Chapter 1: Chapter One
Chapter Text
Following the pin in his phone he eyed the cave, just under a waterfall. He perked up to a loud shout, and his feet were moving faster than his mind. Sprinting to the sound, he came to a fork in the tunnel, he looked down to his phone and took an immediate left.
“Get it off!”
Cobalt ears perked up and quickly stepped down the tunnel caves, he saw a light at the end and quickly made the scene. Shadow hunched over with a gaudy looking cuff to his wrist, there was another half that was opened. Rouge stood next to the chest thrown open and he watched her pull out a scroll. Her eyes narrowed to him as she quickly hid the paper in her cleavage.
“Oh Sonic, thank goodness you're here. Shadow needs your help.” She pleaded. Completely not like her whatsoever.
Shadow growled looking up at him, the unclasped cuff between his feet and the magnet pull of the stone between golden metal bounced with his strength.
“I do not need his help.” Shadow growled.
The pull forced him onto the floor, he tumbled square on his nose. Earning a snicker to the two, and a robotic laugh behind them.
“Alright, alright, lemme see Shadow.” Sonic rolled his shoulders and stepped closer.
“Back off!” Shadow rolled back up onto his feet, cuff dangling off his wrist.
“Shadow let the poor thing help, he came all this way.” Rouge smirked.
“Which I didn’t ask for-”
In the split second Shadow tore his gaze from the blue hedgehog, he was there. In a blink, Sonic’s hand took the cuff which Shadow yanked away. The stone between the cuffs flashed a blue color and the second cuff clattered to the floor. They stared at it for a moment.
“What did you do?” Shadow asked.
“I donno-” as he was going to reach for it, Shadow kicked it away. Thus starting the chase, Shadow kicked away the cuff before Sonic could reach it. Rouge had taken her place on Omega’s shoulder, patting his head watching the two chase each other. Kicking the cuff across the room and Sonic was on his tail, with an irritated sigh Sonic followed the skidding cuff. As he was about to reach it he grabbed Shadow’s quills and pulled him back, knocking the other down, Shadow gripped his ankle and pulled him back.
“You're chasing something without knowing what it could do!” Shadow growled.
“Chasing?” Sonic rumbled a laugh, holding the gold cuff in his hand, “I already got it.”
‘User accepted’
“Huh?”
The stone on Shadow’s wrist started to buzz and there was a loud click. Sonic watched the cuff slip from his hand clamp itself shut over his wrist. The two got up, feeling the pull of the cuffs back to the stone. Pulling themselves away from the stone, digging their heels into the rock beneath them. Golden wrapped wrists drawn to the stone hovering in the room. Until Shadow slipped, rolling his ankle on a rock and his push back against the stone had him ricochet to the floor and zip across the room. Crashing into Sonic and they tumbled into limbs and into the wall.
Rouge perked up from looking at her glove hearing the groan of the two. She fluttered to the floor as the dust settled, Shadow had been pinned down to Sonic lying on top of him. Arm over his head and leg between his shoulder and arm. Shadow’s arm over Sonic’s back as his leg hooked into the back of Sonic’s knee.
“Are you both alright?” her concern was as dry as she hoped it would be.
“Ow.” Sonic grumbled, trying to get up, slipping on a puddle of water his chin knocked into Shadow’s side. Earning a deep groan from the other.
“Get- off.” Shadow hissed.
Sonic attempted again, but his eyes narrowed to the cuff locked onto both of their wrists.
“Oh no.” Sonic swallowed.
“What is it now?” Shadow sat up rolling Sonic off him, then his eyes fell to the cuffs. Sonic and Shadow tried to pull away but the pull only rejoined their wrists together. Shadow growled turning to Rouge with a small smirk on her lips, there was no hint of concern in her eyes. As if this had been planned.
“You!” Shadow got up, ignoring Sonic’s protests. He snarled in her face but she was immune to his sneering glare.
“Little ol me? What could I have done, you seemed to have done this to yourself.” She hummed.
“I know you told him where we were, you-”
“She told me you needed help Shadow, at least she knows who to call when there is help that is needed.” Sonic huffed, “Which means she would know how to get it off.”
“Perhaps, but I do enjoy watching Shadow squirm.” Rouge scrunching her nose at him with a hum on her lips.
‘Users accepted, base will terminate’
They turned to the cuffs, a panel opened revealing five gems that shined in different colors. Purple, green, blue, yellow, and pink. Then a soft beeping in the distance tore their attention to the chest, and the cave began to rumble.
“We should run. That’s a good idea.” Sonic piped in.
Shadow already bolted off, Sonic trying to keep in step with him. Stumbling over his smooth glide, making it harder for Sonic to mimic. Compared to his erratic and quick steps, he tugged on Shadow making him skid to a stop. Sonic gave him a hard look holding out his hand.
“We are going to have to work together, just. Until we can make it out of here.” Sonic huffed, he gave a grabby motion to his hand.
“We don’t have time for this!”
“The more you bitch and moan about it the longer we stand here, now give me your hand.”
Shadow let out a long irritated sigh taking his hand, Sonic perked up to this. There was a soft click in the distance and they were off again. Shadow gliding along Sonic’s erratic running, two in two working together for a moment as they made it out of the cave. The explosion hit as they made it out, knocking them into the river.
Sonic bobbed up with frantic splashing, Shadow gasped as he came up to the surface. Ruby eyes narrowed to Sonic whaling and crying, splashing about, kicking up water.
“Sonic, stand up.” Shadow sighed.
He suddenly stopped, as he stood the water came to his chin. He gave a chuckle turning to Shadow, who only glared at him in return. But in the moonlight, water dripping off his quills and his brow, he ran a hand over his top quills brushing the water away. Shadow did look very beautiful. He quickly shook himself off that thought and looked back to the water. Shadow grumbled tugging him out of the water and helped him out. Sonic clung to Shadow looking down to it’s cool depths. Shadow pressed a hand to his face and shoved him off.
“But Shadow I’m cold!” Sonic whined.
“I don’t care.” Shadow huffed. There was a beat of silence before Sonic shook himself off, Shadow growled turning to him. He was all fluffed up and quills standing on end. He scoffed a laugh turning away. Sonic beamed to that.
“Did I make you laugh? Yea? You think I’m funny?” Sonic grinned.
Shadow eyed him for a moment, “We should figure out how to get these off.”
He raised their conjoined wrists, having Sonic’s quills lay back to their original state.
“Oh! Tails might be able to help, since whatever you did to Rouge upset her.” Sonic hummed, taking their lead to his house.
“I didn’t do anything.” Shadow growled.
“Sure, sure, whatever you say.” Sonic gave him his grabby hand again, Shadow knew he was going to regret taking his hand the first time.
“We could walk, have all the eyes on us as we walk through the city.” Sonic hummed leaning against Shadow’s shoulder. Shadow took his hand and pushed him off with his free hand.
Chapter 2: Chapter Two
Chapter Text
Heading into the house they had completely dried off from the run there, Sonic poked his head in the door. Not eyeing anyone roaming around in the living room he sighed in relief. He led Shadow inside, who looked around their surprisingly tidy home, pictures of him and Tails on the wall. Followed by Knuckles on Angel Island, he spotted Rouge in the background. But his eyes fell to a photo of the two of them sitting on the hall table, of course it was one where Shadow was glaring at the camera, and Sonic holding his large joyful smile.
Sonic gave an awkward laugh putting the photo down and continuing the path to the hall. Shadow did put it back up before he brushed by it. Pushing open the garage door, he poked his head into Tails and Knuckles. Knuckles bobbed his head crossing his arms, Tails had pinned his ears back rubbing his arm. Heavily deep in conversation, which Tails was uncomfortable to be apart of.
“I’m glad he ran off, just before that-”
“Hey guys.” They turned to Sonic holding a big cheesy grin. Giving a slight wave with his unshackled hand.
“Oh! Sonic your back!” Tails held an awkward smile.
“Could you help us with something?” Sonic hummed.
“Us?” Knuckles asked.
He and Shadow stepped into the garage, hands still together as he showed off the golden cuffs. Knuckles and Tails approached, releasing their grip on each other. Tails plucked at the stone and tried to pull at it. But it bounced back into place, hovering between their wrists, he gave a skeptical look and looked at the gems on the insides of their wrists.
“I haven’t seen anything like this.” Tails scratched his head, “It looks pretty old, Knuckles do you have any idea?”
Violet eyes admired the golden cuffs, wedging his hands between the stones and tried to push their hands apart. He hissed, retracting his hands away as they snapped back to the stone. He hummed, taking both of their hands in his own and rotated, watching the stone follow the attraction to each of the golden cuffs.
“I haven’t seen one with my eyes, but. I know what this is, but the question is- do you?” Knuckles asked.
“Thats why we are here bud, Rouge told-”
“Oh you should have led with that.” Knuckles laughed, “Welp, where's the paper. I can translate it.”
“Paper?” Shadow asked.
“Instructions?” Knuckles cocked his head. Sonic and Shadow looked to each other then back to Knuckles, he barked a laugh and rubbed his chin.
“Well, either that will explode once the last gem dulls, it’s a truth bonding artifact, well, there's endless possibilities. The Echidia’s used these back in the day, I'm surprised one still exists.”
“You can’t tell what it is?” Shadow grumbled.
“Hey- when your tribe is practically gone, there aren't really many mobians I can go to for help.” Knuckles huffed.
“Rouge had a piece of paper, well a scroll.” Sonic hummed. Shadow growled slowly, turning his head to him.
“And you didn’t mention this before?!” Shadow snapped.
“I just remembered, with the cave exploding I didn’t think it was relevant.”
“So, Shadow, how did you come across it?” Tails asked. Shadow putting a hand to his hip as his glare not tearing from Sonic.
“Rouge said we had a mission to go on, but now I’m starting to think she had an ulterior motive.” Shadow sneered.
“I will fetch the paper. In the meantime, get comfortable.” Knuckles brushed past them, patting Sonic on the shoulder he gave a smirk and left. Sonic groaned, putting his head in his hands with Shadow’s wrist following.
“He’s going to take forever!” He whined.
“What do you mean?” Shadow asked.
“You haven't hung out with Rouge and Knuckles before?” Sonic shot him a look from the palm of his hand, and Shadow’s wrist.
“I can’t say that I have.”
“Goes like this ya see,” Sonic leaned against Shadow’s shoulder, who glared at the contact.
“When Knuckles and Rouge ‘hang out’” he air quoted, “It’s not really hanging out, it's intimate- anyway you get the picture. But, Knuckles is asking for something so she’s going to make him grovel before he gets it.”
“And if Rouge asked something of him?” Shadow asked, shrugging Sonic off him.
“He’d burn the world for her to have it.” Sonic huffed.
Shadow pressed his lips in a line, he could admit defeat and get the paper from Rouge himself. But that would mean admitting that, even in front of Sonic, and her. They’d drag him through the dirt with that for the rest of their lives. He wasn’t willing to give up the fight that quickly. Shadow would rather sever his own hand to be freed of that humiliation.
“Well it is getting pretty late.” Tails sighed, “Lets hope Knuckles gets the instructions by tomorrow.”
“He better if he knows what's good for him.” Shadow sneered.
“Fresh eyes on this would be best too.” Sonic nodded.
Tails nodded in agreement, Shadow and Sonic left the garage and made their way to the kitchen. Sonic had a bit of panic on his face, lip between his teeth as he stood in the kitchen. Shadow eyed him as his quills started to flare, whatever Sonic was thinking about was starting to have him spiral. Shadow glanced at their hands, seeing his hand balled in a fist, he slipped his hand into his palm earning his emerald gaze.
“Don’t panic.” Shadow spoke, “We’ve been in worse situations.”
“I-” Sonic sighed, letting the reassurance wash over him, “You're right, we can do this.”
They nodded as Sonic led them up into the living room, eyeing the picture that was put back up. He led them upstairs to his room, Shadow glanced around to the different posters up, laundry sprawled around. Suddenly he was dragged across the room to his bed, Sonic gave an awkward chuckle throwing something across the room. Which slammed against the wall and crumpled behind his laundry basket. Shadow eyed the item’s location but didn’t see what it was.
“Ignore that.” Sonic cleared his throat.
“I don’t think I will.” Shadow smirked, tugging at their bond Sonic tugged back.
“Shadow come on, you have your skeletons in your closet so do I.” Sonic whined.
Ruby eyes kept to him for a moment, but his attention was brought to the green feathers. There weren't many but a few scattered about in his room, there was a flash of irritation on Shadow’s face. Anger bubbled in the bottom of his stomach knowing he wasn’t the only other Sonic had brought home. To share a bed with…
“You should call your stupid boyfriend.” Shadow scoffed, trying to brush off his anger.
“I don’t want to talk to him right now.” Sonic huffed sitting on the bed.
“Is that idiot stirring up stupid shit again?” Shadow hummed while sitting with him. Sonic pulled out his phone with a frown on his lips. He glanced at Shadow with a bit of distaste, then back to his phone unlocking it.
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
Shadow accepted that answer, glancing at his phone for a moment. Sonic had paragraphs that he sent to- he assumed his stupid boyfriend. He turned his head away as he let Sonic borrow his hand to send a text. After a moment Sonic tossed his phone to the nightstand and sighed running a hand through his quills.
“Do you ever regret anything?” Sonic asked out of the blue.
“Depends, If you're talking about-” he raised their wrists, “Then no. I’ve been trapped in tighter space with you. I’d rather this than the cage Eggman put us in once.”
Sonic smiled at the memory, a hacked text message from Rouge and Tails, saying Sonic and Shadow were in trouble. The two of them made the scene trying to help the other, only to be shoved into this itty bitty cage. Sonic curled into Shadow as Shadow assessed how to get them out. Which ended with them breaking the cage and escaping anyway. But, it was a new ground they had come across of- they’d come to each other in need. Sonic cherished that moment a little too fondly.
He saw Sonic crack a chuckle, “It could be worse.”
“It could be worse,” he nodded.
Sonic let out a yawn as he kicked off his shoes, “I’d say I hope you don’t mind sleeping in the same bed but, you're gonna have to.”
Shadow sighed as he flopped onto the opposite side of him, Sonic shut off the light beside his bed. Curling around an extra pillow he looked to Shadow, who already had shut his eyes. He had his hands folded on his chest, and Sonic’s hand brushing against his side. Emerald eyes fluttered shut after a moment, falling asleep to the soothing sounds to Shadow’s breath.
Chapter 3: Chapter Three
Chapter Text
There was a loud bang having them both groan and sit up, the overhead light turned on. Sonic gave a grumble rubbing his eyes, he glanced at Shadow who tried to blink away the light. Quills flared either because of bedhead- or the rude awakening.
“So this is why you're too busy to see me, hm?”
His attention was brought to the vibrant green hawk in the doorway. Sonic groaned, throwing his head back against his pillow, Shadow now awake was glaring at him. He panted heavily in the doorway flared with agitation.
“You're a cheating son of a bitch!” Jet squawked.
“It’s not like that.” Shadow growled, he lifted their conjoined hands to him, “We are literally quite stuck together.”
“I’m not talking to you.” He snapped, Sonic sat up again with a deep frown.
“Don’t talk to him like that!” Sonic snapped back, “And we are stuck together.”
Jet growled, stepping into the room, “Oh and I’m supposed to believe that. Right, anything that has to do with Shadow you-”
Sonic slapped a hand over his mouth, Shadow had been dragged across the bed. He eyed Sonic who held a dangerous green glare in his eyes.
“Not- another word.” Sonic hissed. Jet batted his hand away and folded his arms across his chest. They stared at each other for a moment, giving Shadow the time to readjust himself on the bed. Sitting on the corner he eyed the two glaring at each other. Understanding why Sonic didn’t want to tell Jet about this. His dangerously angry sapphire eyes snapped to Shadow.
“You did something, didn't you?” He growled.
“You really think I went out of my way to get us stuck like this.” Shadow cocked a brow to him.
“Well whenever you get yourself into trouble Sonic always comes running to your aid.”
“Jet enough!” Sonic barked. Shadow stood at this point, returning his glare with something more venomous.
“I don’t need his help, I can take care of myself.” Shadow barked.
“Sure, keep telling yourself that bud.” Jet scoffed.
“Jet just go, I don’t have the time or the energy to be arguing with you right now.”
“And when were you going to tell me you two were stuck? Hm? That he was sleeping in your bed? Hm? Or would I have to find out long after we get married hm?”
Sonic groaned, “I- Get out of my house!”
Before Jet could say anything else Shadow stepped in between them. Glaring at Jet with a dark gaze, something electrifying sparked in his glare.
“Don’t make me drag you out myself.” Shadow snarled. Jet gave an appalled gasp taking a step back, then turned on his heel out of the room and slammed the door. Shadow sighed, turning to Sonic, tapping his finger against his arm, ears pinned back and his lip twitched. Shadow sat down, yanking Sonic to sit with him.
“There’s nothing I can do right.” Sonic mumbled resting his hand on his chin.
“I wouldn’t listen to him, he’s always been. Explosive.” Shadow grumbled, Sonic turned his gaze to him.
“And that’s coming from you.” Sonic snickered.
“I didn’t know you were getting married?” Shadow cocked a brow to him. Sonic scoffed, turning away again.
“I’m not,” Sonic spoke, “It’s what he wants, it’s always about what he wants, he wants a big wedding, he wants all his friends there, he wants it broadcasted to the whole world.”
“What do you want?” Shadow asked.
“Getting sentimental on me Shads?” Sonic glanced at him.
“No,” Shadow scoffed, “But your partner should compromise with what you want. Regardless if he agrees with them or not. It’s about partnership, not a competition.”
“Careful there, you sound like you care.”
“Just because I loathe you, doesn't mean I don’t care. Especially when that squawking pigeon comes waltzing in here like he runs the place. I don’t have repercussions putting him in his place.” Shadow huffed. Sonic smirked to him.
They shared a moment, it was brief but there was an admiration for each other. Sonic stood and gestured to Shadow to follow, they headed downstairs as Tails shut the door and sighed leaning against it. He looked up to Sonic and Shadow making their way down the stairs.
“Sorry I tried to stop him.” Tails looked up to him.
“It’s okay buddy, he knows now.” Sonic sighed, “Welp anyway, let's get some breakfast.”
Stepping into the kitchen Shadow pulled out his phone from his quills. Pressing his phone to his ear, Sonic turned to him, cocking his head. He listened to the ringing, then growled as it went to voicemail.
“Rouge! You pick up the damn phone right now!” Shadow barked, then hung up. Dropping his phone on the counter, Sonic turned to him leaning against the counter.
“Yeesh- what did you do to make her so mad?” Sonic gave a sheepish grin.
“I didn’t do anything.” Shadow huffed at him.
“So she, who probably knew about this whole thing, told you about it, then told me about it. Got us locked together, taking the instructions, and now isn’t talking to you. Says that she's not mad at you.”
Tails perked up to that, his eyes narrowing to Shadow. Leaning against the opposite counter with their arms connected between them. Something clicked.
“Erm, if you will excuse me for a moment. I forgot I left something in the shop running.” Tails slowly started to back away. Emerald and ruby eyes glanced to each other then back to Tails who gave a clumsy smile backing into the door. He hurried out of the house and into the garage, locking the door he quickly ran to his tablet and video called Rouge. He sat at his desk with hands clasped tight. The phone answered to Rouge fluttering open her eyes, bare chest was covered by Knuckles arm.
“Oh, sorry sweetie. I thought you were Shadow.” She set her phone down to make herself presentable. She had put on a tank top and rolled Knuckles off her.
“If you are doing Shadow’s dirty work I’m going to hang up on you.” She growled.
“No no, they don’t know I’m calling. I- believe you know something, and I know something that maybe we can… subtly share with each other?” Tails stammered looking at his desk then back to her.
“My my, you wish to form an alliance against your blue hero himself?” Rouge hummed, placing a hand to her chest in dramatic appallment.
“Not against him, I- something is going on and I want to know.”
“Whats in it for me?” She asked, Tails flicked his ear in annoyance. It was always something with her, leverage, an eye for an eye with her. Tails sighed, scratching his head, Rouge repositioned the camera.
“I think extra eyes and ears in my little scheme would be helpful. How about you tell me what you know, I tell you what I know then we work together. Because if my assumptions are right, your blue hero can’t settle until his heart is with the one he wants the most. Hm? And Jet isn’t filling that need.”
Tails pinned his ears back, meddling with Sonic’s life especially his love life was a big bargain. He knew how miserable he was with Jet but there was something that drew him back to him. Every. Damn. Time. He knew his feelings he carried for Shadow, and the whole insecurity he held of spilling his guts to just have Shadow turn on his heel and let him bleed out. It would probably kill him.
“We aren’t going to hurt them right?” Tails asked.
“I might, but you won’t.” She scoffed, “If you want him to be happy, you're going to have to let him be uncomfortable.”
“I- What do you want me to do?” Tails nodded.
“Good, so-”
Dangling like a puppet on a string, Shadow stood beside Sonic as he flipped pancakes. Sliding them onto a plate and letting them stack tall. He poured the rest of the batter and let it sizzle on the pan. Shadow couldn’t help but watch, being quick on his feet, he was also quick with his fingers. His mind wandered of how quick his hands were, delicate and with ease. Would he touch him like that, trailing his hand down his chest and curling to his hip.
“Would you like that Shadow?”
A chill ran down his spine as his body ignited, he stared at Sonic with wide eyes. He cocked his head in confusion, seeing how quickly he got red.
“I- What did you say?” He coughed the blush away.
“How many would you like Shadow?” He asked with a raised eyebrow holding out a plate to him, “What did you think I said?”
“I didn’t hear you.” Shadow scoffed at taking the plate.
“Right...” Sonic shrugged, putting another stack on a plate, “Anyway lets go call for Tails, I hope he didn’t burn the place down.”
Tugging Shadow with them with plates in hand, they walked down the hall. Just as he was going to knock Shadow stopped him, pressing his ear to the door he could hear the soft chatter. Sonic pressed his ear to the door, emerald and ruby eyes fell to the floor to listen.
“Sure, I can do that. But I should go.” Tails chirped.
Shadow pulled back as they back tracked to the kitchen, setting plates down they sat at the island hearing the door open to the garage. Sonic perked up when Tails stepped down the hall smelling the air.
“Oh breakfast smells good!” Tails grinned. Shadow scowled at him, earning the fox to swallow thickly.
“So what took you, your breakfast is getting cold.” Sonic gestured to the plate stacked with pancakes with his fork.
“Sorry I got sidetracked, getting any more information about your cuffs.” Tails hummed, setting himself up a plate.
“He’s lying.” Shadow spoke, taking a bite. Sonic kicked him, earning a hiss from the ebony hedgehog. Sonic turned back to Tails, his face serious this time furrowing to him. Tails pinned his ears back and folded his arms behind his back. Sonic tilted his head to him.
“No.” Sonic hummed, “He’s not lying.”
Tails perked up to that, “See-”
“But he’s not telling the whole truth either. See Tails is the worst liar, so he tells vague information. So he’s not lying, just withholding information.”
“So you know something?” Shadow asked.
“I know enough.”
“Then break it.” Shadow gestured to their wrists, holding them out above the island table. Sonic took another bite of his breakfast. Tails shook his head and crossed his arms.
“There’s nothing I can do, not Rouge, not Knuckles. But you.” Tails turned away, “It all depends on you two.”
Sonic and Shadow turned to each other, Shadow’s face furrowed, turning to Tails again. Before he could ask anymore questions, he wolfed down a few pancakes and ran out the door. Sonic seemed surprised by this, eyebrows raised looking at the door. He gave a sigh turning back to his meal and mulled over his words. Stabbing a pancake piece and stuck it in his mouth. It all depends on them. His eyes drifted to the five crystals in his cuff, all shining bright, the stone keeping them together spun and twisted in the magnetic power it held them together. He leaned over to check the status of Shadow’s bracelet, the purple one was blinking its slow vibrance earning the attention of ruby eyes.
“What the?”
Rolling his wrist they looked over the colors, the purple one gave a hazy blink. Sonic gawked, rotating his wrist more to get a better look.
“What did you do?!” Sonic gasped.
“I don’t know!” Shadow hissed.
“Are you thinking about anything? What's going through your head?” Sonic turned to him, getting in his face.
Shadow growled, pushing him away and releasing his hand from his grip. Sonic huffed, crossing his arm over his chest, Shadow grumbled looking to his cuff again. His attention drawn to the blinking gem inside, Sonic leaned over his shoulder trying to think of what had caused the light to trigger. His eyes dragged from the gem to Shadow drawing the attention from the other.
“You got defensive about something earlier,” he tapped the gem and smirked at him, “Maybe you triggered it, so tell me what were you thinking.”
“Irrealivant,” Shadow growled, “I wasn’t thinking about anything. I didn’t hear you.”
It stilled, the blinking had stopped. Having Shadow pin his ears back, Sonic drew his attention back to Shadow’s face. Emerald eyes searched his crimson, furrowing to him he started to lean closer. Breath across his lips and brilliant eyes on him, suddenly Shadow’s brain short circuited.
“Did you lie to me?” Sonic asked.
“Shut- Just.” He shoved Sonic out of his face and grumbled, “Get out of my face.”
Sonic sighed knowing they weren’t going to get anywhere more about this. Not in this state, Shadow was still standoffish, still not trusting him in the slightest. So they sat, finishing their breakfast and cleaning up after the mess Sonic had made.
Shadow stood mulling over Tails’ words, ‘it all depends on you’. Like he was hinting at something, at least a nudge to push them in the right direction. His eyes drew to Sonic who was putting the leftovers in the fridge. Was he hiding something? His eyes narrowed as the fridge shut and Sonic blinked at him.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Sonic asked.
“What do you think Tails meant?” Shadow questioned.
“Pft- I donno, he’s always talking nonsense to me.” Sonic scoffed.
Shadow grumbled putting his free hand to his hip, “We aren’t getting anywhere with this- I need my laptop.”
“What’s your laptop going to do?- Wait.” Sonic gasped, clasping Shadow’s shoulder, “Does this mean we get to go to your apartment?!”
“Unfortunately.”
“Oh thank gaia!”
Chapter 4: Chapter Four
Chapter Text
“Don’t you think this is a bit- much?”
Rouge turned to Tails kicking his feet, ears pinned back as they sat on her balcony. Knuckles sat beside her in one of the outside chairs. She hummed, swirling her pink lemonade in her cup, sapphire eyes watching the lemon slices dance in her cup. There was a hint of sadness in her eyes as she took a sip.
“You love him don’t you?” She asked, turning back to Tails.
“Of course! Sonic is the best brother I’ve ever had.” He grinned.
“And you’d do everything to make him happy wouldn’t you?”
Tails smile slowly faded, slotting his hands between his knees. Rouge gave a soft hum turning to Knuckles, cupping his chin and giving him a gentle smile.
“I can’t watch him suffer anymore, maybe this will be the chance they need to finally say the things they need to say. And if they don’t- lets just say, they will probably be stuck like that for a very long time.” Rouge purred.
“How did you know?” Tails asked, “I mean it’s not like Sonic goes around broadcasting his feelings to everyone.”
“Our boy blue may keep his feelings in lock n key, but his eyes always search for the red that always are staring back. As someone who’s always watching the way they interact, the way they come running when the other is going into danger, says a lot more.”
Sonic perked up to the door being knocked on, Shadow turned his attention to the front door. They looked to each other then back to the door, Sonic groaned standing and tugging Shadow with him. They headed to the front door, Shadow mumbling curses as they approached the door. Looking at their wrists he went to stand behind the door as Sonic cracked it open enough to reveal just himself leaning against the door. His eyes narrowed to Cream standing at the front door, a vibrant letter in her hand fiddling with the golden seal in the center. Her chocolate eyes looked up to him and smiled softly.
“Oh! Mr. Sonic! You are home.” She hummed, folding the letter behind her back.
“What do I owe the pleasure of being greeted with your presence?” Sonic grinned.
“Mama wanted me to give this to you.” Cream held out the envelope to him, tucking her head between her arms. Sonic gingerly took the envelope from her hand and flipped it between his fingers. Her eyes perked back up to him as she rocked on her heels. She peeked around Sonic’s stance before looking back up at him.
“Are you looking for something?” He asked.
“I-” she fiddled with her gloves for a moment, “I was just seeing if Mr. Shadow was with you.”
Sonic eyed Shadow from behind the door, his ruby eyes glanced up at him. Then turned back to Cream with a soft smile.
“Why are you looking for Shadow?” He hummed.
“Mr. Jet came by the cafe- he was saying Mr. Shadow was around you. He didn’t seem very happy about it.” She mumbled. Sonic sighed, turning to Shadow, he held an irritated look. He pulled the door open stepping out behind it. Cream perked up and smiled bright, she rummaged in her bag and handed another envelope to him. Shadow gently took it from her and looked at the wax seal pressed into the paper. Cream’s eyes narrowed to their cuffed wrists and looked up at them.
“Are you guys playing a game?” She asked.
“Erm. Sorta.” Sonic scratched between his quills.
“Oh! Can I play?” Cream bounced, getting close to their cuffs. Her little hands poked and pulled at the little stone spinning between the golden cuffs. As Sonic was going to object, Shadow gestured to let her look. Afterall, Cream is full of imagination.
“Do you have to unlock all the levels?” she asked, looking up at them.
“And which levels are those?” Shadow asked with a soft smile on his lips, Sonic glanced at him for a moment then back to Cream. She cocked her head looking at all the colors.
“You know, you gotta beat all the colors, yellow being a sunny level, blue a rainy one, pink being the sunset, green in the jungle, and purple…” Cream gave a sideways frown, then looked up at them with uncertainty in her eyes. Shadow pondered over her words, looking at the colors on his wrist.
“Levels.” Shadow muttered, Cream nodded when she perked up hearing her mother. Vanilla was on the sidewalk with Vector. She turned back to Sonic and Shadow.
“I have to go, we can play another time.” She nodded, then bounded off. Sonic watched her rejoin her mother and be picked up. He waved as they did and headed back down the sidewalk. Sonic shut the door turning to Shadow, his eyes kept to their wrists and rotated his to get a better look at the colors.
“What are you thinking?” Sonic asked, tilting his head.
“She might have the right idea, they might be levels.” Shadow hummed. His emerald gaze turned to the colors in their cuffs.
“Are you entertaining this?” he cocked a brow.
“Do you have any better ideas?”
Sonic about to pipe in perking up to him, Shadow had a hand to his hip. Ruby eyes on him awaiting an answer, but suddenly, Sonic had his words stuck in his throat. Clearing his throat he patted the envelope to his thigh and turned to it.
“Oh yea we should see what this is all about.” Sonic quickly changed the subject, flicking off the wax seal, using his linked hand he pulled out the envelope and Shadow peaked over his shoulder.
‘We would like to invite you to the engagement party of Vanilla the rabbit and Vector the crocodile this evening. We have filled the evening with partying and full of snacks for all. We hope to see you later tonight.’
Sonic turned to Shadow with a wide smile on his face, which was returned with a heavy scowl.
“No.” Shadow huffed.
“Oh come on! It’ll be fun! I’m sure everyone will be there.” Sonic hummed.
“Why would that make me want to go?”
“Well, if everyone is going… I’m sure Rouge would be there.”
Shadow flicked his ear, his scowl deepening. Looking at their conjoined wrists, he knew the headache he’d have eyes on them, questions, and the same explanation. If Rouge was going to be there it would give him a chance to get the instructions from her. He could be running the risk of being seen being conjoined to the blue headache and not even seeing her there. Along with running the risk of running into the squawking feather duster.
“Whadda say Shadow?” Sonic hummed, “It’ll be fun!”
“We are running too many risks to see if she’d even be there.” Shadow scoffed.
“And we are running the risk that if she is there, we can’t just sit here and wait. Besides, if we can get more heads on this the better.” Sonic lifted their wrist and wiggled his hand, “We are on the right track, we just need to figure out how to go from here.”
“And if we go get my laptop-”
“Shadow come on.” Sonic groaned, “If we hit a dead end tonight we can go straight to your apartment where I will sit with my eyes shut and I won’t say a thing, just pleas-”
“Enough.” Shadow barked. He growled rubbing his face with his free hand, “Fine.”
Sonic grinned brightly and did a little dance beside him, he eyed him feeling the headache start to buzz in the back of his skull. Sonic led him upstairs so they could get ready.
After a bit of struggle to put on clothes, of just borrowing Sonic’s button downs. It was surprisingly easy to pull them on since they weren’t physically chained together. But getting the other to cooperate was a pain. Sonic would wiggle when Shadow dressed himself, excited that he was borrowing his clothes. Then Shadow made Sonic struggle as he wouldn’t give him their conjoined arm, just to give him a taste of his own medicine.
Sonic sighed, shutting the door behind them, turning to Shadow he had his cheek between his teeth. He wasn’t making any sort of eye contact with him whatsoever. Dressed in a white button down, mostly buttoned but giving enough chest fluff to breathe. Sonic tried to get him to match with him in blue but that was a hard no. So Sonic still ended up wearing the red one.
“Alright, you ready to bust it down?” Sonic wiggled his brows at him.
“Bust it down?” Shadow scoffed.
“You know, get jiggy with it, bust a move?” Shadow gave no reaction to him, “Dance, Shadow, you ready to dance?”
“I’m not dancing.”
“You say this now, but I will get you to dance.”
Taking hands, they sped off into the neighborhood. Light of gold and blue zoomed through the streets making their way into the city. Slowing down the hedgehogs stepped up to the cafe where there was music bouncing and rumbling the streets. Shadow frowned to the building making smaller steps than Sonic, who at this point was dragging him inside. As they stepped through the doors, life bounded and bumped into each other. Shadow’s grip on Sonic’s hand tightened, earning his attention Sonic gave him a soft smile.
“We will find her, she’s got to be around here somewhere.” Sonic nodded. Shadow gave an unsure glance then back out to the crowd. They pushed and pulled each other through the bodies mingling and dancing on the floor. Sonic had brought them to the front counter where Vanilla and Vector stood chatting with each other. Their attention was brought to them and had a slight surprised look on their faces. Vanilla smiled walking around the counter and embraced Sonic.
“I’m glad you both were able to make it!” She shouted, making sure her appreciations were heard.
“I’m happy you invited us!” Sonic hollered back, “Are the guys here?”
“I saw Tails and Knuckles a little while ago, they might be outback. I think Rouge was with them.” Her eyes narrowed to Shadow, he stiffened to her attention. Sonic raised their wrists as he chuckled.
“He was going to come with me anyway.” Sonic laughed.
“I am pleased to be graced with both of your presence.” She grinned.
“The pleasure is all mine.” Shadow nodded, “These aren’t my typical places to be, but I will indulge for a special occasion.”
Vanilla went to embrace him, Shadow patted her back and as he was going to pull away she held him a bit longer.
“You look happy.” She spoke in his ear and pulled back. Shadow pressed his lips in a line as she stepped back to be at Vectors side. Sonic waved as they weaved past them and into the back. Pushing open the door, Knuckles and Tails sat in small chairs clinking their glasses together. Tails ears immediately pinned back seeing Sonic and Shadow.
“Busted.” Tails muttered. Knuckles turned to them and grinned holding up his drink.
“Ah if it isn’t the-”
“Where. Is. She.” Shadow seethed.
Knuckles frowned, “Didn’t even get a drink first? Jeez already pooping at the party.”
“Just- where is the bat?” Shadow snapped.
“It’s alright boys.”
They perked up to Rouge fluttering down from the roof, she wore a black strapless short dress. Folding her arms over her chest she smirked at them, Shadow growled about to attack her when Sonic wrapped his bound wrist around him. Locking him in place by his own arm and Sonic’s, he gave a sheepish smile feeling Shadow’s threatening glare. Sonic held Shadow’s shoulders and swallowed thickly.
“Oh Rouge! You look stunning, is that a new dress?” Sonic grinned.
“Oh this old thing? I’m so glad you asked-”
“I’m going to kill you!” Shadow barked.
“Shadow is that anyway to talk to someone who has the information to get you to be free?” She smirked.
“I’ll cut my own arm off if I have to.” Shadow snarled.
“Relax, will you?” Rouge sighed approaching them, she looked to the colored gems all still glowing. Giving a disappointed sigh she looked back to them, she looked to Knuckles and Tails who quickly got up and headed back inside. She untangled Shadow from Sonic’s touch and hummed dipping her head a bit lower looking at them.
“So how has it been? Been working well together?” She purred, “Enjoying each other's company?”
“Rouge let us go.” Shadow snarled.
“It’s out of my hands, you see..” she took both of their bound wrists looking at them, “It's on your own, after all the cuffs have chosen you. Which means, you both are hiding something from the other.”
Both ebony and cobalt ears pinned back, glancing to each other for a breath of a moment then back to Rouge. She gave a hum rotating their wrists to reveal the gems shining inside.
“Rouge, I mean come on I’m not hiding anything.” Sonic laughed, putting a hand to his hip.
“Oh? Is that so?” She asked, cocking a smirk at him, rotating their wrists to show the colors. Sonic pursed his lips.
“Seems like neither of you are doing the talking, so maybe I’ll push you in the right direction.” she purred, releasing Shadow’s wrist and drawing her fingers up Sonic’s to cup his chin. Taking his side she pressed her cheek to Sonic’s and held a smug smile on her lips. Cupping the other pressing their faces together, having Sonic glance at her then to Shadow.
“Doesn’t he look handsome tonight?” She purred, Shadow’s lip twitched pressing his lips in a line.
“What does this have to do with anything?” Shadow hissed.
“Don’t tease the poor boy Shadow, I’m just giving you the courage to say what you want.”
Shadow furrowed to that, she pulled her grasp away from Sonic and took Shadow’s side. Turquoise eyes fell to the blue hero whose eyes flicked between her and Shadow. Who was looking at her with a hardened look.
“And what about you blue? Hm? Aren’t you just brimming with excitement that Shadow’s out at a party with you?” Rouge purred, “Dressed very dashing as well.”
“You don’t have to indulge her.” Shadow huffed at her, “She’s avoiding the subject.”
“No better than you, might I add.” Rouge turned to him.
“Well yea, I am glad Shadow’s here.” Sonic spoke, he rubbed his bound wrist avoiding eye contact. Drawing their attention, Rouge smiled, her eyes glanced to their wrists seeing the blinking green gem on Sonic’s wrist.
“But like I’m just happy that he’s out and not by himself somewhere and-” the light stopped flashing having Rouge huff.
“You two are stubborn.” she sighed.
“Enough! Rouge, give me the instructions.” Shadow barked.
“I’ve told you how to get out of this, you just have to…” she pondered for a moment putting a finger to her chin, then her eyes met theirs, “Take that leap.”
With a laugh Rouge slipped by them and back into the party, Shadow growled, taking a step to follow her. But his arm was pulled on, looking to Sonic over his shoulder he stood with his lip stuck between his teeth.
“I- Y- You, You do look dashing tonight Shadow.” Sonic spoke, locking his jaw he eyed Shadow who’s demeanor softened. Sonic swallowed thickly taking his hand looking to their wrists, both green lights flickered. He looked back to Shadow still studying him.
“I- I think the green one is courage. So- There I said it.” Sonic squeezed his hand, hoping to get some reaction out of the ebony hedgehog. His eyes finally tore from Sonic and looked to the gems, both flickering back and forth of green.
“I’ve always thought red was a good color on you.” Shadow glanced at him then to the alleyway around them, “You do look… handsome tonight.”
There was a soft click and the green gem had dulled its color, Sonic smiled looking back up to Shadow.
“What are we standing around for? We should join the rest of the party!” Sonic beamed, “We have to celebrate.”
Taking his hand and leading them back into the party with a slam of the door behind them.

Chapter Text
Music was blaring, bodies mingled on the dance floor, and they stood by the drink table. Sonic bobbing back and forth to the music, wild smile on his face taking a large drink out of his cup. Shadow watched him, knowing these drinks were spiked and wouldn’t affect him as quickly as it would Sonic. Who he could tell was already feeling the buzz. But was still there enough to respect that Shadow wouldn’t want to go dance with all of them.
Ruby eyes fell back to his cup, liquid courage. With a sharp breath he tossed the rest of it back and set the empty cup on the table. With bound hand, he earned Sonic’s attention by holding out his hand. Emerald eyes glanced to his hand then to his stoic expression.
“What are you doing?” Sonic asked in a loud enough question.
“I’m taking my leap.” Shadow retorted.
Sonic grinned taking his hand, pulling them close together hand to lower back and shoulder they swayed back and forth. With clumsy steps and enough turns, they ended up on the dance floor. Soft eyes kept to each other, pulled close and danced between each of their legs. Sonic laughed as Shadow spun them once more, earning a soft smile from the ebony hedgehog. Emerald eyes fell upon that smile, his heart fluttered. Shadow was enjoying himself, dancing with him, at a party in the middle of the dance floor.
The music began to slow, Shadow glanced around noticing they were. Right in the middle of the floor, eyes on them. He was suddenly aware of where they were, and what they were doing.
“You said you’d teach me how to dance right? Teach me.” Sonic grinned.
“I-”
“Don’t look at them, look at me.” Sonic nodded, “It’s just you and me.”
Ruby eyes found their home of emerald seas, watching him with a sparkle and bubbling with excitement. Slipping his hand back into Shadow’s stiffened grasp and smiled. After a beat that they stood there, Shadow finally moved. Stepping in the imaginary square that they weaved through, slow and careful at first, until Sonic got the hang of it. Following in Shadow’s lead, they danced in their space, as Sonic said before. It was just the two of them, dancing in the living room in Sonic’s house. The binding they were joined with, non-existent in this moment, Shadow and Sonic dancing together. As if it was an imaginary scenario they had come up with and finally brought together.
“When did you learn how to do this?” Sonic hummed.
“Maria wanted to learn. Never got the chance to.” Shadow muttered. Sonic’s eyes softened for a moment.
“Well, you are quite the dancer.” Sonic hummed, “You hear me Maria!”
Shadow gave a chuckle and hushed him, taking new steps into turning them and twirled Sonic in their conjoined hands. Pulling him back into him, Shadow smiled watching Sonic look back down to their feet, bewildered at how quickly he was able to pick up dancing.
“Thank you.” Shadow spoke, drawing Sonic’s attention back to him.
“What for?” Sonic asked.
“I’m having a good time.”
Sonic’s quills flared as he grinned bright, “You are?!”
Shadow nodded, “I still won’t do this often but-”
“I’m having a good time too.”
Their eyes drew to the yellow flickering gems on their wrists. Then turned to each other with soft smiles, genuine happiness shared between the two.
Suddenly Shadow halted, his eyes drew to the hand that grasped his quills. Jet stood behind him seething, cup crushed in his hand. Shadow growled, reaching behind him to grasp his wrist, curling his nails into his flesh. Not tight enough to break skin, but enough to earn a hiss from the other.
“Jet, let him go.” Sonic huffed, “I don’t want to cause a scene.”
“A scene?! Like this isn’t a scene?!” Jet spat, “The hermit comes out of hiding to waltz right back into your life and then what? Hm? Did you forget about me? Your boyfriend!?”
“That’s it.” Shadow growled.
In a breath Shadow had swiped his ankles and threw him over his shoulder. Jet lied on the floor before them, Shadow snarled, grabbing his feathers and dragged him off the dance floor. He cried out digging dull nails into Shadow’s tightened hand. Sonic pleaded Shadow to let him go but his pleas fell to deaf ears while they were drug out to the front doors. Tossing Jet to the sidewalk he turned to Sonic with a heated anger in his eyes.
“I don’t want to deal with this, the rest of the time we are stuck like this.” Shadow hissed.
“I know, I- I’ll handle it just. For now just stay out of it.” Sonic huffed, his attention turning to Jet brushing himself off from the sidewalk.
“I’m not talking while HE is here.” Jet snapped.
Sonic showed their cuffed wrists, “Where’s he gonna go?”
“This is all just a ploy to get me to dump your ass again, and I’m getting close!”
Shadow perked up to that, Sonic gave an irritated sigh.
“Can we talk about this later? Not while we are on the street, outside- mind you, Vanilla and Vector’s engagement party?” Sonic gestured back inside.
“It’s always later with you, dancing around the issue until it gets bad enough that finally we talk about it.”
Sonic pointed a finger at him, “You have an issue with picking fights at the worst timing, I can never enjoy the company of my friends, or anyone without you making a scene!”
“Oh and the scene you both-”
“Don’t drag me into this.” Shadow scoffed. Jet glared at him.
“You sure do have wonderful timing sticking your nose back into his life again, where you been Shadow? Hm? And now suddenly you both are conventionally handcuffed together without the key. Mighty convenient right after-”
“Shut it!” Sonic snapped, getting between them, “I’m done, I’m done with everything you throw at me, I’m done with you dragging my friends, and everyone around me through your egotistical bullshit. We are done.”
Shadow eyed the back of Sonic’s head, his quills raised for a moment, then lied back into their trademark state. He narrowed his gaze to his hand. Gripped tight in a fist, furrowing he glanced at Jet who’s feathers were flared and his face curled in a deep frown. There was a thickness in the air, it was heavy, as if the stress Sonic had held finally washed off him and settled in the air. And it was heavy, very apparent that the tension Jet had dropped on his shoulders was weighted during their relationship.
“It’s because he’s here isn’t it, and once he leaves again you’ll come crawling back!” Jet hissed.
“This is my decision,” Sonic snapped, “Get out of my sight.”
“I hope your heart gets broken again.” Jet snarled.
Turning on his heel again he started to walk off, when a strong grip on his shoulder made him stop. As he was in the midst of turning around, Shadow socked him square in the beak knocking him down. He stood above him and shook his hand, watching blood drip from his nose.
“That was a warning.” Shadow scoffed. Turning back he led Sonic back inside, pouring them another drink he handed another plastic cup to Sonic. Emerald eyes searched ruby as Shadow cocked a brow to him.
“You didn’t have to do that, I mean he could-”
“I am not scared of the pigeon, I got tired of hearing him squawk.” Shadow growled, taking a sip and rolling his eyes.
“Listen about what Jet said, I-”
“It's a story for another day, we are having fun at an engagement party. Bask in the time you have before my headache gets worse.”
Sonic laughed, taking another drink from his cup, after both finishing their cups and refilling. Sonic held out his cup to Shadow, earning a skeptical glance at him.
“To unlocking our freedom.” Sonic grinned.
“To our freedom.” Shadow nodded, clicking his plastic cup to Sonic’s.
They took a sip together, Sonic led Shadow through to mingle with some of his friends. Shadow still looked around for Rouge, the only other comfort he’d find in a place like this. But his eyes caught a set of emerald, much lighter in color, more of a mint. Her jaw dropped open and the cup she held in her hand dropped to the floor.
“Rose has spotted us.” Shadow leaned over to Sonic, he leaned over seeing Amy who’s expression got more shocked than previous. She quickly said her goodbyes and pushed through the bodies to approach them. Sonic smiled at her as she embraced him, pulling back and she noticed that they were locked together with the cuffs. Her face got bright red and cupped her cheeks.
“I- You both are in public-”
“It’s not like that.” They spat. Shadow cleared his throat brushing off the embarrassment.
“We are quite literally, locked together.” Shadow huffed.
“And you conventionally lost the key?” Amy cocked a brow, “Oh, I can play this game too.”
Shadow rolled his eyes looking at Sonic, he rubbed the back of his neck.
“Well, so far we’ve been able to unlock one of the five gems.” Sonic rotated his wrist showing off the colored gems, “So far the green one is honesty, yellow is happiness- and that’s how far we’ve gotten. And we were close to unlocking happiness, but Jet-”
She held up her hand, “No need to explain, lemme see what else you got.”
Holding both of their wrists she hummed looking at the colors, cocking her head she muttered to herself. Trailing her finger over the gems, then to the stone locking them together. She flicked it watching it spin and bounce, then resettled between their wrists.
“Well, I can assume that the blue is for sadness, green honesty, yellow happiness, pink anger, and purple… uh.” she scratched her cheek, “Well that could mean a lot of things, creativity, loyalty, or something a bit deeper.”
Her eyes looked up at them, like she was searching for something. For a brief moment Amy’s eyes lit up before dropping their hands. As if their hands were scalding, she folded her hands behind her back and smiled.
“Oh.” Amy gave a realising hum, “Anyway, looks like you both will have to figure out the rest from here.”
“Well it’s been more help than Rouge had given us.” Sonic huffed.
“If you keep telling them that Rouge knows, everyone will know more than we will.” Shadow sighed.
“Anyway, we are going to go party some more before I gotta take grumpy pants home.” Sonic shot his thumb in Shadow’s direction, earning the ebony hedgehog to roll his eyes. Saying their goodbyes Sonic went to mingle with some other friends, running back into Tails and Knuckles again. Shadow stood off to the side, at least arm length away. Shadow’s back was to Sonic’s as his to him, with another drink in his hand, unsure how he acquired it but was sipping it to keep his headache at bay.
“Congratulations.”
His attention was brought to Rouge holding out a cup, she held a soft smile on her lips.
“For?” Shadow cocked a brow to her.
“Well, you are now stuck to the hottest bachelor of- well practically the universe now.” She hummed. Shadow turned to Sonic who wasn’t listening anyway, then snapped back to Rouge scowling at her.
“Shut it.” Shadow snarled, Rouge giggled taking the space next to him. Standing close enough to have a conversation for just the two of them.
“Why did you do this?” Shadow huffed, glancing at her. Rouge shrugged slightly looking at her cup.
“I couldn’t have my best friend be miserable his whole life.” She hummed, “Besides, I don’t think I’ve seen our boy blue smile as bright as he has with you.”
Their attention was given to the blue hedgehog borrowing Shadow’s hand to explain a story in great detail. Causing a hand explosion and dropping both their hands, brushing knuckles across each other. Prickling Shadow’s skin he gave a faint smile looking back to his cup.
“I’m sure if you drop your walls a bit, there’s something for you waiting on the other side.” Rouge hummed.
“And what if I’m left empty handed?” Shadow asked.
“I doubt it, cross my heart.” Rouge drew an x on her breast and held out her hand, “Scouts honor.”
“You were never a scout, nor could you be.” Shadow scoffed.
“Shadow you flatter me so.”
“Can you answer me this then- do the gems represent emotions? Do we have to experience them together- or what?”
Rouge pursed her lips tapping her index finger to her cheek, “Well, yes they do represent emotions. And I think it depends? I donno, some of the instructions were lost in translation.”
Shooting her a sceptical look, Rouge took a sip from her cup.
“Whatcha guys talking about?” Sonic dipped his head down to gain their attention. Rouge smiled, wrapping an arm around Shadow’s shoulder.
“Shadow was just talking about how much he’d love to watch you do karaoke.” Rouge hummed.
“Really!? I can d-”
“I never said that.” Shadow huffed. Sonic’s expression deflated.
“Oh we can talk about how you were talking about how handsome Sonic looked to-”
“I’m going to strangle you.” Shadow snarled turning to her, slipping from her she laughed. He tugged their wrists, taking them back to the drink table.
“I bet I can drink more than you can.”
Shadow slowly cranked his head to look at Sonic holding a smug grin on his lips. Brushing him off he poured them another cup from the freshly made bowl.
“You know alcohol doesn’t affect me as much as it affects you right?” Shadow cocked a brow.
“Oh, it’s ok you can say you're too chicken. I understand.” Sonic’s grin only widened. Shadow rolled his tongue in his cheek handing off the cup. His emerald gaze looked to Shadow over the rim of his cup, already drinking down his cup and handed back the empty cup. Batting his eyes to the dark hedgehog, baiting him for the challenge.
Who was weak to accept it.
Shadow dropped the sixth empty cup, Sonic had burped, finishing off his. Shadow could feel the buzz of it finally, but Sonic on the other hand. Sloshing drunk. Giggling and throwing his cup to the floor and shouting. He stumbled when Shadow caught him, taking hands Sonic used his free arm to balance himself on Shadow's side. Wrapping his hand to the crease of his elbow and leaning on him quite a bunch. Emerald eyes swimming in liquor looked to Shadow and grinned up at him.
“Oh Shadow, when did you get here?” Sonic grinned.
“I’ve been here.” Shadow scoffed a laugh, “Don’t let go of me, okay?”
“Yes yes, whatever you say dear.” Sonic laughed.
Shadow shook his head, “Yea we are going home.”
“Oh! No Shadow come onnnnnn It’ll be soooo funnnnn. Just one dance, you and me. Pleaseee I’ll go straight home afterwards, I promise.”
Sonic’s attention was drawn to his chest fur, reaching over and patting the white fur. He hummed, combing his fingers through the pure soft fur. Shadow gripped his hand pulling his hand off his chest and back to his arm.
“One dance, then we go home.” Shadow huffed. Sonic rolled his head to get Shadow’s attention, a shit eating smirk on his lips.
“You do hold a soft spot for me.” Sonic grinned.
“You talk to Rouge too much.” Shadow frowned.
“I don’t think I talk to her enough, maybe I should go say hi.”
“I don’t think so, come on.”
Shadow with light steps guided Sonic to the dance floor, still hand in hand the blue blur danced and swayed to the music. Shadow watched from the sideline, at least for a moment until Sonic yanked him to him. Pressing his body to him, inserting his knee between Shadow’s and wrapping his unshackled arm around Shadow’s neck. He laughed leaning back dipping them down, Shadow quickly snaking his arm around his lower back. Adjusting his stance to take Sonic’s weight in one arm.
As Sonic opened his eyes he looked up to Shadow, his expression dropped. Drunken eyes studying his ruby gaze to him. His eyes dropped to his lips, parting his own for a moment. Shadow caught that look, feeling his blood run hot and subconsciously lick his own. He pulled Sonic back up, redrawing back his attention.
“Come on, let's go home.” Shadow nodded.
“But.” Sonic whined.
“If we go home now, I’ll buy you a chili dog for lunch tomorrow.”
“That sounds soooo goooddd!”
Sonic flopped onto him, Shadow adjusting to the weight and pulled him up on his hips. Grumbling the other rested on his chin on Shadow’s shoulder, he turned taking Sonic out of the cafe and outside. He gave a sigh of relief to the cool air around them and his arm wrapped tighter around Shadow’s neck. He caught a whiff of something…. floral. Sniffing around he lifted his head higher.
“What are you doing?” Shadow growled.
“Something smells good! Pretty.” Sonic hummed, but as his nose brushed Shadow’s quills. He smelt the heavy scent of floral. He nuzzled closer to the smell when Shadow stiffened.
“Knock it off!” Shadow barked.
“But you smell so pretty!” Sonic whined.
“Yes! It’s the lavender oil I put in my quills, now sit still.” Shuffling in his quills he pulled out a chaos emerald. Sonic grumbled knowing the impact that would happen next. In a green flash they were at the front steps of Sonic’s house.
“You gotta put me down.” Sonic grumbled, “I’m gonna be sick.”
Shadow slowly set Sonic down, and when his shoes hit the ground he immediately hunched over and spewed all the liquor from his stomach. Shadow sighed, kneeling down with him while Sonic hiccuped on the doorsteps. Tears dripped from his eyes as saliva dripped from his lips. glossed emerald eyes found their way to Shadow who looked at him with a soft expression. Sonic immediately turned away dry heaving into the pavement, which followed by spit up of the last of the liquor in his stomach. Panting softly, he squeezed shut his eyes and let the rest of the tears fall.
“I hope I didn’t ruin your good time.” Sonic grumbled.
“I’m still having a good time.” Shadow hummed.
“I literally just threw up, I doubt this is a good time.”
“I’m still spending time with you, so. I’m having a good time. Besides you won’t remember this anyway so, I’ll let my guard down for a bit.”
Sonic hummed and leaned against the other, “You arreee a big ol softie.”
“Lets get you cleaned up. Come on, you think you can stand?”
Shadow stood as Sonic wobbled getting up, taking hands he was led inside of the house. Stumbling to kick off shoes and using Shadow as his support, unaware of how loud Sonic was being. A door down the hall creaked open as Tails stepped out rubbing his eyes.
“Apologizes, we… had a good time.” Shadow sighed, Sonic laughed leaning against him.
“I can see that, erm. Can I help in any way?” Tails asked.
“Water, and if you have any bread? I’d like something then nothing in his stomach.”
Tails nodded as Shadow led Sonic up the stairs, drunken state murmuring- words Shadow thought. Pushing open the door and stumbling into the room. He pushed Sonic onto the bed and turned on the lamp next to his bed, Sonic having a giggle fit as Shadow shrugged off his button up, immediately shutting up the giggling hedgehog. Wide emerald eyes on him as Shadow slipped the fabric between their conjoined wrists. Ruby eyes caught that look and slid the rest of his shirt off the other arm.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Shadow asked. Sonic rolled onto his stomach and propped his head up on his palm.
“I’m just enjoying the show.” Sonic purred, Shadow pursed his lips then noticed the cobalt tail wagging back and forth behind him.
“And you are still dressed.” Shadow scoffed.
“Ugh! I’ve been good all night, give me something!” Sonic whined dropping his head into the bed.
“What are you talking about?”
The door was knocked on when Tails came in, with a plate of toast and water. He set it next to Sonic’s side of the bed as he looked down to Sonic putting his hands on his hips.
“Do you need help getting undressed?” Tails asked.
“Nooo.” Sonic groaned into the mattress.
“I can handle it, thank you. Head back to bed.” Shadow sighed. Tails nodded and headed out of the room and shut the door, Shadow looked to the cobalt hedgehog face down into the mattress. Still groaning out his ‘no’.
“If you cooperate I will reward you with- whatever you want, just get up.” Shadow barked. Sonic’s head snapped up with a wild smile.
“Really?” Sonic grinned.
“Depends on what you want.” Shadow eyed him suspiciously. In a blink Sonic had crawled onto the bed and pressed his free hand to Shadow’s chest. Pulling their conjoined wrists over his shoulder, pressing Shadow closer to him. Emerald eyes wild and full of intoxication, fingers twirling his chest fur.
“Call me a good boy.” He grinned.
“I’m not doing that.” Shadow scoffed.
“You're right, it’s too much for you to handle.” Sonic raised his hands in surrender, pulling Shadow’s with his, “Afterall the hero of Mobias being called such a meek thing by the ultimate lifeform would be such a scandal for your reputation.”
Shadow took a long slow inhale eyeing the devil that was bound to his wrist. His lips twisted into a sadistic smirk, as if he knew how to crawl under Shadow’s skin and get what he wanted.
“If I agree to your terms will you. Go. To. Bed?” Shadow hissed. Sonic’s smirk only grew wider.
“Yes yes..” Sonic nodded.
“I will indulge in your request then. Now undress yourself.”
Sonic snickered to himself clumsily unbuttoning his shirt, Shadow gave an irritated sigh before he helped him out. Flicking off each and every button and then pulling back to let the other pull off the rest of his shirt. Sonic tossed it to the floor and turned to Shadow with perked ears and a smile on his lips.
“I had to help you, I am not rewarding you.” Shadow grumbled.
“But I did what you asked.” Sonic batted his eyes.
Shadow scowled, turning away from him and with the most monotone and dry voice he spoke, “Good boy.”
Sonic frowned, “That was lame, even for you.”
“I did what you asked.” Shadow snapped to him.
“You gonna make me beg? Is that what you want? I can beg, I can grovel. I bet you’d love me to beg for you-”
“What are you- Sit your ass down and eat. I’m not entertaining whatever you are making me do.”
Sonic grumbled flopping onto the bed and started to nibble on his toast. Shadow watched him making sure he ate the whole thing. And once he finished off the piece of bread he swiveled his attention back to the ebony hedgehog next to him.
“Now drink your water and go to bed.” Shadow nodded.
“Ah- we made a deal.” Sonic purred leaning against his shoulder, “Put some meaning behind it.”
Shadow growled an irritated sigh, glancing to the door then back to the blue drunk on his shoulder. If it was to make him flush out the liquor in his system, and he mentally prayed to Maria that he’d not remember this in the morning. Shadow reached for his chin and scratched under it gently.
“Good boy.” Shadow spoke, it was deep and low, earning Sonic to bristle and his lips pull into a wild smile. He giggled when his face broke out in a deep blush burying his face in his hands. Shadow shook his head, biting back his embarrassment.
“Now drink your damn water.” Shadow barked. Sonic giggled some more and took the cup between his hand and as he took a big gulp-
“Slowly! I don’t want you to get sick again.”
Sonic grumbled sipping the water slowly, until gone he gave a sigh of relief as he finished it. Setting the cup down he curled up in bed and looked up at Shadow, he could hear his own tail beating against the bed with wild thumps. Shadow sneered at him for a moment. Reaching out and stroking his head he scratched just behind his ears.
“Good boy.” Shadow spoke in the same tone. Sonic giggled burying his head in his pillow. Shadow reached out and shut off the light, reaching into his quills he pulled out his phone. Sonic perked up and rested on his shoulder as Shadow was scrolling on the internet.
“Whatcha doing?” Sonic yawned.
“Just researching, go to sleep.” Shadow said.
“Okay.” and Sonic curled up against him, wrapping his free arm around Shadow’s waist.
“By morning you better be on the other side of the bed.” Shadow growled.
“Mhm-” Sonic hummed.
Shadow wrapped his free arm around the back of Sonic as he googled emotions, maybe they’d be able to enlighten them with- something. He perked up when he got a text message from Rouge.
‘Hope you and blue made it home safe, don’t have too much fun~’
Shadow tossed his phone away and shut his eyes to finally sleep.
Sonic awoke the next morning, a dull pain sitting behind his eyes. Nausea brimming at the bottom of his stomach, and a warmth on his back. He snapped his eyes open, he eyed the black and red striped arms wrapped around him. The one free hand behind his shoulder, as the bound one wrapped around his waist. Legs tangled together as Sonic rolled ever so slightly to look behind him. Shadow’s head curled behind his neck and breathing softly. He smiled softly, turning back to nuzzle against his pillow. Such movements earned the other to pull him closer and take a sharp breath, but soon settled back into his peaceful sleep.

Chapter Text
Shadow woke up that next morning, entangled in limbs. Sonic curled up under his chin, shackled hands holding each other. His arm wrapped around his shoulders holding Sonic close to himself. Legs locked around each other, as the blankets and sheets sprawled off the bed. Shadow sighed, combing through cobalt quills, for at least a weak attempt to wake up the other.
“Sonic, come on. We should get up.” Shadow grumbled.
“Five more minutes.” Sonic sighed.
“If you get up now, I’ll take you out to get that chili dog you wanted.”
Sonic’s eyes snapped open, slowly cranking his head up to look at Shadow. He then hissed at the day and curled himself back into Shadow’s chest.
“Too bright no way.” Sonic grunted.
“I will take care of that, I just need you to get up.” Shadow spoke.
Shadow pulled them into a sitting position, Sonic squinted at him pulling away from his chest. The daylight having his headache throb behind his eyes, nausea swimming at the bottom of his stomach, and the sound of more sleep sounded like the only remedy. Shadow cupped his face, licking his lips, and planted a soft kiss on his forehead. Sonic immediately snapped his eyes wide open, feeling the heated lips to his forehead. Washing away all the hangover he bore that morning. Shadow pulled back looking over Sonic who was still in his shock of what just happened.
“Feel better?” Shadow asked. Sonic’s gaze drifted up to him, eyes gleaming and tail slowly wagging. Shadow furrowed to his expression.
“How did you do that?” Sonic asked.
“It’s my purpose, to heal all illnesses.”
“Oh- I mean. It didn’t work, I think it’ll work better if you kiss me here.” then tapped his lips. Sonic shut his eyes and puckered his lips.
“You seem fine to me.” Shadow huffed.
“Nope, It's the only quick remedy. Oh! Ouch Shadow my headache ooohhhh-”
Shadow rolled his eyes, his irritated gaze falling to the sad excuse for a hedgehog before him. Hands clasped together, pursing his lips tighter. Sighing he pressed a chaste kiss to his lips and pulled back.
“There, get up.” Shadow huffed. Sonic pressed his lips in a line as Shadow climbed out of bed. Sonic followed suit as they headed out of the room and down the stairs. Shadow toed on his shoes latching his airshoes on-
“No.” Shadow spoke, sliding the tongue of the buckle through.
“I didn’t say anything!” Sonic huffed.
“You were going to ask to wear them.”
Sonic’s jaw snapped shut as he put on his shoes. Tapping the toes of his shoes he turned to Shadow pulling out his phone, Sonic peeked over his shoulder but Shadow locked his phone before Sonic could read anything. He pouted as Shadow took his hand and led them out the door.
“Where are we going?” Sonic asked.
“To my place, I need to get to my laptop.” Shadow grumbled. Sonic immediately beamed, snapping his attention back to Shadow.
“Then what are we waiting for?!” Sonic grinned.
Shadow took a slow agitated sigh, pulling out his chaos emerald. Sonic frowned, putting his hand over it.
“Can’t we just run? Please?” Sonic asked. Ruby eyes kept to him for a moment, then put away the emerald. He grinned as they took off, zipping through the outskirts and right into the city. Shadow slowed to the heart of the city and shuffled in his quills for a keycard. Pressing it to the door, it unlocked and they headed inside. Sonic immediately looked around, taking in every detail that he could. But it wasn’t long before Shadow pulled him into the elevator. Pressing his keycard to the sensor he pressed the sixth floor and the doors shut. Sonic took a mental note of that as he turned to Shadow.
“You will shut your eyes and keep your mouth shut.” Shadow hissed.
“Oh come on Shadow, you’ve seen my place! It’s only fair.” Sonic whined.
Shadow drew a zipper over his lips and snarled at him. Sonic pressed his lips in a line and turned away from him. As the doors opened they headed down a lone hallway and stopped to six forty. Tapping his card to the door, the door unlocked and Shadow opened it. Before taking a step inside he turned to Sonic. He groaned, shutting his eyes and Shadow pulled him inside. It was dark, and cold. That’s all Sonic could tell, but he followed the pull of Shadow’s arm. There was some shuffling around, and then Shadow had pulled him onto the couch. Sonic sat, sparing his bound hand to let Shadow type on his computer.
“This is stupid.” Sonic huffed.
“You agreed to it if we went to that party last night. I don’t want to hear it.” Shadow grunted.
“What are you going to do if I open my eyes?” Sonic asked.
“I’m going to buy a chili dog, and eat it right in front of you.” Shadow spoke typing away on his computer.
“But you don’t like chili dogs.”
“I said what I said.”
Sonic groaned, throwing his head back against the couch, Shadow glanced at him then back to his laptop. He typed away for a while, as if to be responding to some emails or whatever he was doing. Sonic drummed against his stomach to a soft tune stuck in his head from the night prior. Redrawing Shadow’s attention back to him, he pressed his lips in a line then back to his computer.
“Since you can’t go anywhere, you can open your eyes.” Shadow spoke, “We aren’t exploring my apartment.”
Sonic snapped open his eyes, there was a dim light of a lamp in the corner. They sat in a rounded couch, with a wide tv curling towards the couch. The cool air of the air conditioner was blowing around them, but the curtains were drawn to the outdoors. Sonic looked up to the large chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
“Woah! This place is nice!” Sonic grinned. His eyes narrowed to an upstairs, oh the itch to go up there and see Shadow’s things. What dirty secrets he held up there. It had to be his room, Sonic turned to Shadow who glanced at him from his laptop then back to the screen.
“What if I made another deal with you?” Sonic grinned, scooting himself closer, to be hip and hip with the ebony hedgehog.
“You didn’t follow through with our last deal.” Shadow grunted.
“Ah! I did but you just said it was fine so- that was on you.” Sonic leaned against his shoulder.
“What is your proposal then?” Shadow rolled his eyes.
“Proposal? Oh Shadow I didn’t know you felt that way about me.” Sonic batted his eyes to him. Shadow slammed his laptop down and snapped his head to him. A feverish blush on his face but eyes threatening death.
“What do you want?” Shadow seethed.
“I want to explore your apartment.” Sonic grinned, “In trade for, I will let you go through my secret box I have under my bed.”
“Secret box? How does that compare?” Shadow asked.
“You aren’t the only man of mysteries. No one knows about it, well until now. Not even Rouge.” Sonic leaned further, placing both his hands between them both and dipping his head lower.
“Wouldn’t you like to know something before she does?” Sonic hummed cocking his head. Shadow’s eyes kept to him, gears turning in his head. A rare opportunity to hold something over her, knowledge for knowledge.
“Fine.” Shadow grunted and stood. Sonic grinned, getting up as Shadow led him through the apartment. First through the kitchen, Sonic dug around in his fridge. But nothing in there was interesting to him. Taking him through the kitchen to a spare bedroom, but Sonic frowned and shut the door. His eyes were set on his bedroom. But on the way there he pulled open the curtain and gave a small gasp looking outside.
“Woah! This is an amazing view! Do you see this everyday?!” Sonic gaped.
Shadow shut the curtain, “Yes it’s an eyesore, anyway-”
Sonic frowned as they ascended the stairs, twisting open the door and pushing it open. Sonic pushed his way into the room first and palmed the light on. He grinned to Shadow’s bedroom, the largest bed he’d ever seen, fitted with the biggest pillows and big and fluffy comforter. Shadow rolled his eyes as he attempted to pull Sonic out but. He didn’t budge, and dragged Shadow inside.
“Come on Shadow, it’ll be fun!” Sonic grinned flopping onto his bed. He instantly purred feeling like he was cuddled by the largest cloud.
“There’s nothing of interest for you in here.” Shadow shook his head.
“That’s what you want me to think.” Sonic grinned.
And in a flash Sonic was up again, rifling through his nightstand. He grinned, pulling out a folded piece of paper, stamped with a wax seal. His wax seal. The emblem Sonic knew like the back of his hand, Shadow’s own logo on this paper. Shadow ripped it from his hand and folded it behind his back.
“That’s not for you.” Shadow snapped.
“Ah ha! There is a dirty secret! Gimmie!” Sonic grinned.
“I already told you it's not for you!”
“Ooh! Shadow the hedgehog has a crush. Who is it? And when did you get your own wax seal of your emblem?”
“Cream insisted that if I were to throw a tea party, I’d have a wax seal. So I bought my own.”
“Awe, that’s really sweet of you Shadow.”
In a blink, Sonic had the folded page again, Shadow looked to his hand then back to Sonic. He swiped at it, but Sonic ducked and popped off the seal of the letter. Shadow gripped his throat and pulled the letter away again.
“I already told you, it’s not for you.” Shadow hissed, shoving the letter in his quills. Sonic squinted at him, but his gaze softened as he patted his cheek.
“Oh… they rejected you. Awe- that’s ok. They didn’t deserve you anyway.” Sonic nodded. Shadow hissed, gripping his throat tighter.
“I’m going to kill you.” Shadow seethed.
“I’ve been rejected before, it happens.”
Shadow groaned, pulling away and digging the heels of his hands into his eyes. Hoping this was a bad dream, and when he reopened his eyes. Sonic was rifling through his nightstand once again, pulling out some cool rocks, some polaroid pictures Rouge took on her camera. Sonic stopped to one, settling on his bed. He held a soft smile on his lips taking the picture with both hands.
“Where did you get this?” Sonic asked. Shadow took slow movements to sit next to Sonic, holding in his hands, was a photo of them all. They all lied in the grass looking up at the camera, Sonic, Shadow, Rouge, Knuckles, and Tails all in a circle. Sonic pointed up at the sky as Shadow’s eyes followed him talking. Knuckles asleep as the rest of them listened to Sonic talking.
“Oh, Rouge found it a long time ago. Printed it out for me.” Shadow hummed, “It’s one of the ones I have of us all.”
“Woah! I want one, do you think she’d give me one?” Sonic asked.
“I don’t see why not.” Shadow grumbled. Sonic set it on his nightstand just under his lamp propped up for Shadow to see it when he woke up. Then Sonic rifled through more. Once his efforts came up empty, his eyes snapped to the desk at the far corner of the room.
“Haven’t you had enough digging through my things?” Shadow groaned.
“Pft- never.” Sonic grinned, “To your desk now.”
“I have sensitive intel in there, no.”
“Huh, that’s weird. Wouldn’t you keep that at your job? At your own desk there?”
Shadow gritted his teeth as Sonic went over to the desk, Shadow dragged with him as Sonic sat at his desk. Cracking his knuckles he attempted to dig through but all the drawers were locked.
“Where’s the key Shadow? You got to have deep secrets here.” Sonic huffed.
“Not telling, lets go.” Shadow grunted.
“Fine, we can play this game.”
Sonic pulled out his phone from his quills and hurried through, before pressing the screen and putting his phone to his ear. Shadow furrowed as Sonic turned to him with a smirk.
“Who are you calling?”
“Oh hey Rouge, just a quick question-”
“HEY!” Shadow barked trying to reach for the phone. Sonic evaded his reach.
“Where’s the key to Shadow’s desk?” Sonic asked. Shadow stiffened with his emerald gaze drawn to him.
“In his quills you say?” Sonic grinned, “You by chance wouldn’t know what's in here would you?”
“Rouge! If you know what's good for you! Don’t!”
“Yea I found a letter in his nightstand but he won’t let me read it.” Sonic suddenly stood, Shadow backed up slightly as Sonic hummed on the phone.
“Oh really? I see, well thank you.” Sonic hung up the phone and set it back in his quills.
“Get away from me.” Shadow growled.
“I’m getting that key Shadow.” Sonic hummed, “I want to know all your dirty little secrets.”
Shadow took another step back, when Sonic’s expression turned fiendish. In a flash Sonic had twisted Shadow’s arm around his chest, as Sonic’s conjoined arm wrapped around his shoulders. Shadow snarled as he thrashed in his grip, Sonic’s free hand dug in his quills. He pulled out the letter once more and stuck it in his quills before continuing to comb through. Shadow turned to Sonic’s arm and bit down. Hard. Sonic hissed trying to pull away, but Shadow’s free hand kept him there.
“Ok! Ok! Let go! Let go! I’ll leave it alone!” Sonic whined. Shadow growled, pulling away, Sonic unwrapped his arm from him and looked to his arm. He frowned to the blood that broke through skin and collected on peach fur. Shadow pinned his ears back, feeling now a bit bad that he bit him.
“Here.” Shadow spoke, taking his arm. Sonic eye’d him wearily, as Shadow leaned in and dragged his tongue over the wound on his arm. Then kissed it softly, the wound had healed itself and was as good as new. Dropping his arm Shadow looked up to Sonic, emerald eyes wide on him, then looked to his arm. As if he didn’t bite him at all.
“So you have magic healing kisses, alright good to know.” Sonic hummed.
“I will bite you again.” Shadow grunted.
Sonic scoffed, putting a hand to his chest, “Shadow, that’s very forward of you. But I mean your bed is right there-”
Shadow growled a sigh and pulled him out of his room. Sonic snickered behind him, as he shut off the light and shut the door. Heading down the short steps to the main floor Sonic tried to take in any and last remnants of Shadow’s apartment. When his eyes narrowed to a picture frame sitting by the front door. Shadow was jerked to the door as Sonic picked it up. His expression softened looking at the photo then to Shadow crossing his arms and looking to the floor.
“Where- where did you get this?” Sonic asked, looking down at the photo.
“Rouge gave it to me.” Shadow grumbled.
In Sonic’s hands, he looked at the photo of the two of them. Laying under a tree, the wind brushing over the two of them. Sonic resting in Shadow’s lap, and Shadow asleep leaning against the tree. His hands folded over Sonic’s head and Sonic sprawled out under him. It was last summer, Shadow came back from a big long mission. Once Sonic got the whiff that Shadow had returned, he immediately challenged him to a race. This… was taken just after.
“Rouge found us like that. Snapped a picture before I woke up and- Anyway let's go.” Shadow grunted. Sonic looked at the photo and set it back. The two headed out and the door locked behind them.
“We should go do something, dinner and a movie.” Sonic nodded.
“Why would we do that?” Shadow asked as they walked down the hall.
“When was the last time you went out to a movie?”
As Shadow was going to respond he pressed his lips in a line. Sonic hummed to Shadow’s averting gaze to the walls around them. Pressing the elevator button and they awaited for the doors to open.
“So I’m not hearing a no-” Sonic purred leaning against him.
“Didn’t you just break up with Jet?” Shadow scoffed. Sonic gritted his teeth.
“Hey, it’s my life- besides I never said it was a romantic thing- you assumed that all on your own. If you want a date all you have to do is ask.”
Shadow glared at him, “I’d rather sever my own arm.”
Sonic stepped closer to him, folding his and Shadow’s arm behind his back. Earning a low growl from the other. Sonic’s gaze studied him, watching ruby eyes falter for a brief moment. A chime and the doors opened, Sonic hummed pulling away, stepping into the elevator. Shadow with a low sigh followed after.
“So, we should see Space Chaos, I’ve heard it's good.” Sonic hummed.
“I never agreed to go with you.” Shadow cocked a brow to him.
“What else do you have to do? We should be exploring what all these colors mean,” Sonic lifted their wrists, "Besides."
Sonic loomed closer, practically pinning Shadow to the wall of the elevator.
“I’m willing to admit I’d love to spend time with you.” Sonic purred. Shadow sneered at him, putting a hand to his face and pushing him out of his personal bubble. Sonic snickered as the doors opened and Shadow pulled them out. Weaving out of the building and into the street Shadow huffed, putting a hand to his hip.
“Fine. We can go out to see this movie.” Shadow grunted.
“Twisted your arm on that one did I?” Sonic purred.
“Shut- up.” Shadow hissed.
Taking hands Sonic pulled Shadow through town, passing some friends who waved to them as they walked through. Shadow kept his head down avoiding all and any eye contact from anyone.
“Well do my eyes deceive me.”
They both groaned looking up to Jet and his friends. Sonic pinned his ears back gripping Shadow’s hand a bit tighter.
“What do you want now?” Sonic huffed.
“Is your little charade over? Jet asked, cocking his head to the side. Sonic showed their tethered wrists and gave a smug smirk.
“Yea, we're still stuck together.”
“Look, you can fool the rest of the world with your little game but I know this is just some stupid excuse for you to be stuck with him.”
“Oh my- Jet this isnt’ a game we literally and quite literally cannot get it off.”
Wave brushed past him as she looked to their wrists, Shadow looked to Sonic who gave an approving nod. Releasing their hands she took them and hummed looking at the cuffs. Eyes narrowing to the colored gems that shined in the gold. She poked and prodded the little stone pulling them together as it bounced and shifted between them.
“Hm- I’ve never seen anything like this.” Wave hummed, “How did you two get stuck?”
“It’s Rouge’s fault.” Sonic grumbled.
“Oh… well that makes more sense then.” she nodded then turned to Jet, “Sorry Jet, they are stuck together. There’s no release point, or a way to unlock it from the outside. Seems to be something- they have to do to unlock it.”
“Then unlock it.” Jet scoffed. Shadow growled, grinding his teeth.
“I’m gonna kill him.” Shadow seethed. Sonic laughed, taking his arm and pulling him away.
“Shadow, Shadow, come on. We have better things to do.”
“Murder sounds fun.” Shadow grinned to Jet, who shifted uncomfortably under Shadow’s death-like gaze. Sonic’s laugh started to become more like a giggle of worry. He might not talk Shadow out of killing him.
“Anyway, when you two are done with whatever- this is. Sonic I have a date planned out for us.”
“He’s not going anywhere with you.” Shadow snapped, dragging his feet against the pavement. Sonic at this point using all his strength to keep Shadow back.
“Shadow- come on he’s just trying to irritate you. That’s my job, come on let's go.” Sonic tugged him the other way. Shadow growled, throwing a threatening finger at him.
“Once I am unshackled- you better hide somewhere I cannot find you. I will make your death look like an accident!” Shadow barked, Sonic pulled him across the street as Shadow huffed in irritance. Taking hands again Shadow quietly grumbled to himself, Sonic watched him as his one track mind was on how he was going to kill Jet.
“Shadow.” Sonic hummed.
He abruptly stopped and ran his unrestrained hand over his face. Taking in a sharp breath and sighed out his irritation. Sonic cupped his face over his hand, emerald eyes flicking to Shadow’s who slowly opened to look at him.
“Sorry.” He muttered.
“I uh- I have some explaining to do.” Sonic hummed, “He’s just jealous of you.”
“Jealous?” Shadow scoffed. Sonic pulled his hand away to rub the back of his neck.
“He uh, doesn’t like you because I uh. Talk about you a lot. The adventures we have, the spars, the- everything. I don’t know if I do it, but I guess I treat you differently than I do with him.. Or anyone else in that matter. So. he’s going to try to piss you off as much as he can. As long as we are like-” Sonic shook their hands.
Shadow stood processing, glazing over Sonic’s form who seemed awkward standing there. He gave a soft chuckle glancing behind them and then continuing to walk their way to the movie theater.
“Why’d you laugh?” Sonic asked.
“He’s just ridiculous, and if he wants to play this game. I will participate.” Shadow hummed.
“What do you mean?”
“Perhaps you will see.”
Sonic gave up, Shadow being oddly vague he wasn’t going to get more out of him. Heading through the rest of town, the two wound up at the movie theater. Shadow pulled out his wallet buying the two tickets for this ‘Space Chaos’ and by the posters it looked interesting. Two heroes vs a monster that looked like black doom. Shadow scoffed a laugh passing the poster, oh his father would kill them all. Giving the tickets to the ticket counter, he ripped off the tabs and handed them back.
“The first theater to your left,” he said.
Shadow perked up when he felt his phone buzz. Sonic led them to the line of popcorn and candy as Shadow rummaged in his quills. Pulling out his phone it was a text from Rouge. He grumbled opening the message.
“Yea can we get a large popcorn and soda?” Sonic asked.
“Oh my! Sonic the hedgehog! Big fan!”
Shadow turned them out as he read over Rouge’s message.
‘How’s it going handsome? Do you need a little push?’
Shadow borrowing Sonic’s hand to respond, ‘No I don’t need a little push, we are at the movies.’
Rouge responded almost immediately, ‘My, my, Shadow very forward of you.’
‘We are WATCHING the movie- What do you want anyway?’
‘I’m throwing a little get together tomorrow night, got some new liquor in and would love for you and blue to join us.’
‘No.’
“Oh we gotta go Shadz, Rouge inviting us to a shin dig? I mean come on we gotta go.” Sonic spoke. Shadow perked up to him as his phone went off again, Sonic held the soda and popcorn in elbow and hand.
“No.” Shadow huffed, pulling them out of the line. Then back to his phone once more.
‘Did blue read that? I have a sense he did, so he will be doing my dirty work of convincing you to come. Ta ta!’
Shadow grumbled putting his phone away as Sonic stood looking at the line of theaters. He already forgot where they were supposed to go.
“Erm, by chance do you remember which theater?” Sonic asked.
“I wasn’t paying attention.” Shadow scoffed.
“What’s another adventure for us then?”
Sonic pulled him down the hall to the right and headed into the first theater. There were a few couples scattered throughout the sea of seats. They felt their eyes on them as Sonic led them up the steps to the far back seats.
“I didn’t know this was a romantic movie.” Shadow whispered.
“It’s not.” Sonic muttered.
“Shush!”
They both pinned their ears back sinking into the chairs, the movie started to play as Sonic settled the popcorn between them. Sonic tapped Shadow’s shoulder earning his attention. Sonic tossed up four popcorn flakes up and caught three of them. The fourth hit him in the eye and he growled rubbing his eye. Shadow rumbled a laugh reaching out and cupping his chin, pressing a soft kiss to his injured eyelid he pulled back with a soft smile. Sonic fluttered his eyes open with a soft blush on his cheeks.
The loud introduction of the movie startled them both, snapping their attention to ‘Cosmic Love 2’.
“I wasn’t aware there was a second one.” Shadow tossed popcorn in his mouth. Sonic furrowed, turning to him.
“You- You know about this movie?” Sonic asked.
“Rouge and I watched this when we-” Shadow turned to Sonic, “nevermind.”
“Then fill me in.” Sonic scooched closer so he could ask about the characters. Wrapping both arms around Shadow’s bicep, pressing his cheek to his shoulder. Shadow in slow movements rested his head on Sonic’s earning a soft giggle from the other.
There was a wedding, the main protagonist was invited and their love interest was a part of the wedding. As the groom. Shadow whispered in Sonic’s ear that in the first one they ended up dating. During this movie Cosmic had gone away to college and promised to come back, but in doing so Bonnie was engaged to be married to another. Their friends all believe it's a ruse to keep Cosmic out of the picture so Bonnie can marry off to another.
“That bride is the worst.” Sonic grumbled.
“I’m not foolish enough to let what I want slip through my fingers like that.” Shadow scoffed.
“You wouldn’t save the love of your life from being married off?”
“I’d try- depending if he listened to me or not.”
“AH HA!” Sonic snapped.
“Shush!”
“Sorry.” Sonic whispered, burying his face in his hands under Shadow’s chin. Shadow rumbled a laugh, rubbing his thumb over the back of his hand. Continuing to watch the movie, two of the friends snuck into the wedding to be brides maids and try to get intel about the bride to be. Finding out she was drinking wine and everything she shouldn’t do while pregnant. She was then caught in her own lie. Sonic was caught up in the movie now, squeezing Shadow’s hand as they rushed to tell Bonnie the news. But soon were arrested for a crime they didn’t commit. Sonic groaned leaning back against his chair. Shadow drew this gaze to him, his expression softened as the girls pleaded their case.
He would have, he would have crashed Sonic’s wedding. Or at least tired to, knowing no one could live up to the thrill of adventure like Shadow could. Or could live up to the strength to battle beside him, protect him, or keep up stamina like him. No one could love him the way Shadow did, and he held wishful thinking that he could bring that true happiness to Sonic.
“Comic no.” Sonic whined. Shadow snapped out it turning to the screen, others around them gasped as the wedding was taking place. But the doors were thrown open and Cosmic was there. Declaring their love for Bonnie. Telling of the false pregnancy and the bride having an affair with the best man. That no one would ever love him the way Cosmic did. Awes echoed in the theater as Sonic smiled, clutching onto Shadow’s arm. Tail thumping against the back rest as the movie ended with a happily ever after. Sonic laughed as he clapped while the credits rolled.
“Well- looks like we will have to watch the first one.” Sonic nodded.
“If you insist.” Shadow hummed.
“Anyway- so… who is this mystery man you’d stop a wedding for? Do you think he’d accept your undying love?”
“I never said anything about undying love.” Shadow scoffed getting up and taking the half empty popcorn bucket with them. Sonic grabbed the soda and followed after, catching up to Shadow’s quick pace. Both tossed away the rest of the drink and popcorn and headed out of the lobby.
“What’s he like? Is he nice? Does he treat you well-”
Shadow pressed a finger to his lips, “Will you- shut… up….”
Sonic batted his hand away, “You gotta give me something.”
“I don’t have to do shit.”
“Then, can we stay at your place tonight?” Sonic asked, as they exited the theater.
“No.” Shadow scoffed.
“It’s so much closer!” Sonic whined, “We could watch the first one on your big tv and big couch. It’ll be fun.”
“What about no, do you not understand?”
“Either we go to your place, or I ask more about your secret lover?”
Shadow growled in irritance, “he’s not a secret lover because he doesn’t know.”
“Oh, who is it? Is it Knuckles? Espio? Oh- you’ve been in love with Jet? Oh-”
Shadow slapped a hand over his mouth, claws digging into his peach flesh, “I will remove your skin from your flesh if you keep talking.”
Sonic nodded, Shadow released his grip and pulled them down the street. Sonic pressed his lips in a line thinking of literally anyone Shadow has hung out with. Rouge would know, but she’d never tell. His eyes fell to their cuffs, hands intertwined as Shadow took them through the city. Omega- no.. he’s considered like a little brother. Silver, well.. They haven’t seen him in a while.
“Is it Silver?” Sonic asked. Shadow turned to him with a disgusted look on his face.
“That’s foul, why would you ask me that?” Shadow scoffed.
“What do you mean?” Sonic asked, “It’s a genuine question.”
“Silver’s my son, from the far distant future.”
“Why do you know that?” Sonic squinted at him.
“I’m not supposed to, and you're not either.”
Sonic pressed his lips in a line, “So you’ve married and have a son? Is it with the person you're in love with?”
“I don’t know.” Shadow shrugged, “Nor wish to know, I’ll find out eventually.”
Fair enough. Charmy was off the table, Vector too… Infinite? Storm? No, they don’t seem like his type. Infinite maybe more so.
“Is it Infinite?” Sonic purred.
“I’m going to punch you.” Shadow growled.
“I’m not hearing a no.”
“No it’s not Infinite. Now just- shut up.”
Turning around a corner Sonic hummed thinking over everyone he could. But Shadow had to have been lying about someone on his list.
Shadow tapped his key card against the sensor and opened the door. Sonic grinned following him in, then up to the elevator. Tapping the card once more they went up to the sixth floor. Sonic stood before him batting his eyes up at Shadow.
“I thought you said no.” Sonic hummed cocking his head.
“I’m tired, you're exhausting.” Shadow grunted.
“Oh sure, sure. Mr Ulimiate lifeform getting exhausted by the blue blur.” Sonic nodded. Shadow raised his hand in a moment, then Sonic was pinned against the wall. He grinned clawing onto Shadow’s hand around his throat.
“Maybe if you're dead I will be released from your shackles.” Shadow hissed.
The elevator chimed as the doors opened to the third floor. Shadow released Sonic as the green opossum blinked at them.
“I’ll just take the next one.” They grinned sheepishly. The doors shut once more Shadow pinched the bridge of his nose as Sonic took his place in his personal bubble. With a smug and irritating grin on his lips. The doors opened once more as Sonic pulled Shadow out and down to his apartment. Tapping the door, the door unlocked and they headed inside. Sonic kicked off his shoes and pulled Shadow to the living room. Who just barely got out of his shoes. He sat on the couch and patted the spot next to him. Shadow huffed as if there was anywhere else for him to go. Sitting on the couch next to Sonic he reached for the remote and went to find the first movie. Sonic sent a quick text to Tails saying he’s ok and he wouldn’t be home tonight.
As he found it they settled in a comfortable silence, Sonic curled up against Shadow’s side. Resting on Shadow’s shoulder as the first part of the movie played. Sonic perked up halfway through the movie as he felt more weight on him than usual. Lifting his head slowly he pulled away to Shadow asleep.
Smiling softly he reached over with his feet to grab some pillows and prop them up. Lying down he gently woke Shadow, just enough to pull him against his chest. He gave a groggy sigh dropping against him and wrapping his free arm around Sonic’s waist. Nuzzling his cheek into his breast and finally settling between his legs. Sonic smiled softly combing through his quills and settling against the pillows below. When there was a crinkle against his quills. He furrowed, reaching up and dug around finding the letter. Glancing down to Shadow he felt a bit selfish, his heart belonged to another but he was stuck with him. And he had no intention to lift the binding anytime soon, to hold Shadow and be around him at every moment. It was like a dream. But he'd want Shadow to be happy. Something he hoped to bring him one day.
Flicking open the letter feeling a bit bad going through Shadow’s deepest secret. He unfolded the page, he had really pretty and formal handwriting. In red ink as well. Giving a quick glance over the letter to find a name, he’d have to. Or some kind of- his eyes narrowed to his own name.
‘I vowed I’d never love again after Maria, but my heart has other plans and with this. My heart has chosen you, Sonic the Hedgehog.’
Sonic folded the letter back up and turned his attention to Shadow. He itched to read the whole thing, he wanted to read his bleeding heart dripping on the page. The love declaration for him. But…. With careful hands, he slipped the letter into the couch. Eyeing the slumbering hedgehog on his chest, he slowly lurched forward to place a chaste kiss on his crinkled brow. Shadow’s face softened as Sonic stroked over the kissed spot. His heart swelled as he lied back against the couch pillow and a smile drew on his lips.

Notes:
It starts to get a bit juicy now ;)
Chapter Text
There was a loud knocking on the door earning the two to groan and curl tighter into each other. Shadow’s back against the couch wrapping Sonic closer to himself. Sonic curled under him nuzzling between his shoulder and chin.
“Go away.” Shadow called.
The door unlocked, having Shadow grumble cracking an eye open to the bat shaped shadow walking in. Sonic hissed to the light of the hall shining on him. She hummed, shutting the door with her foot and stepped closer with coffee in her hands.
“Aren’t you two adorable.” Rouge cooed.
“I said go away.” Shadow huffed.
“Oh you were talking to me.” Rouge hummed, shutting the door behind her, “Couldn’t hear you over how cute you both are.”
Sonic snickered under Shadow, he sat up turning to Rouge walking into the room and putting her hands on her hips.
“Come on boys, we have a party to set up.” Rouge hummed.
“No. I told you no.” Shadow growled.
“Shall I ask the voice of reason then?” she asked.
Shadow furrowed at her as she approached, kneeling down she brushed over Sonic’s cheek with her knuckles. Earning a soft purr from the other, Shadow furrowed to him. Emerald eyes fluttered open as he rolled to look at Rouge. She smiled at him when his purring slowed to a stop.
“You wanna help out with the party? It’s a small one.” She hummed. Sonic nodded as Shadow groaned looking back to her. She hummed standing as Sonic slowly sat up on his elbows. Groggy eyes fluttered around the room. He gave a disappointed whine and flopped back on the couch.
“I wanted to sleep in the bed!” Sonic whined.
“Oh I’m sure you could convince Shadow to sleep in his bed.” Rouge smirked.
“Why are you here so early anyway?” Shadow scoffed.
“Early? It’s already noon.”
Shadow sat up all the way to look at his clock, it was fifteen minutes past noon. He furrowed, glancing around, he’d never slept this late before. That was before. His eyes narrowed to Sonic stretching on the couch, spreading his fingers and toes and arching his back. Scrunching his nose and eyes as he stretched then sighed relaxing against the couch. Rouge brought over their coffees and sat with them on the couch.
“I just need a couple extra hands setting up the decorations.” She purred.
“Decorations?” Sonic asked looking down to
“It’s a party, what kind of host would I be without a little… pazazz.” She hummed. Sonic agreed, what kind of party would Rouge throw without her natural flare.
“Why can’t you let the red idiot help you?” Shadow grumbled.
“He is, he’s just. Out running around for me. Come on boys, I don’t have all day.” Rouge hummed. She stood and fluttered to the door as Sonic and Shadow climbed off the couch following after her. Pulling on their shoes and following her out, Shadow made sure the door locked as they headed to the elevator. Rouge pressed the up button, having Sonic turn to Shadow.
“I didn’t know you both lived in the same building.” Sonic cocked his head.
“We used to live together, but she had bigger- higher places to live.” Shadow spoke.
“Oh… I’m surprised you don’t live higher.”
“Oh cause tough guy here-”
“Don’t you speak another word.” Shadow snapped a threatening finger at her. Rouge held her hands up then the door opened. She stepped out as Shadow grumbled into the lip of his coffee. Sonic pursed his lips following behind Shadow, there was a long hallway with very few doors lining the halls. Once they reached the one at the end of the hall Rouge pressed her card to the door and it unlocked. Pushing open the door they headed in and Rouge kicked off her boots.
“Welcome to my humble abode Blue.” Rouge purred over her shoulder. Shadow frowned at her taking a sip from his cup, Sonic tossed off his shoes as Shadow did the same padding into the living room. Sonic whistled looking over all the expensive and already decorated living space. He peered into glass cases of high end jewelry and gemstones. Necklaces and earrings sat on little shoulder and neck mannequins in each of the shelves.
“You bought all of these?” Sonic asked.
“Bought?” Shadow rumbled.
“Bought is such a strong word… I’d like to say… given without permission.” Rouge hummed. Sonic shot her a disappointed look then back to the many shelves. Shadow followed as they eyed the giant painting on the wall, Rouge sat in practical treasures wrapped in a red fabric revealing more than Knuckles would like. But- there must have been some deal they made where she kept it up. Sonic quickly averted his gaze to some pictures on the wall.
“Awe!” Sonic tugged Shadow with him to a picture of all five of them. Rouge in the center, holding up the camera Sonic beside her sticking out his tongue. Tails peeking up from under his chin, Knuckles’ arm wrapped around Rouge’s shoulders. And Shadow behind them all, glaring heavily into the lens.
“That one is one of my favorites.” Rouge cooed, “All my favorite people in one place. Well besides Omega, and the master emerald. But another day.”
“Oh! You have a photo I want.” Sonic turned to her, Rouge crossed her arms and cocked her head.
“Oh?” She asked.
“There’s a photo in Shadow’s apartment. We are asleep under a tree. I’d like a copy.” Sonic nodded. She hummed looking around her, eyeing the walls then stepped up to a winding staircase. Sonic was about to follow her but Shadow took his hand earning his gaze.
“Trust me, you don’t want to go up there.” Shadow spoke, swirling his coffee around in his palm.
“What’s up there?” Sonic asked.
“Her bedroom.”
Sonic gave a soft oh, before his face scrunched into disgust and gave another grunted oh. They stood drinking their coffees as Rouge rummaged around up there. She fluttered out a few minutes later and landed before them. She handed over a picture frame and Sonic smiled while taking it.
“I had an extra frame laying around, figured you’d like it framed.” Rouge hummed.
He looked down to the picture of the two of them asleep under the tree. Giving a soft sigh with a smile on his lips he put it in his quills.
“So what do you need our help with?” Sonic asked.
“I need the couch to be moved. If you can push it against the window, that’d be great.” Rouge hummed pointing to the couch.
“Close the blinds.” Shadow huffed.
“Yes yes.” She sighed. Stepping up to the large windows she reached for the remote, pressing a few buttons the blinds descended from the top of the windows. As they settled over the windows the room went dark and Rouge flicked on the large chandelier above them all. Practically the same as the one in Shadow’s apartment. Maybe she had the say in the lighting of the apartment.
Shadow and Sonic stepped up to the couch and pushed it against the window with little to no struggle. Sonic sat at it peeking out from the blinds over the whole city. His tail wagged seeing how high up they were.
“Shadow! This is amazing! You should see it.” Sonic grinned over his shoulder.
“I told you, it’s an eyesore. Once you’ve seen it once, you’ve seen it a thousand times.” Shadow scoffed sitting next to him. Sonic hummed, I guess that made sense. Rouge was practically his best friend so he must be tired of seeing the city. Maybe that’s why he liked being at Sonic’s place while they were stuck like this.
“Now what?” Sonic asked.
“Decorations!”
Sonic and Shadow spent the hours they spent there helping her decorate. Sonic on Shadow’s shoulders as they strung up streamers and threw them around the high beams of the- was this even considered an apartment? But once things were decorated and Knuckles returned with snacks and all the mixers she asked for. She began to mix drinks, guests started to show up, and a dj Rouge hired to accompany the party. Once the music started blasting, the party began. Sonic and Shadow mingled with a few of Sonic’s friends. Amy had shown up and talked to them.
“Man, it was a really good movie.” Sonic nodded.
“You went and saw a rom com? Well that’s a first.” Amy hummed.
“Woah woah woah, I’ve seen plenty of rom coms before-”
“That was before Shadow was involved.”
They turned to Shadow who wasn’t paying attention to begin with. He perked up to their attention now being brought to him. He furrowed glancing between the two of them.
“What?” he huffed.
“Alright party people! Come get your drinks!” Rouge called.
And one by one they all gathered around the bar. Rouge passed out red solo cups, and then the dancing broke out. Knuckles passed out bottles of beer or cups from a keg he brought. Sonic made grabby hands to her as she passed him a cup.
“What about you?” She asked Shadow.
“Fine.” he grunted.
She grinned, passing off the solo cup, Shadow took it looking at the red liquid inside. Sonic clinked their cups, wrapping his arm around Shadow’s and took a sip. Shadow scoffed and took a sip with him. Which then became a chugging battle. Shadow pulled away just before Sonic and smirked down to him. Sonic grumbled setting his cup down and taking Shadow’s and then pulled them onto the makeshift dance floor. Taking his hands Sonic spun them around and pulled Shadow close to him. Ignoring all the eyes on them, Sonic could only focus on Shadow and the very small smile he held on his face.
Sometime later, everyone was at least some type of drunk. Rouge had gathered the couples she knew at the party for a game. Shadow sat next to Sonic as there was a hat in the middle of the circle. Sonic eager to play a game practically vibrated next to Shadow. Vanilla and Vector sat with them, Amy sat with Blaze and Knuckles sat alone as Rouge was stumbling through a crowd pulling out another couple. Shadow’s eyes glared at Espio attached to Silver’s hand. Sonic snickered into Shadow’s shoulder as they sat down with the rest of the group. Rouge stepped around with more liquor in their cups passing them around. Then a beer to Knuckles as she took the place next to him.
“Alright everyone ready?” Rouge clapped her hands together.
“What are we playing?” Sonic grinned.
“Truth or dare. With some. Twists.” Rouge hummed sitting down.
Sonic laughed, “What are we teenagers?”
“I said with some twists, refuse to tell your truth or do your dare. You drink. Easy. Ready? Uh. Silver truth or dare.” Rouge pointed to him.
“Uh. Dare.” Silver nodded.
“I dare you to kiss Espio. Right here out in the open.” Rouge purred.
Silver’s eyes slowly drew to Shadow, the look of murder was on the back of Espio’s head. Quite the pickle he had already gotten himself into. Sonic gave Silver a thumbs up before covering Shadow’s eyes and pulling him into his lap. Silver snickered, leaning over and kissing the chameleon on the lips. Shadow thrashed around earning everyone's attention prying off Sonic’s grip.
“Oh Shoot, Silver looks like it’s your turn.” Sonic snapped his fingers.
“Oh- uh. Truth or dare Blaze.” Silver turned to her.
“Truth.” She hummed.
“Is it true that you and Amy got married a few years ago and didn’t tell anyone?” Silver grinned.
Blaze glared at him and took a sip of her drink.
“Rouge truth or dare.” Blaze pointed to her.
“Daare.” she grinned.
“I dare you to give me one of your stolen goods.” Blaze smirked. Rouge frowned, she stood and turned on her heel and fluttered up to her room.
“Why have stairs if she just flies up there all the time?” Sonic asked.
“Aesthetic purposes.” Shadow swirled his drink in hand.
Rouge fluttered down and dropped a necklace in her hand. It had a large red ruby in the center clasped around it was a golden chain. Blaze hummed putting the necklace around her neck.
“Sonic, truth or dare?” Rouge snapped to him, settling back into her spot next to Knuckles.
“Dare, I’m not scared of your tricks.” Sonic scoffed.
“I dare you to play seven minutes in heaven with Shadow.” Rouge hummed. Sonic’s smug expression dropped. Shadow turned to him cocking a brow.
“What’s that?” Shadow asked.
“It’s better if he shows you.” Rouge sneered. Sonic reached for his cup when Shadow stopped him.
“He accepts your challenge.” Shadow barked.
“Uh- Shadow I don’t think you want this.” Silver spoke up.
“Oh- I think he does.”
Rouge got up taking a sip of her drink, Sonic sighed, getting up and pulling Shadow with him. Opening the closet by the front door, Shadow looked to her as her lips pulled into a shit eating grin.
“After you.” She purred.
Sonic and Shadow climbed in and Rouge shut the door behind them. Then locked the door, making sure they didn’t get out. Shadow shook his head shuffling in his quills and pulled out his chaos emerald then resettled it back into place. Sonic barked a laugh as they sat on separate sides of the closet. Hands lied between them, Shadow looked around to the stuff she had in the closet then turned to Sonic.
“How do you play this?” Shadow asked.
“We sit here for seven minutes, undisturbed and we don’t know how long the seven minutes are.” Sonic hummed, “Usually makeout sessions happen, or a lot of first kisses. But since this is Rouge’s party- I doubt anyone’s gonna do anything that calm.”
“Damn it.” Shadow grunted, “She knew I wouldn’t know.”
“It’s ok, I get to hang out with you without extra eyes on us.” Sonic hummed.
“You're drunk.” Shadow scoffed.
“Kinda, I’ve been pacing myself this time.”
Shadow glanced at him then took Sonic’s hand and pulled him closer. Sonic rested his head on Shadow’s shoulder drawing his free hand up the inner of Shadow’s arm.
“I could sit here and dirty talk you the whole time.” Sonic grinned.
“I don’t know what that is.” Shadow turned to him. Sonic hummed, reaching up and pulling Shadow closer to him. Breath rolling over tan lips as Sonic smirked against him.
“There is something so damn hot about you pinning me down with my wrists.” Sonic breathed. Sonic’s hand felt hot as he pulled away slightly, he was met with a dark glowing red gaze. Shadow was blushing under his hand, Sonic pulled his hand away as if he bit him.
“I- Wait- don’t kill me.” Sonic slowly scooted back. Shadow gripped his wrist and pulled him back.
“Do it again.” Shadow growled. Sonic blinked, Shadow pulled him into his lap. Intense ruby eyes on him dim glow in them. Sonic hummed leaning closer and wrapped his arm around his shoulders dipping his head lower.
“I like the way you're looking at me, is that how you look at me when you got me pinned down? Squirming underneath you as I beg for my life.” Sonic purred against his lips. There was a broken whine in response, Shadow’s arm wrapped tighter around his hips. Brushing their lips together briefly, Sonic's lips pulled into a subtle smirk.
“Oh? Got something you want, tough guy?” Sonic grinned.
“I won’t beg.” Shadow snarled.
“I didn’t ask you to, but I kind of like the way you refuse to. Maybe I will.”
Shadow snarled at him, “Sonic.”
“Shadow, what do you want, baby? I can give you anything you want.”
“You are walking on thin ice, hedgehog.”
“Go animalistic my dear, ravenish me like the ultimate lifeform you are. I’d like to see you break me.”
Shadow gripped his chest and pulled him into a kiss. Snarling against his lips, nipping at his bottom lip earning a giggle from the cobalt hedgehog wrapped around him. He ran his tongue over the crease of Sonic’s lips. Who opened wide to have the other run his tongue over his wet muscle. Arms wrapped around the other tighter pressing their bodies flush, earning a soft moan from peach lips. This… this put Shadow into overdrive. He wanted more.
Pulling apart he kissed his cheek and trailed down to his neck. Sonic gave huffs into the closet as Shadow kissed his neck, grazing his teeth over flesh drawing out a shuddered moan. Drawing his nails up his back and nibbling at his neck had Sonic arch his back and moan a bit louder. Shadow pulled back breathing hot against his neck, glowing eyes trailed up to emerald looking down to him.
“Good boy.” Shadow purred against his neck, he kissed over his shoulders and down his chest. Pulling out more of the lewd noises Sonic mewed into the closet. He pulled his hand away to clamp down on his mouth. Shadow rumbled against his chest kissing and suckling over fur.
In a swift movement the door was thrown open and Rouge flashed her camera at them. Both scrambling off each other, Shadow snarled, turning his attention to Rouge. She stood waving the polaroid in the air next to her.
“My my, what do I have here?” Rouge grinned. Shadow reached into his quills pulling out his emerald.
“Chaos control.” Shadow grunted.
In a green flash, they landed on Shadow’s bed. Sonic groaned, flopping into the bedding, Shadow turned to Sonic blindly, setting the emerald on the nightstand. He reached over tucking away some stray quills. He leaned over, pressing a soft kiss to his temple. Hoping that’ll settle his stomach.
“I hate when you do that.” Sonic groaned. Shadow chuckled curling up around Sonic, sliding his arm under his neck and wrapping an arm around his middle. Sonic gave an approving sigh, settling against the large plush around them.
“Goodnight my dear.” Shadow whispered. Sonic hummed already letting sleep wash over him.
