Pick your battles wisely

Summary:

It might be romantic to go against the old saying of 'pick your battles carefully'

Because if you don't well, you have a thing coming to you real soon......

Don't believe me? Well then let me tell the story that will leave you in no more doubt that doing otherwise would be a very bad idea.

Notes:

This work is inspired by a certain scene in the Fontaine AQ that works great as an emotional moment but becomes completely nonsensical the moment you think about it logically. This work was born from the desire to showcase how bad of an impulse decision making he made then was.

Work Text:

In the world of professional fighting, who can fight who is strictly regulated. A fighter cannot freely challenge and fight another without making sure that regulatory requirements are met for it to go ahead. These can include ranking, venue, prize money agreements, and others. But one concern trumps all: weight difference. It might be a great story for a smaller fighter to fight and win over a bigger fighter, but the reality is such things are unrealistic and dangerous to do due to our physiology. And so such fights are strictly prohibited from taking place, in acknowledge publicly sanctioned fights that is…..

Yes, as with all things in life if it’s regulated publicly there will be those who exploit those who want to do things outside the regulations and do things underground. These fighting circles are set up and then operated under their own rules not in any way compliance with regulations. Most of the time the only concern is money, and so whatever fights can generate the most money so be it any other concerns be damned. Even despite that however most fighters who partake in these circles still carefully pick their fights, after all they still want to win so better to pick opponents that they have the biggest chance of beating to accomplish that.

But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t those who ignore such considerations and fight anyone just for the sake of it. They certainly exist but they’re far and few in-between because well, things usually don’t end well for them. Don’t believe me? Well here’s a story that exemplifies why that is for you then…….

…………………………………………………………………………………………………

It was a night in a sketchy part of town, within the confines of an old dimly lit warehouse a fighting ring had been set up. the accommodations are spartan to say the least. But that doesn’t deter anyone within the crowd and organizer from being eager to see the night events to be underway. These folks are as you might expect for that part of town the sketchy types, the kinds you’d rather not bump into while out and about.

Regardless of all that they settle in for the night’s fight event. One of these fights is one of intrigue and curiosity. Wriothesley, a mountain of a man who is a veteran of these underground circles with the scars and bulk to show for it. Up against Lyney, a petite young man whose smooth pale skin shows that he is not at all experienced in this rough world of fighting. There are many possibilities of how such a seemingly uneven fight could come to be, but none of that matters to the crowd as all they see is the easiest betting decision in their life. As both ready themselves in the ring it became clear that the overwhelming majority was betting for Wriothesley to win easily.

Sensing this he sent a half-serious half mocking offer to his opponent across the ring.

“Hey kiddo, you could still back out of this you know? Everyone here knows you will lose, save yourself the embarrassment”

His opponent however seemed undeterred and eager despite being in the face of massive odds against him.

“You think I care about any of that? All i care for is to bring out my best when it’s time to fight!”

Some fighting words indeed, eh? With that exchange it seems like the fight will go ahead with no interruptions needed, soon all the bets are counted in and afterwards the fighters are ready to begin. And so with that begin it did.

DING

The bell rang and both fighters approached each other at centre ring, it didn’t take long to find out who would take the first initiative in the fight.

“HHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!”

 BAM BAM POW POW

Lyney Without hesitation launches a barrage of punches and kicks at Wriothesley sending attacks all over his body, you certainly have to give it to him for having such intense tenacity. However, the crowd could immediately notice something was up. Wriothesley seemed unbothered by the attacks, in fact he seemed to let it all land on him while saying put not making any movements. After what seemed to be quite a long while Lyney stopped his attacks and pulled back, taking deep breaths he probably thought he had done his opponent major damage. Unfortunately for him and as the crowd has come to suspect this is not the case, in fact it was the opposite.

“Mwahahahaha”

“What?!”

“I’ll give it to you kiddo, you have some technique and tenacity. However, I’m sorry to say that is all in vain”

“No no no, it can’t be!”

“Oh yes it can kiddo, you’re about to find out what would happen if you don’t pick your fights wisely”

With those menacing words Wriothesley advanced on Lyney poised to strike, Lyney tried to step away from him while cowering behind his guard. But it made no difference, Wriothesley closed in on him in no time. And then….

WHACK WHACK WHAM WAHM

With no difficulty Wriothesley power through Lyney’s guard shattering it and landing power blow after power blows all over Lyney’s body. It wasn’t as fast as Lyney’s barrage but it sure as hell was a lot more powerful as he throws his opponent around like a ragdoll. Lyney could feel that he was in trouble and that he could stand Wriothesley's attacks no longer. In last-ditch effort he deliberately falls forwards and catches Wriothesley in a clinch, a good method to stop a barrage and catch yourself a moment of rest. At least it would be normally, little did he know he had just sealed his fate.

Wriothesley did stop his barrage but it was only for a moment to snicker at what his opponent had done, then came the finishing act……

SWOOSH

THUD

In one swift move Wriothesley with almost no effort at all lifted Lyney up into the air, before the shock Lyney could do anything to react Wriothesley brought him right back down over his back in a suplex maneuver. Lyney landed hard on the canvas and immediately it’s apparent he’s done for as his grip on Wriothesley loosened and he slumped over completely limp. As Wriothesley got up after finishing the move he turned to see his opponent now lying on the canvas completely unconscious, he quickly concluded that there was no need to continue the beating since now the end result had presented itself. He makes one glance at the organizers at ringside and they soon confirm his decision.

DING DING DING

The final bell rang and with the roar of the crowd behind him Wriothesley left the ring in a victorious pose satisfied with himself over his work that night. All the while leaving poor Lyney lying completely knocked out senseless in the ring having found out why even in these circles you can’t just challenge anyone.
