You hadn't thought about Joko in years, let alone spoken to him.
To you, he was just someone who your friends knew in high school. You had probably spoken to him a handful of times, but never meaningfully. Maybe something like a weird joke in P.E or a pencil lent in class that was never returned.
That was until one day you reconnected with an old friend. While going through some high school stuff, you found a printed photo from graduation and a list of phone numbers on the back. On a whim, you decided to call one. It was Cooper’s. He answered with a “Hello?” and after a few catch-up chats, he invited you to a Discord game night with a group of mostly unfamiliar people. Until you heard his voice. It was unmistakably Joko’s, just deeper and more confident than you remembered from your old conversations.
“Hey man, it's nice to meet you!” He began to speak before he paused, looking into his camera as if to make eye contact with you. “Wait, have I seen you before?” he questioned.
You paused because, yes, obviously we had seen each other before, we graduated together, but did I want to tell him the truth? I mean, this was the guy who was around you at your worst… well, that could be said about Cooper as well… “We went to high school together.” You tucked a strand of hair behind your ear as you spoke bluntly, you could practically see the gears in his brain turning as he processed the information.
“Holy shit? Y/N?” He furrowed his brows as he processed this newfound information. “Dude, I haven't seen you in years, how have you been?” He let out a soft chuckle as he asked.
“I’ve been okay.” You messed with your hair as you spoke, and your conversation with him continued just the same as your past ones, with nothing meaningful about it, but somehow it felt different, like there was more there than what you could see, or maybe that was just you.
The night went on with nothing eventful happening, just games with you and your new and old friends. Over the night, people left, one or two at a time, until it was just Cooper, you and Joko.
“Well, I’m gonna head out, goodnight guys,” Cooper spoke with a yawn before leaving the call quickly after before we had the chance to say goodnight back.
After a moment of silence, Joko spoke up. He cleared his throat softly. “Y/N-” he started, pausing before he continued as if he was thinking of the words to say next, “You're so cool now, did you know that?” He smiled into his camera, smiling at you.
You couldn't help but blush a bit, playing with your hair once again. “Thank you, Joko, I really appreciate that, you're cool too, but you always have been.” That may not have been the complete truth; he wasn't exactly cool back when I first met him, but I thought he was an interesting guy, to say the least.
The two of you talked for a long time in that call, sharing memories, life updates, and he would even throw you the occasional flirty compliment that made you blush. It was a few hours before Joko yawned and smiled softly into his camera. “It's pretty late, I should probably head to bed,” he stretched
“Aw man, I was having a good time talking to you!” you jokingly complained before smiling into your camera, smiling at him, “goodnight Joko, I hope you sleep well.”
“Don't worry! We can talk again soon, I promise,” he said with an honest smile before leaving the call, leaving you alone.
That promise was never fulfilled though, you didnt end up talking again after that night, sometimes thats just how it happens unfortunately.
