of every photo she takes, he is etched into each one. 

of him pressed against the ocean rocks, with the sun clinging to his skin, water beading and dripping off of his chin.

of him in the garage, head bent under the silver bones of a car, hair falling down his back in black waves.

of him there with that look in his eyes, light slanting over the hollows of his cheeks, dazzling her.

she points her camera just so— and with a click, a shutter, he is split between fragments of life. immortalized.

it is all she can do.

he drinks his coffee black, no milk – just two, three, four spoonfuls of sugar, steam spiraling from the bitten rim. he grips the mug in his scarred hands, eyes following as she crosses the room, a touch unsteady on her feet.

she reaches for the cup, eyes still drawn from sleep.

he shakes his head. “I don’t think you want some.”

but she’s insistent, because that’s the way she is—in part he thinks that’s why he’s hers—and he can’t keep from grinning as she chokes the rest of it down.

“holy crow- that’s disgusting, Jake.”

he just laughs.

they sit alone on the beach’s edge, faces aglow in the violet-gold fire shattering over the waters. cloaked in the night chill, his arms hold her close, the burn of cheap beer low in their throats.

the shape of their lips move clumsily together, and when she pulls away, her cheeks are bleached pink and white from the cold. gripping his hand, she tugs it forward, settling it wide upon her chest. fingers weigh on his, heavy, until he can feel the quiet pound of her heart beneath his palm. her voice sounds in his ear, breathless.

“only for you.”

she buries her small thumbs in the soil of the potted plants like she can feel the webbed roots breathing under the surface, sinks her nose into the petals of flowers like their frail scent is oxygen.

he pads barefoot over the slits in the kitchen floorboards, on the peeling porch, on the ground outside. the earth holds fast and thick to his soles, his blood-bruised knees, his skin, even when he is inside.

in time, they will find each other under the leathery limbs of an apple tree, sticky hands twisted shyly as one — just the future, for now.
