Chapter 5: THE RACE IS ON!

Chapter Text

A couple of days later, the race between 5 and Broderick was in full swing. Sally, Rerun, 3, and 4 were in attendance, as were Broderick's buddies Nick and Tom. Broderick was dressed in a burgundy jogging suit, while 5 was clad in light blue running shorts and a cropped tee. Much of the Birchwood student body were there to watch the race. Also in attendance was Snoopy, who agreed to act as referee to start and end the race.

"You ready, sissy?!" asked Broderick.

"You know it, Broderick!" 5 responded.

"Get ready for me to wipe you in this race, 'Mary'!" And both boys got on their marks. Snoopy then held up a green flag. When he dropped it and blew the whistle, the race was on. Broderick ran past 5 at first, but 5 kept a steady running pace.

"Good grief!" said Rerun. "Broderick has a nice lead!"

"Beat him, 5!" cheered Sally. The boys continued to race. As they made the second lap, Broderick was starting to lose steam.

"Broderick is slowing down!" cried 3.

"YOU GOT THIS, BRO!" cheered 4. 5 continued to keep a steady pace, never slowing down or speeding up. By the third and final lap, Broderick was literally crawling around the track. 5 had taken the lead.

"He's winning!" yelled Tom. "Come on Broderick! Beat the fairy!"

"Oh will you shut up, Tom?!" growled Nick. "5 isn't a bad guy at all!"

"What's with you, Nick?!" wondered Tom. "Why are you defending that sissy?!"

"Because maybe I'm gay, too!" yelled Nick.

"Say WHAT?!"

And 5 made it to the finish line. Snoopy waved the checkered flag. And everyone went to congratulate 5 on his victory.

"You did it, 5!" cheered 3. "You did it!"

"I'm so proud of you!" added 4.

Sally went up and hugged 5. "You did it! You beat that blockhead Broderick!"

At that moment, Broderick, panting and wheezing, made it over to the crowd.

"I… want… a… rematch, …sissy!" he panted.

"Sure, but you better be in better shape than what you are now!" joked 5.

Tom stormed up to Broderick. "5 isn't the only sissy here!" he fumed.

"What… are you… talking about, …Tom?" gasped Broderick.

"Our very own Nick, freaking gay as a three-dollar bill, himself!"

"This isn't my day."

"Broderick, I never said anything before," fumed Nick, "but yes, I too am gay. And how you've been treating 5 was insane. I'm glad he beat your fat butt in this race!"

"Okay, he beat me fair and square, I admit it!" yelled Broderick. "I'll leave HIM alone, but you are about to receive a knuckle sandwich!" And Broderick tried to throw a punch, only for Nick to duck and deliver a blow to his gut. Broderick doubled over in pain.

"This 'sissy' can still kick your butt, you blockhead!" sneered Nick. And he joined up with 5 and the rest.

"Hey 5," Nick began, "if you're not busy this weekend, you want to go to Joe's and maybe a movie?"

"Nick, are you asking me out on a date?" asked a bewildered 5.

"I am," said Nick, with a smile. "Let's see where this goes."

"Meet me at my house at noon," said 5.

"Okay, it's a date. See you then." And Nick walked away, but not before looking back at 5 with a smile.

"I think you just scored a date, 5," said Sally. And everyone cheered 5 for not only being victorious in the race, but even scoring a date with, of all people, Broderick's now former goon Nick. 5 then knew he was going to be fine thanks to the support of his sisters and friends.
