Work Text:
Arctic shivered at the cold midnight breeze despite his thick fur.
He had woken up a few moments earlier from a dream that was now long forgotten. He was used to this now. It has happened even before Dove—His parent—had taken him and Winter in.
"Arctic?" A voice cut through his thoughts.
Speaking of the Devil..
"Arctic, what are you doing out so early? You'll catch white-cough!" Dove meowed, padding to sit next to him.
"I'm fine," He replied, not bothering to turn to them.
"No, you aren't." She insisted, "What's wrong?"
StarClan, does she ever keep her nose to herself?
"I said I'm fine," Arctic hissed, glaring at his parent. "Now go away."
Dove narrowed their eyes but didn't push further. Instead, opting to sit next to Arctic in silence.
"I said go away, mom," Arctic glanced sideways at Dove.
Dove stared at the road in front of them silently as if she didn't hear him.
How dare they ignore him?
"Ugh, mom! Go away!"
"..I miss her,"
Wasn't expecting that. "Er..huh?" Usually Dove had some warning signs she was in that weird vent-y mood.
"I can't believe it's been 9 moons...and I still expect to feel her fur next to me.."
Arctic begun slicing at the grass beneath his paws. He considered just leaving but last time he did he had to hunt his own prey the next half-moon.
"She..she had your eyes, y'know? Rain was very beautiful. Nearly everything about her was perfect," Dove continued her rambling, not even sparing Arctic a glance "That must've been why StarClan took her away from me."
Arctic got up, interrupting Dove "Uhuh, mom, let's go back to our nests. You must be feeling tired, right?"
"StarClan always just has takes everything away from me. First my mother, then my face, and then my mate..They've stripped me of everything and still expect me to follow them? Fools they are, Arctic, fools,"
Arctic didn't want to bother answering at this point. It never changed the outcome, it never did.
"You and Winter should be glad I decided to not stay at those wretched Clans. Only trouble staying there. Eating cats..keeping criminals in their safety..No cat in those groups are good. They led Rain to her death. StarClan probably told them to." Dove hissed as she started sheathing and unsheathing their claws. "Mousebrains. They should be punished."
"Punished?" He echoed without thinking, curiosity winning over.
"Yes. Punished," She looked over to him, although her eyes seemed distant. "Punished for killing her. I'm going to hunt them all down and make them pay."
Ookay, that was not normal, "Uhm, mom, no. You're clearly tired and aren't thinking correctly. Go back to your nest," Arctic nosed his mom up and towards their wooden makeshift den despite her complaining.
"Arctic, do you have bees for brains? I am not tired!"
"Hush. You are. Go to sleep," Arctic successfully got his mother to sleep after what felt like moons. He still mulled over what Dove said.
She..no. No, she wouldn't. She just wasn't in her right mind. They never are during these weird moods.
..Right?
