Chapter 1: The Adoption
Chapter Text
Noel and Jinpachi had been married for about three years when they decided to adopt a child. (More like Noel was relentless in bringing the idea, and Jinpachi just sort of gave up and gave him what he wanted.) and ended up adopting two kids instead.
Jinpachi picks the recently orphaned two-year-old toddler with huge, round, glimmering cerulean blue eyes filled with hope, named Yoichi. Child of a Japanese immigrant couple. Jinpachi insists that he senses a hidden potential in him, but Noel is convinced that just because the baby has an ahoge that sticks like a sprout similar to Jinpachi’s own.
Noel personally wants the four-year-old with blond hair and piercing metallic blue eyes. he has a fair complexion and rosy cheeks. His name is Michael, and his mother gave him up for adoption when he was just an infant. All they know is he came from a slum, and that resonates deeply with Noel, who was also born in a gutter and fought his way out.
They have been debating it for days and still can’t choose either of the boys, and have decided to settle by adopting both. Jinpachi is the one who handles all the necessary paperwork.
His $140 million net worth was at the peak of his career as a pro soccer player. Noa earned more than enough to sustain a family of four. Enabling Ego to stay at home and work to obtain a master's degree in Computer Science, programming, and engineering through an online course.
They don’t have permanent residence yet and opt to rent an apartment room. Often moves out within two or three years to new place when Noa’s contract ended or when he is recruited by new club. They currently stayed in Madrid.
At first, everything seems fine. Both Michael and Yoichi are mild-mannered and well-behaved, rather quiet kids.
That’s until they found out baby Yoichi is ultra-sensitive to everything. Every single little thing triggers him.
The sound of a car honking, a whistling of a kettle boiling, a dog’s barking, and Noel closing the door a tad bit too loudly will send the toddler into tirades of non-stop wailing. And it’s not limited to strange sounds, unfamiliar scent, or slight temperature changes, which also make him cry.
Strong spatial awareness is a wonderful talent to have, but it’s nerve-wracking for other people to deal with. And Jinpachi is at his limit.
“Make him stop…” Jinpachi groaned muffled by a pillow as he awoke for the third time that night by a crying sound coming from the monitor that connected to the baby room.
“Your baby, your problem,” Noel muttered, already wearing earplugs. His husband has no intention of getting up at all.
“Why did I ever agree to the idea of adopting kids with you?” Jinpachi grumbles as he gets up from the bed, grabbing his glasses from atop the nightstand.
He opens the door and gasps in shock when he sees Michael already standing right in the doorway.
For a second, he thought it was an apparition.
“What are you doing here?” Jinpachi asks as he regains his composure. When the kid kept silent with a sort of emotionless face, he looked down and figured out what was wrong. He had his abdomen completely drenched.
“Noel, your kid pees his pants again.” He called out to the white haired. “And probably wet his bed too.”
“Give me a break…” Noel whines. “I have to get up early for training tomorrow. I need every minute of sleep I can get.”
“You’re not the only one; I also have work tomorrow.” Jinpachi retorts, agitated. Sleep deprivation makes his patience run thin.
“Take care of this,” He gestures at Michael. “I got a baby to deal with!” Jinpachi snaps, and at the same time, Yoichi’s wailing gets louder from the monitor.
Noel covered his face with both palms, exhaled loudly exasperatedly as Jinpachi left their bedroom.
It’s going to be a long night for all of them.
“Coach, you’re zoning out.” Noel blinked, looked around the practice field, and remembered he was in the middle of giving a brief to the U13 Re-Al team he was asked to coach temporarily during his off-season.
The twelve-year-old blonde, Leonardo Luna, was the one who called him out.
“Are you good?” Dada Silva asks with a concerned look.
Noel shook his head to get rid of the remaining drowsiness. “Yeah, yeah, uh, where were we?”
“You were explaining about the Transition drill, then suddenly went quiet. Like you were sleeping, but like your eyes are wide open, honestly, it’s super creepy.” The short kid with pastel rainbow hair said precociously.
“Right, sorry about that, Cablazo.” Noa offers a remorseless apology.
“It’s Cavasoz!”
Noel continues to explain today’s drill. It’s a transitional drill from offence to defense.
He split the team into two. Each team starts at the diagonal corners of the grid and players defend the goal on the inline, closest to them. One player from each team plays a 1 V 1 game at their assigned goal. The play is continuous until the ball goes over the end line or a goal is scored.
The objective is for the players to identify the situation and take advantage of it. Switching between defending and attacking, and so forth. The quicker the players can recognize the situation, the easier it is for them to exploit their option.
The practice went on until one team scored five goals. Noel watches the practice from the dugout. (And might be able to catch some nap while he’s at it.)
His eyelids were getting heavier with each passing second. No matter what he did, Noel couldn’t get rid of brain-addled fogginess resulting from sleep deprivation.
He was up at three A.M in the morning doing laundry. When he comes back to the bedroom, he only finds that Michael (who has already changed into fresh PJs) has claimed his spot on the bed. Jinpachi has taken Yoichi to their bed, holding him in his arms so he can immediately soothe him in case he starts crying again.
Noel tried to get back to sleep, but no matter how tired he was, he was too restless to fall back asleep. Not to mention, Michael is a kicker in his sleep, and for some reason, decided that Noel is the perfect target for him to practice his kicking.
And boy, he is strong for a four-year-old as he delivers a kick with enough impact to send Noel falling off the floor.
Noel usually always had consistently eight hours to sleep at night and very rarely deviates from it.
Ever since the two kids came into their lives, it has thrown their routine into disarray.
Jinpachi finally breathed in relief as he got a few hours of peace after he delegated the task of babysitting Yoichi and Michael to Anri. She is the daughter of Jinpachi, her former coach, and is currently joining an exchange student program at her college and chose Madrid, Spain, as her destination country because she wanted to learn more about Soccer.
She is adamant about joining JFA once she graduates and aims to change the way of Soccer in Japan. The same vision that she shares with Jinpachi. They had grown close during his time in Japan's middle-tier domestic league under her father's coaching and became a sort of surrogate younger sister to him.
She’s a good babysitter as she manages to keep them entertained for so long. She adores them and was more than happy to watch over them for a couple of hours.
Being a workaholic as he is, Jinpachi has gotten used to sleep deprivation. What he’s not prepared for is being jolted awake by a crying baby every hour or so in the night.
Last night, Yoichi was crying because there was a mosquito in his room. The sound of the insect bothered him so much that he wouldn’t stop crying until Jinpachi took him out of the room.
This is going to be the routine he had no choice but to get used to.
Just then, the sound of Yoichi crying comes from the living room. And there goes his peaceful time.
Their once neat living room (Mostly thanks to Noa's effort) is now littered with various toys and legos pieces and Alphabet blocks all over the place. Both Noa and Ego often too tired to picked them up as they settled with having kids around.
“I’m sorry, Ego-san, Yocchan suddenly cried, and I don’t know what to do,” Anri said, panicking as she tried to calm the baby by making funny faces to no avail. It makes him cry harder instead.
“He’s just hungry,” Jinpachi said nonchalantly as he headed to the kitchen.
Yoichi is very fussy when it comes to his milk, and they need to follow strict instructions to prepare it.
From measuring the amount of the formula, the amount of water used, and the temperature of boiling the water, to the way of shaking the bottle to mix the formula. One slight misstep and he will throw a fit and won’t drink it.
So far, only Jinpachi manages to prepare it to his liking.
But when he tried to feed him, Yoichi refused, flailing his tiny arms in protest, even trying to kick the bottle. Running out of patience, Jinpachi tried to shove the bottle with more force into the baby’s face. It only causes him to retaliate by landing a powerful kick on the bottle’s impact point, sending it flying directly into the trash can. Successfully performed his very first Direct Shot.
“What a flawless technique and control.” Anri’s jaw dropped at the accuracy of the tiny baby’s kick.
The child indeed has a talent for being a striker.
Yoichi’s bawling grows louder, and his face turns completely red. He is clearly exhausted but won’t stop crying. The two adults are completely clueless, unable to figure out what he wants.
Until Michael pushed a lobster plushie into Yoichi’s arms, the baby’s cries finally subsided and turned into small sobs as he clutched the doll.
“Aw, he just wants his plushie.” Anri coos, relieved.
“This kid is going to be the end of me, one day.” Jinpachi sighs, head hung down tiredly.
Somewhat, Yoichi found it funny and started gurgling with laughter. The baby's cheerful voice brightened the room.
Well, at least it brings joy to him and makes it worth all the trouble.
"I don't think I can do this, this whole parental thing." Ego admitted as he slumped on the sofa, exhausted after managing to get Yoichi to sleep in his arms. Michael has gone to bed by himself hours ago; he was always easier to take care of than Yoichi, and it feels like he can take care of himself most of the time, despite only being a four-year-old.
Stacks of books of childcare are piled up on their coffee table and each day Noa would buy a new ones. Some of them contains information that can't be found on the internet.
Speaking of which, Noa is not faring that much better either. He got in trouble afterwards when some of the kid he coached got into a dispute over their score after he fell asleep in the middle of practice.
It's hard enough even with Noa here. Once the season starts, he'll be away most of the time, and the responsibility of taking care of both kids will fall on Ego. "These kids need a proper, stable family, not whatever we have."
"We're doing well so far. At the very least, the children are healthy." Noa is trying to reassure him as he reaches out to caress the baby's tiny head. The touch is delicate, and he can tell that Noa tries to be as tender as possible. (As not to wake him up)
Ego looked down at the sleeping baby in his arms. He could feel his soft breath, the small throb of his beating heart, and the warmth of his body. An existence so fragile, he could crumble at the slightest jolt. The baby is sleeping so peacefully, trusting him fully to be completely at ease being vulnerable in his presence.
"I was raised in a pretty stern household, and my parents have little patience toward anything that didn't measure up to their standards. My mother was especially strict in that regard, and my father is not a constant presence in my life. That's the only way of parenting I ever know." There is a reason behind Ego perfectionism and mostly due to his upbringing. He was always extremely strict toward himself, berating himself if he failed to reach the goal he set for himself.
Noa grabs his hand gently. "You know that you're not your parents, you're not going to be like them. I won't be like my dad either. I mean, personally, I don't remember much about him, but I'm convinced I can be a better dad than someone who left to buy a cigarette when I was three and never came back." Noa pauses, then adds. "Now that I think about it, it's not a high bar to pass."
"There is no bar to pass to begin with." Ego chortles, for once amused.
"No one is going to be able to do it perfectly from the get-go. We will be making mistakes, we'll mess up for sure, but we'll learn and we'll do better next time." Noa assured. "Besides, at this point, I'm already emotionally invested in them, so I won't be giving them up even if you decide to walk away. I'm determined to raise them even on my own."
"There is no way I can leave someone as clueless as you to raise two kids by yourself." Ego sighed. "Can't be helped, there will be a lot of work to do until we get used to it."
Few months has passed since they adopted the children and new changes in routine has been made in their household. Noa would take care the chores of cleaning and tidying up the place while Ego takes care of the cooking since he hates tidying up. He's been working hard on expanding his repertoire and goes from avid noodle cup consumer to a somewhat decent cook in a span of two months. Of course, Noa is the subject of testing his first few batches of meals, (Which made him had frequent visit to the bathroom) but Ego has been steadily improving and the kids starts to enjoy the meals he makes.
Everything seems to goes well as the family starting to adjust to each other. Michael no longer wary around them and start showing his more energetic personality, and turns out he is quite hyperactive kid and curious for just about anything. Yoichi is shyer and more listless but he began to open up as well. Obviously at first he only feel safe around Ego but he starts taken liking on Noa as well. After a while, he's no longer crying when Noa picks him up.
One of Noa's happiest moment was the first time Michael calls him 'Vati' and Yoichi calls him 'Papa'
Their once quiet and peaceful apartment room is now brightened with sounds of children laughters. Their once monotone and mundane routine now filled with sparks of surprises here and then. Whenever they did something, the kids will hovering around with looks of curiosity watching over them or following them all over the house, trying to imitate what they're doing.
That's why when Noel comes home one day, he is struck by the unusual quietness. Usually, once he opened the door, Michael would run up to him, asking how his day was going, and Yoichi would follow as fast as his wobbly steps could carry him.
But today he is met with complete silence, which is a bit unnerving.
“Boys?” He called and met with no answer. Worried, he raised his pace until he saw Ego in the common room.
“Jin, where are the kids?” In response, Ego raises his fingers to his lips and gestures toward the coach.
Noel was surprised to see both of them sitting on the couch, unmoving, completely fixated on the LIVE football match currently ongoing between Barcha and PXG in France. Not even seem to notice his presence.
“Uhh…what is this?” Noel asks, befuddled by the sight before him. He had never seen them so entranced by anything before.
“They've been like this for about thirty minutes since the match started.” Ego smirks. “This is proof that these two have an immensely High Football IQ.”
“Really?” Noel asks, uncertain.
“They may not yet have grasped the concept of the game because of the limited cognitive development, but they are so immersed in it that they ignore everything else.” Ego continues his rambling with more enthusiasm than his usual deadpan, neutral tone. “They can start training four times a week, twenty minutes each session, then I will gradually extend it as they grow.”
“Aren’t Yoichi a bit too young?” Noel looks at the blue-haired toddler. Eyes sparkling as he sees Lavinho’s spectacular Ginga style. That dribble brings back memories of the time they had a match with each other. By combining the concept of Capoeira in his soccer technique, he develops a flexible and unpredictable dribble that almost nobody can match.
“The earlier, the better. That way, he’ll figure out the way to harness his weapon faster.” Ego delivered the line with a wicked smirk, indicating he had already formed a plan in his mind of all sorts of training regimes he was going to prepare.
Noel can only sigh. Once his husband invested in something, nothing could stop him. “At least don’t overdo it. Remember, they are still toddlers.”
From now on, if he wants to kick back and relax, he can just play a footage of his matches for the kids, and he’ll have peace for about ninety minutes.
----------------- Omake -------------------
Ego tried teaching the boys to say each other names
“Alright, repeat after me. Mi-ka-el.” Ego tried to spelled Michael’s name as slow as he can. “Now try saying it.”
Yoichi staring at him blankly for a bit then open his mouth. “Mi…Mi…Miha…” He struggled to say the last part. “Mi…Mya!” He ended the sentence with happy gurgle.
“No, no, you’re wrong, it’s Michael. Mi-ka-el.” Ego repeats again but Yoichi once again said. “Mya!” feeling very proud for saying it despite the incomplete sentence.
He turns to Michael. “Now’s your turn. Try saying Yoichi. Yo-i-chi.” Perhaps it would be easier since the blonde is older.
Michael is quiet for a bit, seems to forming the words in his mind before saying. “Yo…Yochi.”
“No, no, it’s Yo-i-chi!” Ego tried again, hoping it would get through to Michael.
But the blond once again said. “Yochi!” while pointing at the dark blue-haired baby.
At the same time, Yoichi is pointing at the blonde and said. “Mya!”
Ego letting out chagrined sighs, it won’t be tractable but he never imagined it would be this difficult to make the kids learning new words. It seems the kids that they adopted aren’t very bright after all.
Chapter 2: Meet the Grandfather
Summary:
This is my version of the inception of New Generation XI.
Notes:
Ego is Ray Dark son but chooses to use his mother’s surname after his parents divorce (The other reason is because he hates his dad’s surname.) He takes heavily after his mother so people don’t realize he is a Hāfu.
Ray isn’t an abusive father, he just emotionally distant and mostly absent, having an unrealistic expectation on his kid. Treating people more like a tool than a human being and only acknowledge someone that high-skilled in football and don’t care much about the rest. You know, typical anime dad archetype of a rival characters.

Chapter Text
Two years later
Stade de France, commune of Saint-Denis
The sounds of eighty thousand viewers filled the stadium, each one cheering on the team in the currently ongoing match. Today, it’s a World Cup Semifinal match between Paris X Gen and Manshine City.
Among the crowd of thousands, two little kids stand on their seats, watching the match with excitement and anticipation. Their tiny cheers mingle among roaring crowds.
“Otou-san! otou-san! Look at that, it’s Papa!” Yoichi pulled on Jinpachi’s sleeves as he pointed to player number 9 on the field at the same time, Michael yelled, “Get them!”
Jinpachi, that looks like he wanted to be anywhere but there, can only be sighs. If it’s up to him, he would rather watch the match from TV, where it’s calm and quiet enough for him to analyze the match without interruption and loud noises (He especially hates the particular loud sound produced by Vuvuzela). But the two kids wanted to come and support Noel directly, and they had been begging to watch the match in a stadium for so long. They weren’t even half this excited during their last trip to Disneyland.
“Yes, yes, it’s papa and he’s doing his best.” He said, putting a blue cap back on Yoichi’s head that had fallen earlier when he jumped around his seat.
To little Yoichi and Michael, Noel Noa is more than just their adoptive dad; he is their idol, their role model, and the kind of Striker they aim to become.
Watching them play in a stadium like this feels like tearing open an old wound. Knowing that he would never step into those fields again, would never be part of a national team, and would never have a chance to win a World Cup. But those are all things that Jinpachi kept only to himself.
Everyone was roaring when Noa scored, pulling a magnificent hat-trick, ending the match, and bringing victory for PXG over Manshine with a score of 3-4 during the second half of the game.
“It’s my loss again, Noa.” Chris Prince said. The youngster has approached Noel after the match.
“As expected of the World Best Striker, you truly are strong.” The blond smirked. “But don’t let it get over your head, I’ll develop a technique to best your playstyle and win next time!”
“Come at me any time. I’ll defeat you again and get even stronger than I am now.” Noa delivers the line in a powerful tone that evokes both fear and awe from his opponent.
“Your ego truly knows no bounds,” Chris said, shaking his head but smiling in admiration.
He doesn’t even need to raise his voice to intimidate others. Even his team knows not to cross their line when it comes to him. To the public, The World's Best Striker is a stoic man with few words. His poker face was almost always emotionless, and he never discussed his private life, making him seemingly always shrouded in mystery.
Chris never knew anyone could evoke an emotion from the (allegedly) cyborg. Until today.
“Papa!” Two kids were running toward them, and Noa immediately knelt and accepted them with open arms.
“Mihya! Yocchan! You came to cheer me on? Papa is so happy!” He cuddled them, smushing their cheeks together.
Everyone around them stood speechless with their mouth agape at the sight. They had never seen Noa show affection before (or even use pet names)
Chris turns to Ego, who walks up to them. Pointing at the dad-son bonding scene with utter confusion.
“That's just how he acts with the kids, don’t mind it.” The bespectacled man said jadedly
“Still, that’s a 180-degree change from his usual self. I dare say I don’t believe he is the same person as he was a minute ago.” Chris said with wry laughter. Then he moves closer to Ego.
“Hearing all the stories about you from Snuffy and Lavinho made me want to go against you in your prime, even just once, too bad I will never get a chance to.”
Did this guy try to rile him up? Ego thought was aggrieved. Then again, Chris often lacks self-awareness of how condescending he sounds.
“I mean, you’re the man that Noel Noa acknowledges as a rival. I would be lying if I said I’m not curious about you.” Chris said with genuine curiosity, as if he were appraising a rare specimen as he moved, diminishing the distance between them.
“What are you talking about?” Noa put a stop to it by stepping between them.
Chris is dumbfounded. He doesn’t understand why Noa seems pissed; he feels like he just stepped into a landmine.
“It’s nothing,” Ego answered before Chris had a chance to let a single word out. “The kids wanted to see you before leaving, so I brought them here.”
“Michael, Yoichi, we’re going to leave soon. Say goodbye to your dad.” He told them.
Noel patted both Michael and Yoichi’s heads and said. “I’ll be back home soon, wait for me.”
“Make sure to bring home the World Cup!” Michael pumped his fist up.
“Do your best, papa!” Yoichi smiled and gave him a last hug.
Michael tends to wander off on his own the moment they take him off. They had just finished shopping and noticed he was gone when they exited the marketplace.
“This is why I told you to put him on a leash.” Ego grumbled as he held Yoichi’s hand with his right and carried shopping bags on his left. In contrast, Yoichi is an obedient kid who always sticks close to them, no matter where they go.
Noa sighs. “He is a child, not a dog.”
“It's called a child safety tether for a reason. Also, putting it on him doesn’t mean we're treating him like a dog, it’s to prevent situations like this!”
“Let’s look around the shopping district; he won’t go too far,” Noel assures, casting a glance at the crowd of passersby trying to spot the tiny blond among them.
After searching for twenty minutes, they found the kid in front of the sports department store.
Noel immediately rushed to him. “Michael! We’ve been looking all over for you! You know you shouldn’t run off on your own!”
“Sorry…” Michael mumbled guiltily.
“What you got there?” Noel asks when he sees the boy clutching a white ball.
“Where did you get that?” Jinpachi asks suspiciously.
“This kind Opa here bought it for me!” Michael beamed, pointing at the person behind him who made Ego freeze in his tracks.
A sophisticated old man in an elegant suit with long hair and a ducktail-style beard. He was carrying a cane with a gem on top that was carved to resemble a soccer ball.
“Michael, give the ball back to him. We told you to never accept stuff from a stranger.” Ego reprimanded him after composing himself.
“Calling your own father a stranger? How cold of you, Jinpachi.” The old man said stoically.
“We haven’t spoken to each other for years. I believe it's only appropriate to address you as a stranger.” Ego said sharply, then shifted his glance back at the blonde boy. “Give it back, Michael, I’ll buy you a new one.” He said in a more demanding tone.
The boy seems hesitant for a moment, but Noa comes to his defense. “Cut him some slack, Jin. It’s okay for him to receive a present from his grandfather.” He said, trying his best to calm the tense situation, knowing how rocky the relationship between this father and son was.
“He’s nobody's grandfather.” Ego muttered under his breath but relented.
“You adopted kids.” Ray glanced over Michael, then shifted toward Yoichi.
“This one is Michael.” Noa patted the kid on the back, then pointed at the other one, who was now hiding behind Ego, seemingly intimidated by Ray’s presence. “And that one is Yoichi.”
“Come over here and say hi to grandpa,” Noa called out, but Yoichi shook his head and remained in his place.
“He is a bit shy,” Noa said wryly. He turns back to Michael and says. “Now, what do we say to someone who gave you a gift?”
Michael ran up to Ray and said. “Thank you, Grandpa!” He beamed with joy.
Ray bent down, looking at Michael, “Do you like soccer?”
“Love it!” The boy answered swiftly.
“Do you want to play in the league when you grow up?”
“Like Vati? Of course I am!” He declared proudly, puffing his little chest.
A small smile broke through Ray Dark’s uptight face at the boy’s confidence.
“I’m sure you will.” He said with uncharacteristic warmth in his tone.
“I would love to stay a little longer, but unfortunately, I have a tight schedule today.”
“When have you ever been available?” Ego chortles derisively at him, rolling his eyes.
“I’ll come visit as soon as I’m able to,” Ray assures him. Before walking away, he turned briefly to Noel and nodded. “Good day, Mr. Noa.”
The surprise visit came on Saturday morning when Ray Dark arrived unannounced, knocking on their front door. Bringing all sorts of gifts for his ‘grandchildren’
Michael immediately, ecstatically ripping open all the presents like it’s Christmas morning. Various new toys, games, and gift wrappings are scattered all over their living room. Yoichi took longer to warm up, but after a slice of chocolate cake, he’s all snuggly and happily sitting next to Ray, letting the old man tousle his hair.
“I love grandpa coz he let me eat all the candies!” Yoichi quips, popping another marshmallow into his mouth.
“Grandpa is not the one who is going to take you to the dentist when you get cavities from all those sweets.” Noel reminded him. Irked by the four-year-old (un) intentionally dissing his strict diet.
“Stop bribing my kids and tell me the real reason you bother to come all the way here.” Demanded Ego, folding his arms across his chest. He knew his father all too well to be beguiled by his fake generosity.
“I do have ulterior motives,” Ray admits, and hands a neatly wrapped package to Michael.
“More gifts?!” The boy’s eyes lit up, and he eagerly took it. When he opened it, he found football kits and jerseys for two.
“I’m enrolling them both in the Real Youth academy to be part of our newest U6 recruits. They can start attending practice next Monday.”
“No, not happening.” The ego completely rejects the idea. “I’ll be the one training them.”
“Exactly, you’ll be the one training them. Along with other kids.”
“Say what now?”
“You turned this bozo into a class striker.” Ray pointed at Noa with his cane. “You can do the same with a bunch of kids.”
“I have a vision. I want to create a team consisting of the best players from all over the world. Shining diamonds among the unpolished lump of talents. The new generation world XI, selected for their individual abilities and potential. Each member possesses outstanding abilities that allow them to shine in their respective position.” Ray interlocked his fingers under his chin and said. “I will call them Best Eleven, the best eleven players the world has ever seen.”
“Best eleven? You mean like a convenience store?” Noa raised his brows.
“It’s seven-eleven.” Ego corrected him, then continued as he turned toward his father. “Do I need to remind you that I’m not a kid-friendly person? You know, traits I inherit from you.”
“You adopted two kids.” Ray gestured at Michael and Yoichi.
“More like coerced into it.” He glanced at Noel. “These two are exceptions.”
“You have eyes that can recognize talent. Something that you inherit from me.” Ray said with a bit of pride in his tone. “One of these two might have the potential to be part of the new generation,” Ray said, and at the same time, Michael pushed away expensive, quality cleats and picked an airplane with a remote control. “I’m gonna play this on the yard!” He yelled excitedly as he ran toward the back door. Completely uninterested in the football kits.
“We’ll just wait and see.” The old man said with conviction.
"So, what you're going to do? Will you accept his offer?" Noel asks as he placing two steaming mug of tea on the table. The two of them are the ones in the kitchen
after they finished their dinner the two boys ran to their room to play a game in their new playstation 4 gifted by Ray Dark.
"I'm still not sure, it's always like this with him." Ego sighing while grumbles. "That old man doing things his own way without even bother to discuss it with me!"
"I think it's a wonderful opportunity for both Michael and Yoichi to learn soccer along with other kids that they can befriend with." Noel suggests.
Is not like Ego can see the flaw in that logic. Usually only children deemed to be prodigy in soccer that can attend Re Al youth academy.
Most of them are recruited by Talent Scout and they won't waste their time to train children they believe to be mediocre.
The probability for children as young as Michael and Yoichi to be recruited is close to impossible.
Besides, their method of training are somewhat aligning with Ego's own (Shows how much he taken after his father)
"I don't think I have what it takes. I never been a people person to begin with. Besides, why did he choose to ask for my help specifically?”
“Before meeting you. I view football only as a mean to make money.” Noa admits. Back when he was just starting soccer, he didn’t have particular interest or love for the sport just the fact that he able to play better than regular kids. He trained to master the sport because it was his only ticket to escape the slum. To get himself out of poverty.
“Had I never meet you, I would probably ended up being a mid-tier player in Local League. Never bother to improve beyond my initial capability and satisfied as long as I able to earn stable income.” His golden eyes met Noa’s coal black pupils. The intensity of Ego’s gaze is always mesmerize him. Every time their gazes met, Noa always getting sucked into that maelstrom. Whatever thoughts he had gone in an instant, as if the other man had a full control over him.
“Our rivalry pushed me to the edge, forcing me to keep honing myself, improves day by day to find a way to overcome you. You’re the one that taught me how to perfected my weapon. Only after meeting you that I truly become an Egoist with insatiable hunger. You’re the one that gave me purpose, a goal to strife for, to stand on the top. You’re the person that make it possible for me to be the World’s best striker.” His first loss to Ego was the moment where Noa is humbled and learn that he was not the strongest on the field. Their teamwork during a game was when Noa has his first awakening moment.
“You hold the ability to awakened someone’s potential, to draw the hidden ability beneath the surface. If there is someone that can help this kids to utilise their weapons, then I can’t think of anyone suited for the role other than you. You’re an Egoist maker after all.” Noa took Ego's pale hand in his, observing how was small and lithe it was compared to his own, almost delicate. He then placed a kiss on the back of his palm.
Ego turned his head to the side, slightly flushed at the praise. He is not the kind of person that used receiving a compliment. "You always a smooth talker, you really are a French after all, underneath that stoicism."
"But... I guess, I can give it a try." Ego said, finally accepted.
Notes:
Re Al youth academy inspired by Real Madrid academy irl called La Fábrica.
All information I obtain from this academy is based on an interview from ten years ago by some soccer player that once attend La Fábrica so there might be things that already been changed/improved.
Just additional info : Isagi called Noa (Papa) and Ego (Otou-san)
Kaiser called Noa (Vati) and Ego (Vater)
Ego just won't stand cutesy name-calling, me think.
Chapter 3: Real Family
Notes:
Am I the only one that find it weird that Noel is named Noel despite born in April? He should have switched his birthday with Kaiser. Papa Noel is literally French name for Santa Claus.

Chapter Text
“Today, you guys will start training with a bunch of other kids. You guys better behave yourself.” The bespectacled man squeezed a generous amount of mayonnaise into his salad and drenched the fresh vegetables in a thick condiment.
“I wish they won't be mean…” Yoichi murmurs as he sips his overly sweetened cup of milk.
“Because you’re crying all the time, they pick on you.” Tutted Michael while lazily chewing his toast. Giving the younger boy a half-lidded stare, making him whimper with teary eyes.
“Stop teasing your brother, Michael. Also, don’t talk while eating, and don’t munch with your mouth open. It’s a bad manner.” Scolded Noa as he poured coffee for himself.
“But this means I’m going to live in Berlin by myself starting next month.” Noa sighs. He already signed the contract with Bastard München, so there is no way to call it quits now.
“Are you going to be lonely, Papa?” Yoichi turns to him, tilting his head to the side adorably.
Noa smiled a little and patted him on the head. “It would definitely be lonely without you guys around.”
“Then, when I grow up, I’m going to join the same club as you, so you won’t be lonely!” Yoichi beamed, grinning from ear to ear. That seemed to cheer Noa a little.
“Heh, for me, I’ll be reaching the top of Re Al and surpassing Vati by then. I’ll be the next World’s best striker!” Michael declared as he spread jam over his second serving of toast.
“No, me!” Argued Yoichi.
“Hurry up and finish your breakfast. We need to get going soon, we can’t be late on our first day.” Ego reminded them, putting an end to their insignificant bickering as Michael and Yoichi raised their pace and wolfed down everything on their plates.
Since last week, the family has moved into one of Ray Dark's family mansions in Madrid (The one that he puts under Ego’s name). The place is very close to the Re Al academy, only a minute’s walk and less than five if they used vehicles.
Ego definitely isn’t thrilled, but the two kids are unbelievably excited. They had explored the large mansion for the past week and discovered something new each day.
Once they exited the mansion, a limousine waited for them outside with Ray Dark’s personal butler.
“Master Ray has instructed me to escort you to the academy, Master Jinpachi.”
“No, we’re going to attract attention if we go with that. I'd rather walk.” He said, but Michael and Yoichi jumped into the Limo without hesitation.
“Amazing, the leather is so soft! And there is even a TV here!” Michael said as he turned on the large monitor and made himself comfortable in the seat.
“Look, Otou-san! Grandpa has prepared snacks for us!” Yoichi pointed at an assortment of foods on the table.
“It seems like the young masters have made their choices. Shall we depart, master?” The butler asks with confidence, knowing Ego has no way to decline now.
“You’re as annoying as ever.” Ego grunts with a triangle vein popping on his temple.
As expected, they are the first to arrive on the practice field. The two boys are astounded by the size of the Football field. They are only ever trained in a cramped backyard of their previous apartment or a small field in the park with lots of people around. They have only ever seen this kind of place on the match on TV, but never actually stepped foot in it.This field was originally used as a practice field for the older kids in the Real youth team for practice, but they were allowed to use it in the morning while they were at school.
Ego lets the two run around as they please as he reviews the training for the day. Practices for this age group are about improving social skills, coordination, and learning the basic concepts of Soccer. The purpose of this training is to inadvertently teach them the skills they will need to play soccer.
“Good morning, you must be the coach.” A small but polite voice broke his train of thought. Ego realizes the first kid has arrived after them.
The boy is rather small, with a neat buzz cut, sharp eyes, and impeccable manners as he introduces himself. “Pleased to meet you, my name is Julien Loki. I’ll be in your care for today, Coach Ego. I hope we can get along. I promised I won’t give you any trouble.”
The introduction is proven to be unnecessary as Ego has already memorized every important detail of the children under his tutelage. Nonetheless, a basic manner is still a requirement. He must have been raised well by his parents.
“Are you by yourself? What about your parent?” He looked around but didn’t find anyone other than the kid. Normally, a child as young as he would be accompanied by their parents. But little Loki doesn’t seem to come with anyone.
“It’s rather unfortunate, both my parents have urgent business to attend to for the day, that’s why they couldn’t come and greet you. But despite her busy schedule, my mother has told me to send her regards.”
Ego is rather impressed by the kid's maturity but decides not to let it show. “Alright, good job for showing up early. Go on and greet your new teammates. Once the other kids arrive, we will begin the practice.” He gestured toward Michael and Yoichi, who were in the middle of passing a ball to each other.
“Understood, I will wait patiently.” Loki nodded politely before heading in the direction of the kids. It’s hard to believe he is the same age as Michael.
About thirty-five kids shows up for practice on the first day. That’s more than half of the participant on the list.
Some of the kids on the list are the candidates that Ray Dark himself chose himself, he must have known their capabilities to some extent. The old man has always had keen eyes to discern talents, like he said is the (probably) only trait Ego inherited from him and he both appreciate and loathed it at the same time.
Their names on the list are marked. Of course Julien Loki is one of them, another talented one is Bunny Iglesias, Don Lorenzo and Oliver Aiku, another hafu with heterochromatic eyes.
Charles is the youngest one among the kids under his care as he just turn three two months ago. He is even younger than Yoichi (Ego was sure Yoichi would be the youngest among them)
Ego has them gather in a circle as he gave them briefing before they starts the first drill for the day. Considering their ages, he can’t give them harsh trainings.
“How many of you have played soccer before?” He asks and everyone raises their hands. He expected that much.
“Do you know what the most important thing to have for playing a soccer?” The kids shakes their heads.
“It’s ego. An ego to stand out and steal the spot light in the field. Football is, at its core, a sport about scoring goals even at the expense of your teammates. The best player is the one that scores the most!”
The children staring at him with blank eyes, completely clueless at his passionate speech.
“Never mind, let just starts the practice.” Ego clears his throat. Obviously the kids won’t understand what he’s talking about with exception of Michael and Yoichi.
Since it was the first day of coaching, Ego decides to give them a light exercise and easy drill just to gauge their abilities. The practice only lasted about forty-five minutes. Afterwards, he left them some free time to socialize with each other while he submitted today’s training result.
It’s about time for their parents to pick them up. Some of the parents don’t even take this seriously and treat this as some kind of daycare. Not that Ego can blame them, at this age, none of them hold out much hope that their kid is going to continue playing professionally.
Most of them are like Michael and Yoichi, who already have some insight into the basics of soccer, although their abilities and skills are of varying degrees.
Out of all of them, only Loki and Iglesias stand out, especially Loki; he possesses a speed that can rival a kid twice his age.
They might be ready for advanced-level training, but Ego doubts all the other kids are able to keep up.
“Oh, there you are, Ego. So it’s true that you’re taking over a role to coach the U6 team.” Ego was about to return to the practice field when he ran into a familiar face.
“Marc Snuffy…what brings you here?” Ego asks with disinterest.
“I’m going to pick up my boy, he is one of the kid that you coaches.” Snuffy reminded him.
“Oh, that Lorenzo kid.” Lorenzo did introduce himself as Snuffy's adopted kid earlier. It didn’t get mentioned in the report that he received about the boy
The boy is tall but scrawny, clearly underfed. He wondered if Snuffy feed him enough in a day.
“Where did you get him? you didn’t abduct him did you?” Ego asks skeptically. Snuffy is a terrific soccer player and if judging by overall ability, he would be the best player in the world. But definitely not someone that Ego will trust with a childcare furthermore Snuffy also never display any interest in raising a child.
Snuffy laughs at the piercing accusation. “Of course not. I found him on a street, rummaging through trash cans, scavenging for anything edible left. He was just skin and bone then. Poor kid. He came from family with too much mouth to feed and was tossed out of the house to fend for himself.”
“So, how was he? any good?” Says Snuffy, turns to Ego with curious look.
“I supposed” Ego answered with brief nod. “At this point I could call him a lump of talent. He has unusual talent of being a flexible defender. A center back role certainly will suit him with his ability to intercept an opponent shot.”
“Whoa, you got all that just by coaching him for one day? You’re amazing as always.” Snuffy shakes his head, impressed and adds. “Terrifyingly so…”
Ego letting out exasperated sighs. “Still, I’m not good with children. I don’t know what’s going through that old man’s mind to assigned me to coach a bunch of kids.”
“But you’ve been doing a pretty great job raising Mihya and Yocchan.”
“That and this are completely different. Besides, I don’t have Noel to help me with this.”
“I heard that he’s recruited by Bastard München right?” The news of Noel Noa joining Bastard München already spread like a wildfire in the football community within a span of couple of days. German fans in particular are elated to have him play for their home team.
“He'll be leaving to Berlin next month.” And Ego wonders how he would fare dealing with all this stuff on his own.
“You’ll get used to it, just treat it as an experience to starting out as a coach.” Snuffy laughed and pats him on the back.
Meanwhile, on the field
The children are animatedly chatting with each other as they start to get acquainted with one another. Being as flashy as he is, Michael easily attracts the attention of other kids and finds himself surrounded by many admirers.
Yoichi himself also befriended a couple of new friends. Especially after they found out his dad is the famous Noel Noa.
“Wait, you say Coach Ego is your daddy, and Noel Noa also your daddy?” Agi asks, confused.
“Umu!” Yoichi nods eagerly. “Both of them are my daddies! Papa Noel and Otou-san are my and Michael’s parents.”
Agi blinked in confusion, then raised his eyebrow. “Isn’t that weird that you have two dads and don’t have a mom?”
“It’s not weird!” protested Yoichi.
“How come Yocchan has two daddies?” Charles wondered aloud.
“They weren’t his biological parents; both Michael and Yoichi are adopted,” Loki explained.
“That means they weren’t real family,” Gesner adds.
“Yocchan family is real!” His voice cracking and body shaking as he lets out desperate cries.
“If you’re not related by blood, then you’re not family. Being adopted means that you just play pretend, your family is fake.” Drago said.
“It’s not fake!” Yoichi's tears start falling.
“Oh, how I pity you both. You two were unwanted by your real parents, so they gave you up for adoption.” Grim placed his hand over his heart and said dramatically.
At this point, the other kids start chanting ‘That’s right!’ ‘Your family is weird!’
“But…it’s not fake…we are real family…Yocchan family isn’t weird…” Yoichi uttered with quivering lips before breaking down, sobbing.
The kids ceased their taunting, afraid to get scolded by Ego once he came back to find his kid bawling.
“Aah, now you’re crying.” Canali shakes his head.
“You truly are a cryba-“ Before Swift could finish his sentence, Michael jumped and delivered a swift round kick straight to his face. Then, after the first kid was down, he went to attack all the other kids who jeered at them. It quickly escalated into a huge fight, and despite him being outnumbered, Michael still came out the winner.
“So what if we’re not related? We love each other as family! There is nothing weird about it!” Michael grabs Agi by his collar.
“It is weird! A family without a mom and a dad can’t be called a real family! It’s not normal!” Insisted Agi.
“Does that mean my family is weird, too?” Loki questioned, surprising the other kids. “I don’t have a dad and was only raised by my moms. Are you saying my family is weird, too?” He narrowed his eyes at Agi, who flinched under the sharpness of his glare. “Besides, who are you to decide what is normal?”
“If related by blood is what makes family, then that means I have to stay with abusive parents who abandoned me on the street just because we are related.” Lorenzo butted in, staring at Drago. “Had Papi Snuffy not adopted me, I probably would have died of hunger in a ditch by now.”
His statement turns everyone on the field silent and at the same time Ego has returned along with Snuffy and was surprised to find out the mess they had caused.
“I’m not wrong! Those kids started it first,” Michael grumbled, then hissed in pain as Ego dabbed a ball of cotton soaked in alcohol over the light cuts on his arm. “They made Yoichi cry and say all that nasty stuff about us!”
The bespectacled man sighs at the response. It was partly his fault as well, as he should have known better not to leave those kids alone for too long, considering Michael’s temper.
“You’re still in the wrong. You are the one who hit them first.” Ego pointed out the fact as he placed a bandage over the cuts. “You should know that starting a fight is bad. If Noel hears about this, he’ll be very disappointed.” Michael turned quiet, lowered his head in frustration and shame. Even at a young age, he knows that if he did anything bad, it would tarnish Noel Noa's reputation as well.
“Being recruited into Re Al is an extremely rare opportunity not granted to many. Don’t waste Grandfather Ray's effort that gets you enrolled in it by getting expelled over a petty fight.” Ego reminded him strictly. “You two have to apologize to those kids tomorrow, understood?”
“I guess, as your instructor, I’ll have to endure the headmaster (Ray) lecture for this as well.” Ego scratches his head, perturbed by what awaits him.
He looked down when he felt a slight tug on his pants and found Yoichi staring at him with wide, worried eyes. “Does this mean you get in trouble too?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t want to trouble you…” Yoichi snivels, eyes glistened with tears.
“You don’t need to worry about me, I’ll get this sorted out somehow. Just try to get along with other kids.” Ego, reassuring him, patted him on the head.
“I’m not upset at being picked on, I’m used to it.” Yoichi huffed. “I just can’t stand them badmouthing our family. They said we were weird or not a real family because I don’t have a mom.” Yoichi mumbled, no doubt what Agi had said really bothered him.
“Ours aren’t the only different ones. Loki and Lorenzo are also the same.” Michael said, reminding him of when the two had stood up for them earlier. “Besides, who cares about the opinion of those losers? We have a bond as strong as real family, that’s enough, isn’t?”
“You have to understand that they don’t do it on purpose. Most likely, they based their knowledge of family on their own. That’s the only definition they ever knew.” Ego is fixing his glasses. “We might not be a conventional family, but like Michael said, the most important thing is the bonds we share. Blood ties isn’t all that what makes a family."
“Yeah! Yocchan loves this family!” Yoichi jumped and gave Michael a tight hug, making the blond yelp in pain since his body was covered in bruises. “Ow! Ow! Ow! You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?!”
“Oh, sorry, Mihya, I forgot you’re hurt.” Yoichi profusely apologized but lacked remorse.
As the kids arguing, Ego puts the first-aid kit back to the cabinet. He needs to find a way to resolves the issue by tomorrow.
Notes:
Kaiser make trouble on his first day again, but at least this time his act is justifiable.

Chapter Text
“I’ll probably be home late today, so I won’t be able to have dinner together,” Noa told Ego just as he finished making dinner. Tonight, he had agreed to meet with Snuffy and Lavinho to hang out and catch up since they happened to be in town.
“Make sure not to have too many drinks, you’ll be driving home by yourself.” Ego reminded him as he handed Noa his coat.
“Don’t worry, I won’t.” He said as he put it on and wrapped a scarf around his neck. It's not like Noa likes drinking that much anyway. Even during his youth, he seldom went his way to get drunk to the point of getting hungover to celebrate a victory. To him, it's a merely pointless activity, although Snuffy would probably insist on him to at least have one shot.
“When will you be home, Papa?” Yoichi asks innocently as he follows Noa to the entrance.
“Probably past midnight, you don't have to wait for me. You need to sleep early so you can grow big and strong.”
“Don’t wanna! Yocchan wants to wait so we can watch a match together!” Yoichi argued stubbornly.
“You can’t. You have to sleep on time so you won’t get tired for practice tomorrow.” Noa reminded him.
“Then, I’ll go with you!” Yoichi persistently grabbed the end of Noa’s coat, latching onto him, preventing him from going out. Desperately clinging on him.
“Absolutely not! Your papa is going to meet with other adults, it’s a place you’re far too young to enter.” Ego grabs him and yanks him away from Noa’s coat.
Yoichi frowned, cast his gaze down dourly, and sniffled.
With Ego tutoring Michael for the entrance exam to Re Al academy, and he’s not allowed to disturb, Yoichi will be left alone for a couple of hours with games, cartoons, and comics as the only source of entertainment. He used to spend every waking hour with Michael; suddenly being separated like this, he must undoubtedly feel lonely. That’s why nowadays, Yoichi frequently asks Noa to watch a football match with him.
Noa bent down to Yoichi's eyes level and said. “We can’t watch a match together tonight, but how about all of us going out this weekend for the entire day?”
Yoichi beamed at his suggestion. “Really? You promise?”
“I promise.” Noa’s expression turned fond as he assured Yoichi and intertwined their pinkies together. “Pinky promise.”
“Are you by yourself, sir? Did you have anyone that you specifically want to request to accompany you?” The receptionist welcomed him with a polite smile at the entrance of the club.
“No, I’m here to meet with someone. I believe the guest is named Snuffy.” Noa said stoically, and the receptionist, checking the list, then led him inside.
Noa is not the type who frequently visits nightclubs, not even during his bachelor days. Even when he got invited, he would have made an excuse to leave early. Ego is even worse, being as anti-social as he is, would never willingly set a foot in this kind of establishment.
Snuffy, on the other hand, is a party animal who never misses any occasion to throw a big celebration. Noa sometimes wonders how they even stayed friends all these years despite being so different from each other.
“Hey, over here!” Snuffy waved his hand at him once he saw Noa from one of the booths. Three hostesses accompany them in the booth. Lavinho arrived earlier than him and had already made himself comfortable, chitchatting with one of the hostesses.
Looks like they've already been there for quite some time, as there are already five empty beer bottles on the table as Snuffy orders another one.
His golden eyes darted at the only kid at the table. “Is it even allowed to bring a kid in here?” He is asking, making sure they won’t get in trouble for bringing underage here.
“I can’t find anyone to look after him while I’m gone, so I brought him along.” Snuffy shrugs with carefree laughter as if it’s not a big deal. “It's not like I’m bringing him to a strip club, so it's fi~ne.”
The kid named Lorenzo is sipping his orange juice while occasionally chattering animatedly with the hostess. He seems to be having a good time, at least.
Noel can’t imagine taking Michael and Yoichi along with him to this kind of establishment. Besides, it's not like he dares to; he’s too afraid of the consequences. If Ego found out about it, that’ll be an instant death sentence to him.
“Would you like me to accompany you, sir?” The hostess with long auburn hair asks him as she pours wine into his glass.
“No thanks, I’m married.” Noa puts his palm up to restrain her from pouring too much. He also flashed the band of matrimony on his ring finger to her.
“Relax, Noa, even married men often come here to have fun.” Lavinho jokes.
“I’m not one of them.” He answers curtly. After his father abandoned him, his mother also left him when he was thirteen, eloping with her new lover to avoid getting caught by the man’s family. The only thing that prevented him from living on the street was that Ray Dark had already noticed his talent and recruited him.
Thanks to that, he worked hard to develop his soccer skills and eventually met his future husband. He owes that old man a lot (Even though Ray still treats him like rubbish he picks from the street). But it’s not like his hostility is unfounded, since he did marry his son without his blessing. Mostly because Ego refuses to tell his father, as he doesn’t want him in his life.
Noa's way of upbringing has led him to heavily abhor any sort of infidelity.
Snuffy already knows his backstory and decided to change the subject. “It’s about time for Michael to take an entrance exam for the Re Al academy as well, right? He’ll begin his first year alongside my Lorenzo.”
“Jin has been pretty strict teaching him.” He has always been pretty strict when it comes to education. The tiger parenting style he inherits from his parent. The test is two weeks from now, and every day after their soccer practice, Ego would make Michael sit and study until dinner. (Which the kid undoubtedly hates)
“As expected of him, a scary coach must have wanted him to ace the test.” Lavinho whistles.
“By the way, why did you bring that big dolphin doll?” Noa glances at the giant dolphin doll that Lavinho carries with him. He’s been curious about it since he laid eyes on it.
Lavinho's eyes lit up as he started explaining. “Oh, there is this chick I’m seeing right now. She is one of the artists in the current art exhibition in Madrid. I met her yesterday, and although she is still young, she already has a kid. I’m planning to give this to the kid and curry his favor so he helps me get on his mom’s good side. I call it ‘Operation Dolphin’!”
“Good luck with that,” Noa said curtly.
“I admire your dedication, but I just can’t pursue a woman with a kid.” Snuffy leaned back on the couch.
“You’re saying that, but you adopted a kid yourself.” Lavinho is pointing at Lorenzo.
“Chick digs a guy with a kid. It makes me look mature and responsible.” Snuffy said, winking smoothly at one of the hostesses as she giggled reciprocally.
‘Bringing a child to a host club is anything but responsible,’ Noa said inwardly, but decides to keep quiet. He can’t help but feel worried about the kid’s future under Snuffy’s care.
“By the way, how were Mihya and Yocchan doing? I haven’t seen them in ages. I wonder how much they have grown. Maybe I should go visit them.” Lavinho smirks at Noa.
“They're getting better at soccer already, well, mostly Michael. He vastly improved; he can bounce a ball on his knees and even headbutt a ball now. Yoichi still has difficulty, but he’s getting the hang of it. He can now dribble a ball all the way to the goalpost without tripping even once! Also, the other day, Michael– “
“Stop it, Lavinho, once you get him started on his kids, he will never stop yapping about them,” Snuffy said. They both already knew how much of a doting father Noel can be.
“Oh, I heard Michael get in a fight the other day?” Lavinho turns to Snuffy. “You told me it happened during the first day of Ego’s coaching.”
“They did, but it wasn’t Mihya's fault! It was the other kids who teased them first!” Lorenzo suddenly spoke up, defending his friend.
“I heard about that. While I don’t condone fighting, I’m proud that he is protecting his brother and stands up for what he believes is right.” Noa said with a hint of pride in his tone. He then turns to Lorenzo and pats his head. “I’ll be thankful if you keep being a good friend to them, Lorenzo.”
Noa did brought up the topic of teaching Michael's a trick of self-defence that Noa himself picks up of the experience of living in a slum. Back then, He always on edge when he's on the street because in every corner he turned, there is always a risk he'll get mugged, or a burglar breaking into the house or fending off violent drunkard or addicts when he happened to bumped into one. Self-defence is necessary skill that might will save their lives one day.
Well, Michael at least because Yoichi's first instinct when encounter trouble is to avoid conflict while Michael run straight ahead into it. Unsurprisingly, Ego rejected his idea completely and scolding him in return. 'I am not raising a delinquent that using violence to resolve all his problem! If you have time for useless stuff like that, you might as well help them with their soccer practice!'
At first, Michael suggested they go to Warner Park, but since it’s a weekend and packed with people (Which Ego clearly detests) and Yoichi is still too young for most rides there, they decided to go elsewhere.
They start from visiting and touring an Ikono museum, where the kids have so much fun diving into a giant ball pit, playing arcade games, walking through a bamboo forest, and being mesmerized by the hanging lamps.
After that, they decide to take a walk around Retiro Park. After having lunch at one of the nearby restaurants, they rent a rowboat and paddle around the lake, while sometimes slowing down and letting the kids feed the ducks that swarmed around them. Afterwards, they decide to take a leisurely stroll around the shopping area.
It went pretty peacefully until Michael demanded to buy a porcelain figure from an antique shop.
“For the last time, Michael, it’s a no,” Noa said sternly. “You don’t really need it. Now put it back where you found it, before you accidentally drop it.”
“Hmph, cheapskates! I bet Grandpa would have bought it for me!” Michael hmphed and stomped his foot, but did as he told.
“I’m not going to raise a spoiled kid,” Noa said sternly. He might be doting, but he can be strict when the need arises. “I won’t allow you to waste money on junk that you’re going to get bored with a minute later.”
Another one of Michael's bad habits is his impulsivity. He always grabs the first thing he likes without thinking and buys it on a whim, only to get bored with it a few minutes later. That’s the reason he was never able to save up his allowance. Despite his fame and wealth, Noa has stayed relatively grounded and humble, and he wants to instills the same value to his children.
Although his recklessness is not entirely bad. Unlike Yoichi, who often ponders his decision, Michael is never afraid of taking a risk. An excellent mindset for a striker as he would never doubt himself to take a shot.
However, the same is not applied in this case. He needs to curb Michael's spendthrift tendency before it becomes a habit.
“Besides, there are some things that can’t be bought with money.”
“But it can buy things that make me happy,” Michael muttered, and he had always been a defiant child.
“Forget it! I’m going to go take a walk!” Michael puffed his cheek as he turned away and left the store.
Worried, Yoichi decides to follow him. Holding his hand so Michael won’t get lost again.
They spend time strolling around nearby until Michael is calm enough. But just as they walked beneath one of the store's aisles, they both heard a yell above them.
“Look out!”
Michael looked up and saw a camera falling in his direction. He realizes if he catches it directly with his face, it’ll hurt like hell, so he opted to kick it upward instead. Just like the football practice but gentler, avoiding the lenses, then bouncing on his knee just as he would a soccer ball, Yoichi immediately grabs it with both hands as it floats.
“You’re amazing!” A purple-haired boy yelled as he ran up to them. His eyes sparkling and mouth grinning widely as he grabs Michael’s wrists.
“Where did you learn to move like that? Which action movie? Was it Kungfu style?!”
“Who the hell are you?!” Annoyed, Michael wriggles free from his grip.
“Where are my manners? Let me introduce myself properly.” The boy clears his throat and then bows politely. “My name is Mikage Reo, I’m the heir to the Mikage family. Pleased to make your acquaintance.”
“That’s a weird way of talking. You’re a rich kid?” Michael squinted his eyes, giving him a somewhat scrutinizing look.
“Is this camera yours?” Yoichi asked as he showed the device to Reo.
“That’s correct,” Reo said, accepting the item. “I’m glad, it looks like it's not busted. Well, even if it did, I can just buy a new one right away.” He shrugs nonchalantly.
“Young master, don’t go around running so fast. You could end up getting hurt.” A stocky old lady approached them as she reprimanded Reo. Her face reminded Michael of an old witch in a fairy tale book.
“You’re way too worried, Ba-ya. I’m fine.” Reo huffed, then turned toward the two. “What’s your guy’s name?”
“I’m Michael and this is my little brother Yoichi,” Michael said while picking his nose with a bored look, while Yoichi cheerfully said. “Nice to meet you.”
“Moreover, I can’t help but be impressed by your skill. Let’s become friends!” Reo enthusiastically tried to grab Michael’s hand again, only to be smacked away.
“Stop touching me or I’ll put bogger on you!” Threatening the blonde, but Reo was unfazed by his threat, and said. “Why don’t you two come by my house? I got nothing to do anyway.” Reo eagerly invites them.
“But, we were on a family outing today, so we can’t come with you.” Yoichi shook his head.
“So what? I bet my house will be more interesting!” Reo bragged. “I have a personal playground almost as big as an amusement park. Also during our stay, my daddy hired the best chef in Italy to cook our food so it’ll taste better than anything you've ever found in town. Our villa has a built-in movie theater, and you can watch any movie you want. We have countless in our library! Also, you can have snacks as much as you want! I have the best cocoa imported from Belgium, macarons from France, and if it's still not up to your liking, I can ask my patissier to make us some of the best desserts from all around the world!”
After the long speech, Reo tried to catch his breath. But even all that flaunting doesn’t seem to impress Michael and Yoichi.
“The answer is still no, Reo,” Yoichi said truthfully. “I don’t need all those things, I just want to spend time with my family.”
“B-but…” Reo tries to argue. He can’t believe his friendship plan failed.
“You don’t get it, don’t you? Some things can’t be bought with money.” Michael said, Try his best to imitate Noa’s stern tone.
“You just repeat what Papa told you.” Yoichi pointed out.
“Shut it!” Michael snapped at him, embarrassed to acknowledge it’s good advice.
Their rejection left Reo at a loss for words. In all his life, Reo never once stood out to anyone. Nobody ever rejects his proposal; all the kids are always happily accepting his offer and do everything to gain his attention. He can’t fathom why these two kids are different.
“Michael, Yoichi, it's time to go.” They heard Ego yell from a distance.
“Coming!” Yoichi answers and then turns to Reo. “Well, that’s nice meeting you. We’ll have to go now, bye-bye!” He said, waving as he turned around and ran toward his dads.
“See ya,” Michael said, gave him a small curt nod, then followed Yoichi.
Reo looks slightly down when they run back to their parents, thinking he is going to spend another boring day with only Ba-ya as a companion.
“Then, if that's the case, why doesn’t the young master come along with them?” Ba-ya said, suddenly.
“Huh?” Reo blinks confusedly.
“We can ask their parents to let you tag along for a while. Young master wants to spend more time with his sibling, is that correct?”
Reo turns quiet, but nodding, and that’s what it takes for Ba-ya to approach the family.
“Excuse me, I believe my young master Mikage Reo here has taken a liking to your children. Mayhap you allow us to come along with you for a short while, he wanted to hang out with them a little bit longer.”
“Mikage? The same one that owns Mikage corporation?”
“Who is that?” Noa seems completely clueless; the name doesn’t ring a bell to him.
“One of the richest families in Japan. The founder of Mikage corporation.” Ego explained, then turned to Ba-ya. “That’s quite an odd request if I have to admit.”
But Yoichi tugs on his shirt with an excited look, saying. “Otou-san, can Reo come with us? Please?”
“He is a weird kid, but an interesting one.” Michael decides to support Yoichi, also looking at Ego.
“I’m not the one you should ask for,” Ego said, glancing at Noa.
“Well, if the kids want it,” Noa said, he had no reason to refuse.
Their last destination for the day is the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, located at the heart of Madrid. It was the destination the entire family was looking forward to from the start.
Especially Michael and Yoichi, who had never stepped into the stadium before. They won’t stop chattering about it.
The huge building is wrapped in a sleek metallic skin that gives the structure a look somewhat similar to a spaceship. The exterior steel façade can display images and color, enabling a light show tailored to match an ongoing event.
After it was redesigned to become a tourist attraction instead of a venue for football matches, it has expanded to host a shopping center, restaurants, a football museum, and other interactive zones.
“What is so special about this place?” Reo asks, not understanding why Michael and Yoichi are so pumped up about the stadium. Being as rich as he is, Reo is already pretty used to going to such venues to accompany his parents.
At the question, Michael couldn’t help but be smug as he gave Reo a brief history lesson about the stadium. The year it was built, the founder, the renovations that have been done, a list of the matches held there, and even the years and the dates.
“If you can recite all that so perfectly, why can’t you understand a simple formula I taught you?” Ego asked in a low tone, and Michael shuddered in fear.
“I-It’s completely different! I hate studying! I hate math!”'
“Mihya is actually really smart,” Yoichi said, smiling at the blonde. But Ego adds. “Only in the subject that he was interested in.”
“And what about that? Is Noa-san some sort of celebrity?” Reo asks as he points in the direction of Noa, who is already surrounded by several fans who ask for a picture and an autograph. As Reo is not yet a fan of soccer, he didn't have any idea who was Noa.
“You don’t know? My papa is the best striker in the world!” Yoichi exclaims brightly, giving Noa a look of admiration.
“And I’ll be the one who becomes the next Best World Striker!” Michael declared proudly.
“World's best striker is not just for show.” Ego said. “It’s a result of ceaseless, painstaking effort, unflagging self-control, honing themselves through rivalries and partnership, only then you may manage to achieve that title.”
“I don’t understand half of the thing you said, but that sounds incredibly amazing!” Reo said, eyes gleaming. “Do you think I can become one as well?”
“That’s not for me to say, however, you have to recognize that there will be lots of challenges to face ahead, and there will be others who are more talented than you aiming for the same goal.”
“That sounds difficult. I can just tell Daddy to buy them for me.” Reo huffed.
“A title and trophy that can be bought means that it is worthless,” Noa suddenly joined the conversation. Somehow, he manages to detach himself from the crowd of fans. “I’ve crawled from the bottom to win the World Cup. No amount of money or prestige makes you feel the same as winning something with your own effort.”
“That’s why I’m going to win the World Cup! That’s the thing that can’t be bought with money!” Michael chipped in.
“That’s not what I had in mind when I said that, but I suppose you have a point,” Noa said.
“Something that can’t be bought with money... I want it.” Reo suddenly said. If he can win the World Cup, if he can become the world's best striker, perhaps his parents will finally pay attention to him.
“You're welcome to try, but you won’t be able to beat me in soccer, that’s for sure!” Michael said confidently.
After the tour of the stadium. They go to the nearby plaza and get some churros dipped in Gelato from one of the dessert stands. As the sun dips below the horizon, the lamppost flickers to life, casting soft luminance that serves as the only source of lighting in the dark of the night.
As the siblings enjoy their share of ice cream, Reo is only staring at his pistachio-flavored gelato, watching it slowly melting.
He was sitting on the bench with Ba-ya standing nearby as he watched the family.
Yoichi was offering his churro dipped in stracciatella gelato, trying to make Ego taste it while the man wipes the crumbs around the boy’s mouth with a handkerchief. While Michael snatches one of Noa’s churros when he isn’t looking.
When he looks at the family, there is a sense of warmth that is missing in his own. He doesn’t even remember if his father ever picked him up. Despite living in the same mansion, his family members are very distant from each other. Reo only ever regularly interacted with the servants of the house. He spends most of his time alone, and he can even count on one hand how many times he shares meals with his parents in a year.
Both his parents are always busy. His father works, and his mother is with her socialites.
“Does daddy dislike spending time with me?” Reo asks as he looks dejected.
“Whenever we’re together, he's always talking on his phone. I never once got a chance to tell him how my day went…Compared to them, their dads make time to play with them on their day off. It’s kinda unfair…”
“You know that your father is a very busy man. You shouldn’t demand too much from him, young master.” Reminded Ba-ya. “He has already agreed to take you with him on his business trip.”
“I understand…” Reo muttered and took a bite of the churro. It tastes like ashes in his mouth.
“Forgive me for stepping out of line for saying this, I believe the master has his own way of showing his care for you.” She said, but Reo doesn’t seem to believe her words.
“How about we return to the mansion, young master? I’m sure your father must have waited for you to come home. It’s after all already past your curfew.” Ba-ya said, and Reo nods and obediently follows her as they walk toward the family to bid them goodbye.
“I must take my leave now, it’s already late,” Reo said. “Thank you for letting us come along.”
“You’re going home already?” Yoichi asks a bit disappointed, but then adds. “Let’s play soccer together the next time we meet!”
“I’ll teach you how to play soccer so you’ll be a strong rival in the future!” Michael said, waving at him.
“I’m looking forward to our next meeting,” Reo said with a somewhat sad smile as Ba-ya escorted him to the awaiting car.
After they departed, Yoichi's eyes still glued on Reo’s car until it was out of his sight.
“I think…Reo looks lonely.” He said, turning to Ego. “He seemed sad earlier, but I didn’t get a chance to ask him.”
“Perhaps he misses his family?” Michael said with a shrug.
“Maybe…” Yoichi murmured, unsure.
“We should get going, too. We're probably able to make it home early for Michael to have enough time to study for a bit.”
“Eh?! We're still studying?!” Michael whines. He was holding out hope that Ego would forget about it until tomorrow.
“Of course you are, remember it’s one week left until the test. I won’t tolerate slacking off!” Ego coldly reminded him of the deadline, and the boy ran up to Noa, yelling ‘Nooo!’
“You don’t have to push him so hard, Jin.” Noa sighs as Michael hides behind him. It seems he can’t talk his way out of studying after all.
Notes:
Since Kaiser is his favourite grandson, Ray probably try to turn him against Noa later to get back at him (lol)
I never been to Santiago Bernabeu stadium before, everything I put in the fic just bits and pieces of what I found in the internet. It looks like a spaceship from the outside. But after seeing it, I figured out where the idea of Blue Lock design comes from.
I’m craving a fanart where Isagi and Kaiser grow up together as sibling, I found one where Kaiser is adopted by Isagi family on Pixiv and Isagi calling Kaiser ‘Onii-chan’ is enough to make my entire day.
Chapter Text
“I’m really going to miss you, Yocchan! Mihya! I don’t wanna go!” Noa whines as he tightened his arms around both Michael and Yoichi. The family is sending him off in front of the mansion as he going to the airport.
“Hurry or you’re going to miss your plane.” Ego said reminding him but Noa ignored it. “I’m not going to be able to attend your first day in school, Mihya!”
“Don’t worry, we’re going to send a video.” Michael said, patting him on the head.
“Maybe I can ask to delay my departure. At least long enough for me to attend Michael’s first day.”
“You’re going to pay a load of compensation to BM. Just get going already.” Michael’s first day of school happened to be on the day of Noa first match as Bastard München’s member and he’s already subbed in starter line.
“Don’t be sad Papa, we’re going to see each other again at Christmas.” Yoichi said, reassuring him and returning his hug. Noa always comes back home to celebrate Christmas along with Michael’s birthday every year. But he still have to wait for five months for that!
Luckily Noa, Ego and Yoichi birthday happened to be aligned and only a day apart from one another so they often celebrate all three of their birthdays on Yoichi’s –Which happens to be on April fool–
During the first time they celebrate Michael’s birthday. Noa decided to give them a surprise and kept a secret from the family that he’s going to come home dressed like Santa Claus. It ended with disaster when Yoichi accidentally spotted him as he arranged box of presents underneath Christmas tree and didn’t recognize Noa in strange outfit, start crying, alerting Ego that proceeds to calling the cops reporting for break-in. They ended up spends the Christmas eve in the police station to resolve the misunderstanding.
After that, Noa never planned any surprise visit anymore and always informing his family before coming home to avoid another incident.
Over the years Noa has missed a lot of moments his children growing up because he have to be away during seasonal games. Michael’s first day of school is now added to the list.
“I’m more concerned for the exam.” Ego sighs. It’s in four more days and he knows Michael has been doing his best this past two weeks but his result is still unsatisfactory (For Ego standard)
Ego glanced sharply at Michael that flinched under his steel gaze. “Let’s hope he passes and doesn’t have to wait another year.”
Just an hour after Noa left, someone ringing a doorbell. Ego sighs when he opened the door and find Snuffy on the other side.
“If you’re looking for Noel. He already on the plane.” The bespectacled man said, not even bother to allow him inside. “Now, if you excuse me, I’m very busy today so I don’t have time to entertain you, please leave.”
Snuffy grabs the door’s edge before Ego closing it. “Wait! Wait! I was looking for you actually!”
“I want to asks for a favor…” He said awkwardly as he pushes Lorenzo inside.
“Good afternoon, coach!” The boy greeting him warmly, holding straps of a big backpack hanging on his back.
“What’s the meaning of this?” Ego squinted his eyes suspiciously.
“You were tutoring Michael for the exam right? I’m not very good at academic stuff, so while you at it can you please tutor my Lorenzo as well? please?”
“Rejected.” Ego answer come immediately. He already had his hand full with Michael, he don’t think he can tutor another kid.
“He doesn’t need to do good at least help him passing the exam, that’s all I ask! And I will indebted to you for life!” After saying that, Snuffy immediately bolted to his car and drive away before Ego has a chance to refuse.
He has no choice but to let the kid inside. He is not as cold as leaving child standing on his doorstep.
“Don!” Yoichi immediately jumps to welcome him when he sees Lorenzo enters the living room.
“Yocchan! I come to play!” Lorenzo said, waving enthusiastically.
“You’re here to study.” Ego reminded him as he gestured him toward the library where Michael already sitting in the desk with several stack of books.
He was doodling on one of the picture in history text book but promptly stopped when he spot Ego enters with Lorenzo.
“Lorenzo going to join us to study for the exam.” Ego informed him as the other boy taking seat next to Michael.
“Let’s start by doing simple equation.” Ego said handing Lorenzo and sheet of paper with set of questions to answer.
“I’m done!”
That was usually quick “Let me review the answers.” Ego took the paper from Lorenzo.
As Ego scrutinize Lorenzo’s answers. The problem becomes clear. He turned slowly at the boy and asks in disbelief. “You…You don’t know how to count?”
“Papi said that I only ever need to be good at kicking ball to make a living!” Lorenzo flashing him a wide grin proudly.
So this is why Snuffy gave up and pushing him to me! Ego grimaced, pinching his glabella as he take a deep sigh. This is pose for another challenge for him.
“Is it not good?” Lorenzo seems a bit down seeing his reaction.
“I guess that’s true to some extent, but it’s important to at least learn the basic academic ability. Otherwise, people will screw you over once you grow up.”
The doorbell ringing again.
“Another guest?!”
“I’ll open the door!” Yoichi yelled and racing to the entrance. His face brightened when he saw the familiar purple-haired boy on the other side.
“As promise, I’ve come to play Yocchan!” Reo exclaimed cheerfully.
“Reo!”
In just a glance, Ba-ya already understand the situation and proceed to says. “I’ll keep on watch of the younger kids so you can tutor the older ones.”
After all, it was Mikage Reo selfishness that comes to visit without appointment.
“Thank you, Ba-ya.” Ego nods appreciatively at the old woman
“Is anyone home?” Lavinho peeked from the outside just as Reo and Ba-ya enters the mansion.
“Whoa, now uncle Lavinho comes to visit as well!” Yoichi runs up to him excitedly.
“Why did we have so many visitors, today?!” Ego is seething now.
“And who is that?” He pointed at a stranger female that with Lavinho.
“My date for the day.” Lavinho admits, pulling his sunglasses up.
“My name is Bachira Yuu, pleased to meet you.” She bowed slightly and smile politely. “Lavinho-san said that you were good with kids Ego-san. I was hoping you can watch over my son, Meguru for a short time?” She gestured at the small brunette with bob-cut that taking hesitant steps past the doorstep.
“What kind of lies did you feed her?” He glared at Lavinho.
“C’mon, you has two kids and coaching more than dozen every week, you should be able to handle another one. I’ll owe you forever if you do!” Lavinho begged, clasp his hands together above his head.
“We will pick him up in the evening.” Yuu said then turned at her son. “Now, be good and listen to him, Megu.”
The brunette doesn’t seem happy to be left in a care of a total stranger but didn’t raise an objection to his mother’s decision. He quietly nods while clutching a dolphin plushie that Lavinho gave him.
The kid still watching them even after his mother and Lavinho got in the car and left.
“Can I ask you a favor to watch another one?” Ego said tiredly at Ba-ya that stands next to him.
“Leave him to me.” The old butler nods.
“So your name is Meguru? Can I call you Megu?” Yoichi asks, walks up to Bachira kid and stretching his hand offering a handshake to the boy. “My name Yoichi, you can call me Yocchan. Nice to meet you.”
“This is my friend, Reo.” He pointed at Reo.
“That one is my brother, Mihya and that is one of our teammates, Don.” Yoichi said as they walk past the library. “But we can’t enter there right now because they’re studying so we have to keep quiet.” Yoichi place a finger over his lips, making ‘shh’ sound.
“Let’s have a tour around my house!” Yoichi said as he grabs both Reo and Bachira’s hands.
“Your house is so huge! This is the biggest house I ever been to!” Bachira gaped in awe.
Reo however look much less impressed. “Hmm, it’s bigger than my Penthouse in Berlin but smaller than my summer house in Hawaii.”
‘This place belongs to my Grandpa but he gave it for us. Before this, we live in apartments and often have to move from place to place because of Papa’s job.” Yoichi explained as they went from room to room.
He showed them the living room, the kitchen, the basement, his and Michael’s room, where a giant poster of Noel Noa cover the wall. Noa himself that putting it there, as a way to reminded them of him during his time away in Bastard München, Yoichi was ecstatic but Michael much less enthusiastic having to see Noa’s face on the poster every day when he’s woke up. Then finally, they arrived at the last room at the end of the corridor.
“This is Papa’s trophy room. He got so many that we need entire room to put all of them.” The room used to be Ray Dark’s study but since the family moved in, it has been remodeled into Noa’s trophies storage. It contains all the trophies he won from various matches dated from the match that shoot his career.
Reo halted his step, directed his attention at large the picture hanged in the wall. “Is that a World Cup trophy?” The picture of Noel Noa holding the World Cup trophy his team has won. It was taken shortly after his team won the finalist.
“Yeah, Papa told us since the goal he made that decided their victory, he was the first one of the team that gets to hold the trophy!”
“I don’t really get it… Is your daddy that amazing Yocchan?” Bachira tilted his head giving Yoichi a questioning glance.
Yoichi smirking smugly. “He is the world best striker after all!” He turns back at Bachira. “Have you ever play soccer” The boy shakes his head.
“Then let’s play together! Reo wants to try too, so let’s head to the backyard!” Yoichi suggest as he bolted out of the room with the two followed behind him. Ba-ya tailing behind them, making sure they won’t accidentally trip.
The backyard of the mansion is refurbished into a football pitch, smaller than the ones used in school match but enough to serve as practice field.
Even with his limited knowledge and vocabulary, Yoichi manages to teach the basic of soccer to Bachira and Reo, they quickly learns how to kick and dribble a ball. Although since it was their first attempts it was choppy, clumsy and uncoordinated. Nonetheless, the three of them having fun, passing the ball around each other.
Back in the library
“If you didn’t think studying is important, why do you try so hard to enter Re Al academy?” Ego asks Lorenzo that in the middle of working on a question sheet.
“Because if I didn’t pass, I can’t stay in the team. Besides, I want to go to school also I want to spend more time with Mihya and Yocchan.”
Lorenzo made quite a progress within just few hours, he already show sign of improvement. His motivation to go to school is bigger than Michael. Ego knew one of the main reason why Snuffy pushing for Lorenzo to attend Re-Al academy was because only those that goes to their school can stay in the dorm. He knows Snuffy taken a contract and will be playing for Uber next year and it would be extremely difficult to raise a child by himself in that situation.
“Papi also said that I won’t find a better coach than you, so I have to give my best to enter the academy. After all, I want to continue play soccer so I can become a pro one day!”
It seems everyone putting more and more expectation on him.
Michael flip the page of the book drowsily, it doesn’t seems that he can continue focus on studying anymore. His eyelids heavy, threatening to close every few minutes.
“How about we take a little break? We’ll continue later.” Ego decided that rest is also important. He can’t go pushing the boy to the brink.
Hearing that both boys expression suddenly brightened. They immediately leaves the table and all the boring books and yells happily as they exited the library in a heartbeat.
“What should we do first Mihya?” Lorenzo asks excited as they walks the mansion hallway.
“Since we’re sitting for so long, let’s play one match!” A challenge to 1V1.
“You’re on!”
They joined Yoichi and the others in the pitch and decide to split into two team. The member of the team is decided with Rock-Paper-Scissor game. Since there are five of them, Reo decides to become the referee while Michael ended up with Bachira in the team and Lorenzo with Yoichi.
As the friendly match goes, Yoichi stumbled and fell as he pass the ball to Lorenzo. Seeing Yoichi falls and start crying, Michael doesn’t bother to chase after Lorenzo that headed to the goal and immediately rushes to his brother’s side, helping him standing up.
“Good, look like you didn’t scrape your knees.” Michael said as he checked on Yoichi, brushing off dust and dirt from the toddler’s clothes then patting him on the head.
“You’re way too overprotective of Yocchan. If you do that in a real match, our team going to lose.” Lorenzo said, approaching the sibling after he scores a goal.
“It’s fine, we’re not going to lose as long as I’m in the team. I will steal back our points and win the match!” Michael said, stole the ball from right beneath Lorenzo’s feet and run toward the opponent goal.
“Wait! That’s cheating, I’m not ready yet!” Protested Lorenzo as the blond scores a goal.
“It’s your fault for not paying attention.” Michael stuck his tongue at him.
The match resumes until Ba-ya called for them to take a break after she finished preparing some snacks and hot cocoa for them.
Afterwards, Ego called in Michael and Lorenzo to resume their study session while the younger kids went and taking turn playing video games until it was time for them to go home.
Bachira was the first one to leave as Lavinho and his mother planning to take him to eating out.
Reo and Ba-ya is the next one to leave. Director Mikage has instructed Ba-ya to prepared them some gift. Thanking the family for their hospitality to indulging the young master’s whims. Turns out, that was their last day in Italy and have to fly back home to Japan tomorrow.
“Daddy said that I can attend Re-Al academy once I turn six. I’m going to try hard and learn everything I can about soccer back home. let’s play another match when we meet again!” Reo told the sibling before leaving.
Snuffy was the last one to show up at ten P.M. to picks up Lorenzo.
After sending the last kid off, Ego finally can relax. Laying down in a couch to take a bit of rest after hectic day.
Yoichi has long gone to sleep, curled up in his bed peacefully after a long day having fun with so many guests.
“Has Lorenzo gone home?” Michael asked, he was taking a bath when Lorenzo left. “I didn’t bid him a goodbye yet.” His cheek flushed and hair still damp and the droplet trickling down to the towel hanging around his shoulder.
“He’ll come again tomorrow for another study session.” Ego said. He feel slightly bad for the kid and decide to help him pass the exam. “Make sure to dry your hair properly before going to bed or you’ll catch a cold.” He reminded him and Michael answers with ‘yeah, yeah’
Ego thought that he’s going to return to bedroom but Michael just stand there, slightly fidgeting. He watches him from his peripheral vision for few seconds then ask, “What is it?”
“Umm…Vater…I’m going to do my best to pass the test and goes to school with everyone! After all Lorenzo has trying his best too so I won’t lose either!” He declared sounded convicted.
“That’s good, I’m glad you found your resolution at least.” Ego smiled, – not his usual wicked smirk or eerie smile whenever he analyze exciting soccer match (Or a psychological thriller movie)– but a genuine fond smile as he pats Michael on the head.
“Th-that’s all! I’m going to bed now!” Utterly embarrassed, Michael immediately ran to his shared room.
Ego hoped with that new-founded determination, Michael will be more motivated to study tomorrow.
---------- Omake----------
Homesick
The room Noa got is a small studio flat. A combined living/bedroom area including kitchen and bathroom. It’s small and cramped but enough space for one person to live comfortably. Unlike in younger days where he stays in a dorm with room shared with several member of his team that more similar to a boarding school or college dorm.
He just got back after the long training session to get acquainted with his new team. As far as he can see, they were within his expectation. No more, no less, pretty standard for a team of professional footballer. None of them have an ability that standing out but none also possess glaring weaknesses.
Now, after the humdrum of monotone routine, he returned to his flat. He unlocked the door and opening the door with slight creak. He is met with silence in the dark room that make his skin crawl with uneasiness.
He is far too used having come home to a brightly lit house with sounds of laughter of Michael and Yoichi as the kids welcomed him on the entrance. Filling him on what exciting thing happened to them that day or what dinner they going to have.
The smell of the warm meals wafting in the air instead of dusty carboard boxes that left lying there after he finished unpacking his stuff.
Back home, Noa always tried to keep the place tidy and spotless if he can. He also taught Michael and Yoichi to clean up after themselves and not leaving their toys or comic books scattered around the room. But here? he couldn’t care less. He only ever used the room for sleeping anyway.
He dropped the sport bag carelessly on the floor as he make his way to the bed. The morning practice starts early tomorrow, he need to be up at five so he has to get an adequate sleep.
That what he should do, but instead Noa found his fingers reaching for his smartphone. It’s a half past eleven P.M. now, almost midnight. The kids probably already long slept by now, but Ego usually still up until about two or three A.M. at least he can have a brief chat with him to make sure everything alright. He remembers today is the day of entrance exam (Because Michael never shut up about it) he wonders if the kid doing alright.
Homesick is the word that Noa used to unable to comprehend. When he first recruited to a team and has to live in a dorm, lots of his peer often complaining about it. They misses their hometown, their favorite food, their old school and friends, their parents and siblings. Noa comes from the slum, the only property he left behind there is a dingy apartment room infested with rats and cockroaches.
He never had anyone in his life he could call a family, and only ever picks up Soccer because that’s the only thing he’s good at.
He dials the number then wait for a few second before his husband picking up from the other line.
“It’s rare for you to call on this time. Both of them already asleep you know. Just call back in the morning.” Brief and concise, this is how the interaction between them always goes even after married. Neither of them are suited for sappy relationship anyway.
“No, I didn’t call to talk to the kids.” Noa admits. “How was the test goes? Did Michael doing alright?”
“Of course he did, after all I personally tutored him.” Ego said with prideful tone. He had always takes pride in his intellect. Whether in soccer or anything that he take interest in, Ego has always been the smartest person Noa knows.
“Is that so? I’m glad.” Noa lips curled into smile for the first time that week.
“Is that all? I’m going to hang up now.” Ego said but Noa quickly interject. “Eh? wait!”
“Is there anything else?” Ego asks in a similar tone of the waiter in a restaurant awaiting their order.
Is not that Noa hoping for more, after all he is the one that decided to propose to him. “I just want to say thank you.” Ego has been putting up with many of his selfish desires over the years. “I’m always been counting on you for a lot of things.”
Despite not being the one that wanting to adopt in the first place, Ego ended up taking most of the responsibility for the kids especially whenever Noa is away like this.
While Noa is sure that the kids does loves them equally but it’s obvious that they are more attached and comfortable around Ego. He was the one they interact the most and the one they can depend on anything. Noa wished that he could’ve done the same but with his career it impossible to achieve.
“Just say you’re lonely.” Well, that’s about the kind of response he expected from Ego anyway. “Besides everything is fine, you don’t need to worry, we’ll always waiting for you to come home.”
To him home now, is a place filled with laughter, along with the sounds of restless tiny footsteps running around. The scent of freshly brewed coffee, toasted bread and seasoned omelets when he wakes up. The lazy afternoon where they spend the time watching live football matches. The sight of two energetic kids welcoming him on a doorstep. Sharing their experiences for the day while having dinner. Putting the kids to bed, kissed them on forehead and putting blanket over them.
“I’m glad that I married you, Jin.” Noa said sincerely. “I’ll be home soon.”
Notes:
Kaiser’s year has all sort of interesting students: He is going to be in the same class as Loki, Lorenzo, Aiku, Iglesias and later Sae will join them too.
All generation XI are going to the same school and in the same class XDXDXDHe will have some sort of rivalry with Loki in both academic and sports (Not limited to soccer)
Also Noa going to start living in Bastard München dorm and got homesick.
Apparently kids can only participate in soccer match at around 8 years old and even then it’s a friendly match not a competitive one. But I suppose at least six ore seven years old can if they talented enough.
(Not including younger ones because that would be child endangerment)

Chapter Text
Michael's First day at school
The front yard of the Re-Al central building is filled with numerous people along with their children. It’s the day the results of the entrance exam are announced, and the participants are anxious to find out if they passed the exam.
The front row of the crowd is a sea of bunches of six-year-olds looking for their names on the list of a giant board.
Little Michael is one among them, biting his lower lip as his blue eyes scan the board carefully for his name and participant number, his tiny fist clutched on the Omamori amulet he received for good luck.
Some other kids who already found their name run back to their family to celebrate, while others are still looking at the board anxiously.
Once he spotted his name, Michael let out a breath he didn’t even realize he was holding.
He looked behind him and saw Ego holding Yoichi in his arms, standing a few steps behind him, along with other parents. “It’s there!” He yelled as he ran up to him. “My name is on the board! I passed the exam!”
“Great job. As expected of my son.” Ego said proudly –As enthusiastically as he can–and pats Michael on the head. “What do you want for dinner?” He asks as they turn around and head home.
“Salisbury steak!” Michael said immediately. “Steak!” Yoichi repeated cheerfully. They both love steak.
“With crust rusk as a side dish?” Michael beamed at the mention of his favorite dish and fervently nodded.
Michael is wearing the Re-Al Academy school uniform and is showing it to Noa on a video call. It’s his first day of school, and he gets up very early to make sure everything is ready for his first day.
“He grew up so fast, it feels like yesterday I held him for the first time.” Noa sniffed, very proud of Michael.
But Ego interrupted his heartfelt moment, saying. “The school bus is here to pick you up.” While pointing at the window, where a school bus was already parked outside the mansion gate.
“I’m going now, see you guys later!” Michael waved enthusiastically at his family as he ran to the door. He is so excited for his first day of school that he barely got any sleep last night.
As he climbed up to the bus, he spotted that Ness had already reserved a seat for him and immediately sat next to him.
After that incident on their first day, their teams are reluctant to work together with the siblings. Most refused to be grouped with him and didn’t pass a ball to Michael in a friendly match.
Luckily, he has made several friends who stick by him. Lorenzo, Loki, and Michael’s newly devoted admirer, Ness.
After a brief exchange of ‘good morning’, they discussed
The bus pulls up to the academy parking lot, right in front of the entrance of the student dorm. Several Re-Al academy students had exited the dorm by the time he and Ness got off the bus. Among them is Lorenzo, who ran up to them once he saw them.
“Morning!” He said, waving with a huge grin.
“Morning, Lorenzo.” Ness answered with a small smile while Michael nodded, saying, “Morning.”
“Who were those kids, Lorenzo, your friends?” A dark-skinned, tall, buffed dude with dreadlocks reaching his shoulder stopped in his tracks when he saw the three. He had several guys with the same uniform as him, and they looked like upperclassmen.
“Silva, these are my friends from youth camps that I told you about before. Michael and Ness.” Lorenzo is eagerly approaching his teens.
“Oh, it's just old man Noa’s kid.” The tall blonde immediately recognized Michael. “You’re the older one, Michael, right?”
“Why did you know my name? Are you a stalker?” Michael squinted his eyes suspiciously.
The teen laughed at his boldness. “That’s not it, Coach Noa never stops talking about you and your brother, that’s why I remembered.”
“I’m Leonardo Luna,” He pointed at himself. “These are my teammates and classmates.” He gestured toward the group.
“The fat one is Dada Silva.” Luna pointed at the largest one among them, to which Silva retorts with “It’s muscles, damnit!”
“The one who looks like a middle-aged man is Adam Blake.” He pointed at the one with sandy blonde hair with a beard that makes him look much older than his age. “I’m not old!” Blake protested.
“And the cotton candy hair shortie is Pablo Cablazo.” Luna pointed at the shortest one. “It’s Cavasoz!” The shortie corrected him.
While they are chattering with the middle schooler, another car pulls into the parking lot, and once it stops, the door opens, and Loki emerges from inside.
“I will be leaving for school now, mère.” He said to the person inside the car, but the figure is obscured from the outside view since the car windows are pretty dark, so they could only see a silhouette from the outside. Michael remembers Ego once mentioning that it was bulletproof glasses.
“Morning, everyone!” Loki greeted them cheerfully. Then nods politely toward the group of teens. Luna and the others excuse themselves since their first period has already started.
The first years also decided to continue their talks as they walked toward the school building.
“I’m glad we have all passed the exam!” Lorenzo said. “I still can’t believe I passed the exam. It’s all thanks to Coach Ego’s tutoring.”
“I’m so glad I’m also passed. I was so nervous when checking my name on the board.” Ness placed a hand over his chest, sighing in relief.
“Now we all can attend the school together, isn’t that great?” Loki said, smiling.
“My parents told me that you got the highest score on the entrance exam. They went and checked the result.” Ness said, sounding impressed by Loki.
“I just got lucky,” Loki said sheepishly. “In fact, I’m surprised you weren’t the one with the highest score. Both your parents are scientists, right? Didn’t your father win a Nobel Prize last year?”
“I’m not very smart compared to my siblings…” Ness said, somewhat embarrassed. Ness did mention once that his parents were against his decision to play football at first, and wanted him to pursue higher education, but finally gave in when he didn’t show as much potential as his siblings.
When they make it to the class that they are assigned to, many students have already taken their seats. Michael recognizes lots of faces there, the ones from the same youth group as him and Yoichi. The groups decide to sit next to each other at the same table.
While not all students in the Re-Al academy are recruited into the football team, every member in the youth camp is attending the academy. The school is less focused on education and focuses more on developing students’ football careers.
The only student that Michael is curious about, the redhead with turquoise eyes who sits at the table next to his. He had never seen him before.
The redhead seemed very quiet and didn’t seem very interested in anything; he barely even replied when Aiku and Iglesias, who sat next to him, tried to start a conversation.
Once the teacher comes into the room and starts the first period, and begins the roll call, Michael finds out the redhead’s name. ‘Itoshi Sae’ He wonders if he also plays soccer.
The classes went by, and it was more boring than Michael anticipated, so he ended up falling asleep during the second period and got scolded by the teacher. Afterwards, he struggled to pay attention in class, but none of the subjects really interested him until finally it was time for afternoon break.
Their recess lasted for thirty minutes, and they decided to use that short period to play soccer.
The group decides to have a short 2V2 match when Sae’s sudden arrival interrupts him.
“You guys can play soccer? Can I join in?” The redhead asks just as they are about to start the Kickoff.
“The question is, can you play it?” Michael retorts, smirking.
“I’m only interested in facing a strong player.” Sae cast a glance and scrutinized the group. “Which one of you is the strongest?”
“If you’re searching for the strongest, you’re looking at him right now.” Michael's thumb is pointing at himself with total confidence.
“How about we test it out? Let’s have a 3V3 game.” Sae said, and at the same time, Aiku and Iglesias walk onto the pitch. Seems like they were following the redhead.
Michael glances at the two; despite being in the same youth team, he never actually exchanges a word with them.
“Don’t bother with that troublemaker, Sae, or you’ll get ostracized by the other kids, too,” Aiku warned. He did choose to stay away from Michael’s group because he didn’t want to be shunned by the other. Iglesias, on the other hand, doesn’t really seem to mind that much. The kid didn’t interact much with others, with the exception of Aiku. Besides that, the scar marks on his face make him rather intimidating and hard to approach.
“I don’t care about that,” Sae said, coldly glaring at the boy with mismatched eyes. “I told you I'm only interested in a strong player.”
The match started with Loki and Lorenzo in Michael’s team, while Aiku and Iglesias were in Sae’s team. There are no goalkeepers, so the Goal is completely wide open on both sides.
The ball is on Michael’s court, and he decides to go all offense right off the bat, testing if he can break past. Before he reached the goal, however, Aiku blocked his path.
Michael knows from watching him practice that Aiku’s best ability is his strong defense, similar to Lorenzo's. When it comes to one-on-one, he can completely shut down any offensive player and block all their option. It would be difficult to break on his own, so he decides to pass to Loki, who came behind him, and the speedster proves that it’s manageable as he scores the first goal.
The next kickoff starts with the ball on Sae as he manages to pass through Michael’s block with his nutmeg. When Lorenzo tried to steal the ball, he sent a high-flying kick toward Iglesias, who jumped to catch it. Among all the kids in the camp, Iglesias has the most surreal jumping ability. He easily scores a goal for Sae’s team.
Then, before they can resume the play, the bell is already ringing, signaling that the time of recess has come to an end. Leaving them in a stalemate with a draw result of 1 – 1
“It was fun,” Sae told Michael, offering a handshake. “I want to be your friend, so let’s play again.”
Michael smirks, accepting it as he replies. “Yeah, same here.”
Yoichi entered the kindergarten.
Ever since Michael started his primary school, that requires been away from home from morning until noon. For the first time, Ego is left alone with Yoichi for a long time. And it was. Hell.
Yoichi is not used to being left alone, and with Noa in Berlin and Michael away at school, he will bug Ego every few minutes. He would bring his toys and play while Ego did his work and wouldn’t leave even when being told to.
One thing that Yoichi hated the most was being ignored.
Yoichi would trail after Ego everywhere around the house like a little duckling, even clinging to his leg, preventing him from walking straight. To the point, Ego has to lock himself in the bathroom to get a minute's break from Yoichi's constant interruption.
Back when Michael was still in the house, it was still manageable since the two were constantly playing with each other and would leave Ego to work in peace.
The last straw was when Yoichi tried to grab a cup of instant Yakisoba while Ego was pouring hot water into it, and almost got scalded by the boiling water.
Both he and Noa have reached an agreement that, despite their shared love for a noodle cup, they refrain from introducing it into the kids' diet until they are old enough. During this stage, both Michael and Yoichi still need all the nutrients to ensure they will grow healthy.
“Yoichi, starting tomorrow, you’ll be going to kindergarten.” Ego said after he got off the phone. It’s in the area, a couple of minutes from their house, and near the market plaza where they usually do their grocery shopping.
“Don’t wanna,” Yoichi answers lethargically, playing with his lobster plushie. “I wanna stay home.”
“You can’t.” Ego said. “I have work to do, and I can’t watch over you every few minutes. You also need to be more sociable with other kids.”
“If you keep being difficult, it will be hard for you to make friends.” That first day experience must be traumatizing for him. Ego is sure the reason Yoichi is still attending the practice is only because Michael is there, and Ego is the coach.
“I don't need other friends, I already got Reo and Megu!” Yoichi insists.
“They are already back in Japan; you won’t be able to see them for a while.” Ego reminded him.
“It’s fine! As long as I have Mihya, I don’t care if I don’t have any other friends!” Yoichi argued again.
“Michael can’t always spend time with you. Eventually, he would make other friends in school that he would want to hang out with, and he wouldn’t always be able to take you along.”
Michael has been going on and on about this new kid in school ever since he came home, and he wouldn’t shut up about how much he is looking forward to going to school tomorrow.
“Oh, you mean the Itoshi brother. They're going to join the youth camp at our next practice.”
“I knew they were going to recruit him!” Michael pumped his fist, looking really pleased.
“I’m done, thank you for the food,” Yoichi said glumly, pushing his plate after finishing his meal and getting off the dining table.
“Is Yoichi upset about something?” He hears Michael ask after he leaves the room.
Sure, Michael talks about their other friends too; they talked about Lorenzo, Loki, and Ness a lot, but they were all members from the same youth camp. This Sae is a total stranger to Yoichi. And he hated hearing his brother talking so fondly about him. He didn’t show the same fondness and admiration toward the others. Why is this boy different?
He wanted to get angry because it felt like Michael had found his new favorite friend, but at the same time, he didn’t want to upset Michael if he talked ill about his newfound friend.
It is always easier for Michael to make friends. Most kids are just naturally drawn to him and want to be his friends. Yoichi still feels a bit guilty for crying on the first practice; if he hadn’t, then Michael wouldn’t have gotten in a fight with the other kids.
Maybe it would be better for Michael if Yoichi weren’t around.
The next day, Ego took him to the kindergarten. When they entered the building, a kind-looking lady greeted them warmly as she showed them the way in. The receptionist was talking with a middle-aged woman with red hair, with a dark-haired boy with a greenish tint beside him. He looks about Yoichi’s age.
After assigning both boys to their classroom, Ego gave Yoichi a pat on the head and a brief goodbye, telling him to behave and listen to the teacher, and he would pick him up at three in the evening.
“You’ll be in a class with lots of friends, and we have Rin, who also just joined us today. Let’s get along, alright?” The teacher said as she guided them gently into one of the rooms with a bunch of toys and where a lot of kids their age are playing with each other.
“Come on, don’t be shy, say hello to everyone.” She gave the two boys a soft push toward the group of children.
“Yocchan!” Yoichi looked up and brightened when he spotted Charles among the group of kids.
“Charlie!” He waved as he ran up to him, excited to find someone he knew. The two have grown close, being the two youngest members of Youth Camp.
They were then given crayons and blank paper and tasked to draw whatever they wanted. Some kids are still thinking of what to draw, while some immediately get inspired to draw what’s on their mind.
“What did you draw, Charlie?” Yoichi looked at Charles on his right already begun drawing.
“Macaron! Lots and lots of ‘em! I love macaron!” The blonde said as he drew more circles with different colors.
“What did you draw, Yocchan?” He asks, peeking at Yoichi’s paper.
“Mihya and I, playing soccer.”
“You guys sure do love soccer.”
He looks at Rin, who sits on his left, breaking off his crayons one by one.
“Why didn’t you draw?” Yoichi asks as all the other kids at the table now give Rin a confused look, weirded by his odd behavior.
“I don’t like drawing,” Rin answers with an expressionless face. “I would rather play with my brother.” Yoichi understands it; given an option, he, too, would rather play soccer with Michael than be here. But drawing isn't all bad; he likes coloring stuff.
“I’m bored and thirsty,” Rin said as he got up from his chair and went toward the pantry, asking one of the caretakers for a glass of water. On his way back to his seat, Rin accidentally tripped and spilled his drink all over the table. All the other kids managed to pull their papers out of the way, but Yoichi, who sits beside Rin, didn’t react fast enough to pull his, and his half-done sketches splashed with water from Rin’s cup.
Yoichi pulls up the paper and accidentally tears the drenched part. It tore right on the part where the drawing of himself and Michael is. The half of the paper falls with a splat into the puddle below. As he watched his ruined art, Yoichi’s eyes began to well with tears.
One of the teacher rushed to their table once she heard Yoichi’s crying. After cleaning up the mess, she gave Yoichi a new sheet of paper, but he didn’t feel like drawing anymore and was sulking in the corner. He doesn’t want to play even when Charles comes up and asks him to join.
Yoichi just wanted to go home.
“I’m…I’m sorry.” Yoichi turns his head slightly and sees Rin coming up behind him. “I didn’t mean to ruin your drawing…” He seems to truly regret his action as he shows his open palm, offering Yoichi a candy.
“S’ okay.” Yoichi sniffles. “I think I wasn’t sad because of the drawing.” He said as he took the candy from Rin’s hand, accepting his apology and letting him sit beside him. “I’m just sad, my brother has just started going to school and I can’t play with him until evening…”
“I’m the same!” Rin said, turning sad as well. “My brother started attending Re-Al academy, that’s why our family moved to Italy.”
“He is going to the same school as mine. Maybe they are in the same class?”
“Yeah, maybe.” Rin shrugs. “Oh, by the way, I haven’t told you my full name. I’m Itoshi Rin.” He said to reintroduce himself.
Itoshi?
Yoichi's eyes grew wide when he heard the name. “Wait, is your brother Itoshi Sae…That SAE?!”
Notes:
Aiku and Sae actually know each other before U20 is probably the biggest plot twist in this story lol. Also, I think it's sweet that little Rin and Isagi can bond over the feeling of getting left behind as younger brothers. (Isagi getting jealous over Sae was an unexpected idea I came up with while writing this chapter XD)
