Chapter 1: Accidental Meeting

Chapter Text

Accidental Meeting

"Law, please son, pay attention. It's dangerous around here. And we don't have a lot of information on their kind," his father announced in a low tone. Law, on the other hand, was fascinated by the snake slithering across the ground in front of him.

The six-year-old was always interested in the creatures around him. And snakes were his favourite creature at the time. And they seemed to like him back in turn. Maybe not nearly as much as he did so to them though. Yet, that didn't stop him from interacting with them.

"Son, are you watching closely? You're going to miss them." As soon as that was said, Law lifted his head so he could see the creatures they came out to observe. After all, it was his father's job to record them. And he wanted to be just like him. Law always wanted to become a zoologist.

His eyes widened when he saw the being come, slowly, slithering out from the foliage. He gasped, amazed by it. His father placed a hand on his shoulder, keeping him grounded and from running off to see it up close.

"Do you see her?" his father whispered. "She's beautiful. Their species is amazing. But we need to keep our distance. We're only here to study and record. Not to interact or disturb them." Law nodded, unable to take his gaze away from the being.

What his father had brought him along to study with him were Echidnas. They were half human, half snake people. Of course, some would consider them Gorgons as well from Greek mythology. But they didn't have the ability to turn people to stone. Or, at least, they hadn't been seen doing so. Law learned all of this at a very young age because of his father's profession and his own innate need to be curious.

And he found the species marvelous. Snake people were far different from regular snakes. They could communicate with other animals. But it wasn't confirmed if they could speak any human language. Just with animals. And that they had their own unique dialect. He'd heard two of them speak to one another before.

This wasn't the first sighting of them. Many people have come forward to tell about their encounters with Echidnas. But none of them spoke to them. They would just slither away when confronted. So, it was very unlikely that they were used to people. Yet, his father had begun to study them even before he was born.

"Dad," he started in a low voice. "Do you think there are male ones? I've only ever seen females." He was curious how they reproduced. Out of the dozens of times he'd accompanied his father on his escapades, he never once saw a male. A baby, yes, but never the opposite sex.

"I'm not sure. I don't even know what they use for shelter. I haven't been able to get close enough to find out." Law nodded. "But maybe that will be something new for us to find out today."

He watched his father snap a few photos of the Echidna as she went over to a small pool of water. From the waist up, she appeared to be fully human. Even her skin resembled that of a pale person. But from the hips down, it faded into a light green, scaly tail that mirrored a snake's. Even the underbelly was a light khaki colour.

On her chest was a top made out of large, green leaves to cover only her breasts. Her long, bright blonde hair flowed down her back as she bent over and scooped up some water. He watched her forked tongue dart out of her mouth a few times before she lifted the liquid to her mouth to drink.

It always intrigued him to see their kind do normal things. Law viewed them as ethereal beings. Ones that didn't belong on the earth. And it saddened him at the thought of humans interfering with their habitat. They didn't deserve to be intruded on or made to live in fear of being invaded.

After she got her fill of the water, she slithered off back into the foliage she'd emerged from. "So beautiful and majestic. Your mother will be thrilled to know I got more pictures of them. This one appeared to be different from the last. Maybe there's a whole society of their kind."

As his father spoke, Law's attention was again taken by another snake that made its way over to him before turning to go into a bush. With his interest fixed on the snake, he stood up and followed it. His mind was focused on the snake, nothing else.

He pushed the leaves of plants away as he kept his eyes trained on the scaly being. Law even stayed quiet so he wouldn't bother it. But he wanted to see where it was going. And the snake didn't seem at all aware of him following it. Instead, it just went about its business.

After a while, he saw it disappear into a hole under a tree. He giggled at seeing it go home. "Have a good day, snake friend," he said as he crouched down and lightly patted the trunk of the tree. Then, he stood back up and turned around to observe the area.

That's when it hit him that he'd gone too far. He couldn't see or even hear his father. His head whipped around, trying to figure out where to go. Fear gripped his little heart at realizing he was alone in an unknown area. Something his father had warned him about.

"D-Dad," he called out as tears gathered in his eyes. "DAD!" His small body trembled as he held back his sobs for the time being. There was the possibility that his father was nearby. But his hopes were dashed when he didn't hear an answer at all.

That's when he allowed his tears to spill over and slide down his cheeks. He cried loudly as he dropped down onto the ground. Even snot ran down his nose as he hiccupped and rubbed his eyes. But it did nothing to stop the large tears from escaping his eyes.

"I'm sorry!" he cried out. "I should've listened! I'm sorry, Dad!" For an hour or two, he stayed on the ground, bawling his eyes out. But his father never showed up. And the sun began to set, making him even more frightened.

After a bit longer, he decided to try to find his way back to the tent his father had set up for them. They were spending the night to see if the Echidnas were nocturnal. He was told that it would further help them understand their kind.

With darkness quickly creeping up and enveloping the jungle, every small noise terrified him. Law jumped and jolted every time a twig snapped or there was a rustle of leaves. His eyes darted around as he tried to suck up his tears. Even if he wasn't crying nearly as heavily as before, tears still streamed down his face.

But he was slowly losing his sight, making it damn near impossible for him to continue. And that horrified him even more. And more tears stained his adorable face as he whimpered. He hadn't remembered to bring his flashlight. It was back at the tent because he hadn't known he would need it until later. Now, he wished he had brought it.

"I want Dad," he sobbed out. "I'm sorry. I won't run off again. I learned my lesson." In his little mind, he believed he was being punished for not listening to his dad's warning.

Another hour or two later, it was completely dark, and he couldn't see even a foot in front of him. So, he felt around and found something solid to sit against. Even if it was out in the open, he needed to be able to rest. His small legs ached from walking so much. Even his tears had dried up by then as exhaustion hit him.

I'm sorry, Dad. I didn't listen. I followed the friendly snake. But it was so shiny and cute. I'm really sorry. Please, I've learned my lesson. I won't run off again. I promise. Just... please, come save me. I don't want to be eaten. Please... Dad... With that lost thought, he succumbed to the sweet embrace of sleep. He overexerted himself. And the crying hadn't helped him at all. So, he fell into a peaceful, dreamless sleep.

...

"Hey, are you okay? It's not safe for such a small child to sleep out here." A young, male voice roused him from sleep. Law groaned as he began to regain consciousness. He raised his hands to rub his eyes. "Can you hear me? I think I'm speaking your language properly."

Sleepliy, he opened his eyes but was met with darkness. However, he raised his gaze to see two glowing silver eyes staring down at them. There were slits instead of circular pupils. Law yelped as he tried to back up. But that ended up with his head smacking off the tree he'd fallen asleep against.

He squeezed his eyes shut as pain exploded in his head. His hands shot up to grab the spot that had hit the trunk. "Hey, don't hurt yourself. Where is the man you're normally with? Why are you alone way out here?"

Law opened his eyes and went back to staring at the eyes that never seemed to blink. It both astonished and terrified him. Yet, he understood what the other was saying. And that shocked him a bit more.

"I... I g-got l-lost," he stuttered out. "Th-The... the sn-snake was so pr-pretty. I... I left D-Dad." That's when the tears threatened to fall again. "I'm being p-punished for w-walking off."

"Please, don't cry," the other said, frantically. "I'll... I'll sit here with you until morning. I... I can't take you back, but I can stay with you." Law nodded, taking any kindness he could get.

Then, he was lifted up under his arms before the guy moved around and he was placed on top of what he assumed was his lap. A second later, his eyebrows furrowed as he placed his hands on the other's body to keep his balance.

"What are you wearing?" he asked, moving his hands across the part underneath him. "It's like a snake. Cool."

"Stop touching. You can go back to sleep. There are still a few hours before morning. So, it's better if you rest more before then. And your 'dad' will be less worried if you're well rested." Law nodded as he leaned forward and placed his hands on the man's chest, curling them up between their bodies. "I can't believe he would bring such a small child along with him. He knows it's risky. Things like this are bound to happen. But I'm shocked it took this long for it to occur."

"I wanna be a zoologist like my dad," Law voiced. "I'm learning about Echidnas. They're people with snake tails instead of legs. I love them. They're so pretty. But I've never seen any males. Only females."

"I see. You have a very unique interest. Such an ambitious goal for such a small child." Law chuckled as he slowly began to fall asleep again. The small amount of body heat coming from the man holding him helped lull him into dreamland.

"I want to meet one. I want to tell them how amazing they are. I wish we could be friends. But Dad said it's better not to disturb them." He rubbed the side of his cheek into the man's bare chest. "I just want to study them closer. I really like them. So pretty and cool."

"That can be arranged." But before he could figure out what he meant by that, he lost his battle with the waking world. He fell asleep, dreaming about meeting a snake person who would befriend him. A sweet and childish dream he wished would come true.

...

"You're lighter than you appear. Do your parents not feed you enough? Even if you look healthy, you're so small and weigh practically nothing." A voice awoke him from his dream. Law rubbed his into the object pressed against him. "Are you awake? We're almost there. I can't take you all the way there, but I can get you close enough. I've already gone against the rules by interacting with you. But I have my reason."

Law raised his hands and rubbed his eyes. Light hit him, warming him up. "Is it morning already?" he asked, groggily.

"Yes. And I decided to get you back to your father before he panics even more. I know I said I couldn't, but I know he was distraught when he couldn't find you last night. But don't worry. I took care of you. Nothing came near us." With that, Law moved his hands to grab onto the man's shoulders as he opened his eyes.

They widened in shock when he lifted his gaze to stare at the man. His hair was mossy green and he had three golden earrings on his left ear. A serious look on his face gave away that he was determined to get what he needed to be done. But his ears pointed up, reminding him of elves and fairies from his storybooks.

For a moment, he just stared at his face. Then, he pushed back to see how he was moving. He never heard footsteps. Only the slide of something against the soil, leaves, and grass. And the motion was much too fluid to be made by walking on two feet.

And he gasped as he saw something he hadn't expected at all. A shiny, emerald green, scaly tail instead of feet greeted him. It bewildered him. Excitement rose up inside him. "Y-You're a sn-snake p-person," he got out in a soft voice, too amazed to speak any louder.

"Yeah. Don't tell your father. I'm not supposed to interact with you without permission," the man said. His presence proved that there were, in fact, males as well. So, this was a great discovery for such a small child.

Law didn't have any more questions or words. He was too stunned to say anything more. So, the man just kept heading to his destination. And it didn't take them much longer to get there. Once they got to a certain spot, the snake man bent down and placed him on the ground. Then, he was turned around. That's when he spotted the tent his father had set several yards away.

"You can go back to your father now. But, please, keep our meeting between just the two of us. I would rather not get into trouble for interacting with humans without permission beforehand." Law nodded, not believing that his wish had come true. "Well, you should head back. I bet he's been worried sick after you disappeared."

Law turned to look up at the man as he smiled down at him. Sharp teeth poked out from underneath his top lip. Two fangs that mirrored a snake's. "My name is Law. What's yours?" He believed it was good to introduce himself to his savior.

"Zoro. Now, head back before something happens." Law agreed.

"Thank you, Zoro. I really appreciate it." He gave the man a big smile, teeth and all. "I hope to see you again. You're really friendly." With that, he didn't wait for an answer. He took off out of the jungle to find his father.

I got to meet a snake man! This is the best thing ever! I loved it! But I can't tell Dad. That sucks. But I might see him again! Giggles bubbled up in his chest as he got closer to the camp they'd set up days before. Then, they left his mouth. I wanna see him again. So kind and cool! He's great!

"Dad! Dad, I'm back!" he shouted into the area, hoping his father was there. But he couldn't contain his happiness. Though, he knew better than to tell anyone about Zoro. So, he would keep it a secret for as long as he could. No matter what.

4 Years Have Passed

"Law, don't go too far. We don't want what happened that time to happen again," his father said in a cheery but slightly stern tone. Law rolled his eyes with a smile on his face. His father had let up after two years of that incident happening. Which was good for him because he liked to explore alone most of the time.

"I'll be fine," he assured his father. "I'm just going to go find some snakes." Still, his fascination with the creatures hadn't disappeared at all. On the contrary, he loved them even more. "And I'll be back by dinnertime. I promise to stay out of trouble."

"You may be ten and even more mature for children your age, but that doesn't mean you won't be swallowed up by some of the creatures here. Just... be careful. And don't go too far. I want you to be able to hear me when I call out to you." His father placed a hand on his head and ruffled his hair. "Do you understand, Law?"

"Yes, sir. I won't go too far. And I'll stay out of trouble. I won't bother the creatures. I just want to watch the snakes." His father laughed while a large grin spread across his face. "And I'll tell you about the ones I saw when I get back."

"Alright. Don't forget your snacks, water, and lunch. I don't expect you to return until later this evening." Law showed him that he had everything he needed. Even a medical bag. He was more than prepared this time. He even had his phone if his father needed to contact him quickly. It was implemented the year before. "Good. Now, be safe and remember to have fun. I'll tell you about the data I've collected over dinner."

"Good luck, Dad. I'll see you later." His father wished him luck as well before he rushed away from the camp his father had set up. It was the perfect time of the year to meet tons of different snakes. But that wasn't what he was looking forward to.

I might get to see him again. I saw him last year. Since Dad lets me go out further, I got to meet him again last year. I hope he's still around. I want to play with him again. And we can watch the snakes together. It'll be so much fun. But I hope he doesn't get into trouble. He said that the elders of his tribe don't like it when he hangs out with me.

With that on his mind, he hurried to the spot where they normally met up. Though, it would take an hour for him to get there. And that was if he didn't get distracted by the creatures around him. Law had always been a curious child and was intrigued by the critters in the jungle. But he knew better if he didn't want to upset his friend.

But, just like a normal child, he got caught up in watching a grass snake slither across the ground. After it left under a bush, Law pulled out his phone to check the time. His eyes widened as he slipped it back into his pocket.

"I'm late. He's gonna be so upset if he's there already. I didn't mean to get sidetracked. I hope he forgives me." Law pleaded with the man in his head that he wouldn't be too angry with him for being late. And it was his first day back.

It took him another forty-five minutes before he arrived at the meeting spot. Of course, the guy was already there. However, he looked agitated. Law took a deep breath and gathered his courage as he stepped out into the clearing.

Immediately, the other's head snapped around. His eyes narrowed at him as he stood there awkwardly. Law gave a sheepish grin as he moved closer. "You're twenty minutes late," he growled at him. However, Law knew he wouldn't stay angry with him. "I was informed of your arrival. Why can't you be on time? You even left your camp early."

"S-Sorry. I... I got caught up watching a grass snake on the way here." His eyes traveled down to the beautiful tail that was on full display as the man sat on the only rock in the clearing. "Please, don't be mad at me, Zoro. It was really pretty. Its tail reminded me of yours. But not as dark or vibrant."

He turned his gaze back up to Zoro's face. He could see the pink tinting his cheeks as he turned his face away to pout. "Whatever. When do you have to be back? I know you have a curfew for being out in the jungle. You've told me so before."

"Dinnertime. I have to be back right before the sun sets completely." Law stepped over to climb onto the rock beside him. "I have the book you like to read. And I brought my journal to show you all the data I've collected about different snakes back home." He knew exactly what interested the older man.

Zoro didn't look much different from when he first met him. He still resembled a teenager around the age of sixteen. It didn't bother Law in the least. Mainly because Zoro explained that they aged very differently than humans. Plus, they lived much longer lives than most other creatures in the world. The man had informed him that he was around a hundred and fifty years old in human years. Zoro never gave him a direct answer.

Moving his backpack into his lap, he opened it up and dug through it for two books. Zoro waited patiently for him to get them out. It only took him a moment or two to retrieve them. And once he got them out, he handed him the storybook that Zoro loved so much.

The Echidna accepted the book with a contented look on his face. Law took his journal and opened it up to find the new snakes he'd recorded since they last met. It didn't take long since he also took pictures to keep up with them.

"Zoro, these are the new ones I've gotten information on back home," he explained as he pointed to the first one. "I named this one Petunia. She's an Albino Nelson's Milksnake. She's not native to our environment. I rescued her from an abusive owner a month after we left her last year. I've been taking care of her so I can find her a loving home."

The man looked over to see which one he was talking about. "That's a very interesting-looking snake. I've never seen one of that colour before." Law nodded. They didn't have some snakes that they had back home. "What's that one?" Zoro pointed to the one below the milksnake.

And thus started their time of looking through his journal at the different snakes he'd found back home. Zoro always seemed fascinated by the different types of snakes that weren't native to the jungle. The teen seemed in awe when he had more to share with him.

When lunch rolled around, he pulled out four rice balls that his father had given him for his meal. Law shared two of them with Zoro. The guy stared at it for a bit before eating. He watched his face light up after taking a hesitant bite of the first one. Then, he devoured it in one go.

"These are called rice balls, right?' Zoro asked, licking the excess rice off of his fingers.

"Yeah. My mom made them before we came here. They're kept fresh in the refrigerator and a cooler. But they're delicious and one of my favourite foods." Law smiled up at him. "I thought I would share something I love with you since we're friends."

He watched as Zoro's face turned red again as he turned it away again. "Y-Yeah. We're... We're friends." His eyebrows furrowed at the Echidna's wary tone when confirming that they were, indeed, friends.

What's with that reaction? Is he not sure that we're friends? Why is he so bothered saying that we are? I don't get it. Zoro, are we not really friends to you? Or is it because we only started hanging out last year? I'm sorry to pressure you into accepting my friendship if you aren't ready for it. Please, don't be forced to say we are friends.

His smile disappeared as he took another bite of his rice ball. Now, he felt guilty for pushing Zoro into being friends with him. He never wanted to push anything on the other. And he believed he'd done just that. So, he felt terrible for doing so.

Then, a hand was placed in his hair. "Sorry for making you doubt our friendship. It's just... I don't have too many friends back home." The hand tussled his hair before he batted it away. " Back home, there's mainly women. Men are rare. So, it's hard for me. Relationships with humans are very... rare... for our kind. Mainly because we choose to stay away."

"Why? Some of us aren't as bad as others." Law knew how horrible humans could be. He'd seen it with his own eyes. But he wasn't anywhere near being like them. He loved nature, respected every living creature, and never disturbed the habitats he had the opportunity to observe. So, he had no idea why their relationship would be frowned upon by their kind.

"We know that. But it's to keep others of your kind away. Even if we are in the same world as you, some of the elders know about how humans can devastate ecosystems and the lives of the creatures around them." Law nodded, understanding their views. Even at the tender age of ten, he knew how humans have destroyed habitats, making the inhabitants suffer and some die off.

"I would never do anything like that. All creatures are special and needed in the world." Law turned to grin up at him. "Even your kind. We may not know your purpose, but your people are still needed in this world. If not, why would you be here?"

Zoro grinned back down at him. But his cheeks were tinted a light shade of red again. Law found it cute that the man was flattered by his words. "Thanks. Same as you. But some of your people need to take better care of their environment. If they don't, it'll kill off the world. Then, what would you do?"

After that conversation, Law changed the subject to looking for more snakes and creatures in the area. Zoro was all too eager to help him They finished off their lunch before heading into the jungle. It always made him feel better when they didn't talk about humans. Law understood that they weren't the best. But he would try his hardest to keep this habitat from being invaded.

But, during their time together, he could feel that they were being watched. Zoro never gave away that he noticed. Yet, Law couldn't ignore the burning sensation that crept up his back as they searched for the different critters that scurried about the jungle floor.

When the sun was an hour or two from hitting the horizon, Law realized he had to head back to camp if he wanted to make it in time. If not, he would get an earful for not listening to his father. However, he didn't want to leave his friend. Even if he would meet up with him the next day, Law still wanted to hang out with him a little longer.

And Zoro noticed his downtrodden expression. "What's wrong, Law? Why are you so upset? Aren't you having fun?" The man did have a point. They found five more snakes that he was able to document and take pictures of. Zoro even gave him a description of their diet and breeding habits.

"I am having fun," he countered. "It's just that..." Law looked up at the sky. "I've got to head back if I want to make it before the sun sets. Dad's going to scold me if I'm late. And he might not let me go out on my own tomorrow if I don't head back now."

Zoro's face fell as well. "You'll be back tomorrow, right?" Then, he had a defiant look on his face. "Not that I care or not." It almost made Law laugh. Zoro always tried to sound tough and unbothered by things. But he was able to see right through him. Law knew that the Echidna enjoyed his company.

"I promise I'll be back tomorrow. Then we can read the book. We didn't get a chance today." Law replaced his journal in his backpack. But he picked up the storybook off the rock and handed it to Zoro. "You can keep it for now. Read it as many times as you want. But I want to read it together with you tomorrow." He smiled brightly up at his best friend. "Have a good night, Zoro. I'll see you in the morning."

The man's face lit up before he took the book. "Same to you. Now, get going before you get into trouble. I don't want you to be late tomorrow." Law agreed before rushing off back to the campsite his father and he had set up. But he was looking forward to the next day.

I love spending time with him. He's way cooler than the kids back home. I wish I could join Dad more often. But school makes it difficult to go with him. Maybe I can ask him if I can be homeschooled. I can work on my schoolwork while we're here and submit it when I get back home. It'll be perfect. And I could visit Zoro more often. A chuckle of excitement bubbled up out of him. I still haven't told anyone about him. But his people know about me. I just need to keep it that way.

With a skip in his step, he made his way back to the camp. Though, he thought about all the things he and Zoro could do the next day. Law wanted to know more about his kind. That was the whole reason he had a separate journal. He was documenting them as well. However, he would never share his data with anyone. Not even his father.

Notes:

It's a slow burn so far. But he's aging in each chapter until he hits his normal age. But something important is going to happen in the next one. I hope you all enjoyed this addition to the story. I'm having fun writing this one. I love you all so so so so so so much and wish you a stellar day. Tatty-bye!

Fun Facts:

1. The skin around the finger and toenails dries and contracts after death, making it look as though they have grown. (That's freaky. But it's understandable since our skin already shrivels up because of the lack of moisture and other things our bodies produce when alive.)

2. Dead bodies swell up like balloons after about four days due to the release of gases and liquids. (I would be disgusted to see such a thing happen. But I would be tempted to poke it with something sharp to see it pop. Sorry. A bit morbid.)

3. The Zoroastrian Parsi community in India offers its dead to vultures rather than burying/burning them. (It's less expensive. Also, I love learning about other cultures. So, this is very interesting to me. I might look more into it.)

4. The Turritopsis Dohrnii jellyfish is officially known as the only immortal creature in the world. (It reverts back to a sexually immature, colonial stage after having reached sexual maturity as a solitary individual. If it gets too old, it will do so as well and then grow up again. So, it's like if we got into our 60s-90s and then reverted back into the toddler stage. Very freaky but awesome.)

Saving a Life

"You're camping out there for a few nights again, right?" his father questioned as Law made sure he had his cooler completely fixed up and full for him. The ice packs wouldn't melt for several days. That made it easier for him to stay out longer.

"Yes. I have some snakes I need to study closer. It'll be a lot easier if I can spend more time in the wild around them. I want to make sure my notes are correct." He closed his cooler before donning his backpack equipped with an advanced first-aid kit, a folded-up tent that was capable of housing three large men, and a sleeping bag. Plus, he had a few changes of clothes so he wouldn't have to wear the same thing the whole time. "I promise to be back in a week. I'll have more data about the local species. It'll help with further researching antivenoms for the people in the area."

"I understand. Such a smart boy. But, please, be careful. And keep away from the Echidna. We shouldn't interfere with their way of life. But I don't think it'll be hard. They seem to be wary of us." Law nodded. But he knew better than to tell his father the truth. That was a secret he'd carried with him for ten years by then. 'Now, get out there, have fun, and gather some data."

Law grinned before picking up the cooler to head out into the jungle. But he had a particular destination in mind. The very special spot he and his friend met up every time he came around. It was routine by then. Plus, he hadn't once broken that cycle for them. He wouldn't do so today. Also, he was setting out far earlier than ever before. Just so he would be on time. Maybe even arriving before Zoro.

On his walk there, he hummed a tune he'd heard on the radio the day before. But his head was full of what he and Zoro would do once he informed him he had another week to spend with him. But then, he was sixteen. Law had begun spending a week at a time with him before heading back to the camp with his dad to stay one week with him. He would go in between for two months before they headed back home to share their research with his father's colleagues.

He'd graduated high school a year prior. His homeschooling had allowed him to advance further than his peers far faster in only five years. Now, he was hoping to acquire his PhD in zoology by the time he was eighteen. He would be the youngest zoologist ever. And he looked forward to that title.

It took him an hour to get to their spot. This time, he made sure not to get distracted by any of the snakes and other critters around the area. It was extremely difficult, but he was able to focus on making it there. His excitement grew with each passing second. Law couldn't wait to hang out with his best friend.

Once he made it there, he situated himself on the rock. Zoro hadn't arrived yet, but he was expecting him to be there within the hour. It wasn't normal for the Echidna to be late. He was, unnaturally, keen when time was in play. Especially when it came to him visiting. Law chalked it up to him calculating how much time they would have together coupled with not liking waiting. Not very surprising when you know about their people.

While he waited for the other to arrive, he moved his backpack around so he could get a specific notebook out. It was his secret one that his family respected not to go through. And that made life easier for him. His family was very adamant about letting them have privacy. It let them have trust in one another.

Pulling it out, he smiled at seeing the weathered appearance of it. Yet, it remained locked with a small padlock he'd placed on it years before. Taking it off and opening it up, Law grinned at seeing all the data he'd collected over the past eight years. Ever since he became friends with Zoro.

The data ranged from the diet of Echidnas to their ways of hunting to how they tended to wounds to how they built shelters and so much more. Zoro didn't hold back when it came to just about every question he had. Hell, he even went into great detail when explaining all of it. Law wrote every word of it down.

He flipped through the pages, admiring his ability to take so many notes and get so much on each page. But most of it was incomplete. Zoro wouldn't tell him some things. Like if they did rituals or had a way to tell if a member of their society was going to be male or female. It was strange that stuff involving others in their society wasn't something he wanted to talk about with Law. It saddened him but he understood and never tried to pry.

About an hour or so passed before he became worried and confused at the lack of Zoro showing up. Law had replaced the notebook in his bag five minutes before. Zoro's really late. What's going on? Did something happen to hold him up? Did he forget? I hope everything's alright. But... something doesn't feel right. I don't like it.

Suddenly, something came shooting out of a nearby bush. Law yelped as he almost fell off of the rock. But he was able to keep his balance. Yet, his eyes zeroed in on the thing that came at him. However, it wasn't a thing at all but a person. Specifically, a small Echidna girl.

Law raised an eyebrow as she got up from the ground. She'd landed on her face when coming out of the bush. But he could hear her breathing heavily. As if she'd rushed there like the devil was at her heels. Or... tail-end.

This Echidna had pure white, wavy hair and jade green eyes. Her tail was a spring green. A stark contrast to Zoro's rich, emerald green. A half-shirt made of large leaves covered her flat chest. That confirmed the man's description and explanation that a handful of women, both children and adults, wore clothing made out of leaves.

Once she caught her breath, that's when he saw the panicked look on her childish face. That made him tense up. Then, she turned her full attention to him. The girl darted over to him before latching onto the front of his shirt, pulling him down closer to her. Tears spilled over and ran down her pale cheeks.

"Please! We need your help! Nothing the elders do is working! He's dying! Please! You're his friend, right?! Come save him! He's going to die if you don't come help him!" Her words shocked him to his core. But the mention of him being 'his friend' made Law realize who she was talking about.

Instead of asking questions as to what was going on at the time, she backed off and he gathered up his stuff. "Take me to him. I'm not sure what I can do, but I'll try my best." The girl nodded vigorously before turning around and patting her back. "Huh?"

"It's faster if I take you there by carrying you. Human legs can't go anywhere near as fast as we can." Law stared at her for a split second. But he didn't argue. He needed to know what was going on with Zoro. And he feared the worst had happened to his friend.

Law hopped onto her back, and she wrapped her arms around his legs before taking off. It surprised him that such a small Echidna was able to hold him and all of his items while moving so fast. The wind whipped around them as she took him deeper into the jungle. Further than he'd ever gone before. Even with Zoro.

He held on around her neck, making the whole situation feel as if she was giving him a piggyback ride. Law didn't mind, though, and knew it was better than holding on any other way. He didn't want to be dragged across the ground. Plus, it was, probably, more comfortable for both of them. Though, he found it a bit awkward given that he was quite a bit taller and larger than her.

Their surroundings blurred around them as she kept going. However, his anxiety grew with each passing second. From the fear of his friend losing his life, the hostility of their people because he was an outsider and human, and the uncertainty that he would be able to save Zoro's life. Even if he didn't know the severity of the situation, he still had doubts about his ability to save a life he didn't fully understand.

It only took them ten minutes before she began to slow down. Law was able to see the area they were in. His eyes widened at what he was viewing. Even his jaw dropped in amazement. They're far more advanced than we thought. I need to document this. No pictures. Just words. Though, that'll make it a bit difficult. But this is truly beautiful.

The girl had brought him to an archway that led down into a denser part of the jungle. The only lights were some lanterns made of fireflies, branches, twine, and leaves. It surprised him to see the bugs still alive and around during the day. But it was clear they didn't touch any sunlight. They lit the way down the path.

"Please, be respectful. The elders are already wary of letting you be here. You're the first human ever to set foot in our home. But we need someone to help him. He's not getting any better. We're... We're afraid for him."

"Can you tell me what happened? I need to know what to prepare for. It'll be longer and harder for all of us if I'm not informed of his condition. That could risk his life as well." He was honest and kind to her. Law could tell she was still crying. And that pained him even more.

I assume he's special to them. Especially if males are rare for them. I presume they reproduce asexually since it's nearly impossible for them to do so regularly. Maybe that's something I should ask about. I'm very curious as to how they have more females than males. It's super strange. But that'll have to wait until after I save him. If I can.

"There's some of us that were banished because of their rebellious attitudes. They... They broke a few rules that were put in place for the safety of all of us." Her shoulders shook, giving away that she was sobbing again. But it was already obvious by the wavering tone of her voice. "He... He faced off against them. They... They sl-sliced his ch-chest and across his l-left... left eye. It's... It's terrible." Law disliked the whole explanation. Though, he knew there was only so much he could do.

It took about five minutes to get through the tunnel that led into their community. Law was, once again, in awe at what he saw. They had even built up in the trees. There were walkways, buildings, and a bunch of other structures. They used the same lanterns he'd seen before. No sunlight touched even an inch of the place. It bewildered him immensely. But there were huts and other things on the ground as well.

Once they entered the area, all eyes turned to him. And he found it full of women with only two males. But they appeared to be children. Like the ages of five and ten. Nowhere near being adults or able to conceive children with another. That shocked him even more. Yet, he felt self-conscious about being the center of attention.

The girl took him through the place. The others around them gawked at him as if he was an oddity on display. Many whispered to each other as they passed by. But all looked very different from one another. Even their tails were extraordinary. Not all of them had green tails. The colours hit all of them in the rainbow and then some. Even pink and purple. So many different colours that he hadn't expected snakes to have. But he assumed their colours were unique to only their kind.

They followed them as she brought him to a hut right beside a much larger one. He assumed it was where their elders resided. Though, he couldn't be sure. At the moment, he didn't have the time to figure it out. His friend was in need and not even their own people could save him. And that concerned him greatly.

"He's inside. Please, remember to be respectful. Bow when addressing the elders. They are very stubborn when it comes to tradition and showing respect." Law nodded as she let him down. He handed her the cooler of food.

"Will you hold this for me for the time being? Please, don't open it." The girl nodded, staying outside the hut. Law took a deep breath before heading inside.

He just about puked at the smell of infection and blood mixing together. Plus, he swore he could smell rotting vomit as well. Not a good thing to walk into. But he swallowed the bile back down as he made it to where a group of people were crowded around a bed.

Law glanced around and could immediately tell that the hut was used as their version of an infirmary. But the sickening odor in the air drowned out the pleasant scents of herbs and other medicinal aromas. However, he zeroed in on the group.

"Excuse me," he voiced, using a respectful tone. He wanted to make a good first impression if they happened to be the elders he'd heard about so many times.

A loud moan full of agony echoed in the space. Law flinched when he realized it was Zoro's vocals that had produced it. But the ones in front of him turned to address him. Though, he saw how agreed all of the women were.

"The human has come," one said in a sweet tone. Though, all of them looked near the age of a century-old human. He bowed, remembering the girl's words from before. "And he has manners. How quaint."

Standing back up straight, he took in their expressions. Even though they appeared skeptical and wary of him, he could see their dismay. He couldn't blame them. One of their own was so sick that not even they could cure him. Though, he still would try his best.

"May I see him, please? I need to see how bad it is." He didn't move. No. Law knew better than to do something without getting permission. Even if Zoro had to him they were annoying old hags, he still had respect for them and listened most of the time.

They shared a look between themselves before parting to allow him to see his friend. A gasp left him when he saw the man lying in the be. Blood and pus oozed from the wound on his left eye and the one across his chest. It was clear none of their remedies had helped in any way.

"We're not sure what you can do, but you're our last hope," another one voiced. There was a scratchy tone to hers. "If you aren't able to help him, then he's doomed. We've tried everything we can."

Law made it over to the Echidna, examining him. Of course, it was worse than it first appeared. Though, they had sewn up his chest. However, the infection didn't look good at all. Then, he turned to look at the other's face.

"H-How... How long has he been like this?"

"About two days. We've tried everything. Nothing seems to get the infection to go away. We've been cleaning it every hour, yet it doesn't get any better." There was sorrow in that one's voice. "Please, you're his friend. Help him."

"I'll try my best. But I need some clean water so I can wipe away what's already accumulated on the surface. It'll be easier to start there. I, also, might have to remove the stitches to make sure I get it all." He went immediately into work mode. Even if he wasn't a doctor by title, he had a firm and advanced grasp on treating all ailments. It helped a lot. Especially at this moment.

"Rebecca! Fetch some clean water! He's about to start!" The shout made him jump a little. But he didn't dwell on it. Another of the women gave him a chair to sit on beside the unconscious Echidna.

I won't let you die, Zoro. You're my best friend. I'll make sure you get through this. Even if it's the last thing I do. I promise I'll save you. Your people are counting on me. I won't let them or even you down. This might be my first time doing this, but now's a better time than any. Please, trust me. I'll fix you up. Please, don't die on me.

He moved the backpack in front of him before digging out the first-aid kit. This procedure would need all of the contents inside by the end of it. Even the medicines. But he had faith in himself that he could do it. All Law wanted was for his friend to make it out alive and well. Scars weren't a concern at the time. His life was more important. And he would do anything to save it.

Notes:

Law's got a major task on his hands. Even though he's doubting himself, he's going to try his best. They trust him enough to ask for his help. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. I love every single one of you so so so much and wish you a magnificent day. Tatty-bye!

Fun Facts:

1. Your mind "rewrites" monotonous speech of boring people to make it sound more interesting. (I can vouch for this. I'll even add more emotion and be louder when I quote things I've heard.)

2. The human brain cannot create faces. Therefore, when you dream, if you see someone you don't know, you have seen their face before - even if it was for a split second at the store. (That's terrifying. I dislike this immensely. But it's logical. Real, human faces are impossible to create. Fictional faces are easy for some.)

3. Women have significantly more nightmares and emotional dreams than men. (I've had two dreams like this. One was a nightmare about a demon jumping at me. I woke up and turned a light on. I had a sense of dread for a few weeks after. The other was a dream about me being in a relationship with Doflamingo. I woke up in a panic before being relieved that I wasn't actually pregnant with his child. That's a whole story and I don't want to get into it right now.)

4. We like to listen to music that matches our emotional states because the music provides emotional validation and is therapeutic. (I listen to sad music at work. I don't know. I just feel like it. It's soothing.)

Taking Care and Awakening

The only way he'd kept track of time was by checking his phone every few hours. By then, two weeks had passed since he'd been there. Far more time than he anticipated to be there. However, he was keeping an eye on his friend's condition. Law wouldn't let him die on him. Not when he cared about him so much. Plus, the elders and others of the society were counting on him to save Zoro.

At the time, he was sitting on the floor beside the bed. He'd just rewetted and replaced the rag on Zoro's forehead. Law had been there for hours, fighting off sleep as best he could. He hadn't slept in what felt like days. But he hadn't moved from his spot next to his friend other than to use the restroom. However, he thanked those who brought him food and water after his own supply ran out. Hell, he'd even called his father to let him know he'd be gone for an extended period. He hadn't questioned it in the slightest and only told him to be careful and to come back safe and sound. So, he was able to spend more time helping Zoro rest and recover.

To his great relief after a week and a half, his condition had begun to improve. The infection had cleared up completely, Zoro didn't look to be in as much pain as before, he slept soundly instead of restlessly, and he was able to regain enough consciousness to eat and drink before passing out again right after. Law saw that as good progress.

The elders had even stopped acting old and standoffish to him. All of them treated him with respect and were kinder than when he first arrived. Law chalked it up to him being able to stabilize and improve Zoro's state. So, it wasn't unexpected since he was caring for a very important member of their society.

As he was about to nod off, the sound of someone entering the hut with him caused Law to jolt awake again and snap his head around to see who was there. He relaxed when he saw one of the elders entering with a steaming bowl in her hands. She slithered over to him before moving to sit on the ground beside him. Law remembered her to be called 'Tsuru'.

"You look ready to pass away," she announced in a kind but scratchy tone. Law learned that certain elders were kinder than the rest. But they still had their unease around him. He was, after all, human and an outsider. "Have you not been sleeping? You need to rest as well to be at your best. Don't just take care of Zoro. Take care of yourself as well."

Law gave an exhausted chuckle before turning his gaze back to his friend. He looked peaceful at the time. "I'm afraid that if I go to sleep, something might happen to him. I've forgotten when the last time I slept was." He wasn't lying. It'd been so many days that he couldn't remember.

"That's not good at all." He let off a heavy sigh at her concern. "Well, I brought some lunch for you. You need to eat and get some sleep. I'll stay right here until you wake back up. I promise that if something does happen, I'll wake you up immediately. You need to rest."

I understand that you're concerned about my health, Elder Tsuru, but that doesn't rid me of my fear. I'm worried about something bad happening if I fall asleep even for a second. Especially because of the scare the last time I got even a wink of sleep. Something did happen. It wasn't too bad, but a complication did arise. After that, I promised myself not to sleep until he woke up and is alright.

Seemingly able to read his thoughts precisely, Tsuru responded to them with a tone full of wisdom and sympathy. "I understand that something occurred that one time you did try to sleep, but what if you pass out and are unable to help him when needed? You need to be at your best to ensure his safety and health. Please, eat and rest. Again, I promise to stay right here until you wake up. I won't go anywhere."

She handed the bowl over to him. His stomach growled in protest at the smell of stew. Even his mouth watered in anticipation of being able to eat a meal again. For some reason, their food was far more delicious than anything he'd ever tasted. Law chalked it up to them using fresh, foraged ingredients and hunted creatures for their food. Practically a homecooked meal.

Taking it with sluggish movements, Law began to slowly eat. Then, he saw a look on the elder's face that gave away she had something else to say to him. He raised an eyebrow, questioning her expression without saying anything aloud. Tsuru just smiled back at him at first. But it didn't take her long to respond to his look.

"We're going to be holding a ceremony for you once Zoro is up and about." His eyebrows furrowed at that. None of them had informed him of such a thing before. "It's not anything bad or something to worry about. In fact, it might benefit you and our kind equally. Though, you must not ever mention it to anyone outside of our society. Even your father."

Law swallowed his mouthful of stew before replying to her. "He's still unaware of my friendship with Zoro," he informed her. "I've been able to keep that secret from my entire family for almost a decade now. Do you think I'll tell anyone after such a long time of being able to hold onto it for that long? Do you think I would break Zoro's trust by telling others what I know?" He wasn't accusing her of saying he would spill his knowledge to anyone. It was just a little annoying and a tiny bit insulting that they still held mistrust in him. Though, he knew it would take more time for them to warm up to him. So, it didn't bother him nearly as much as it would most.

"Humans go against their beliefs and promises a lot. But, for some reason, Zoro has more trust in you than us." That got him to raise an eyebrow. She glanced over at the man on the bed beside him. "He spends more time with you than anyone else. When you aren't here, he keeps to himself and doesn't share his thoughts. It's a little disappointing that he doesn't seem to be interested in our ways of life. He only does what he's told and nothing more. But we don't ask much of him to begin with. Especially because he hasn't chosen to settle down."

Law swallowed a mouthful of stew before responding to her. "Is it normal for the males of your kind to pick someone to settle down with?" It piqued his curiosity to have her sharing their way of life with him. Law would take any chance he could get.

"Not exactly. Males are rare and not needed to repopulate. We do so perfectly fine without male interference." Law nodded, overjoyed to have one of his questions finally answered. "But we fear he'll leave our society if he doesn't find a partner. It doesn't matter if they're male or female. We just... would rather him not stray from our clan."

"Is my presence a problem to you in that regard?" He had a feeling she was hinting that his friendship with Zoro was an issue for them. Mainly because he seemed fascinated with his lifestyle and the gadgets he brought to show him.

A deep, defeated sigh left the elder Echidna. "I will not lie and say we don't think that's the case. But we don't want to force him to stay here if that's not what he wants." The devastated tone of her voice gave away that they'd contemplated this many times. "However, if he does wind up leaving the clan, we won't stop him. We know he holds no grudge or ill will toward us. We just want him to be happy."

Most parents and guardians want that for their family members. I guess they see Zoro as a very helpful member of their society. Especially because he's done so much for them. I mean, he even got injured and almost lost his life to protect them. I applaud him for his bravery and inherent need to defend his people. But it's slightly unlikely that he'll want to leave if they're that close, regardless of his views toward them.

While he continued to eat his stew, Tsuru told him about the different things that happened in their society. Law enjoyed it immensely since he was learning more about their kind. He didn't hold anything against Zoro for not telling him about them. It was normal for someone to be skittish when talking about their people if they didn't think it was necessary or if it was just uncomfortable for them. But he ate up every word she said.

However, at the end of his meal, his exhaustion finally caught up with him once again. His eyes drooped more than before, and he had trouble keeping his head up. Law handed the bowl off to her again. Tsuru accepted it before she reached up and ran a hand through his hair. He didn't have the energy to stop her, move away, or even question why she did it.

"Get you some sleep, dearie. He's not going anywhere. I'll stay right here. Please, rest." Her sweet and soothing, but still a little scratchy, tone lulled him to sleep. Law leaned over and laid his head on the side of the bed as his eyes slid closed. The last thing he heard was the woman whispering something that he couldn't decipher in the moment.

...

"Where is he?! Is he alright?! Let me see him! I want to see him!" Shouting echoed in the small hut, waking him up. But, even through his sleep-fogged mind, he recognized it. However, his body didn't listen to him fast enough to respond properly to the noise or even the voice.

"Zoro, you need to calm down. He's sleeping. Please, don't bother him. He's been awake for days trying to save your life. Show some respect and kindness for the young man." That was the voice of Gloriosa, one of the elders. Though, she sounded more sympathetic than upset. However, he felt a little put off that Zoro had finally woken up. "Plus, you're going to rip your stitches. He worked so hard to take care of you."

A groan escaped him as it registered that he was lying in a bed. I guess Tsuru moved me to it so I wasn't sleeping on the floor. That was a kind gesture for her to do. But why is he so frantic? He should be worried about himself rather than me. I don't get it. However, it's kinda sweet that he cares so much.

Then, he felt a presence over him. "Law," the other wheezed out. His eyes fluttered open to find Zoro hovering over him. A mixture of relief and concern crossed his sweaty features. Even his chest heaved with every breath he took. Seconds later, he dropped down to sit beside the bed he was on. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion and worry at the dramatic scene.

"What's going on?" he questioned, voice still groggy from sleep. Though, he did feel more refreshed than before. Some sleep had helped him tremendously with his exhaustion. However, he had no idea how long he'd been sleeping for. Suddenly, he saw tears start to stream down Zoro's face. That startled him since he'd never seen the man cry before. "Z-Zoro...?"

"I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry," he sobbed out before laying his head on the bed beside him. Law couldn't believe what he was hearing. Even if the man's other eye wasn't opening, tears had still been able to escape it. "I didn't mean to worry you so much. I'm sorry, Law."

Law glanced over at Glorisoa and Tsuru who looked saddened at the scene playing out before them. He didn't know how to react at the time. But he did reach out and place a hand on Zoro's head. It was the least he could do to comfort him. However, he could tell how hurt the Echidna was from having gotten injured.

"It's okay," he tried to reassure him. But he didn't know how well it was working. "I'm just glad you're alive and well. I wasn't expecting you to wake up so early, though. You were out for two weeks by now." That only seemed to make him sob even harder. Law watched his body jerk from them. His gaze softened as he stared at his friend.

But he didn't expect Zoro to lift his arms up and wrap them around his waist. Then, he pulled himself up into Law's lap, wetting the blanket on his legs. He moved his other hand to pat his back while he ran his fingers through his short, green hair. That's when he decided to try to soothe him by gently shushing him and telling him that it was fine.

He lifted his gaze after a bit to find that the two elders stayed there, staring at them with compassion and sadness. "Do you think we can perform the ceremony tomorrow?" Tsuru inquired to Gloriosa, not taking her eyes away from him and Zoro. Law remembered her telling him about it.

"Of course. We weren't expecting Zoro to regain consciousness so early, but we'll have everything prepped and ready by nyoon tomorrow. That should be the best time to perform it. The sun is a great source of energy for us." Once again, his eyebrows furrowed with confusion, but he didn't say anything about what they were talking about. Instead, he turned his attention back to Zoro.

I wonder what this 'ceremony' entails. Will Zoro tell me beforehand, or will I find out when it happens? I'm super curious now. What could it be for? I haven't seen them do anything like that the whole time I've been here. I guess it's something they do rarely. But why am I a part of it? I have so many questions.

"I'm glad you're here," Zoro whispered as he tightened his arms around him. "I wouldn't have it any other way. I owe you my life since you saved it. Please, forgive me for scaring you so badly." A sharp pain shot through his heart at the devastated tone Zoro used. But he kept affectionately rubbing his back and playing with his hair. He was just happy that his friend pulled through and survived. But he still harbored both curiosity and some slight unease about the 'ceremony'.

Notes:

Law's just happy that Zoro's okay. But he's not sure about this 'ceremony'. The next chapter will be about it. I love you all so so so so much and wish you a wonderful day. Tatty-bye!

Fun Facts:

1. If you don't move in 15 minutes, you will fall asleep. (I can vouch for this. I've seen many of my family members do so. Especially my mom, dad, and grandpa.)

2. The dildo was invented about 15,000 years before the wheel. (I mean... some people needed to have fun back then too. Especially when they had no one else around sometimes.)

3. Dead people can get goosebumps. (That's super creepy. Almost as if they're alive. I would be very uncomfortable to see that happen. Especially if they'd been dead for a while.)

4. Poecilotheria metallica is one of the most beautiful tarantulas in the world. It's only found in a small area of less than 100 square kilometers in Central Southern India. (It's a mixture of blue, white, gold, and black. I think it's super pretty. Though, I wouldn't be allowed to keep one as a pet. My dad hates spiders.)

Ceremony

"Is this really necessary, Zoro?" he questioned, looking down at the outfit he'd been instructed to wear by the Elders. Of course, he hadn't argued in the slightest when told to wear it at first. But now, however, he was starting to second-guess himself when accepting that request. Especially because he wasn't used to wearing such an outfit.

A chuckle sounded from around the dividing wall. He narrowed his eyes as he turned to glare at where he knew the other was. However, he got an answer from the man a moment later. "It's what the Elders want you to wear. And you need to be dressed in something resembling our kind. They believe that you need to be physically connected to our culture for this ceremony to go properly without any hiccups. If you're dressed in outsider clothes, it complicates things."

A huff left him as he tried to push the skirt down enough to cover himself a little more. "I understand that. I really do. But couldn't the skirt be a little... longer? I'm taller than they think." It didn't help that his face was bright red as he tried to make sure nothing vital was showing.

Zoro chuckled again at his complaint. "Well, male Echidnas' genitals aren't hanging out like yours." Law's face felt as if it would melt off at Zoro's words. "So, it's hard to take that into account. And the women don't need to worry about that other than their chest if they decide to. That makes you an outlier. But they did the best they could with the time they had. They weren't expecting me to wake up yesterday."

"I know. Neither was I. I guess they had to rush everything to get the ceremony ready by noon today." Law felt kind of guilty that they were doing all this for him. Yet, he still didn't know what this 'ceremony' entailed. Not even Zoro could tell him much about it since it was last done several centuries before he came along. The male Echidna only knew a few things about it like the clothes that needed to be worn by them and that it had to be done when the sun was at its peak for the maximum probability of success.

Looking down once again, he took in the outfit they insisted he wore for the ceremony. At least ten beaded necklaces were wrapped around his neck and dangled right above his pecks, both of his biceps had two golden bands around them that were engraved with intricate designs, two bracelets made of rainbow feathers were around each of his wrists, a skirt made of large leaves hung low on his hips and stopped five inches above his knees, two anklets made of animal teeth were around his ankles, and he was barefoot. It was an odd outfit even to the ancient civilizations humans had discovered over the years.

"I feel weird," he voiced in a defeated tone. "I've never worn anything like this before. It's... different." He stepped out from behind the divider. "What do you think? How do I look?" Law raised his gaze to the Echidna, hoping to gain a genuine answer and not for Zoro to make jests at his odd appearance.

However, he wasn't prepared for the man to look absolutely stunned by him. Law's eyebrows furrowed in confusion at such a reaction. But he decided to wait to see if he would give him a logical answer. Yet, Zoro just stared for a few moments without saying a word. Law shifted from his left foot to his right a few times, growing more and more uncomfortable as the seconds ticked by.

"Um... Zoro?" It made him feel even more self-conscious to be stared at like that by the other man. As if he couldn't believe Law was dressed in such a way. Even his face heated up again as he lowered his head, hiding his face with his hair. "S-Say something. Don't... Don't just st-stare at me."

What the hell is with him? Why is he staring like that? It's so weird. Almost as if he's seeing something stunning. I don't look that strange, do I? I just dressed the way they wanted me to. Zoro, don't look at me like that. Just tell me your true thoughts about my outfit. I'm curious.

Seeming to come out of a trance that he'd suddenly fallen into, Law raised his head to watch the other's face turn bright red before he turned his face away. "You look... different. I'm used to seeing you in your normal clothes." Law just nodded. Though, he was a little curious about his initial reaction to him revealing his outfit to him. "But you're not ready yet."

His eyebrows furrowed at his statement. "What do you mean? I have to put something else on?"

Zoro nodded. "It's not another piece of clothing or jewelry. If I'm remembering correctly, they're supposed to paint some symbols on your body with some black paint made from crushed fruits only found in this part of the jungle."

That sounds sticky and kind of gross. But it has to be different than the juice of fruits, right? He did say it was paint made from the fruit. So, it's not entirely the juices of it. I guess it's just something they have to do for the ceremony to go well. I'm still very curious as to why I have to dress up. I don't get it. But I'm not going to question them either.

Then, he took in Zoro's appearance. That's when he noticed the man was dressed similarly to him. He hadn't realized it before but Zoro was also wearing similar necklaces, bangles, and bracelets as him. That piqued his interest even more. So many questions buzzed through his mind at the time.

Before either one of them could say anything more, some young female Echidna came rushing in with bowls in their hands. He raised an eyebrow before they stopped to gawk at him. He held back a laugh at seeing their eyes almost bulge out of their heads. But Zoro didn't hold back and laughed aloud. Though, their expression quickly turned to embarrassment as they lowered their heads but moved closer to him.

"Are you here to apply the paint?" he inquired. It was an astute observation given that they were holding bowls of what appeared to be black paint. Though, he wanted them to answer and tell him if it was true. Especially after Zoro said that was the last part of the outfit that he needed.

Out of the four of them, a blonde-haired one spoke up in a nervous tone. "Y-Yes. W-We're... We're here t-to... to p-paint the s-symbols on your... b-body." He nodded, understanding their nervousness. It wasn't every day that they got to interact with a human. Plus, most of them hadn't had the opportunity to meet and talk to him.

They hesitated for a few moments before using their fingers to apply the paint. It felt odd and the paint was cold, but he didn't dare let himself flinch. Law stood perfectly still as one worked on his face and the others did his torso, arms, and legs. He didn't say a word even as they complimented his physique. His face burned again at their praise over his body.

Soon enough, they were finished. Though, he looked down at his chest to see a circle around the middle of it. As if it was being purposefully left unmarked for a certain reason. After backing off from him, they moved on to paint Zoro as well. He watched them add the same strange symbols and other markings as they had on him. Once more, they left a circle on the man's chest just as they had with Law.

It didn't take long before they backed off from him as well and hurried out of the hut. Law found it very strange but didn't say anything about it. Instead, Zoro sighed as he stood up. "Let's get this over with. I have a feeling they're ready for us. The paint was the last thing that needed to be done." Law nodded as he headed out of the hut with Zoro right beside him.

Stepping out into the main part of the community, he noticed that things had changed quite a bit since he last set foot outside of the hut. Mainly due to there being two stone slabs that were large enough to hold two fully grown men. They were on a raised platform while the other members of the society were gathered around the whole thing. Law felt uneasy about the ceremony now that he saw something he hadn't expected.

The Elders were already waiting for them. They, too, were dressed elaborately, complete with feathered headdresses and painted bodies as well. Law swallowed the lump in his throat as everyone's attention seemed to fall on him and Zoro as they turned to them. Now, his anxiety began to show its ugly head.

One of the Elders stepped forward and addressed everyone present. Law believed her name was Kokoro. However, it was clear she'd been drinking the alcohol they produced. He rolled his eyes at seeing her drunken state. Though, he listened to what she had to say, and the same for everyone else.

"My dear people," she started with a slur to her words. "We're gathered here today to perform the ceremony to initiate Law, a human man, into our society. He saved Zoro's life where none of us were able to do so, showing us his compassion and deep-seated friendship between the two of them." His face heated up a few more degrees but didn't say anything as he stood next to Zoro. "This ceremony will bring them even closer together and help both of our communities. We're looking forward to this being the first of many steps forward into connecting and, possibly, trading with humans. This would be our first time in doing so after eight hundred years."

That's a long time for them to last perform the ceremony. I have a feeling it was with a human and they betrayed them. That's not too ridiculous to think about. But... I have no proof of such things. However, their distrust in humans might be a reference to that being the case. Though, I would never betray them. I adore their kind and don't want to lose my friendship with Zoro. He's the best friend I could never have at home. He understands me more than others. So, I'll do anything to keep it that way.

Kokoro backed off only for Tsuru to step forward. "Zoro, Law, please, come forward and lay on the slabs. The sun is almost completely overhead. We need to start as soon as it reaches its peak. That is when it's the best time to perform the ceremony without any mistakes occurring."

Again, he swallowed the lump in his throat before slowly making his way over to the two slabs. He could feel Zoro slithering right beside him. However, he felt as if something very frightening for him was about to happen. Though, he tried to gather his nerves and even took deep breaths to calm himself down.

After a few moments of silence, he made it over to one of the slabs while Zoro went over to the other. Knowing what to do, he sat on the edge of it before taking another deep breath and lying down. Despite him appearing calm and collected on the outside, he was panicking a little on the inside. Yet, he didn't let that change his mind. They'd gotten that far, why ruin it by backing out now? And it was to help him connect more with their people. It was a risk Law was willing to take.

Right after, Kureha moved over to him. But he paled at seeing a jewel-incrusted dagger in her hands. But he didn't dare move. Especially as Tsuru began to speak again. "This ceremony requires the insertion of a special jewel into the chest cavity. It's not harmful and the wound will heal immediately after due to the sun being overhead. Gloriosa, please, step forward and apply the mixture to the marked spot on Law's chest. He will be the first one since he's the outsider."

I highly doubt that the wound will heal that fast! Why does that have to be part of the ceremony?! They're going to cut me open and shove something into my chest?! Why wasn't I informed of this beforehand?! That's insane and fucking terrifying! I never agreed to this! But... I can't do anything about it now! Fuck me!

Gloriosa did just as she was instructed. He watched her slither up to him with a small bowl in her hands before she dipped two of her fingers into it. Then, she smeared a brownish paste onto his chest in the small circle that was outlined by the paint that was applied earlier. He did flinch as it touched his skin. The cool paste tingled on his skin before all feeling left that one spot after a moment or two. She rubbed it into his skin until it disappeared.

Is it supposed to numb the area? I have a feeling it does. They are, after all, about to stab me in the chest. I guess they don't want me to feel any pain. But I doubt it'll heal that fast just because we're doing it when the sun is right overhead. That isn't how this works. Plus, I don't think they have magick. That's just a myth. Magick doesn't exist. I'll have a lengthy healing process.

After it was completely rubbed into his skin, Gloriosa moved away before heading over to Zoro. However, that seemed to be the time that it was his turn. Tsuru addressed her people once more as Kureha moved to be right beside him, holding the dagger right above his chest as she waited for her time to start.

"We need to start the spell. Please, chant with us as we perform the first part of the ceremony. Everyone needs to participate for it to go well. We have taught all of you what needs to be said." He could hear murmurs of agreement from those around them. "Alright. Let us begin."

As if having done this hundreds of times before, the Echidnas around him started to chant in a language he wasn't familiar with. Though, they all did it in unison, causing a melodic sound from all their voices together. It calmed his nerves slightly but not too much.

His eyes locked onto the dagger as Kureha lifted it higher above his chest before swiftly bringing it down. Law gasped at the pressure it caused but the lack of pain from the impact. His body jolted but did nothing more. Though, he could see the blood running down the sides of his chest as Kureha yanked the blade out of his torso.

Kokoro stepped forward and handed a golden-yellow gem to Kureha. It glittered in the light of the sun that they allowed to shine through the top of the leaves. Law assumed they moved them aside at the top of the dome to have the sun beaming down to aid them in the ceremony. Kureha rolled the gem between her fingers a few times before bringing it to the hole in his chest. Then, she began to slowly insert it into the wound she just made.

Once again, he felt no pain and only pressure. Even inside his body. Law saw that as a good thing. So, he just allowed them to do what they needed. Though, he couldn't stop them even if he wanted to. His body refused to listen to him and remained completely still on the slab. And the gem was pushed right through his ribcage and placed beside his heart.

He gasped again at the pressure against his heart. But Kureha pulled back seconds later. His head spun, causing his vision to swim while they continued to chant around him. I'm going to pass out. I can't stay awake. I'm... I'm sorry. I don't have the strength to fight to stay conscious. Fucking hell. S-Sorry. Only a moment later did his consciousness fade away. Though, he had a feeling deep inside that everything would be okay regardless of whether he was conscious or not for the rest of the ceremony. He was just happy to participate in something involving the Echidna society.

Notes:

It's got a sort of supernatural twist to it. The outcome of the ceremony will take place over time. It won't happen immediately after. And those gems are special for a reason. Especially for Law. But Zoro gets one as well. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. It was fun to write. And you can see Zoro sort of show his feelings for Law. But Law's oblivious at this time. I love you wonderful people so very much and wish you a sensational day. Tatty-bye!

Fun Facts:

1. Scientists may have finally figured out why eggs come in different shapes. Apparently, it's all down to the bird's flying ability. It seems that the best fliers are the ones that lay more "pointy" or elliptical-shaped eggs while the others are more likely to lay rounded or oval-shaped eggs. (This is not something I expected to learn today. But it's understandable. The best fliers point toward the sky because it's their destiny. Others are more middle row.)

2. It is theoretically possible to travel back and forth in time. Two physicists developed a mathematical model for a time machine based on Einstein's theory of relativity, which was proven in 2015. Gravitational fields are caused by distortions in the fabric of time and space. The thing holding us back is that the technology that can physically bend this space-time fabric hasn't been invented yet. (I fear the day someone creates such technology. Humanity is greedy and not very moral at times. Changing the past isn't something we need.)

3. Scientists at Harvard have stored a GIF animation of a galloping horse in the DNA of bacteria using the Crispr-Cas9 tool. (This fascinates me. It shows how much we have advanced. But why a galloping horse? I guess it's like a cute easter egg.)

4. Scientists discovered that bees have been able to understand the concept of zero. This was proven after training the insects to count shapes, following previous research that revealed they can count to four. (Some creatures are more intelligent than we give them credit for. But it's more mindblowing that they know about zero. That means they can understand the concept of having nothing or nothing being present.)

After the Ceremony

An exaggerated gasp left him as he woke up with a start. Law shot into a sitting position before raising his hand to place it in the middle of his chest. His heart pounded rapidly in his chest due to him panicking the first moment he woke up after passing out. But his eyebrows furrowed from not finding any wound from them cutting him open. It was a shock to him since Law remembered them stabbing him with a ceremonial knife and stuffing a jewel into his chest next to his heart.

He forced his eyes open to look down to check his chest out on his own. But he was even more surprised to find only what appeared to be a small, barely noticeable scar where Kureha had stabbed him. That also allowed him to become aware of the fact that he wasn't in the ceremonial outfit anymore. Instead, he was wearing his normal bottoms, just without a shirt.

"I see you're awake now. They said that it's normal for you to pass out during the ceremony due to it being new to you. But I was still worried about you." Zoro's voice made him look up. The guy was sitting across the room from him. Law hadn't even noticed his presence. However, he saw him smiling in relief. As if Law waking up lifted a huge weight off his shoulders. But it made him feel slightly guilty for worrying him.

"S-Sorry for worrying you," he apologized. Then, he decided to ask the question that resurfaced after he calmed down. "Did... Did they do the same with you? Do... Do you have a jewel inside your chest now as well?" Law was both curious and a bit uneasy to know he had a foreign object in his body. Especially next to vital organs. Plus, his wound wasn't there anymore, making it even more unusual and mysterious.

"Yes, I do. They put one in my chest as well. But it was necessary for them to do so. In their minds, you are now an official part of our society. Albeit, a distant part of it but still a member." Law smiled, a little happy to hear that. Yet, it still didn't make much sense as to why they had to do something so drastic just for him to be a part of their people. "But I'm glad you went along with it. Especially because of how intimate the ceremony is. You really are the best friend I never thought I would ever have."

Law's cheeks heated up to a light red again as he looked away. Particularly when he saw the big grin on Zoro's face as he said that. It caused butterflies to flutter in his stomach before flying into his throat. "Y-Yeah." He cringed inwardly when he stuttered. But he didn't dare acknowledge his embarrassment. Plus, he knew the guy would tease him if he noticed something out of the ordinary.

"Anyway, are you okay? Does it hurt anywhere on your body? Is there any pain in your chest? Is it hard to breathe?" Law chuckled at Zoro's inquiries about how he felt at the time. It was super sweet but not something he hadn't expected. However, he was thankful to have Zoro there to worry about him. Plus, he needed someone close to him to care about him after something like that happened to him.

"I feel fine. Good even. I don't feel any pain anywhere, my chest is okay and doesn't hurt, and breathing is quite easy. But... I wasn't expecting the wound to be healed already. How is that possible? It shouldn't be since it defies logic." Law still couldn't wrap his head around that aspect of the ceremony. Especially when it shouldn't have been humanly possible. Not even for their kind.

Zoro smiled before chuckling at his question and comments on the subject. As if it were amusing to him. "It's just part of the ceremony. You can call it magick or whatever, but I'm not even sure how it's able to heal so fast. I guess it has something to do with them being the elders. I'm not entirely sure. But I guess it's better that you're healed than not, right?"

"You're... You're not wrong there. But it's still a little odd to me." Law chuckled back at him. "But I'm happy that we're okay and nothing went wrong. And I hope that jewel doesn't become a problem in the future. It's going to be hard to explain if I have to get an X-ray of my chest. Hopefully, that never has to happen." He was going to be very uncomfortable if he had to explain why there was a foreign object in his chest cavity. Plus, his father was already going to be worried since he'd been gone for so long.

"Yeah, I agree with you. Let's hope that never happens." For the time being, Law and Zoro talked to each other about their views on the ceremony. He found out that Zoro hadn't fainted like him. And that made him a bit self-conscious. His friend assured him that it was normal since Law wasn't used to their society or even way of life. So, things like that were going to freak him out.

After a little while of them chatting with one another, Kokoro entered the hut. She was, of course, drunk but obviously very happy to see him awake. "Law, dearie, you're awake. I'm so happy to see you up and about. I hope we didn't scare you too much, hun. I understand it was a very intense situation, but I hope it hasn't traumatized you. We weren't trying to do anything like that. But I assume you're doing okay, right?" Her words slurred a bit as she spoke, but Law could understand her perfectly.

"Yes. I promise I'm okay. And you don't need to worry about me. I'm not going to let that get to me. I can promise you that. I'll be fine. Trust me. I just hope this doesn't cause any issues in the future. Especially if I have to get an X-ray for some reason." He had told them about the medical practices humans had developed over the years. X-rays were one of them. But he was willing to share in case they ever decided to use those methods.

Kokoro waved her hand dismissively while chuckling, clearly amused. "Don't worry about them finding the jewel. It had already melted and adhered to your heart. The only thing they'll notice that's different is the casing around your heart from the jewel fusing with it." Law's eyes widened, and his jaw dropped at the mention of the jewel creating a casing around his heart.

"Wh-Wha... What? A... A casing around my heart?" That was news to him. Especially because he had no idea what the ceremony really was about and why they performed it. Even Zoro couldn't be too sure as to what the outcome of the ceremony was. So, both of them were practically in the dark on the whole thing.

The elder Echidna laughed aloud at his obvious surprise and bewilderment. But she answered his question after she calmed her laughter down to just chuckles. "The jewels we gave both of you and the ceremony we performed have linked both of you together. You," she pointed at Law, "will live as long as Zoro does and stop aging when you hit a certain age. And both of you boys will be able to tell if the other is on the brink of death." Law couldn't believe what he was hearing. "The casing the jewel has created will also allow you to be immune to just about every disease and illness in this world. But don't think it will work every time."

"So, I'm practically immortal." It was something that had always seemed an impossible feat for humans. But they appeared to be able to have something akin to immortality. Even if they lived for hundreds or even thousands of years, they still lived far longer than humans did. So, it's practically immortality to humankind.

"Not exactly in the sense you might be thinking about. Yes, your life expectancy will extend far beyond that of any human in the world. But physical injuries will still kill you if they are severe enough. Sicknesses will not be a problem, and you are highly unlikely to contract any diseases. Meaning you are somewhat immortal. Not fully. And you will die of old age at some point. So, there's that as well." Law nodded, accepting her explanation. "Just don't go thinking you're invincible or anything because you aren't."

"Yes, ma'am. I understand." Law found this news both exciting and terrifying at the same time. Yet, it was sad as well. It meant that he would outlive everyone in his life other than Zoro. But he couldn't reverse the ceremony. He'd gone along with it right beside his best friend. Now, Law was going to have to live with the fact that he would have to watch everyone he knew, even his future family, pass away due to old age while he remained the same.

"Good. Now, when you're ready, you should head back to your father soon. I'm sure he's super worried about you. Especially since you were gone far longer than he expected you to be. So, it's only fair for you to return to him. You and Zoro can spend more time with each other after a week." Law gave her a questioning look. "Don't think we don't know how long you and your father stay in the area. It's summer, correct? You two stay, at least, eight weeks out here. It's only been two or three by now."

"Kokoro, you know it's kind of creepy when you guys know his schedule along with his father's, right?" Zoro voiced with a hint of annoyance in his tone. "I understood that it's to keep an eye on them. But it's a little unnerving that you guys know so much about their routine. You guys need to back off a bit. Just so you don't seem like you're stalking them."

Law chuckled at Zoro's words to the older Echidna. But Kokoro just crackled along with him. It was obvious she found it funny as well. He didn't blame her since she was obviously drunk, and Zoro was pointing out some very concerning aspects of what they'd been doing. But, in reality, Law didn't mind at all. He found it kind of endearing that they watched over him and his father, despite them not liking humans.

After a few more minutes of them chit-chatting, Law got up and decided to get dressed to return to his father. Though, it did pain him a little to see the disappointed look on Zoro's face. However, he knew he had to go back to keep his father from panicking due to his absence far exceeding what he'd planned for. So, of course, his father would be very worried. And he didn't want to cause his father to have a heart attack or panic attack.

Once he had his shirt and shoes on, Zoro helped him gather his things and pack them back into his backpack and the cooler he brought with him. But Law noticed the other's touch lingering a bit on his hands whenever they would accidentally touch. As if he were trying to tell Law something without words. However, he couldn't figure out what the other was attempting to say by his touch.

"You'll come back after a week, right? Your father will allow you to come back then, right?" The desperation in Zoro's voice made Law look up to see his friend desperately pleading with his eyes for him to tell him it was true. And it tugged at his heartstrings to see the Echidna nearly begging him to tell him that he would be back to visit in a week. So, he smiled at him. A genuine smile to reassure Zoro.

"Of course, I'll be back in a week. And I'm fairly sure my dad will allow me to come back after that time. I just hope he isn't too worried about me being gone for so long. I don't want him to freak out. But I promise to be back after a week. Okay?" He held out his hand to Zoro, offering a handshake to make the promise official.

Zoro stared at his hand for a second before a grin spread across his face. Then, he took Law's hand and shook it. "Okay. Deal. But you'd better bring some of those delicious snacks I like. It'll be a real shame if you didn't bring me some after promising me last time." Law chuckled at his comment about the snacks his friend loved so much.

"Alright. I'll see if Dad kept some around while I was gone. But you have to share with me." Zoro agreed, and Law headed back to his father's current campsite. A small, female Echidna guided him out of the community area. But she warned him that he was only allowed there if Zoro was present. Law agreed and promised not to visit unless invited or he was with the male Echidna. However, he chuckled silently at catching her a few times stealing glances at him with sparkles in her eyes. As if she found him fascinating.

I hope Dad isn't too upset with me. I did, after all, disappear for a few weeks and only texted him instead of calling. But I was able to gather a lot of data for their kind and a few snakes that came into the hut with me a couple of times. So, I didn't return empty-handed. I just need to keep the information about the Echidnas a secret. I'm glad I got to be a part of that ceremony. Though, I'm still a little put off by it. I just hope that things don't go awry. I don't need to have any problems regarding this new situation I'm in.

Law sighed heavily as he hiked his way back to his father's camp, ready to share his snake data with the older man while he shared his Echidna data with Law. But he looked forward to seeing Zoro again after a week, since they didn't spend a lot of time together due to the Echidna being injured and unable to wake up for a while. So, he needed to spend as much time as he could when he returned to hang out with Zoro.

Notes:

Had to put a bit of fantasy in with some realism. I mean, Echidnas (the ones from mythology) aren't logical or real anyway. But Law's a little confused by what's going on with Zoro. Yet, he's still looking forward to spending more time with his friend. I love all of you spectacular beings so so so much and wish you a fantastic day. Tatty-bye!

Fun Facts:

Some more facts about me.

1. I experience cultural shock in my own culture. My grandmother invited my sister and me over to her house when I was four and my sister was 6. She gave us a piece of meat and told us to eat it. However, she didn't tell us what it was before we ate it. After eating the piece of meat, she informed us that it was rabbit. My sister and I started crying before she threw up, and we ran home. This hit us so hard because we had a pet bunny at the time. We thought my grandmother fed us our pet rabbit. Just to be clear, Jasper, our bunny, was perfectly fine. But that really messed us up for a while.

2. I retain what I consider "unimportant information". I could tell you the most random things that are of no importance to anyone. But when I try to remember important things, it's more difficult for me. I hate this and struggle with it every day. Hell, I'll even forget my personal hygiene by accident.

3. I can multitask when at home without a problem, but when I'm at work, I can't do it because I consider it a stressful environment. Also, I forget things far more easily when at work than at home. I guess that's a product of stress as well.

4. I have a notebook filled with different story ideas. I'm up to (I think) 190 ideas. I do use them very often when making new stories. I mark them off the list once I start on the first chapter of the story associated with the idea. That's how dedicated I am to my stories.

Evacuation

Screams of terror echoed in the distance as Law and his father set up for the few weeks they would be out there once again. They shared a look for a moment. Then, Law paled as he realized whose voices those were. "D-Dad?" he stuttered out, wondering what they were supposed to do. Fear and worry gripped him like a vice.

"Get the truck ready for transport. We're going to have to cut this visit short and leave earlier than expected. And with many more people than we previously planned for." Law did as he was told and got the pop-up containers ready for transport. They could hold up to ten people, and there were five of them. However, Law knew they wouldn't be able to fit all of them in one go. Just enough to transport to the airport before returning to collect more.

Law had everything set up in record speed. He knew what was going on, and it devastated him greatly. Especially after becoming friends with them and spending more time with them in the past eight years. Yes, Law was twenty-four now. He had gathered so much data on the Echidnas that it rivaled his own father's collected data.

Two years before, his father had accidentally found out about him spending time with them. It didn't upset his father. Instead, he encouraged Law to continue to do so while he kept his secret. That made Law feel better. However, something was wrong this time. Something terrible was happening near their home.

After a few minutes of them waiting, the Echidnas began to run toward them out of the trees and bushes. Law's eyes widened at seeing them. But he just ushered them into the containers to save their lives. They didn't question him and did as they were told. More and more came running, terror written all over their faces. It made him feel even worse.

However, he was watching and waiting for a particular one. Through the bond, he could sense that Zoro was fine and unharmed at the time. But that didn't quell his worry about his friend. Especially because he wasn't sure what was happening near their home. But he was able to find out when the ones huddled inside one of the containers began to speak.

"They've never dared to come that far into the jungle before," one female said, clearly in hysterics as she bawled her eyes out. Law felt a pang of guilt at the obvious trauma this was causing all of them. Yet, his heart tightened when he couldn't spot Zoro.

"They destroyed the place. They took away our home. How could they do that? We haven't harmed anyone. We're homeless now," another sobbed as she clung to another Echidna. However, Law continued to watch for one particular member of their society. He needed to know if he would show up or not. Law feared he would be caught in whatever was happening at their home.

After another ten minutes of them sprinting out of the jungle and rushing over to them to be saved, his fears immediately died down when he saw Zoro emerge from the brush. Law waved him over, hoping that the male Echidna would be able to answer the many questions buzzing around in his head. Especially because the others seemed to be too hysterical to explain it properly.

When the guy hurried over to him, Law wasn't expecting Zoro to immediately wrap his arms around his neck. "Are you okay? Have you gotten hurt?" The male Echidna's sudden fretting over his person was new to Law. Especially when it should've been him asking those questions instead of Zoro. However, he couldn't help but find it endearing as well.

"I... I'm fine. I promise I am. What about you? What happened? Is everyone alright?" Law needed to know what was going on at their home. Plus, he worried about what would happen after this. Especially because he had a nagging feeling that his father would take them home to the facility they'd been creating in case something happened.

Zoro brought him in for a tight hug and buried his face into his shoulder. "The camp... It's gone. They destroyed it. A group of humans began to destroy it with large machines, saying they were making room for future projects. We gathered the most important things before fleeing. The elders insisted we come here, knowing you and your father would be willing to help us." Law nodded as he wrapped his arms around the other's back to reciprocate the hug. "I'm glad to see you okay. I was afraid they spotted you."

"I'm relieved you're okay. You don't need to worry about me," Law shot back, feeling more concerned about the other than Zoro needed to be about him. "You're the one who lost his home. I was worried out of my mind when I didn't see you at first. But I'm so happy to see you alive and well. I'm so sorry about your home. None of you deserves this." He buried his face into the man's shoulder as well.

For a few minutes, they just hugged each other tightly. But they parted after a bit to help the others gather into the containers. However, they filled up quickly due to how many there were. His father got into the truck and promised to be back to gather more. He asked Law to stay behind to make sure nothing happened. Zoro promised to take care of everyone. Even Law.

While his father thanked Zoro before he drove away to take the first batch to the airport, he and Zoro began to round up the ones left and still coming out of the jungle. Law was relieved to see all of the elders there as well. Every single Echidna had a backpack made of large, sturdy leaves on their backs. He knew they were full of important things from their community.

Zoro stayed glued to his side as they made sure everyone was okay and unharmed. Most were crying their eyes out while others tried to comfort them with hugs and pats on the back. Law felt guilty for all of their despair at having their home destroyed, uprooting their lives. He even apologized to them. But that ended up with all of them assuring him it wasn't his fault at all. Even the elders said the same thing.

I know I'm not responsible for other people's actions in the least, but I can't help but feel somewhat accountable and guilty that they've lost their home because of my kind. It's unfair to them. They've done nothing for humans to invade their home. And they've been living in that same area for centuries. What the hell is wrong with humans? I hate this. I despise some of the members of my race. They're terrible people.

Zoro wrapped his arms around him again from behind before laying his head on Law's back. It surprised him for a second before he looked over his shoulder to see how the male Echidna was doing. Though, he understood that his friend needed some comforting since he almost lost the others of his community along with his home.

After making sure everyone was unharmed in any way and accounted for other than the ones his father had already taken away, Law relaxed even more than before. It made him feel better to have everyone together than for any of them to be left behind. The elders even rattled off everyone's names to make sure they were all there or being transported by his father.

While they waited for his father, Dr. Trafalgar, to return to gather more so he could take them to the airport, Zoro made Law sit down in his lap while sitting on a nearby rock. Taking a deep, calming breath, Law sagged against the male Echidna as he tried to feel better about the situation since everyone was there and safe. However, he couldn't help but have this guilt and sad feeling due to them losing just about everything they held dear and worked for after centuries of being alive.

As he sat in Zoro's lap, the man nuzzled the back of his neck while holding him close to his chest. He chuckled at the obvious affections his friend was lavishing upon him. Yet, it felt a little more intimate than their usual friendship. It caused something to flutter in his chest as he placed his hands on top of Zoro's and patted them gently.

What is this feeling I'm having right now? It feels... kinda fuzzy and warm. I don't understand. Dad, would you know what's going on? And why do I feel this way toward Zoro? Mom, might you know if Dad doesn't? I'm a little curious now. What's with this feeling in my chest? I don't hate it. It's just... unusual to me. I... I kind of like it. Is that weird?

"You smell as nice as always," Zoro voiced as he nuzzled the back of his neck some more. A smile rose to Law's lip as he chuckled at the man's comment about his scent. "What? It's true. Like cinnamon and vanilla mixed with grass. It's really pleasant despite the strange combination."

"It's good to know you like my scent so much. Though, I don't do anything to smell like any of those. I guess it's just my natural scent." Zoro agreed. But he felt a little awkward when the Echidna began to subtly rub circles on his stomach through his shirt. However, he didn't stop him. Law just rubbed his thumbs across the man's hands.

After a bit, Law's father returned, and more Echidnas were loaded into the containers to be transported. The elders remained behind to help the other members safely enter the pods. Law and Zoro helped as well since they were worried about all of them. During the time his father was away, he informed the elders about the facility he and his father had put together, just in case something such as this happened.

"I'm not surprised your father has set up something for us as a precaution," Kureha responded with a smile on her face. Law nodded, knowing they were all well aware of his father's research into them. "But I have a feeling you helped him when it came to specifics using the data you've collected over the years spending time with us."

Law's face turned bright red as he looked away from her in embarrassment and slight shame. "W-Well... I... I wanted it to be as close to your home as possible. Of course, we weren't able to replicate every single detail about your home due to not having the original materials or even knowing the specific methods you have when building things. But we tried our best and got it as close to how your old home is as possible. We hope it's up to your standards. But I apologize for sharing information after promising not to."

Tsuru reached out and placed a firm hand on his shoulder. She smiled at him as well. A warm, genuine smile. "Law, you don't need to apologize. We're very thankful that you and your father have come up with a plan in case we lose our home. I promise you that having a home that's not exactly the same as the last is better than having no home at all. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and care towards us. We're glad to call you a part of our society. You protect us even though you're not one of us. That's something we will always cherish."

His eyes widened at her words as a pleasant, different kind of warmth filled his chest again. The other elders nodded in agreement with their fellow member. Zoro placed a hand on his other shoulder, giving it a firm squeeze. That made him feel even more welcomed into their society than he had ever been before. Especially with the changes his body had been going through for the past eight years.

The other Echidnas around them smiled and agreed with them as well. A few of the younger-looking Echidnas confessed that they saw him as their big brother due to his aura and the brotherly affection he showed toward them when interacting. That made him feel a bit flustered as his face flushed with a bright red blush. Zoro chuckled and teased him a bit about it.

I really am a part of their society, aren't I? Though, I'm very wary to tell them about the changes I've noticed about my body over the years. Will they have a logical explanation for them? Or will this be something even they aren't aware of? Is it due to the ceremony Zoro and I went through eight years ago? Could the jewel that was placed in my chest be responsible for the changes? If so, should I be worried about it? I really need to confide in the elders at some point when Zoro isn't around. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to have him there to hear about it when I speak to them.

With a semi-plan formed in his mind to speak to the elders alone when he got the chance to do so, Law just chatted with everyone, helping them calm down and feel a bit better about their situation. He even informed them of the different meals they would provide for them to eat if they wanted, or the ingredients they could obtain if they wanted something specific. That cheered them up a bit more, making things less stressful and more relaxed.

Notes:

Things are changing and situations are arising. I'll touch more on the 'changes' that Law's noticed about himself. But I think some of you have ideas of what that could mean. I love all of you so very much and wish you a magnificent day. Tatty-bye!

Fun Facts:

1. Male lions sleep for 20 hours a day. (That's no different from a house cat. They sleep around the same amount of time. Maybe even more.)

2. You could remove the stomach, the spleen, one kidney, 80% of the intestines, and 75% of the liver and still be able to survive. (The human body is very resilient. You'd be surprised at how much we can handle before giving out.)

3. Your brain makes seemingly conscious decisions 7 seconds before you are consciously aware of them. (That means your brain knows your answer before even you do. That's kind of creepy.)

4. Even small noises cause the pupils of the eye to dilate. (This doesn't surprise me. We're hotwired into reacting to things around us. So, nosies, no matter how small they are, will cause us to react.)

Notes:

This was a request from a friend. And I like the idea of snake people. I looked up what half-human, half-snake people were called. In Greek mythology, they were called Echidnas. Yes, just like the animal. But I'm using the mythological definition. Sorry if it makes you think of the animal at first. Also, I chose Zoro because he's already green like a snake. It fits him perfectly. I love all of you so so so very very very much and wish you a stupendous day. Tatty-bye!

Fun Facts:

1. Chocolate milk was invented in Jamaica. (I wouldn't doubt it. And that's awesome. Such an exotic place for a simple and loved beverage.)

2. 37% of the web is porn. (And I add to it with my stories. So, that's fun. But it's not surprising. Though, I was expecting a higher percentage.)

3. Your body is actually designed to get 4 hours of sleep twice per day instead of 8 hours at once. (And I find that perfectly fine. I sleep around 4-6 every night and take a 2-3 hour nap during the day. So, I guess I'm doing it right.)

4. The most children born to one woman was 69. Before dying at the age of 40, she had 16 sets of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets. (That's too many babies for one person. Was she popping them out every year like Big Mom was? That's still way too many in general.)
