is an inventor who is always used to solving problems on her own, but when a fallen tree traps her inside her hideout, will she finally have to reach out for help?

Mya’s backstory plus her adventures around Adventure Bay!

I do not own any characters except for Mya.

Notes:

To be honest, I haven't seen an episode of PAW Patrol in years. I just got the random urge to make a PAW Patrol OC in June 2023 because I've never seen a human one before. I still have no idea how to add photos here, but you can find Mya’s ref sheet on my Instagram: @kitty.undercover

Chapter 1: The Lone Inventor (Mya’s Backstory)

Chapter Text

Mya is a young girl with a passion for anything and everything relating to technology. She was born without her left hand. Determined not to give up on her dream, she studied and worked for months to build herself a prosthetic, mechanical hand that can transform into all sorts of gadgets along with her visor sunglasses and smart watch. Her hand can turn in a magnifying glass, wrench, laser pointer, mallet, you name it! She didn’t want to be useless, pushed to the side, ignored, so that’s why she puts her heart into everything she does.

How she met Ryder and the PAW Patrol:

It was a stormy day in Adventure Bay. Everyone was advised to stay indoors until the weather cleared up. Seems simple enough. It gave Mya even more time to spend with her inventions in her hideout. She knows the townsfolk of Adventure Bay, but she doesn’t interact with them often since she practically ‘traps’ herself in her hideout as much as possible. She has trinkets, gadgets, and inventions galore. Who needs human interaction when you can write lines of code to make one online? It’s not that she’s incapable of making friends. Mya simply prefers artificial ones.

The problem arose when she heard a loud snap, thud, and rumble outside. She figured it was a tree falling nearby. She shrugged it off and continued her work.

After a while, the storm passed. She tried opening the door, but there was something blocking it. She used her x-ray vision from her visor and found out the fallen tree from earlier fell in front of her hideout all along.

She sucked in her teeth and double tapped the side of her visor to calculate all the successful possibilities she can escape without herself or inventions getting harmed. None of them were successful except for one with a one-hundred percent safety rate: call the PAW Patrol. She never called them before because she could handle emergencies on her own, but she couldn’t risk damaging years worth of work just because of a fallen tree on her own.

She deeply sighed and tapped the ‘call’ button on her smart watch waiting for someone to pick up on the other end.

“PAW Patrol. Ryder speaking.”

“A tree fell in front of my door and I can’t get out. Can you—?” She bluntly states, but Ryder interrupts her.

“We’re on our way!” The boy hung up.

She was surprised at how quick he understood her situation. All she could do now was wait around for the PAW Patrol to arrive.

A few moments later:

She started nodding off while she was waiting. She tried staying awake, but her tiredness took over. She folded her arms and slept upright in her chair.

Not-so-long after, Rubble and Skye were able to move the tree branch out the way. Ryder, Chase, and Marshall entered hearing light snoring sounds. Ryder slowly approached the chair and carefully turned the chair around, seeing Mya asleep. He gently shakes her shoulders to wake her. Chase presses his paw against her shin.

“Hello? Ma’am? We’re here to rescue you.”

Mya slowly opens her eyes and lifts her head up, accidentally getting very close to Ryder’s face. It didn’t help that from her visor, a cutesy, sparkly filter surrounded his face from her point of view that must’ve accidentally activated. She flails her arms and taps the side of her visor to turn it off quickly. Ryder and Chase take a step back.

“I’m sorry if I frightened you, ma’am!” Chase apologizes.

Marshall observes Mya’s inventions and equipment lying around.

“This looks cool…” Marshall reaches his paw out to touch something, but Mya quickly stands in his way to stop him.

“Please don’t touch anything! You don’t know what these can do. Heck, not even I’m sure what it does…yet.”

“Are you an inventor?” He asks.

“Inventor, engineer, technician, coder, you name it. Oh, almost forgot to introduce myself. I wanted to during the call, but it ended sooner than I expected.”

“Sorry about that again,” the human boy scratches the back of his head.

“Don’t worry about it. It was very quick service.”

“Well, that’s our job! If you’re ever in trouble, just yelp for help!” He enthusiastically encourages.

“Noted,” she smiles. “My name is Mya,” she sticks her hand out.

“I’m Ryder,” he shakes Mya’s hand. “A pleasure to meet you.”

“Likewise.”

“And these are my pups. Chase and Marshall.”

“A pleasure to meet you as well, ma’am,” Chase walks up to the two.

“Ryder is an inventor, too!” Marshall eagerly states joining the group.

“Is that so?” Mya’s interest is piqued.

Ryder nods and talks about some of his inventions. And by some, he talks A LOT about his creations just like Mya does. She’s surprised and delighted to find someone so suddenly who has something closely in common with her.

After that moment, everything seemed to fall right into place. Interaction by interaction and getting to know the other pups, she started opening up around them, especially towards Ryder.

Usually she’d politely decline help if it was offered to her. She still does, but she’s working on it knowing that she doesn’t have to go through things on her own. Maybe she would’ve made a lot more friends and allies in the past if she had done that. There was no turning back on those moments. Unless she and Ryder build a time machine, haha.

Speaking of Mya and Ryder, she discovered she had a lot more in common with him than she originally thought. They both like helping others, caring for animals, and perfection. They share so many similarities. The only difference is how they utilize it.

Ryder builds multiple hi-tech inventions swiftly while Mya builds practical yet advanced objects to help with her everyday life or for fun. Ryder helps at the scene while Mya helps from the Lookout also acting as security. The two may have different ways of getting things done, but to them, it’s their differences and bond that make them stronger together.

What’s another difference they have? One has feelings towards the other yet always denies it while the other is clueless. You’ll never guess who’s who in this situation, huh? Over the course of time, Mya developed those feelings for Ryder. Ryder is oblivious. Mya keeps these feelings hidden, but the pups and pretty much everyone she knows (not really) teases her while Ryder isn’t nearby, especially Skye and Katie.

She always denies the rumors, but alas, they don’t buy it. Mya loves spending time and being around Ryder. He and the others really got her out of her comfort zone for once. From assisting her in building her own vehicle so she can travel with the team: a spunky high-tech go-kart, to improving and updating her visor and prosthetic hand so she wouldn’t have to do it as often as she did before, she appreciates all the kind gestures the crew does. She hopes she can return all those favors someday, but they’ve already been fulfilled. Her being on the team was incredible enough. She may not have noticed, but she contributed a lot as well.

Keeping a protective eye out for the technology, maintaining the efficiency of all the gears and gadgets, showing Ryder her ways of inventing that are so similar, yet so different, everyone thinks it’s an amazing accomplishment.

Prior to a majority of the details, Mya was inducted as an official member of the PAW Patrol. She couldn’t have been more proud of herself. She steps forward to hug Ryder and thanks him. The rest of the pups happily bark, howl, cheer, then run up to the two and tackle them to the ground in a group hug. They lick their faces making Mya and Ryder laugh. Just like how Mya and Ryder originally met, their faces are close again. Instead of being nervous, Mya props herself up with her arm and continues laughing. Ryder sits up and laughs with her. Maybe this whole ‘human interaction’ thing isn’t so bad after all? With the addition of the pups, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Chapter 2: Helping Hand (Mya x Ryder)

Chapter Text

It was late at night in Adventure Bay. The pups and Ryder were asleep and it seemed like Mya was too, but she wasn’t. She was sitting in the main room. She couldn’t sleep. Not with her prosthetic hand acting up. Luckily, she’s ambidextrous, but it still didn’t feel like enough. She wished she had extra hands. She grumbled these wishes under her breath and continued working.

She tried to work as quietly as possible, but her tools kept making its usual wiring sounds. She sighed as she couldn’t help it and only hoped no one woke up. To her surprise and dismay, a certain someone did. She pauses and steers her focus at the sound of footsteps.

“Ryder? What are you doing up?” She whispered, sounding wary.

“I was getting a glass of milk.”

“You can’t sleep either?”

He shrugs. “Not really. I heard you were awake, too, so I figured ‘hey, let’s be awake together,’” he chuckles to himself.

“But you have a big day in the morning.”

“So do you. Every day always seems big, huh?” He smiles.

She nervously looks away and back to her hand. “Uh huh,” she continued, fixing her hand.

Ryder kneels down beside her. “Need any help?”

“I’m good, thanks,” she furrowed her eyebrows, raising her focus and intensity.

“Are you sure? Don’t be afraid to yelp for help.”

“I’m fine, really,” she mutters before lifting her hand away. “Tch!” She sucks her teeth, then looks back at Ryder. He really looks like he wants to help.

“That was nothing. Just a tiny mistake,” she brushes it off and continues. “If you really want to help, hold these tools,” she places small precision-making tweezers and wielders in his hands, replacing and reaching for a new tool occasionally.

She tries brushing off the fact she gently touches the palms of his hands when she does. She sighs and tries to clear her mind to regain her focus.

“Don’t you think it’s best you do this without actually wearing your hand?” Ryder suggests.

“I built it so I’m able to fix it while wearing it. It doesn’t take a toll on me…other than my patience…” she grumbles that last part under her breath.

Ryder takes another look at Mya’s hand. “I see what you’re trying to do. Lemme help you,” he extends his hand, but Mya shifts away from him.

“I’m—I’m fine. It’s not like you wouldn’t understand or anything. It’s just much more complicated than you probably already know,” it was actually quite simple. She just felt nervous accepting his help.

The thought of Ryder holding her hand, even if it was made of metal, still melted her heart. It was a simple gesture. What did she have to lose?

“You know what they say,” he holds all the tools in one hand and raises the other while wiggling his fingers. “Three hands are better than two.”

She lightly scoffs at the point he was trying to make. He even gained a small smile and an even smaller laugh out of her. “If you insist,” Mya finally accepts.

He happily sighs and sits beside her. Their arms and shoulders bumping constantly, giving each other brief technological tips during the process, they could only wish this moment lasted forever.

Mya looks at him whenever he focuses on her hand. He has the same focus and expression she had earlier. Did she really look like that when she’s serious? She turns her head back, looking at the sky from the balcony and smiles.

“I think that should do it,” Ryder says.

“You—you finished that fast? I thought this was gonna take me another hour or two,” Mya moves her hand and fingers around as well as changing it to a few different modes before returning to her regular-handed mode and smiles at Ryder.

She leans in and hugs him. “Thank you…I appreciate you so much.”

He slowly lifts his arms and wraps them around Mya, lightly squeezing her. “Just…yelp for help,” he repeats his usual saying, softly chuckling.

She laughs back. She doesn’t want to let go. She truly appreciated his friendship, his kindness, his loyalty, his patience, his intellect, everything about him.

She hugs him a little tighter than before and continues her small speech. “You mean more to me than you could ever imagine, Ryder. I—really, really like you,” she closes her eyes, not knowing if he’ll take that response.

He gently pats her back. “I like you, too. I’m very glad you’re on the team.”

He took it even lower than she thought; a mere work colleague. She lets go and places her hands on his shoulder with a plain, but slightly saddened expression. Ryder lifts his hand in front of him, realizing an important detail he missed.

“Oh! And friends, too! You’re my best friend, Mya,”

She plasters a small smile on her face. “You’re…a good friend, too, Ryder,” she gulps down and blinks away her tears. She of all people cannot cry in front of him.

Ryder notices her mixed and changing expression. Mya looks down at her lap, fighting the urge to look back at him and resisting even more to cry. As soon as she feels a tear fall down her face, she removes her visor and wipes her eyes, sniffing. As if a gate has been unlocked, more tears fall onto her lap.

“D-Do you need a tissue? I’ll go get one for you—”Ryder starts to stand up, but Mya holds his wrist. He looks down at her, confused.

Mya musters the courage and looks up at him with teary eyes. “…I like you, Ryder…” she hiccups.

His eyes widened in realization. “Oh! Y-You meant in that way?” She nods and sniffs again. Ryder sits back down to comfort her even more.

“Some days I think back on how I fell for you in the first place. Throughout everything we’ve been through, you’ve always been there for me. I thought doing everything myself was the only effective way for me to live. But you, the pups, everyone who showed me teamwork is more valuable than I could’ve ever imagined, that’s who I appreciate. That’s why I appreciate you , Ryder.”

Ryder gently wipes away tear streaks from Mya’s face with his thumbs. He rests his hands on her cheeks for a moment. “Are you sure you don’t need a tissue?” He jokes.

She chuckles while slightly shaking her head. “No, you goof.”

They smile at each other before realizing their faces are really close to one another’s. Ryder glances at her lips. Mya does the same to him. Before they knew it, they slowly leaned in, sealing the gap between them with a kiss. It was quick, but magical nonetheless.

Mya’s face was now red from crying and blushing. “I don’t wanna put my visor back on right now,” she laughs to herself.

“That’s fine,” he soothes, gently rubbing circles with his thumb over her face, wiping away more tears.

“You sure you don’t want to get that glass of milk?” Mya jokes.

“That can wait,” he pulls her into a longer kiss.

A few hours later:

They fall asleep in their seats with Mya leaning against Ryder’s shoulder. The ones who are awake shake and shush the oversleeping ones to take a look at the sleeping humans. They silently ‘awe’ while Skye takes a picture and sends it to Katie.

“Katie is gonna have the conversation of a lifetime in the morning,” she grins while the others quietly snicker.

Chapter 3: Alone in the Lookout

Notes:

I'm fighting the urge to binge this show so badly. It's still been years since I watched an episode, so there's only a very, very small portion of the show I actually remember that I'm able to write about.

Chapter Text

What does Mya do when the rest of the team is out on a mission?

One thing’s for certain; she has no issue staying behind and putting her technological skills to use behind the scenes instead. Sure, she feels the thrill of driving her hi-tech go-kart around, getting upgraded outfits to better equip her, and simply hanging out with Ryder which she’s ’subtly’ calm about, but there’s something about staying indoors she enjoys.

On the other hand, she also acts as extra security handling the manual functions and looking out for trouble when unsuspecting villains think the Lookout is empty. She’s never afraid to lend a hand.

Speaking of hand, she feels like she has all the time in the world to improve and upgrade her prosthetic hand. She considers it the greatest invention she ever made. She wants to try implementing a new feature that allows it to navigate its way back to her if it ever gets detached by force. The thought of her works being destroyed always unsettles her, so she shakes her head and gets started.

She goes to her invention area and takes off her hand, placing it in its designated holder, securing it. She holds down on a button underneath it to open up its mechanical gearing. She observes it to see how she can make her idea become a reality.

“Boomerangs return when you throw them…” Mya mutters to herself. “Maybe I can program something in the wires of the endoskeleton…but how would that work while I’m wearing it?”

She looks around and notices a toy RV car she promised Alex she would fix for him. She picks up the controller and drives it around the floor until she makes it bump into her shoe. She moves it backwards and thinks to herself again, placing the controller back on the table.

“I could always use a remote to move my hand, too.” Mya ponders on the idea, then snaps her fingers. “I could connect a GPS from my hand to my visor!”

She removes her visor and types on the enlarged keyboard from her smart watch. She syncs her current GPS system from her visor to her hand seemingly updating it on the spot.

“And now to test it out,” Mya closes up her mechanical hand and takes it out of its holder. She puts her visor back on and taps a button on the side. She holds out her left arm and it suddenly connects.

Then, she gets an even better idea. She brings out a punching bag and ejects her hand at it. Before it can drop, she controls it with the GPS system to reattach itself. She does this over and over again as it bounces back and forth from the punching bag and her hand socket.

“This is pretty fun!” She laughs to herself at her latest and greatest upgrade.

What else can Mya do in the meantime?

She looks at the Pup Pup Boogie gamepad on the floor. Now that she thinks about it, she never had the time to play it. She played rhythm games in the past, but never fully got into them. Maybe this can be her chance? She opens up the game, playing that catchy menu music, and chooses a song.

She taps her foot to the beat and starts dancing. She lets the electronic beat move her body. Point after point, star after star, combo after combo, she’s better than she thought.

“Now, for the big finish!” Inspired by Marshall’s tail spin, she moves her leg with enough force to perform a long pirouette. “Haaa!” She never took any sort of dance classes before. However, thanks to the knowledge of her own power, she uses enough force to make her spin last as long as possible and manage to maintain her balance.

Ryder and the pups return from their mission to see Mya still in motion. She jumps up, twirls in the air, and lands with a dynamic pose. The song ends. Mya catches her breath and feels like she’s on top of the world.

“A new high score?!” Marshall gasps in amazement.

Mya screams not realizing somebody was watching her, let alone everyone returning. She freezes up and clears her throat. She presses some buttons on the monitor to save her progress and turn off the game. “Oh…hey! Back so soon—?” She tries playing it cool by awkwardly crossing her arms. “How long were you here…?”

“A few seconds ago,” Rocky replies.

“You got to show me how to do that spin, Mya!” Marshall eagerly skips towards her.

“Spin? What spin? I wasn’t spinning. What makes you think I was spinning? Why would I spin? Haha…! That’s such a spinny—silly question!”

Ryder chuckles. “We’re glad to see you had some fun while we were gone.”

“Right—! Anyways, uh, how was the mission?” Mya tries changing the subject.

“Chickaletta floated out to sea somehow. Luckily, she was wearing a life jacket, so we reeled her back on land,” Zuma explains.

“Then we stayed a little while longer to pick up trash from the beach,” Rocky adds.

“Excellent upgrade—I mean, update. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to um, do something—somewhere,” Mya shuffles past the group and slides down the pole to the garage.

She slumps in her go-kart. She crosses her legs up on the dashboard and her arms over her chest, letting out an irritated sigh. She hears the squeak of the pole to her side. It means there could be one other person and one person only.

“The rest of the pups looked like they wanted to play Pup Pup Boogie for the rest of the day. Marshall really wants you to show him that spin you did,” Ryder casually approaches an embarrassed Mya.

Mya slowly turns her head at the boy and raises an eyebrow.

“Yeah…!”

She turns back around and sulks again, letting out a sigh. “I thought I would be doing something productive by the time you all returned. Not to me goofing off.”

“What’s wrong with goofing off?”

“It’s…unprofessional.”

“There’s nothing wrong with taking breaks, you know. Tell you what,” Ryder reaches out his hand. “Let’s play the game together. You versus me. What do you say?”

His kindhearted eyes and competitive words hidden within his lighthearted tone always manage to pierce through Mya’s titanium heart. She sits up to return the gesture with a determined grin.

“Let’s see if you can keep up.”

Ryder and Mya return to the lobby and see the pups playing the game themselves. It’s Zuma versus Marshall.

“Aaand tail spin!” They yell out at the same time as they do the movement.

Zuma’s tail spin is far more controlled than Marshall’s.

“WO-A-A-A-A-H!” Marshall spins all over the room eventually bumping into Ryder’s legs making him stop. He wobbles side to side before lying down to stop himself from feeling dizzy.

“Ooh…sorry, Ryder!” He looks up. “Have you and Mya always had an identical twin…?” He wearily focuses on the two.

This makes Ryder and Mya chuckle at the dizzy pup. Marshall shakes his head and stands back up. “I’m okay now!”

“Glad to hear,” Ryder kneels down to pet the klutzy Dalmatian.

Mya walks over to the monitor and chooses a new song. She looks back at Ryder. “You ready?”

Ryder quickly starts the game from his Pup Pad.

“Hey—!” She rushes over to the game pad and readies her position.

The two move in sync with the music. The pups cheer, bark, and howl in support.

“You’re better at this than I thought,” Mya says in between dancing.

“Let’s just say I learned from the best.”

“It certainly can’t be me,” she thought to herself.

“The pups!”

“Called it.”

Their scores were so close to one another’s. Although their banter was lighthearted, they were super competitive on the inside. Still, their overachieving spirits were subdued by the fact that they genuinely like spending time together.

The big finish was about to come up again. Mya and Ryder prepare their stances.

“Ready?” Mya briefly glances at Ryder.

“Ready!”

Mya and Ryder spin themselves, reaching bigger and better combos. For their finishing two-player move, Ryder eventually stops spinning as Mya moves closer. Ryder holds onto Mya and dips her with grace. A moment. They look into each other’s eyes and hear the sound of them breathing which makes them laugh a little more. The menu reappears. The scores are calculating…

“You won, sir!” Chase beams. The pups cheer again for Ryder’s victory.

Mya sucks her teeth. “You can put me down now…” she slowly accepts her defeat.

Instead, Ryder brings her back on her feet. Another moment. Mya twitches her lip trying not to be a sore loser, but Ryder notices this and continues to stay humble. He sticks out his hand again. “Good game.”

“Hm. Good game,” Mya shakes his hand, lightly scoffing.

“Does this mean you two are tied?” Marshall asks.

“Tied for what?”

“You won the first game earlier and Ryder won this one.”

“I mean, technically I danced alone, but if you want to consider myself a winner, I can accept that,” she crosses her arms and nods confidently.

“So does that mean you’re up for a rematch?” Ryder smiles.

Mya lets out a strong laugh. “When have I ever denied the opportunity to compete with you again?” Mya selects another song and turns the difficulty to the highest setting. “If one of us is going to win, we’re going all out!” Ryder can see his reflection through Mya’s visor, hiding the extremely competitive glint in her eyes. She grins widely as if she knows the outcome. “You ain’t seen nothing yet!”

Overconfident.

Oh my goodness.

Deep breaths.

Breaks.

Sleep.

Rest.

Especially rest.

Humbled severely.

Severely humbled.

“How have you not broken a sweat?!” Mya lies down on the floor simply staring at the ceiling. She feels like she’s sinking. Her jacket is on the ground beside her, her visor is resting on her forehead, and her energy is depleted.

Ryder crouches down slightly with his jacket now tied around his waist and his hands above his knees. He and the pups surround Mya.

“Are you alright, ma’am?” Chase slightly nudges Mya’s cheek with his nose. “Do you need water?” He asks out of slight concern.

“Yeah…” she breathes out.

“I got it! Water!” Marshall yells out.

“Wait, wait!” Mya sits up, making Chase quickly step back.

Out of nowhere, water splashes in Mya in the face. She coughs and spits it out with a blank expression. The pups try to hold in their snickering, but she can already hear them.

Marshall winces. “Oops! Sorry!”

Mya wipes her face with her hands to brush off the water. While all of that happened, Ryder returns with a towel and a proper bottle of water.

Mya takes the towel and dampens her face, then stands up with Ryder extended hand once again to help her up.

“Some days I don’t deserve you,” Mya shakes her head

“That’s what teammates are for. Remember: don’t hesitate to yelp for help.”

She chuckles. “You’re too kind for me, too,” she opens the water bottle and gulps. “I guess I’ll have to admit that you’re more skilled in certain activities than me.”

“All you need is some more practice.”

“Hm,” Mya looks away from him and takes another sip.

“I’d be happy to help you if you want whenever we have time,” Ryder gently squeezes her shoulder.

Mya closes her water bottle and looks back at Ryder with a small smile. “I’ll accept that invitation.”

Mya certainly learned an important lesson today: never underestimate Ryder.

But in actuality: Overconfidence can lead to over-exhaustion when you don’t know when to stop.

Don’t worry, Mya will be okay. A good night’s sleep will do the trick. Then, she might challenge Ryder to yet another rematch to reclaim her self-proclaimed title. That is if she isn’t occupied with her inventions or if the team needs to go on another mission. That’s most likely the outcome for tomorrow though.

Still, she’ll always remember this moment. Not the parts about her getting caught unexpectedly and losing twice in a row, even though she totally will, but getting to dance with Ryder as a whole.

There’s no denying there wasn’t some sort of connection between them during that moment. But this is Mya we’re talking about. Denial is her specialty. As for Ryder, oblivion is his.

Maybe one day he’ll acknowledge the moment in a more meaningful light. As for Mya, she lies awake secretly smiling and giggling to herself in bed. What a nerd, but she’s Adventure Bay’s nerd. At least one of them, that is. She wouldn’t change it for the world.

Chapter 4: I Don't Need Your Help

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

“Mya,” Ryder sternly follows her around as she packs up as much as she possibly can into boxes. “Mya, say something.”

“What else is there to put out? I told you time and time again, I don’t need your help. Ever,” each word she says is laced with irritation.

Ryder doesn’t want to be too confrontational, especially towards one of his closest friends. He tries keeping the peace as much as possible, but with Mya, peace is slowly becoming out of the question.

“Mya, you can’t keep leaving whenever something doesn’t go your way.”

Mya angrily slams her box to her desk and whips her head to the boy. “Will you shut up already?!“ Ryder steps back, startled. The pups huddle behind the doorway, alarmed. “I’ve stayed up day and night for you, and this is the thanks I get?! Wonderful, just wonderful. Absolutely splendid, ” she seethes with sarcasm. She turns back around and sighs. “I wish you never saved me.”

Ryder widens his eyes and silently gulps. “Mya, a tree fell—“

“And I could’ve helped myself! I always have! My hideout was the one place I could invent with no limitations.”

“You still can—“

“I’m not done,” she lowers her head and steps forward. “Meeting you and the pups has been the most stressful thing to ever happen to me,” she takes another step. “Every single day, these incompetent townspeople come crying to you about—a chicken stuck on a roof or an even more incompetent mayor from another town he can’t even bother to look after because he’s too busy committing crimes against humanity toward us!” Another step.

“Don’t you ever get tired of this? Don’t you ever think about running away together and live on our own?”

Ryder takes a moment to process Mya’s words. He’s scarily calm. “Did you say…run away together?”

Mya’s face drops. She steps back replaying the words in her mind. It’s a little slap back to reality, but she’s still agitated. “You and your silly little adventures,” she scoffs, trying to deflect the situation onto him.

“Mya, ma’am…” Chase steps forward looking concerned.

Mya looks away, grabs her box, and takes a deep breath. “I hope you find a better human partner. I quit.” As Mya takes her belongings, she becomes the first member of PAW Patrol to permanently leave the team.

To her surprise, Ryder is calm on the outside, but on the inside, he’s actually devastated that this happened in the first place. Maybe if he spoke more, there’s a chance he could’ve de-escalated the situation, although chances of that happening would be very slim.

Chase puts a paw on his shoe. The others surround Ryder as he drops to his knees. A tear falls down his face. As Mya steps onto the elevator, she only looks back once it descends and catches a glimpse of the saddened boy. She wants to feel pity, but she can’t shake off this grudge. So, she furrows her eyebrows again and turns away. This would be her final time seeing the team.

Notes:

We sure do love PAW Patrol angst over here, amirite? Just a reminder that none of these stories are connected to one another unless said otherwise. Like this story for example. Consider it an AU where Mya snaps or something. I dunno, man. I'm just writing for fun and to see how I write angst.

Chapter 5: Destruction

Notes:

TW: Blood

I don’t necessarily *want* to change the overall rating of this story to T, so only this chapter is rated T for blood and violence.

THUD!

Mya gets slammed into the ground along with her detached mechanical hand, visor, and smart watch.

“That—That’s impossible…” she always took extra precautions that those three inventions are secure on herself at all times. How powerful is this villain to have forcefully knocked off all three all at once?

Not only is she in immense danger, but she’s also in immense pain. She slowly inches towards her visor to grab it, but the villain steps behind it.

CRACK!

Prized invention number one: shattered.

Mya can’t stop replaying that scene in her mind. Speaking of her mind, it’s starting to feel fuzzy. She touches the side of her face on instinct to her visor, but notices the sight of her blood on her fingertips instead.

“No…you…you can’t do this to me…”

She shakily stands up and points at the villain’s head. Her fallen mechanical hand launches itself at the villain like a missile.

“You can’t possibly dodge this. It’s—!”

The villain manages to catch it before it could land a hit.

“…impossible…” Mya mutters in utter disbelief.

CRUNCH!

Prized inventions number two: …status pending.

The villain drops the pieces of her mechanical hand to the ground. Fortunately for Mya, she computed an automatic override system. She runs away as much as she can. The parts of the hand start heating up.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Prized invention number two: self destructed.

Her last minute resort to survival. Mya falls to the ground again from the impact of the multiple blasts. Surely, that must’ve left a mark. Alas, the mysterious villain emerges again. Now with a few broken parts on the disguise, but still not enough to know who it is.

The blast also pushed her smart watch closer to her. She manages to grab it and dials everyone on the team no matter if they’re downed or worse.

“Anyone…I need help…” she weakly announces before dropping it out of her hand.

The villain picks it up and observes it before tossing it in the air and blasting it into nothingness with a laser. The villain aims the laser at Mya’s shaking body.

Prized inventions number three: disintegrated.

This is it.

BLAST!

SWOOP!

She gets picked up and narrowly dodges the blast.

“…Ryder!?” She silently gasps as she’s held in his arms. He’s also severely hurt. “Please tell me the pups are okay…”

Those words seemed to get him. He presses his forehead against hers. “I’m so sorry…” he sobs.

Mya wraps her arms around him and hugs him as he silently cries on her shoulder.

Why did it only feel like yesterday when everyone was living their normal lives? Now, everything is destroyed. Their home, their friends, their allies, and soon, themselves.

“Ryder,” Mya coughs out. “There’s…only one way we can win, but…”

Ryder rapidly lifts his head up and places his hands on her shoulders. “Y-You told me you’d never program it!”

Mya slowly chuckles and somberly looks down at her pup tag on her jacket. “You know how stubborn I am.”

“You can’t do this to me…you…you can’t do this to yourself!” Ryder chokes on more of his tears. “Please…I can’t lose you, too…”

Mya presses the gear on her pup tag and glances at Ryder. “Initiate self destruction countdown.”

20.

Ryder freezes in place. He desperately wants to convince Mya otherwise. “Take off your jacket.”

19.

“It’s more powerful when I wear it, you know,” Mya closes her eyes.

18.

“Take off the jacket now.”

17.

She takes a deep breath and exhales.

16.

“MYA, TAKE OFF THE JACKET! THAT’S AN ORDER!” Ryder snaps.

15.

“Do you wanna know why I chose the number zero on the team?”

14.

Ryder reaches for Mya’s jacket zipper, but she catches his hand with her eyes still closed.

13.

“The number zero is very flexible. It’s the prequel to the start of a story.”

12.

“Or any number below zero.”

11.

“Adding it behind a whole number gives it a whole new value.”

10.

“Adding it behind a decimal? Not so much. But when added in front of a decimal, the value decreases.”

9.

“I’m not saying I barely mean anything to the team. I’m certain of that,” Mya slightly smiles. “But I’m flexible with all the challenges that come my way.”

8.

“Including this one,” she sighs.

7.

“With that said, it’s truly been an honor working with you, Ryder.”

6.

She looks at him with teary eyes. “You and the pups are the best thing to ever happen to me.”

5.

“And I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

4.

Ryder frantically unzips Mya’s jacket, but can’t get it through her arms. “I won’t let you do this! Please…!”

3.

“Let’s meet again someday.”

2.

Ryder pulls Mya into a hug, knowing the blast will be larger if they're both together. If she’s going down, he’s going with her.

1.

“I love you, Ryder.”

Notes:

Any guesses on who the villain is?

Chapter 6: Author’s Note #1

Chapter Text

This is just one big rambling and thank you note for all the support on Mya's story so far.

So, starting off, thank you!! The concept of me creating a PAW Patrol OC floated around in my mind here and there. I always kept thinking "hey, you know? I've never seen a human PAW Patrol OC before." And in June 2023, Mya was born (not actually, but you get what I’m saying, haha).

As I've mentioned before, I actually haven't seen an episode of PAW Patrol in years and I'm clinging onto the very faint memories I have of this show—

I sometimes change the channel to Nick Jr. if it's on, but only for a minute or two. So, I feel like in order for me to properly expand on Mya's character, I'll have to actually binge the show.

BUT THERE'S SO MUCH TO WATCH. You got 10 seasons, you got 2 movies, AND IT'S STILL ONGOING. I don't even think I can name more than 15 characters off the top of my head.

But then again, I'm binging Wild Kratts and that has 7 seasons, plus it's still ongoing, so I can't be talking that much, haha.

But even with that, I'm the slowest binge-watcher ever. I started binging it in March 2023 and I'm only on season 3. Sigh. It's most likely due to the fact I keep fangirling over Chris and Martin every single episode, but, uh, yeah.

I’m getting some serious déjà vu when it comes to thinking about my creation and thought process on making Clover (one of my Wild Kratts OCs in case you didn’t know. Also go read ‘Four Leaf Clover’) and Mya because both of them are very similar now that I think about it, haha.

Returning to the original topic (welcome to my ramblings 101 where that happens at any given time), I'm not exactly sure when I'll have the time to binge PAW Patrol because aside from binging Wild Kratts, I also got the urge to binge Handy Manny and I’m currently in the process of making a Handy Manny OC, so be on the lookout for that. Maybe I’ll start binging PAW Patrol in the summer? No guarantee, though, but at least it’ll give me more time.

With that said, if anyone has any PAW Patrol knowledge they'd like to share with me or story ideas with Mya, let me know! I'd love to hear it! Once again, thank you for the support of Mya and her adventures! There’ll be more coming soon!

Chapter 7: Mya's Birthday

Notes:

I'm so glad I managed to finish this on time. I got hit with horrible seasonal allergies once again and felt delirious for a week.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

She knows exactly what’s going on. She knows exactly why Katie and seemingly everyone in Adventure Bay is keeping her away from the Lookout today of all days.

“Happy birthday, Mya!!”

This morning…

Mya wakes up. She stretches, yawns, and then rubs her eyes. She freshens up in the bathroom and gets dressed for the day. Her hand hovers over the doorknob. She sighs with a smile before opening it.

Her face drops in utter confusion once she realizes where she is.

“How the—? How am I back in my lab?!”

The night before…

The pups and Ryder make an exact replica of Mya’s bedroom and bathroom in the lookout and connect it to her laboratory. How they managed to do that overnight might remain a mystery to Mya forever.

Back to the morning:

Mya is very conflicted. She’d usually feel if someone was shaking or moving her in her sleep. She looks back and forth from her bedroom to her lab. She looks around all three rooms wondering how this was suddenly possible.

“Well, I know for a fact I didn’t add any secret rooms in here. I certainly would’ve known if I did,” she speaks to herself. “I—better call Ryder,” she calls Ryder on her smartwatch, but he doesn’t answer. She calls again. No reply. “That’s not like him at all. What in the world is going on…?”

Meanwhile at the Lookout…

Ryder looks at his Pup-Pad seeing the missed calls from Mya.

“Sorry, Mya,” he sighs. He then calls Katie. “Ready for the next step?”

“I’m already there!” Katie cheerfully answers before hanging up. She knocks on the door to Mya’s lab.

—————————

Glad that her confused state of mind has been interrupted, she hears a knock and opens the door seeing Katie.

“Hey, Mya! Wanna take a walk with me?”

Mya peers around. Everything looks normal outside. Katie looks around with her.

“Are you looking for something?”

“No. It’s just…my day is starting off really weirdly, you know? Well, you wouldn’t know. No offense, and I think that’s a good thing,” Mya closes and locks the door behind her and starts to pace outside.

She proceeds to ramble about everything odd that happened this morning. The more she talks, the better it is for Katie. She simply listens and lets her talk.

“On top of all that, Ryder didn’t pick up any of my calls,” Mya quickly shakes Katie’s shoulders. “When’s the last time you’ve seen him? Is he in danger?!” She worries.

Katie laughs lightly and takes a step back, placing her hands on top of Mya’s. “He’s fine, Mya. The pups are safe, too. I think a walk will help take your mind off of things.”

“Yeah, yeah, maybe you’re right. I hope you’re right…”

Mya follows Katie’s lead. She walks inside her pet parlor.

“I need to gather some things. It won’t take long,” she walks behind her desk.

Cali walks up to Mya. Mya crouches down to her level and gently scratches her head. She purrs in delight before walking over to Katie. She returns carrying a medium-sized box.

“Do you need help with that?” Mya extends her hands.

“Nope. It’s alright,” she opens the door and places the box out front. Mya and now Cali follow her.

“What was in the box?” Mya asks.

“Honestly, I have no idea. Ryder just gave it to me,” Katie shrugs.

“What’s the deal with everyone being so vague today…?” It seems like the answer is right on the tip of her tongue.

“What do you mean?”

Mya hesitates. “Nevermind.”

“Is there anything you want to do today?”

“Have at least one interaction that isn’t out of the ordinary.”

“How about a meal at the café? My treat!”

“Hm, yes. Perhaps good will calm me down…why do I sound like that?”

“Great! Let’s go!” Katie takes Mya’s hand and runs. Cali meows and tries her best catching up to them at her own elegant, somewhat lazy pace.

The girls sit down outside at a table. Mr. Porter brings over two vanilla milkshakes.

“Oh, I didn’t—“ he walks away before Mya finished her sentence. “Oh, okay,” she opens the straw and takes a sip with no complaints.

Mya looks around at her surroundings. Nobody’s here. Come to think of it, Katie was the only person she’s seen in town today, and Cali was the only animal. Where is everyone?

Back at the Lookout…

The final preparations are underway. Ryder calls Mayor Goodway who’s at city hall and Cap’n Turbot at the beach.

“Is everything ready?”

“Chickaletta and I are ready!” Mayor Goodway smiles. Chickaletta clucks.

“All good over here, Ryder,” Cap’n Turbot nods.

“Perfect,” Ryder hangs up and turns his attention to the pups who were previously lined up and the monitor.

“Chase, Marshall, and Rubble, you three will go to city hall and meet up with Mayor Goodway. Skye, Rocky, and Zuma, you three will go to the beach and meet up with Cap’n Turbot. I’ll be heading to the café to get Mya and Katie.”

“Do I have to go to the beach? With all that…water?” Rocky shudders.

“It won’t turn into a pool party unless Mya wants to.”

“Please don’t be a pool party, please don’t be a pool party,” Rocky wishes. The rest of the team laughs.

“The weather’s warming up. It’s the perfect time for a swim!” Zuma chimes in.

“Yeah! Cannonball!” Marshall jumps in the air mimicking diving into water before realizing there isn’t any. He falls back down with a grunt. Everyone laughs again. “I’m okay!”

Once Ryder finishes his laughter, he returns to his professional manner. “PAW Patrol is on a roll!”

It feels odd not having Mya alongside transforming into work mode. Still, he remains optimistic driving to her and Katie’s location.

—————————

Mya and Katie continue chatting and catching up. Mya cherishes her friendship with Katie.

“I really wish I could hang out with you more often. I’m always extremely busy…”

“You’re always welcome to take breaks, you know?”

“That’s what Ryder always says,” she chuckles. “Wait a minute, speaking of which…”

As if his timing couldn’t be any more perfect, he shows up on his ATV.

“Hey, Mya! Hey, Katie.”

Mya quickly stands up and runs to him.

“Ryder!”

“Mya!”

She’s very cheerful.

“Ryder…!”

“Mya…!”

The closer she gets, it looks like she’s more…annoyed.

“…Ryder!”

“…Mya!?”

She grits her teeth and grabs his shoulders, essentially shaking him down.

“Where in the world have you been today?! Why haven’t you picked up my calls!? You won’t believe how worried I was about you and the pups! Where even is everyone in town? Did they all get captured by Mayor Humdinger or something! Explain yourself!” She angrily rants. Katie tries pulling her back, prying her off of Ryder.

The shaking causes Ryder’s spare helmet to fall off his seat, accidentally scaring Cali who just so happened to stroll nearby.

“MREOW!” She hisses and hides by Katie.

Mya snaps out of it and walks around the ATV to pick up his helmet. “Sorry…”

Ryder chuckles at her change of attitude. “No worries. This was for you anyways.”

She looks at the helmet in her hands. “For me?”

“Let’s go for a drive.”

She tilts her head a bit and raises an eyebrow. She looks back at Katie who smiles and waves.

“I don’t see why not,” she puts the helmet on her head and sits behind Ryder, securing her arms around him. “See you later, Katie.”

“Bye, Mya!” Katie waves again as Ryder drives off with Mya.

“Time to go to the beach, Cali,” Katie dashes off. Cali rolls her eyes in exhaustion and tries catching up once again.

—————————

Ryder continues driving Mya around Adventure Bay.

“You wouldn’t mind if we speed things up, would you?” Ryder turns his head for a brief moment.

“Uh, I don’t see why not!”

“Perfect!” Ryder revs up the handles and speeds through city hall.

In the blink of an eye, Mayor Goodway manages to put on a birthday sash around Mya. Chase, Marshall, and Rubble follow behind Ryder on their vehicles.

The team finally makes it to the beach. Ryder takes off his own and Mya’s helmet.

“Close your eyes…” he covers Mya’s eyes while guiding her someplace.

“Don’t smug my visor,” she jokes.

“Open your eyes,” he removes his hands, showing her the Lookout.

“It’s just…the Lookout…?”

“But that’s not all. Hit it, Skye!”

In her helicopter, Skye activates the lights, illuminating the Lookout in pretty purple coloring. Ryder turns Mya around to reveal everyone else.

“Happy birthday, Mya!!”

So that’s why everyone’s been acting strange today! It’s all coming together in her head. Cap’n Turbot comes by and puts a purple party hat on Mya’s head. Everyone else is wearing the same party hats.

Mya is speechless. Before she could get a word out, the pups excitedly tackle her to the ground while cheering and licking her face.

Skye lands back on the sand and runs up to the group to join in to smother Mya with love.

“Did you have a fun time with Katie? It was my idea!” She barks happily.

“I certainly did. You’ll have to join us next time, and Everest too! Speaking of which, where is she?”

“Right here!” Everest speaks up walking beside Jake who’s holding Mya’s birthday cake.

The pups let Mya stand up as everyone starts singing happy birthday. Mya closes her eyes and blows out the candles. Everyone cheers. As the party continues, everyone’s having a fantastic time. Maybe a little too fantastic. In the swoop of an eye, the cake disappears right in front of everyone’s faces. They hear a familiar sinister laugh.

“Mayor Humdinger?!”

“A delicious cake sitting out here all by itself? This treat needs to be cherished by none other than me! Mwuhahahahaha!”

His cats mew and taunt back. Ryder and Mya look at each other and nod.

“I know this might not be the greatest thing to do on your birthday…”

“Are you kidding? Defeating Humdinger any day of the week is one of my favorite—yet time-consuming—activities! Especially when I get to do so with you,” she smiles.

Ryder and Mya share a moment, that is before Chase clears his throat from behind with the other pups looking at the two.

“A-and the pups too!” Mya nervously adds to which the pups nod in agreement.

“So, what do you say? Ready to reclaim your cake?”

“Worst ‘cake’ scenario is that we’ll have to buy a new one,” Mya chuckles.

“Well, what are we waiting for?”

“PAW Patrol is on a roll!” Ryder and Mya announce.

Notes:

It's always a (fun) challenge to try and write PAW Patrol stories. Sorry if anyone seems out of character. Still, I appreciate those who still enjoy Mya's story =) happy birthday to her once again!
