Betrayal and Loyalty

Summary:

Fitz is Hydra, gets disillusioned, tries to prove loyalty to shield

Simmons is unsure if Fitz is pretending to be loyal(after they find out he's HYDRA)

Also non-cannon compliant

Chapter 1: Near Failure

Leo was very nervous.

 

He was working in his Lab in the morning. Then one of his fellow undercover HYDRA colleagues told him to check their communications system, he got a message.

 

The message read

Agent Coulson is alive. He is assembling a team. He wants you on it.

Beware Grant Ward, he is a fellow comrade.

Gain everyone's trust

 

It was very ominous.

 

A few days later, he met Agent Coulson in their head office in the UK, he hated London as any good Scot would.

But if it was for the cause, he would suffer the city.

 

He entered the office, it's walls we're made of glass.

He assumed the man in front of him was Coulson.

 

The man gestured him to the chair.

 

He sat down.

 

The man introduced himself

"I'm Agent Coulson. Do you know why you're here?"

 

I responded as confident as I could.

"I heard rumors I was being assigned to some team."

 

He seemed a bit surprised. Fitz immediately knew he fucked up.

 

His first real undercover mission and he fucked it up without even starting. Of course he did.

Just like his father said as a kid

You'll always be a fucking disgrace.

 

Then Coulson talked again

"I'm told you're the best. I want the best. Your position is guaranteed. Email me everything you need.

 

Oh before I leave just so you know, your fellow scientist is Jemma Simmons. I believe that she was in your year."

 

Leo was relieved that he didn't fail his very first field op before it began. He was sweating at the thought of what would happen.

 

He believed that HYDRA would do good for the world but he wasn't stupid enough to think they wouldn't punish him severely.

 

 

 

 

Chapter 2: My colleague?

Chapter Text

Gemma was excited to finally be on field team. She was tired of the lab.

 

She was told to come to the air field.

 

She came and saw that there was a brown haired person loading stuff.

 

She was mentally checking her list to figure out who it was.

 

Coulson? No, too bald(Don't let anyone hear her thoughts)

May?No, not a woman

Ward?No, too muscular 

Fitz? Has to be

 

She was actually quite interested in meeting him.

Would he have an ego and be frustrating to work with? Would he sabotage her? Be a nuisance in general??

 

 And then the fact he's scottish. Oh the bickering they'll have. It'll be a delight.

Just so you all know

I do not have the time, will, and general skill to rework EVERY episode

So plan is, everything will follow cannon

I'll use flashbacks occasionally.

Chapter 3: Malware

Fitz woke up in the middle of the night. Finding Ward standing directly above him.

 

Fitz had always been a light-sleeper, he had to be one to escape his fathers anger.

 

Ward just stood there menacing before he finally talked. "Get up, HYDRA needs you. We need a backdoor into the system."

Fitz responded "So a malware. Okay simple enough. I'll get on it in the morning."

 

Ward just responded "Yeah sure whatever." He then walked off to his own quarters.

It was a slow day on the bus. No bloody aliens, no bloody 084s, no bloody Centipede.

 

Truthfully he doesn't know why they work with CENTIPEDE. CENTIPEDE is just plain bloody incompetent.

 

He immediately recognized the HYDRA tech when he started actually analyzing CENTIPEDE.

He started working on the malware at noon. He was certainly no Skye with computers but his skills were more than adequate.

 

Then a thought came from the back of the mind.

Is HYDRA good for everyone? I saw exactly what CENTIPEDE was doing. HYDRA is worse. They'll kill all his friends. He didn't have friends before. But now he does. Especially Jemma.

He needed something in case he had second thoughts.

After another hour, the malware was finished.

 

If he ever had second thoughts, he would activate the "kill switch" and remove the USB from the server.

 

Now he had to put the usb in the bus' server. Simple.

He entered the server room at night.

 

He went to one of the servers in the back.

 

He opened the port up and pulled the drive out. He thought No turning back now. If I'm caught now, I'll probably be executed or something. Everyone will hate me.

Then a voice came from the back of his head You stupid boy. Always weak and pathetic. Never wanting to commit to anything. 

His father made his blood boil but he desperately craved his approval. He wanted it so badly. Maybe this could show him he could make tough decisions. Be a man for one.

 

He inserted the USB.

Chapter 4: Comfort

Chapter Text

After Skye almost died, Jemma wanted everyone on the crew to be like some family.

 

Then she realized Fitz was always distant. Only connecting with her when working together.

 

She wanted to know why.

Jemma walked to Fitz's room.

It was small like everyone's. The perks of living on a plane.

 

She knocked and he yelled "Come in!"

 

Shee looked around and saw a photo of him with a woman with brown hair.

Fitz with his mother

She guessed it was his mother.

 

Fitz then spoke "So what did you need me for?"

 

She responded "I was wondering why you're always so distant. You almost never eat food with us. Always holed up in your "room." You only talk with us occasionally."

 

Leo just said "People don't really like me so I stay away."

 

Jemma was a bit saddened by that. He seemed perfectly likeable. Just a bit awkward.

 

She just asked "Who would say that? You're perfectly nice."

She then remarked teasingly "Bit handsome too."

 

Then she noticed him blush for a few seconds before he just said "My dad."

 

Jemma immediately wanted to hug him now. His own father didn't love him. So she did. Fitz was a bit tense at first but he allowed it.

 

She thought He seems lonely. He needs a friend.

 

She wanted the conversation to keep going so she pointed at the picture. "I'm assuming it's you with your mother."

 

The brown-haired scot just replied "Yeah."

 

They spent the rest of the day talking.

 

He even ate dinner with the rest of the team for once. She was happy she brought him out of his shell.

Chapter 5: Insight

Leo didn't want to work for HYDRA anymore.

 

They were probably gonna kill all his friends.

 

In the past few weeks he had actually gotten close to them.

 

Simmons especially, she was the one who got him out of his shell after all.

 

So he finally made his mind up. He would activate the kill switch on the malware. But that left the problem of Ward.

 

Ward would definitely try and stop him. 

 

Ward was certainly able to kill anyone. He killed the decoy Clairvoyant with no qualms. An elderly, disabled man who put up no resistance at all. A complete decoy who did absolutely nothing to anyone. Garett was still roaming.

 

He certainly would have no qualms killing him. Poor old Fitz. Who's own father hated him.

 

Then he came up with an idea. Leak HYDRA too. Coulson would probably protect him from Ward if he knew about HYDRA and that he was leaving them.

At 3 in the morning, Fitz woke up and snuck in to the server room.

 

He went to the port he stuck the USB in earlier. He connected his laptop with the server.

 

He inputted the kill switch code, Turing.

He chose Turing mostly because of how much he admired him. He was willing to look past his Englishness.

 

Now he had to reveal HYDRA. Easier to make Simmons admit that he's smarter than to do that.

 

He remembered as many HYDRA operatives as he could and put em all in a file and just before he put it in the system he felt something grab his neck.

 

In less than 10 seconds he passed out cold. Before he even realized what was happening.

 

Chapter 6: Betrayal

Jemma was awoken at 4 in the bloody morning. Apparently, Fitz did something, and Ward caught him in the act.

Jemma was confused but she walked into the meeting room in her pajamas. Too tired to give a care about her clothing right now.

They were now waiting for May to come. Coulson was getting her.

Coulson and May finally came.

 

Coulson started the meeting off by saying ¨You can all probably notice that Fitz isn´t here.¨

Everyone looked around tensely. They could feel something happen. Jemma was more concerned about whether Leo was OK.

 

Coulson continued ¨Fitz is a traitor to SHIELD. He installed malware on the servers. Ward found him in the act of deleting all evidence. Skye, I need you to make sure the malware is gone completely¨

Skye nodded in understanding.

May then finally spoke ¨Simmons, make sure Fitz is alright. We need him ready for interrogation. He´s in the Cage. Ward got him pretty good.¨

Jemma nodded. She cared enough about Fitz to make sure he was fine. But he´s a traitor, she reasoned; she wouldn´t give him the best care. Maybe he only became friendly to them to gain their trust.

She entered the Cage. 

 

Fitz was spread across the table.

 

She immediately noticed the numerous deep scratches on his neck. Ward must have been angry for him to start scratching his neck like some wild animal. She knew that you didn´t to scratch a person to make a person unconscious.

 

She noticed some speckles of blood and some of the scratches drew blood. Not a lot. She still bandaged his neck up. She only used a few inches of her bandage wrap.

 

She came out of the Cage where Coulson was waiting and she said ¨You can interrogate him when he wakes up.¨

Coulson nodded.

They were now waiting for Fitz to wake up.

 

Coulson gave her Fitz´s personnel file, telling her ¨I need ammunition to get under his skin. Maybe agitate him enough he makes careless mistakes and reveal stuff he ain´t supposed to. 

 

She opened it up and started reading.

Family History

Born in 1987 to Elizabeth Fitz, a school teacher, and Alistair Fitz, a factory worker.

In 1997, the parents divorced. Alistair abandoned the family.

 

Throughout the early life of Fitz, he had many injuries. These injuries stopped after the divorce. 

The injuries were likely inflicted by his father. Fitz has since not attempted to talk about said abuse.

Becoming very defensive when the topic appears.

Jemma underlined the parts Coulson could use against Fitz. She wasn´t even sure now if anything in the file was true.

 

 

She underlined the parts about his father. She had some sympathy for him if the parts about his father were true.

 

Then Ward came in the room and said ¨Coulson wants you to scour Fitz´s room for any more stuff he could´ve used against us.¨

 

She said ¨OK.¨ There was nothing more to say.

 

 

 

Notes:

My thinking for all the degrees is that Fitz got some of them before SHIELD/HYDRA like in cannon and some more after joining

Chapter 7: Interrogation

Chapter Text

Fitz woke up and he felt alot of pain coming from his neck. Ward probably took his anger out on him when he went unconscious.

 

But now he finally started to look around.

 

He was in the Cage. Why was he here??

Didn't he expose HYDRA?

After a minute, Coulson walked in.

 

He'd never seen his boss like this. Not even when they got shot at.

 

He was shooting glares at him.

 

If looks could kill, he would've died the femtosecond he came in the room.

 

His boss sat down.

 

Fitz was now very scared and nervous. He was fidgeting with his hands now.

Doing anything to not look Coulson in the eyes. 

 

Coulson finally spoke "How could you?"

 

He was now confused. Did he upload the file in time or had Ward choked him before he could?

 

Fitz just replied "I can explain. I'm very sorry but if--"

 

Coulson interrupted him "Save it Fitz. Is that even your name! Is anything in your file true!"

 

Fitz hadn't expected that. Coulson's normally calm understanding behavior was gone. Replaced with pure fury.

 

Fitz didn't want to speak now. Too scared that anything he said would provoke him.

May then came in and told Coulson "Calm down, let him talk. This is an interrogation"

 

That seemed to do the trick. Coulson was clearly still simmering but some what calmed down.

Coulson asked "Who do you work for?"

 

Fitz replied "HYDRA"

Coulson looked like he was in disbelief.

Maybe at the fact that HYDRA still existed, maybe that he was a member, maybe because he gave that information so willingly.

 

Coulson then asked hesitantly "HYDRA?"

I was a bit nervous to respond but I needed his help. Ward wouldn't be merciful next time.

 

He wasn't sure why he let him live. Maybe because it's quite hard to hide your crewmember on a crew of 6. Maybe he got interrupted. Fitz honestly had no idea.

 

I still responded "After the war, HYDRA infiltrated SHIELD."

Coulson looked horrified.

Suddenly May burst in the room.

Yelling "Coulson,we have a situation!"

 

Coulson and May left.

Leaving him alone.

Chapter 8: Discovery

To explain Simmon's helplessness

I forgot how this episode's interactions went so I made stuff up and this is still true to cannon just my take/my recollection and my attempt to write it out.

Changed some cannon stuff just to keep it Jemma and Fitz's POVs.

Chapter Text

Simmons was very concerned to say the least.

 

Her best friend was a traitor. In the few months she knew him, he risked his life for her multiple times. He was the only person on the crew that could speak the same language as her.

 

Be it English, Science or even British.

The others made so many jokes aimed against them. She never took them seriously. It was all in good fun. But she still trusted Fitz.

She never could've expected this from the person who helped her develope an anti-virus and almost jumped out of a plane for her.

Simmons turned to see Fitz scared for his life.

Fear just palpable in his eyes.

 

He wasn't looking at her. He was looking behind her.

 

When she turned around. She saw one of the screwdrivers Fitz left around floating 2 feet in the air.

 

At that moment, Fitz yelled for Coulson to come.

She pushed Fitz out of the lab. She couldn't stomach the thought of Fitz dying with her.

Coulson came down and Fitz started explaining "The screwdriver just started floating. Just like what happened to everyone else. She pushed me out"

 

At that moment she was panicking. She was sitting next to the door. She had no idea how cure an alien virus. She didn't even know if Chitauri viruses worked like earth viruses.

 

Coulson then asked "Agent Simmons, any thoughts on what to do?"

 

She genuinely had no idea.

 

She shook her head.

 

Coulson then spoke into his radio, saying "Agent May, redirect from Fridge to Sandbox. We desperately need assistance. Simmons is infected."

A few hours later

 

Fitz built a portal so they could pass stuff between them. She still had no hope of surviving.

Later

Fitz got tired of being useless and broke the quarantine she set up.

 

She was thankful that he wanted to help but scared if would get him killed.

 

Fitz said "So what do you need for this vaccine?"

She corrected him "Anti-virus but truthfully I have no idea."

 

Then it clicked.

"The Chitauri lived with this! They must have had some sort of defence against it!"

 

She told Fitz "Get the box."

 

Fitz ran.

 

He came back and openned it. She grabbed a cotton swab and grabbed a piece of the mucus from the helmet.

 

She started analyzing it, eventually making a serum.

 

She injected it in a rat.

A few minutes later

The rat died.

 

She had no hope now.

 

Fitz just said "We can try again."

 

She knew there was no hope and left without saying a word. Fitz was busy trying to figure out what went wrong.

 

He didn't notice her leave until she opened the cargo bay door. 

 

She then jumped.

 

A minute later

Ward had caught up to her.

 

He pulled his parachute and injected her with a syrum.

They later told her that Fitz wanted to jump before Ward stepped in.

 

How Fitz could be HYDRA if he wanted to risk his own life for her. She would never understand.

He was still locked in the Cage, getting interrogated.

Over the radio in the Conference Room, they heard a distress signal. She recognized the voice as Garretts.

 

Garrett was yelling into the radio "Coulson I need your help dealing with these damn drones!"

 

May then came out of no where towards the Cage to get Coulson.

 

Coulson came with May.

 

Coulson said into the radio "Garett what's going on."

Garett telled into the radio "Hand sent drones after me!"

 

Everyone was stunned. Was Hand HYDRA too?

She was too busy thinking to hear what Coulson said.

 

But after a few minutes, Garett turned into the Bus' cannons before turning to the left. Allowing Coulson to shoot the drones.

 

Garett then boarded the Bus.

Chapter 9: Unheard Warnings

Chapter Text

Fitz was getting more and more worried.

 

He heard what sounded like cannons. A jet docking with the Bus.

 

Was he being taken to the Triskellion, bloody siberia? He had no idea. 

 

Coulson walked back into the Cage.

 

It looked like he calmed down but he still looked like a damn bull.

 

"So Fitz how high does HYDRA go?"

 

Coulson practically yelled it with how much anger was in his voice.

 

Fitz desperately had to warn them about Ward but he had to regain his trust first for them to actually believe him.

 

Fitz replied "The bloody Secretary."

 

Coulson's eyes went into shock. If he was in the same place, he would do the same thing.

 

SHIELD's number two being HYDRA would be as surprising as finding out that the Norse Gods were real.(which was definitely news to him)

 

Coulson then spat out the words "Is Victoria Hand HYDRA?" As if she had done something just now that would make him even more venomous towards her. Which is hard to do. Sending him and Ward to South Ossetia without an extraction team definitely burned a bridge or two between them from what he saw.
 

The Scot just said "No, why would you think that? She's as SHIELD as can be. A bit ruthless but SHIELD."

 

As soon as he said that Coulson left the Cage. 

 

He should've yelled that Ward was HYDRA. 

After a while Fitz got tired of waiting for Coulson to come back to the Cage so he just started yelling at the camara hoping that they were listening or at least watching him.

He was yelling "Ward's bloody HYDRA too! Don't trust him!" 

 

But he doubted they were listening anymore.
