----Short 1------
(A Rainy Day is best for comfort <3)
The soft pattering of rain outside and the damp but comforting smell sneaking it's way in through the open window reminded Shen Yuan of the downpour. The soft rhythmic sound was sort of comforting, steady like a heartbeat , And it carried the memories of lingering warmth, Reminding him of simpler days when Shen Jiu would shield him from the rain, storm , cold , or the slave drivers who would bang outside their rotting wooden door and demand pay in the nastiest of ways. Shen Jiu would protect him from them, would whisper soothing words and manage to scare the slave drivers away. But now they were strong--- they were peak lords, even now Shen Jiu would still open the door for him when he was at his lowest state or help him in some sort of way. In a way, they were together, and the only thing they could trust was the two of them. The sound of a steady knock on his door drove him out of his thoughts. And he cautiously opened the door with a wary look on his face until he saw a familiar white silk fan and he relaxed instantly, It was his brother, Shen jiu. Shen Jiu scoffed at the relaxed look on his brothers face but a small smile crept to his face and he scoffed '' that bastard Liu Qingge punched a hole in my hut. '' Shen Jiu glided past Shen Yuan with ease, dropping a basket of his favourite sweets on the counter. '' thanks , ge.'' Shen Yuan replied with a soft smile. Shen Jiu simply let out a soft sigh and moved to survey the rack overflowing with scrolls of various mythical beasts and scholarly articles, Picking one and settling down onto the daybed , Shen Jiu scans the words on the scroll intently. And Shen Yuan surveys him for a while before speaking '' are you using me as an excuse to avoid Liu Qingge?''
Shen Jiu nods, disappointed that he couldn't keep his motive a secret, and grumbles '' That Liu Brute keeps dropping dead animals at my door out of spite, and this time that brute stepped it up a level by asking me to go night hunting with him. In the rain. Surely he invited me to compete with him. ''
Shen Yuan watches his brother with an amused expression on his face, entertained by the fact that his brother was such an airhead at times '' are you sure Liu Qingge is doing this out of spite?''
Shen Jiu shoots him a glare and reclines further into the day bed. Shen Yuan joins him and they spend the rainy day reading together, and catching up , 'This is why rainy days are best spent with family.' Shen Yuan thinks drowsily, before dozing off.

Notes:
so, the modern world I imagine is that Shen Yuan was sick as a child, and struggles with anxiety and fear of abandonment due to his parents leaving them behind but I have decided not to mention this traumatic aspect cause then I'll just ruin the fluff time I'm writing this down to set the background plot , Shen Jiu is his older brother who supports his brother and himself by working and Luo Binghe is the same age as Shen Yuan.
Chapter Text
Reading web novels is addicting, but it's hard for Shen Yuan to read when a starry-eyed youth is peering over his shoulder. Alright, this was his fault, he always goes soft-hearted for anyone who seems alone like him. he couldn't help it. Not when he was walking by and saw the youth sitting alone in the cafeteria, his dark eyes flitted towards him and then his heart went soft for this youth from the very first time they met- wait, I'm not a plot maiden! I don't fall into anyone's arms! Let me get this straight, me and this youth called Luo Binghe have been sitting together during lunchtime because we both need it. The company. It turns out that Binghe is in a similar situation to mine. He's surprisingly sweet and struggles to make friends, so that's why I decided to sit next to him because honestly, I felt the same. Plus, reading web novels alone at lunch makes a bad impression. The problem is, my brother, Shen Jiu- doesn't approve of this poor white lotus, what did this cabbage do to him?! I huff and decide to instead focus on my lunch tray. Binghe switched out my usual instant noodles for something healthier like congee.
He never tells me which section he finds the congee in for some reason. I would ask him but I'm nervous he'll leave me for rudely asking. I can't help but overthink, I fiddle with my sleeve and Binghe reaches out and touches my arm briefly in concern, My wondering thoughts instantly return to me and lower a notch down, I feel safe in Binghe's presence, the rest of lunch is spent chatting and slowly opening up to each other. I return home, and Shen Jiu is making some soup for us in the kitchen having returned early from his class, he's in year twelve and about to graduate, and I'm still stuck in high school in year 10. it's the little moments and experiences like this that fill the hole from my childhood spent inside due to my sickly constitution. I'm just glad I am more healthy and strong now, and that I can have a normal teenage life without hospital beds and the scent of pristine antiseptic filling my nose.
I set the table, and we sit down, after a meal in comfortable silence I grab a remote and a bowl of chips, Shen Jiu works tirelessly to support us and our school tuition, so It's not every day he returns home early. I would like him to relax, so I decided to switch to a David Attenborough documentary, smiling at the monkeys on the TV and interesting facts about the critter. It is our favourite show to watch when destressing from school and work. Shen Jiu lets a faint smile play on his lips as we sit together, and let the TV sounds and images envelop us and let us forget about the world, just the two of us like always, just for a moment.
