Green Girl and Blue Box

Chapter 18: Into the black and white

Summary:

Elphaba finds herself in an interesting and odd place.

Notes:

I've been feeling even more anxious than I'm used to. Politics, climate change, university and this actually helps me relax. If anyone has found this story fun or interesting I'm glad that something that I've done has given you some sort of joy.

This is different from other chapters becuase is full of references so I'm gonna put a list at the end.

Take care. Hope you enjoy it. Leave a comment if you wanna talk.

Trigger/Content Warning: There is a segment of the story wich has a ton of swearing a some crude sexual imagery. It's a reference to Peter Capaldi's character in The Thick Of It (you can skip it if you want it's from My name is Mehleeza to The secretary went away whimpering)

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The gray rays of the sun washed over the grey face of one Elphaba Throop. The young woman wakes up with nervious optimism as it is her first day working in the Emerald City.

She puts on her best clothes, the black and white attire with black earrings, and in spite of herself decides to cover all bases and put on some make up. The black really makes her grey skin pop.

Elphaba makes her way down into the streets and takes a moment of respite to just see the beautiful grey shining buildings of the Emerald City. There are several other people and Animals making their way to ther jobs just like her and Elphaba steels herself for what she knows will come next.

“YEAH YEAH YEAH…..” She definishly has to get used to the singing.

All around her people and Animals start to pair off and dance and turn in circles. A particularly pampered up girl pairs up with her and continues with the singing.

“Just a typical day! That's got me feeling in a beautiful way! No rhyme or reason. We could sing a duet? Dance a style or two.”

Elphaba has no practice with dancing so she has to be lead by the other girl wich giggles innocently at her.

“Or I'll make you a bet. Just a smile will do!”

Elphaba is twirled and she gets held up by a couple of Kangoroos as to not fall. They are wearing rain coats and giant boots and one of them offers her an umbrella.

“So I throw out my worries and my old skin away! Doing what I want to, on this la dee dah dah day!”

Elphaba is the last one on the street to open and hold aloft their umbrella. A spontaneocious morning shower just appeared!

“La dee dah dah day!”

Elphaba is spun around through the crowd and the young woman awkwardly tries to follow along with the choreography. Sadly she fails and bumps into an impoverished Lion.

“Oh my, I’m so sorry!”

“Don’t worry, deary. Pay me no mind.”

The Lion quickly whip their head and body begining to dance as well.

“'Cause I may not have a home, but that's way okay! 'Cause I prefer to roam the streets all day”

The Lion began to push Elphaba around with their big form and the young woman could only follow along from the guilt of bumping into them.

“The world is my house! The dirt is my food. Oh, look- a new blouse! And a new trash tatoo!”

The strut, face and cadence of the Lion are eerily happy even as they spoke and moved through trash and dirt.

“I used to want to kill them all while high on Ozdust winkie drugs and snacking on a dead man's face.”

“Ex-excuse me?”  Elphaba said flabbergasted.

“But that just feels like yesterday. This song takes all the pain away. My politics and house views changed.”

The entire crowd moves closer with the Lion and begin to move slowly and mournfully.

“Dancing on the concrete used to hurt a lot. But now I got new feet and this jam's just way too hot!”

Elphaba and everyone else move along the grey Emerald streets until the reached the Great Emerald Palace. Elphaba makes haste and apologetically tries to make her way in.

“Do you wanna help the planet?” The crowd yells after her.

“Of course I want to help the planet!” Elphaba yells back and blows a sigh of relief from inside as she hears the remaining verses of the crowd outside.

“Well, there’s just one way you can do it! By singing a song! Singing along!...”

“Long morning, Miss Thropp?” The man guarding the elevator asks her with a grin before letting her inside.

“Just singing and dancing in the rain, Wyhli.” Elphaba sighs. “What else could one expect?”

“Well, hope you get a better afternoon my fwend…”

The Wizard’s throne room was as intimidating as always. Gargantuan pillars and beautifully adorned stained-glass windows with most of the room occupied by the omminous main piece wich the Wizard used.

Elphaba walked in carrying a wooden planer board and several stacks of paper.

“Well… Sir Wizard Sir, we have many meetings and several…”

From inside the darkened courtains wich adorned the main piece a gigantic metalic head moved out. It groaned from it’s grave and uncomfortable movements.

“…hello Sir.”

ELPHABA A A A…”

The metalic head let itself hang in the air and Elphaba manages to hear the sound of small and hurried footsteps.

“Ah ha!” From under the metalic head and from behind the grey courtains an old man with a big mop of grey hair appeared. “There you are!”

“Who in Oz’s name are you?” Elphaba after the man apperaed.

“Do you know how long I had to wait for you to appear?” The man said as he started to take something from his clothes. “Now it’s gonna be just a small moment… Now please don’t do anything you’ll regret.”

Elphaba looked at him while stunned as a collection of vases floated around her.

“I’m gonna give you three tics for you to stay put and to wait for me to call the guards-”

“Well you won’t do that becuase non of this is real!”

The man took a pair of dark sunglasses and from them a grey light washes over the entirety of the throne room bringing colour to it and giving Elphaba’s skin it’s verdigree tinge back.

All around her the room begings to vanish as soon as colour returns to it.

“Well this is troublesome…” Says the man… says the Doctor as his glasses begin to vanish as well. “I really liked those.”

“Oh… oh wow…” Elphaba struggles to stands on her woobly legs. Her hands are now empty and as she looks around her she can make out her unwelcome scenery of Munchkinland.

“Need a moment?”

“What…what was that?”

“An illusion. A very good one.” The Doctor says as he looks at the distant houses. “Whomever did this wanted us distracted.”

In the distance both of them can make out several totems and hear the explicit noise of celebration.

“And it seems we are not the only ones.”

Walking through Munchkinland was never one of Elphaba’s favourite things to do. But now, with all the celebrations and multitudes of people, Elphaba still disliked it.

The same houses she spent her childhood looking at and the same people that spent her entire childhood looking at her. She had always wished to get out of here and yet she can’t ever remain completely away.

There is something odd about the town though. There is a new and odd building. It is colourful and sturdy looking. Snacks and Gas said on it’s front and Elphaba pondered what type of person and how many of them would buy any sort of Gas for a store such as this to open in Munchkinland.

“C’mon! C’mon! C’mon! C’mon! C’mon!” The Doctor pulls her along by the arm not before grimacing at the odd building.

There was a congregation of people just outside the Governor’s mansion.

“May each and everyone of us enjoy this much desired festivities!” Frexpar made a rousing speech with much gusto and the body language that reminded Elphaba of full body spasms.

Besides him Nessarose remained sat. A firm smile on her face and a distant look on her eyes.

The crowd cheered and an explosion of colour and dust washed over them. When Elphaba aponed her eyes again the crowd had dispersed and several groups were wondering around the many activities around the town.

Nessa sat alone on her chair. She tried to move but the wheels were rusty and so anytime the younger woman managed to get closer to anyone those same people would’ve already left.

Elphaba and the Doctor tried to approach the wheeled girl but the many people around them pushed them away from her.

“I don’t have my powers here.” Elphaba said after not being able to push the people from the way.

“Well, this is Nessa’s illusion. You wouldn’t have those here.” The Doctr recieved a side eye from his student.  “Don’t look at me like that. I didn’t make the rules.”

Nessa’s form became smaller and smaller as they were pushed further into the many niceties in town.

Games, acts and food vendors lined the streets and the people moved as if they couldn’t retrace their steps.

Elphaba noticed Nessarose’s form sulkily skulking away behind the many odd stands.

“Miss.” The Doctor hands her a ball.

“Yes? I am…” Elphaba side eyes him with confusion.

“Not that way.” He points to where they are, in front of a game of toppling cans and how Nessa is well beyond behind it. “Miss.”

Elphaba throws the well above and beyond the game stand. The owner of the game stand yells angrily at them.

“Oh would you look at that? It seems we now have a reason to walk that way! We’ll get your ball back, sir!”

Their feet were able to move towards Nessa. Elphaba confused about the implified rules of this place that the Doctor seemed to know about.

They arrive at a clearing. The ball near enough for the two of them to get close to Nessa but not close enough for her to notice them.

“We can’t I talk to her? My feet feel stuck to the ground.”

“This is a world made of dreams.” The Doctor tried to explain. “I managed to get into the cracks of yours-don’t laugh-but I still had to follow along. We have to surprise her but not in a way that’ll make us at odds with the dream.”

The three of them stood silently on the cleraing and somehow the day turned to evening. From the stands music could be heard.

“Well I hope this works.” Elphaba threw the ball back woth all her might.

The music stoped for a tic before quickly starting once again and becoming louder and clearer. Elphaba threw the Doctor and herself behind a bush.

A marching band of Munchkins surrounded Nessa, one of them had a black eye from the ball Elphaba threw, and trying to intimidate Nessa began to play their instrument harder and with great passion.

“Please please please work…”

From somewhere in the sky a bunch of light focused on Nessa and the girl surprised began to look around until…

“Yesterday they opened up a new toy store.”

…she began to sing.

”And it was something right out of a dream I never had.”

Her voice resembled more Elphaba’s than herself’s. The sarcasm and contemp oozing from her and she uselessly trying to wheel herself.

“Tomorrow belongs to cherry picking, I watch them walk and pick the fields. It’s not the same.”

Nessa punches her chair with anger and with all her strenght, and to Elphaba’s shock, pushes herself from her chair.

“And life is full of all of thе trappings of such niceties!”

Nessa yells as she tries to not fall. Her arms are up at her sides and her steps are woobly.

“And life goеs on as people stand up and walk away from me… And life is fine, and sadly it is mine.”

The lights that shone on Nessa dimmed and the band began to part from there. Only one remained there enthralled by the girl’s singing.

“The other day my sister asked for our Mom’s shoes. Her’s are broken from how much she’s ran.”

As Nessa mentions her Elphaba can feel her feet becoming free from the ground’s effect.

“It was no bother, I won’t get to use them.”

The last band member steps away from the clearing and the lights stop shining on Nessa.

“I’d li-like to run. I’d like to-” Nessa finishes before her legs give out from under her and she falls to the ground.

Elphaba catches her.

Nessa is unconsolable as Elphaba holds her in her arms.

“Do-don’t leave me… please don’t leave…”

“I won’t do it Nessa. Not now. Not ever.”

Elphaba looks at Nessa. The younger sister has tears running from her eyes wich have a grey fog covering them.

“Yes you will… You don’t-you don’t know…” Nessarose goes on and on without paying attention to Elphaba or her words.

From behind them the Doctor mimics an explosion and mouth the words “surprise” at Elphaba. The green woman takes a breath a tries to have Nessa listen to her.

“Nessa… I need you to listen to me. There’s something I have to-”

“Fabala I killed our Mom…”

Elphaba tenses and grimaces at Nessa’s words.

“Dad told me how she chewed on milkflowers so I wouldn’t turn green like you… He told me how they made my birth difficult and ho-how she died becuase of it…”

Nessa’s words were slurred and cut by her heaving.

“I never met her… bu-but you did. If it wasn’t for me… I-I… I killed your Mom Elphaba…”

Tears were pouring from Elphaba’s eyes but she steeled herself. She grabbed Nessa’s head with both hands and made the younger girl look at her as she spoke.

“I knew. I’ve know about the milkflowers for… for all my life.”

Nessa tried to avert her gaze but Elphaba kept her face looking at her.

“It wasn’t your fault… and it wasn’t mine either. We didn’t get them for her and we didn’t make her chew on them. That is on her and… on Frex.”

Elphaba gulped before continuing to speak.

“Nessa, he is not my Father. Our Mom had an affair and… and that’s how I came about. But you know what? It doesn’t matter. You’re my sister and I love and you’ll have me for as long as I draw breath.”

Around them the rural scenery of Munchkinland starts to fade away and the grey fog leaves Nessa’s eyes.

“Elphaba? What is…Where…What did I say?”

“Yes she is. A dream prison scenario. Somewhere in the Vinkus. How your Mother chewed on milkflowers causing her untimely death.”

Elphaba and Nessa turned their heads to look at the Doctor. One of them was appaled the other was flabbergasted.

“Yes, sorry. I know I should be more tactfull but we gotta move. Time is of the essence and this place is affecting me. Somehow I look like a jester.”

He indeed looked like a jester. The colourful clothes clashed with his grey hair and annoyed face. It was as if a rainbow had puked on him.

Elphaba and Nessa looked at themselves and found that they also were dressed differently. The garments of Vinkun Princesses clinged to them and particularly made Elphaba’s green skin pop in contrast.

The sisters quickly exchanged words of speaking later and the group made it’s way through the Vinkun scenenary.

A giant castle was in the distance. Kiamo Ko it said on it’s massive gates.

There were no guards so they entered and they were surprised at the inside of the fortress.

A party that could only be described as bohemian and bombastic was happening through the entire place.

Young, old and in between.

Men, women and others.

Rich, poor and almost barely well off.

Colourful, grey and black and white.

There was even an odd soldier with a broom on his head flirting with a woman with more legs than body.

Each one of them danced and ate and drank without a care in the world.

“I think we all know whose dream this is.” Elphaba said. “Should we split up to find him?”

“In any other case I would say no, but I cannot move any way other than to those crying children over there.”

“WAAAAH-hic-WAAAAAHHH-”

Even Elphaba averted her gaze from there.

“Something is compelling me to try and cheer them u-” The Doctor said until he was interrupted by a bunch of colourfull balls coming from his mouth. “Good luck and remember… Surprise him but don’t destroy the narrative.”

Nessa and Elphaba move around and ask people for the Prince of the castle. They both recieve awkward looks from the guests.

The get told that there is no Prince.

They then ask who is the host of the party.

Not one of the guests seems to know who is the host.

They try to ask the servants but each one of them is either partying the night away or closes their lips when they demand for an answer.

What feels like hours seem to pass and both young women rest from their efforts. Some of the servants offer them drinks and finger foods but they pass on them.

The Doctor is now running away from the kids he tried to cheer up.

An old man throws his glass to the floor and jumps on a table. He calls for some of the guests to pick up some musical instruments and begins to sing completely out of tune.

“Dancing through life, skimming the surface gliding where turf is smooth.”

Elphaba would laugh if it wasn’t that earnest and the worst part is that soon other equally drunk people begin to sing along.

“Life's more painless for the brainless! Why think too hard when it's so soothing?”

“As if we needed any more evidence as to whose dream this is.” Elphaba mumbles and Nessa shakes her head to commiserate.

“Dancing through life, no need to tough it when you can slough it off as we do! Nothing matters, but knowing nothing matters!”

The crowd is out of tune and their dancing is as slurred as their words are. Only Elphaba and Nessa stay to the side unmovingly.

A young man quickly comes over to them and invites them to dance argueing that they shouldn’t be such wallflowers. Only Nessa accepts his offer if only to see if Fiyero is amongst the dancing guests.

Elphaba is left alone as the crowd dances. The only remaining sat person there. There’s a strange smell in the air and she grimaces.

“This is gonna get me a headache later.”

“You and me both.”

Elphaba quickly turns her head and sees Fiyero besides her with a burnt cigar between his fingers.

“Fiyero.”

“You know my name this time! Well that’s kind of you Green Girl.” Fiyero crossed his legs while on the chair and smiled. “Although I never got yours so… a bit rude on your part.”

“Elphaba.”

“Well Elphaba. It’s great to finally meet you properly.”

Fiyero offers her his hand wich she shakes. Looknig at him more clearly Elphaba can see the same grey fog on his eyes and a love sick look on his eyes. Any other time she would enjoy that look on his face but the earnest way he is just doing it makes her feel awkward.

“Why are you not with everyone else?” She quickly asks.

“I could ask you the same.”

“You are the host.”

“And you are the guest”

“Well I asked first.”

Any reaction Fiyero has to Elphaba’s quick intejections is shared with a small stupid smile and Elphaba can barely hold her gaze on him. She can’t believe she is actually missing Fiyero’s sarcastic masking.

“It just feels nice to see how everyone else has fun. Finally I can feel I’ve done something good.”

“But why not dance as well?”

“Maybe there wasn’t anyone I wanted to dance with.” Fiyero sigs and waves at how everyone else is dancing and drinking and eating. “I do love them all but they’re all still brainless.”

“Is there someone now then?”

“Yes. Yes, there is.”

The two of them continued with their intense staring at each other. Elphaba’s heart was pulsing erraticaly in her chest and yet it was Fiyero the first to avert his gaze.

“Um well…” He stood up and fidgeted awkwardly. “I really enjoyed seeing you here and our conversation, but I think I’m needed in the kitchen. Those finger food won’t make themselves… Bye!”

The Prince hastily walks away and Elphaba feels her feet being able to follow after him.

“Hey!” Elphaba yells after him. “Sorry for this, but it’s the only thing I think could work.”

“Excuse m-uhhmm…”

Around them the room and the any guests begin to fade away.

Nessa gets whirled by her dancing partner before they disappeared leaving the girl alone on the former dance floor.

The Doctor stands up from where the children had thrown him to the ground. His appareance has changed once again.

Fiyero separates from Elphaba’s grip on his clothes and breaks their kiss. The Vinkie shakes his head and blinks rapidly as the grey fog on his eyes recedes.

“Uhm… wow…”

“I can’t believe that worked.” Elphaba composed herself and checked how her clothes had also changed. A modest blouse with mild colours, but what was most surprising was the now dull and opaque office place they were in.

“I wasn’t lying when I said you were in my dreams…” Fiyero gasps as he checks his three piece suit with confusion. “How corny was I then?”

“You weren’t that bad… I just had to get used to you being earnest.”

“But it’ll ruin my image.”

“There are more important things than your image.”

“Elphaba. You hurt me!”

“Piss off with the fucking banter you emotionally stinted barely formed hormonal kids with a martyr complex!”

Nessa gasps and the Doctor holds his throat and groans. He looks surprised.

“What the fuck!? Why am I fucking swearing like a fucking moody australian teenager with fucking tourettes!?” His hands went to his head. “The wankers cut my hair as well! Cu-”

“Can’t any of these dreams just be normal?” Nessa wailed in exasperation.

The Doctor walked while diatribing words wich would bring even the most hardened individuals to gasp and clutch their pearls.

“The weirdest part of all is that this room only has three walls.” Noted Fiyero.

The four of them took a tic to gaze at the lack of a fourth wall. They all grimaced and looked confused at it until the Doctor quickly walks away.

“It’s not fucking funny! I look like a bowling pin in a suit with the fashion sense of a misoginist.”

The trio of srudents follow after him. There are people and Animals utilizing the office space now, their clothes surprisingly boring in spite of what they apparently worked on.

On each desk there were several toys and designs thrown about.

“The soul and ball sack crushing job of pandering to the most impresionable segment of the population. No one here has their soul intact.”

“Ok… why are you speaking like that?” Elphaba said.

“Fuck if I know. Whoever did this one wanted me to act like an absolute dick and it seems to be the norm in office spaces. Becuase non of these twats seem to care.”

Fiyero and Nessa looked around noticing the stressfull fog that permeated the space. Both the people and Animals seemed anxious but whenever one of them asked them about it they only deflected and said there wasn’t anything wrong.

“So this is definitely Boq’s dream.” Fiyero said.

“Absolutely.” Nessa confirmed.

“Maybe Elphaba should kiss him since it worked that well with me.” Fiyero laughed at his idea and Elphaba hit him in the back of the head.

“I’m so not doing that!”

“You can’t not admit it didn’t work. If it isn’t you then…”

“Don’t look at me! I don’t feel comfortable doing that either!” Nessa exclaimed.

“I was talking about my self.” Fiyero explained to the surprise of both girls. “What? Am I that bad of a kisser?”

“I should’ve locked all of you in a cupboard when I had the chance. You could’ve blown your heads off or blown and given he-”

The Doctor quickly put one of his hands over his mouth and moodifiedly motioned for everyone to follow after him.

They reach an ornate desk besides an even more ornate door. A bored secretary is filing her nails absentmindedly.

“Mr. Deivydson is busy with one of our newbies so if you wanna see him-”

“Listen up sweetheart, I’m already up to my tits with this one so I’m gonna makes this short.”

“My name is Mehleeza.”

“I don’t care.” The Doctor continued. “You either let us in there or I’m gonna find a Horse or any other sort of Rumiant worker you have here and I’m gonna cut off their dick after I’ve wanked them, put it in salt until it becomes desecated and I’m gonna come back here and stick in you so you feel a fraction of the annoyance I’ve felt by getting fucked by a descated horse cock!”

The secretary went away whimpering.

“Fuckity bye… gods end me now. This is worse than Peter André’s campaing to be Prime Minister…”

The group goes to the other side of the ornate door. They skulk silently and hide amongst the many bookcases, tables and desks.

The lights turn off.

A piano tune chimes.

The lights turn back on focused on the middle of the room.

And Boq sits awkwardly there while an older man sits with his back to him.

“I-It… It has been a great opportunity.. fo-for me to be here, Mr. Deivydson. Tha-thanks a lot for thi-”

“What do you want, Boq?”

The older man turns around with a manic grin. Boq returns him a surprised look. His eyes have the same grey fog that the other had.

“Ex-excuse me?”

“Tell me what you desire to see, your deepest intent, Boq. What do you see for this company?

The older man jumps over his desks and begins to pace the room while he sings. Elphaba and the other can only try and move away as to not have him find them.

“I'm looking for someone with strong ambition! Someone to sell their specific vision!”

Boq tries to stand up but Mr. Deivydson pushes him back down on his chair.

“Someone to share with precise precision their thoughts”

And then he points to his forehead, his chest and flicks Boq’s nose.

“'Cause I want you to want… to want!”

Fiyero and Nessa look around to find anything they could use but only find some pieces of broken toys. Elphaba and the Doctor cannot move.

“So what do you want Boq? What is that one particular goal that motivates all your actions?” Mr. Deivydson asks as he marches around.

“I-I don’t I have one of those.” Boq tentatively answers. “Just doing good? A partner maybe? Kids?”

“But then how is anyone supposed to empathize with you Boq?”

“Well they could-”

“I want you to want, Boq!” Mr. Deivydson cuts Boq’s answer and continues to sing. “A man so plain just can't be trusted! Something you pine for, or maybe someone who keeps you lusted!”

The older man does a crude impression of a curvy figure and then quickly gets on Boq’s personal space.

“I'm just a boss, I'm not an idea guy. I hire you, Boq, to keep our stocks high But if you can't pin that point that's in the sky!”

“Bu-but I think I ca-”

Mr. Deivydson yells on Boq’s ear.

“Then I want you to want… to want!”

Boq shake shis head from the yelling while Elphaba and the Doctor try and create something out of the broken toy pieces Fiyero and Nessa got them.

“Do you know what I want for myself?

“Can I even say no?” Boq says exasperated.

“I’ve waited for so long to tell somebody else!” Mr. Deivydson continues without noticing Boq’s annoyance. “Keiarohl, my wife! You’re my muse my source of life! Keiarohl, my love. I want you to choke my out at night”

Boq chokes.

Elphaba coughs.

Nessa pales.

Fiyero lifts an eyebrow.

The Doctor swears.

“That’s it! I’m leaving!” Boq yells with impatience. He stands up and moves as if to get out of the room.

“No, Boq! I want you here if you leave you’re fired.” Mr. Deivydson threatens him.

“Then fire me! I don’t care!” Boq answers with uncommon intensity. “What if I don’t have any sort of grand purpose for my life? I-It’s fine!”

The room shakes with his words and some of the desks and tables begin to fade.

“I’m not a leader! I don’t want to be one! I don’t want power or responsabilities. Or at least not world defining responsabilities!”

Mr. Deivydson becomes tinier and tinier as Boq continues to speak.

“I don’t have ambition, I don’t want ambition! I’m fine with being simple! I’ll do the amount of good I can do with my life, nothing more or less, and that’ll be good!”

The grey fog on Boq’s eyes starts to fade away as well wich makes him blink rapidly.

“I don’t need or want much… I have more than enough now… and maybe that’s not enough for you but i-it’s…”

The room fades away on it’s own and Elphaba and the others can come out of their hiding place. Boq looks confused at them and at his surroundings wich have change alongside their clothes.

They now find themselves at Shiz’s library dressed in deep purple clothes.

“…it’s enough for me?”

Boq looks at Elphaba.

Elphaba looks at Nessa.

Nessa looks at Fiyero.

Fiyero looks at Boq.

Boq looks at the Doctor.

“Well… we were apparently inconsecuential to you getting free from your dream.” The Doctor says as he looks at his apparel. “Finally, I’m normal again.”

“Sh-should I be concerned? Or do I need to focus now and freak out later?”

They all share a quick look of conversation.

“The latter.” The other three students said at the same time.

The Shiz library is empty but for them and the group quickly moves to find their remaining member.

“…but why is everyone else singing?” Boq asks as he gets caught up to speed.

“Absolutely no idea.” Fiyero says in earnest.

“Maybe… whoever made these thought it would intice us to make us stay?” Nessa offered.

“It still doesn’t make any sense.” Said Elphaba.

They leave the library unto the main courtyard where they see even more students wearing the same deep purple clothes.

“Elphie!!!”

A wave of students dressed in purple barreled towards them.

“Nessa is so good to see you!”

“I love your skin today, Elphie! Is it grass or moss or…”

“There’s gonna be a party at the Ozdust tonight! Do any of you wanna go?”

“Doctor! We need more time for the homework you gave us!”

“B-Boq wo-would… would you like to study with me?”

Each and everyone of the students spoke with a sacharine tone wich irked Elphaba.

“Have any of you seen Galinda?” She asked the overly sweet students.

“Oh no!”

“Who cares about her!?”

“The pink desaster?”

“But Elphie, why would you ask for Ga-”

The purple dressed students spoke ill about Galinda and Elphaba and the others quickly barreled through them. Their patience thinning.

“It seems our dear Elphie has some matters to settle with the Peachy Princess.”

The students laughed aloud but Elphaba and her group payed them no mind.

Across the courtyard even more students dressed in purple followed after them forming an arrow like shape around the main group with Elphaba at the front.

“Any second now they’ll start to si-” The Doctor grumbled under his breath.

“Oh dear Elphaba you are just too good!”

“Called it!”

The students twirled around and banged on their books. Backpacks were tossed over heads and Elphaba and her friends did their best to follow along.

“How can you stand it I don’t think I could!”

“So Galinda’s dream is to spat with you again? Doesn’t feel righ-” Boq was cut by one student throwing themselves at him and having to raised them over his head. Elphaba could only commiserate silently with his point.

“She’s a terror! She’s a tartar! We don’t mean to show a bias but Elphaba you’re a martyr!”

“Well… thanks for thinking so highly of me.” Elphaba said slowly. “But i don’t think of her that way. Maybe we can just leave this stuff behind and just get along becuase honestly I’m tired of our altercations.”

“Such braverisms!”

“You’re an inspiration Elphie!”

“She doesn’t deserve you!”

The students gave her a great round of applause. Elphaba rolled her eyes and got inside Shiz’s lunch hall.

Inside there were even more people dressed in purple, at least half it’s occupants, and the other half was dressed in a loud shade of pink.

As Elphaba opened the door on one side of the lunch hall another door was opened on the other side making al lof the students turn their heads one way to the other.

Galinda stood a lunch hall away from Elphaba followed after by the same ocean of people wich followed Elphaba. Galinda’s eyes had the grey fog on them.

“Let’s see how this one goes.” Elphaba said to her friends as soon as the students dispersed and began to sing once again. Their singing was followed by Galinda’s own pinkly dressed people singing too.

“Poor Ga-lin-da/El-pha-ba, forced to reside with someone so disgusticified. We just want to tell you, we're all on your side!”

Tables were getting standed upon and food projectiles were being readied on their hands, but with a blink the lunch hall changed to the battle courtyard.

“We share your loathing!”

Attack. Parry. Repose. Defend. Elphaba had to answer each and everyone of Galinda’s attempts at hitting her.

“What is this feeling, so sudden and new?”

A blink and they are now at Alchemy class. The Doctor had to jump in between of them to protect them from the fumes and foams of some sort of prank bomb experiment.

“Unadulterated loathing!”

“I felt the moment I laid eyes on you.”

Now they were ccrossing wands at Dr. Dillamonds class. Sparks of pink and purple clashed and a student got turned into a mass of bubles.

“My pulse is rushing.”

Elphaba and Galinda held swords to eachother necks daring the other one to act.

“My head is reeling.”

Elphaba crawled out from a sea of foam and got to see Galinda hacing to wipe foam from her entire face. She still had pristine make up somehow!

“My face is flushing!”

The contents of a glass of water got thrown to both of them by the other.

“We loathe it all!” The Pink and Purple students cease their inter-fighting to yell.

“Oh, what is this feeling?” Galinda and Elphaba say at the smae time.

“Wait a tic!” Boq yells and clutches his head in astonishment and enlightenment. “I know what this is! I know wha-“

“Loathing!” Boq is cut by the yelling of the entire lunch hall.

“And I will be loathing for forever.” Elphaba says with visible conflict on her face.

“Loathing truly deeply.” In contrast Galinda has a cheerful smile.

“Loathing you.” Elphaba finishes.

“Loathing you!” Galinda continues.

Swords.

Explosions.

Fighting over chairs.

Throwing books at each other.

Pulling the other’s hair.

A ball of mashed potatoes to the face.

Elphaba’s friends end up with nausea from changing scenary that fast and frequently.

“My whole life lo-” Elphaba says but she is cut by Galinda pulling her by the sides of her head.

Elphaba can compare Galinda’s kissing to Fiyero and detects several difference. If Fiyero kisses slowly and waits for Elphaba to give him any openings Galinda makes her own openings and kisses as if it is the last time she will be able to.

There is a hunger to this kiss. One that Elphaba can’t say she dislikes but that she would need to get use to.

“Muaaaaaah!”

“…aah…”

“Ah…hahaha…” Galinda’s voice is airy and whispy as she laughs. Her face is as lovesick as Boq’s used to be and her eyes still have fog on them. She turns to the entire lunch hall. “That was great everybody! Fabulecious work! Though Ferrina and Shiu, you guys need to measure yourselfs. You almost fainted  back there…”

“Uhmmm… uh…” Elphaba stood flabbergasted.

“So? What do you wanna do now?” Galinda side hugged Elphaba while doing the greatest simpering Boq impression she could. “There is a new café in town. Or maybe we could go to the museum?”

“But you don’t like museums.” Elphaba questioned.

“Oh yes, but I’ll have you to educate me won’t I?” Galinda said whilst flapping her eyelashes.

“I’ll reiterate. Cupboard. Would’ve solved all of this.” The doctor said as he cleaned himself from the alchemical prank.

“I’m such a bad friend. How could I not notice this!?” Boq exclaimed.

“You’re not a bad friend. You’re just dense as bricks.” Fiyero patted him on the back. “But Galinda still has that… thing on her eyes. Apparently Elphaba’s kisses are not that powerful, so now how do we-”

Snip-Snip!

“Oh!” Galinda cried as she felt her head losing weight. Her hands going to her nape and finding a great lack of hair.

“Here you have it!” Nessa gave the blonde her hair back. “Surprising insn’t? Who would have thought that the swords would stay while changing scenes?” She said whilst twirling a rapier.

Galinda fell to her knees whilst unconsolably mourning her hair.

The lunch hall and everyone but the six of them began to fade away. Only a void of pure white space remained.

“Wait… where am I? What am I-” Galinda’s eyes became clear again. Those same eyes became enlarged as she sees Elphaba and the others. “Oh! Di-did… did all of that happen?

“Oh yes it did!” From behind them stood a lonely grey figure. They had a tense smile on their face and their limbs were held awkwardly. “All of that did happen!”

“And who you might be?” The Doctor asked as he put himself between the students and the being.

“I’m the one who made all these dreams.” The figure spun and in a blink of an eye changed appareance. “Did you have a long day Miss Elphaba? Or maybe…”

The figure changed from Elphaba’s elevator guard to Frex’s condescending visage.

“I’ve always been disappointed in you.”

Nessa wilted under his stare until Frex changed to one of the kids of Fiyero’s castle.

“Hahahahaha!!!”

The little kid aged decades in tics and turned into Mr. Deivydson.

“What do you want Boq!”

The being returned to their original form.

“I had really outdone myself to keep you all here. All that effort wasted.”

Each student braced themselves as the figure spoke with a mocking tone.

“But now I might as well try again, my fwends!”

The odd figure spun once again and from it all of the other shapes it took flew towards them. The white void floor separated them by becoming a maze.

A thunderours sound and a shaking of the ground makes Elphaba brace herself and as a massie flood of water appears turning the corner she sprints away.

Elphaba can hear the yelling of everyone else from the other sides of the maze.

“Boq! Elphaba!”

“Nessa!”

“Galinda!”

“Fiyero! Elphie!”

“Doct-”

A hand grabs her and pulls her to one of the many dead ends of the maze. The Doctor puts a hand to hi slips to signal silence to her.

Over them flies the chimeric being. A cackling laugh coming from the now five mouths. The heads of Frex and of that of a small child wailing threaths.

“We can talk now… but very quietly.”

“Non of this make sense.” Elphaba  seethes. “What even are they?”

“The creator of these dreams. But we should’ve woken up already.” The Doctor put it to Elphaba. “All of us know this is a dream! We’ve woken everyone up!”

Elphaba thought hard and fast about everything had happened and amidst all the noise and yelling and chaos she arrived to a conclusion.

“Everyone but you…”

The Doctor stood silent for a tic until he grimaced.

“No… no that’s not possible. I woke you up.”

“But who did that to you? How did you get to the Wizard’s chambers?

“I don’t know!”

“There you are!”

The Doctor and Elphaba sprint away from the dream being. Now they have tentacles and a cape made of pure green over them.

“You better start to know then!”

“It’s not that easy.”

They can hear several unwelcoming noises of pain and destruction from the other side of tha maez’s walls.

“Don’t you wanna live in your perfect world Elphaba!? I can make it happen! Out of the depths of hell and back we spawn of the black and white…”

“That was not a perfect world! Not even close!”

“Of course it wasn’t! I was there instead of the Wiza-That’s it!”

A ball of fire is thrown their way and Elphaba tackles the Doctor to a safe place round a corner.

“You can’t hide from me Elphaba! I can see everythi-OWWW! WHO THREW THAT ROCK!?”

“Come here and bite me you overgrown sack of puss!” Fiyero screamed from somewhere far from them.

“AURRRGH!!!!!”

The chimeric being turned around and began to breath fire towards a different part of the maze.

“Fiyero our hero.”

“You’ve never actually seen the Wizard have you?” The Doctor asked as he caught his breath.

“No, I haven’t.”

“So that thing must’ve had to improvise to make your dream. Honestly, I’m flatered you think of me like that.”

“Doctor, please speak clearly. I’m not following.”

“I’m not the real Doctor!” He said with utmost glee. “I’m a copy! A perfect copy made to supplant the Wizard in your dream! That’s why you are all still here! Your dream’s not finished!”

He patted his clothes looking for something and he laughed when he found it. A longer than possible rapier from his clothes.

“Perfect copy indeed.” He said before handing Elphaba the rapier. “If you could do the honours.”

“You can’t be seriously asking me to do this!”

“Well it’s either me or everyone else!”

His words were followed by an impressive amount of swearing made by Galinda’s shrill voice.

“If you’re wrong I’m gonna kill you.”

“But you’re gonna do that anyway.”

The Doctor offred her a tentative smile and Elphaba reciprocated by with an anxious one. She held the rapoer firmly in her gras pan then…

“Oh my I hope you’re right!”

…she stabbed him.

“…phaba!”

“Elphaba!” The Doctor yells.

Elphaba wakes up to the harsh Vinkun dessert sun. Behind her there is a massive wall of verdant fog and in front of her her friends seem to be waking up as well.

“How are you feeling?”

“Odd.” Elphaba says bereft of any better descriptor. “What happened?”

“You breathed the fog. You entered a sleep like state and wouldn’t wake up. Well not only you.”

Elphaba notices that all the soldiers and the Tivolin woman are standing as still as statues.

“The box’s defense mechanism got to us first and it got all of them. The other and I moved you to this clearing and then you somehow woke up before I couldn’t even do anything.”

Elphaba puts one of her hands to her forehead and looks at where her friends are being taken care for by Dillamond and the others. She catches Galinda’s eyes and the blonde hirl flinches and averts her gaze.

“Anything interesting happened there?”

“No.” She quickly answered.

“Keep your secrets. I don’t need them.” The Doctor clapped his hands and made everyone still conscious look at him. “Now that non of you are dead I think we should checj out the reason why we came here.”

A box made out entirly out of black material stood eerely in the middle of the clearing.
