Chapter 1: The Reveal
Chapter Text
The sun was setting over Piltover as people made their way back home but one light remained.
In a lab, two scientists were still refining the details of their invention.
“…the crystals have proven stable under this amount of energy output, although for long periods of time it may spike and oscilate, to keep the ships safe we must provide a rest time between sendoffs…” a young scientist, Viktor, babbled away as more calculations filled the board.
His lab partner, Jayce, just watched in attention, and a little bit of fondness in his amber eyes.
Viktor was beyond what Jayce could’ve expected, he was incredibly smart but he matched Jayce in so much more that it wasn’t very hard for Jayce to develop feelings for the smaller man, however he had yet to decide what to do with such feelings. He didn’t want their relationship to change or to become awkward and he didn’t want to jeopardize their current relationship.
That didn’t mean he did nothing, he toyed on his touches and reveled when Viktor accepted them without complaint and he did everything he could to learn what he liked and disliked.
He found he liked sweet milk, that he often ran cold and used leg warmers and of course the twitches and ways his leg bothered him from time to time.
He’d been elated when Viktor happily received the new cane he’d made for him after his previous one was broken the night their Hextech dream became true.
Jayce just wanted to know everything about Viktor, but some things, he kept it to himself.
“I knew my mother very little.”
“I don’t have any siblings.”
“I don’t have a last name, no one in Zaun does.”
Viktor had said about his past or personal life, it was very little but Jayce took it and kept the knowledge in his heart like a treasure.
-
“Viktor! I got your drink.” Jayce excitedly came to the lab with a cup of sweet milk, exactly how Viktor liked it. Viktor took it gratefully and sighed in content when he took a sip.
Jayce was about to go to his place when something caught his attention, it was addressed to Viktor but it had a last name.
Jayce immediately picked it up and saw the name on the letter.
Viktor Arvence.
The name…, sounded oddly familiar but Jayce didn’t care.
“I finally know your name.” He huffed.
“What do you mean?” Viktor looked back at him, “You already know my name.”
“Well I didn’t know your last name.” Jayce cheerfully said and waved the invite.
“Oh, that,” Viktor said with disinterest before going back to his work, “That’s my married name.”
The words stunned Jayce and he dropped the letter.
Married?!
Viktor was married?!
Someone had captured Viktor’s heart, had held his hands and vowed before the Gods to love him and Viktor had vowed it back.
Someone knew Viktor more intimately than him, probably saw him everyday, his hair in disarray and sleepy, sharing breakfast together, sharing a life.
But something didn’t seem right, Viktor had never mentioned a spouse and he never wore a wedding bracelet, unless Jayce hadn’t noticed. No, he did, he’d immediately looked for one when he realized he’d caught feelings for Viktor.
“Y-you never told me you were married.” Jayce tried to sound as casual as possible despite the storm going on inside his head.
“It wasn’t important for our research.” Viktor said without sparing a glance.
“B-but, we are partners. We share…, stuff about each other.”
“Well I didn’t feel that was important to share.” Viktor said, “And since you have the letter already, what does he want?” Viktor nonchalantly said from his spot without turning to look at him.
He.
A male.
A husband.
Viktor had a husband.
Jayce was still speechless at how uninterested Viktor was, to his husband.
His curiousity was also peaked and with Viktor’s permission, he opened the letter.
“It’s an invitation to the Spring Ball.” Jayce said.
Viktor groaned and dropped his head on his hands. Jayce was only slightly surprised, he knew Viktor disliked balls but this was an invite from his husband, and who was this husband anyway that didn’t even know that?
“I thought you didn’t like balls?” Jayce said.
“I don’t, but I have to go.” Viktor said that and nothing else.
The name rang in Jayce’s mind but he couldn’t remember. He decided to ask his mother that night since she was more familiar with the people of Piltover, at least more than him.
“Arvence?” His mother looked surprised.
“Yeah, I don’t recall who they are.” Jayce said as casually as possible.
“Well they certainly aren’t just anyone, they are the finest jewelers in Piltover.” Ximena Talis said and suddenly a fork dropped, she turned to look at her son who looked positively stunned.
“My dear? Are you alright?” She cautiously reached her hand to him.
Jayce shook his head, “Yes, yes, I’m fine. I-I was just surprised I managed to forget them, like you said, they aren’t just anyone.” Jayce brushed it off but his mind couldn’t.
House Arvence was an incredibly influential and wealthy family, much bigger than House Talis since they created the most exquisite and expensive of jewelry for the Piltover elite.
Jayce was beyond surprised that Viktor was part of that house since nothing in his appearance showed otherwise.
“A-and, how many sons they have?” Jayce tried to sound as nonchalant as possible, his mother saw right through him but chose not to disturb her son and just try and help him as much as she could.
“Their eldest is a woman and two more sons but that’s all I know, my dear.” She said apologetic for not being able to help her son more.
“Oh,” Jayce simply said.
-
Jayce needed to know more about this family but he didn’t have anyone that knew enough gossip to really know who this family was and who was this mysterious spouse.
He thought of Mel but her all too knowing smirk came to mind and he knew she would unravel all his secrets with just a glance.
His mother wasn’t an option, even if she would have all the heart to help him but his House was small and his mother wasn’t too in touch with those kind of nobles.
No, he had to look for an in between that would provide some information. He groaned when he figured the answer.
-
A shot rang out as a precise bullet went through the target.
“It’s a rare occasion you invite me to shoot,” Caitlyn Kiramman said as she made another flawless shot. Beside her Jayce made his shot and missed quite impressively “Specially knowing I’ll just beat you.”
“Hey, you’re supposed to teach me. I’m getting better.” Jayce said offended.
“I could but it’s not like you to be away from your lab, and if it’s not your lab it’s your family forge.” She said as she made another flawless shot.
“Can’t I just miss you a little, sprout?” Jayce said earnestly but Caitlyn just gave him a questioning stare.
“Just tell me what you want.” She said and took her stance. Jayce hesitated before trying his shot, failing again.
“You aren’t focused.” She lowered her gun and leaned against the fencepost just behind them. “Spill it.”
“Um,” Jayce hesitanted, “Mel told me I should assist the Spring Ball to make some connections but I don’t know enough about those people, and I don’t know who to ask.” He said sheepish.
“Ha, you asked the wrong person,” She laughed, “Mel would serve you better for that than me.”
She looked at Jayce’s still shy looks and understood, he was too afraid of her all too knowing stare and anyone could read Jayce like a book, she decided to take pity on him.
“Fine, tell me what you need but I can’t say I will know.” She turned around and made another shot.
“Thanks sprout!” Jayce’s cheer returned, “So, what do you know about the Arvence family?”
“Arvence?” Caitlyn thought it over, “They are jewelers, very top notch, they seem more into luxury than tech.”
“Um, I meant them. What do you know about them?”
“Them? As in the family?” She thought it over, “I know the head of the family is an old man but he’s too old, the House is being run by the heiress and a younger brother, they have a third sibling who is an absolute buffoon, a playboy who just wastes their money. Can you believe he tried to flirt with me? What an ass.”
Jayce thought it over, Viktor was likely married to the middle brother, if the younger one was a playboy, it was unlikely he was married.
“That’s all I know although to be honest, if you want real gossip just look for Mrs. Tavelle, she does love gossip.”
Jayce nodded, he would have to get his formal wear ready for the ball to come and ready his heart for what he would discover

Chapter Text
Jayce got ready for the Spring Ball with his finest clothes with the Talis emblem proudly in display. He was nervous for what he could find but he settled his nerves and went to the ballroom.
The place was spacious and luxurious with all the wealthiest and most influential families gathering in their finest. He saw Mel in a corner charming people into her side.
Jayce began looking for Viktor when he finally saw him. He had to do a double take because he hadn’t recognized Viktor at first but once he did, his heart raced and his cheeks warmed, amongst other embarrassing places.
Viktor looked almost unrecognizable. His hair was stylishly slicked back and his robes accentuated his thin frame in luxurious deep blue and gold accents. A delicate golden chain adorned the bridge of his nose, strung with beautiful little pearls.
He’d been lightly made up to cover his dark circles under his eyes and his skin glowed under the light. On his wrist, his wedding band was on display, a gaudy bracelet with gems covering it’s entirety with some zaphires and pearls interwoven.
Jayce doubted there was anything as luxurious as that bracelet anywhere in his house. Viktor looked every bit a poised noble and suddenly Jayce felt much smaller compared to him.
The only thing that gave Viktor away as someone who wasn’t born in Piltover was his gait since he still needed his cane to walk.
Jayce frowned when he saw even his cane was another one, not the red and gold one he’d made after Viktor’s own was broken that night they created magic. No, now it was another gaudy thing with gold and blue.
Jayce could see Viktor looked beautiful but he couldn’t help but think blue didn’t suit him best, red and gold would look much better.
Talis House colors would suit Viktor much better.
Like a moth to a flame, Jayce walked towards him until at last, Viktor’s eyes caught Jayce’s and he looked surprised.
“Jayce.” He said with that sweet enchanting accent of his.
“Viktor.” Jayce said reverently until something moved behind Viktor and that’s when Jayce saw Viktor had his arm hooked around a man with a tall yet slender build, with long platinum hair. His robes were extravagant with gems and pearls woven into the fabric with gilded loom. His eyes caught Jayce’s and he looked surprised.
“Viktor dear,” Viktor’s husband said as he stood before them, “who would this be?”
“I’m Viktor’s partner.” Jayce said without hesitation.
“Partner?” He lifted his eyebrow and eyed Viktor curiously.
“Lab partner.” Viktor quickly amended.
“Lab partner?” The man’s brow furrowed for just a moment. His eyes went then to the shoulder pads on Jayce’s attire and his face lit up.
“Oh, you must be Jayce Talis. Emer Arvence — it’s a pleasure to meet you,” he said with a smile and extended his hand for a shake, “You are the man behind the Hexgates.”
“One of the men,” Jayce said firmly as he took his and shook it strongly, “Viktor is the reason they even exist.”
“I’m aware,” He said still perfectly poised despite Jayce’s near glare, “As an investor of the Hexgates, I believe I’ve been rude in not meeting you sooner.” He casually said and Jayce gasped, Viktor’s husband was one of their investors?
“How about you come to the race we have organized for tomorrow? A lot of us are going to stretch the legs and do some fun horseracing.” Viktor’s husband, Emer Arvence said.
“Thank you for the invitation, but Viktor and I are very busy with the Hexgates.” Jayce said.
“Oh, well, Viktor will be there,” Emer Arvence said, and Viktor immediately whipped his head towards him, brows lifted in an urgent, questioning manner.
Jayce watched between the two before deciding to intervene. “Viktor didn’t tell me of any plans and we are busy in the lab, I’m sure we can catch up at a later time.” Jayce said but Emer arched a perfectly poised eyebrow towards Viktor and Viktor just sighed in defeat.
“No, Jayce. I won’t go to the lab tomorrow, I have to be there for this race.” He said not looking at Jayce in the eyes and Jayce already disliked this man, who comanded Viktor with just a glance, even more.
“See? Might as well come along too.” Viktor’s husband gave him a smile while Jayce’s face hardened and his fist clenched.
“Oh, there’s councilor Salo, come now Viktor, we still have a few people to greet.” Emer Arvence said and moved, making Viktor do his best to match his pace. Jayce helplessly watched them leave.
He needed more information, so he looked for his target and found her. She was a cheerful widow whose children were already grown and she just enjoyed life in parties such as this one, happily chatting away. The people with her were clearly looking for an escape, Jayce would be glad enough to give them an exit.
“Mrs. Tavelle,” Jayce called and the old woman quickly turned to him, “How lovely to see you.” Jayce took her hand and kissed it.
“Oh, you must be from the House Talis, Jayce Talis.” She said eyeing him up and down with glee.
“It was marvelous to catch up with you, Mrs. Tavelle.” The other people saw an opening and took it and Jayce was glad, he needed her all to himself.
“Oh sure, my dears! Come visit me when you can!” she said as she saw them go before turning to Jayce. “My, my, look at you! Your mother definitely feeds you right!”
“Thank you Mrs. Tavelle, you look lovely tonight.”
“Oh, flatter!” She giggled, “What brings you here my lovely boy, are you looking for a potential match?” she said and her eyes sparkled.
“Oh, no,” Jayce was quick to say, as a professional, she was already directly digging information, “I’m afraid it’s much boring, looking for potential investors, I’m afraid.”
“Oh, business is so boring my darling boy,” she threw her hand, “Let me find you a match!”
She eagerly hooked her arm around his and began dragging Jayce along with an impressive force.
“So tell me darling, man or woman?” She cheerfully said already scanning the room.
“Oh, uh, both.” Jayce said now sweating, thinking how to bring this back to track.
“Perfect dear, I’m sure I’ll find you a match in no time!” She looked around the ball.
“I appreciate the effort but there’s no need.” Jayce tried.
“Oh! Does this mean you already have your eye on someone?” Her eyes sparkled again.
Yes!
“No, no! I-I’ve been too busy in my research and like I said. I’m looking for potential investors.
“Oh, deary, there’s a world out there outside work and inventions.” She put her hand on her hip.
“I know and I’ll let you find me a match,” Jayce said and she looked excited, “but first, madam, I heard the House of Arvence could be potentially interested but I know nothing of that family.”
Like a shark smelling blood, she immediately pounced at the opening.
“Oh, I may know a thing or two but well, nothing related to business.” She said. Jayce was about to prompt her when she suddenly perked up.
“But, if you need to know!” she then scooted closer to Jayce, “The heiress is called Saphira, she’s all business if that’s what you need, she leads the House with a tight grip but you can’t deny the results, my necklace is one of her House, amazing work! Then you have the next brother, Rouven, he’s not the head but he’s a dutiful second but does he need to loosen up a little! Always with that frown!” her eyes suddenly turn mischievous, “and last but definitely not least is the yougest! Emer! A surprise babe, the mother was already of age and no one imagined she could have another when suddenly it happened! He’s so different from his dutiful siblings but as a third child with the family business secured, I too would just enjoy the finest Piltover has to offer.” She giggled.
Emer? Viktor was married to the third child of the Arvence family? The playboy? His answer came quickly enough since indeed Mrs. Tavelle was not done yet.
“Well, he’s definitely the most interesting of the three! His marriage was nothing but a scandal!” She leaned closer to his ear and Jayce also leaned down to her height before she whispered, loudly, “His spouse is a Zaunite, imagine that!” She excitedly said, loving the story. “Everyone was rightfully scandalized! Rumor says the family only accepted after the Zaunite groom signed a document forfeiting any claim to the family fortune during or after the marriage! This to prove his true love!”
Jayce felt a burning pit of jealousy open deep in his stomach.
“Oh but it’s hard to believe, that boy hasn’t stopped being a playboy in all of his marriage!” She said disapprovingly and Jayce was stunned. How could he be married to Viktor, and still play around? Did he not realice how lucky he was? His hand tightened into a fist.
“Look at that, he’s already charming another young missus.” She clicked her tongue disapprovingly.
Jayce immediately turned and saw that indeed the young master was in deep conversation with a young woman who was blushing at his advances. Jayce searched for Viktor and saw him sitting with a glass in hand.
“You’ve been very helpful Mrs. Tavelle, now if you’ll allow me, I’ll go meet this husband of Emer Arvence, I’m quite familiar with him.” Jayce slipped his arm free as much as he could.
“Oh! Really?” She said with a sharp eye and let him go. Jayce nearly sprinted to Viktor’s side.
“Viktor!” Jayce called and Viktor turned to look at him.
“Jayce,” Viktor said, “You’re still here. I thought you didn’t like these galas.”
“I don’t but Mel said it would be a good idea, besides I couldn’t leave my partner alone in this.” He sat in the chair beside Viktor and all too naturally threw an arm around Viktor’s shoulders. “Also it’s not everyday I see you like this.” He whispered to his ear.
Viktor groaned and shoved him with his bony elbow. “I look like a buffoon.”
“I think you look amazing.” Jayce said with a smile.
“I understand this is what many people would kill to look like, but it’s not me.” Viktor said and Jayce was overjoyed, if Viktor didn’t like this lifestyle, perhaps a change would be welcomed. Perhaps to a smaller House that had much less wealth and need of such needless parading.
“Look at this,” Viktor lifted his hand and Jayce saw his wedding bracelet and felt deep resenment towards that simple thing. “This thing alone could feed several families in Zaun for years.”
“If this isn’t who you are, then maybe a change is needed, don’t you think?” Jayce said hopeful.
“Perhaps,” Viktor moved his elegant hand eyeing the bracelet, “But I made a promise, so I must bear this.”
Jayce’s shoulders dropped, he knew Viktor was loyal, but would he really bear all this for that man?
Did Viktor love him so much to stay by his side, even if his husband treated him in such way?
A plan formed in Jayce’s mind, he had to prove Viktor something better, much better was within his reach, he just had to take it.
Sure he didn’t have the wealth the Arvence family had but Viktor would still not need for anything and he would have all of Jayce’s love and devotion.
“Do you want something else to drink?” Jayce suddenly stood, “Have you eaten yet?”
Viktor eyed him curiously “I grabbed a few appetizers.”
“Oh, that won’t do, let me see if I can get you something more substantial, stay here, I’ll be back in a moment!” Jayce cheerfully left, leaving Viktor slightly confused but otherwise still in his place.
Jayce didn’t take long to return and he made sure Viktor was comfortable, they continued to talk animatedly about their project just as if they were in the lab and Jayce was positive he would make Viktor see he had much better options.
Music began to play and Jayce saw Viktor sigh, he knew what was coming. Jayce saw his opportunity as the husband was not around and he hopefully extended his hand to Viktor. Viktor only looked at him with confusion but said nothing else and took Jayce’s hand.
Jayce was beyond happy as he led Viktor to the dancefloor, he made sure to bring Viktor close so he could support his weight and made his movements slow so Viktor could sway comfortably along with him.
Jayce could only see with awe at Viktor’s face up close, his beautiful garments and the tantalizing heat of his body as they pressed up together. Jayce knew this is how it was meant to be, just him and Viktor, like a married couple, a true marriage.
He pictured it in his mind, Viktor would smile at him more with eyes full of love and his clothes would have rich red and gold colors, Talis House colors with the insignia proudly in display, his wedding band would be something more discreet and delicate, forged by Jayce himself, something Viktor could wear everyday and proudly show it.
Jayce looked up and saw Viktor’s husband watch them from afar with a frown. Jayce just smiled and ignored him, focusing instead on Viktor.
“How’s your leg?” Jayce asked, completely ignoring Viktor’s husband’s stare.
“I will survive to the end of this piece.” Viktor said and Jayce huffed.
The music ended much too quickly and the couples clapped, the orchestra began to play another song and other couples made their way to the dancefloor as others made their way out like them, they however were interrupted by one clear firm voice.
“Viktor.”
Both men whipped their heads and found Viktor’s husband, he simply turned around and left without looking back at Viktor and Viktor began to follow him obediently. Jayce could feel his rage growing.
“Viktor!” He reached out to him.
“What?” Viktor looked back but Jayce had no idea what to say.
Don’t follow him.
Leave him.
Stay with me.
Viktor only watched him with open confusion before looking back to where his husband had gone.
“I’ll catch up with you later, Jayce.” Viktor quickly said and left to follow his husband. Leaving Jayce behind.

“What do you want?” Viktor said once he caught up with his husband.
“I believe the agreement stated all dalliances should be kept in complete secrecy.” He said tersely.
“Really?” Viktor snarked.
“Oh, don’t look at me that way,” he said, “You know what I mean. It’s humiliating to my reputation if you are the one running along people.”
“Me?” Viktor said with shock, “What makes you say that? I haven’t got any dalliances.”
“Don’t try to deny it!” He shortened the distance with just two steps and was in front of Viktor. “That Talis has been all over you tonight!”
“Jayce?!” Viktor’s eyes widened, “He’s not my lover.”
“He took the first dance! Do you have any idea how that looks?” He said exasperated.
“I…, don’t?”
“What do you mean you don’t? We always do the first dance!” Emer gesticulated sharply as he spoke, clearly frustrated but careful to keep his tone steady while they were in polite company.
“Is it not to just get it over with?” Viktor plainly asked.
Emer shook his head, pinching his nose between two fingers. “You know, for a supposed genius, you aren’t perceptive enough.”
“I never cared to know more than I should for these balls.” Viktor said and looked away.
“The dancefloor must be opened only by married couples, afterwards others can join or they can switch partners.” Emer explained curtly.
Viktor’s eyes widened. “Oh.”
“Now you understand how badly it looked that your lab partner was the one opening the dance with you?” Emer huffed. “My mistresses have begged me to open the dance with them and I’ve always refused and yet here you are dancing with your lab partner.” He sneered the last part.
“I didn’t know about that.” Viktor bit back.
“But he clearly did! Oh this is a disaster, now my mistresses will be nagging me even more about opening dances with them.” He shook his head, gaze cast to the ceiling in disbelief.
“Oh how hard life is treating you.” Viktor snapped.
Emer narrowed his eyes. “Your job is to make my life easier, not harder.”
“Ugh,” Viktor rolled his eyes. “Jayce isn’t my lover and we aren’t having any dalliances.”
“Then why does he look at me like he wants to punch me?”
“You do have a very punchable face.” Viktor mumbled. Emer watched him, eyes firm, and it took a mere few seconds for Viktor to relent. “Fine! Fine, I’ll talk to him to tone it down.”
“Good, this shouldn’t be happening at all, I don’t want to be humiliated like this again.” Emer firmly said when a new voice cut in.
“Excuse me,” Jayce politely got closer, “Sorry for interrupting, I have a few things to discuss with Viktor, may I steal him away?” Jayce said with as much boyish innocence as he could.
Emer Arvence just arched his eyebrow judgingly at Viktor. Viktor rolled his eyes and gave the slightest of nods.
“Go ahead, I’m done for today.” Emer said as he elegantly walked back into the party.
Jayce watched him go judgingly but then focused back on Viktor and got closer.
“Viktor!”
Viktor sighed, “What do you need Jayce?”
“Nothing.” Jayce lifted his arms defensively, the fight must’ve been quite bad.
“What?” Viktor whipped his head at him.
“You seemed to be arguing. I thought you needed some help getting out.” Jayce shrugged.
“Jayce!” Viktor said exasperatedly, “Please don’t get involved in this.”
“But why? If you need help, you know I’m always here for you!”
“I don’t need help with him, I know how to handle him.”
“Viktor, why can’t you trust me to help you? We’ve been partners for years now!”
“If you want to put it that way, why can’t you trust me when I tell you I can handle him. I’ve known him for longer than you.”
Jayce recoiled after that, it was true. Jayce was just his lab partner, this was Viktor’s husband. But why? Why did Viktor put up with him so much? When it was clear he didn’t care about Viktor?
Viktor sighed tiredly again, “If there’s nothing you need to speak with me about then I’ll go ahead and leave, we can discuss anything you’d like back in the lab.”
“You’re leaving? Let me take you home.” Jayce quickly was by his side again.
“No.” Viktor firmly said and Jayce stood still, stunned. Viktor wasn’t usually so severe with him.
“The Arvence family always takes me back after a ball.” Viktor softened his tone a bit “I’ll see you at the lab tomorrow, Jayce.”
“The lab? I thought you had to go to that race?” Jayce said and Viktor groaned.
“Oh that’s right. I have to go to that stupid race.”
Jayce could only watch confused, why was Viktor still married to this guy if it seemed like everything related to him was a bother to Viktor?
“I’ll see you there tomorrow then.” Viktor said and left. Jayce watched him and followed him from afar, he saw when a servant approached Viktor and guided him to a charriot with the Arvence family crest and left. Jayce felt defeated and left the gala as well, he needed to undust all his riding equipment.

Chapter Text
Jayce’s skin itched as he tugged the collar of his shirt, he hadn’t worn his riding gear in a long long time.
As part of a House, he had to learn horse riding. However, after learning, he’d never rode again, his family wasn’t grand enough to own a stable.
Nevertheless he still remembered the basics and he’d undusted his old riding clothes, he was relieved they still fit.
Jayce moved along the event and peeked at the stands. All the competitors families were on the stands with refreshments and snacks being served to them.
The Arvence family of course was no different with their fine clothing. Viktor was also there, dressed for the part as the husband of the young master, however even Jayce could see how isolated Viktor looked. No one was mingling with him, just two servants stood behind his chair but even they showed a disinterest towards Viktor, he quickly made his way over him.
“Viktor!” Jayce greeted and saw as Viktor perked up upon seeing him but at the same time he took a quick glance towards the servant beside him.
“Jayce.” Viktor greeted him in a calm manner.
“Viktor.” A new voice cut off and Jayce saw as Emer Arvence was now also beside him.
“Emer.” Viktor looked surprised to see him. He looked Viktor up and down with a smile.
“You’re wearing the collar I gave you, good.” Emer Arvence said.
“Not like I have much of a choice.” Viktor grumbled.
“Careful now, dear husband.” Emer said with a bit of a bite to it, “Remember where you are.” He said before finally taking a notice of Jayce.
“Mr. Talis, so glad you made it, come join us before the race starts.” Emer said and carried on his way.
Jayce hesitanted, wanting to stay making Viktor company but even he knew it would be disrespectful considering he’d invited him.
“Don’t make him wait Jayce,” Viktor’s voice broke through his musings as if he knew what he was thinking, “We can catch up back in the lab, once I’m out of this monstrousity.” He said while motioning to his clothes.
Jayce gave one last look at Viktor and then did what he was told and followed the man where the rest of the participants where gathered before they went to their horses.
“Ah, yes indeed,” Jayce heard Emer’s voice and listened in, “After all these years one would think he’d know how to behave but alas, his birth is still something he can’t shake. I'll have to have a tighter grip on his education.”
Jayce’s knuckles went white, he couldn’t believe this guy, talking that way about Viktor, mocking his birth and talking about educating as if Viktor were a pet.
“Ah, as promised, here’s the man of the hour. Jayce Talis.” Emer motioned to him and everyone turned their heads towards him.
“Ah, so it was you.” Jayce heard one of them whisper loudly.
“Talis?” Another mumbled loudly to another.
“A lower blacksmithing House.” The person he’d whispered it to answered back.
“Oh, that explains it.” The first person said and went back to his place.
“Mr. Talis is the mind behind the Hexgates.” Emer Arvence said.
“One, one of the men.” Jayce quickly amended.
“Ah, yes, my dear husband is also part of the minds behind it. So as you can see, they are lab partners, spending most of their time in a lab.” He said with a chuckle.
“But even great minds must take a break once in a while so I invited him to our gathering,” He said to the crowd before turning to address him directly, “I understand your House has no stables so we brought one of our own. She’s a fine runner with a gentle temper.”
Jayce suddenly understood, this guy was covering his reputation after Jayce took the first dance with Viktor by not only blaming it to Viktor’s lower birth, but also his own.
Jayce gritted his teeth but for both Viktor and his sake, he preferred to just offer a weak thank you. It didn’t matter really, not when his true objective was to get Viktor away from him
There was little mingling after that before everyone saddled up and went to the starting point.
The gun sounded and they were off. Jayce tried to remember everything he knew but all these people were much more practiced in this. He looked to his side and indeed, Emer Arvence flew through the race course and the obstacles with practice ease.
The people in the stands were all cheering at their loved ones, Jayce wondered if Viktor would cheer for his husband, or maybe for him.
It was the last trek and Jayce could see the stands more clearly now, he took a peek at where Viktor was, curious on who Viktor was watching. His eyes grew wide when he met amber eyes.
Viktor was looking at him!
His distraction cost him dearly as his horse nearly missed an obstacle and jumped as best she could. Jayce grip on the reigns and his balance was off and suddenly the world turned as he was thrown off the horse, landing harshly on the ground.

Viktor was always bored during these events, fortunately that guy very rarely took him to any, it was mostly galas where he just had to show up with his husband. This time however there was something that kept Viktor’s interest.
He had to contain a laugh when he saw Jayce dressed up in riding gear and clearly uncomfortable but he couldn’t deny the man looked handsome, as usual. Ever the considerate man, he’d come to Viktor to greet him but of course Emer just had to poke his nose in.
Viktor had watched Jayce go with him and kept his eye on him throughout the race. It was the last trek of the course when suddenly Jayce looked up to him and their eyes met, it lasted shortly when suddenly Jayce was being thrown off his horse.
Viktor gasped and immediately gripped his cane, ready to go to Jayce. He heard the loud clearing of his throat from the servant beside him, of course they knew the situation, they were there to keep Viktor in check.
Viktor just gripped his cane harder, hating he couldn’t go to Jayce to check if he was alright and no one was going over there to help him.
“Send someone.” Viktor told the servant.
“The young master was clear-”
“Your young master personally invited him,” Viktor whipped his head and hissed at the servant, “It would reflect poorly on him if he left his guest laying there on the ground!”
The servant looked over to someone else and motioned with his head, soon at least two young servants dashed towards Jayce and helped him up.
Loud cheering was heard and Viktor turned around and saw as Emer Arvence was being carried, he’d won the race. Viktor just huffed and looked back to where the young servants where escorting Jayce to the nearest tent, Jayce looked up again for a moment and their eyes met again but soon Jayce looked down with a pained expression. He likely sprained something, Viktor thought.
“Your attention should be on your husband.” The servant said.
“Your young master is quite alright and like it or not, he’s still my lab partner. I can show some concern towards him.” Viktor grumbled.
“Not for now, you can’t.” The servant said. “Now come along, the young master is calling you.”
“What?” Viktor was shocked but the servant was already ushering him to get up and go towards where all the nobles where congratulating Emer for the win.
Viktor felt completely out of place around them when Emer saw him and suddenly pulled him to his side by the waist. He wasn’t usually this ‘affectionate’. He felt Emer pinch his side and knew he had to do his part.
“Congratulations, although I was sure you’d win, your skill is quite unmatched.” Viktor said and his husband hummed pleased.
“That’s quite right indeed, nevertheless a win is a win that must be celebrated.” He raised his glass of champagne and everyone else did before drinking.
Usually at this point he would no longer need Viktor and would let go to find his next prey, so it surprised Viktor immensely when he kept his arm around his hip and they moved together to their assigned space.
“What’s with all this circus?” Viktor hissed at Emer once they were out of earshot.
“Thank your lab partner for that.” Emer boredly said.
“You can’t be serious that dance really needed all this?!”
“No, but one of my mistresses wouldn’t stop nagging me about it and I couldn’t shake her off so now you have to endure this as much as I do.”
“You have to be joking.”
“Not at all, in fact if you hadn’t spent all that time staring at your lab partner, you would’ve watched her glaring at you, after all that necklace you’re wearing was commissioned for her but I decided to have you wear it as punishment.”
Viktor looked down at the necklace the servants had given him to wear and tried to turn to find the missy who was supposedly glaring at him.
“Don’t go look for her now.” Emer squeezed Viktor to prevent him from looking around, “Hopefully she understood the message and has left. Her attitude was charming at first but now her tantrums have become unbearable, she needs to remember her place.”
They reached Viktor’s chair and he was finally released.
“I have no more need of you, my servants are scouring the area to make sure she’s gone, then you can leave.” He gave Viktor one last serious look. “Don’t do anything stupid.”
“If this is about Jayce, I already told you there’s nothing between us.”
“I don’t care if there is or isn’t, what matters is what people see.”
Viktor frowned at him but Emer let him go to go back to his celebrations. Nevertheless Viktor still wanted to check on Jayce when the young servants came back.
“How is Jayce?” Viktor asked.
“The medic said it’s just a small sprain.” The young servant said.
“Where is he now?” Viktor started to walk towards the medical tent.
“He already left,” the young servant said, “said he would recover back home.”
“Oh,” Viktor halted, “That would be the best, he needs to rest.”
Viktor wished he could meet up with Jayce but he was not done here, he’d have to wait to check on Jayce.

Viktor was finally in familiar ground, his beloved lab but nevertheless there was one more thing that needed to be done. He heard the creak of the door and saw as Jayce walked in.
“Jayce,” Viktor spinned on his stool, “how are you? I was unable to catch you after your fall.”
“Oh, that,” Jayce sat on his chair and embarrassedly answered, “It was just the fall, I’m fine.”
“I’m glad,” Viktor sighed before steeling himself “Jayce, we need to talk.” Viktor said and Jayce looked up.
“I understand our partnership and I appreciate your care but in front of others, specially those people in the gala, please try not to approach me, or at least too much.”
“What?!” Jayce immediately stood up.
“I understand you’re very caring by nature Jayce, but your attentiveness caused me some trouble.” Viktor said as soothingly as possible, Jayce had a sensible heart after all.
“Caused you trouble?” Jayce’s eyes searched for an answer before they hardened. “Was it him? He told you to stay away from me?” Jayce pressed.
“Well, yes.” Viktor said, not understanding why Jayce was so upset, “I mean I can’t stay away from you, you are my lab partner but you understand, in events like the Spring Ball.”
“Why does he not want me around you?” Jayce demanded.
“People got the wrong idea but I already cleared it out with him.” Viktor said calmly, much too calmly for Jayce’s liking.
“Yes, by blaming it on you being a Zaunite!”
Viktor’s eyes widened, but he quickly schooled his expression into something neutral. “Well, he had to justify it somehow for his friends, I suppose.”
“What?! Why do you justify him?!”
“It’s not like it’s the first time he’s done it, he does love to use that excuse.”
“This makes it worse, you understand that?” Jayce pleaded.
“Jayce,” Viktor said tightly, head shaking just a fraction. “Why are you so worked up about this?”
“Why are you not?!”
“I’m used to this Jayce,” Viktor said much to calmly, “I’ve dealt with this for years now, trust me and forget about it.”
“Viktor,” Jayce pleaded.
“Jayce, please don’t make this difficult for me,” Viktor pleaded in return and Jayce’s shoulders dropped.
“Don’t worry too much about it Jayce,” Viktor said soothingly, “I rarely go to those galas.” He said with a smile.
-
Viktor stared at the letter in front of him like it had personally offended him.
Jayce came over and seeing his partner’s face he peeked over and also glared at the thing. It was another invite to a gala. Jayce quickly read the name to know when to go.
-
Viktor was once again glammed up with the finest of Piltover fashion as he walked with his husband.
“Why so much attention to my person?” He said to his husband who also looked bored, “You can’t tell me it’s about Jayce again.”
“No, that’s been taken care of,” Emer drawled, “my family requested your presence again.”
Viktor scrunched his face, “Why?”
“I don’t know,” Emer said petulant, “they’ve been acting strange these past few days.”
“What did you do to make them angry?” Viktor hissed.
“Nothing!” Emer hissed back and Viktor just lifted his eyebrow, “Nothing I haven’t done before at least”
Viktor stared unimpressed before sighting, “Whatever it was, now I must bear the consequences.”
“Don’t think you’re the only one,” Emer said, “Mr. Barquin’s son came back from abroad and I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to meet him and instead I’m here with you.”
“What does that have to do with me? You’ve never stopped your gallantry even when I’m in the same space.”
“Mr. Barquin’s son is a respectable man and would hate the advances of a married man, I had hoped however he wouldn’t notice until after a night or two.” Emer admitted.
“You utter rake.” Viktor shook his head disapprovingly.
“Ah, there’s your lab partner.” Emer said mockingly while both watched as Jayce arrived.
“I already told you, there’s nothing between us.”
“And I already told you it doesn’t matter what truly is but rather what the eye can see,” Emer began pulling Viktor away to another direction, "And if there's one thing you can trust me with, is that I know a besotted look when I see one"
Viktor only gave him a confused look before the words took in and a light blush bloomed on his cheeks as his husband led him to the dancefloor. This time, they opened the dance together.
-
Jayce could only helplessly watch as Viktor and his husband danced, or did their best since Viktor could only move so much and the husband kept the correct posture, meaning Viktor couldn’t lean on him much and Jayce could tell it was causing Viktor pain.
This time it looked like they were amicable enough, chatting idly as they moved together.
Fortunately it ended quickly and Viktor was led to the nearest chair already being brought closer by that same servant he’d seen before.
Jayce quickly went to his side, he only saw as Emer Arvence said something to Viktor’s ear that made him frown before leaving to mingle in the party.
“Viktor!” Jayce approached.
“Jayce.” Viktor answered, they made small talk until Viktor looked around.
“Jayce, didn’t you come to mingle? See if there’s potential alliances?”
“Yeah maybe but I’d rather be with you, it is pretty boring, isn’t it?” he tried to brush it off as best he could.
“Jayce, I appreciate the effort but please, remember what I told you about.” Viktor said with hushed tones.
“Why do you let him dictate who you talk to?” Jayce frowned and crossed his arms.
“Jayce, please, don’t make this difficult for me.”
“I’m trying to make it better, you really shouldn’t have to be in a situation where you can’t even choose who you talk to.”
“I appreciate your efforts but don’t worry, I’ll be leaving shortly anyway.” Viktor looked at the servant before starting to stand, the servant moved away.
“I’ll take you back.” Jayce stood as well.
“No,” Viktor was quick, much too quick, to say, “I told you, the Arvence family takes me back.”
Jayce frowned, not his husband, just his family and by that he meant those servants that looked down on Viktor.
“I’m leaving too, your place is on my way.” And even if it wasn’t, Jayce would still go.
“Jayce, I already told you, the Arvence family takes me back, now please, we’ve spent enough time together, go back to the party before we are seen.” Viktor said as he moved away from the party.
Jayce pressed, “Is that why it is? Because you can’t be seen with me?”
“Jayce, stop.” Viktor warned as he carried on to leave, but Jayce just followed.
“Is my House so low you can’t even be seen with me?!” Jayce exploded, desperate and imploring. He felt the pain blooming on the back of his head seconds before he could even process what happened.
Jayce touched the back of his head and watched Viktor who looked positively furious.
“Don’t get involved in things you don’t know of.” He fumed and left Jayce there feeling like an idiot.
-
The next day at the lab was tense.
Each was working on their own station without looking at each other, eventually, Jayce moved.
“Viktor,” he gently called but Viktor didn’t respond, “I’m sorry, you’re right. I shouldn’t get involved in something I don’t know about.”
Viktor dropped his shoulders. “I’m sorry too, Jayce.”
“No need! I shouldn’t have said that.”
“I don’t own anything I wear during those parties,” Viktor interrupted and Jayce stalled, “the Arvence family takes me to and from those events because they have all the clothes and jewelry they put on me and they always want to make sure I give it all back,” he huffed, “As if I had any interest in such pointless baubles.”
Jayce couldn’t believe what he was hearing, that family! How could they treat Viktor that way?!
“I hope you understand now, Jayce, why I couldn’t accept your offer.”
“I’m so sorry Vik, I shouldn’t have acted that way. It was uncouth.”
“Yes, it was,” Viktor said seriously but then softened his expression, “but I understand you didn’t know all the facts. Let’s leave it at that and forget about it.”
Jayce understood Viktor meant to close the subject and he let it go, especially since now Viktor was calling him to check some calculations he was working on.

Chapter Text
Things went back to normal in the lab but Jayce couldn’t help but feel disheartened at how Viktor could bare such family and his playboy husband, he really wanted to do something for Viktor but there was little he could do if Viktor was resolute in staying there.
Time passed as usual and Jayce could only sigh at his broken heart, yearning to do more, to help more but with Viktor making it clear he wanted no help, there was little that he could do.
Fortunately Viktor was right, his husband rarely summoned him and they hadn’t heard about him in a while.
Except, soon things began to change.
Jayce could tell something was happening, Viktor was more snappish and angry. Jayce tried his best to figure out what was happening but nothing had changed recently.
He suspected about Emer Arvence being the reason because Viktor had been summoned once and ever since then, Viktor’s mood had turned sour but at this point Jayce was unsure how to react or support Viktor.
He flipped through their correspondence mindlessly until one caught his attention.
“V, we’ve been invited by Heimerdinger to give a speech to the new students at the Academy.”
“Hm,” Viktor just barely hummed in acknowledgement.
Jayce pouted. Viktor had been like this for a while now.
-
“That was a nice speech.” Someone said as Jayce and Viktor mingled with some former classmates that had chosen to stay as professors in the Academy.
“Thanks, too bad I couldn’t bring something from the lab but Heimerdinger says to save it for Progress Day.” Jayce said.
“Indeed if it’s one of the Hextech wonders you’ve made.” One former classmate said.
“And how’s everybody been?” Jayce politely asked them.
“Same old, same old.” One of them shrugged.
“The only one with exciting news is Dmitri.” One perked up, causing Jayce to frown. That guy.
“Yes, he’s about to leave to travel for who knows how long, years he says!” Another chimed in excitedly.
“Indeed, if there’s any pending business you have with him, better wrap it up now.” One of them said.
The only pending business he had with Dmitri was tucked away in one of his old journals from his academy days — a comeback that had been waiting for years for the perfect moment.
‘He wouldn’t know true progress even if it hit him in the face.
Say that next time you see him!’
Jayce resisted to roll his eyes at the mention of him but then he turned to look at Viktor and saw he had a wide-eyed stare at their former classmates and even asked more about Dmitri, Jayce couldn’t figure out why he would care about that guy, he was much more interesting.
-
Jayce was happier now, Viktor seemed to be in a much better mood. He’d done his best to be an attentive partner and he also hoped that was one of the things that had improved Viktor’s mood.
Although he wouldn’t be sure, lately Viktor had been away from the lab for longer periods of time, and while he was used to Viktor disappearing from time to time, he really wished he’d rely on him more, he wanted to show Viktor he really was there for him for whatever he needed. And so he told him just that one day.
“So please, Viktor, if there’s anything, anything I can do to help, let me know, you know I’m here for you.” Jayce said to Viktor with an amicable smile after he saw Viktor was in a bad mood again.
This time however, instead of just brushing him off, he was definitely thinking of something. Jayce just smiled and waited for whatever decision Viktor took.
“Actually,” Viktor began and Jayce perked up, “if you really mean it. There is a favor I must ask you.”
“Of course!” Jayce brightened considerably at being called upon.
“Could you make matching engagement bands?” Viktor asked.
“Sure thing V!” Jayce smiled before his mind suddenly halted at what Viktor just said, “E-engagement bands?”
“Yes, and also wedding bands if it’s not too much trouble,” Viktor said earnestly.
Jayce felt something was off but Viktor was finally opening up to him.
“A-ah, sure! Um,” Jayce fidgeted, “A-re you, ah, sponsoring the bands for a wedding?”
“What? Oh no, it’s for me,” Viktor said and turned to search between his papers.
Meanwhile Jayce was completely still, engagement bands, for Viktor? Wasn’t he…?
“W-weren’t you married already?” Jayce’s head was spinning, what was all of this?!
“Hm? Oh, I got divorced.” Viktor plainly said like it was the weather.
“You got divorced?!” Jayce screeched, causing Viktor’s body to startle from sudden volume.
“Yes, a week ago.” Viktor groused, recovering quickly from the shock of Jayce’s outburst.
“Why do you never tell me these things!?” Jayce pushed, he couldn’t believe it! Could it be? Were his efforts not in vain?
“I’m sorry, I usually don’t think this would be important information to share.”
“I’m your partner, Viktor, I always want to know even the most unimportant things about you,” Jayce said gently at him, except, “Wait, if you are divorced, why do you need engagement bands?”
“Oh, for me and Dmitri.”
The world stopped for Jayce, Viktor kept talking but it was only background noise for Jayce whose mind had come to a complete halt.
Engagement bands.
For Viktor.
AND DIMITRI?!
“… if there’s any pending business you have with him, better wrap it up now.”
He suddenly remembered his former classmates’ words, wait, does that meant?
Did Viktor love Dmitri all these years and couldn’t be with him because of his marriage and now because he was leaving, did Viktor divorce his rich husband?! FOR DMITRI?!
“..yce, Jayce!” Jayce felt a hand shaking him slightly and finally focused on Viktor’s slightly unnerved face, “are you alright?”
NO!
Viktor searched his face for a moment before continuing.
“Like I told you, I already have my measurements and Dmitri’s.”
The guys name just irked Jayce more.
“Why him?!” Jayce pleaded, eyes wild and searching. “That guy, that guy! He wouldn’t know true progress even if it hit him in the face!”
Viktor flinched back, but then he actually chuckled at that, it distracted Jayce for a moment until he remembered what Viktor was asking from him.
“Perhaps,” Viktor said with a slight chuckle, “but he is leaving soon and we need engraved matching bands, both engagement and marriage bands and no blacksmith would take such a rushed job, that’s why, Jayce, I hope I can rely on you.” Viktor said earnestly.

Chapter Text
“Viktor,” Jayce suddenly grabbed both of Viktor’s hands and if he could lie to himself, he’d almost swore Viktor had a slight blush on his cheeks, “you can ask anything you want from me.” He tenderly said and Viktor was watching him with wide eyes.
“But why him?!” Jayce let go suddenly and threw his arms in the air, pulling back to break into a manic pace, “What do you even like about that guy? He is so annoying!”
He heard Viktor do a much charming chuckle and suddenly Jayce stopped, he realized he was bad mouthing Viktor’s fiancé.
Janna, how wrong that sounded.
“I’ll never understand why you dislike him so much,” Viktor said amused and Jayce couldn’t help but think if he wanted the reasons to be listed chronologically or alphabetically, “but yes, he can be a little… too spirited.”
Jayce sighed, that guy always stole his spotlight as the best and he always always was a shadow as the second best, he was even taking Viktor away from him!
“Fortunately he’s going away soon, and for a few years I heard.” Viktor said with a mischievous smile and Jayce could only watch confused.
“Wait, I don’t understand, you want him to leave? After you just… got him?” The words were bitter leaving Jayce’s mouth, but he had to know. Is this what Viktor had been truly yearning for all this time? Dmitri?
“Got him?” Viktor echoed, voice full of quiet amusement.
He was laughing. Jayce was completely and utterly losing his mind, and Viktor was laughing.
Viktor quieted, then, a flash of something in his eyes. The small smile disappeared and his face turned serious.
“Oh,” Viktor looked at Jayce up and down, “Oh, you actually mean it.” Viktor widened his eyes.
“Should I not?” Jayce stood there confused.
“No, I’m not interested in Dmitri. I’m more interested in the fact that he’s leaving Piltover for a few years.” Viktor said and Jayce felt relief pour over him but then he was now more confused than ever.
“Then why…? Why are you marrying Dmitri?” Jayce carefully asked.
“Jayce, do you seriously don’t know?” Viktor searched his face but Jayce was as truthful as always. “Hold on, so you…,” Viktor stared at him, his bemused expression slowly giving way to horror. “You thought, with Emer, that I was married for love?”
Jayce suddenly felt very stupid but he still couldn’t understand “Um, yes?”
“Oh dear Janna!” Viktor looked away, “Jayce! You seriously couldn’t think I was, that I was…! Oh Janna!” Viktor couldn’t even finish the sentence.
“Well I’m sorry but isn’t that what marriage is for?!”
“Jayce, I can’t believe you, why would one of the richest young men of Piltover be married to a Zaunite?!” Viktor demanded.
“I don’t know! There’s no reason so it could only be love!” Jayce argued back.
“What do you mean there’s no reason?” Viktor halted suddenly, fixing the man with a stare. “Jayce, how do you think someone from Zaun would enroll into the Academy?” Viktor asked with some suspicion.
Jayce halted too. “… At the student faculty office?”
“I’m throwing this wrench at you.” Viktor menacingly grabbed the nearby tool.
“Wait, you can’t?” Jayce said with disbelief.
“We can but it’s a long process directly in Zaun and it almost always ends up denied. Even if I managed to enroll, we need a permit to even be in Piltover every time we cross that bridge!” Viktor said with righteous fury, the Zaunite in him showing for just a moment before he seemed to forcibly calm himself, “It’s far easier to enroll if you’re a Piltie.”
Suddenly the sun shone in Jayce’s mind as he processed what Viktor said.
“So you never loved…?” Jayce excitedly asked.
“Dear Janna, no!” Viktor recoiled at just the thought of loving Emer Arvence of all people.
“What did he gain in all of this? I doubt he’s that charitable.”
“Indeed,” Viktor answered, “as you know, he’s… promiscuous. His family pressured him to get married to keep up appearances, and I suppose they pressured him so much he decided to retaliate.”
Suddenly everything made sense to Jayce as his eyes widened, “So he married someone they wouldn’t approve of.” He finished the thought.
“Precisely, his servants found me, a harmless Zaunite, trying to sneak into the Academy with a stolen uniform. They knew that I was exactly what their young master needed. They threatened to expose me if I didn’t take the offer, but… being married to him, having the Arvence last name, it gave me a free pass to the Academy. So I accepted.”
“I can’t believe this,” Jayce collapsed on his chair.
“So you see, we’ve only ever used each other,” Viktor watched as Jayce took all that information in and he also knew he had to add one more thing, “I didn’t know you thought it was a marriage for love, I now understand your actions and so, I apologize for being so rude. I understand now that you felt you had fair reasons to protect me and I appreciate them. So… thank you.”
“No, I’m sorry, like you said, I shouldn’t get involved in things I didn’t know about.” Jayce shook his head, “I’m sorry for causing you trouble.”
“Don’t worry about it Jayce, it’s all in the past.” Viktor said with an amicable smile
“But then, if I may ask, why are you trying to marry Dmitri?”
“My beloved husband,” Viktor said between gritted teeth, frustrated but without bite, “decided to annul the marriage,”
“Annul it? Wasn’t it a divorce?”
“It’s not like we ever consummated it and we could both attest to that.” Viktor shrugged and Jayce couldn’t help but feel heat across his cheeks at the implications.
“Why now?” Jayce asked.
“His family was done with the ruse, he hadn’t changed at all so they decided to just disinherit him.” Viktor said and remembered that peculiar encounter.
-
“ Why did you call for me? What did you do now?” Viktor entered Emer’s study. He seemed to actually being working on something, surprising from someone whose study was just for show, considering he spent most of his time mingling with his conquests.
“I did nothing,” Emer said defensively, finally looking up at Viktor innocently. “It’s all my family’s fault.”
Viktor didn’t believe a word but preferred not to engage more to know why he was called.
“So, what do you want?”
“We are getting divorced.” Emer calmly said as he continued to write his papers.
Viktor’s mind went into a halt, he couldn’t believe what he just heard.
“I never breached the contract!” He exclaimed, unable to control his outburst.
“Oh it wasn’t because of you,” Emer gave a quick side eye, “or your partner’s fault, no matter how much he would’ve liked it to be.”
“Then, why?” Viktor was speechless.
“My family is done with the ruse, they plan to disinherit me,” Emer said and huffed, “As if that could affect me, all I have to do is marry another rich heir and I have found the ideal candidate.”
“Why would you need to remarry?” Viktor asked, “weren’t you one of the first investors of the Hexgates?”
“Oh, I wasn’t, my family was.” Emer said.
“What?!”
“I wasn’t going to invest my money in something I didn’t even understand.” Emer shrugged as if it were the most obvious thing.
“I told you it was going to be revolutionary!”
“And I did once it was built! Not before!” He huffed, “Rouven threw a fit when he heard about it but once it was built and giving us money back, he stopped nagging me.”
“Can’t you ask for those earnings?”
“Rouven says whatever was earned I already spent it.” Emer rolled his eyes.
“So the investments that you made with your money, aren’t those enough?” Viktor tried.
“Ha! Only you would think that’s enough to live properly but it’s nothing, it would barely cover for a suitable house!”
“What about all the things your family put on me? It should be worth something.”
“Why does it feel like you’re against this?” Emer asked confused, “You should be overjoyed.”
“Do you have any idea what position you’re putting me in!” Viktor pressed.
“Oh, come on,” Emer said dismissively. “Between us two, you have it easier.”
“How could I…!” Viktor gripped his cane, wanting so badly to throw it at this rake of a man.
“Of course you do!” Emer snapped, “You have that Talis that would marry you in a heartbeat while I had to study who would be the best option for what I need!”
“What?” Viktor stilled but then his fury came back, “Don’t bring Jayce into this!”
“Why not? It would solve your problem immediately.”
“I told you we are not lovers!” Viktor snapped. “Don’t get him involved in this mess!”
“Listen to me, dear husband,” Emer gritted out. “It’s not every day that I recognize the reputation I’ve made for myself but my last favor to you is tell you this: that man will marry you, and I know for a fact you would let him.”
Viktor looked at him, suddenly doubting himself at getting caught in the feelings he would barely even recognize in himself.
“You have your solution right in front of you, so take it or figure something else out,” Emer closed his book with finality, “My new fiancé should be under my charms soon so your clock is ticking.”

Chapter Text
Viktor frowned once he remembered Emer’s words but he wouldn’t, couldn’t just believe his words.
“But wouldn’t that jeopardize your permit in Piltover?” Jayce’s concerned voice brought Viktor back to the present.
“You’re a quick learner, Jayce,” Viktor nodded, “my marriage to him is the only thing allowing me to stay here. Previously my position as assistant to the dean of the Academy would’ve given me the permit but I already had a contract with Emer and if they revoked my position then I would be without permit so I remained married. However, ever since I started working with you, I have no official position to grant me a permit.”
“What?” Jayce suddenly stood up, “Then how can we get it? Tell me what I need to do and we’ll do it! You’ve been living here most of your life! You should already have a permanent permit!”
“The paperwork takes a long time and I hadn’t done the process because I already was married and it was much faster and it’s so difficult to get a permanent permit.”
“That is bullshit!” Jayce pased, “I’ll talk to Mel! Maybe she can help!”
“Don’t bother, Jayce,” Viktor tried to placate him, “There’s a reason there are so many obstacles. Piltover doesn’t want to grant permanent permits to Zaunites.”
“But you built the Hexgates with me! That has to count for something!”
“How many times have you asked for my name to be added to promotions on the Hexgates?”
Jayce recoiled.
“And that is only the ones you personally saw, otherwise my name is always scratched out.”
Jayce could only feel the injustice of it all and felt helpless upon it.
“Don’t think too much about it,” Viktor said, “I have it all figured out. Emer did give me time to settle my affairs and I did.”
Jayce grimaced when he remembered the ‘fix’ “Why Dmitri? What does he gain from all of this?”
“Nothing.” Viktor said.
“You can’t seriously tell me he is doing this for nothing?”
“He’s annoying, not evil.” Viktor rolled his eyes. “I explained my situation and he is to leave soon for years. A signed paper back in Piltover will not affect him at all.”
Jayce tried to temper his disappointment that Dmitri of all people knew about Viktor’s situation before him.
“Why didn’t you tell me? I could’ve help you too!” A thought suddenly formed in his mind and he excitedly rushed to Viktor and took his hands.
“Marry me!” He said eagerly, eyes already overflowing with emotion.
“What?!” Viktor screeched scandalized but a blush on his cheeks betrayed him.
“If all you need to do is marry, then just marry me!” Jayce repeated, amazed by his own genius.
However, Viktor deflated. “Jayce,” he gently began.
“Viktor, please!” Jayce interrupted, already knowing Viktor would deny him. “I told you, I would do anything for you!”
“That’s precisely why I can’t ask that of you!” Viktor pulled his hands from Jayce’s, moving them to wrap around himself. “Jayce, you have the opportunity to marry with someone you love, not for convenience or for political reasons, and I can’t, I won’t take that away from you.”
“Is that why you didn’t come to me?” Jayce gently asked and Viktor nodded.
“So if I understand correctly, my marriage has to be with someone I love, correct?” Jayce asked with a glint in his eyes while Viktor nodded, “and you need to marry to keep your permit in Piltover, correct?” Viktor looked at him with some confusion but nodded as well.
“Then I guess… two birds with one stone?” Jayce said cheerfully.
Viktor looked at him with confusion until it dawned to him, his eyes going wide
“Jayce,” Viktor reached out for him with his free hand, suddenly needing the skin contact. “I can never repay the kindness and attention that you have towards me, but I can’t make you do this.”
“Viktor.” Jayce gently cupped Viktor’s face and stole a kiss — it was firm, assured, with no room for Viktor to argue.
Viktor went still as he felt Jayce’s warm lips on his, not understanding at all what was happening. Finally Jayce let go but he remained close, pressing their foreheads together.
“I told you, if you want me to marry for love,” Jayce opened his eyes and tenderly looked at Viktor, “then I will.”
Viktor gasped. “Jayce.”
“I’ve been going crazy these past few weeks, I thought I lost you and he wasn’t even treating you right.”
“Oh, Jayce.” Viktor gently caressed his face.
“So please, Viktor. All you have to do is say yes.” Jayce said.
Viktor’s expression firms, expectant and beautifully confident.
“Viktor,” Jayce began, “Will you marry me?”
Viktor’s lips parted slightly in awe.
“Yes.”
