The Book of Dragons - New Species Entries

Summary:

The Book of Dragons has had an update - here's a list of some of the dragons that have been discovered!

Notes:

I plan to insert some of these species into my new works.

Work Text:

Brackenwing: Mystery Class. A four legged green dragon with a single pair of wings that fade to umber brown at the tips. Small black eyes and blunt teeth made for grinding. Tail ends in three prongs designed for sweeping, stabbing and gripping at branches and undergrowth. Thick, black claws designed for gripping tree bark rather than fighting. Shoots a low-heat flame from its mouth that produces a lot of smoke. Suited best for thick forests and jungles. Herbivorous and will only kill when it feels threatened, however a severe lack of physical defenses makes this dragon incredibly skittish and quick to deem things threatening. Defends itself using camouflage and smokescreens. Hide is thin and easily penetrated, but very flexible for quick maneuvers. Very weak in battle against other dragons, but can kill a human with or without proper armor and weaponry. Hostility level: Mild Hostility. Speed: High. Size: Medium. Shot limit: 6. Trainable: Yes.

Luminous Lorelei: Tidal Class. An aquatic dragon with scales ranging from sky to midnight blue. This dragon lacks legs, instead bearing two pairs of large flippers, as well as a large dorsal fin and a vertical tail much like that of an eel, which is capable of delivering lethal blows. Glowing red eyes emit a form of light which cannot be seen by other species, aiding it in underwater vision. An individual Lorelei can be identified by a complex pattern of bioluminescent scales which range in colour from green to blue to purple and is different for every dragon. This dragon emits a hypnotic sound from a series of vibrating spines on its back which seduces and draws in its prey. Lorelei hides are tough, beautiful and retain their glowing capabilities long after death, making them highly sought after by Dragon Traders. However, this dragon is rarely seen as it inhabits ocean water too deep to be traversed by even that of a Scauldron. Possesses an incredibly venomous bite and is able to launch and regrow its needle-sharp teeth. They are considered solitary dragons and guard their territory vigilantly. They are known to come up to the surface during full moons to feed on glowing algae, as such this dragon has only ever been seen alive during these rare encounters and there is much to be learned about this dragon. Hostility level: Undetermined. Speed: Extremely High. Size: Medium. Shot limit: N/A. Trainable: Undetermined.

Blaze Burner: Stoker Class. Bipedal with blood-red scales and two pairs of golden wings which appear to have grown upside down at first glance. Golden frills frame its face and its tail ends in a series of red frills designed for dealing lethal blows. This dragon is not built well for flying and prefers hopping like a rabbit or lemur. It is very muscular and well built, standing upright with large legs designed for powerful kicks and scales as tough as iron. Its wings serve mostly for gliding, and possess large hooks at the tips. This dragon lives at high altitudes in mountains and on cliff faces. There are two evolutionary classes of Burners; cliff-dwelling and mountain-dwelling. Cliff-dwellers have far more spines, thicker claws, and their wings and frills are made of a membrane similar to sheet metal. Mountain-dwellers have far thicker scales that burn scorching hot, and can deliver a far hotter series of fire blasts that can melt rock in seconds. One can tell if a Mountain-dwelling Burner is near by large patches of land where snow has been melted away entirely. Burners are fighters and are incredibly territorial, however a lack of land and food scarcity means that Burners are constantly fighting each other. One can tell a Burners age by the amount of battle scars it has. Burners are commonly blamed for decimating entire populations of sheep and yak. They are commonly seen in illegal Dragon-Fighting rings. Burners are incredibly vicious and quick to attack anything they see. Docile level: Incredibly hostile. Speed: Average. Size: Medium. Shot Limit: 6 (C-D), 3 (M-D). Trainable: No.

Silvertail: Stoker Class. Can range in colour from gold to silver to bronze, with black horns, claws and teeth made for tearing and shredding. Not much is known about this dragons habitat or diet. This dragon occasionally appears flying through the sky during dusk. Historically it was considered an omen of either imminent fortune or misfortune depending on whether the dragon was flying east or west. A third, green-tinged eyelid provides it with a light filter which helps it see in the dark. Silvertail scales are invulnerable to fire and it has been seen taking down multiple inflamed Monstrous Nightmares at once. It can also shoot powerful fireballs and fire rings, and when given time to charge it can shoot a highly accurate length of fire similar to a ballista bolt. Its tail has a sharp barb on the end that can inject liquid silver into a dragons bloodstream, however delivery of this silver can often cripple or even kill the Silvertail, so it is used sparingly. Due to the fireproof properties and sheer beauty of Silvertail scales, as well as the milkable nature of the liquid silver, they are highly sought out by poachers. This species is gentle-natured and and has been nicknamed "The Peacekeeper" by some, but is no stranger to attacking when provoked or in self-defense. Hostility level: Largely Docile. Speed: Slow. Size: Large. Shot limit: 6 regular shots, 2 if Fire Ballista is used. Trainable: Yes.

Blood Banshee: Tracker Class, previously Stoker Class. A blood-red feathered dragon often seen living in packs around active volcanoes. Scavengers, these dragons will track down fresh kills and swarm the dragon responsible, overwhelming it and driving it away from its meal before taking the kill as their own. They emit loud screeching noises in order to disorient other dragons as well as communicate with their own pack. Each pack has a different pitched screech, and it has been noted that when packs merge, their differing pitches will balance out in a matter of days. An individual Banshee can shoot small embers of flame which will explode upon contact with other embers. A pack of Banshee firing embers at one target can produce an explosion equal to that of an average Zippleback gas explosion. These dragons rely on their packs to survive; solitary Banshee are highly at risk of being killed by larger dragons. Unlike other pack dragons, Blood Banshee do not have a designated leader. Banshee feathers were historically valued for their fireproof nature, however today they are valued far less in contrast with other alternatives. Hostility level: Extremely Hostile. Speed: Fast. Size: Small. Shot limit: 6. Trainable: No.

Horrendous Ground-Dweller: Strike Class. A relative of the Hideous Zippleback, this wingless dragon sports two heads atop one body. One head shoots a hose of green gel, the other a small burst of flame which lights the gel like a flamethrower. Incredibly small and in possession of beautiful scales in every colour variety, this dragon is often treated as a lap-dragon and is commonly owned by rich businessmen and nobles alike. In truth, Ground-Dwellers are less than docile; they are incredibly intelligent and display a great show of teamwork, accredited with burning down the houses of owners who treat them unfairly. They have also been blamed for massive forest fires, destruction of crops and mass-melting of weaponry. Common folk consider them quite pesky as they constantly terrorise villages for food. They are also quite protective of other dragons their size and will frequently raid storehouses where dragon-killing weaponry is kept. Hostility level: Mild Hostility. Speed: Relatively fast. Size: Very Small. Shot limit: 6. Trainable: Yes.

Shore Sweeper: Tidal Class. A bipedal blue-yellow dragon which lives on sea stacks and seashores. Webbing on its feet and large, powerful wings enable this dragon to run across large bodies of water as if it were gliding on air. It is a powerful swimmer, able to force its way through even the strongest of currents. It is also able to traverse on land. It is covered in sharp spines and its scales are incredibly thick despite its light weight. Shore Sweepers are strong and passionate fighters, and are often considered counterparts to Blaze Burners due to their similar methods of ruthless claw-to-claw combat. They have strong tails, legs and immense jaw strength. Fighting often takes place underwater, especially when fighting a dragon without gills. It is unknown why Shore Sweeper are so eager to fight, but they are known to show immense respect to opponents that beat them. Hostility level: Mild Hostility. Speed: Very Fast. Size: Large. Shot limit: N/A. Trainable: Yes.

Odin's Nemesis: Stoker Class. Nobody knows if this dragon really exists. This armor-clad dragon is said to be the Ungodly Personification of Depravity and Torture. Said to be without conscience or mercy and has killed more dragons than any Hunter fleet could possibly dream of. Its only weakness: Susceptibility to mind control. Kill as soon as you have the means. Hostility level: Extremely Hostile. Speed: Slow. Size: Massive. Shot limit: Unknown. Trainable: You'd have to be a madman to even dream of it.

Ghoulish Gore-Wraith: Strike class. Generally amethyst or mauve in colouration. Iridescent gold wing membrane reflects light aiding in camouflage during night flights, as its wings appear silver under moonlight. Sports cloven hooves instead of talons and bares a mane of hairlike spines resembling the baleen of a whale. Its tail bears a similar baleen-esque tuft at its tip. This dragon can sometimes be found in paddocks impersonating livestock. It has been known to raid farms in the black of night and steal a single cattle or horse, flying away with it and quickly killing it thereafter. It will then eat the entire carcass, bones and all. At dawns break, the Gore-Wraith will take the place of the deceased animal in the hopes that its absence will not be noticed. This technique appears to work on horses and bovine, however few Vikings have ever fallen for its trickery. Farmers beware: listen for the telltale sign of its presence - a blood curdling, radiant scream. Hostility level: Mild Hostility. Speed: Average. Size: Medium. Shot limit: 6. Trainable: Yes.

Strangewing: Mystery Class. Sky blue scales from head to tail with wing membrane ranging from dark blue to purple. Four thick legs with hoove-like claws and two pairs of small wings. The large horn growing on its nose serves as a means of protecting its face as it sniffs the earth below while it searches for food. A distant relative of both Razorwhips and Stormcutters, the Strangewing possesses neither razor-sharp spines nor exceptional maneuverability. Its small wings and hefty form make it rather clumsy in flight, though its bulk is also inadequate for self defence and any form of stamina is notably absent. Strangewing fire is a significant candidate for the coldest fire in the dragon world. Strangewings live in small packs nestled in nooks and crannies throughout most biomes, though they prefer to inhabit the edges of forests where possible. They are rather docile in nature, rarely ever showing fear or hostility. It is unknown how this dragon is even capable of surviving to adulthood. Hostility level: Docile. Speed: Slow. Size: Medium. Shot limit: 4. Trainable: Yes.

Strikeslip: Boulder glass. This rarely-seen dragon possesses four short legs and durable claws. It has an elongated body cloaked in bronze scales that have proven to be incredibly fireproof, and dark spikes line its back. Yellow-gold wing membrane stretches across its large wings - Strikeslips are usually seen sporting tears and holes in the membrane. Strikeslips prefer to live in areas with high geological activity, such as volcanoes and along fault lines. They often herald the existence of previously unknown fault lines, and their presence is commonly interpreted as an early warning of an oncoming earthquake or eruption. Nobody is quite sure how these dragons detect such events, though theories suggest that their sensitive ears are able to pick up on noises deep below the earth. Strikeslips have collapsible skeletons and are able to slip into very small cracks in rock formations in order to feast on geodes and mineral deposits. Strikeslips are frequent breeders and lay a significant number of eggs, though observed packs are generally small in numbers and it is not often that remains are discovered. This has lead to the beliefs that Strikeslips either eat their young, or that there are entire colonies of the species living under the earth, within cracks in the rock or perhaps in magma chambers. Hostility level: Unknown. Speed: Average. Size: Medium. Shot limit: 8. Trainable: Undetermined.

Sandwyrm: Strike class. Quadrupedal dragon with scales that range from yellow-white to gold. A single pair of wings which appear yellow-white from below and amber-gold from above. Sharp tail designed for stabbing. Long scales form a frilly mane around their neck. Sandwyrms have the ability to stand on their hind legs for long periods of time, using their tail for balance. They are solitary dragons who prefer to live alone or as couples, however they are generally peaceful and will remain civil among unfamiliar dragons. They possess an eerie level of human-like intelligence, and some Vikings speak of hearing them 'talk' to one another in a cryptic language. Whether they are truly capable of speech has yet to be confirmed. Sandwyrms have been observed using tools made of many different materials, and have proven to be very resourceful and innovative. Hostility level: Generally docile. Speed: Fast. Size: Medium. Shot limit: 6. Trainable: Undetermined.
