Chapter 1: When It Rain's, It Pours
Chapter Text
Gareth lost interest in many things he had once enjoyed, after Eddie died. When he stopped having band practice in his garage; Jeff and Dan didn't see the point in it anymore. His drum set and dnd stuff sat in his mom's basement, collecting dust.
He did anything and everything he could, to numb the pain of losing his best friend; like excessive drinking and recreational drugs. No longer was he the same Gareth, he just stopped caring.
He stayed in his room a lot and slept more than he ever had in his life. His mom worried about him constantly, and he didn't recognize the version of himself, he had changed into.
But, once he started that downward spiral of a path, there was no return.
After barely graduating from Hawkins High, he fell out of contact with his friends. They stopped dropping by the Emerson home, when Gareth started getting angry and refused to come to the door.
His mom gave him a hug after the graduation ceremony and told him she was proud of him; but he couldn't see why she would be.
He was hardly someone to be proud of, he thought to himself; getting the bare minimum credits and grades to graduate.
He started going to house parties, that he would never even think of going to in the past. Drinking until the pain went away, he enjoyed feeling detached from himself; he didn't have to feel anything.
His friends still loved him despite him getting angry; but refused to watch him destroy himself like that.
Gareth got a girl pregnant at one of the parties, who he later found out is named Anna; they met that same night. The more they drank, the friendlier they became with each other; until all rational thoughts were long gone.
At one point, she pulled him into a dark corner, and the two of them started making out. It was the most attention he had received from a girl, ever; and he was soaking up every moment of it.
She kept telling him how cute he was, playing with his hair; but he knew now that was the alcohol talking that night. She could barely stand to look at him anymore, even though he knew she had just as much a part in this mess, as he did.
One thing led to another, and soon the two of them were sneaking inside a spare bedroom.
Gareth let out a drunken chuckle as he clumsily removed his clothes; letting them fall wherever he happened to toss them. It happened quickly and he barely remembered part of it, was he even any good? he doubted it.
All he knew was he woke up with the worst hangover of his life the next morning; his mom watched him with disapproval, as he passed her in the hallway on his way to the bathroom.
Finding out her son got a girl pregnant, while drunk at a strangers house, of all places; it was the first time in his life, that his mom had honestly been ashamed of him. He didn't want to believe it, when Anna called him after using a few pregnancy tests; hoping the first one was inaccurate.
She was absolutely hysterical on the phone, while Gareth listened to her on the other end; he felt like he was having one of those out of body experiences, he had seen in a few movies.
After him and his mom had a fight, he left home for a little while.
He stopped at the drug store after leaving the house, grabbing a six pack of beer and a pack of cigarettes; his current pack nearly gone.
"rough day?" the cashier asked, taking in Gareth's weary appearance
"you have no idea" Gareth replied, tiredly
"take it easy, kid" the cashier said
Gareth wasn't sure what made him drive to the apartment complex Jeff lives in, but he showed up there nonetheless.
He had ran into Jeff's mom at the grocery store a week before and she mentioned he moved into an apartment.
He drank a beer on the way there, he needed something to relax him before attempting to talk with Jeff.
That is if Jeff would even let him in, he doubted he would let him in. He wasn't sure which apartment was Jeff's; but he figured someone could point him in the right direction.
Soon he was pulling up in front of the apartment complex, he looked at the first set of apartments with a daunting feeling; he hoped it wouldn't take long to find Jeff's.
He got out of the car, pulling out a cigarette and lit it, bringing it to his lips; he let out a relaxed exhale as he took the first puff.
A few people walked by, glancing over at Gareth, he nodded in reply; before pulling the hood up on his sweatshirt; it had started to get a little windy.
When Gareth was halfway through his cigarette; he spotted Jeff walking towards the dumpster at the far end of the parking lot; taking his trash out.
He kept a wary eye on Jeff as he tossed a bag in the dumpster, then started walking back. Gareth took another puff from his cigarette, then let out a deep exhale.
A moment later, Jeff noticed Gareth watching him out of the corner of his eye; Gareth got a little anxious as he did.
"Gareth?..." Jeff said hesitantly, he wasn't a hundred percent sure; because of the hoodie, but noticed a few curls sticking out
"Yeah, its me" Gareth said, in a somewhat dull tone of voice
Jeff walked over to Gareth's car
"geezus Gareth, you look like shit" Jeff said, taking in the sunken in look of Gareth’s once slightly chubby cheeks.
"thanks for that.." Gareth said, chuckling humourlessly
"what are you doing here?" Jeff asked
"I'm not exactly sure myself; your mom told me you moved, so here I’am" Gareth answered, before taking another puff from his cigarette
Jeff let out a deep breath, watching Gareth for a few seconds
"when did this start?" Jeff asked, gesturing to the cigarette in Gareth's hand; as he tapped some ashes out, onto the gravel below
"few weeks ago" Gareth answered, nonchalantly
"this is stupid, this isn't you" Jeff said
"sorry to disappoint you, I guess" Gareth replied, shrugging; “we can’t all be as virtuous as you” he continued, in a bitter tone.
”you’re not the only one that lost Eddie, man” Jeff said, trying to sound sympathetic
“I know that!” Gareth snapped at him
Jeff backed a few feet from Gareth, sighing
”whatever, it’s all bullshit anyways” Gareth muttered, sitting on the hood of his car; before taking another puff from the cigarette.
Jeff went silent for a moment, not sure what to say next; while Gareth finished his cigarette.
"you gonna invite me inside or what..its getting cold out here" Gareth said
"alright then, lets go" Jeff replied
Gareth nodded and grabbed his duffel bag from the back seat, along with the other cans of beer; Jeff shook his head when he noticed them.
The two of them walked into Jeff's apartment; Gareth glanced around before sitting down on the couch.
"It's been weeks Gare, and all the sudden you just show up at my apartment...what's going on?" Jeff asked.
Gareth opened a second beer and took a sip; before answering, "my mom and I had a fight".
"About what?” Jeff asked, wishing he wouldn’t drink in the apartment
"I got some girl pregnant at a party" Gareth answered, in a matter of fact tone
"That's great..that's really fucking great.." Jeff said, disgust clear in his voice
"It's not a big deal" Gareth said, in an annoyed tone
"It is a big deal! You have to take care of this!" Jeff shouted at him
"Calm the fuck down!" Gareth shouted, angrily "She'll probably just get an abortion or something" he said, letting out an exasperated sigh.
"Just get an abortion or something.." Jeff repeated "Do you have any idea how hard going through an abortion might be for her...did you even think about that?" Jeff said.
"Not really..." Gareth replied, taking another sip from his beer
"Unbelievable..." Jeff said, and Gareth ignored him
It was starting to get dark, and Gareth got up from the couch to leave; grabbing his duffel bag
Jeff glanced out the window, then said, "just...please, sit back down"
"okay.." Gareth muttered, sitting back down
He sat his duffel bag back down on the floor and leaned back against the couch; making a huff noise.
There was an awkward moment of silence, before Jeff spoke again
"Where exactly were you planning to sleep tonight?" he asked Gareth
"My car..obviously" Gareth said, rolling his eyes "you don't need to worry about me, I'm not a child".
Jeff got angry, slamming a plastic cup on the counter; that he had just been drinking out of moments ago.
"I don't even know why I bother anymore" Jeff said, throwing up his hands in frustration
"I don't know why you do either" Gareth replied, sadly
Jeff calmed down a moment later; "We worry about you Gareth, a lot" he said
"You would never even come to the door; Dan and I tried to show you we care, so many times" Jeff said, sadly.
A few tears started to run down Gareth's cheek; his cold demeanor breaking
"What is it? Talk to me" Jeff said, moving from the armchair; and sitting next to Gareth on the couch.
He looked at Jeff with red rimmed eyes, Jeff placed his hand on Gareth's upper back; attempting to help comfort him.
"I don't know what I'm doing with my life anymore, Ed's would be so disapointed in me; just like you and Dan are." he said, his voice cracking.
"We're worried about you, we want the old Gareth back" Jeff replied
"I don't think he's in here anymore, its too late" Gareth said, pointing to himself
"It's never too late, but you have to want to get better." Jeff said, seriously
"I suppose I can try" Gareth said, with a sigh
Later that night, Jeff made up the couch for Gareth; grabbing a pillow off his bed and a warm quilt from the hallway closet
"Here you go, get some sleep okay" Jeff said
"okay" Gareth said, in a quiet tone
”You need anything else before i go to bed?” Jeff asked
”No, i’m good” Gareth answered
"alright, good night buddy" Jeff said
"yeah, you too" Gare replied
Jeff nodded and started walking away
When he reached the hallway, Gareth spoke again
"Jeff, wait" he said, and Jeff turned around
"yeah?" Jeff asked
"thanks" Gareth said
Talking with Jeff, was the jolt of reality that Gareth needed.
He returned home the next morning, practically collapsing into his mom's arms, sobbing.
"I'm so sorry, mom, for everything" he said, through tears
"It's gonna be okay" his mom replied, rubbing his back
She held him for a moment before saying, "Come on into the kitchen, and I'll get you some breakfast" .
Gareth nodded and followed his mom out of the front room
As the delivery date got closer and closer, Anna and him argued what to do about the baby; tossing around the idea of putting the baby up for adoption.
"I didn't want this" Anna said, angrily
"Well shit, neither did i" Gareth fired back
Any thought of adoption left Gareth's mind, when he saw their baby boy.
He's the most perfect thing Gareth had ever seen; with the same blue eyes and chestnut brown hair as him.
Anna said that she didn't care what they named him, she didn't want anything to do with either of them anymore; after Gareth told her he was keeping him.
He named him Edmund after Eddie, he knew that Eddie would like the name; and he thought that Edmund Emerson had a nice ring to it.
The moment Gareth brought Edmund home, he vowed to get it together; and be the dad that his son deserves; the kind of dad Gareth never had.
Gareth's mom adored Edmund from the moment she held him in her arms; although she hadn't planned on becoming a grandma this soon, she was very excited and couldn't wait to spoil him.
She told Gareth that Edmund looked just like his baby pictures, then proceeded to grab the photo album containing them; showing Edmund, even though he was much too young to fully comprehend.
It was the same for Jeff and Dan, they were so happy to become Edmund's uncle's; the two of them taking turn's holding him; they instantly formed a bond with Edmund.
***TIME JUMP***TWO YEARS LATER***
After Edmund turned two, Gareth got his own apartment for the both of them.
The day after moving in, there was a knock at the door
Gareth opened the door curiously, the girl in the apartment next to him, introduced herself as Chrissy. She wore her blond hair down, around her shoulders.
She handed a plate of chocolate chip cookies to Gareth, and said, "I noticed you carrying in a few boxes yesterday, and thought I would come say hi".
"Yeah, my son and i, I'm Gareth by the way, thank you for the cookies" he replied, politely
She was surprised to hear that he has a son, but gave him a friendly smile in return.
The next moment, Edmund was there, wrapping his small arms around Gareth's leg
Before Gareth could speak, Edmund looked up at him, asking, "Dadda, who’s this?" as he timidly glanced at Chrissy.
"This is Chrissy from next door, can you say hi?" Gareth told him, ruffling Edmund's curly hair
Edmund hid behind Gareth's leg, one eye peeking out, through his messy curls
"Edmund's a little shy" Gareth told Chrissy, chuckling lightly
Chrissy's smile dropped when she heard his name; it immediately made her think of Eddie.
"You okay?" Gareth asked in a kind voice, his blue eyes studying her expression; further reminding her of Eddie.
"I'm sorry, I have to go" Chrissy answered, stepping back
"Oh..okay, we'll see you around I suppose" Gareth said, with a surprised look on his face
"Ya..great" Chrissy said, walking away; leaving a confused Gareth standing in the doorway
Chapter 2: Not Alone
Summary:
Gareth and Chrissy have a conversation in his apartment, the two of them getting aquainted
Chapter Text
That night, Gareth was giving Edmund a bath before bed time.
He loved watching the water bubble up, when Gareth poured in a bit of mr. bubble, bubble bath.
”Dadda” Edmund said
”hmm?” Gareth replied
”Why did momma leave?” Edmund asked
Gareth took a deep breath before answering, he knew their son would ask about Anna someday; but it was still a difficult thing to explain.
”She wasn’t ready to be a mom, i’m so sorry about that, sweetheart” Gareth answered, sadly.
”It’s not your fault, Dadda” Edmund said, reaching out a slightly soapy hand, to touch Gareth’s.
Gareth smiled fondly at him, “thanks, buddy” he replied
Edmund scooped some of the water up in his small toy boat, then dumped it back out a few times; distracting himself a little.
After working the shampoo and conditioner through Edmund’s hair; Gareth shielded his eyes with his hand, using a plastic cup to rinse it all out.
”is Momma pretty?” Edmund asked
”yeah, sure” Gareth answered
Edmund thought for a moment, then said “Chrissy’s pretty”
Gareth swallowed nervously, then replied “she is, very pretty”
After wrapping a towel around Edmund and drying him off; Gareth got him changed into a pair of green plaid pajama bottoms, and a white t-shirt.
Edmund’s eyes were drooping sleepily, as Gareth tucked him into bed.
”goodnight buddy, love you” Gareth said, kissing his forehead
”love you too, Dadda” Edmund replied, in a sleepy voice
Gareth turned off the bedroom light; the glow of the night light casting a soft light across the floor.
Gareth laid in bed that night, thinking about the exchange with Chrissy. Something had set her off, but he had no idea what it was.
He usually had a few things on his mind while laying in bed; the quietest time of the night.
Sometimes he thought, it would be nice to have someone to come home to, besides Edmund of course.
He didn’t mind sleeping alone, but it would be nice to have a woman to talk about his day with; or anything really.
He had to make sure that they would care about Edmund as much as he does though; because his son comes first, always has.
The next day, Gareth was hoping he would be able to catch Chrissy going to or from her apartment.
He just wanted to make sure she was alright, after she left so abruptly. But he seemed to keep missing her throughout the day.
Gareth was sitting out a box of recyclable’s that night, when he saw Chrissy; he had nearly given up on talking with her for the night.
She had a pale pink purse in one hand and was grabbing her keys out of her pocket, with the other hand; when she saw Gareth.
”hey Chrissy, you just getting home for the night?” Gareth asked, hoping he didn’t come off as the nosey neighbor.
”uh, hi Gareth, yeah” Chrissy said, a little nervously
”cool, cool, i just wanted to make sure your alright, after last night i mean.” Gareth said
”oh right, about that..i was just uh having one of those nights, ya know?” Chrissy replied
Gareth looked at her with a questioning expression, “what are you not saying?” he asked.
”it’s nothing really” she said, backing up with a scared expression on her face; a bit like a cornered animal “I’m alright, just..please drop it, Gare”.
”i’m so sorry, i didn’t mean to scare you at all, that was the last thing i…you called me Gare, no one’s called me that since..” he trailed off, and Chrissy nodded knowingly.
Both of them realizing what was happening, without saying much. Chrissy supposed that Gareth wasn’t a very common name; but she didn’t realize her new neighbor would be that Gareth.
”you know Eddie?” Gareth asked, his voice breaking slightly; before his breath caught in his throat
Chrissy nodded slowly, with a sympathetic look on her face, “he sold me weed for a while; he mentioned his best friend once, referring to him as “Gare”. I never thought that..i’m sorry” she said in a shaky voice, then turned towards her apartment door.
Gareth stepped forward, gently grabbing her arm; “wait..please?” he said
”okay” Chrissy breathed out, turning back around
Gareth invited her inside his apartment, gesturing for her to sit down at the small kitchen table.
”would you like something to drink?” he asked Chrissy
“just a glass of water, please” she answered
Gareth nodded, grabbing two bottles of water out of the fridge; sitting one down on the table, in front of her; before sitting down himself.
”still need to get some actual dishes, so i’ve got bottles in the meantime” Gareth explained
”its fine, this is great” Chrissy said, smiling timidly
She opened her’s, taking a sip of the ice cold water; Gareth did the same.
“You play the drums, right?” Chrissy asked
”Used to, i haven’t picked up a drumstick in years” Gareth replied
"That's too bad" Chrissy said
"I didn't really see the point anymore" Gareth replied
A moment later, Gareth asked, "so, you met Eddie like...junior year, I'm guessing?"
"middle school actually, the talent show" Chrissy answered
"Oh gosh, that was long ago, I sort of forgot about that; Eddie and I had formed the band not long before." Gareth said, reminicising
"It was long ago, life seemed a lot less complicated back then" Chrissy said
"Yeah, you can say that again" Gareth replied
"What was your thing in high school, what did you enjoy?" Gareth asked
"I was a cheerleader, but the longer I was the less I enjoyed it" Chrissy answered
"Oh yeah?" Gareth asked, with curiosity
"Yeah, it became more my mom pushing me to continue it; cheerleading and everything that comes with it. It's not all it's cracked up to be, that's for damn sure." Chrissy said, in an exhausted tone of voice.
Gareth could sense her uneasiness about it; and thought of how to attempt to lighten the mood, in his own way
"That explains why I haven't met you until now" he said
"Why is that?" Chrissy asked, momentarily distracted from her own thoughts
"I hated gym class, no way I was willingly going in there" he said, with a funny expression
Chrissy let out a half laugh/half cry; Gareth carefully studied her facial expressions, from across the small table
Gareth was about to say something, when Chrissy spoke again
"You don't happen to have anything stronger than water, do you?" she asked
'No sorry, I don't keep any alcohol in the apartment" he answered
"Oh right, because of your son" Chrissy said, nodding in understanding
”Yeah, that and I quit drinking all together” Gareth said, not wanting to speak further about the subject.
”Good for you” Chrissy said, smiling
”Yeah, thanks” Gareth replied
Chrissy glanced in the direction of the hallway; half expecting Edmund to wander into the front room.
”I put him to bed a while ago” Gareth stated
Chrissy nodded, and then said, “If it’s alright to ask, where is Edmund’s mom?”
”She left after he was born, didn't want anything to do with either of us anymore" Gareth replied
"Oh Gareth, I'm so sorry" she said, automatically reaching out to touch his hand; placing her hand over his.
"Thank you" Gareth said, glancing down at her hand
"Sorry, I uh.." Chrissy said, a little nervously
She noticed his slightly chipped black nail polish, as she started to pull her hand away.
"No it's okay, I don't mind" Gareth said, smiling at her; Chrissy smiling back
A little while later, Chrissy said "I've got to go, it was good talking with you"
"Oh okay, it was good talking with you too, it really was" Gareth replied
Chrissy was standing up from the table, when Gareth spoke again
"Can i like, can I give you a hug, is that weird?" he asked
"No, not at all" Chrissy said
Gareth smiled and wrapped his arms around Chrissy in a hug, making sure not to linger too long; he didn't want to be awkward. Chrissy gave him a gentle squeeze before they separated.
She reached the door and said, "Goodnight Gareth"
"Goodnight Chrissy" Gareth replied
Chapter 3: A Chance Encounter
Summary:
Gareth and Edmund end up running into Chrissy at the grocery store.
Chapter Text
The next day, Gareth and Edmund went out to get some groceries and essentials for the apartment.
He promised Edmund that if he was good; they could stop by a toy store on the way home.
Although Gareth was sure he would be; Edmund was usually pretty well behaved.
They arrived at the grocery store and Gareth grabbed a shopping cart from the corral.
”Alright buddy, up you go” he said to Edmund; lifting him up and seating him in the child seat.
Edmund watched as he buckled the little seatbelt, swinging his legs.
They went through the produce section first, and Edmund made a disgusted face as Gareth bagged some broccoli.
”You only have to eat a little bit with your dinner” Gareth said
Edmund pouted and Gareth ruffled his curls lovingly
After filling the base of the cart with various items; Gareth and Edmund headed down the canned food aisle.
Edmund spotted Chrissy further down the aisle, before Gareth did
”It’s her” he said tugging the sleeve of Gareth’s long sleeve shirt.
“Huh?” Gareth asked, bending over to put a few cans in the cart
”Chrissy dadda, it’s Chrissy” Edmund said, excitedly pointing at her
”So it is” Gareth replied, as he looked up; Edmund grinned proudly at being the first to spot her
”Go talk to her, dadda” Edmund said, continuing to point in her direction; as the cart started moving again.
”Alright, alright, stop pointing” Gareth said, pushing his arm down
Chrissy looked up from the soup can label she was reading over, when they approached her.
”Hey, you” Gareth said, greeting her with a friendly little wave
”Oh, hi” Chrissy said, in a surprised tone; hurriedly sitting the can of soup back on the shelf. Gareth watch her curiously as she did.
”Hi, Chrissy” Edmund said, excitedly
”Well, look who’s not shy anymore” Gareth said to him
Edmund was quick to give him a look of annoyance, like Gareth had with Eddie; when the taller man teased him. Edmund really was his father’s son.
”Ahh, dadda!” Edmund exclaimed, as Gareth ruffled his hair; chuckling at his reaction.
Chrissy let out a small laugh, as she watched their interaction
"How's your day going?" Gareth asked Chrissy, a moment later
"Good, thank you" Chrissy replied sweetly, smiling at him
"I'm glad to hear that" he said, smiling a little shyly; he started getting easily jittered around the former cheerleader; this was definently a new feeling, when had that started.
Chrissy watched with interest, as he paused momentarily; before saying, "were grabbing some things for the apartment, I may surprise you and have some actual glasses next time you come over".
"Next time" Chrissy repeated, smiling to herself
Gareth caught her smile and said, "of course"
They went to the homewares section of the store, and Gareth thought about Chrissy while picking out some cups, bowls, and plates; making sure to get some silverware as well.
Edmund spotted some kid plastic plates with dinosaurs on them, as Gareth grabbed a few sippy cups for him.
"I like those ones, Daddy" Edmund said, happily
"Great choice, buddy" Gareth replied, smiling at him and grabbing a few of them
"Alright, just need to grab a few more things, then we can go to the store" Gareth said
Edmund let out a little squeal of excitement, grinning up at his dad
After leaving the grocery store, Gareth drove the ten minutes to the nearest toy store. Edmund was swinging his feet with excitement; Gareth smiled at him from the rear view mirror.
They pulled up in front of the store, finding a parking spot near the door
"Thank you, Dadda" Edmund said, in a sweet little voice
"You're welcome, buddy" Gareth replied
He closed the passenger door and walked around to Edmund's side; getting him out of the car seat. Gareth picked him up in a hug, as Edmund stretched his arms out.
"My good boy" Gareth said, kissing him on the top of the head, before setting him down
"Alright, hold my hand until we get inside" Gareth told Edmund; and he grabbed his hand
When they made it inside, Edmund ran over to a section with musical toys that made sounds; Gareth ran over to catch up with him.
Gareth let out a shaky breath when he saw what Edmund had found; wrapping his arms around his torso, as Edmund started looking through them.
"You okay, Dadda?" he asked, peering up at Gareth; with a concerned expression on his face
"Uh..yeah" Garth said, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible
"You don't look okay" Edmund said, shrugging his small shoulders; then turned back to the toys.
Edmund decided on a set of toy drums, that fit inside each other
"I like this one, Dadda" Edmund said, excitedly
"You sure that's the toy you want?" Gareth asked, hoping he might change his mind
"Yep, this one looks the most fun" Edmund answered
"Okay, lets get heading home" Gareth said, his voice cracking; *christ, couldn't he keep it together until they got out of the store* he thought to himself.
Edmund gripped his hand, giving it a small squeeze; and Gareth nearly lost it at that
After paying, they made it out of the store and Gareth got Edmund buckled in his car seat; sitting the toy bag on the space beside his son.
Gareth got in the drivers side, closing the door; before the dam of emotions broke through; he couldn't hold it in anymore.
He cried harder than he had in a long while, crossing his arms over the steering wheel; his head leaning forward onto them; broken, hoarse sobs racking through his chest.
Edmunds bottom lip trembled, as he watched Gareth from the back seat
"Dadda, please don't cry" he said, his eyes watering with worry
Gareth tried to think of one of the last times he had felt okay, and he thought of Jeff almost right away
He sniffled and turned around in his seat, looking at Edmund with red rimmed eyes
"Dadda?" Edmund said, sadly
"Hey buddy" Gareth said, his throat hoarse from crying; "We're gonna make a stop on the way home, go see Jeff, okay?"
"Okay Dadda, I like Uncle Jeff" Edmund said softly
Chapter 4: Boys Night
Summary:
Gareth goes to Jeff's apartment after his upsetting experience at the toy store
Chapter Text
They arrived at Jeff's apartment, Gareth raised a shaky hand, knocking on the door.
"coming" he heard Jeff say, shortly before the door opened; he had a slight look of surprise on his face.
"Gareth, Edmund..what are you up to?" Jeff asked
"Dadda's sad" Edmund said, as Gareth looked at Jeff with red rimmed eyes
"Oh no, come on in you two" Jeff said, in a sympathetic tone
They walked inside and Jeff closed the door behind him
"You okay, Gare?" Jeff asked
Gareth shook his head, tears welling up in his eyes again
"Oh man" Jeff said, sadly "Would you like to go talk in my room?" he asked
"Yes, but I don't want Edmund to hear; I don't want to make him anymore upset then he is." Gareth said
Jeff nodded in understandment, then said to Edmund, "How about I put on some cartoons for you".
"okay" Edmund said, in a soft voice, "But, where is Dadda going?"
"We're just going to go talk for a while, we'll be right down the hall" Jeff told him
Edmund nodded in reply, with a lost look in his eyes
"It's gonna be okay, buddy" Gareth said
"ok Dadda" Edmund said
after Jeff found a channel with Sesame Street on, he and Gareth went down the hall to Jeff's room.
Gareth sat next to Jeff on the end of the bed, his breath shaky again
Jeff put his hand on Gareth's shoulder, in an attempt to comfort the shorter man
"what happened?' Jeff asked
"I took Edmund to the toy store and..damnit, we were having such a good afternoon before that. Edmund discovered the part of the store with music toys and.." Gareth got out, starting to cry.
"He found some toy drums and I couldn't handle it, I hoped he would change his mind. Damnit, i couldn't even keep it together..and then; I just lost it in the car, and I'm sure I frightened Edmund.
Why the hell can't I deal with a toy, its a damn toy..he's gotta be so confused right now..I never wanted him to see me going through something like this. I try so hard to be a good Dad for him." Gareth finished, before breaking out in a sob.
"oh Gare, I'm so sorry" Jeff said, wrapping his arm around the shorter man
"It's just not a part of my life anymore, playing drums and all that; it used to make me so happy" Gareth said
"I know buddy, I know; it's okay to be upset, its not just about the toy" Jeff said, nodding; he squeezed Gareth's shoulder gently.
Gareth nodded in understandment, somehow he needed to hear that; to know it was okay to just lose it sometimes.
A moment later, Jeff spoke again "you are a great dad Gareth, and you have a beautiful son that adores the heck out of you. You're doing much better than you think; you're sober now, you take such good care of Edmund. It's gonna be okay Gare".
Gareth's eyes welled up with tears, but this time it was happy ones; "thank you Jeff, i appreciate that" Gareth said, sniffling.
"Love you, man" Jeff said, hugging him
"Love you, too" Gareth replied
Just then, they heard a light knock on the door; Jeff got up from the bed, walking over and opening it.
"Uncle Jeff, can I have a snack?" Edmund asked
"Of course, kiddo, come to the kitchen with me and you can pick something" Jeff answered
"I'll be right back" Jeff told Gareth, who nodded in understandment
After getting Edmund settled with a snack and drink; Jeff rejoined Gareth down the hallway.
When Jeff sat down on the bed, Gareth said, "Thank you for helping me calm down, I'm feeling better".
"I'm so glad to hear that, anytime Gare" Jeff replied
They went back out to the front room and Gareth joined Edmund on the couch.
"hey, Buddy" Gareth said
"hi, Dadda, are you better?" Edmund asked, looking at him hopefully
"I'm much better" Gareth said, smiling, and scooted Edmund onto his lap; holding him in his arms.
Edmund nodded, then said, "When you're sad, it makes me sad"
"I'm sorry, buddy, I love you" Gareth said
"I love you too, Dadda" Edmund replied
Gareth wrapped his arms around Edmund in a hug; letting out the breath that he hadn't realized he was holding in.
Gareth kissed the top of Edmund's curls, then said, "my sweet, beautiful boy"
Edmund cuddled even closer to Gareth, nuzzling his head against Gareth's chest.
A happy tear rolled down Gareth’s cheek, and Jeff watched their interactions, smiling.
It got to the part of Sesame Street when they tell the letter of the day.
”Dadda, it’s E! Like our names!” Edmund said, excitedly
Gareth looked at the television screen, smiling, "so it is, that's really cool" he said
Edmund nodded happily, smiling as well
It got later and Edmund was just about ready for his dinner; Jeff came into the front room
"Hey, how about you two spend the night? We can order pizza, have some ice cream; Dan could probably come, it would be great" Jeff said
Edmund licked his lips hungrily, thinking about pizza and ice cream; "can we Dadda?" he asked, excitedly
"You're sure we're not intruding?" Gareth asked
"Not at all, I'd love to have you stay" Jeff answered
"Alright, I don't need to ask Edmund what he thinks about staying" Gareth said, chuckling; then ruffled his son's curls
Edmund didn't even object that time, he had missed goofing around with his dad the last little while
Gareth brought in a bag of cold items from the car, to keep in Jeff's fridge. Jeff called Dan who was looking forward to coming over; he told Jeff that he would pick up pizzas and fixings for ice cream sundaes on his way over.
Jeff and Gareth covered the front room floor with a few pads, plenty of blankets and pillows; perfect for a movie night; while they waited for Dan to arrive.
Edmund spread out on them, make himself comfortable; "this is fun, Dadda" he said; his curls all disheveled and an adorable grin on his face.
"I'm glad you're having fun, buddy" Gareth said, smiling and laid down next to him
"Hmm, I think I'll talk a nap right here" Gareth joked with him, closing his eyes
"Wake up Dadda, wake up" Edmund said, flopping onto Gareth's stomach
Gareth made an "oof" sound, then opened his eyes and tickled Edmund's sides; making him squeal with surprise and laugh; eventually Gareth stopped and laughed as well.
A while later Dan arrived with the pizza, ice cream, and sundae fixings; shivering a little as he walked in; a light rain had started. Jeff took the pizza box from him, putting it on the table. Edmund looked over from the living room, with a big smile on his face.
"Uncle Dan!" he exclaimed, getting up to run over to him
"Let him sit the stuff down, buddy" Gareth called after him, letting out a chuckle
"Hey, little man!" Dan exclaimed, with just as much enthusiasm; sitting the few bags down
Edmund reached him and Dan picked him up in a hug; with a happy grin on his face
They stayed like that for a moment, then Dan put him down
"I missed you, Uncle Dan" Edmund said, looking up at him
"I missed you too, Squirt" Dan replied, smiling down at him
Gareth joined them all near the kitchen
"Hey, man" Dan greeted him, giving him a fist bump
"Hey" Gareth replied, returning the fist bump
"You look good, Gare Bear" Dan said, ruffling his curls lightly
"Ughh, not again" Gareth playfully, complained
Edmund giggled as Dan teased Gareth
Gareth reached down, tickling Edmund again; "what are you laughing at?" he teased, as Edmund squealed with surprise
Jeff and Dan started laughing, watching the two of them
After enjoying pizza, the guys pulled out all the sundae fixings, sitting them on Jeff's kitchen table; both chocolate and vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, hot fudge, caramel, whipped cream, even cherries. Edmund looked over everything, with wide eyes and excitement on his face.
Gareth grabbed a towel to use as a bib for Edmund, knowing that he was sure to spill on himself at some point. They let Jeff fix his sundae first and he was hosting the impromptu boys night, Dan next, then Gareth and Edmund; who couldn't contain his excitement anymore.
"Alright buddy, what kind of ice cream?" Gareth asked Edmund
"Chocolate!" he exclaimed, immediately
Gareth smiled as he scooped ice cream into a bowl
"Caramel, hot fudge, whipped cream?" each item that Gareth asked if he wanted; Edmund nodded enthusiastically in reply; with a wide grin on his face
Gareth added sprinkles last, shaking a bit onto the top of Edmund's sundae
"More Dadda, More" Edmund instructed him, as he watched
"Okay, but not too much" Gareth said, chuckling
Edmund started digging into his sundae the moment he was sat down in one of the chairs; a phone book underneath him, so he would be tall enough to see over the edge of the table. Soon the guys joined Edmund and Gareth around the kitchen table.
"This is real good" Edmund sputtered out, with chocolate ice cream dripping down his chin; making them all laugh
Gareth grabbed a wet paper towel, cleaning off his chin
Despite having a bib on, Edmund was definitely ready for a bath by the time everyone finished enjoying their dessert's.
"Alright buddy, lets get you in the bath before starting a movie" Gareth said, helping Edmund down from his chair.
"There's a few fresh towels in the bathroom" Jeff told Gareth
"Alright great, we'll be back" Gareth replied
Edmund waved at Jeff and Dan, with a chocolatey hand; before he and Gareth disappeared down the hallway.
Jeff lent Gareth a pair of sweatpants to wear to bed and a big t shirt that Edmund could wear; it practically drowned him, but it would keep him warm.
Edmund went back out to the front room, Jeff's t-shirt reaching past his knees; followed by Gareth, who was well ready to lounge and relax.
Gareth got comfortable against two of the pillows, Edmund cuddled up next to his side; and smiled as "Never Ending Story" started playing on the television. Gareth held him close
The guys passed around a bowl full of popcorn, but Edmund was full from his ice cream sundae; he ended up falling asleep about a third of the way through the movie.
Chapter 5: Reconnecting Once Again
Summary:
Gareth and Edmund return home
Chapter Text
Gareth and Edmund returned home the next morning, walking up the stairs to their apartment; Gareth carrying a few bags of groceries and Edmund carrying his new toy from the day before.
Chrissy had her front door partly opened when they reached the top of the stairs; and started walking down the hall.
"Hey you two, just getting in?" she asked, in a friendly tone
"Yeah, stayed at a friend of mine's last night" Gareth answered
Edmund took a curious glance inside the door opening, and Chrissy smiled at him
"That's fun" Chrissy said
"Yeah, good to see them" Gareth replied, not sure if he was quite ready to open up about what had happened the day before.
Just then, Edmund chimed in, "Dadda got me a new toy" he said; proudly holding up the box containing his little drum set.
Chrissy looked at the box in Edmund's hands and then over at Gareth; noticing the melancholy look on his face
"Oh, how nice" Chrissy told Edmund
Her and Gareth made eye contact with each other; she could see that he felt a bit overwhelmed, and gave him a sympathetic look.
"Well, were gonna head inside, get these groceries put in the fridge" Gareth said his head nodding towards their front door "It's good to see you again, Chrissy"
"It's good to see you too" Chrissy replied, then smiled as Edmund gave her a little wave; waving back in return
Chrissy watched as they walked away, then went back into her apartment
Gareth and Edmund entered the apartment; Gareth heading to the kitchen to put the groceries away and Edmund moving to the living room with the toy drums box in his hands.
After putting some items in the fridge, Gareth heard Edmund call for him
"Dadda, will you help me open my toy?" Edmund asked, tugging at the top flap of the cardboard box
"Yeah Buddy, in just a minute" Gareth answered
A few minutes later, Gareth had finished putting the groceries away and joined Edmund in the living room; who smiled excitedly as he sat down next to him.
"Open it, Dadda! open it!" Edmund exclaimed, as Gareth pulled the box over; cutting away the tape with a butter knife.
Gareth got the box opened and emptied out the contents onto the carpet; Edmund peered excitedly over his shoulder as he did.
The drumsticks were at the top of the box, Gareth handed them to Edmund after taking them out of the plastic wrap; who looked at them curiously
"What do I do with these?" Edmund asked, as Gareth emptied the rest of the box
"That's what you use to play them, buddy" Gareth answered
"ohhh" Edmund said, making Gareth smile
Gareth got the set of three drums out of the box and sat them in front of Edmund; he showed Edmund how to tap with he drumsticks, who watched Gareth with fascination.
"Alright, now you try" Gareth said, handing the drumsticks back to him; with an encouraging smile
Edmund started to tap on them, like Gareth had
"Like that, Dadda?" he asked, after a moment
"Yeah buddy, just like that" Gareth said, and Edmund grinned
After playing for a while, it was time for lunch
"Can we play a while more, please?" Edmund asked, with pleading eyes
"Later buddy, aren't you hungry?" Gareth replied
"Yes, but.." Edmund said
"You're just like me when I was your age, always wanting to play more" Gareth said, chuckling
He helped Edmund up from the floor and they walked over to the kitchen
"You played the drums like me?" Edmund asked, with an excited gasp
"I did" Gareth answered
Edmund thought to himself for a few seconds, his forehead scrunched in concentration; then asked, "but, where are your drums?" peering up at Gareth.
Gareth took a small breath, then answered, "They're at grandma's house, in the basement"
"Can, we go see them?" Edmund asked, wrapping his hand around Gareth's fingers
"Sometime, but for now, lets get you something to eat" he replied
"ok, Dadda" Edmund said
Gareth enjoyed having a relaxing day at home with Edmund; after all the emotions he had gone through the day before.
That night, the two of them sat on the couch watching the last of a movie together; Edmund holding a sippy cup in both hands, enjoying chocolate milk.
Sitting his cup back down on the coffee table, he let out a small yawn; rubbing his eyes with his palms
"You ready for bed, buddy?" Gareth asked
Edmund nodded in reply, letting out a second yawn
Gareth grabbed the remote, turning off the television; then picked up Edmund, who was wrapped up in his light blue blankie. Gareth cupped the back of Edmunds head with his other hand, as Edmund rested his head against the crook of Gareth's shoulder.
Edmunds eyes started to get heavy, they drooped closed as he got comfortable in Gareth's arms. Edmund had always been a good sleeper, even when he was a newborn.
Gareth got his son tucked into bed, smiling fondly as he wrapped his arms around the dark brown teddy bear that Gareth's mom had gave him for his first birthday. Edmund rolled on his side, sighing softly in his sleep; Gareth leaned down brushing a few curls aside, before gently kissing Edmund on his forehead.
"Goodnight buddy, love you" Gareth whispered, before leaving Edmund's room
Around three in the morning it started to rain outside, accompanied by rolling thunder. Edmund stirred in his sleep, his eyes opening with a startle a moment later; there was light through his window blinds, as another thunderbolt came.
He got out of bed, running down the hallway to Gareth's room; as he carried his teddy bear along with him, by the arm. When he reached his dad's bedroom, he pushed the door open a little wider; rushing to the side of the bed.
"Dadda! Dadda, wake up!" he exclaimed, tugging on the sleeve of Gareth's long sleeve shirt
"hmm.." Gareth muttered in his sleep, before opening his eyes and looking over the side of the bed at Edmund
"What's wrong, buddy" Gareth asked in a sleepy voice, turning on the lamp; on the nightstand
Just then, a particularly loud thunderbolt sounded out; causing Gareth to jump in surprise and Edmund to squeal in fright
"Oh no, no wonder you're awake" Gareth said, making room for Edmund and lifting him up on the bed
"Dadda, I'm scared" Edmund said, whimpering and burying his head against Gareth's chest
"I got you, buddy, you're safe here" Gareth replied, holding him close and stroking Edmund's curls comfortingly
A moment later, Gareth suggested they put on another movie to distract themselves from the storm; he filled Edmunds sippy cup with some warm milk to calm him
Edmunds blue eyes lit up as Care Bears appeared on the television screen
"I like this one, dadda" he said, with a grin
"I'm glad" Gareth said, smiling at Edmund; who settled his head back against one of the pillows
It wasn't long until Edmund fell asleep and the thunder had calmed down quite a bit; Gareth glanced at his son for a few seconds with a loving smile, who was sleeping soundly next to him.
After turning off the television, Gareth listened to the pattering of rain outside; getting lost in his own thoughts like he often did late at night, when the apartment was quiet.
He liked Chrissy a lot, he wanted to see more of her; he wondered if she thought as much about him as he did about her. Would she feel the same way, or was she being polite because they were neighbors and he was Eddie's best friend.
Eventually his eyes growing tired, he stretched his arm over Edmund; turning off the bedside lamp and soon falling asleep.
The next morning, Edmund was sitting at the table enjoying some of his favorite cereal; as Gareth was making some toast in the kitchen, as he looked over the newspaper.
A moment later, Gareth looked up from the paper as the doorbell rang; crossing the room and opening the door to reveal Chrissy holding a few envelopes in her hand; he was surprised to see her, and tried to hide the fact that his cheeks were blushing, at the thought of her seeing him in his pajamas.
"Hey Chrissy, uh..whats up?" Gareth asked
"Some of your mail got put into my box by accident" Chrissy answered
"Oh, well thank you" Gareth said, in a grateful tone
"You bet" Chrissy replied, smiling as she handed him the mail
"So about that storm last night, pretty uh..rainy right?" Gareth said, rocking on his heels nervously
"Oh..was it? I slept through it" Chrissy replied
*Of course she slept through it, like most people would; was he really discussing the weather? how lame* he thought to himself
"Oh, right, would you like to come in, for a slice of toast and a coffee?" Gareth asked
"I'm actually heading out to go to brunch with my mom" Chrissy said
"Oh okay, cool, cool.." Gareth said, averting his gaze a little to look at her outfit; a pale pink top with lacy sleeves that reached partway down her arms, and an expensive looking pair of dark wash blue jeans.
"Which would explain why you're dressed up, you look great by the way; I mean you always look great, but" Gareth stuttered
Chrissy giggled before saying, "you're sweet, Gare"
Gareth smiled nervously
"I'm free for dinner though" Chrissy said, leaning forward to kiss his cheek
Gareth's heart practically fluttered from the touch
"Great! dinner at seven then?" Gareth asked, enthusiastically
"seven's perfect, see you tonight" Chrissy said
"see you tonight" Gareth replied
Chapter 6: Dinner At Gareth's
Summary:
Chrissy joins Gareth and Edmund for dinner
Chapter Text
Chrissy knocked on the door a few minutes before seven that night; just as Gareth was sitting a bowl of salad mix on the table.
He moved to answer the door and Edmund walked right along side him; Gareth glanced down at him, smiling.
"Hey Chrissy, welcome" Gareth said warmly, after opening the door
"Thank you, I thought I would bring some sparkling cider, since I invited myself to dinner" she said, with a shy little shrug of the shoulders "Don't worry, its non- alcoholic" she added, holding bottle up.
"Well great, I've never had sparkling cider" Gareth said, smiling at her
"We're having spaghetti!" Edmund told Chrissy, with excitement
"Sounds wonderful" Chrissy replied, smiling down at Edmund
Chrissy removed her shoes and jacket, then joined Gareth in the kitchen
"Can I do anything to help?" she asked
"Could you sit this tray of garlic bread on the table?" Gareth asked
"Sure" Chrissy replied, smiling at him
"Thanks, I'll be right there with the spaghetti" Gareth said, smiling back at her
The three of them sat down at the table, Gareth and Chrissy seated on either side of Edmund.
Things felt whole again with the three of them sitting together, Gareth could get used to that feeling; he thought to himself.
He smiled while looking at Chrissy; who blushed a little when she noticed him looking.
Gareth made up Edmunds plate, sitting it down in front of him; then passed the spaghetti and salad to Chrissy. She thanked him and he gave her a warm smile in return.
Chrissy helped herself to a light serving of spaghetti, having more salad than the other. Gareth watched her with curiosity, but decided not to say anything quite yet; maybe she was still full from brunch, although it was quite a while ago.
She passed the two dishes back to him, and he filled up his own plate; dropping the thought for now.
Edmund was thoroughly enjoying his dinner; he loved the meatballs, and would hold up a strand of spaghetti at a time, enjoying slurping it into his mouth; his bib catching most of the sauce that happened to drip. Gareth very rarely corrected him, as long as Edmund was enjoying eating his food; he was happy.
Chrissy glanced over at Edmund, wishing she could just enjoy eating as easily as he did; it had been good to spend the afternoon with her mom, but it stopped being fun when she started to critique nearly everything she put onto her plate.
She smiled sadly to herself, pushing a couple meatballs aside with her fork; it didn't go unnoticed by Gareth.
He glanced across the table feeling sad for her; was she not feeling well?, had brunch been rough with her mom?; It sounded like it might be the later. Especially after how she had told him a bit about her mom, in reference to Chrissy's cheerleading; the first night they had a conversation together.
Gareth's mom had told him he was a very empathetic person, since he was a kid; he didn't know how true that was, mostly he was just happy to help others if he could.
When Chrissy was quick to turn down any seconds on dinner; Gareth worried that his suspicions might be true.
The two of them were standing at the kitchen counter; she had insisted on drying the dinner dishes, Gareth washing them; although he told her she didn't need to.
"Chrissy?" Gareth said, getting her attention
"Hmm?" Chrissy replied
"Are you feeling alright? I noticed you didn't eat much" Gareth asked, hoping he wouldn't offend her
"I'm...I'm alright" she answered, in a soft voice; looking down at the plate she was currently drying with a dish towel.
"You sure?" Gareth asked
Chrissy sniffled sadly in reply
"Chrissy, please look at me" Gareth said, in as gentle a tone as possible
There was a few seconds of silence, and then she looked at him; her eyes slightly red
"What's the matter?" Gareth asked, his blue eyes full of concern
"Brunch didn't so great with my mom..I'm not sure I want to see much more of her for a while" Chrissy told him sadly.
"I'm very sorry to hear that" Gareth said
"Thank you, Gare" Chrissy replied
They finished the dishes ten minutes later and Chrissy turned to Gareth again.
”What’s your mom like, do you have a good relationship with her?” she asked
”Absolutely, she’s one of my best friends and an amazing grandma to Edmund. You would like her a lot, she’s really great.” Gareth answered.
”Thats wonderful Gareth, I’m happy for you” Chrissy told him.
Gareth gave her a little smile in return, nodding
”I’m relieved that she worries about me a lot less now” Gareth said, his blue eyes watering a little.
Chrissy gave him a questioning look in reply
”A story for another time” Gareth said
Chrissy gave him a small nod and placed her hand over his, on the counter top.
It got a little later, Chrissy and Gareth got up from where they were sitting on the couch.
"I better give Edmund a bath and get him in bed; you're totally welcome to hang out if you want" Gareth told her.
"No, no..I don't want to intrude, I'm gonna head back to my apartment" Chrissy replied.
"Okay, well it was really good to see you again, thanks for coming" Gareth said
"Thanks for having me over, its always good to see you and Edmund" Chrissy replied
Gareth smiled and leaned in, giving Chrissy a kiss on the cheek; that caused her to blush.
"What was that for?" Chrissy asked sweetly, with a curious expression
"It just seemed appropriate somehow" Gareth answered, blushing a little in return; tucking his hands into the pockets of the faded jeans he was wearing; not sure what to do with them at the moment.
"I think its sweet" Chrissy said, smiling at him; tucking a few stray curls behind his ear
Gareth instantly felt warm at the feeling of her fingers brushing against his jaw bone; before moving her hand away.
"You do?" Gareth asked, with a hint of excitement, that he failed to hide
"Mmm hmm" Chrissy replied, kissing Gareth's cheek in return
She smiled and said, "Goodnight Gareth, sleep well"
"Yeah thanks, you too" Gareth replied, with a shy smile, as his cheek grew visibly warm; making Chrissy giggle
*It was the cutest giggle he had ever heard, he could make her laugh more often; if it meant he got to hear that* Gareth thought to himself for a moment; as Chrissy put her shoes on and grabbed her jacket.
He felt his cheek still warm as he watched her open the door; she turned and gave him a little wink before leaving
He went into the restroom, starting a bath for Edmund with his favorite bubble bath
Gareth caught a sight of himself in the mirror, while moving to grab the hooded towel that was hanging on the hook; on the back of the door. There was a faint pink lipstick mark on his one cheek, that he couldn't bring himself to wipe off at the moment.
Gareth didn't realize that Edmund had walked out of his room, where he had been playing with his drum set; until he turned to see him watching Gareth from the hallway, with curiosity.
"Your cheek is red, Dadda; do you have a fever?" Edmund asked, carefully observing him
"No, I'm..Dadda is fine; are you ready for your bath, buddy?" Gareth asked
Edmund nodded in reply, looking up at him
Gareth smiled to himself, before turning to grab Edmund's towel
Chapter 8: Feeling Something More
Summary:
Chrissy spends some more time with Gareth; and has a sleepover with a friend
Chapter Text
Helping Edmund change into his pajamas that night; Gareth gently put the hellfire shirt on a hanger, putting it away in his son's closet.
Gareth walked over to the bed, bending down to kiss Edmund's forehead; like he did every night.
Goodnight Buddy, love you" Gareth told Edmund
"Love you too, Dadda" Edmund replied; rolling on his side, and closing his eyes
Gareth pulled the covers up tucking them over Edmund shoulder, who immediately snuggled Into them; making Garerth smile.
He switched off Edmund's bedside lamp, then left the room; quietly closing the door behind him.
Making his way down the hall, to the front room; Gareth sat down on the couch, turning on the television.
He started watching the nine o'clock news; becoming bored with it ten minutes later
Changing the channel to some re-run of a sitcom he wasn't familiar with; Gareth turned the television off with a sigh, sitting the remote down on the small coffee table.
He was about ready to go to his room for the night; when there was a knock on the front door.
Gareth got up from the couch; wondering who would be coming by at that time of night.
He unlocked the door to reveal Chrissy standing there; with a sheepish expression on her face.
"Chrissy, what are you..?" Gareth started to say
Before she interrupted him, "I forgot my key, and wondered if I could come inside while I wait for the landlord to come with another. A little silly, I know" she finished, with a shrug.
"Not at all, come on in" Gareth replied, standing aside so she could enter the apartment
"Thank you" Chrissy said, in a soft voice; as Gareth closed the door behind her
They entered the front room, and Gareth turned to Chrissy; "would you like something to drink?" he asked
"Just a glass of water, please" Chrissy answered
"You got it, make yourself at home" Gareth told her; gesturing towards the couch
A moment later, Gareth rejoined Chrissy in the front room; carrying two glasses of water
He sat one down in front of Chrissy, on the coffee table
"Such a gentleman" Chrissy said, sweetly; making Gareth blush
A few seconds later, Gareth felt a twinge of pain go through his left hand; as he sat down his own glass, nearly making him spill it.
He immediately let out a gasp of pain, alarming Chrissy
She got right up from the couch, helping Gareth sit down
"Your hand, what happened?" Chrissy asked, with concern; very gently holding his hand in her own.
Gareth's hand was shaking a little; and she lightly stroked the back of his hand, with her fingers.
"This asshole, Jason Carver, fucked up my hand junior year; it's never been the same since. I try not to think about that day" Gareth said, in a tired voice
Chrissy froze at his words, she remembered that day all too well; trying to convince Jason that Eddie hadn't hurt her, would never hurt her.
"It was all over something about his girlfriend; who would date that douche bag?" Gareth scoffed
"Me, I did..I thought most people from school knew" Chrissy said
Gareth looked so disappointed at that revelation; and honestly she didn't blame him
"I'm nothing like most people, I'm not some model student with good grades; I don't have the picture perfect family, I screwed up" Gareth said, with a downhearted chuckle
"Don't say that.." Chrissy replied
"Daddy! Daddy!" Edmund shouted from his bedroom; breaking the conversation
Gareth quickly got up, without a word; leaving Chrissy alone in the front room
Chrissy glanced around the front room, not sure what to do with herself; she heard a small commotion from the next room.
She noticed a group of framed photos on one wall of the room; there were two with Gareth and Edmund; one when Edmund was a newborn and another that looked pretty recent. There was another photo of a woman with long wavy hair; who had almost the same hair color as Gareth; she had to be his mom, she thought to herself.
Chrissy had a sad smile on her face, when she noticed an old picture of Gareth and Eddie from middle school; remembering the conversation her and Eddie had in the woods, past the football field.
Chrissy was considering just letting herself out of the apartment; when Gareth re-emerged into the front room.
"Poor kid had a scary dream, I got him back to sleep though" Gareth explained, sitting down next to Chrissy.
Chrissy gave a silent nod, then said "I should probably leave...I'm sorry Gareth" starting to get up from the couch.
"no..don't be" Gareth replied
Chrissy sighed, getting up from the couch, without another word
"I'll see you around, I guess" Chrissy said, as Gareth started walking over to her
"Chrissy, just wait.." Gareth started to say; but she was too quick for him, opening the door and shutting it behind her.
"Stupid...stupid..." Gareth muttered, bringing his palm to his forehead in frustration
He locked the door then crossed the front room, turning off the light; before heading down the hallway to his bedroom
Gareth got ready for bed, feeling like a total schmuck; and combed his fingers through his curly hair, with a sigh.
He took off his jeans, leaving him in a dark pair of boxers; he didn't care to change into pajama bottoms
The next day, late in the afternoon; Gareth was heading up the stairs, after grabbing his mail; when he looked up to see Chrissy coming down the stairs, with a Hawkins High duffle bag in hand. He swore under his breath, when she noticed him too
"Chrissy.." Gareth said, in a gruff voice; nodding his head towards her
"Hi, Gareth" she replied, eyeing him hesitantly
She walked a few more steps down, then turned back
"I really 'am sorry, Gareth..about last night
Gareth shrugged, "it's just facts, my dad left when I was a kid; I've done a lot of shit I'm not proud of"
Chrissy gave him a sad look, then said "Let me make up for it, I'm staying at a friends house tonight; but want to have you and Edmund over for dinner tomorrow night."
"You really don't have to..." Gareth protested
"I want to" Chrissy replied "I promise, no more high school talk" she added
Gareth let out a sad chuckle, "See you tomorrow night" he said
"See you then" Chrissy replied
Chrissy and her friend Bonnie were sitting on her bed, later that night
"How are you liking your first apartment?" Bonnie asked
"It's been good, its nice to be away from home; have my own place" Chrissy answered
"Definently, you seem happier" Bonnie said; knowing full well what Chrissy's mom had put her through.
"I feel like I'm starting to be, thanks to my new neighbor" Chrissy said; her arms wrapped around a small decorative pillow
"ooh..tell me more" Bonnie said, excitedly; suddenly becoming very intrigued
"He's the same age as me, he has a son; I feel really comfortable around him" Chrissy said; a cozy, warm feeling coming over her.
"ooh..a family man" Bonnie said, nudging her arm; making Chrissy roll her eyes in amusement
"What's his name?" Bonnie asked, pushing on
"His name is Gareth, he's best friend's with Eddie actually..." Chrissy said, before Bonnie cut her off mid-sentence.
"Eddie the freak?!" Bonnie exclaimed
"Don't call him that!" Chrissy exclaimed, snapping at her friend
"Sorry...old habits die hard" Bonnie said, quick to apologize
A moment later, Chrissy spoke again "I didn't plan to fall in love with his best friend; it just sort of..happened" she admitted, instantly feeling butterflies saying it out loud for the first time.
Bonnie gave her a knowing look, and Chrissy couldn't hide her smile
