It's 2023. Phoenix Wright has been disbarred, the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic still lingers, and in these troubled times, Maya Fey turns to an old staples of hers: The Steel Samurai fandom. It is a solace to her, to be Princess online. She has even joined a discord server called Steel Samurai Central, which is now a major hub of the Steel Samurai fandom. The fandom gets thrown into a frenzy when a documentary releases called Forged in Steel: A Sal Manella Story. The fandom LOVES it, at large. They ESPECIALLY love the exclusive interview with Sal Manella himself, who laments the unfair treatment he has received since his stint in jail for falsifying evidence, and since his scandal in 2020, and the fandom thinks he deserves better.
Maya does not.
Tired of going against the grain within Steel Samurai Central, she makes her own discord--Steel Samurai Sanctuary, and invites all of the people who have also expressed anti-Manella sentiments so they can talk about other things besides that fucking documentary. One of these people is her friend Sword, that she has been online friends with for several years.
Sword, who is the pseudonym of Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth.

I''ve noticed that the watercolor backgrounds slowly degrade in quality over the course of the seasons. In each one's first appearance, they seem to be perfect, but I have noticed a disconcerting pattern that each time they reappear, there is more and more damage, and more and more shoddy repair jobs that simply do not live up to the original, first appearance.

And the credits don't even tell us who is tasked with painting and/or repairing these things.

Maya took a sharp breath as she looked up from her computer. Who the fuck just comes up and…rings the doorbell??

She stormed over to the front door, ready to rip it open and yell at whoever it was, tell them I'm BUSY, I have an important work call, now go awa-

But when she pulled the door open, all protest died in her throat.

It had been over a year, since she last saw Phoenix Wright.

And he did not look well.

He was gaunt, and skinny, and his body was sort of turned away from her—like he was trying to decide if he was going to flee the scene or not. As if she could see his inner monlogue, she watched as he turned back toward her, tugging on his beanie and his ratty hoodie like he was trying to hide behind them.

“Hey, Maya,” said Phoenix, oh-so-casually, not quite meeting her eyes.

Maya's eyes filled with tears, blurring her vision.

"Nick," she choked out, and she dragged him by the sleeve of his hoodie to give him the biggest hug that she possibly could.

Like I said before, last chapter had some minor character OCs that wouldn't be returning. The people you see in this chapter, though, are the ones we are sticking with, the whole way through. Plus Phoenix! He's here too, and he'll join in on the discord fun soon enough.

Prologue time! Most of these characters, we will not see again. Next chapter, when we enter Maya's server, you will see who the main characters of this fic are. Just so you know, Princess and Sword are the only existing ace attorney characters (so far)--the rest are OCs. But hopefully you will come to love the main cast of OCs as much as I now do.
I have to say. This is probably one of the most self-indulgent things I've ever written, and if you have read my other works, that's saying a lot. This fic is chock full to the brim of things I like, and references that I might be the only one to get, and also some things that I just made up. As this fic goes along, some of the links are real, some of them are fake. If you try to click on them, you might find some fun links! So I encourage you to try.
You might be wondering, what the hell did Sal Manella do in 2020 that got him called out? Well, we will go more in depth on that later, when Maya explains it to Phoenix. But...it's about what it sounds like. I even drew a wretched picture.
I urge you to check out both of the inspired works above. The first one was so fucking funny it inspired me to write a discord fic with my own spin, and the second one is where I got the workskin, which is doing ALL of the aesthetic heavy lifting here. Thank you to both of these works.

I’m usually more…composed, but I must express with heartfelt astonished offense, ‘why the hell would you embed such cruelty put upon a humble, delicious cucumber, you FIEND.’
Otherwise, good chapter, I am still cautious to gauge how I feel about these ocs and how much attention they are getting over that of the established canonical ones. I am looking forward to how this develops with the introduction of Phoenix in Maya’s reality offline, though.
The Stefan Karl bits were quite stellarly received on my part for I am a long time fan and it is appreciated to be reminded of the joy he has left us with.

Omg, I absolutely LOVE discord fics, THIS IS SO FUN!!!! I'm absolutely loving the take on Maya and all her friends, these guys are great. I loved the bit about Miles thinking the German dub is superior because he absolutely grew up smuggling episodes in German wherever he could of any and all of his favorite animes, Steel Samurai especially included. Also yeah fuck Sal Manella LMAO I would be just as pissed as Maya and Co. are about all these sudden change in attitudes about a guy that was proved to be extremely controversial!! For good reason!!! He's already pretty icky in the canon game material but also everything discussed in the fic isn't outside of the realm of possibility for him as we've seen like behavior in the industry before, so you made a good job of making him even More icky and giving the gang a good reason to make their own server. Good start!!!
Also I'm CRYINGGGG about the Stefan Karl Stefánsson stuff,,,, I MISS HIM SO MUCH. I read this fic on the way to a baseball game the other day so I had to be Very normal in the backseat of my family's car when I realized that all the links were clickable??? Bc I didn't know that?? So I went back and. I've NEVER seen that dentist song 😭 ITS SO FUNNY AND GOOD im crying,,, OR THE INTERVIEW WHERE HE DOES THE NOISES- that man was insane how did he DO THAT. Like i knew he COULD but like. On command??? Holy shit. Anyway, you know me. I was grinning ear to ear reading that section, I love imagining him being a VA for the Icelandic dub of Steel Samurai, I feel like he would have so much fun with the source material. Also also the link to Versti Fantur had me GRINNINGGGGG i fucking love that song, I'm glad you picked that one to include, it's SOOO good. The whole play is burned into my memory (in the best way possible) so it felt like a blast to the past that I dearly needed.
