A soft sigh escaped her lips as she reached for the cup of coffee resting tranquilly upon the table's surface. "As of late, our talents have been under a strange sort of attack, not physical, mind you..but it's troubling all the same. If this pattern continues, I fear it will only be a matter of time before someone is truly harmed." She gave a slow, mournful shake of her head, the gesture a quiet echo of her concern.

"I understand." the man seated across from her said, his expression sincere as he nodded gently. "I'm glad to do what I must if it ensures the safety of others."

"Ah, and if it's not too much trouble." he continued, his voice touched with respectful curiosity, "may I ask how I should address you, miss...?"

The woman gave a soft, melodic laugh, her smile widening with delight.

"You may call me Miss Uriel!"

Kim Dokja took a sip from the coffee he had just purchased, letting the bitter warmth slide down his throat as he melted into the embrace of the couch. His moment of quiet was short-lived, shattered less than a minute later by a familiar, exasperating voice.

"Drinking coffee this early isn't good for your health."

"...You really don't need to ruin my peace." Kim Dokja muttered, irritation lacing his tone. That irritation quickly doubled when he turned his head and laid eyes on the man before him..his husband.

"Ugh... that face of yours." he groaned.

"It's my face." Yoo Joonghyuk replied, as if that explained everything.

"Exactly."

With a practiced eye-roll, Yoo Joonghyuk reached out and effortlessly stole the coffee cup from Kim Dokja's hand.

"Wha- hey!"

"I said it's unhealthy." came the flat reply.

Kim Dokja sighed, letting his face fall into the pillow beside him. He knew, with the deep weariness of a man defeated by routine, that there was no use arguing with his husband when it came to bad habits.

"...What happened, though?" Yoo Joonghyuk asked after a beat of silence.

Kim Dokja turned his head, eyes half-lidded but locked on his husband.

"Well... the entertainment branch of the company has been catching heat lately."

"And why's that? You do realize we're also part of the entertainment division, right?"

"Ehh... anyway. You remember that collaboration we did not long ago? The one with that other company?"

Yoo Joonghyuk visibly tensed.

"Papa, Papa! Where are we going?" Anya cried out, bouncing with unrestrained glee as she sought her father's attention. Loid turned toward her with a soft smile, the joy of his daughter washing over him like a warm breeze. He exhaled gently.

"To a party." Loid replied, voice smooth as ever.

"Ah, is it a very formal one?.." Yor asked, a hint of nervousness tracing her words. Her unease made Loid chuckle quietly—even her anxiety held a charm he had come to treasure.

They were, in every sense, a picture of happiness, a peculiar, patchwork family stitched together by fate and circumstance, yet genuine all the same.

To speak truly, "Loid Forger" was never his real name. It was a fabricated identity, crafted meticulously for a mission he once accepted. That assignment, veiled in secrecy, was one he would have taken under any other circumstance. But life has its own strange timing, and he had chosen retirement, stepping away from the shadows. The irony? He no longer even remembered his birth name. So, he remained Loid Forger, by choice and necessity.

Yet the first month of retirement hollowed him. The structure, the constant vigilance, the sense of purpose, all vanished like smoke in the wind. Each attempt to find serenity only unearthed more restlessness. His body, trained through countless operations, refused peace. It pulsed with a relentless awareness, as if danger lurked behind every quiet moment.

He was teetering on the edge of unraveling.

Then, one unremarkable afternoon, his gaze fell upon a nearby orphanage nestled along the street near his apartment—a dilapidated place with peeling paint and cracked steps. But from within its weary walls came laughter... bright, honest, and whole.

It was in that laughter that he first saw her.

A child with vibrant pink hair, curious eyes, and an inexplicable pull, a little girl who seemed to reach into his mind with a glance. Something stirred in him. On a whim born of instinct and aching emptiness, he stepped into the orphanage. He had come to decide whether to adopt her.

But that was the curious twist of fate.

It wasn't he who made the choice. He was the one chosen.

The moment that pink-haired girl laid eyes on him, she pointed boldly and refused to let go, as if she'd seen something in him that even he had forgotten.

A flame burned behind her eyes, wild and full of life.

He would later learn her name: Anya. Clever and chaotic, a little tempest in a six-year-old's frame, brilliant when she wanted to be, and gloriously lazy when she didn't. And so, Loid adopted her.

Yey! Happy moments! And then came Yor, and yes, things happened. Strange things. Beautiful things.

But that wasn't what Loid should be dwelling on.

He was a man of vigilance, after all. A man with a family now. And it was them, this little chaos he called home, that he would protect, no matter what shadows rose from the past.

"Ahhhh!! Look look here!"

"Oh my god!"

"Please sign my notebook!"

Hm.

That's a lot of people today.

Ivan sighed. He looked at the crowd gathered by the mansion gates, his face pressed against the car window, eyes half-lidded with exhaustion. The throng was causing quite the disruption. No wonder they hadn't been let in for the past thirty minutes.

Ivan sighed again.

"Sighing too much isn't good for you, Hun." Kim Dokja chuckled, reaching over to ruffle his son's hair. Yoo Joonghyuk stayed quiet, but offered Ivan a faint, rare smile.

"But we're going to be lateeeee." Ivan complained. Kim Dokja nodded and sighed, this time in a shared defeat.

"Can't do anything about that. Apparently, the party's open to the public. That's why people are swarming the gate.. we should've been let in minutes ago."

Yoo Joonghyuk shook his head. "Should we just get out?"

"Are you crazy?! No way I'm going outside with a bunch of people trying to grab my hand!" Kim Dokja shrieked.

"They know you're married." Yoo Joonghyuk replied, unfazed.

"And? Dear—ha. People like that exist. They don't care if you're married as long as you're attractive!" Kim Dokja argued.

"Yeah Dad, people like that exist." Ivan added solemnly.

Just then, Yoo Joonghyuk's phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and sighed. Without hesitation, he answered.

"What do you want—"

"WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS?!" Han Sooyoung's voice blared through the speaker. Kim Dokja immediately covered his ears, while Ivan just sighed and smiled like someone who'd long accepted his fate.

"Keep your fucking mouth shut." Yoo Joonghyuk muttered.

"Oh I'm soooo scared... WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU ANYWAYS?? WE'RE ALMOST STARTING??" Han Sooyoung barked, ignoring him entirely.

"We're hoarded! People keep blocking the entrance gate!" Kim Dokja answered, raising his voice over hers.

"Oh? Well, do you want me to call our bodyguard to escort you guys out? Just leave your car with your driver, will you? Uriel's going to kill me if you don't get here in under ten minutes!"

Bodyguard?

"Oh, Loid-ssi!" Kim Dokja said, suddenly recalling.

"Oh, the non-toxic guy..." Ivan added.

"Pfft. What do you mean by non-toxic??" Kim Dokja laughed. Ivan blinked and began to explain, quite seriously—how most blondes are toxic, and how Loid was the exception.

Yoo Joonghyuk rolled his eyes but still listened, completely forgetting he was still on the phone with Han Sooyoung.

"HAHHA! YOU CALL HIM NON-TOXIC? HAHAH!!" Ah. She must have heard Ivan.

Yoo Joonghyuk sighed and tapped 'end call' without hesitation. He would rather send Kim Dokja on a week-long business trip without him than suffer another minute of Han Sooyoung's screeching voice.

"I think she called—"

Before Kim Dokja could finish his sentence, a knock at the car window snapped all three out of their thoughts. They turned toward the sound.

And there he was.. the very subject of their conversation.

Loid Forger.

"Ah. Speaking of the non-toxic." Kim Dokja teased with a smirk.

He rolled the window down.

"Good morning, Loid-ssi!"

"Good morning to you too, Sir Kim Dokja!" Loid greeted with a slight bow, eyes kind. He gave a respectful nod to both Ivan and Yoo Joonghyuk. "You should get out now. The party's about to begin. Don't worry, I can protect the three of you."

Kim Dokja nearly laughed. He couldn't imagine Yoo Joonghyuk ever needing protection, which really only left Ivan and himself.

But even Ivan, much like his father, was stronger than he looked.

Hah.

No use overthinking it now. It was time to move.

"You made it, Kim Dokja-ssi!" Uriel squealed the moment Kim Dokja stepped through the grand doors. Her voice rang with joy, bright and shrill with anticipation. Yoo Joonghyuk merely fixed her with an icy glare in response, his silence more cutting than words. Uriel, however, was immune to it. She met his disapproval with unbothered ease, choosing to ignore it entirely.

"Of course we would make it. Did you really think we'd miss an event this important?" Kim Dokja said, embracing Uriel warmly.

"Are we complete, Noona?" he asked as he gently pulled back from the hug, his eyes scanning the room with concern. He was searching for the small figure of his son, worry threading through his voice at the possibility he'd been left behind.

"No… not yet. Half of us are still-" Uriel faltered. Despite the smile etched onto her face, the three young men standing just inside the doorway could see the tension behind her expression. Her composure was beginning to crack.

"Ah, I see…" Kim Dokja muttered, rubbing the back of his head. "Who's still missing, Noona?"

Uriel released a tired sigh. "Well… the cast of 'Trash of the Count's Family' is still incomplete."

Ivan merely shook his head in mild dismay while Kim Dokja let out a weary sigh, one laced with reluctant amusement.

"Let me guess.. Cale-ssi and Rosalyn-ssi, right?" he said, his tone dry but tinged with a fond exasperation.

Uriel groaned and gave a slow, defeated nod.

"We can just begin the event without them, can't we?" Yoo Joonghyuk interjected coldly. Uriel shot him a middle finger without even looking his way, then waved Kim Dokja and Ivan toward their seats. Yoo Joonghyuk followed, still as emotionless as ever.

"No, we cannot." Uriel said firmly. "They're among the main stars our guests are looking forward to meeting."

Kim Dokja groaned as he sank into his seat, Yoo Joonghyuk's expression remaining unreadable. Ivan merely offered Uriel a sympathetic smile, full of polite understanding.

"Oh! Did Loid-ssi guide you here?" Uriel asked suddenly, her tone lifting with the shift in topic.

"Ah! Yes, he did. A reliable guide and a formidable protector." Kim Dokja replied with a nod. "He shielded us and the crowd alike, never once raising a hand to the civilians, even when they shoved and pushed. Not once did he lose control."

Uriel beamed with pride. "Exactly why we hired him. He's not just strong, he's compassionate, a true guardian."

Just then, Ivan's phone vibrated.

"Ah." he murmured as he picked it up, swiping open his messages. A beat later, a wheeze escaped him, loud and unrestrained.

The other three turned toward him with puzzled expressions, poised to ask what had happened, until Ivan wordlessly turned the screen toward them. Kim Dokja caught a glimpse and let out a similar wheeze, laughter breaking through his tired facade.

"What the fuck." was all Yoo Joonghyuk could manage.

Uriel simply stared.
