Chapter 1: Prince Yuuichirou
Chapter Text
“Your highness, you're expected in the meeting hall after breakfast.”
The voice was muffled by the door but it was also loud enough to wake Yuuichirou up. He started, his head lifting suddenly before he paused there for a few moments, beginning to fall back to doze back off. What woke him up was the loud knock on the door before it opened, sending Yuu up into a sitting position in surprise. Green eyes blinked tiredly at the man standing in wait in front of his bed, yawning.
The man looked unimpressed as he watched the young boy stretch and wake up. The man laying in wait for the boy was Kimizuki Shihou, known for his short temper, which was shorter than his pink hair, as well as how calculating he was. Pinkish eyes were usually covered with glasses resting over his eyes.
Kimizuki looked irritated. He usually did when he was around Yuuichirou. Honestly, Yuuichirou didn't think he was that much of a handful. Yoichi never complained about it. But then again, Kimizuki had to deal with Yuuichirou all hours of the day, being his second hand man. Yoichi was just one of his servants.
“Preferably today, Your Highness,” Kimizuki stated, inclining Yuuichirou to wake up faster.
Grunting, Yuuichirou threw his blankets off to the side and ran his hands through his mess of black hair with another yawn before he slid out of his most inviting bed. He was tempted to crawl back into it and ignore the annoying man at the foot of his bed. But last time he did that, he was literally dragged out of his bed by his feet and taken to the bath by force. So, the boy thought it best to listen to him this time. He did, however, take his time stretching out and standing around.
“Kimizuki, do I have enough time to bathe before breakfast?” Yuuichirou asked, dropping his hands down to his sides.
Turning his head towards the window, he smiled a little bit. It was definitely a nice day to be outside instead of having another meeting with his father. Standing around in the garden was definitely much more appealing than sitting at a large table. But the clouds further beyond the horizon told him it was going to rain. A heavy rain, it seemed like.
“About an hour in the bath should give you enough time to eat and be in the meeting hall in time. If not, I'm sure Lord Guren will allow you to eat there.” the butler informed.
“It's alright, I can miss a breakfast. It won't kill me, just give my portion to someone else.”
“Your Highness-”
“It's fine, Kimizuki. I just want a bath and a bun to eat.” Yuuichirou sighed, stepping away from his bed before he was lead by the irritated butler towards the bath.
Yuuichirou could tell he was irritated by the way Kimizuki's jaw would work and he looked like he wanted to say something further but Kimizuki would rather not risk doing so. Yuuichirou found it amusing as he followed after him, stepping onto the cool stone floor of the bath. The black-haired prince shooed Kimizuki off before shutting the door. Looking over at the already filled tub, the steam rolling off the water in waves before disappearing somewhere above. It looked incredibly inviting to Yuuichirou.
Stepping forward, he undressed himself from his night wear and moved to step in. He sank down into the water and closed his eyes with a relaxed sigh, tilting his head back against the edge. Letting the warm water soak into his tired body, he slowly opened his eyes and turned his head to look over at the mirror across from the bath, frowning at the state his hair was in. He quickly fixed that by ducking his head under water and running his hands through it. Afterwards, he relaxed again, allowing himself to think.
His father probably wanted to speak to him about his engagement to one of the Four Demons from the country of Aranis. Yuuichirou hadn't bothered to remember her name, figuring as how he would decline the offer--politely of course. Yuuichirou didn't want to marry. Guren didn't have to when he claimed the throne, so why did the young prince have to? It sounded like too much work on top of what he already would have to do as King. Not to mention, keeping peace with Na'lian Empire would be difficult. The Tepes family wasn't exactly friendly and he heard that their prince, Mikaela Tepes, rarely spoke to anyone. He was known as The “Mute” Prince.
Yuuichirou wondered if he'd ever get to meet the Queen or Prince Mikaela. They certainly seemed like interesting people, maybe they would get along?
“Hah... Get along with the 'mute' Prince? There's a goal you'll never achieve,” Yuuichirou scolded himself, shaking his head.
Sitting up, he started lathering himself with soap, scrubbing at his dark skin. He made sure to scrub every part of himself and rinse thoroughly before moving onto his hair. If he was lucky, it would stay down. But with humidity in the air with the soon coming storm, his hair would most likely do everything but stay down. As he washed, he was able to feel how long it was getting. Yuuichirou figured he was due for a haircut soon. He would ask Shinya about one later. Shinya was the best hairdresser in Da'athen Empire. He was certainly the best within the Eidian Castle.
Rinsing his hair out, he pushed his hair out of his face and looked down at the soapy water. A bath every day, there was hardly any dirt to come off of him now a days but Kimizuki would hear none of it if he didn't bathe in the mornings. Especially before a dance or dinner. Yuuichirou scowled. He was only eighteen, he should be able to get out and get dirty. He wished he could visit the Amenine Lake again.
Pushing himself out of the tub, he drained it so none of the maids would have to later on. He grabbed a towel and dried out his hair before he dried his body. He stopped in front of the large mirror and stared at himself, the towel hung over his shoulders.
He was pretty lean, a few scars here and there from his sword training with his father. But none in any visible areas when he had clothing on. His cheeks were still sort of chubby with his rounded face and rounded nose-- almost button like. Either way, he was handsome and sought after by many people, some just trying to marry into the Ichinose family.
Turning his gaze away, he moved towards the door after having wrapped the towel around his waist. He peeked out to make sure Kimizuki had left before he moved towards his laid out clothing. A frown pulled at his lips, hands on his hips. There was no way he was going to wear something formal today, so he by passed his bed and headed towards his closet. He dressed in something more simple. Well-- as simple as a Prince's clothing can get. He'd apologize for not wearing what was laid out later. Pulling his boots on, he stepped to the his mirror hanging on his wall, grabbing a brush to see if he could try and tame his hair.
It did little-to-nothing besides getting rid of the knots, frustrating the boy. Dropping the brush down, he worked it with his hands until it was presentable and he stepped back. He nearly jumped at the knock on his door.
“Come in!” he called, turning away from the mirror. He was met with the scowling Kimizuki again.
“Your Highness, you really ought to start dressing like a Prince.”
“Yeah, and you really ought to try and smile around me for once. I dress well enough to fit the part but I am not wearing shirts with collars that choke you 'til you damn well pass out. I understand we're royalty but we don't have to look like we've got a stick up our ass.” Yuuichirou threw one of his hands up, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Sir, I understand but can you cut back on the language. It's not proper.” Kimizuki retorted, face softening as he gave a reluctant sigh, “If you would, stop by the kitchen for something to eat and Yoichi will escort you to the meeting hall.”
Yuuichirou rolled his eyes at the light scolding before he nodded and stepped forward until he was facing the pink-haired man.
“By the way, how's your courting with Yoichi coming?”
The ravenette smirked when the other sputtered, amused by the sudden showing of emotion. He dashed out of the room before Kimizuki could say anything more, giving a lighthearted laugh as he bounded towards the kitchen. Pushing the double doors open, he slowed down and slipped around a few culinary maids, stealing a few buns before he moved to sit on a stool, settling down and taking a large bite out of one.
“Good morning, Yuu,” came the informal greeting of a white-haired man who settled beside him.
“Oh-!” Yuuichirou brought a hand up to cover his mouth before he swallowed and grinned over at the other male, “Good morning, Shinya!”
“Lively as ever, you ought to save that energy for one day.” Shinya laughed, taking a pastry from a tray laying on the table only to receive a scolding look from one of the maids. He mouthed an apology after he took a bite.
“If I save it, then what's the point when I get too tired to use it? I'd rather use my energy while I still have it,” Yuuichirou explained, taking another bite before turning around to hand his extra bun over to an unsuspecting maid, Akane, “You can have that.”
“O-oh, no, it's alright-...” she hesitated, looking down nervously at the bun in her hands then back up to Yuuichirou, “Are you sure...?”
“Of course! You haven't eaten yet, right? Go ahead.” He grinned, causing the maid to blush and duck her head down before she hurried away from the Prince.
“Careful, Yuu. You'll be a heartbreaker just like your father.” came Shinya's sigh, having finished his pastry already.
“You would know, wouldn't you, Shinya?” Yuuichirou lifted his head back over to him as he slipped off the stool. The white-haired man turned his head away before the Prince could see the rosiness of his face.
“What are you suggesting, young Prince?”
“Nothing at all,” Yuuichirou replied in an amused tone, taking a step back before he left the blushing servant and left the kitchen.
Yuuichirou nearly ran into Yoichi on his way out, the brunette apologizing profusely as he quickly backed away from the Prince. The raven-haired boy waved a hand dismissively and sighed, his amusement disappearing as he was reminded of the meeting he had with his father. He stepped back to allow Yoichi time to recover after just colliding with him, dragging a hand through his hair.
“Please tell me it's canceled,” the Prince grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest as he stood up a little straighter. A frown tugged at the displeased boy when Yoichi shook his head no.
“I-I'm very sorry to inform you, Your Highness, but the meeting is still on.” the servant stuttered. Yuuichirou's features softened into a light smile and he shook his head. He didn't want the brunette thinking he was angry at him because of something his father had planned.
“It's alright, Yoichi. If you want, you can head into the kitchen and I'll walk myself there. I'm sure Kimizuki would like to see you as well, it may brighten his day,” Yuuichirou smiled a little more at the pink dusting the smaller boy's face. Yoichi gained a nervous smile, looking anywhere but the Prince as he fiddled with his hands while taking a step back.
“Is that really alright, young Prince?” the boy asked, sounding a little eager . His smile widened when Yuuichirou nodded to him and he quickly bowed before rushing off down the hall.
Yuuichirou watched the brunette disappear into the kitchen before he looked the opposite direction and sighed. He had half a mind to skip the meeting and head into town. The weather was still beautiful out and it would be a lovely day to visit the city. But if he did leave, Guren would definitely lock him in his room for another month with nothing to do besides lessons for his classes. He didn't want to risk that.
Steeling himself, Yuuichirou walked briskly down the hall towards the grand double doors. Some would mistake it for the ballroom, but the ballroom doors were wider than the meeting hall door. It was dumb. It was too much effort to push the damn things open and Yuuichirou could remember barely pushing it an inch with he was five and all Guren did was laugh at him.
Of course, Yuuichirou knew how to properly push open the doors now, so when he entered the meeting hall, he purposely flared his arms open after the doors had opened. Dropping his hands to his sides, he looked across the large table where, on the other side, sat his father.
Guren was always dressed sharply from head to toe. From the embroidered vests to the ridiculous shoes he wore. Yuuichirou preferred boots to fancy pointed-tip shoes. Boots were much more comfortable. And the Prince very much preferred comfortable things, while Guren always kept up his image with his style. However, he was devoid of his crown, which was sitting next to him, and he looked somewhat sloppy with his jacket unbuttoned and his sleeves rolled up. It was a rare sight to see.
Purple eyes lifted to meet with emerald green and Yuuichirou heard the faintest laugh leave him, “Well, don't stand there, Yuu. Come take a seat,” he offered, leaning back in his chair.
There were papers lining the table in a jumbled mess, a couple of quills and pens laying about. Guren never used quills though, he just had them around because it made him 'seem old fashioned'. Yuuichirou stepped forward, gaze lowering towards the mess of papers with a curious frown.
“I'd rather stand or you may make a rare mess of me as well,” Yuuichirou gave a smart retort, leaning against a chair instead of sitting in it.
“A mess of you? This is one of my good days in here, it's hardly a mess.” Guren rolled his eyes before he adjusted himself in his chair, “But, please sit. I do need to speak with you.”
“I wouldn't be here if you didn't need to,” the boy responded as he sat in a cushioned chair, lifting his gaze back up to his father. He watched his father laugh and settle down into his seat.
“In all serious matters, Yuu, we need to properly arrange this engagement to Mahiru-”
“Father, I do not wish to get married so soon,” Yuuichirou interrupted, sitting up straighter with his hands down on the table. Guren's face hardened out the outburst but he took a moment in order to keep from getting angry.
“Before you say anything more, Father. I hardly know what's going on in the Empire and you expect me to marry already? I have a while before I take the throne, do I not? Marriage will just bind me in place, it's worse than being grounded and I do not wish for such a responsibility yet. Please, allow me a few years of freedom?” Yuuichirou pleaded, his hands curling into fists as he carefully watched his father.
Guren was silent a moment, thinking over what his son was saying before he nodded slowly and sighed in defeat. Running a hand through his hair, he improperly leaned forward and placed his head in his hands as to cover his face.
“I understand, Yuu. I'll allow a few more years of freedom. I'll let them know that we wish to postpone such an event,” he rubbed the bridge of his nose before he sat back up straight, “On your way out, request some alcohol my way, will you?”
“I will,” he said, shooting up out of the chair and moving to hug his father, “Thank you.”
Yuuichirou grinned and kissed the man's cheek before he left the hall and shut the doors behind him. He'd now be able to do what he pleased and he had an idea on what to do. He would just have to wait until night fall.
Yuuichirou glanced around until he found a servant, informing them of his father's request before he returned to the kitchen to see if he could find Yoichi. He easily spotted him, speaking animatedly with his pink-haired butler. The ravenette paused a moment, wondering if he should leave them be and save the news. He glanced out the window, seeing the dark clouds starting to roll over, swallowing any light in its path.
He'd have some time to check the garden. Yuuichirou detoured out of the kitchen and out to the court yard, tilting the head up towards the sky. He'd have to prepare for the rainy night if he was going to go through with his plan. He wondered if someone would take care of his flowers for him.
“Looks like a dangerous storm tonight, Yuu.”
Yuuichirou jumped at the voice of the guard, Shinoa. He turned his head towards her before he turned his body. She wasn't in her usual uniform, looking more casual. Perhaps she was given a day off for once.
“You startled me, Shinoa.”
“I did not, you're easy to scare,” she countered with a grin.
“You're calling me a coward,” Yuuichirou frowned, turning away from her as he moved down the cement pathway. Shinoa followed.
“I'd never call you such a thing, Your Highness.”
“You would but you deny it as to not make my father angry. You should be more careful, you never know when he'll show up,” the boy said in a bored tone. He crouched down and pulled a few weeds out; it looked like he'd have to cover a few of them for awhile.
“You're false.”
Yuuichirou tensed, looking up at Shinoa. Her face was hard. She was calling him fake again. Turning his eyes away, he stayed silent for awhile as he pulled out weeds, taking care not to pull any flower roots.
“So be it, Shinoa. But is that any way to speak to your best friend?” he sighed, slowly pushing himself up before he crossed his arms over his chest, avoiding her direction.
“No matter, I leave it to you,” he motioned towards the garden before he turned and left to head back into the castle. His mood was ruined.
“What do you mean, sir?”
He left her without an answer, shutting the door behind him before he silently moved down the hallway towards his bedroom. He slammed the door behind him and ran his hands over his face in a stressed manner as he worked on trying to calm his nerves. It wasn't the first time Shinoa had called him fake and he was becoming tired of it. It's not like he was acting, because he wasn't. He hadn't changed from the kid who was picked up off the streets by Guren. He might be slightly spoiled now but he didn't treat anyone lesser than him, so how was he fake?
Was it because he wasn't human? That hadn't changed from when he was a kid either. Having fangs changed none of that.
He sighed, pushing off of the door and heading over towards his bed as he grabbed one of his favorite books. Yuuichirou sunk down into his bed after wrapping a few blankets around himself. Flipping open to where he left off, his eyes scanned over the easy-to-read Na'lian language. He's never heard anyone speak it, since the ones who spoke it was obviously from the Na'lian empire. Da'athen tongue was more drawn out, the vowels light. But the Arian language, the one used by the Four Demons country of Aranis was more harsh sounding to the ears and difficult to understand.
Yuuichirou preferred the Na'lian language.
His eyes started to close as the sound of thunder rolling grew louder and the pitter-patter of rain hit against his window. His room was darker and outside was gray. It was no longer bright and cheery but very much welcomed to the Prince. It matched his mood.
He startled when the book dropped from his hands and he sat up straight, realizing he had started to fall asleep. He gave a tired yawn and frowned, clearly upset with being tired. Green eyes turned towards the window and watched the rain fall, cascading into the courtyard beneath his window.
Yuuichirou made a decision as he slid out of his bed. Grabbing his money purse, he grabbed something more comfortable for traveling and a cloak to keep him dry from the rain. If he was so fake to some people, then he'd prove himself. He'd prove to Shinoa and the others. He wasn't like all the other demons. Not that he was a demon. Yuuichirou was anything but that. Vampire fit the bill. But one who rarely drank, not for morality reasons.
Pulling the cloak over himself, he grabbed his sword and looked over at the window again before he reached his hand out to grab the door. He didn't need to. The door nearly whacked him in the face and Yoichi stared, horrified, at what he had almost done but, thankfully, Yuuichirou had slammed a hand against the door. Taking in a deep breath, the black-haired boy had to calm his heart, resting his forehead against the panel of the door.
“I-I'm sorry, Sir. I should've knocked...” Yoichi stepped away from the doorway and bowed.
“Stand up, it's fine. No one got hurt or caught...” The prince sighed, eyes opening to shift over to the brunette, “What did you need me for?”
“I didn't, I came to change the sheets...” Yoichi straightened his back, looking up at the taller boy and glancing down at his attire with a questioning look.
“Sir, You're not planning on going out in this weather, are you?”
“Of course I am. It's perfect out,” Yuuichirou grinned at him as he stepped around Yoichi and into the hallway. He left the brunette gaping behind him, sheathing the sword into his belt as he walked.
“S-sir! You can't just leave without notifying anyone- The kin--!”
“Yoichi, I would hope you wouldn't rat me out so easily,” The ravenette stopped and turned around, giving a scolding look over at the servant.
“N-no, Your Highness, but... It's pouring outside and you may get sick.” Yoichi pointed out.
Yuuichirou thought a moment and tilted his head up towards the ceiling until he snapped his fingers and his green eyes widened, “Come with me then! Yoichi, you can make sure I don't do anything ridiculous.”
“What you're doing right now is ridiculous, sir!”
“See you!” Yuuichirou waved and turned to head down the rest of the hall without another word. Yoichi stared at the Prince's back, olive eyes wide. He felt anxiousness gnaw at him until he took in a deep breath and walked briskly after him, risking the action of reaching out and physically stopping the Prince.
“I don't advise you to do something so foolish, Sir.”
“Then advise me to not do so when I am out, therefore, what I'm doing won't be considered foolish in the future,” Yuuichirou retorted.
“Prince...” Yoichi huffed to himself before he straightened up and walked after him once more, “Then I'm required to go with you.”
“Great! That's what I wanted in the first place. Now, grab a coat or something, I'd rather not have a sick servant by my side in my travels...” Yuuichirou paused and turned towards Yoichi with a soft smile, “I don't mind if you do, though. You're no hindrance to me, Yoichi.”
“You're too kind, Sir.” the brunette responded as he moved to grab a coat from a nearby closet.
Yuuichirou began walking again, stopping at the gates as he looked up at the rain falling from the low clouds, barely flinching at the strike of lightning in the distance. Reaching up, he pulled the hood over his head and stepped out, heading for the stables.

tap tap tap
The tapping of a pen could be heard clearly in the silent room, save for the wind howling outside. It was dark out, but Mikaela couldn't sleep. It was a common occurrence for him lately. It soured his mood more than it usually was. He couldn't think of a thing to do during the night and none of the remedies he'd been given would help him sleep. Just an hour of rest would do him good, but he couldn't even get that.
When he did sleep, it was usually during the day when overwhelming exhaustion would over take him. Whether it be horse riding or sword practice, he'd fall asleep right there. He'd always see a flash of emerald green before he'd fall asleep. A pair of bright, green eyes.
Krul had become worried, wondering if Mikaela had been placed under some kind of hex but none was found. No traces of magic anywhere near Mikaela's person. So the reason for the boy to fall asleep was a complete mystery to everyone but he wished it would happen right now so he could get some rest.
Agitated, Mikaela pushed himself up out of his desk chair and stalked over to his window. Pushing it open, he allowed the frigid air to enter his room and wrap everything in a cold blanket of wind. It was refreshing compared to the stuffy room. He could've just dowsed the fire, it would've been easier. But it would also be a pain to start it up again. He saw lightning shattering the sky far away and frowned. He hadn't heard anything about a storm arriving, it didn't seem natural to have one when it was in the middle of winter. That would mean a blizzard would be arriving.
In an attempt to calm his nerves, he shut the windows again as if it would keep the storm away. He rested his forehead against the cool surface of the window pane and closed his eyes, pressing a hand against the window.
He jumped when something thumped on the other side of the window, taking a few steps back as he stared out of it. Nothing was present on the other side, so he had hoped it was just a small branch being carried with the raging window outside.
Running a hand through his blonde curls, he yawned and looked towards his bed. It looked inviting, but he knew he wouldn't be able to sleep if he laid down. He figured a trip to the kitchen would be best for now.
Exiting his room, he stepped into the quiet hall, only a few servants roaming about but most were in bed. Being just as quiet as the hallway, Mikaela made his way down and pushed open the doors to the kitchen. A young blonde girl still worked in the kitchen, even at this late an hour.
“Mitsuba,” Mikaela addressed in a soft voice, startling the girl despite speaking so softly.
Mikaela rarely spoke to anyone, so maybe that's what scared her. He offered her a kind smile as he walked over and leaned against the counter, resting his head in his hand.
“Young Prince... I didn't expect you to be roaming around at this hour. Do you need something?”
Mitsuba sat down the clean tray and placed her hands on the counter in order to give Mikaela her full attention. Mikaela was always amused at how adamant she was when it came to working. She wouldn't rest unless everything was as it should be and things were prepared for the next day. He didn't know how she did it.
“Sleep would be nice,” he sighed, the frown replacing his smile in an instant.
“No green?” she asked, lips pursing in a curious frown. It deepened when Mikaela shook his head.
“No. Those mysterious eyes haven't been seen by the likes of me for quite some time. Nearly a week, yet I'm still walking. I'm cursed, aren't I?”
Mitsuba laughed and shook her head at his exaggeration. She patted his hand before moving to grab a sweet bun, handing it to him. Mikaela took it, taking a bite from it. He smiled a little at the sweet taste of sauce from the filling.
“Hardly. But it seems you're bewitched by someone you haven't met,” she hummed in thought, eyes widening, “It could be like a fated love waiting to happen!”
“Yes, well... I do wish it would give me a break and allow me to sleep,” Mikaela complained after swallowing his third bite. The sweet bun fell out of his hand as he suddenly became light headed and he had to lean forward against the table to keep from falling.
“Your Highness, are you alright?” Mitsuba asked, concern written on her face as she hurried around to him.
“Yes, I'm fine... I believe. I should head back to my room, thank you for your concern,” he said quietly before pushing himself up and moving towards the door. He didn't let Mistuba say anything more as he stumbled down the hallway back towards his room. He carefully shut the door behind him and sunk down to his knees, getting another wave of feeling light headed.
He found it occurring frequently, but it had more to do with not being able to sleep. He had to at least try and rest or it'd only get worse and his body would end up shutting down at any given point. He rested his forehead on the floor and closed his eyes a moment before he sluggishly pushed himself up and walked over to his bed. Mikaela threw back the covers and pulled his shoes off. He didn't bother to change clothes as he laid his tired body down onto the soft sheets.
Instinctively his eyes closed, enjoying the feeling of being able to do so. The first time in a month, he fell asleep with no trouble at all. He welcomed sleep entirely, sinking further into his sheets as his consciousness faded. But he dreamt of one with green and fangs.
Demons, devils, and vampires were all uncommon in the Na'lian and Da'athen empires. They were on found in the country Aranis. There was little explanation for why Mikaela was dreaming about such things but while he slept, he could care less about it.
“My lord..?”
The voice wasn't loud but it pulled Mikaela out of his comfortable dream and he immediately wanted to try and catch that dream again. As soon as he opened his eyes, he could no longer remember what he had dreamed about but his neck tingled for some reason. He brought a hand up to his neck as he stared up at the ceiling of his canopy, running his fingers over where the phantom pain lingered.
“My Lord,” the voice was louder this time, pulling the Prince's attention over to the lavender haired servant standing by his bedside, “My Lord, you're late for breakfast and you've missed your morning lessons.”
“... Oh,” Mikaela murmured dumbly, blinking up at Lacus.
He felt heavy, his body not wanting to move. He wanted to go back to sleep and return to whatever he had dreamed about. Mikaela forced himself into an upright position, staring down at his clothes and frowning. He had fallen asleep in his day clothes. He looked up when Lacus offered a hand and the young prince took it so he could get his sluggish body out of bed.
“I'm glad to see you've gotten some rest.”
The blonde offered a slight smile in response, silently agreeing with him as he stretched out his stiff limbs and sighed. He'd bathe and change clothes after breakfast. He was too aware of how empty his stomach felt at the moment. Mika looked back towards his bed, half tempted to crawl back in and take a day to himself.
His stomach growled again, causing him to wince and place a hand over his stomach. Sighing through his nose, he pushed himself out of his bed and leaned forward, closing his heavy eyes. He jumped when he heard someone clear their throat, realizing he had started to doze off. Mikaela bowed his head in apology before he moved towards the door. “Sir, shouldn't you change into fresh clothes before leaving to eat?” Lacus asked, pulling the blonde's attention back to him.
“... It'll be fine, Lacus. Thank you for your concern, though.” He smiled softly before exiting his room and stepping out into the hallway. Lacus stayed behind to clean the Prince's room.
Mikaela stretched out once more as he stepped into the kitchen, smiling to himself when the warm air of the kitchen wrapped around him. It was a lot livelier than the night before, more bustling about. He should really enter the dining hall, but he was too hungry to sit and wait for something to be brought to him.
Tomoe rushed towards him with a plate of buns, eggs, and sausage with a delighted smile on his face. Blinking at her enthusiasm, he reached up and took the plate from her, watching her leave just as quickly as she had approached him. Mikaela was definitely not complaining, though. As much as it would be lovely to sit in the homey kitchen and eat, Mikaela wanted to get back to his room so he could prepare for the day. Taking another look around, he turned and nearly bumped into Ferid.
“Oh, I'm sorry my dear Mika,” Ferid cooed. Mikaela frowned at the shortening and informal calling of his name. He took a step back from the guard and simply bowed his head to the silver-haired male.
“Not speaking again? Can't say I'm not surprised, however, The Queen would like to speak with you.”
“Can't it wait?” Lacus butted in for Mikaela, stepping by his side. The blonde was extremely grateful for the intervention, sighing in relief quietly.
“Queen Krul won't be pleased about having to wait,” Ferid's tone was a bit harsher, a hand resting on his hip.
“I understand, but the Prince hasn't yet had time to bathe and fully wake up. He's finally gotten some rest, so if you would kindly tell Her Majesty to wait a little longer, Prince Mikaela,” Lacus emphasized the blonde's full name with a slight glare directed towards Ferid, “would be happy to attend with the Queen.”
Mikaela gave a lopsided smile, glancing between the two. Lacus often spoke for him when Mikaela didn't know how to get out of situation. Which was, unfortunately, quite often. He offered another nod in Ferid's direction before hurrying out of the kitchen and back into his room. As he sat back on his bed and took a couple bite of the eggs, Lacus knocked before entering the Prince's room.
“Lacus, I thank you a million times more.” Mikaela grinned at him.
“Sir, there is no need to thank me. I'm your personal servant, I'm here to help you. Plus, I don't mind getting into a few arguments, they're fun,” Lacus grinned back at the Prince, “Back to being serious, Her Majesty really won't wait for long. I recommend you hurry.”
“I will,” Mikaela responded with a slight smile. He looked back down at his plate and pursed his lips. He took a couple more bites of eggs before setting the plate down on the bed and he showed himself to the bath. He didn't mind drawing a warm bath for himself. It was probably still cold outside, so he would have to dress warmly today. Lacus followed Mikaela in with clothes, laying them out over the sink carefully before turning towards the Prince.
Mikaela glanced over at Lacus a moment as he unbuttoned his shirt, mulling something over in his mind. “Lacus, what do you know about Vampires?” he asked, watching the puzzled look spread across his servant's face.
“Vampires? They're rare even in Aranis. There's not much study on them. What would you like to know about them?” Lacus rested his hands in front of him as he waited patiently for an answer.
The blonde pursed his lips, head quirking up as he pulled his shirt and vest off. He sat them down in the hamper before working on his slacks, “Well... do they know magic?”
“They're considered the most skilled in magic, actually. Ferid is one, I'm sure you know. He's very useful in wars. Some can even summon monsters.”
“Don't vampires feed on blood, though?” Mikaela stepped into the water, sinking down into the still filling tub of warm water. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, feeling his limbs relax.
“You're suddenly very curious about this, your Hignness. What's caught your interest?” Lacus stepped forward to sit on a stool next the tub. Mikaela didn't mind the company. He could only tolerate Lacus being in the bathroom with him, though. Since they grew up together.
“I'm just been dreaming about them. It had me wondering about it, is all.”
“Well, Vampires do need to feed on blood, yes. However, Ferid very rarely needs to do so. He's able to draw energy from different sources sometimes when he needs to. Since Vampires are so similar to Demons and Devils, they have many traits in common. It's very easy to mistake them. They all have red eyes, for example. They all have fangs and magic. They feed on energy they can find. However, if a Vampire is wounded severely, they're required to feed immediately.”
Mikaela frowned up at the statue looming over the tub, bringing his knees up to his chest. “How can you know this is all correct information,” the Prince wondered allowed and Lacus frowned now that it was brought to his attention.
“We don't, they're too rare to really know much about it.” Lacus admitted, resting his hands in his lap. “But if they're anything like Ferid, I'd rather not meet another one.”
“...” Mikaela gave a small giggle, putting the topic to rest for now. All he could remember were green eyes and fangs. If the creatures of Aranis had red eyes, why did some one with green eyes have fangs? If anything, the one in his dreams looked like an angel.
Either way, he hoped he would be able to get betters nights of rest from now on.
Notes:
it won't be a common thing to go between yuu and mika in most of the chapters. it'll mostly be Yuu unless it's important.
Chapter 3: Rain
Summary:
Yuuichirou slips out of the castle walls unnoticed but he doesn't know how to sit in a carriage properly. Yuu seems to be having hunger urges as well that Yoichi notices almost immediately, he just hopes he's wrong.
Notes:
This is really just to indulge myself with elaborate fanfictions about Mikayuu with a side of yoichi. Let me know what you think about this so far? Also, I really like magic.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Yuuichirou stared up at the heavy rain falling, a frown gracing his lips. He glanced over at Yoichi one last time before he pulled the hood over his head and stepped out into the shower of rain. It took a couple of minutes before his cloak was thoroughly soaked but it only seemed to bother Yoichi. The Prince seemed perfectly okay with being soaked to the bone, not even weighed down by how heavy his clothing was becoming. Thankfully, the trek to the stables didn't take long, Yuuichirou stopping in front of a large man.
Yoichi hid behind the Prince, timidly looking over at the coachman. His intimidating build didn't seem to bother Yuuichirou either as the black-haired boy straightened up and pulled the hood off of his head. The man narrowed his eyes down at the Prince.
“Sir, you should be in the castle in weather like this.”
“Do not call me sir, I'm going into the town of Na'tal as Yuu Amane. Yuuichirou Ichinose is still in his room,” Yuuichirou stated, placing a hand on his hip as he looked up at the large man.
“Your Highness!”
“Hush, Yoichi,” Yuuichirou hissed quietly, keeping his gaze on the Coachman.
The large man rubbed at his chin, head lifted as he scanned over the prince with a skeptic look on his face. He looked like he might rat Yuuichirou out, but the Prince had a Plan B if that were to happen. Sighing heavily, he slipped his gloves on and grabbed a coat, stepping back.
“Yuu Amane is heading into Na'tal? That'll cost you.” The Coachman explained as he opened the door to allow the two inside. Yoichi clambered into the carriage first, grateful to get out of the rain as soon as possible. He shivered as he settled down into the warm seat, crossing his arms over himself. Despite it being Spring, there was a cold wind in the air and Yuuichirou noticed with great worry.
“Any price will do, as long as it's reasonable. However, if my Father is to find out that I've left by the mouth of you, you will not be paid.” Yuuichirou said steadily.
Eyes narrowed down at the young lord but Yuuichirou remained undeterred as mischievous green eyes met a glare. The man seemed to fight with himself but since Yuuichirou was technically royalty, he could do nothing but listen to him. The last thing he wanted were consequences of not listening.
Begrudgingly, the Coachman offered his hand to help the Prince up into the carriage. Yuu flashed him a thankful grin, fangs glinting in the lightning that struck in the distance. He settled down across from Yoichi and ran a hand through his damp hair, leaning his head back against the seat.
“Sir, why are you heading into town?” Yoichi broke the temporary silence. Yuu's attention was drawn back to the shivering brunette, frowning at how cold he looked. He didn't know of a way to warm the boy up anymore than another soaked cloak could.
“Don't call me, Sir. Call me Amane. Calling me Yuu would just give away my identity, as well as calling me Sir. Me and you are going to travel the countries.”
“How can you say that so calmly?! What if there's a chance yo-- we won't come back?” Yoichi damn nearly shot out of his seat, olive eyes wide in befuddlement.
“Do you not trust me, Yoichi?” Yuu frowned up at Yoichi as he crossed one leg over the other. He thought a moment before he clicked his tongue and dismissed whatever thought his had just now.
“It's not that I don't trust you, Si-- Yuu. It's that I don't trust everyone else,” the brunette said nervously as he settled back, his hair plastered to his face. He averted his gaze when Yuu's gaze seemed to bore through him. His anxiousness seemed to triple as Yuu sat, staring at him.
“Then, how about this? Why don't you trust me to keep us both safe?” He asked, leaning forward to place a warming hand to Yoichi's face. The brunnete's shivering stopped after a moment because of the heat radiating from Yuu's hand. Yuu grinned at him before leaning back and pulling the damp cloak off of himself.
“...” Yoichi wasn't able to offer a response, dumbly nodding his head as he placed a hand over the red mark that was left on his face where Yuu had touched. His lips pursed, watching the young Prince stare out the window. Yoichi kept silent, the only sounds being of the storm and rocks crunching under wheels. The ride was bumpy, jostling them in their seats as they headed into town.
Yuu looked down at the gloves covering his hand, rubbing his fingers together like he was trying to wipe off dirt or warm them. His hands felt numb, tingling like they usually did when he used magic. For everyone else, using magic was an effort. Yuu learned to not question anything any more.
He swore he heard his name being spoken, causing his eyes to shift up towards Yoichi. But when he looked up, he saw the boy had fallen asleep and his frown deepened. He brushed the soft calling of his name off as him being tired from the steady drumming of rain outside. He glanced outside, biting his lip a moment. Grabbing the door handle, he carefully opened it as the carriage continued to move.
He would've been scolded severely by anyone if he was caught, leaning out of the carriage and grasping onto the side after shutting the door again. The Coachman couldn't see him from this angle, and he was grateful for it as he moved to sit on the back of the carriage. He was able to sit comfortably on the ledge behind it as they drove on, the rain further wetting his skin. He felt himself grinning up at the sky as the sky wept, the sky cracking with light. It was probably the most free he's ever felt ever since he was a five year old kid running around on the streets.
The coolness of the water brought back the feeling in his hands, soaking into his clothing but he didn't mind. He would probably get sick but he was able to enjoy how open everything was instead of being surrounded by walls all the time. He kept a good grip on the seat he was sitting on so he wouldn't fall off. The rain felt sharp the harder it fell, yet he continued to stay outside of the carriage on their way toward Na'tal.
Yuuichirou leaned his head back against the back of the carriage and closed his eyes, allowing his thoughts to calm as he enjoyed the ride. A cold gust of air brought him back to his senses after awhile, lifting his head as he looked around. He didn't remember the carriage stopping at all and the rain wasn't coming down as hard either. Carefully sliding off of the seat, he peeked around to see the town a head of them. He glanced down at his clothes and scowled slightly, shaking the water from his hair which was futile because it was still raining.
“Good Job, Yuu,” he muttered to himself as he slipped back into the carriage quietly and gently shook Yoichi awake. The brunette startled at the cool hand on his shoulder, moving away from Yuu. Frowning at the Prince's appearance, he glanced him up and down.
“What in heavens happened to you..?” Yoichi asked, seeing the slight flinch from Yuuichirou.
“Nothing, come one. We're here,” he responded, grabbing his cloak and pulling it on. Before he could step back out, Yoichi grabbed the others wrist to stop him.
“You can't go out with your face showing and you need dry clothes now.” Yoichi scolded as he stepped out, pushing Yuu back into the carriage, “Wait here your maj-- .. Yuu, I'll be back.”
Green eyes followed the small servant as he disappeared into the fog of the rain with nothing but the cloak to keep him dry. Yuu reluctantly settled back in the cushioned seat, scowling at nothing as he stared up at the clouded sky. He sighed through his nose, watching the clouds begin to part. The sun's rays reached through the clouds like it was trying to part the clouds physically. He started to day dream, his fangs beginning to ache. He needed to bite something, it was like he was teething all over again. He grumbled to himself.
Yuu sat back up straight when Yoichi reappeared, climbing in the hand him a bag, “These should be fine and I hope you wear that to hide your identity.”
“Yoichi, I'm so glad I talked you into coming with me,” Yuu grinned, pulling out a silver mask, running his thumb over the smooth details engraved in it. Setting it down, he pulled out the change of clothes, eyeing them wearily. He'd definitely look like a traveler in Da'athen but if he were to cross into Na'lian territory, he'd stick out like a sore thumb. It was better than the wet clothing he had on.
They both stepped out of the carriage after another minute or two, Yuu waving the Coachman over. He pulled out a couple of gold coins before handing it to them, “I still trust you won't rat me out.”
“Unless my life is being threatened, I won't tell a soul,” the man promised with a bow of his head before he snapped the reins and turned the carriage around, disappearing down the path. Yuu turned towards Yoichi before disappearing into the thick trees near by to change since he couldn't just walk in some where.
Yoichi waited patiently for Yuu to return, smiling a bit when he stepped out. Yuu's face was covered with the mask, his pants tucked into his boots and a jacket covering the shirt beneath it. Yuu had kept his gloves on and the belts from the other outfit he had been wearing so he could keep his sword by his side. The cloak was resting on his shoulders again, looking more mysterious if anything.
“Yoichi, may I reiterate that you're the best?” Yuu grinned at the servant, causing the poor boy to blush and grin back at the Prince.
“That'll do, Yuu.” Yoichi said sheepishly before stepping back and looking over at the children starting to come out of their houses since the rain stopped. As Yuu stepped beside Yoichi, the clouds parted and scattered. “First thing is first, we should get something to eat to take with us and maybe rest a bit her-”
“Yoichi, if we stay so close to the castle, I'm bound to be found out sooner than I would like. Let's just stock up and head off for now, are you alright with camping out?” Yuu asked, turning back towards the smaller boy. He watched the other hesitate before speaking again, frowning slightly in concern.
“Alright. But I must warn you, you're probably not use to walking as much as you think,” Yoichi said quietly as he stepped into the outskirts of town, Yuu following behind him for a moment before the black-haired boy took lead.
“I'm sure I'll be fine as long as I don't stay hungry,” Yuu said casually, looking around as the children ran through the streets playing. The adults were glancing over at Yuu suspiciously yet the Prince paid them no mind as the two boys made their way into the market. Yuu had been in Na'tal before, so it wasn't difficult to navigate around and find his way.
Yoichi frowned at Yuu's comment, not entirely sure what he meant by that but he silently followed after him.
Notes:
Look, Yuu. You're going to get so fucking sick if you keep playing in rain.

Chapter Text
Along the market streets, he had to avoid running into a few kids playing about. Seeing them running around brought a smile to his face. He wanted to join them but his hunger was growing, finding food would continue to stave him off for awhile. Why Guren decided to chose a vampire off the streets was beyond him, but he was grateful for it nonetheless. Blood, ironically, wasn't a constant need for him. As long as he ate food, he'd be fine. But if he ever needed to, it was usually from animals.
Wearing a cloak was no coincidence either. If he ever lost the bracelet around his wrist, the cloak would be the only thing keeping him alive in the sunlight. Sniffing, he smelled food nearby. Something fresh. He's never had food from the village before. He was use to sweet buns and elaborate dinners. Without checking if Yoichi was following him or not, Yuu followed the smell of food to a local bakery.
It smelled wonderful.
As soon as he stepped into the bakery, he wanted to pull his mask off but he couldn't. He probably looked ominous in a mask but he'd have to get over it if he didn't want anyone pointing out that the Prince had snuck out. Inside the bakery was warm and just the smell was enough to make his mouth water. He heard a chuckle beside him and turned his head to look at the brunette.
“ It smells wonderful, doesn't it? I could go up and get you something if you'd like? They'd probably think you're strange with the.. mask and.. stuff,” Yoichi twirled his finger towards Yuu's attire before he smiled a bit.
“ Huh? Oh..” bringing his hand up to his face, he ran his fingers over the mask before looking back at Yoichi, “it would be wonderful if you could get me something, yes.” he agreed with a simple nod of his head.
“ It's my pleasure to. You should wait outside, though. If you just stand here, you'll look suspicious,” Yoichi offered a small smile before he walked towards the merchant. Yuu stepped back slightly before he turned around completely and made his way out of the bakery. Maybe there was a better way to hide his identity? No, there were plenty of people who hid their face, he shouldn’t be so worried about it. What he should be worried about, however, is the forever growing hungry for human blood. Of course, he had more restraint to resist after all those years living with humans.
Still, sometimes he found it hard. His gaze followed quite a few people walking down the street. His fangs ached and made him anxious the more he stared. Na’tal really was a pretty place so Yuu distracted himself with that. However, just because it was pretty didn’t mean it was in the best of shape. And that concerned him.
Hearing his name called, he briefly wondered if he was hallucinating again. Turning his head towards the source of the voice, he smiled a bit in relief when he saw it was Yoichi returning. He couldn’t smile completely, he knew someone would spot his fangs. Yuu couldn’t just hide them either, they were just. There.
“Yuu, here.” Yoichi breathed out with a smile pulling at his lips, handing Yuu some bread and pastries.
Taking them gratefully, Yuu smiled back gently at his servant, “Thank you, Yoichi. I’m not sure how much longer I could’ve stood out here,” he joked. They should be making their way to Da’athen by now. But they still needed to get some things before they began the long trek there.
Yuu didn’t miss the uncomfortable look Yoichi gave him for the comment, making the ravenette sigh through his nose. Ignoring the look, he bit into the bread and packed the pastries in his bag for now. Though he figured he should probably keep such comments to himself and not scare Yoichi like that. Plus, if anyone ever overheard, they’d find Yuu a threat and that wouldn’t be the best situation for him. Not a good situation at all.
Giving a sheepish, “Sorry,” Yuu turned away before briskly walking away from the bakery and heading towards the grocer where he could at least get a few days worth of food. Da’athen was pretty far from here. He briefly wondered how he’d even handle walking such a long distance.
Yoichi watched as the Prince’s form disappeared before he quickly realized that he shouldn’t leave Yuu by himself even if Yuu was kind of intimidating. Even if Yuu was kind, he was kind of scary and often made Yoichi nervous yet he wouldn’t say such things to him. Of course, he was absolutely honored to know that Yuu wanted him to keep him on track and out of trouble.
Taking a step forward, Yoichi hurried after the Prince in order to keep him in his line of view. It’d be bad if they got separated from each other.
Yoichi was the one who had to approach and buy things because Yuu was hesitant on greeting the townspeople. He’s not used to being around so many people and it made him more than just a little nervous. In fact, Yuu prefered to hurry up and be on their way towards Da’athen. Yuu wondered briefly if he had another motive for running away. Nevermind being insulted by others for what he was, but he felt inclined to leave. He felt pulled by something and he knew someone was probably waiting for him.
Irate. Yuu was angry.
Bringing up the fact that Shinoa, people within his castle, didn’t trust him. It made him mad.
Yuu glanced back at Yoichi, wondering if the servant was one of the people who didn’t trust him. But the Prince trusted Yoichi and that was enough for him. He wouldn’t waste his time dwelling on it. What he needed to be focusing on was getting out of this small town before he was found out.
“Prince Mikaela, it’s fantastic to see you up and well!” came the cheery voice of Chess.
“Well? Why would I not be well?” Mika inquired, sitting atop his bed with a book in his lap. He should really be getting up and dressed to travel to the ports with Ferid but that would take days. Mika was tempted to call if off but he knew he couldn’t do that to his mother.
“With you being so tired lately, I was worried you would do another one of your fainting spells,” she pointed out with a small smile.
Mikaela laughed under his breath and nodded faintly, “Of course, considering it’s something that I’ve been doing lately, isn’t it? I assure you, Chess,” he said as he closed the book in his lap and sat it to the side, “that I’m fine. I slept well last night.”
“Ah, I see,” she hummed while walking towards him, “Ferid sent me up here to make sure you’re getting ready but instead you’re sitting here reading a book,” she scolded.
Mika rolled his eyes with an outward sigh, pushing himself up off the bed. Chess immediately went about straightening it up as the Prince made his way towards the closet.
“Books are interesting, you can’t blame me. I prefer mysteries over romances. Always something new instead of the old cliches of falling in love,” he informed, carding through his shirts as he tried to pick which one to wear, he frowned, “It’s disappointing.”
“How can a romance book be disappointing, Prince?”
Chess sounded amused, a small grin on her face. Mika couldn’t help but roll his eyes once he turned away from her.
“It’s always boy meets girl or something like star-crossed lovers-.. I want something interesting, Chess. I wonder if I’ll fall in love with a monster,” he murmured to himself.
Mikaela usually didn’t talk so much, only with his servants. Like now, how he was speaking animatedly about wanting an interesting love story. He almost laughed at himself because many of his books he’s read started out with someone wishing the same thing. He would at least settle for someone to care about. To stand by him.
“You’re a strange one, Prince. You should finish getting ready, Ferid is waiting in the coach. Don’t keep him waiting too long,” she teased, standing back up straight and moving back towards the door, “And don’t forget a coat, it’s cold outside and it’s.. Lightning. Be careful.”
The blonde stepped back and looked towards Chess with a small smile, “Of course. Don’t worry about my trip to the ports.”
Once she left, Mikaela sighed and looked down at his feet.
He didn’t want to get involved in Da’athen affairs but he would have to. He was just scared of messing up along the way.
