It is the summer of 1987 and two eight-year-olds are getting ready to celebrate the Fourth of July. Marissa Landrigan is excited about spending the day at her best friend's house. There are people all around, music, and even a trampoline to pass the time. Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, little Aaron Steels is also getting himself ready for the holiday. He isn't too excited to be spending it with neighbors he doesn't like but hopes they don't bug him too much. With all the fun and frills of the summer the two kids soon run into trouble when separate accidents leave them both headed to the hospital. Marissa and Aaron are living separate lives in cities across the state of Colorado and do not yet know they will eventually meet and marry. All they know is this is going to be a Fourth of July that neither of them will ever forget.
