Work Text:
Tonight was a special occasion, something they didn't do all that often. They'd gone out to eat, scraping up enough cash between the two of their shitty part time jobs to actually go out and eat somewhere half decent.
It was nice. They were both pretty excited about this. Neither of them were super great at cooking– Sean was much worse than Jake, and so they were living mostly off of low quality microwaveable meals and ramen, the stereotypical college kid meal.
So this was different! A nice, nourishing meal that would actually do them some good. Jake doesn't think he's ever seen Sean this happy to be out somewhere in public, and it's making him happy in return.
They sat at the table, savoring the food. They aren't able to order the biggest, best thing on the menu– but they're able to settle for a filling burger each, both with a side of fries.
Sean is more focused on his food than Jake– while Jake is focusing more on Sean, picking at his fries while Sean is devouring his entire plate. He's eating like it's been years since he'd had a decent meal.
Jake savors his food, and they sit there for a good hour, just eating. They share minimal conversation, Sean finishing long before Jake. The distraction of Sean along with the fact he'd always been a slow eater kept him there for a while.
Sean's cheek is resting in his hand, lazily browsing a menu– when all of a sudden, his face lights up.
“Hm?” Jake hums, and sets down his burger on the plate, looking to Sean, curious what had caused the sudden excitement.
“Milkshakes, Jake. They have milkshakes.” Sean tells him, excited.
“Really?” He raises his eyebrows, “What flavors? How much?” He asks, a little excited.
“They have cookies and cream. Jake, I need this…” Sean stresses playfully, eliciting a laugh from Jake, who shakes his head.
“Well– how much, Sean? We gotta pay for em.” He shakes his head.
“Like… five dollars...” He hums sheepishly.
Jake's eyes widened. “Jesus..! For a milkshake?” He asks, a little stunned.
Sean nods.
“Well… jeez. I dunno if we can–” he sighs, hating to let down Sean like that. Sean doesn't look discouraged though, the cogs in his brain already working overtime to provide a solution.
He's silent for a bit, deep in thought, before he finally gives him a triumphant look.
“I got it. We don't have to pay, because we'll get it on the house,” Sean sits back in his chair, smirking.
“Sean… please, tell me how you intend to get free milkshakes.” Jake sighs with a smile, shaking his head. He goes to take a sip of his drink.
“I'm going to propose to you.” He says bluntly.
Jake almost spits out his drink, coughing as he swallows. “I'm sorry, what?” He laughs, because it's such an absurd idea.
But Sean slips off one of the few rings he wore on his hands, he's being completely serious. “I will do anything for that milkshake, Jake,” he smiles. “You're a decent actor, right? You can play along,” he waves off any of Jake's concerns.
Sean does it like it's second nature, slipping out of his seat, walking over to Jake, and getting down on one knee, smiling up at him as he presents the same ring he'd been wearing only a minute or two ago.
“Jake,” Sean's voice is loud, obviously trying to attract some attention, because damn it, he wants a cookies and cream milkshake.
“...yeah?” Jake squeezes the words out, definitely a little flustered, having the boy he's liked for ages his best friend get down on one knee in front of him. It was jarring, but he wanted Sean to get this, so he played along. He also could go for a milkshake, honestly. Strawberry… that sounded delicious right about now.
“Will you make me the happiest man on earth, and marry me, please?” Sean asks, his voice sickly sweet, all just a fake act. Jake couldn't be upset– Sean would only ever act out like this if he wanted something. It was funny.
“Oh my gosh, yes!” Jake cheers, and even hops up out of seat. He can sell this, and Sean looks amused. Sean slips the ring onto his hand, and they share a lengthy hug– because they weren't going to kiss… that'd just be a little weird.
A few tables around them clap, and Jake can see Sean startle, and grow red. There was a lot more eyes on them than he'd expected.
But it was all worth it, because it works like a charm. By the end of the night, the two of them are walking home, milkshakes in hand as they laugh about the absolute insanity that had just gone on in the restaurant.
