Chapter Text
I walked up to the apartment and knocked on the door. I checked to make sure my costume was fully together and I had my hidden recording device recording as well as all of the evidence that I was given from the family before there was an answer. The woman was smaller than Izumi but had a bit more chubbiness on her. The long green hair told me that she was her mother.
“Um, hello, who are you?” she asked.
“Hello, I’m the underground hero Arrowette,” I said, taking out my card and showing it to her.
“Oh, um, what can I do for you?” she asked, handing it back after looking at it.
“Did your daughter not mention running into me?” I asked, slightly concerned.
“No, I’m sorry if she ruined a mission or something you were on. I knew her habit of stalking heroes and taking notes on them would get her in trouble someday,” she started with a heavy sigh.
“Oh, no, actually Mrs. Midoriya,” I countered. “She impressed me with her analytical mind in a situation. Because of her we were able to take the villain down. She has the heart of a hero and I wouldn’t be surprised if she could give a professional analysts a run for their money.”
“You mean those weird notes she takes?” she asked, as if the thought of them was off putting.
“If she takes notes of heroes I would have to see them as I just saw and heard her muttering how to take the villain down,” I said, leaving out the fact she also interfered. “I would like to help her and train her to use the knowledge she has for good, to be a hero.”
“Oh, I-I’m sorry but she can’t be a hero Ms. Arrowette,” the woman said, her voice soft and almost motherly, almost.
“Oh, and why’s that?” I asked, glad that this was already going how I wanted it to so I would have enough evidence against her.
“She’s quirkless, she can barely do anything in school by the looks of her grades. Even then, her quirklessness automatically makes it impossible. I mean, it’s a disability.”
“So, you are a quirkist and have to deal with raising a quirkless child?” I asked. “Or does quirk discrimination not count for you since the quirk lacks existence?”
“How dare you say such a thing? I love my daughter!” she yelled.
“You love her, but act as if she’s a weak and fragile thing that is incapable of doing anything by herself?” I asked. “And even then, I figured something was off so I reached out to some of your extended family and what they told me about your relationship with your daughter after her diagnosis is concerning.”
“She can’t! She can’t do anything dangerous like that! She’ll die while she’s still young and become broken anytime she tries to save anyone! This is just a fact, one that can’t change! And I don’t care what those assholes say! They removed me from the family because of her! My life was perfect before she came around!”
“Then you force my hand,” I sighed, not wanting to do this but knowing I had to. “Hero License: UG1563896564Z codename Arrowette, removing minor Izumi Midoriya from mother Inko Midoriya. Reasons; Quirk Discrimination, Mental Abuse, Child Neglection, and possibly other reasons pending investigation,” I said.
“You can’t take my child! She’s my baby! You’re barely older than her!” she started yelling.
“Ma’am, legally I can and just did,” I said. “As an underground hero I have an emergency fostering license, which means I have to be able to provide for a child and the HPSC and child protection services have determined me to be able to. Even then that’s if none of her family decides to stand up and take her in and some of them have already said they would if needed. You can get her back, but you will have to earn it by going to therapy,” I explained.
“Y-you’re taking me?” a small voice asked.
I turned to see Izumi poking her head out from around the corner.
“She isn’t, I’m going to fight this in court!” the elder Midoriya said.
“Yes I am, you can fight this in court, but until then she will live with her cousin since she was the first to ,” I said. “We can load your stuff in my car, I have some boxes I have to keep on hand for things like this.”
“A-alright,” the younger one said, going to her room.
“You can’t honestly be doing this!” she asked.
“I am because I have to as part of my job. Now, I’m going to go get those boxes, don’t do anything you’ll regret,” I said. I went out and grabbed the collapsable boxes and came up to find the door closed and locked. “Mrs. Midoriya, open this door now before I have to add obstructing official hero work to your list.”
“You won’t take my daughter from me, she’s mine!” the woman yelled.
“Mom, stop, she needs to do this, it’s her job,” the younger voice said. “And we both know what she said was true.”
“How dare you say that? I have shown you nothing but love and respect ever since you got diagnosed with your disability!”
“And yet you failed to notice the scars! The constant burn marks! You say you love me but never truly paid attention to me , just my quirklessness,” the younger girl said. “And don’t say you loved or respected me! You just act like it when others are around but I’m the one who has to deal with going to bed hungry because you don’t feel like giving me dinner. I have to put up with having nothing of my own because you don’t feel like wasting money in your own words.”
“I’m only going to say this one more time, open up this door,” I said, already having some officers on their way with a text.
“NO! She’s my daughter and only saying these things because you put them into her head. I love her, she might not be able to do anything but I still love her like a mother should,” she said.
“Izumi, get back,” I said, stepping back before kicking the door in. I pulled my bow out and knocked a special arrow. “Inko Midoriya, you are under arrest for interfering with official hero business,” I said, aiming the arrow at the woman. I shot the arrow but it froze midair.
“You dare, break into my house, try to take my daughter, and then you attack me?” the woman asked. “You aren’t a hero, you’re just a child on a power rush from getting a license,” she said, as the arrow turned to me and shot forward.
I closed my eyes and braced for it to hit me, but it didn’t and I heard the woman who threw it at me with her quirk scream. I opened my eyes and was looking at the back of long, green, curly hair.
“Crap, Izumi?” I asked, catching her as she fell back.
“G-glad I c-could s-save you l-like you s-saved me,” she said, smiling.
I looked and noticed that the arrow had sent all of the energy into her chest. I quickly looked to see the woman charging me with a knife. I threw a small disc at her and activated the electric shock it delivered and knocked her out. I then pulled out my work phone.
“I need an ambulance at my location immediately. This is the hero Arrowette,” I said, before giving the address as well as my id number while also trying to stop the bleeding. I then called Kaina.
“Yumi, is everything alright? Are you bringing Izumi to the mansion yet?” she asked.
“No, shit hit the fan. Her mother tried to prevent me so I shot a concussive blast arrow at her but she caught it with her quirk and shot it back at me. Izumi then intercepted it with her body. Ambulances are on the way. I'll message you the hospital as soon as I know which one,” I said.
“Don’t bother, tell them to take her to Hero’s Retreat and tell them that the CEO of Meka Enterprises demands that they care for her. I’ll get there in a few minutes.”
“Really? Going to use your company’s ownership of the hospital to make them help?” I asked, trying to keep calm.
“Yes, I am, take care of her please.”
“Of course,” I said, hanging up.
I sat there holding the girl who was no more than four years younger than me who was also bleeding out. I kept adding some of the white cloth I had to stop the bleeding. After a couple of moments the EMTs and police got here. I explained what happened and while the police took the mother away the EMTs loaded Izumi into the ambulance. I got on too and rode with them as I was already technically her “guardian angel” in the eyes of the law. We got to a hospital and they rushed her into an operating room as I stayed in the waiting room. I looked at the time and dialed a number on my phone while sighing.
“Hello, Yumi, to what do I owe the pleasure of this call?” Nezu asked.
“I’m not going to make it to the meeting, that meeting I told you I had before went south and now I’m in the waiting room,” I said.
“Please, do tell me what happened,” he said.
So I told him the story starting with my first meeting with Izumi on the roof and everything she told me as well as what her extended family did to what just happened.
“After my concussion arrow was stopped and sent back at me she jumped in and the arrow managed to misfire and just shattered in her chest rather than sending a full shockwave,” I said.
“I see, so you are waiting since you are now her guardian angel until her family or new guardian arrives. This is fine, let me know if there is anything I can do to help,” he said.
“Actually, about what she said about the teachers not doing anything to help, could you look into Aldara schools? That’s the uniform she was wearing,” I explained.
“Yes, I always have enjoyed taking down corruption,” he said, cackling like a madman.
“Just do right by this kid, I know I shouldn’t have to say this, but don’t get caught up and try taking down the whole Department of Education,” I sighed.
“Alright, but there could be some backlash from this, so be prepared,” he said, hanging up.
“I’ll never get used to that,” I muttered.
“Yumi!” a voice called out, rushing over to me.
“Kaina, I-I’m so sorry,” I said, rushing over and hugging my friend.
“It’s fine, sorry I went to the viewing room to watch her during the surgery,” Kaina explained.
“Excuse me, are you the hero in charge of Miss Midoriya?” a doctor asked. “Oh, Ms. Tsutsumi, you’re her cousin right?”
“Yes, is she alright?” Kaina asked.
“She is going to be perfectly fine, however, while we were operating we noticed some concerning scars and marks on her body,” he said, cautiously.
“I hate asking this, but could you please document all of them as well as potential causes for each of them. I am currently investigating something that involves her and need as much of this information you can get me,” I said, knowing he would understand.
“Of course, I will have one of our female nurses do it just in case she wakes up while they are doing so,” he said, walking off.
“Kaina-”
“Alfred has a change of clothes for you in the car, I already told the agency that you would have the rest of the day off patrol,” she said with a small smile.
“Thanks, and I’m sorry again,” I said.
“Don’t worry about it.”
POV Kaina Tsutsumi
I sat next to the hospital bed that my younger cousin laid unconscious on. It had been roughly ten years since I last saw her. She had grown up to be a beautiful young girl, but I also knew how she was treated. I had a PI keep an eye on her incase it got too bad. I would have done it myself but my current … lifestyle doesn’t leave me much time to get out of Gotham, which sucks since it’s just on the other side of UA. It wasn’t a very conventional city given when and why it was created, to house all of the people who developed quirks early on in their appearance. There were statues of men holding up highways, and there were raised train tracks that went everywhere in the city basically. I was running our family’s company while also doing some nightly activities.
“Hmm,” a groan pulled me out of my thoughts.
“Hey Izumi,” I said as she opened her eyes.
“K-Kaina?” she asked.
“How are you feeling?”
“Like I got hit by a truck,” she muttered.
“Those concussive force arrows can do that to you,” I chuckled, recalling that time I accidentally set one off in the range when designing them.
“W-why are you here?” she asked.
“I’m close friends with the hero that found you. I talked with her and for now I’m going to be taking you in,” I explained, trying to find a way to continue my other activities.
“R-really? A-am I actually getting away from her ?”
“Yeah kid, you are,” I said, smiling a bit.
A few minutes later Yumi walked in wearing street clothes after knocking.
“How are you feeling kid?” she asked.
“U-um, good, Arrowette right?” she asked.
“Yup, I don’t look too different out of costume do I?” she asked jokingly.
“N-no, I um just wanted to thank you.”
“Hey, don’t worry about it. If anything I should thank you for saving me. However, wait until you’re a pro hero before doing something like that again,” she said.
“Oh, you want to be a hero?” I asked, recalling an odd combination of old laws I could potentially abuse a bit for her.
“Y-yeah, I don’t care if I’m quirkless but I want to do it. I’m just not sure of how. Um, you live in Gotham right?” she asked, looking at me.
“Yes.”
“Well, I kinda want to be like the new vigilante or underground hero Batwoman.”
“Why suggest she’s an underground hero?” I asked.
“Well, she acts similar to one but with how few heroes go near Gotham it’s possible that she’s just a vigilante or an underground hero.”
“Interesting thoughts,” I said, unsure of what to do other than talking to Nezu.
AN-
Well, chapter two is out! Taking a small different approach to her becoming a hero like the Bat. Now, does Izumi become Batgirl or Black Bat? Or does she go with a different Batfam name? Spoiler, Orphan, Robin, Huntress, Flamebird, Hawkfire, Batwing, Bluebird, etc. (I know a lot about Batman and the Batfam, sue me!) Also, if you got any ideas don’t be afraid to share them! No idea is a bad idea, except for giving her a quirk or quirk-like power because that’s out of the question for this fic! Make sure to follow, favorite, comment, and kudos! Link Out!
