Danny died and inhabited his corpse. But it slowly rotted and molded until he used the mold to hold himself together.
He found Bruce as Batman in the sewers and helped him. Decades later, Bruce has his Batfamily and Danny is part of it. But Danny's body is falling apart as he slowly runs out of ectoplasm.c he wants to rest but can't away from his grave in Amity Park but his parents have hunted him since his death.
They try to secretly bury him to rest in Amity. But they're captured by the GIW led by Maddie Fenton. Danny destroyed the base when they burned his corpse to extract his ghost. It allowed them to escape and the JL to rescue them. But Danny is gone.
Four years later Danny returns from the Infinite Realms. He's a sort of plant elemental representative of the Grey now. He never needed to hold onto his body but only learned after he lost his body.
He gets to meet Bruce's new kid Terry. Terry gets to finally learn why his extended family are so weird and grieving at a shrine of mold and mushrooms.
