Chapter 1: Is this Hell?
Chapter Text
Peter was drowning. His lungs hurt. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't find the surface. Peter reached out, scrambling for anything to hold onto. Peter couldn't breathe. Peter passed out.
Peter breathed in again regaining consciousness. He still couldn't breathe. He felt stone underneath him. Peter pushed up hoping to get to some safety but before he could he lost consciousness again.
Peter woke again with no air in his lungs and when he opened his eyes all he saw was green. Peter took the precious moments he had to swim forward on the sloped rock he felt his body resting against. Peter couldn't keep himself conscious.
Peter woke still drowning but with direction as he swam as fast as his body would take him upward. Peter went through bouts of consciousness just trying to find the surface and when he finally did find the surface he lost consciousness again.
Peter woke up on his side and coughing up the green water that was in his lungs. Peter breathed in and coughed some more but the fact that he was coughing made him chuckle in relief.
He was breathing. He wasn't going to pass out again.
As Peter coughed his lungs out and vomited out all the green water he realized he should be dead.
How is he not dead? Is he dead? Is this hell?
Peter caught his breath then looked around the dark dingy cave he was in and then looked back at the green bubbling water.
Okay? Cave, dark, glowing green water. This could still be hell.
Peter looked around for anything else around him and just found rock.
Hell sucks.
Peter's stomach grumbled in hunger and winced in pain.
Hunger pains, great.
"Ow, am I permanently hungry? Hell sucks." Peter groaned out then put a hand over his mouth.
Was that his voice? Did hell de-age him?!
"Of course, I can't just be eighteen. What am I wearing?" Peter asked, examining his clothes. His clothes were baggy on him. He had a t-shirt, and jeans on.
This is the outfit he must have died in.
"Wait, how did I die?" Peter asked, not remembering how he got here. Peter closed his eyes in pain as his head was fuzzy and he couldn't seem to remember.
"I hope I didn't have an embarrassing death." Peter said then froze as he heard something.
Cars. Cars? Were there cars in hell?
"Karen, are you there?" Peter hesitantly called out wondering if his AI somehow followed him to the afterlife. Karen didn't answer and Peter sighed sadly. Peter then scowled as he realized if he was in hell he didn't want to spend an eternity in this stupid cave.
"There may be demons and hell out there but no way am I spending the rest of eternity in here." Peter said, trying to dig himself out. Peter got some rocks loose and froze as he got the first look on the outside of his cave.
"A sewer. A sewer in hell. Why does hell need a sewer?" Peter asked himself then went silent as he saw something pass by his cave. It was huge and scaly.
Right, demons.
Peter waited until he heard the creature walk away to start quietly and slowly move rocks. Peter carefully poked his head out of his cave then tensed as he saw the creature standing ten feet away from him. Peter quickly retreated back into his hole and started putting up the rocks frantically as he could hear the creature coming closer.
"Hey, I'm not going to eat you kid." The creature said and Peter didn't believe him for a second.
"S-Stay away from me!" Peter yelped as the creature looked through the hole that Peter dug out. Peter started digging on the other side of the cave but the rocks were too big and wouldn't move.
"It's okay. I didn't mean to scare you. My name is Waylon. I know I look scary. I don't want to hurt you." Waylon tried speaking to him calmly. Peter shook in fear not trusting him.
"I'm sorry for trying to escape. I'll stay in the cave. I promise." Peter said realized he was never meant to leave his cave.
Waylon is his guard. To make sure he doesn't escape. He doesn't want to be tortured or punished. This is hell. Of course he wasn't supposed to leave!
"It's okay to come out. I won't hurt you." Waylon said and Peter whimpered in fear.
"This is a trick. You're just going to stab me in the back. That's what demons do right? Lure you in with a false sense of security?" Peter asked, not ready to face the consequences of his actions.
"Demon? I'm not a demon." Waylon said and Peter scowled.
"Th-that's exactly what a demon would say! And now I'm talking back to a demon. What did I do to end up in hell?" Peter asked himself, starting to cry.
"Hell?" Waylon sounded confused. "Kid this isn't hell. You're not dead." Waylon said and Peter froze.
"What?" Peter asked not sure if he should trust him.
"You're not dead. What's the last thing you remember?" Waylon asked gently, still not trying to remove the rocks Peter put up.
"I... I was fighting. There was a big statue. The sky was cracking. I don't remember." Peter said, still struggling to remember anything about his past.
"Do you know your name?" Waylon asked and Peter nodded. Peter then realized Waylon couldn't see him.
"I know my name." Peter said, shivering.
"Do you know how you ended up in that cave?" Waylon asked next.
"No." Peter said and reevaluated his situation.
He's in a cave. Karen isn't here with him. He's younger so something magical must have happened. Waylon hasn't hurt him yet. So maybe Waylon isn't a demon? Maybe this isn't hell?
"Are you really not a demon?" Peter asked, gazing at the small hole he hasn't patched up.
"I'm not a demon, I promise. I may look scary but I'm human, relatively." Waylon said and Peter shakily stood and moved one rock to get a better look at Waylon. Waylon was sitting a few feet away from his cave. He looked more like a crocodile than a person.
"I won't hurt you. It's okay to come out." Waylon said and Peter flinched back. Peter then winced as his stomach grumbled again.
"Are you hungry?" Waylon asked.
"Yes, but this is hell. So aren't we hungry all the time?" Peter asked cautiously.
"No, this isn't hell. I'll be back with some food. Don't move." Waylon said and Peter nodded, backing away from the hole again.
This could be his opportunity to escape. Leave the sewers. Get out of his cave prison. What if it's worse out there though? What if he gets out and it is hell. Firey, mean, scary, hell.
Peter decided to stay put, not sure if his warden was going to hunt him down for leaving. Peter thought about what Waylon said and still felt doubtful. He died. He knows he died. He drowned. This must be hell. It definitely wasn't heaven.
What happened before he drowned though? What was his life like? Did he do something to deserve this? Did he kill someone?
Peter closed his eyes as flashes of images came back to him. Someone bloody, dying right in front of him. The feeling of triumph for that someone dying.
Was he a supervillain? Did he kill someone on purpose? He doesn't feel like a bad person? Why would he be happy that person died though? He didn't want to be a supervillain.
Peter flinched as he heard the rocks move and backed up to the wall as Waylon reached his clawed hand in the cave with something in his claws.
"I know it's not much. It was the best I could get on short notice." Waylon said and Peter noticed the paper bag in Waylon's claws.
"It's okay to take it." Waylon encouraged him. Peter hesitantly approached and snatched the bag away from him. Waylon took his claw back and put some of the rocks back up as Peter stared at him in fear.
"It's okay, you can eat." Waylon said, watching him. Peter hesitantly looked away from him and read the bag.
Bat Burger. A burger joint in hell?
Peter opened the bag expecting to find that his fries and burger were flavorless or charred but was surprised to find that it was just a simple fast food burger with salted fries.
"Is this a trick?" Peter asked, not trusting it.
"It's not a trick. It's just food." Waylon said and Peter hesitated to eat the food but once he started he couldn't stop. He was hungrier than he thought he was and finished the meal actually feeling a bit better.
"Do you have more?" Peter asked, peeking out of his cave excitedly.
"Unfortunately not. I promise I'll get you more when I can." Waylon said, smiling at him. Peter retreated back into his cave leaving the small hole open so Waylon could still see him if he wanted to.
"I promise this isn't hell kid. I'll take care of you the best I can." Waylon promised and Peter shivered in fear.
A promise from a demon. Maybe he wasn't a demon but just another person that ended up in hell? Peter still didn't trust him and was content to just stay in his little cave of hell where at least he knew he was safe from other demons.
"I'll be right back, hopefully with more food." Waylon said and Peter listened to him leave. Peter listened to the cars and the running water in the sewer. Peter then realized that wasn't all he heard.
He heard gunshots, people screaming and fighting, explosions. "Not hell" sure sounds a lot like hell. Waylon was nice to him though. Waylon gave him food that actually satisfied him. Waylon promised this wasn't hell.
Waylon is still a crocodile person and the first thing he saw when leaving his cave. Why would Waylon be outside of his cave if he wasn't expecting him to be there? Why would Waylon feed him?
Peter hasn't seen any other creatures or humans here. He hasn't ventured out of his cave and it would make sense that no one would visit the sewers but still. He has no idea what it's like out there. Peter doesn't want to know what's out there.
Peter looked at the hole in his cave and couldn't decide if he was curious enough to actually leave his cave. Peter shook his head not wanting to leave and tried once again to remember what happened to him. Peter closed his eyes as he tried to recall what happened.
He remembers a man in a red cloak. He was holding up the sky. A girl and a boy, his friends? Saying a tearful goodbye. Then everything went green.
Peter opened his eyes as he couldn't remember anything else and his head hurt. Peter then flinched as he heard a huge thump outside of his cave. Peter's curiosity got the best of him as he peeked out of his cave.
"I can't let you terrorize Gotham, Killer Croc." A dark figure with what looked like pointed horns on it's head said.
"I wasn't terrorizing anyone! I was just trying to get some food, Bat!" Waylon yelled back, attacking the bat demon.
"You don't eat normal food. Who is this for?" The bat demon questioned Waylon.
"None of your business. Now get out of here!" Waylon continued to fight the bat demon. Peter watched then quickly hid back inside his cave when he saw the bat demon turn his way.
"Who was that?" The bat demon asked Waylon.
"No one, get out of here!" Waylon yelled.
Peter hid in the darkest part of his cave trying to stay as silent as possible. He briefly thought of hiding in the green water but shivered at the memory of drowning and decided not to. He could no longer see them but he could hear them fighting.
"Who do you have hostage?" The bat demon questioned angrily.
"No one! Stay away from him!" Waylon yelled. Peter flinched as he heard a crash then froze as he saw the bat demon peek into his cave.
"A kid?" The bat demon said spotting him then got yanked back by a huge claw.
"I said, stay away from him." Waylon growled. Peter flinched as he heard more fighting and then tensed as everything went quiet.
Who won? His warden or the bat demon?
Peter scrambled back against the wall as a black hand moved the rocks that were in place and opened up his cave.
"S-Stay away from me!" Peter yelped as he realized the bat demon won and was trying to get into his cave.
"I don't want to hurt you. Can you tell me your name?" Bat demon asked, his voice a lot softer now.
"No! Stay away bat demon!" Peter yelled, throwing a rock at him. The rock bounced off of the bat demon and Peter shivered.
"I'm not a demon. I'm Batman. I'm here to help." Batman said and Peter threw another rock at him. This time the rock lodged into his shoulder and Batman winced.
"Okay, it's okay. You're safe now. I won't hurt you." Batman said backing up. Peter relaxed a small bit but didn't move.
"What did you do to Waylon?" Peter asked, trusting Waylon more than this new demon.
"I just knocked him out. He's alive." Batman reassured him.
"He said he'd get me more food." Peter said, watching Batman carefully.
"He did. I'm sorry. He's a criminal though. He can't provide for you." Batman said and Peter scowled.
"Why does that matter, demon!" Peter yelled hoping he wasn't going to be taken or tortured.
"I'm not a demon. Why do you think I'm a demon?" Batman asked him.
"Because I died! I woke up here so this must be hell." Peter said, frowning.
"And why do you think you are in hell?" Batman asked.
"Because I remember someone dying and I watched them die. I think it was my fault they died. I was happy they died. I'm a killer." Peter whimpered, hating the idea of actually being a killer.
"Who did you kill?" Batman asked seriously.
"I don't remember. Are you a killer too?" Peter asked and Batman sighed.
"No, I... not on purpose. Do you regret killing them?" Batman asked gently.
"I don't know. I don't even remember who they were." Peter said, still not remembering what happened.
"Do you know your name?" Batman asked him.
"Yeah, but I'm not telling you." Peter snapped at him.
"Do you know who the current president is?" Batman asked and Peter scowled at him.
"Why does that matter?" Peter asked in confusion.
"Just answer the question." Batman demanded.
"No. I don't keep up with politics, especially not in hell." Peter huffed.
"This isn't hell, kid. I know you died but that green pit over there brought you back to life. You're alive." Batman said and Peter glanced at the green pit in surprise.
"So... I'm really alive?" Peter questioned, still doubtful.
"Yes you're really alive." Batman reassured him. Peter looked at him doubtfully.
"I'm not leaving this cave. Hell or not it sounds bad out there. I'm staying here." Peter said too scared to venture out into whatever this place was.
"Okay, are you injured?" Batman asked him worriedly.
"I don't think so. Nothing hurts." Peter said actually surprised that, besides drowning and hunger pains, he didn't feel any pain at all.
"Can you stand?" Batman asked and Peter nodded, shakily doing so.
"How old are you?" Batman asked. Peter didn't answer.
He could say he was eighteen but then Batman might call him a liar. Peter does know he is younger than he was but he doesn't know how young. Then again why does the bat demon want his age?
"Why should I tell you?" Peter asked, getting in a defensive stance.
"Calm down, I just want to get to know you. Do you know where your parents are?"
"They're dead. Probably in heaven. With Ben and Aunt May, and Natasha and Tony. Why am I the only one to go to hell?" Peter asked, trying not to cry.
"It's going to be okay. You're alive. You're not in hell." Bruce tried to comfort him, stepping forward.
"Leave me alone!" Peter yelled out in fear as the bat demon got closer. Batman immediately put his hands up and backed away.
"It's okay, I'm not near you. It's okay." Batman tried to calm him and Peter only relaxed a bit.
"Why are you so scared of me?" Batman asked and Peter huffed.
"Because you're a demon." Peter said like it was obvious.
"And what about Waylon? Is he a demon?" Batman asked.
"He's my warden. He gave me food. I think he might be another person like me who just ended up in hell." Peter said not sure of anything anymore.
"You think he's keeping you prisoner here?" Batman guessed. Peter just nodded and Batman went quiet in thought. Batman then walked away and back towards the entrance to the sewers. Peter watched him carefully, peeking his head out of his cave. Batman glanced at him then climbed out of the sewers.
Peter waited a few seconds then observed Waylon who was still unconscious. Peter felt bad for him and hesitantly moved more rocks so he could crawl out of his cave. As he worked he paused when Waylon grumbled awake.
"Kid, are you still here?" Waylon asked as he sat up.
"Yes." Peter answered, hiding back in his cave. Waylon walked over to his cave entrance then observed him.
"Did Batman hurt you?" Waylon asked. Peter shook his head and Waylon smiled.
"Good. I got you more food. Let's see if any of it survived." Waylon walked down the tunnel some and Peter waited patiently. Waylon came back and gently put down the food just inside Peter's cave.
"There you go. Some of it survived." Waylon said and Peter didn't move until Waylon backed away. Peter ate the destroyed burger and fries then froze when Waylon stepped closer to him.
"I'm not going to hurt you. I'm just going to sit here." Waylon sat in front of him a few feet away and Peter watched him closely then slowly went back to eating.
"You look exhausted. I'll get some soft stuff for you to lie on." Waylon left again and Peter finished his food in peace. Peter did feel exhausted. Peter rested against the wall of his cave and found himself drifting off to sleep.
Peter dreamt of May's last moments and Tony's. Wanting to kill Goblin. Beck messing with him. Beck making him stumble onto train tracks. Getting hit by a train. Waking up in a cell. The universe falling apart. The sky cracking apart. A yell and a kiss to never forget.
When Peter woke he found himself covered in a soft blanket and his head on a pillow. Memories of Peter's dream faded as he sat up in confusion.
Where was he again?
Peter looked around then froze as he saw Waylon just outside his cave, guarding it.
Right, maybe hell.
Chapter 2: Out of the Cave
Chapter Text
When Bruce beat up Killer Croc for terrorizing the city he didn't expect to find a kid. A kid that died and been through the pits no less. What concerned him the most about this situation was that the kid seemed to have some type of amnesia.
Most people and kids whenever they saw him they looked at him in awe or saw him as a hero. This kid though didn't even recognize him. The kid called him a demon and was convinced he somehow ended up in hell. Which was ridiculous, the kid looked no older than eight. How would an orphaned eight year old end up in hell?
Bruce pushed that thought aside to focus on his plan. He needed to convince the kid he's not in hell. He can't do that as Batman and leaving Waylon with the kid probably wasn't good to convince the kid that this wasn't hell. He knows Waylon will protect the kid though.
The first thing he did was tell his kids to leave Killer Croc alone no matter what he did. If Waylon is going to protect the kid he doesn't need his kids trying to interfere or throw Waylon in jail.
"Why do we need to leave Killer Croc alone?" Dick questioned him angrily, confronting him on a rooftop.
"He's protecting a kid." Bruce tried to explain.
"A kid?! Why aren't we trying to save that kid?!" Dick asked angrily.
"He's been through the pits and believes he's in hell." Bruce explained shortly.
"I don't see a reason why we aren't saving him." Dick growled.
"He's scared out of his mind and he has amnesia. He thought I was a demon when he saw me." Bruce huffed angrily.
"Okay, so what's the plan?" Dick asked, still irritated.
"First we need to convince Killer Croc to let the kid go. That's why I can't have you attacking him." Bruce said and Dick huffed.
"Why don't we just beat up Waylon and take the kid?" Dick asked.
"That didn't work. The kid refused to come out of his cave and already got attached to Waylon." Bruce pointed out.
"Are you bleeding?" Dick asked, looking at his shoulder.
"Yes. The kid threw a stone at me. He's strong. I suspect it's a side effect of the pits." Bruce said, shifting uncomfortably.
"Okay, how do we get Waylon to let the kid go?" Dick asked wondering how they were going to save this kid.
"I need you to go down there as a police officer and talk to Wyalon. Maybe you can talk him into giving the kid up." Bruce said and Dick sighed.
"Fine, but you're being my back up and will knock him out if he tries attacking me." Dick said glaring at Bruce.
"Deal." Bruce said and they started on their plan.
"You know it's going to be weird having you stalk me while I'm on duty. Think of the rumors. Batman stalks one of Gotham's finest." Dick chuckled and Bruce rolled his eyes.
"They're going to think I actually did something wrong this time." Dick chuckled as they got to his apartment.
"Yeah, that or they'll think I'm losing my touch." Bruce joked as Dick changed into his police uniform.
"Or worse they'll think you're becoming a villain." Dick laughed.
"Let's get going." Bruce chuckled and went to the rooftops as Dick went on foot.
When they got in the sewers Bruce watched from a distance
~~~~~~
Peter still wasn't sure that this place wasn't hell but Waylon was nice to him. Waylon gave him a blanket, pillow, and food. Peter was so glad his warden was nice to him. Maybe this place isn't hell?
Some noise caught Wyalon's attention and Peter tensed up.
Was the bat demon back again?
"Stay here." Waylon said walking towards the noise and Peter curled up in his blanket, hiding under it.
"I have reports that there's a missing kid down here." A light voice said and Peter was curious but scared.
That didn't sound like the bat demon.
"Well your reports are wrong. Stay away pig." Waylon growled and Peter shakily moved closer to the cave entrance.
"Batman sent me." The pig demon said. Peter froze then hurriedly hid back under his blanket.
"I'm not giving him up." Waylon growled angrily.
"You must realize that you can't provide for him. He needs a real home, not this sewer." The pig demon tried to reason. To Peter's horror Waylon sighed, sounding defeated.
"Make sure he gets in a good home." Waylon said and walked back to Peter's cave. Peter shook in fear then froze when he saw the demon next to him.
This demon wasn't a demon at all. The demon looked like an actual person. An actual cop. Was this person not a demon? Or a demon in disguise?
"Hello little one. My name is Richard. What's your name?" Richard introduced himself, smiling at him. Peter frowned at his condescending tone and backed himself up against the far wall.
"It's okay, Peter. Go with him." Waylon said and Peter looked at Waylon sadly.
"I'm not going to hurt you. Let's get you out of here." Richard walked towards him and offered a hand. Peter looked at him in distrust.
"If he hurts you I'll kill him." Waylon said and Peter nodded, hesitantly standing and taking Richard's hand. Richard led him out of his cave and to a ladder.
"Do you think you can climb this?" Richard asked and Peter nodded but didn't move.
"Do you want me to go first? Show you that it's safe?" Richard asked and Peter nodded. Richard climbed up the ladder and Peter looked towards Waylon.
"It's okay kid. If anyone tries hurting you up there just come back down and I'll make sure you're safe." Waylon said, approaching him. Peter hugged him goodbye and Waylon picked him up.
"I'm going to miss you kid. Time to go." Waylon helped him up onto the ladder and Peter looked down at him in sadness.
"It's okay, go on." Waylon said and Peter reluctantly made his way up the ladder. When he got to the top Richard picked him up. Peter looked around his surroundings and was surprised to find himself in a city.
The city was certainly gloomy and it was raining but it wasn't the fiery pits of hell Peter expected. Peter was also surprised to find it full of people. Just regular human beings. A cop car sped by with it's sirens on and Peter wondered once again if this wasn't really hell.
Peter then heard the gunshots and screams. Peter spotted the bat demon on the rooftop and started to shake. Richard put him down in the passenger seat of his cop car and Peter quickly closed the door before the bat demon could get him.
This is hell. This is definitely hell.
Richard got in beside him and noticed his shivering.
"What's wrong buddy?" Richard asked, buckling him in.
"The bat demon is watching us." Peter whispered, his spider sense buzzing.
"The Bat is not a demon. He may look scary but it's just a costume. It's armor and nothing more." Richard said and Peter whimpered, not comforted at all.
"You said the bat demon sent you. Are you going to give me to him?!" Peter asked in fear.
"No, no, no, of course not. This isn't hell, kid. You're in Gotham. It's a city in New Jersey." Richard said and Peter froze.
New Jersey? How the hell did he end up in New Jersey?
"How close is New York?" Peter asked, wondering if he somehow crossed state lines and just didn't realize it.
"About two hours away. Why? Is that where you're from?" Richard asked and Peter looked at him in confusion.
"Maybe. I think... I don't remember." Peter said in uncertainty. Everytime he tries to remember anything all he can bring up are fuzzy memories and his head starts hurting.
"How old are you?" Richard asked him.
"I'm eight- mmm. Mhm." Peter said almost saying eighteen but realizing that is definitely not true anymore.
"Do you remember your name?" Richard asked him.
"Peter Parker... was there really a missing persons report for me?" Peter asked curiously.
"No. I did hear you were down there and needed saving though." Richard said and for some reason Richard's answer didn't surprise Peter.
"Where are we going?" Peter asked looking out his window.
"I'm going to take you down to the station where I can process you and hopefully find out where you're really from." Richard said and Peter shifted uncomfortably.
"Don't worry Peter. I'm just going to ask for your fingerprints and maybe take a photo, if you're okay with that?" Richard said and Peter looked down.
"I guess." Peter grumbled, knowing he didn't really have a choice.
"I'm just trying to help you, Peter. I'll find out who you were." Richard said and Peter didn't believe him.
"What's your last name?" Peter asked, looking at Richard in suspicion.
"Grayson. I used to be a part of the circus when I was a kid." Richard said and Peter frowned.
Peter still isn't convinced Richard isn't some type of demon in disguise.
"What's with that look? Do I have something on my face?" Richard tried to joke.
"Demon." Peter huffed, crossing his arms.
"I'm not a demon either, kid." Richard said and Peter didn't believe him for a second. Peter instead looked out the window and stayed silent the rest of the ride to the station.
Once they arrived Peter unbuckled himself and got out of the car. The police station was intimidating and Peter stared up at it wondering if he should run.
Just go back to his cave and hide. This was all happening too fast. He didn't want to be here.
"Come on kid, let's head inside." Richard offered his hand and Peter reluctantly took it.
They got into the station and Peter hated the looks he got from the other officers. They looked at him in pity, like he was just some charity case.
Peter let Richard take his fingerprints and photo then sat down at Richard's desk. Richard's desk was clean and organized. Peter saw Richard's nameplate and was slightly surprised by Richard's full name.
"Richard "Dick" Grayson-Wayne." Was Grayson adopted? Married? Did people actually call him Dick?
"I see you brought in a stray. Where'd you find him?" A man with a white strip in his hair asked Richard. Richard was sitting at his desk trying to find out who Peter was using his computer. The man didn't look like an officer and was taller than Richard. Peter looked up at him in fear.
This man is definitely a demon.
"The sewers, why are you here Jason?" Richard asked, obviously knowing this other demon.
"The sewers? What was this little kid doing there?" Jason asked, looking at Peter. Peter glared at him ready to fight him if need be.
"Recently revived if you couldn't tell. Also he has amnesia. Be kind." Richard said glaring at Jason.
"Got the revived thing, amnesia? He have any weapons on him?" Jason asked, looking at Peter skeptically.
"Stay away from me, demon." Peter snapped at him.
"Demon? Dick, explanation?" Jason asked.
Huh, so people do call him Dick.
"He was just revived and Killer Croc is the first thing he saw." Dick explained shortly.
"Makes sense. Any progress on his identity?" Jason asked crouching down to look Peter in the eyes. Peter scowled at him.
"Nothing so far. Got any theories?" Dick asked.
"Could be from the LOA. He hasn't attacked anyone has he?" Jason asked, standing up straight again. Peter huffed, offended.
"Not yet. He did mention New York though. I think that's where he was... you know." Dick said and Jason nodded.
Peter hated this. He just wants to go back to his cave and live the rest of his eternity with Waylon. They're talking about him like he's not even here!
"Got a name kid?" Jason addressed him directly and Peter looked at him in surprise.
"No." Peter said, refusing to give this demon his name.
"His name is Peter Parker. He's not on any database so I'm thinking he grew up in the League." Dick said and Peter scowled at him.
"Possible, any idea what caused his amnesia?" Jason asked, putting his hand in Peter's hair. Peter tried to push his arm away but failed as he wasn't using any of his real strength.
"Get off." Peter said, trying to push his hand away with only a small bit of force.
"No obvious bumps or cuts." Jason said, taking his hand back. Peter stuck his tongue out at him in anger. Jason just laughed.
"Do you think the pits healed him already but couldn't fix the damage to his brain?" Dick asked as Peter glared at Jason angrily, green creeping into his vision.
"Possibly. Breathe, kid. In... out." Jason said, looking down at Peter. Peter reluctantly listened to him and the green went away.
"And what happens when he does remember?" Jason asked Dick.
"That's why I'll be keeping him at my place for a while." Dick said and Peter tensed.
"W-Why would I stay with you?" Peter stuttered out angrily.
"Yeah, why not stay with me? I was with the league for a time and I've had experience with dying and coming back." Jason said and Peter looked at Jason in confusion.
Jason isn't a demon? Jason's actually a human?
"Okay, fine. But you have to keep him safe and don't let him know about... you know what." Dick said glaring at Jason.
You know what? What kind of innuendo was that? What don't they want him knowing about?
"I won't. I promise. Do you have everything you need from him?" Jason asked, putting a hand on Peter's shoulder. Peter tensed up glaring at him.
"For now. You're free to go." Dick said and Jason smiled then offered his hand to Peter.
"Ready to go kid?" Jason asked and Peter scowled at him.
"Why should I trust you?" Peter asked skeptically.
"Because I've been through the pits as well." Jason said, grabbing a mirror from one of Dick's drawers and pointing it at Peter. Peter froze when he saw his reflection.
Peter wasn't looking at his eight year old self but his ten year old self. He had a white streak in his hair just like Jason. His eyes were even green as Jason's.
"Okay." Peter said, accepting the fact that Jason probably wasn't a demon and was actually like him. Jason offered his hand again and Peter took it. Jason led him out of the precinct then to a motorcycle.
Jason handed him a helmet that was too big on him. Peter got it on and got on the back of the motorcycle.
"No kid, you are up front. The wind would tear you to shreds." Jason said and Peter hesitantly moved. Jason got on behind him and covered him like a protective shield. Jason helped Peter know where to put his feet and hands then Jason started the motorcycle. Peter flinched and Jason chuckled.
"It's okay, I'll be driving. Just hold on and try to follow my movements." Jason said and Peter nodded. Jason started going forward and Peter tried to keep himself calm.
Peter has never ridden a motorcycle before. Or at least he doesn't think he did. Peter did his best not to crush Jason's motorcycle as they rode through the city.
Once they got to Jason's apartment Peter had to catch his breath. Riding a motorcycle was so scary but thrilling. Jason helped him take off his helmet then led him inside.
"Do you have food?" Peter asked as they walked inside the building.
"I do. I also cook." Jason said and Peter smiled.
"Are you any good at it?" Peter asked.
"I am an amazing cook. Just you wait." Jason said and Peter followed him feeling a lot safer.
This may be hell but Jason is like him. Jason is human.
"So how old are you?" Peter asked curiously.
"Twenty one, you?" Jason asked.
"I'm eighteen." Peter said proudly.
"Eighteen? Are you sure about that bud?" Jason chuckled and Peter looked at him in confusion.
"I didn't forget my age. I just graduated high school." Peter insisted.
"Ha! Okay kid. Whatever you say." Jason ruffled his hair and Peter frowned. Peter looked down at his small hands, upset.
Peter thought that they went through the same thing? Did Jason not get de-aged when he died?
Peter huffed as he realized Jason did look his age and wasn't de-aged.
Was Jason ever going to believe him? Peter has to at least try to make Jason believe him.
"Jason, I am eighteen. I was de-aged when I died." Peter said determinedly.
"De-aged... and how did you die again?" Jason asked him.
"I... I drowned." Peter said, shivering.
"I got beaten then blown up." Jason said and Peter looked at him in surprise and pity.
"You don't get to pity me. Have any idea what happened before you died?" Jason asked him.
"I... the sky was cracking." Peter said, still struggling to remember the details.
"The sky was cracking. Good one kid. Tell me when you actually remember what happened." Jason said, ruffling his hair. Peter huffed, glaring at him.
"The sky was cracking! There was a man in a red cloak holding up the sky. He's the one who killed me!" Peter yelled out furiously then froze in confusion.
The man in the red cloak killed him? Did he die before he drowned? Peter didn't feel angry at the red cloaked man. Why did he die?
"Do you have a name for the red cloaked man?" Jason asked him.
"No... He... I... I don't remember what- or why..." Peter trailed off trying to remember but his thoughts got fuzzy.
"Okay kid. Let's talk more about this man in a red cloak." Jason said, picking him up.
"Stop picking me up." Peter scowled at him. Jason ignored him and put him down on the counter.
"Close your eyes." Jason said and Peter glared at him intensely. "I'm trying to help you. Close your eyes." Jason commanded him again and Peter huffed then reluctantly closed his eyes.
"Now think back to the moment right before your death. What were you doing?" Jason asked him.
"I was fighting." Peter said, starting to remember what happened.
"Who were you fighting? Was it the man in a red cloak?" Jason asked.
"I... I don't know. We were at a statue though a big one. The sky is cracking." Peter whimpered.
"What else do you see?" Jason asked him.
"There was this girl and a boy. I think they were my friends?" Peter said, trying to remember their faces.
"The cracks are getting too big! I'm running out of time!" Peter yelled out in fear.
"Open your eyes." Jason said and Peter opened his eyes in fear and sadness. Peter started to cry feeling like he lost something important.
"It's okay, you're not there anymore. You're alive again. You're alive." Jason said, picking him up again and holding him close. Peter just cried into his chest.
"I'm sad." Peter said sadly once his tears ran out.
"I know. But you're safe now. You're not with them." Jason said, trying to comfort him.
"I feel like I lost something important." Peter said, confused on why he was so sad.
"You have, your life." Jason said and Peter shook his head.
"Something more important. I... I don't remember what it is." Peter said sadly.
"That's okay, you'll remember eventually. Let me finish off dinner and get you something to eat." Jason said and Peter nodded. Jason set him down in a chair then got back to cooking. Peter watched him cook, still trying to remember what he lost but not able to remember.
Chapter 3: Son of who now?
Chapter Text
Jason didn't believe the kid when he said he was de-aged and already finished high school no less. The pits didn't de-age people. It could cure any ailments but it couldn't reverse age. Especially not someone who was eighteen back into an eight year old.
Jason was still concerned about this figure in a red cloak. If he remembers right the only one with a cloak would be Ra's himself but when Jason was in the league Ra's' cloak was green. Why would Ra's kill the kid then go out of his way to revive him in the sewers of Gotham? Was he sent here as some type of spy? Did Ra's know the kid couldn't remember who he was? Was the amnesia just a trick? The kid didn't look like he was faking it.
Jason watched Peter eat in curiosity. Peter looked skeptical at the food at first but once Jason started eating he relaxed. Peter ate surprisingly fast and asked for seconds.
"Don't over eat, kid. You're still just an eight year old." Jason said when Peter put a ridiculous amount of food on his plate.
"O-okay." Peter reluctantly put some food back. Jason was still wondering how the kid could eat so much as Peter sat back down to eat.
Jason was almost positive the kid wouldn't be able to eat all the food on his plate. The kid surprised him though and ate all of it. He didn't even look satisfied after he ate.
"How are you still hungry?" Jason asked as Peter looked longingly at the leftovers. Peter looked down and away from him, not answering.
"Okay kid. Where are you storing this food?" Jason asked skeptically.
"I'm not storing it. I just... eat a lot." Peter said, blushing in embarrassment. Jason looked at him skeptically trying to figure him out.
"Are you a meta?" Jason asked and Peter looked at him in confusion.
"What's a meta?" Peter asked innocently.
"A person with powers." Jason said and Peter shook his head.
"Nope. I don't have powers." Peter said, sounding scared.
"It's okay if you are a meta. I'll give you more food if you tell me what your powers are." Jason said and Peter grumbled looking away from him.
"Really? You're not going to tell me?" Jason asked, sure that would have worked. Peter just crossed his arms stubbornly. Jason stared at him then sighed once he knew the kid wasn't going to give in.
"Alright I'll let you have more but I will figure out your powers eventually." Jason said, taking Peter's plate and serving him more spaghetti and meatballs. Peter smiled in delight as Jason handed over his meal. Peter ate happily and Jason watched him in amusement.
Jason had no idea how he was going to figure out what Peter's powers were. He was happy to see the kid smiling though. The kid may be an ex-assassin but things weren't too late for him. Jason could teach him how to be good.
He should probably confront Ra's about the kid though. The kid looked like a younger version of Ra's. He has the same brown hair. The same brown eyes. Peter even inherited Ra's sharp jawline. Why would Ra's kill his own son? Unless Ra's didn't kill his own son. Ra's isn't known for wearing a red cloak.
Jason didn't even know Ra's could still have kids. Where was he keeping this kid hidden away? Ra's could have sent him away to live a normal life with his mother.
Why would Ra's do that though? It would explain why the kid died in New York but then how did he get in Gotham? Why didn't Ra's revive his son in his own base? Does Ra's even know that his son died?
Jason observed the kid and saw all the similarities to Ra's. This kid is definitely Ra's'. Peter said his last name was Parker though. He could be lying. Or maybe he doesn't even know he is Ra's' son.
That would be the best outcome and Peter did deserve a normal life. Maybe Ra's threw out Peter when he was a baby because he is a meta. Bruce did say the boy thought his parents were dead.
Peter finished eating and Jason picked him up.
"Okay kid, let's start with some serious questions." Jason said, bringing him to the couch.
"What?! I thought I told you to stop picking me up." The kid huffed angrily. Jason sat him down on the couch and Peter glared at him.
"I'm just trying to figure out if you remember anything. Dick-wad said you think you died in New York. Do you remember living there before you died?" Jason asked, sitting across from him.
"Uhhh... maybe. I remember...I remember fighting a lot. I don't remember who against but I think... I think I got hit by a train." Peter shivered, hugging himself.
The kid got hit by a train!? Maybe he was wrong about Ra's throwing the kid out when he was a baby.
"I had to fight... a lot." Peter sniffled and Jason noticed the scars on Peter's arms.
"What did Ra's do to you?" Jason asked in worry.
"Who's Ra's?" Peter asked, wiping away his tears.
"Your father." Jason decided to tell him the truth. Peter scrunched up his nose though and shook his head.
"That doesn't sound right. I'm a Parker." Peter said confidently.
"You think your parents died though." Jason said and Peter looked at him in confusion and offence.
"So what? I'm pretty sure they are dead. They died in a plane crash when I was three." Peter said glaring at him now.
"A plane crash, is that what they told you?" Jason asked and Peter nodded in confusion, getting more distressed.
"Do you remember their names?" Jason asked and Peter whimpered.
"Uh- their names... their names were.... uh-Richard and uh... Mary." Peter said, sounding uncertain.
Richard... it's a common name. There's no way this kid is Dick's. Ra's could have lied to his own son. It wouldn't surprise him.
"Do you remember why you were fighting?" Jason asked wondering how long this kid was actually with Ra's.
"Because it's... my responsibility. I have to." Peter said, sounding sad but serious.
"No it's not. Not anymore." Jason ran a hand through the kid's hair and Peter froze.
"But- I... I'm... I have to." Peter said and Jason shook his head.
"No you don't. You're eight. You don't have the responsibility to fight anyone." Jason said sincerely. Peter scowled and Jason chuckled.
"No more fighting, kid. You don't need to fight anymore." Jason said, pulling him into a hug.
"Get off me." Peter snapped struggling in his hold.
"Okay, okay, let's get you in bed. I need to go to work soon." Jason said, picking him up.
"Work? But it's nightime." Peter said in confusion.
"Yeah, I work the night shift." Jason said, bringing him to his bedroom.
"Put me down." Peter said glaring at him angrily.
"Alright, the bathroom is just through that door. Try and get some sleep." Jason said, putting him down and ruffling his hair.
"But... okay." Peter looked like he wanted to refuse but gave in.
"I'll be here till you fall asleep so don't worry about any monsters trying to get you." Jason said and Peter glared at him.
"I'm not a child." Peter said sourly.
"Sure kid." Jason said and watched as Peter reluctantly got ready for bed. Jason found a shirt that would engulf Peter's small little form and started to help Peter change out of his muddy and messy clothes. Jason froze for half a second when he saw the scars on the kid.
Jason knew he was Ra's' child but the scars still surprised him. There were way too many scars on his small body and looked to be from a number of different things as well. Did Ra's torture his son?
"Let's clean some of this dirt off of you before you go to bed." Jason said, realizing how dirty the kid actually was. Peter followed him to the bathroom and Jason cleaned him up with a washcloth.
"Do you think I'll ever remember my past?" Peter asked, looking at his scars sadly.
"I don't know. It's okay if you don't remember though. I don't think you need to remember what happened to make you look like this." Jason said and Peter nodded shivering.
"Do you want to take a shower now or just take one in the morning?" Jason asked, realizing the kid needed to be cleaned properly.
"In the morning." Peter said, looking away from his scars.
"Okay, let's just get you mostly clean then." Jason said and continued to gently wash him with a washcloth.
"Will you really stay until I fall asleep?" Peter asked, looking away from him.
"Of course I will. I'll even set up the alarm system in case someone tries to take you away." Jason reassured him.
"Thanks." Peter said, still looking uncomfortable.
"Nothing will get you here Peter. This is my most secure safehouse." Jason tried to reassure him. Peter didn't look all that comforted.
"It's okay kid. I'll only be gone for a few hours." Jason said and Peter sighed.
"Alright." Peter said and gave Jason a small smile.
"There's that smile." Jason said and Peter rolled his eyes, huffing. Jason could still see Peter's lips quirk upwards into a small smile.
If this is Ra's' kid. Jason is never giving him back.
Jason got Peter cleaned up and into some new clothes then tucked him into bed. Peter did scowl at him for tucking him in but Jason just found it amusing. Jason did as he promised and watched over Peter until he fell asleep then prepared to go out as Red Hood. First he cleaned up the kitchen then checked on Peter one last time before he left. Peter was snoring quietly and looked absolutely adorable when he was asleep.
Jason kissed Peter on the forehead then made sure he set up his alarms before heading out to patrol Crime Alley.
Then of course Dick contacted him.
"What do you want?" Jason asked in irritation.
"I was looking at the photo of Peter and... I... I don't have him on any database. I had Tim and Barbara check as well. It's like he doesn't exist." Dick said and Jason frowned.
"You think he's Ra's' son too." Jason said and Dick sighed.
"Yes, I thought I was crazy but he looks exactly like a younger version of Ra's. I haven't shown Tim or Barbara his picture yet but what if... what if this is Ra's' kid?" Dick asked, sounding fearful.
"I asked if he remembers anything about his parents and only got their names and died when he was three." Jason reported, hating Ra's even more now.
"What were their names? Maybe I can look them up." Dick asked.
"Mary and Richard. Last name Parker, I assume." Jason said and waited for Dick to look them up.
"Nothing I could find. Do you think I should tell Bruce?" Dick asked.
"He might go after Ra's directly. If you do tell him, go with him. Make sure he tells Ra's that he's not getting his son back." Jason said seriously.
"Why so much protection for the kid all of a sudden?" Dick asked.
"He has scars, Dick. A lot of scars. He said he fought a lot. Even said he got hit by a train." Jason said and Dick went quiet for a few seconds.
"Alright. I get it. I'll make sure Ra's knows he can't have his son back." Dick said seriously.
"Good." Jason hung up and continued his patrol.
~~~~~~
Bruce wasn't stupid. Bruce knew the kid had a connection to Ra's since the first moment he saw him. He couldn't quite place it though until Dick came to him with the wild theory that this kid was Ra's' son.
Bruce didn't believe him of course but then compared the picture of Peter to Ra's al Ghul. Bruce couldn't deny the similarities but he saw the differences as well. Peter's chin was less pronounced. His nose was smaller. His cheeks still had baby fat on them. He was a child.
Bruce was still having a hard time believing that this was Ra's' kid. Bruce had the computer compare the two photos to see how likely it was that they were related. The results he got were not comforting or conclusive.
An eighty nine percent chance they were related and that's just comparing their photos. Bruce needs definitive proof. Bruce needs a DNA sample to make sure.
“Dick, did you get a DNA sample when you interrogated him?" Bruce asked him, needing answers.
"Nope, the kid was spooked enough and I didn't want to scare him off." Dick said and Bruce sighed.
"Is he at your apartment?" Bruce asked.
"Nope." Dick said and Bruce tensed.
"What? Where is he then?" Bruce asked seriously.
"Jason took him in." Dick answered and Bruce groaned in stress.
"Of course. Any idea which safehouse Jason stored him in?" Bruce asked.
"Nope." Dick said then hung up and Bruce grunted in irritation.
Of course the one son who won't talk to him took the kid.
Bruce tried calling him anyway and wasn't surprised when he was sent straight to voicemail.
"Jason, I need a DNA sample from Peter." Bruce left a message and wondered if Jason would actually respond to him.
~~~~~~
Peter initially didn't want to fall asleep. Jason's bed was really comfy though and he did feel tired. Peter drifted off to sleep.
Peter woke up to his spider sense screaming at him and was immediately awake. Peter froze and listened carefully for danger. Peter heard the window opening and steadied his breaths and relaxed his muscles.
Peter heard the figure crawl into the room and step quietly through the room. Peter could sense that the person or demon was approaching him. Peter waited until the demon was right next to him then tried to punch him and knock him out. The demon caught his wrist and Peter started to panic when he saw it was the bat demon.
"G-get away from me!" Peter punched the demon with his other hand and got in a defensive stance as the demon got knocked back. The demon tried punching him but Peter blocked him and kicked the demon in the chest. The demon got knocked back into the wall. Peter quickly approached him, green invading his vision as he tried to knock out the demon quickly. The bat demon avoided him though and rolled away from him.
"I don't want to hurt you." Batman said and Peter huffed.
"Unlikely." Peter said then yelped as he was picked up from behind.
"What are you doing here B?" Jason's voice surprised him and Peter relaxed in his hold, the green fading from his vision.
"I wanted a DNA sample from the kid." Batman said and Peter scowled at him.
"Okay, and what were you doing up?" Jason asked Peter, putting him down.
"The bat demon tried to attack me!" Peter yelled in defense.
"Not a demon." The bat demon said and Peter glared at him.
"Fair enough. B, leave." Jason said holding onto Peter so he wouldn't attack again.
"I still need that DNA sample." Batman said as he headed for the window.
"Not gonna happen. Leave the kid alone." Jason said and Batman huffed but left.
"Are you okay, kid?" Jason asked, looking him over for injuries. Peter showed off his wrist and winced as he tried to turn it.
"My gosh. I'll get you some ice." Jason said, going to the kitchen. Peter looked down at his wrist and whimpered as he saw that it was red and swelling where Batman grabbed him. Jason was back with the ice in a matter of moments and gently wrapped his wrist.
"Does it hurt anywhere else?" Jason asked, looking him over for injuries again.
"No, just that." Peter said thankful Jason was here to patch him up and stopped the bat demon from attacking him.
"I'm so sorry Peter. If I'd known he would come here I would have answered my damn messages." Jason apologized to him.
"How do you know the bat demon?" Peter asked in suspicion.
"I don't really know him. He's Batman, everyone sort of knows him." Jason said and Peter looked at him in confusion.
"What is he? Like some high level demon?" Peter asked skeptically.
"No, he's not a demon. He's a superhero, a vigilante more like. Point is he's not a supervillain and he's not a demon. This isn't hell Peter. It's Gotham." Jason said and Peter didn't quite believe him.
"Why did he want my DNA then?" Peter asked, still upset.
"Because he's paranoid and doesn't know who you are. You were brought back to life. He's just trying to find out who brought you back and who killed you." Jason explained.
"Is this about the guy, Ra's, you mentioned earlier?" Peter asked, trying to put together the pieces.
"Sort of, do you remember something about him?" Jason asked and Peter shook his head.
"I still have no idea who he is." Peter said, lost.
"How about I show you a picture and maybe that will spark up some memories." Jason said doing something on his phone.
"I don't think it will but okay." Peter said and waited patiently for Jason to pull up the photo.
"Here we go." Jason showed him the photo and Peter looked at it in confusion.
The man in the photo certainly looked a little like his dad. It also looked like Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange. Who the fuck is Doctor Strange?
"Doctor Strange?" Peter said, looking at Jason, hoping that meant something.
"What?" Jason looked at him in confusion and Peter looked down.
Guess not.
Peter closed his eyes trying to remember again and this time he remembered being in space.
A spaceship with two men and a red cloak. Was the red cloak alive?
"Are you remembering something?" Jason asked.
"I... I don't know. It doesn't make sense." Peter said knowing Jason wouldn't believe him.
"Try me." Jason said and Peter sighed.
"I think I was on a spaceship once and there was a red cloak but it was alive." Peter said, blushing in embarrassment.
"Okay, let's get you back to bed." Jason said, leading him back to the bed. Peter grumbled as he knew Jason didn't believe him. Jason tucked him in again and checked on his wrist. Peter looked down at his wrist and it didn't look as bad anymore.
"You'll be okay. I'll leave this on the nightstand in case you need it again. I was practically done with my shift anyway so I'll be just in the other room if you need me." Jason said, putting the ice pack on the bedside table then running a hand through Peter's hair.
"Thank you." Peter thanked him quietly.
"No problem. Try and get some sleep." Jason said and Peter reluctantly nodded, agreeing to do so.
"Goodnight Peter." Jason bid him goodnight.
"Goodnight Jason." Peter said and reluctantly relaxed, drifting back to sleep.
Chapter 4: Maybe, Maybe, Maybe
Chapter Text
Peter was dreaming again. He was on a battlefield. It was dark and he was fighting faceless figures. Suddenly a light appeared and Tony was there. Tony hugged him and Peter hugged him back never wanting to let go.
Peter woke up crying and feeling like he was grieving someone important to him.
"Hey, buddy, it's okay it was just a dream." Jason's voice startled him and Peter sat up looking at him in surprise.
"Who are you?" Peter asked in panic.
"Jason, remember? You're in Gotham." Jason reassured him and Peter relaxed.
"I still don't think this place isn't hell." Peter said looking out the window at the dreary weather.
"It's not hell, let's get you properly cleaned up. Do you know how to clean yourself?" Jason asked him and Peter looked at him offence.
"Of course I do." Peter snapped.
"And can you read?" Jason asked.
"Yes, I can read." Peter said glaring at him.
"Sorry, just had to make sure. I'll see if you can borrow some of Damian's clothes and then we can go shopping after breakfast." Jason said ruffling his hair.
"Stop that. I'm not a kid." Peter gently pushed away his hand.
"Sure kid. I'll be right back with some clothes for you to change into." Jason left and Peter watched him go then reluctantly went to get ready for the day and take a shower.
As Peter got ready he tried to remember what happened to him. All he can remember though was the sky cracking and pain. Peter whimpered and tried to remember anything before the sky was cracking.
He knows his name is Peter Parker. He's eighteen. His parents' names are Richard and Mary Parker. He used to live... in a city. Then after his parents died... after his parents died...
Peter's head hurt and he hated that he couldn't remember.
Someone must have adopted him. He remembers vaguely going to school. He knows he has two friends or at least he did before he died. He can't remember any of their names though. He knows he remembers the name Doctor Strange but he has no idea why. Peter also recalls someone named Ben and May? Were those the people who adopted him?
Peter tried to remember but his memories were still fuzzy.
"Hey kid, you've been in there for a while, are you okay?" Jason asked over the noise of the water running.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Peter said remembering he was actually in the shower for a reason.
"Do you need help?" Jason asked.
"No! I'm fine!" Peter yelled out.
"Okay, I'll leave the clothes by the sink." Jason said and then Peter sighed in relief when he heard the door close.
Peter was quick to finish his shower then get dressed in the clothes Jason got for him. They were still a little big on him but Peter didn't really mind. Peter joined Jason in the kitchen where he was making pancakes and bacon for breakfast.
"Smells good." Peter said sitting at the counter top.
"Yeah? I made extra since I know you have a hightened metabolism. Also I think I figured out one of your powers." Jason said and Peter tensed.
"I... I don't have powers." Peter said starting to shake.
"Sure kid, and look at this." Jason said walking over to him and gently grabbing his wrist. "Not even bruised. You have super healing, kid." Jason said and Peter looked at his wrist then looked at Jason. Jason was smiling at him.
"You're not going to tell anyone, are you?" Peter asked shakily.
"Don't worry kid, your secret is safe with me." Jason said kissing his forehead.
"I'm not a kid!" Peter snapped at him, blushing in embarrassment. Jason just laughed and went back to cooking. Peter glared at him, upset.
"Come on kid, you still need to eat." Jason said putting a plate of pancakes in front of him. Peter scowled but started eating anyway.
"You know, I've been thinking-
"Whatever it is I refuse." Peter said glaring at him.
"Aw Peter, hear me out kid." Jason said looking at him in adoration.
"Fine, what is it?" Peter asked in irritation.
"Well, I was thinking that after I get you settled in and get a hold of your adoption papers, I'll get you into school. How does that sound?" Jason asked and Peter looked at him in confusion and anger.
"I doubt you'll find my adoption papers in hell. Also I refuse to go to school with a bunch of demons." Peter said, glaring at him.
"Again, Peter, this isn't hell. There's no demons out there." Jason said and Peter didn't trust him.
"Didn't you die too though?" Peter said pointing to the white streak in his hair. Jason tensed then shivered.
"Look, I know you... I know we died Peter but we aren't in hell. We were brought back to life." Jason said taking Peter's hand and gently pressing it into his wrist.
"Feel my pluse?" Jason asked and Peter nodded. Jason then gently put his fingers on Peter's wrist.
"I feel your pulse. Your heart is beating pretty fast. You're alive." Jason said seriously and Peter didn't know what to feel.
"But the bat demon and... Wyalon." Peter said scared to trust him.
"Batman just wears armor and Waylon is just sick is all." Jason said and Peter frowned.
"Are you sure?" Peter asked still doubting him.
"I am one hundred percent positive." Jason said and Peter glared at him in doubt.
"How long have you been dead?" Peter asked and Jason face palmed.
"I'm not dead. I'm alive. So are you." Jason said and Peter looked at him skeptically.
"We're not in hell kid. If we were I wouldn't be able to make this lovely meal we're having." Jason said and Peter grumbled in indecisiveness.
"I guess." Peter said, not fully convinced yet.
"I'll show you Peter. Gotham may be scary and full of crime but it certainly isn't hell." Jason said ruffling his hair.
"Stop that!" Peter snapped at him.
"Only when you stop being so adorable." Jason snickered and Peter glared at him, green invading his vision.
"Do not patronize me. I may not remember my past but I am not a child anymore." Peter said in offence.
"Sure, kid." Jason ruffled his hair again and Peter growled in anger, tensing up.
"I am not a child, Jason!" Peter yelled at him.
"Oh really? Then tell me kid, when's your birthday?" Jason asked and Peter froze.
"I... uh... August." Peter said not sure he actually remembered when his birthday was.
"What day?" Jason asked.
"I... don't remember." Peter said and Jason tilted his head at him.
"Okay, and the year?" Jason asked.
"Uh... I... I don't know." Peter said bowing his head in shame and confusion.
"Okay, let's see, it's 2011, it's September, and you're eight-"
"What? No I'm eighteen!" Peter said in offence.
"Yeah right, so that means you were born in 2003." Jason said and Peter scowled at him.
"That... that doesn't seem right." Peter said bothered, not knowing what his actual birthday was but certain it wasn't that.
"Well until you remember your actual birthday we're going with that. Hence you are still a kid." Jason said and Peter grumbled unhappily.
"Now finish your breakfast because you and I are going shopping for some clothes that actually fit you." Jason said and Peter looked at his outfit unhappily.
"Fine." Peter said, knowing he couldn't get out of this shopping trip. "But you have to protect me from the demons." Peter snapped at him.
"There's no demons but deal." Jason said offering his hand and Peter hesitantly shook it. Peter expected something magical to happen but nothing did.
"I'll figure out how to convince you this isn't hell soon." Jason said ruffling his hair. Peter just huffed in response and went back to eating.
~~~~~~
"So B, have any luck on the kid's identity?" Dick asked Bruce while he was working on the Batcomputer.
"Not yet." Bruce said sounding irritated.
"Yeah, neither has Tim or Barbara. I haven't found anything either. Have a guess why?" Dick asked smugly.
"I do but it's impossible." Bruce said and Dick snickered.
"Come on B, just admit it. Ra's has a son." Dick said leaning against the console.
"He's died there must be something we missed." Bruce said stubbornly.
"Yeah, like Ra's would actually let his kid go out into the world." Dick chuckled.
"The kid is not Ra's'." Bruce said furiously. Dick just raised an eyebrow at him as Bruce's search once again came up with nothing.
"Peter isn't his." Bruce searched again.
"Why are you so against the idea that they might be related?" Dick asked in curiosity.
"Because it doesn't make any sense. Why would Ra's leave his kid in Gotham anyway?" Bruce searched again but still came up with nothing.
"Well, let's go over this. We found the kid in a sealed cave without any of his memories. Maybe Ra's already knows his son is gone. Maybe he abandoned his son in that cave because of the amnesia. What if the kid never remembers who he is? You don't exactly leave with your body intact after getting hit by a train." Dick theorized.
"A train?" Bruce questioned.
"Oh yeah, Jaybird said the kid had scars and remembers being hit by a train." Dick said casually. Bruce sighed sounding pained.
"Did Jason say if he remembered anything else?" Bruce asked.
"Nothing so far." Dick answered, shrugging.
"Ra's wouldn't leave his son if he knew he had a chance of recovery." Bruce said, still searching.
"Maybe he thought Peter wouldn't come back. The kid has no memory and his body could have been... what I'm trying to say is that the pits might not have been enough to save him. It's possible Ra's really thought his son wouldn't recover." Dick guessed.
"Why would the kid not recognize the Lazuras pit then? Why did he think he's in hell?" Bruce asked in confusion.
"The same reason he doesn't remember any of his life. The pits brought him back but couldn't bring back his memories." Dick explained sounding confident.
"Ra's wouldn't abandon his own son. There was no evidence anyone else was even in that cave." Bruce huffed, still searching.
"Why do you think Ra's wouldn't abandon his own son? As for the cave, Ra's could have covered his tracks." Dick said getting irritated.
"Because Ra's wouldn't do that." Bruce said and Dick scowled at him.
"Sure and you know him so well. Just think Bruce. The pits probably didn't bring him back right away. Ra's could have thought the pits didn't work at all." Dick theorized and Bruce huffed.
"I won't believe it until I have proof." Bruce said going to the batmobile.
"I'm coming with you." Dick said quickly joining him.
"Fine." Bruce said and they were off.
~~~~~~
Ra's al Ghul didn't know why Batman was visiting him. Much less with the vigilante from Blüdhaven.
"Why are you here Batman?" Ra's al Ghul asked in irritation.
"I need a sample of your DNA." Batman said ever so stoically.
"What are you up to now, Bats?" Ra's asked glaring at him.
"This is about your son." Nightwing said and Ra's looked at him in confusion.
"My son? I don't have a son." Ra's said in confusion.
"You disowned him, good because you're not getting him back!" Nightwing said and Ra's felt ticked off.
"Who are you talking about?" Ra's asked, hating the idea that they somehow found a kid that might be his.
Ra's wasn't known for sleeping around but he did have some relationships, as brief as they were.
"Peter Parker, we found him in a Lazuras pit." Batman said and Ra's frowned.
"How old is he?" Ra's asked wondering if the kid they found was really his.
"He's eight. Now will you give me a DNA sample?" Batman asked and Ra's sighed but did so.
"If he is my son you will give him back." Ra's said glaring at them both.
"No we will not." Nightwing snapped at him.
"He may not even be yours." Batman said walking away.
"What grounds do you stand on to claim to have found my son then?" Ra's asked.
"This." Nightwing handed over a photo and Ra's examined it.
The boy certainly did look like he could be his son.
"Well, that and we found him in a Lazuras pit with no memory of who he is. Plus he has scars, a lot of them. So don't act like you don't know about him. You are not getting him back." Nightwing said taking the photo back. Ra's frowned, glaring at Nightwing as he walked off with Batman.
Ra's is not entirely sure this kid isn't his. He's not surprised one of his partners would keep his own child from him though. That is if the kid is his. He doesn't quite trust the bat to tell him if the kid is his.
Nightwing made it clear as day that he's not allowing Ra's to take his son back. Even if he does try to take the kid he thinks he'll have much difficulty attempting to do so. Is one kid worth it to go to war with Batman?
Ra's remembered Batman's more dangerous son who would kill him given the opportunity to and decided that maybe it wasn't worth it. Ra's is lucky Batman decided to even tell him of this kid in the first place.
~~~~~~
Peter hated shopping with Jason. It wasn't Jason's insistence to get him more than one outfit or even the outrageous prices, though those were a contributing factor. It was the "people".
"Peter stop glaring at everyone." Jason said as Peter glared at the person they passed by.
"But they could be demons in disguise like that cop." Peter said, upset.
"That cop? You mean Dick?" Jason asked and Peter nodded.
"Dick's not a demon. He's the least demon like person out of our family." Jason said and Peter looked at him in confusion.
"Our family?" Peter asked in confusion.
"Oh, that's right. I didn't properly introduce you to anyone yet. I assume you don't remember who the Wayne's are do you?" Jason asked him and Peter shook his head.
"Well my adoptive father is Bruce Wayne. He also adopted that cop you think is a demon. There's also Tim, Duke, Cass, sort of Steph, Barbara is a family friend, and then Damian is the blood child." Jason said and Peter looked at him nervously.
"You have a lot of siblings." Peter said shifting uncomfortably.
"Don't worry kid. You won't have to meet them all for a while. Let's just finish this shopping trip without you attacking anyone." Jason said and Peter frowned.
"I won't attack anyone." Peter said, crossing his arms.
"Well then stop glaring at everyone. Let's get you more pants." Jason said and Peter reluctantly followed him still weary of the people around them.
Jason bought him a myriad of outfits along with a leather jacket, riding gloves, and a motorcycle helmet.
"How are you paying for all of this?" Peter asked not sure why Jason has this much money to spend.
"I forgot to mention, my dad's a billionaire." Jason said and Peter scowled.
"Like a regular, merchant of death, billionaire?" Peter asked sourly.
"Merchant of death?!... no! The- merchant of death? Where did you get that title, kid?" Jason asked baffled.
Peter tried to remember but his head hurt.
"I don't know." Peter said still scowling at him.
"Bruce isn't a merchant of death. He's actually given to a lot of charities and he is very against killing." Jason said, sort of irritated.
"So he doesn't sell weapons to the military?" Peter asked skeptically.
"No, he doesn't. He has a lot of companies but he doesn't make weapons for the government." Jason couldn't believe he had to defend Bruce.
"Okay." Peter said slowly, still skeptical but deciding he could maybe trust Jason's word.
"He's not a demon either, I promise." Jason said sincerely.
"I guess I trust you." Peter said still hesitant.
"Really?" Jason asked hopefully.
"Maybe." Peter said glaring at him.
"Alright kid, let's get this all home and we can grab some lunch on our way back." Jason said and Peter helped hold some bags. Instead of riding Jason's motorcycle, Jason drove a car to the store. It was red and very well armored but sleek. Jason let Peter ride in the front.
"Can we get Bat Burger?" Peter asked as they got in the car.
"Of course. What do you want kid?" Jason asked him.
"I'm not a kid and I want a burger and fries!" Peter said excitedly.
"Okay how many?" Jason asked.
"Can I have two?" Peter asked sheepishly.
"I'll get you three. I already know you have a hightened metabolism kid. You don't have to be scared to ask for more food. This is isn't hell." Jason said and Peter looked at him uncomfortably.
"Why are you doing this? Any of this? You don't even know who I am. I don't even know who I am." Peter asked sadly.
"Because you're just a kid. I'm not gonna just throw you out to fend for yourself. You're eight. You shouldn't have to fend for yourself." Jason said putting a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm not a kid though." Peter tried to point out.
"You are eight. You are still a kid. You don't have to act like an adult. You don't have any responsibility to." Jason said and Peter knew there was no convincing Jason that he was any older.
"I still don't remember my life though. What if I was evil before?" Peter asked in fear.
"If you were evil you don't have to be now. You can be good." Jason said running a hand through his hair.
"I... okay." Peter gave in, leaning into Jason's hand.
"Are you okay Peter?" Jason asked him in concern. Peter sniffled trying not to cry.
"I'm fine." Peter said, feeling really sad again.
"Okay, I'll hurry to get us lunch then we can head home to talk about this." Jason said and Peter just nodded, hugging himself. Jason put on some music and Peter closed his eyes trying to remember his life again.
Peter remembered being in a city but for some reason he was in the air. He was falling! His wrist shot up and something white came out of it. He wasn't falling anymore. He was swinging? How? Peter remembered something on his wrist... a device that shot out... webs? Why webs? Did he do this normally?
Peter then remembered fighting a person in black ski mask. Was he stopping crime? Was he a vigilante? A spider themed vigilante? Spider-man.
Peter then felt the feeling of horror and panic overwhelm him.
No, no, no, no, it was bad. No one is supposed to know! Bad, bad, bad.
"Leave me alone, leave me alone, leave me alone!" Peter whispered to himself, his head hurting and his memories getting fuzzy again.
"It's okay, breathe with me kid. You need to breathe." Jason's voice got through his panic and Peter tried to match his breathing to Jason's.
"In... out... in... out..." Jason helped him through a breathing exercise and Peter calmed down just crying now. Jason then pulled over and unbuckled Peter and picked him up. Jason brought Peter into his lap and hugged him. Peter just cried into Jason's chest shaking in fear.
"I got you. No one is going to hurt you anymore. I'll protect you." Jason said, gently rubbing his back. Eventually Peter calmed down as Jason held him close and whispered promises of protection.
"Do you want to talk about what you just remembered?" Jason asked him gently. Peter shook his head then buried his face into Jason's chest.
"Okay, that's okay. Do you want to get some ice cream after lunch?" Jason asked and Peter nodded.
"Alright, do you think you can sit by yourself now?" Jason asked and Peter nodded. Jason helped Peter back into his seat and buckled him back in.
"Let's just focus on the present for now. You don't need to remember everything about your life." Jason said running a hand through Peter's hair.
"Okay." Peter agreed then Jason started driving again.
Peter made sure to focus on the present and soon enough Jason gave him some Bat Burger to distract him from his memories. After they ate Jason got them icecream from Dairy Queen as promised then they headed home. Peter didn't speak the entire time. Peter helped bring the bags inside then Jason picked him up and brought him to the couch.
"Are you ready to talk about what you remembered?" Jason asked him. Peter shook his head not wanting to remember anymore.
"Okay then let's play a game. I ask questions and all you have to do is say yes or no." Jason suggested.
"Okay." Peter agreed, knowing he couldn't avoid his past forever.
"Is what you remembered someone hurting you?" Jason asked and Peter whimpered.
"I..." Peter trailed off then shook his head in uncertainty.
"Is what you remembered someone hurting you care about?" Jason asked and Peter shook his head.
"Okay, was someone chasing you?" Jason asked and Peter nodded.
"Do you remember what they were wearing or what they looked like?" Jason asked and Peter shook his head.
"Alright do you remember why they were chasing you?" Jason asked and Peter nodded starting to tear up again.
"Was it because you did something bad?" Jason asked and Peter hesitantly shook his head.
"Hmmm. We're you in trouble for something?" Jason asked and Peter nodded.
"Okay, alright. That's enough questions." Jason ran a hand through Peter's hair then kissed his forehead.
"Why don't we watch a movie. You don't need to remember anything else right now." Jason suggested.
"Okay." Peter snuggled into Jason's side as Jason grabbed the remote and turned on the t.v.
Chapter 5: Closer to the Truth
Chapter Text
Tim had no idea who this Peter Parker kid was and was more perturbed when he couldn't find anything on him. Tim was half convinced Dick just made up the name Peter Parker to send him on a wild goose chase.
Then he visited Jason unannounced to complain. Tim got inside only to be tackled to the ground and pinned. Tim struggled and was surprised he couldn't throw off the small figure that tackled him.
"What are you doing here, demon?!" A young voice yelled at him.
"Replacement, what are you doing here?" Jason asked, grabbing the kid off of him. "Also he's not a demon kid. He's my idiotic brother." Jason said ruffling the kid's hair. The kid glared at Tim in mistrust as Tim stood up.
"I was going to complain about Dick. Who's the kid?" Tim asked in confusion.
"This is Peter Parker. Peter, this is Tim." Jason introduced them, putting Peter down.
"I am not a kid." Peter huffed glaring at Jason.
"His name really is Peter Parker?" Tim asked in suspicion.
"Yup and he has amnesia. Did you find anything on him?" Jason asked, keeping a hand on Peter's shoulder as Peter glared at Tim again.
"No, I didn't think he was real." Tim said, examining Peter closely. Peter scowled at him, his eyes glowing green.
"Why does he look like Ra's?" Tim asked in surprise.
"The prevailing theory is that he is Ra's' son. Peter doesn't even know who Ra's is though." Jason explained as Peter pouted looking lost and confused.
"That would explain why I can't find anything about him." Tim agreed but was still skeptical.
This kid certainly looked like a mini Ra's but it was strange that the kid had amnesia and was abandoned in a cave.
The kid then closed his eyes and was tensing up.
"What's he doing?" Tim asked, looking at him in confusion.
"He's having another memory. Be quiet." Jason snapped at him and Tim watched silently.
"I don't wanna go." Peter started to cry. Jason crouched down and gently brought the kid into a hug.
"I don't wanna go, I don't wanna go." Peter clung to Jason crying into his chest.
"It's okay, you're not there anymore. You're not in hell. You're alive." Jason reassured him and Peter whimpered.
"I... I died." Peter said, still crying.
"I know, but you're alive now." Jason reassured him.
"It hurt." Peter whimpered, hugging Jason again. Jason picked him up, holding him close.
"It's okay, you're alive now. This isn't hell." Jason said and Peter slowly stopped crying as he buried his face into Jason's shoulder.
"What's with the hell thing?" Tim asked quietly.
"He woke up in a cave with Waylon as his first impression of Gotham then Batman." Jason explained briefly.
"Okay, makes sense now. Does the kid often get so worked up because of his memories?" Tim asked in concern.
"Not all of his memories but a huge majority of them." Jason said, kissing Peter on the forehead as the kid has stopped crying now and gone quiet.
"M' not a kid." Peter mumbled out, still clinging to Jason tightly.
"Mhmm, did you remember anything important?" Jason asked him gently. Peter shook his head.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Jason asked and Peter shook his head. "Alright, that's okay." Jason said and Tim watched in fascination as the kid buried his head into Jason's chest again.
"You are disturbingly soft with this kid. When did you become such a caring person?" Tim asked Jason in suspicion. Jason just glared at him. "Okay, nevermind. I'm sorry." Tim apologized before Jason could throw him out.
"What do you want Tim?" Jason asked as Peter still clung to him but was now glaring at Tim as well.
"Well, I wanted to complain about Dick for sending me on a wild goose chase." Tim explained sheepishly.
"Why didn't you go bother any of our other siblings?" Jason asked in irritation.
"Because all of them are either busy or wouldn't take my side. Now that I'm here though I see you won't take my side either." Tim said as Peter scowled at him.
"Stay away, demon." Peter spat.
"Not a demon. My brother. He's alive too." Jason reassured Peter.
"I guess." Peter said, still looking at Tim skeptically. "Put me down." Peter snapped at Jason and Jason chuckled attempting to do so. Peter still clung onto him though and wouldn't let go.
"Buddy, for me to put you down you need to let go of me." Jason said in amusement.
"I know." Peter said then slowly did so but grabbed Jason's hand and didn't let go.
"He seems very attached to you." Tim chuckled and Peter glared at him.
"Believe it or not this is the first time he refused to let me go." Jason said ruffling the kid's hair.
"That's heartwarming. So how old is he?" Tim asked curiously.
"I'm eighteen." Peter said proudly.
"He's eight." Jason corrected Peter.
"I was de-aged." Peter huffed, letting go of Jason's hand.
"There is no evidence you were de-aged." Jason said, looking down at Peter.
"But I remember being eighteen or at least I think I do." Peter said in uncertainty.
"Have you actually tested his intelligence to figure out how old he is?" Tim asked.
"No, did you miss the part where he has amnesia?" Jason asked and Tim rolled his eyes.
"Well if he grew up with Ra's then got de-aged there's no doubt he learned quite a lot. Why don't we test him? What's your password?" Tim asked, opening Jason's laptop. Jason huffed, taking his laptop back.
"We can test him if he wants to. Peter, are you okay with this?" Jason asked Peter gently. Peter nodded, looking determined.
"Alright, you tell me anytime you want to back out though, okay?" Jason said, putting a hand on Peter's shoulder.
"Okay." Peter said, nodding.
"Okay, Tim, you can look up the test." Jason said, sitting on his bed then unlocking his laptop. Tim sat beside him then looked up a reliable test once Jason gave his laptop over. Peter sat on the other side of Jason looking determined but anxious.
"Here you go, kid. Try your best." Tim said, handing the laptop over to Peter. Jason helped steady the laptop on Peter's lap and Peter started taking the test.
Peter was extremely good at the math, geometry, science, and physics questions. He struggled a bit on the literature questions and pouted anytime he got to a history question.
"I don't want to do this anymore." Peter sniffled as he got another history question wrong.
"Okay, that's okay. You don't have to." Jason said, taking away the laptop then bringing Peter into a hug. While Jason comforted Peter, Tim grabbed the laptop and checked over Peter's answers. Peter got nearly all the history questions wrong.
Tim was impressed by the math and physics Peter knew though. This test showed that Peter was smart, learning college level math and science but his literature was terrible along with his history. All this to say the test results didn't really help to prove how old Peter was. Tim watched Peter cry into Jason's chest and didn't know what to think.
Why would the kid think he was de-aged if he wasn't really de-aged? Why doesn't the kid know any history? If he really was eighteen the kid would have known at least some history. Ra's wouldn't let the kid grow up without knowing any history. Ra's was big on his own history and likely would have told Peter tons of stories about the past. There's no way this kid didn't know any actual history.
Peter was crying though and looked extremely distressed because of his lack of knowledge.
Maybe it's the amnesia. There's no actual proof the kid grew up with Ra's. Could the kid fight though? That could definitely prove if the kid grew up training as an assassin.
"Have you tested Peter's physical skills? Can he fight?" Tim asked and Jason glared at him intensely.
"Peter will not be fighting. Get out." Jason snapped at him, his eyes blazing green.
"I was just-"
"Get out." Jason pointed a gun at him and Tim was quick to leave before Jason could shoot him. Tim quickly made his way back home, no closer to figuring out who the kid was.
~~~~~~
Damian was in the batcave training by himself. Grayson and Father were also there but they were doing something on the Bat-computer. Damian wasn't actually sure what they were working on but they kept whispering to each other sounding angry. Damian is used to listening to Grayson and Father fight but usually their fights are much louder.
Drake came into the cave looking frightened and ran up to Father.
"Jason tried to kill me again!" Drake yelled and Damian paused in his training.
Todd attacked Drake again? Why?
"What happened?" Father asked Drake in confusion.
"I was just going over to complain about Dick-wad for sending me on a wild goose chase. Then I met the kid and I suggested we do a few tests and Jason really didn't like it when I suggested we see how well he fights." Drake rambled, sending a glare towards Grayson.
A kid? Todd adopted a kid?
"Did you find out anything about him?" Father asked and Damian frowned.
Who was this kid and why does it matter who he is?
"He's super smart... kinda. He knows nothing about history and literature but he's great at math, science, and physics." Drake reported.
"That doesn't make any sense." Grayson said, clearly confused by this news.
"Did you manage to get a DNA sample from him?" Father asked and Damian scowled.
Why do they need this kid's DNA?
"No." Drake said shamefully.
"Tt. Who is this kid and why is he so important?!" Damian yelled angrily.
"Your maybe uncle." Grayson said and Damian paused.
What? Maybe uncle? What did that mean? Did Ra's have another child? If he has an uncle why do they keep calling him a kid?
"We don't know for sure that he's Ra's'." Father said and Damian frowned.
"I demand to see him." Damian said glaring at his father. Grayson and Father exchanged glances then Grayson got out a photo and handed it to him. Damian looked at the photo in surprise.
The kid really was a kid. He looked even younger than Damian. Why did they say maybe?
"Hold on, why do you not know for sure he is Grandfather's son?" Damian asked, baffled.
"Jason." Father and Grayson said at the same time.
"What does this have to do with Todd?" Damian asked in confusion.
"Ever since we rescued the kid Jason immediately stole him away and now is protecting him like a lion protecting it's cub." Father said, sounding perturbed.
"Yeah, and he has a gun." Grayson said, crossing his arms.
"He has many." Drake agreed, nodding.
"I am going to see him." Damian said determinedly.
"No you're not." Father said and Damian glared at him.
"Tt. Why not?!" Damian asked angrily.
"Because the kid has amnesia. He doesn't remember who he was. We're still trying to find out if this kid is Ra's' in the first place." Father said sternly.
"All we know is that he woke up in a pit and thinks Gotham is hell. Plus Jason said he had scars and that he was hit by a train before." Grayson pointed out.
Hit by a train? Damian has been through his fair share of injuries but he's never been hit by a train before. How did his maybe uncle get revived after that? How will he help his maybe uncle remember who he is?
"I still want to see him. Do we know his name?" Damian asked, still determined to see his maybe uncle.
"Peter Parker." Father answered him.
"Parker?" Damian questioned.
"Yeah, we have no idea where he got the name either. I'm not even sure it's his real name." Drake said sourly.
"He thinks someone named Mary and Richard are his parents but I can't find anything on them either." Grayson said just as sour.
"Do we know anything else about him?" Damian asked curiously.
"Nope, Jason hasn't been forthcoming with any answers either." Father sighed. Damian understood his father's sentiment. Todd was usually closed off about things he actually cared about.
If he couldn't talk to his new maybe uncle. The next best thing is to stalk him behind Father's back. Drake would definitely agree and maybe Grayson.
Damian smiled and waited for the opportunity to get Tim on board with his plan.
~~~~~~
Peter didn't understand how he could be so wrong about history. He was so confident he could get things right but when the history questions came up everything he knew was wrong. Why wasn't what he knew true? Apparently he can't remember anything right anymore!
"It's okay. It's not your fault you can't remember any history." Jason said, trying to comfort him.
"But I can! I remember... I-" Peter sobbed into Jason's chest, so lost and confused.
"It's okay. It's okay. I got you." Jason said and Peter shook his head sniffling.
"It's not okay, things aren't the... it's not okay." Peter cried out, not understanding why things weren't making sense.
"I know. I'm sorry but I'll help you through this." Jason reassured him. Peter just whimpered and sobbed into Jason's chest.
"I got you. I'll help you. It's going to be okay. I'll make it okay." Jason said and Peter held onto him and refused to let him go.
"I'll make it okay. We can go over history together and you can re-learn this. It's going to be okay." Jason comforted him. Peter just whimpered and Jason held him close until he stopped crying and freaking out so badly.
"Do you want me to help you learn history?" Jason asked him gently. Peter nodded and Jason opened up his laptop.
"Let's go through American history and we can work our way from there." Jason said and Peter nodded listening intently as Jason started giving him a history lesson.
Peter re-learned history but he couldn't help but feel like something about everything Jason was saying felt wrong. Peter tried not to let that bother him though and listen intently.
Then Jason got into what he called the super hero era and Peter had another breakdown as none of the names or events sounded real or right in any way. Jason had to calm him down again and gently asked if he should keep going. Peter nodded not understanding but letting Jason go on.
Once Jason was finished Peter felt really confused and sad.
"Is that all?" Peter asked, feeling like Jason missed some big important things.
"Well there's other history about other countries-"
"No, there has to be more. You're forgetting the... the... the blip!" Peter yelled out glad he could remember what it was called. Peter isn't sure what it was but he knew it was super important.
"The blip?" Jason looked confused.
"Yeah! I... five years! Blip!" Peter said excitedly not sure what he was referring to but knowing Jason had to know what he was talking about.
"Five years... uhh..." Jason did some googling and Peter looked at him expectantly.
"Uh... was this an important event?" Jason asked him in confusion.
"Yes! I was... it was very important." Peter said, nodding.
"Okay, maybe I'm not spelling something right." Jason said and Peter frowned.
"It should have been all over the news. It didn't happen all that long ago." Peter said sure of himself.
"I'm sorry kid. I can't find anything." Jason said and Peter frowned.
"But... it was important." Peter said sadly feeling lost.
"Okay, I believe you. Maybe it just didn't affect Gotham." Jason said and Peter scowled.
"Uh... no. It... I... no." Peter said, crossing his arms and glaring at him.
"Don't worry kid. I'll figure out what you're talking about." Jason said and Peter felt a bit better.
"Remember anything else really important?" Jason asked him.
"No." Peter said glumly.
"Alright. That's okay. You don't need to remember right now." Jason ran a hand through Peter's hair and Peter leaned into his touch. Peter then remembered how he died again and sniffled.
"I... I went all dusty. It hurt a lot." Peter said tearfully.
"You're alive now. That's all that matters." Jason comforted him bringing him into a side hug.
"I want to remember who I am." Peter said feeling like he was missing something extremely important.
"I know. I do too but I don't want you hurting because of your past." Jason said and Peter snuggled into his side.
"You promise this isn't hell?" Peter asked desperately.
"I promise." Jason said, kissing his forehead.
"Okay." Peter said, accepting that this place probably wasn't hell.
"I think I had friends." Peter said as Jason just continued to hold him close.
"Yeah?" Jason asked.
"Yeah, I don't think they... I feel like they won't recognize me though." Peter said sadly.
"Why's that?" Jason asked him. Peter closed his eyes trying to remember why.
He remembered the sky cracking, the red cloaked man yelling at him. The man's hands glowing. His friends looking at him sadly. Something painful happening then nothing.
"Magic." Peter settled on that word as an explanation.
"Magic... okay. That actually sounds like a plausible explanation. There's someone I know who knows a lot about magic. Do you want to go visit him? See if you really were de-aged?" Jason suggested and Peter immediately nodded.
"Alright, let's see if we can get a hold of him." Jason said and Peter smiled glad they were finally closer to finding answers.
Chapter 6: The Truth
Chapter Text
John Constantine was minding his own business when one of the bats dropped in on him with a child no less. The bat took off his helmet then the kid's and John was met with two pairs of green glowing eyes.
Oh and of course it's the murderous revenant.
"Leave me alone please." John pleaded wanting nothing to do with whatever this was.
"Hey Constantine." Jason greeted him.
"Go away." John said, trying to walk away but they followed him.
"Is he a demon?" The little kid asked and John froze.
"No, he's not a demon. He's an alcoholic." Jason reassured the kid.
"Hold up, why does the kid think I'm a demon?" John asked, glaring at Jason.
"That's why we need your help." Jason said and John had to make sure he didn't somehow end up in hell again.
"No, this is still the living realm… and you're still here." John said, looking at Jason then walking forward again.
"Constantine, please we need your help." Jason pleaded, jogging to catch up to him.
"I don't care. Whatever it is, leave me out of it." John said, opening up a portal to his apartment and walking through. John huffed as Jason managed to follow him through with the kid.
"He has amnesia and he thinks he's been de-aged." Jason explained.
"And this is my problem, why?" John asked, putting away the books he was carrying.
"Constantine, can you please just check?" Jason asked, upset.
"Ugh, fine." John said in annoyance then took a swig of his flask before saying a simple spell to allow him to see magical signatures.
John choked, spitting out his drink as he got a look at the kid.
"Are you okay?" Jason asked in confusion.
"Get whatever this is away from here now!" John yelled, opening a portal to the street below.
"What? Why? What's wrong?" Jason asked, refusing to move.
"That kid is cursed! Not by any old magician but the Sorcerer Supreme so get him and yourself out of my apartment!" John yelled at him angrily.
"Who's the Sorcerer Supreme and what curse?!" Jason asked, refusing to leave.
"Ask someone else! I'm not touching this kid with a fifteen foot pole. Now leave or you will be removed." John said in anger and fear.
"Fine, come on Peter. Let's get out of here." Jason went through the portal but the kid didn't move.
"The time stone." The kid said and John quickly opened up a portal under the kid dropping him on top of Jason.
"Goodbye!" John closed the portals and started to hyperventilate.
What the fuck? What the fuck?! What the actual fuck?! The fucking Socerer Supreme! How the fuck did Jason find that kid? If the kid was cursed by the fucking Socerer Supreme he must have done something really really bad. How the fuck does he deal with this? He should just stay away. Stay far far away!
The curse was breaking though. The Sorcerer Supreme's spell wouldn't last forever. The de-aging thing might be the only thing permanent about that spell. Well and the banishment. That part looked pretty permanent too. Did the Sorcerer Supreme do this on purpose? Banishment from where? The kid was banished to here? That doesn't make any sense. Unless the kid isn't a kid at all and some monster or unfathomable being.
Fuck, please let the bats just leave this one alone. John doesn't think he can take another second around that... thing. The kid though... it didn't look like a monster. Despite the extra magic by being revived by the pits a bunch of times the kid looked entirely human. The kid's soul was pure. He looked like a genuinely good kid.
Why the banishment spell though? What did the kid do to deserve to be banished? Banished... that was definitely a banishment spell or at least one of the spells in that giant spell. Where was he banished from? Why would a good soul like that be banished?
John thought back to the complicated spell on the kid and his head hurt.
"Oww, a protection spell on the spell itself? Now that's just not fair." John said to himself sourly. John gazed out his window then froze.
"What the fuck?" John asked as he saw Jason trying to jimmy his lock. The kid was clinging onto the back of Jason and smiled at John as he noticed him staring. The kid waved at him and John sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Why do I even try anymore?" John huffed then used a simple spell to unlock his window. Jason smiled then immediately opened the window and climbed back into John's apartment.
"Don't say anything, just let me examine this spell." John held up his hand, silencing Jason before he could say anything. John took a deep breath then said a simple spell so he could properly read what spell was on the kid and what it did.
John examined it closely and realized it wasn't breaking. It first took his memories then it was slowly unwinding so the kid could remember his past. Probably because of the de-aging. Wouldn't want the kid's head to explode or send him into a coma, which is probably more probable.
The banishment spell was strong. Strong enough to probably send this kid to a new universe. A different universe... okay but why? The spell had no warning sign.
John then noticed a backlash spell. A spell so strong that the backlash was enough to imprint on this spell. A spell to wipe a whole world's memory of-
"Peter Parker." John said and the kid looked at him in attention.
"That- that's not your name is it?" John asked, feeling scared for him.
"It is." The kid nodded.
What could have this kid done to possibly deserve such a fate? His soul was only eighteen years old. This was the cruelest spell he ever laid eyes on. Why was it on a soul that looked so bright and innocent?
The kid probably doesn't even remember why this happened to him yet. What does he tell Jason? The kid must have deserved this. Unless this Sorcerer Supreme from a different universe was just cruel and downright evil. How does he explain this to the kid? Fuck! What does he say?
"Constantine, you need to breathe." Jason said and John looked at him in surprise then realized he was starting to hyperventilate again.
"I-I don't- this... I don't have enough information. I mean I do but this... I can't... he's too young." John said, still struggling to breathe.
"Breath with me Constantine. You're no use to me while you're having a panic attack." Jason said and John reluctantly did so trying to get his breathing back to normal. Jason was surprisingly helpful and even grabbed him some tissues and water after he got control of his breathing.
"Why- oh." John said as he realized he'd been crying and reluctantly accepted the tissues and water.
"Are you okay?" Peter worried over him.
"M'fine kid. I just need a moment." John said and took a few more moments to calm himself down.
"Why were you freaking out Constantine?" Jason asked in irritation.
"Because I don't know why he was..." John trailed off, unable to finish his sentence.
"You said cursed earlier. You don't know why?" Jason questioned him.
"I can read what the spell does but I don't know why it was cast. A spell like this..." John shook his head looking at the kid in pity.
His soul was so pure. There's no way the kid actually did something wrong. But how does he know for sure? He doesn't, not until the spell gives back all of the kid's memories but that could take years.
"What does the spell do?" Jason questioned him.
"It... it's complicated." John said not sure how to tell him the truth.
"Then simplify it." Jason said, pissed.
"I... I can't- it's not- I can't say-"
"Constantine, what spell is on my kid?" Jason asked, grabbing John by the front of the shirt and lifting him up.
"A banishment spell, a de-aging spell and a memory spell." John gave up the truth.
"Banishment? From where?" Jason asked in confusion.
"A different universe." John said quickly and Jason dropped him. John barely caught his balance and looked at the kid. The kid was staring at him with wide eyes. The kid whimpered and John winced.
Well fuck. This is exactly why he didn't want to tell the kid.
The kid started to cry and Jason immediately picked the kid up and comforted him.
Fuck, the kid is crying. That means the Sorcerer Supreme from a different universe probably was just an evil bastard.
"Okay I helped, get out, please." John pleaded, very uncomfortable with the situation at hand.
"Fine." Jason said and walked out the door with the kid still crying into his shoulder.
John is going to need a lot of alcohol to forget about this one.
~~~~~~
A different universe. That made a lot of sense and Jason was surprised by the information that the kid was actually de-aged. Wait, if he is from another universe Ra's definitely doesn't know anything about the kid.
Once he got Peter to calm down he immediately called Dick.
"Do not tell Ra's about Peter." Jason said immediately when Dick picked up.
"What? Why?" Dick asked in confusion.
"Peter is from another universe. Ra's isn't going to know anything about him." Jason said and Dick went quiet.
"Shit." Dick said and Jason growled.
"What the hell did you do?" Jason asked angrily.
"I sort of maybe already told him about Peter." Dick said nervously.
"Why?" Jason asked angrily.
"You said to make sure Ra's knows he's not getting his son back!" Dick yelled at him.
"Did you at least leave out the part where Peter may be Ra's' son?" Jason asked and Dick went quite again.
"I'm going to kill you!!!" Jason yelled at him angrily. Dick hung up on him and Jason growled angrily.
"Who's Ra's?" Peter asked innocently and Jason groaned in stress.
"The demon's head." Jason said in stress then immediately regretted it.
"A demon! You said this wasn't hell!" Peter yelled, sounding betrayed.
"It's not hell. He's not actually a demon, that's just what he's called. This isn't hell." Jason reassured him and Peter pouted.
"It's not hell. This is just a different universe kid. At least that's what Constantine said." Jason said and Peter went quiet.
"Why does everyone think I'm his son?" Peter asked, upset.
"You look a lot like him, kid." Jason shrugged.
"I am not a kid." Peter snapped at him.
"Yeah I suppose that is true but you still look no older than eight and you don't exist in this universe. So it looks like we'll have to build you an identity." Jason said realizing the kid was actually mentally eighteen.
"For your information this is my ten year old body. I'm not even eight!" Peter yelled at him angrily.
"Hold up, this is not my fault. You never corrected me." Jason defended himself.
"I'm sorry if I was trying to remember my clearly tragic past! I died twice now, if you don't count the number of times I drowned when I got banished here!" Peter yelled at him angrily.
"Drowned? Hold up, what do you mean twice?" Jason asked in confusion.
"I don't know!" Peter yelled then turned away from him and crossed his arms angrily. Peter sniffled and Jason frowned as he realized the kid was crying again.
"Hey, just because you got de-aged doesn't mean I won't comfort you." Jason said, picking him up.
"I'm sorry for yelling at you." Peter cried into his chest and Jason held him close.
"I forgive you kid." Jason said, glad the kid still trusted him.
"I'm sorry for crying so much. I just... I don't remember anything from my universe except that I was in pain. A lot of it. When I got here I was confused and I panicked. I'm sorry. I don't want to be kicked out. Please don't kick me out." Peter pleaded sadly.
"Hey, hey, it's okay. I won't kick you out. Why would I kick you out?" Jason asked, wiping away his tears.
"Because now you know I'm not really a kid. I'm supposed to be better than this, more mature." Peter said, still crying quietly.
"You were de-aged. It makes sense that you couldn't process all that trauma from your own universe. You still don't have your memories kid. You don't have to be mature." Jason comforted him and Peter hugged him burying his face into Jason's shoulder.
"I'm sorry." Peter apologized again.
"It's okay Peter. You don't have to apologize. This wasn't your fault." Jason said and Peter cried harder.
"I think it was my fault. It was my fault the sky was cracking." Peter said tearfully.
"This was not your fault. Whatever happened in your universe doesn't matter anymore. You're here now and you did nothing wrong." Jason tried to comfort him.
"What if I deserve to be in hell? I wouldn't be banished for nothing. What if I'm evil?" Peter asked, starting to freak out again.
"Kid, you're not evil. This isn't hell." Jason tried to tell him.
"How do you know? Why did I die twice then? What if I was a supervillain?" Peter asked sadly.
"If you are this distressed about being a supervillain you most likely weren't one. You don't have to be a supervillain. It doesn't matter what you did in the past, it just matters what you do now." Jason said and Peter calmed down.
"I'm sorry." Peter apologized again.
"It's okay. You don't need to apologize." Jason said and Peter cried quietly into Jason's shoulder. Jason then thought about what Constantine said.
A banishment spell, a de-aging spell and a memory spell. A memory spell, that's why Peter has amnesia. Constantine didn't even try to reverse the spell! He just told him to leave!
"Okay Peter, let's go back in there and get Constantine to help you bring back your memories." Jason said, walking back to Constantine's door and knocking on it. Constantine opened the door looking pissed off.
"I thought you said you would leave me alone." Constantine said sourly.
"Reverse the memory spell." Jason demanded, still holding Peter in his arms. Constantine sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose in stress.
"I can't." Constantine said, backing away from him.
"Why not?" Peter asked, now glaring at Constantine as well.
"Even though his soul is eighteen his brain is still that of an- what are you eight?" John asked.
"Ten." Peter huffed.
"Ten year old. If I mess with the spell and try to give him his memories back sooner than intended he'll fall into a coma because his brain would be too overwhelmed with the new information. Eight years is a lot for a kid. If I try to reverse the memory spell he might go brain dead." Constantine said seriously.
"So, when will his memories come back?" Jason asked sourly.
"Well... slowly and it might take years for all his memories to come back. It's a pretty powerful spell and it's safer if he grows up a bit before remembering all of his past." Constantine said, looking at Peter in pity.
"Oh." Peter said quietly.
"Can't you reverse the de-aging spell then?" Jason asked.
"Uh... well I could try but the de-aging spell is connected to the banishment spell and if I mess with that then I don't even know what will happen. Most likely a rip in the universe, which isn't ideal and impossible to fix, at least for me." Constantine explained, sounding horrified.
"That does sound bad. Is there anyone powerful enough to fix a rip in the universe?" Jason asked, still trying to find a solution.
"Not around here. I heard the Sorcerer Supreme is in another dimension entirely. Can't tell which bloody one and he's hard to convince anyway. Doesn't quite like when I poke around in his business. The Champion of Magic might be able to but no one has seen him in years." Constantine said, taking a swig of his flask.
"So... we just have to wait until the memory spell wears off." Jason said sourly.
"Yup, now please leave this time and never come back." Constantine said seriously.
"Fine." Jason said knowing there was nothing he could do to fix this. Jason actually left this time and brought Peter back to his motorcycle.
"Are you okay?" Jason asked as Peter went quiet.
"This is hell." Peter said and Jason sighed.
"I know this situation sucks but this still isn't hell." Jason reassured him.
"I've been banished to hell!" Peter yelled in distress.
"Not hell, a different universe. Calm down." Jason said and Peter sobbed dramatically into Jason's shoulder.
"Okay, are you even really crying? You're not in hell kid." Jason said, looking at Peter skeptically. Peter stopped sobbing and just pouted.
"Okay, let's go home." Jason said putting on his helmet and helped Peter put his helmet on. Jason made sure Peter was secure before starting his motorcycle and heading back to Crime Alley.
~~~~~~
Dick was freaking out. Dick was surprised that Damian was the one to suggest stalking Jason behind Bruce's back. That's not why he was freaking out though. They found out Jason went to visit Constantine and followed from a distance and everything was going perfectly. Until Jason called him.
"Grayson. What's wrong? Why does Todd want to kill you?" Damian asked him.
"Hehehe... good news is we figured out who Peter is." Dick said nervously.
"Who is he?" Tim asked.
"That's the bad news. He's a kid from another universe. That means Ra's knows nothing about him or he would have known nothing about him if I hadn't told him everything." Dick said in regret.
"Why would you do that?!" Tim yelled at him.
"I was just - I thought he already knew!" Dick defended himself weakly.
"Tt. You are such an idiot Grayson. Todd is going to kill you." Damian said, glaring at him.
"I know. I'm doomed." Dick said miserably.
"I'll bring popcorn." Tim said and Dick glared at him.
"Not helping. I need to somehow apologize without him killing me." Dick said, trying to think of ways to make amends.
"Tt. You could always kill Grandfather." Damian suggested.
"I can't just kill him on my own and how would that even help anyhow?" Dick asked, looking at Damian skeptically.
"It would ensure Grandfather is no longer a threat." Damian said seriously.
"Yeah but I would have to make sure that they wouldn't be able to revive him. Besides, I'm not going to kill your grandfather." Dick said, shaking his head.
"Why not? We could incinerate his body and make Superman throw his ashes into the sun." Tim said and Dick scoffed.
"That could work but no, no, no, no! B taught us better than that. We're not killing anyone." Dick said and Tim and Damian frowned.
"Jason will still kill you." Tim pointed out.
"Fine but we're getting help and no one tell B!" Dick yelled at Tim and Damian nodded excitedly.
Chapter 7: The Death of the Demon's Head
Chapter Text
Peter was angry. He was banished to another universe because of course he got banished to another universe! That's why he's bad at history and everything feels wrong! He's in another freaking universe!
Peter wanted to strangle Strange and make him pay for sending him into another stupid universe! That and Strange fucking de-aged him! He didn't want to be ten again! He didn't want to go through high school again! He doesn't even remember going through high school but he doesn't want to do it again!
Peter managed to make it back to the apartment before his vision started going green.
"Hey, you need to breathe kid. Your eyes are going green. Why don't you punch this." Jason said, bringing him over to a punching bag. Peter punched the bag once and it went crashing into the wall. Jason looked between the bag and Peter then gulped in fear.
"Shit." Jason said then quickly called someone. In a moment's notice someone with a cape was there.
"Peter hit him, he's indestructible." Jason said as Peter's vision was still green. Peter let the green take over and punched this person in the gut using all of his strength. Peter kept punching him over and over and the man didn't even flinch.
"When did I become a free punching bag?" The caped person asked, looking at Jason.
"Since that." Jason said motioning to the punching bag that was through the wall.
"Okay, and how long have you known this kid had super strength?" The caped man asked.
"Since ten seconds ago." Jason said and the caped man nodded then put a steady hand on Peter's shoulder. Peter punched him again. Peter then slowly stopped and started crying as he regained his vision.
"I'm sorry." Peter apologized tearfully.
"It's okay." The caped man crouched then brought him into a hug. Peter sobbed into the indestructible man's chest not sure why he felt safe with him but hugging him tightly anyway. The caped man picked him up and Peter blushed in embarrassment, still trying to stop crying.
"Peter, this is Superman. Supes this is Peter. He's from another universe and has amnesia." Jason introduced them.
"Nice to meet you Peter." Superman said and Peter looked down in guilt.
"I'm sorry for punching you." Peter apologized guiltily.
"It's perfectly fine. I can take it. Are your fists okay?" Superman worried about him. Peter looked at his fists and noticed they were a little bruised.
"They're fine." Peter said, still embarrassed.
"Why were you so angry, kid?" Superman asked him.
"I was angry at a guy in my universe for banishing me here. I miss my friends. I'll never see them again." Peter tried not to cry but was already tearing up again. Superman just held him and rubbed circles into his back.
"Sorry Superman." Peter apologized to him again as he got himself together.
"It's okay. I'm fine, not even bruised." Superman reassured him.
"How did you get here so fast?" Peter asked curiously.
"I have super speed and strength too." Superman said, still holding him.
"Can you put me down now?" Peter asked in embarrassment. Superman chuckled and did so gently.
"Are you okay now? Got all that rage out?" Jason questioned him. Peter nodded looking at the punching bag in shame. "Good." Jason said then scooped him up into a hug.
"What are you doing?!" Peter yelped in confusion.
"Hugging you and letting you know this doesn't mean I'll kick you out." Jason said and Peter smiled.
"Thanks." Peter relaxed in Jason's hold and hugged him back.
"Things seem to be settled here. Call if you ever need me again." Superman said, smiling at them.
"Will do and maybe keep an ear out." Jason said and Superman nodded.
"Will do." Superman said then went out the window and flew away. Peter watched him go in awe.
"He can fly." Peter said in surprise and amazement.
"Yeah, that's Superman for you." Jason chuckled.
"Is he a superhero?" Peter asked excitedly. "Did I just punch a superhero?" Peter asked in horror.
"Yes and yes you did but he's indestructible. It's okay." Jason calmed him down.
"I hope he isn't mad at me." Peter said in fear.
"He's not mad at you. It's okay." Jason comforted him.
"Wait, how did he know to come here? Did you call him? You know a superhero?" Peter asked in surprise.
"And that's enough questions for now. Let's have dinner." Jason said, picking him up.
"What? No! How do you know a superhero? Are you a superhero?" Peter asked curiously.
"I'm not a superhero kid. I don't even have any powers." Jason said, putting Peter down on a chair at the counter. Peter looked at him skeptically.
"How do you know Superman then?" Peter asked in suspicion as Jason started to get out ingredients to make dinner.
"My father is Bruce Wayne, he throws galas and charities. Sometimes Superman shows up to help with the charities and raise money for a good cause. We've only ever talked a few times but he gave our family a way to contact him if we were ever in trouble. Since we're famous, people like to kidnap us to try and get money." Jason explained and Peter frowned in disappointment and worry.
"Your dad is a billionaire, why do you have a job?" Peter asked in confusion.
"I work at one of B's companies. Wayne Tech." Jason said and Peter looked at him in excitement.
"Can you take me some time? I want to see what you build!" Peter said excitedly.
"No. My job involves keeping a lot of secrets. Secrets I can't tell you." Jason said and Peter pouted.
"But I won't tell anyone." Peter tried to convince him.
"No Peter. You're not going to work with me." Jason said sternly, glaring at him. Peter looked away from him pouting.
"I don't see what the big deal is. It's just a tech company." Peter mumbled out angrily.
"An important tech company. Now, no more questions about my job. Are you going to help with dinner?" Jason asked and Peter reluctantly nodded and helped Jason make dinner.
~~~~~~
"You want to do what?!" Beast boy yelled at Nightwing.
"I refuse to repeat myself." Nightwing said, standing tall.
"Why do you think this is a good idea?" Conner asked, baffled.
"Because the alternative is Red Hood killing me. Are you guys with me or not?" Nightwing asked, crossing his arms.
"I mean I guess but can we please call in more help? I don't think this is enough to take down the LOA." Aqualad said nervously.
"Don't worry. We still have a few more people to get." Red Robin reassured them.
"Who else are you involving in your murder plan?" Beastboy asked in worry.
"One man who is going to hate us. So everyone try and stay on your best behavior." Nightwing said.
"We are literally going to murder someone. I don't think this will count as anyone's best behavior." Miss Martian said flatly.
"Zatanna, is there anything we can bring as a peace offering?" Nightwing asked desperately.
"Whiskey." Zatanna said, sighing.
"Wait, who are we getting help from?" Wally asked in worry.
"I don't like where this is going." Artemis said in worry.
"Come on guys, if we're going to kill an evil sorcerer we need a powerful warlock." Nightwing said confidently.
"Wait, wait, wait, wait! You're not seriously talking about who I think you're talking about." Wally said in alarm.
"Yup, let's go get the best whiskey in the world and get some help from our favorite warlock." Nightwing said, sounding unhinged.
"Hold who are we getting after the mad warlock?!" Wally asked, more alarmed.
"Part B of the plan." Nightwing chuckled.
"We're going to trick Superman into throwing Ra's' ashes into the sun." Red Robin said excitedly.
"I think this is a great plan." Conner said liking this idea.
"Great! Remember we are keeping this a secret from Batman! Whatever happens no one tell Batman!" Nightwing said seriously.
"Don't tell me what?" Batman came through the Zeta Tube and Nightwing tensed.
"Hey, B, what are you doing here?" Nightwing asked, chuckling nervously.
"Nightwing is going to buy alcohol!" Wally yelled.
"Nightwing whatever you are planning you're not allowed to give alcohol to minors." Batman said glaring at him. Nightwing stared at him and nodded.
"Okay, I promise no alcohol I get will go to minors." Nightwing said, nodding. Batman looked at each of them skeptically before sighing.
"I came here to give Young Justice a mission. Will that be a problem or should I give this mission to someone else?" Batman asked, raising an eyebrow at Nightwing.
"I need them." Nightwing said seriously.
"I'll give you three days." Batman said and Nightwing smiled widely.
"Thank you!" Nightwing thanked him.
"I am going to regret this later." Batman said then left them alone.
"Cool! To the store everybody!" Nightwing said and they all traveled together in the jet.
~~~~~~
John never wanted to see a bat again. Nightwing bought him whiskey though and it wasn't the cheap stuff either.
"What do you want?" John asked, accepting the whiskey.
"We need your help killing Ra's al Ghul." Nightwing said and John stared at him. John then looked at the whiskey, opened it then took a swig.
"Fine, but only because I know you kids will die without me." John agreed reluctantly.
"You'll help us?" Nightwing asked excitedly.
"Yes, now do you have an actual plan?" John asked, getting together his spell books.
"Well I have part of a plan." Nightwing said nervously.
"Okay, do you at least have a meeting place?" John asked.
"Yes! Follow us!" Nightwing said excitedly and John followed him reluctantly. Nightwing brought him into a private jet and John saw everyone Nightwing gathered.
"You know I'm not usually the one for strategy but Ra's is evil and you guys know nothing about magic. So everyone listen up. Ra's' base is extremely protected by a bunch of assassins. You guys will deal with them. I will deal with Ra's. Killing him wasn't really on my plans but I'm the only one to match his magical abilities and I'm sure one of the demons I sold my soul to will be happy to hear I've taken down Ra's. He's almost hated in the magic world as much as me." John explained boredly.
"We get it, he's evil. How are we going to take him down?" Nightwing asked impatiently.
"I'll take him down. You guys will go after his assassins. I'll give everyone a protection stone so you guys aren't cursed or anything. If you get killed, come to me and I'll try and revive you before you're permanently dead. I will make us a portal to their base so we can come in quietly. You can take out the assassins however you prefer but after you're done make sure I'm not dead and call upon this number if I am." John said, handing over a piece of paper to Red Robin.
"This isn't a number." Red Robin said, looking down at the summoning sigil in confusion.
"Just bleed on it and slap it against the floor." John said and Red Robin took a picture of it.
"Wait, why does he get the number?" Aqualad asked in indignation.
"Because out of all of you he's the one with the most natural magic. Now that's all the advice I'm giving you all, you have to plan how to take down the assassins while I make sure these stones will actually protect you." John said, already done with this whole situation.
"Okay, since Constantine's plan is to not die and come to him if you do. Let's figure out a plan on how to not die." Nightwing said and John stopped listening.
This was such a dumb idea. If he can't kill Ra's he's going to be dragged to hell and tortured forever. That is if Red Robin can't properly call his backup plan. John really hopes he doesn't need his backup plan. John knew he could probably defeat Ra's al Ghul but he could never be too careful when planning to murder someone. Especially someone who's been revived as much as Ra's has. He'll need to bring his A game.
John made sure he enchanted the rocks enough to protect the kids from everything including physical violence as well. John then passed them out and read through his spell books to figure out what spells he should use to take down Ra's.
His only goal was to kill Ra's. It sounded simple but Ra's is a skilled assassin and John needs to be able to properly defend himself.
John read through his spells and smiled as he found the perfect one to use and it was a simple spell but it would be extremely effective.
"Are you all ready yet?" John asked as he was now properly prepared to kill Ra's al Ghul.
"Almost. We just need a few minutes to stretch before we go." Nightwing said and John nodded.
"Alright." John said and decided to stretch himself to properly prepare.
"Everyone is ready now." Aqualad told him.
"Alright everyone, don't die." John opened up a portal to a closet in Ra's' castle then went through. John made sure everyone was through before closing it and opening another portal.
"Don't follow me." John whispered then walked through the portal and closed it before anyone could follow him.
"Warlock, what are you doing here?" Ra's questioned him, noticing his entrance. Four guards of his also noticed and pointed their weapons at him.
"Oh you know, finally following orders." John sighed.
"From who?" Ra's asked.
"I think you know." John said and Ra's called off his guards.
"I will enjoy killing you." Ra's said getting out his sword as the room emptied out.
"Yeah, me too." John chuckled then summoned his own sword made of green flames.
"You're really going to use that?" Ra's laughed at him.
"Sort of." John threw his sword in the air then a green spirit appeared catching the sword mid air.
"I brought help from someone who really hates you." John said and Ra's took a step back in fear.
"F-father?" Ra's stuttered out and John took the moment to cast a spell underneath his breath. John finished the spell and Ra's fell to his knees starting to cough out Lazarus water.
"W-What did you do to me?" Ra's asked then vomited Lazarus water all over the floor.
"Distracted you so I could do this." John said, then drew a symbol with his blood and activated it. Ra's immediately started to age in front of him, becoming weak and frail.
"I am not exactly permitted to use any death magic on the living but I don't think he'll mind if I just kill you the normal way." John picked up Ra's' sword then sliced Ra's' throat open. Ra's convulsed on the ground and John made sure he wasn't near any Lazarus water.
"Now comes the hard part." John said to himself as he watched Ra's bleed out. Ra's' body started to glow and John took a step back and started chanting trying to stop this before it could get worse. Ra's' neck wound stopped bleeding and Ra's got out a sword that was glowing green.
"And worse it gets." John said and did his best to fight off Ra's al Ghul's ghost that was currently possessing his own body.
~~~~~~
Tim decidedly wasn't freaking out. After they exited the closet they split into two teams to try and take out all the assassins quietly. Eventually they did raise the alarm though and Tim had to fight for his life.
Tim wasn't panicking though because he had his brothers and his friends beside him and they were winning.
They all saw a huge blast of green light in the distance though and knew Constantine was fighting Ra's al Ghul. Tim and his team made their way over trying to defeat anyone they came across. They soon destroyed everyone in their path and met up with the others. They all headed towards the room where Constantine was fighting Ra's and hid behind some rubble as a huge blast of green flame flew past them.
"Can you tell if Constantine is still alive?" Tim asked Miss Martian.
"He still has thoughts but I am not sure that counts as still alive." Miss Martian talked in his head and Tim looked at Constantine. Constantine was burned badly and was glowing with golden magic flowing through him. His skin was cracked with golden light coming out of it and his eyes were glowing brightly. Ra's was on the other side of the room floating in the air and looking the same way but glowing green instead of gold.
"Should I call the number?" Tim asked, not sure what to do.
"He's not dead yet, I don't think." Conner said watching the fight.
"Let's make sure no assassins interrupt this fight. Robin, you stay here with Red Robin and protect him. Red Robin, you call that number if Constantine dies." Dick said seriously.
"Got it." Tim said and watched as Constantine blasted Ra's with a golden light. Ra's got thrown back into the ground. Constantine then grabbed Ra's sword that he dropped and stabbed Ra's through the chest. Ra's screamed out in pain then Constantine started saying a spell.
"No! You will- not- kill- me!!!" Ra's yelled out, convulsing. A bright light engulfed Ra's then his body went limp and ceased to glow.
"Is he dead?" Tim asked in shock.
"For now, what did you say you wanted to do with his body?" Constantine asked, looking over at him.
"Incinerate it then get Superman to throw it into the sun." Tim said, walking up to him cautiously.
"Yeah, I have a better, quicker idea." Constantine said then took a swig from his flask.
"You still got that number kid?" Constantine asked him. Tim nodded, showing it to him. Constantine took it then cut his wrist.
"Alright, everyone either hide now or bow." Constantine said and most everyone hid while Tim bowed in confusion. Constantine bowed then slammed the paper down on the ground after he bled on it.
At first nothing happened Tim was almost convinced nothing was going to happen then Constantine looked up at the air and a loud static sound filled up the area. Tim winced as the static persisted and for some reason he felt absolutely terrified. Constantine stood and then Ra's' body dissapeared before his eyes. The glowing sword also disappeared. Tim stayed bowing until the static went away.
"Okay, Ra's has no way of getting back to the living realm now. You kids want Batburger?" Constantine asked them. They all nodded and agreed. Constantine opened up a portal there and they were all quick to go through it.
Chapter 8: Magic!
Chapter Text
Duke was just enjoying having a batburger with Cass and Steph when a portal opened up beside him and his brothers along with the Young Justice League tumbled out. Constantine walked through the portal then closed it.
"Nightwing, you're buying." Constantine said, grabbing Dick by the back of the neck and hoisted him up from off the ground and onto his feet.
"Why can you do that?" Dick said in embarrassment, glaring at Constantine.
"Because you're a child." Constantine said doing the same thing to Tim.
"I am twenty four." Dick said, crossing his arms.
"Are you buying or not?" Constantine asked, reaching for Damian then taking his hand back when Damian flinched away. Constantine offered his hand instead and Damian glared at him but reluctantly took it allowing Constantine to help him up.
"I'll pay for you guys." Duke said and Constantine looked at him then walked up to him. Duke gulped in fear, Constantine looking pissed off and tired.
"You're one of Wayne's kids, yeah?" Constantine asked. Duke nodded.
"Good, you all can get as much as you want Wayne is paying." Constantine told the team and they all celebrated.
"Come on, kid." Constantine led the way to the back of the line and Duke followed him as everyone started to order.
"So, who were you guys fighting?" Duke asked nervously, still a bit intimidated by Constantine.
"Ra's al Ghul." Constantine said and Duke tensed.
"Is everyone okay?" Duke worried looking at anyone for injuries.
"No one is dead, except Ra's." Constantine said and Duke looked at him in surprise.
"So… Ra's is a super bad guy." Duke chuckled, not really sure if Constantine knew his secret identity.
"Yup." Constantine said, yawning. Duke looked at his siblings in worry. They were reveling in their victory though and getting their drinks.
"Are you okay?" Duke asked as he saw the burn marks on Constantine's coat.
"I'm fine, kid." Constantine said and Duke went quiet.
He wanted to ask what happened. Constantine probably wouldn't tell him the story though. Constantine wasn't known for giving detailed reports.
Duke paid for their meals with one of Bruce's cards after Constantine ordered.
"Thanks kid. Stay safe out there." Constantine ruffled his hair and Duke looked at him in offence.
"Don't mention it." Duke said and went back to Steph and Cass.
"So what happened?" Stephanie asked him.
"I think they attacked the LOA and Ra's is dead. I'm not sure for how long but for now." Duke shrugged.
"Do you think they somehow made it so Ra's couldn't come back to life?" Stephanie asked, watching as everyone ate together, celebrating happily.
"Maybe." Duke said, watching Damian carefully.
Damian was smiling and leaning slightly against Constantine. Constantine was smiling as well and actually seemed to be telling the story of how he took down Ra's. Duke listened from a distance but was really watching how Damian, Dick, and Tim were treating Constantine. They were all now looking up to Constantine and all surrounding him like they would surround Bruce. Constantine just chuckled and let them lean into him.
"Can you stay with us for just one more thing?" Dick was asking Constantine in a pleading voice.
"It better not be another murder mission." Constantine seriously.
"It's not, I promise. Come on John, please?" Dick pleaded.
John? When does Dick call Constantine, John?
"Fine, but I'm not fighting anyone." Constantine agreed.
"Yes! Thank you!" Dick hugged Constantine and Constantine actually hugged him back.
"What are we doing?" Constantine asked.
"We just need you to tell Jason that Ra's is really dead." Dick said, still leaning on Constantine.
"Yeah, I have video but it got all staticy when you made Ra's' body disappear." Tim said, leaning on Constantine's other side.
"Are you really sure Grandfather is gone?" Damian asked, climbing up onto Constantine's lap.
"One hundred percent. Ra's is never coming back." Constantine reassured him. Damian smiled proudly and Duke was baffled.
Damian never got that close to anyone. The only people Damian ever voluntarily sat in the lap of was Bruce and Dick.
Damian surrounded himself in Constantine's trench coat looking very pleased with himself. Tim immediately noticed and got under Constantine's trench coat as well.
"Be careful with that." Constantine chuckled as Tim found a book in Constantine's trench coat and opened it up.
"What is this?" Damian asked, grabbing a small vial of glowing red petals.
"A very special and very extinct plant. It's used to ward off ghosts." Constantine told him.
"Duke what are you doing?" Dick asked him and Duke looked at him in surprise, not even noticing that he was slowly walking towards them.
"Can I sit with you?" Duke asked pleadingly.
"Fine, Duke, meet John. John, this is Duke." Dick introduced them properly.
"We've met. You're the Wayne who paid for our meal." John said and Duke nodded.
"Hello I'm Stephanie and this is Cassandra can we sit by you too?" Stephanie asked, introducing herself.
"Sure." John shrugged and looked down at Damian as he held another vial up to him.
"That's holy water blessed by a real priest. It helps weaken demons when I'm excorising them." John informed Damian. Damian smiled then showed him another vial with flowers in it.
"That's wolfsbane. It works great against werewolves and it makes a pretty good poison as well." John said, showing Damian a different vial that had a purple liquid inside it.
"Can anyone learn magic?" Tim asked in wonder.
"Pretty much. It comes more naturally to some more than others." John said, smiling down at him.
"Can you teach me magic?" Tim asked excitedly.
"Father says we are not allowed to learn magic. Tt." Damian said glaring at Tim.
"Yeah, B says it's too dangerous and unpredictable." Dick said, also sending a glare towards Tim.
"It can be dangerous but it's hardly unpredictable. If you know what you're looking at you can easily predict what a spell is doing or has done." John said, looking annoyed.
"Why is B so against magic then?" Duke asked curiously.
"No idea. Maybe you should ask him." John said passively.
"Cass said that B said it's because magic always comes with a price." Stephanie spoke up for Cass.
"It does but the price isn't always your soul and rarely is it that dramatic." John said ruffling Tim's hair.
"So you will teach me?" Tim asked excitedly.
"We'll see." John said and Damian waved another vial in his face.
"Be careful with that. That's fairy dust. It's very volatile. Mainly used in fae summoning spells. Stop rifling through my pockets you little weasel." John said, poking Damian's nose. Damian smiled huffing but put the vials back into John's pockets.
"It's getting late. When are we seeing Jason?" John asked as Damian yawned and wrapped himself more in John's trenchcoat.
"I would say as soon as possible but we can wait until tomorrow." Dick said seeing Tim also yawn and snuggle into John's side.
"Alright, I guess I'm keeping these two. Good night." John said, picking up both Tim and Damian then walking through a portal. The portal closed before anyone else could follow. Duke looked at the now empty seat where Constantine used to be in alarm.
"What are we going to tell B?" Duke asked in panic.
"Nothing, B will not find out that we killed Ra's." Dick said sternly.
"Agreed and not what I was talking about. What are we going to say happened to Robin and Red Robin!" Duke yelled out in alarm. Dick opened his mouth then closed it and looked away in thought.
"We could say they're sleeping over at my apartment." Dick said slowly.
"You think B will believe that?" Duke asked him.
"Well he's going to have to because I don't think they're coming back." Dick said sort of alarmed as well.
"Not it!" Duke yelled and quickly ran out of Batburger.
~~~~~~
Bruce stared at Dick skeptically then brought up Tim's and Damian's location on the Batcomputer. They were in Gotham but not in an apartment building that Dick had a room in.
"Where are my sons?" Bruce asked angrily.
"I rented out an apartment in that building... under a fake name." Dick said and Bruce huffed.
"Who has them?" Bruce asked angrily.
"I do. I have them. In that building." Dick said and Bruce glared at him.
"They aren't in any danger, I promise." Dick said seriously.
"Why won't you tell me who they are with?" Bruce asked angrily.
"Because they're sleeping. I don't want you to wake them up." Dick said. Bruce growled then checked their vitals.
"Fine, but you will tell me in the morning." Bruce gave in as he knew his kids were safe and asleep. Dick wouldn't lie to him if they were in actual danger.
"Also Jason called, Peter isn't Ra's' son he's from another universe. I gotta go bye!" Dick said quickly, leaving swiftly.
"What?" Bruce said, still processing that mess of words Dick spat at him.
Jason called... Peter isn't Ra's' son? And he's... he can't have heard that right. Because it sounded like Dick said Peter was from another universe but that was... likely? How likely is that? No one has any information on him. He came out of nowhere and had memory problems. Tim said he was terrible at history, maybe because he doesn't have the same history. There's no way he came from the sky because he was found in a cave so it's unlikely he's alien.
Another universe... how the hell did they find that out? How did they come to that conclusion? There's some piece of the puzzle that he's missing.
Bruce looked at Tim's and Damian's location again and was glad to see they haven't moved.
It's like it's staring at him in the middle of the face! What's he missing? He feels like it should be obvious!
Bruce huffed in frustration and went to bed unable to focus.
It has been a few days since he slept. Maybe he just needs some sleep. He can find out what's bothering him in the morning.
~~~~~~
Jason put Peter to bed and made sure he actually fell asleep before heading out as Red Hood. It's been a few days since his threat to Dick. He hasn't been able to find Dick yet and properly kill him for telling Ra's about Peter.
Instead Jason had Barbara help him build up an identity for Peter. Jason has once again tried to talk Peter into going to school. Peter still refuses adamantly but is less upset at the history books Jason is making him read for when Jason does eventually enroll him in school.
Peter hasn't been dealing with the fact that he's in a new universe. Peter still thinks this is some version of hell and Jason is failing to convince him that this isn't hell. Jason doesn't even know why Peter is against the whole different universe thing. Jason thinks Peter might be in denial.
Peter still doesn't remember his past but there are moments where he'll just space out then start crying. Jason knows Peter is remembering his past slowly but whenever Jason asks Peter just shuts down. Jason has been doing his best to comfort Peter and help him through his memories though.
Peter refused to go outside again but was always looking out the window and glaring. Jason was trying to keep him busy by reading history books to him and getting him games but more often than not Peter spent his time lost in his memories or glaring out the window.
Tonight he was going to find Dick and make him pay. Jason was furious at Dick. How dare he tell Ra's about Peter and put his kid in danger!
Jason found Dick hiding in one of his safe houses in Blüdhaven. Jason climbed in the window and Dick immediately tensed up and scrambled for the door.
"Get back here you coward!" Jason yelled, chasing him down the hall.
"Wait! Wait! Please stop! Red Hood! Ahh!" Dick yelled out as Jason shot at him. Dick jumped out the window and Jason was hot on his heels.
"How fucking dare you!!!" Jason yelled at him as they raced across the rooftops.
"I wasn't thinking I'm sorry!!! Ah!" Dick yelped as Jason cornered him.
"Wait, no! I fixed it!" Dick yelled out facing him. Jason ran at him angrily.
"I fixed it, I fixed it I swear!" Dick yelled out and they started fighting hand to hand combat.
"What do you mean you fixed it?!" Jason asked furiously.
"I killed Ra's!!!" Dick yelled and Jason froze mid punch.
"You what?" Jason asked in disbelief.
"Well, technically Constantine killed Ra's but it was my idea." Dick admitted and Jason looked at him in surprise then stood down.
"Where is he?" Jason asked already on his way to Constantine's apartment.
"No! You can't disturb him!" Dick yelled out getting in his way.
"Why not?!" Jason asked angrily.
"Because Red Robin fell asleep on him!" Dick yelled and Jason paused. Jason sighed then glared at Dick.
"I swear you can question him all you want in the morning. Just please leave him alone tonight." Dick pleaded.
"Fine, but I will question him." Jason said seriously.
"In the morning." Dick said and Jason nodded.
"In the morning." Jason reluctantly agreed and made his way back to Crime Alley.
Jason had no idea how he was going to explain this to Peter or if he should. Right now Peter was in the dark about all his more illegal activities during the night and he can't just openly interrogate Constantine about killing someone. Much less Constantine killing someone Dick asked him to kill. Peter was going to think he was part of the mob.
Jason could leave Peter with one of his brothers or sisters. But then Peter might call them demons and try to attack them. Given what happened with Batman there's no guarantee that someone won't get hurt.
Could he leave Peter alone? No, absolutely not. Peter might remember something about his past and freak out and Jason won't be there to calm him down.
There is one last option. Take Dick's word and trust that he's telling the truth. Jason liked this option the least.
Maybe he didn't have to leave Peter with one of his siblings. Maybe he can just have one of his siblings distract Peter for a while. Yeah if his siblings can safely distract Peter with a game then Jason can interrogate Constantine in another room. There we go, Peter's innocence saved.
Now all he has to do is introduce Peter to his siblings without any fights breaking out and make sure his siblings don't tell Peter about their vigilante lifestyle. That seems achievable.
Jason went back to his apartment to check on Peter and was glad to see him fast asleep. Jason decided to head in early so he could be ready in the morning.
Jason woke up to Peter cries and was quick to check on him. Peter was crying in his sleep. Jason joined him in bed and held him close, comforting him quietly. Peter held onto him and slowly stopped crying. Jason fell back asleep and when he woke again it was morning.
"G'morning." Peter yawned awake stretching out his limps.
"Good morning Peter, we have some plans this morning." Jason said getting up.
"We do? What are we doing today?" Peter asked, getting up too.
"We are going to go visit Constantine again." Jason said, getting ready.
"Huh? Why? I thought Constantine couldn't help me." Peter said in confusion, going into the bathroom with Jason to brush his teeth.
"I need to talk to Constantine about something different. Completely unrelated." Jason said vaguely after he was done brushing his teeth.
"What about?" Peter asked curiously.
"That is a secret. My brother Tim is at Constantine's place right now so you can play with him while I talk to Constantine. You remember Tim, right?" Jason asked, going back to his room to change into new clothes.
"The not demon who broke into our home." Peter said and Jason chuckled.
"Yeah, that's him. Not a demon." Jason said as he finished getting new clothes on. Peter looked at him skeptically, not changing yet and just sitting by the window.
"My siblings aren't demons." Jason said and Peter sighed, glaring out the window.
"I guess." Peter said, still sounding skeptical.
"Come on Peter. It's time you stop glaring out of that window anyway." Jason said, picking him up.
"I don't want to go out where the demons are." Peter pouted.
"Not demons, kid. Let's get you dressed." Jason said putting him down and getting him a change of clothes. Peter reluctantly took the clothes then went into the bathroom to change.
Jason knew Peter liked his privacy. Peter always wore long sleeves and never changed in front of him. Jason knew the kid had scars and he hated that Peter had so many and felt the need to cover them up.
Peter didn't take long to change and Jason made sure Peter got a big breakfast then together they headed to Constantine's place. They arrived at Constantine's apartment and Jason knocked on his door.
"I thought I told you to never come back." Constantine said as he answered the door.
"I have some questions to ask, privately." Jason said and Constantine sighed but let them in. Peter tensed when he saw Tim, Damian, and Dick arguing in Constantine's living room.
"Dick, didn't expect to see you here." Jason greeted his brother.
"I didn't plan on being here until these two bothered me for a change of clothes so they could stay here. I was just trying to convince them to come home." Dick said glaring at Tim and Damian.
"John is going to teach us magic." Tim said glaring back at Dick.
"Tt. It is not even dangerous magic." Damian pointed out as Dick glared at him.
"Demon brat this is Peter." Jason said then cursed himself in his head as Peter tensed. "He's not a demon! That was a nickname! No attacking anyone." Jason said, quickly picking Peter up.
"But you said he was a demon!" Peter yelled back in fear.
"It is a nickname. Damian isn't an actual demon. Damian is human just like us and Tim and Dick." Jason said, still holding Peter tightly. Peter looked at Damian skeptically before slowly relaxing.
"He's not a demon. He's alive. We are all alive." Jason reassured Peter. Peter huffed.
"I won't attack anyone." Peter said and Jason slowly put him down.
"Why?" Damian asked, tilting his head at Peter.
"Died in the pits and has amnesia, first impression was the sewers with Waylon then Batman. Everyone caught up? Peter, you promise not to attack anyone?" Jason asked.
"I promise." Peter said reluctantly.
"Good, now do you have any games, Constantine?" Jason asked Constantine. Constantine rolled his eyes then got out Monopoly.
"Here kids, play Monopoly." Conatantine said, handing them the game.
"Where are you going? Aren't you going to play with us?" Tim asked not sure why they were going to play Monopoly but was already fully on board.
"Maybe later, I need to have a talk with Jason." Constantine's voice was surprisingly soft.
"Should I come?" Peter asked curiously.
"No, this isn't about you. This is something else important. Why don't you try and get along with my siblings?" Jason asked Peter and Peter looked at Tim, Dick, and Damian skeptically. They were already setting up the board and Tim was organizing the money.
"Oh, okay." Peter said reluctantly.
"It's going to be okay, I just need to talk to Constantine privately." Jason reassured him.
"Okay." Peter said and hugged Jason before making his way over to the game board. Jason followed Constantine into the other room then closed and locked the door behind him. John sat in his comfy chair and Jason sat in the chair across from him. They sat in silence for a few moments until they heard the kids start to yell.
"So, did you really kill him?" Jason asked once he was sure Peter wasn't listening in.
"Yes, I killed him." Constantine said, nodding.
"Are you sure?" Jason asked in suspicion.
"I am one hundred percent sure." Constantine reassured him.
"How?" Jason asked, standing and pointing a gun at him.
"Jason, you can't threaten me with just a gun." Constantine waved his hand and suddenly Jason's gun was in his hand instead.
"Wha- how? Tell me the truth!" Jason yelled and Constantine stood up.
"Jason, Ra's al Ghul is dead and in the deepest pits of hell. He's never coming back." Constantine said seriously, looking straight into his eyes.
"You really killed him?" Jason asked much quieter.
"Yes. I did." Constantine said confidently and Jason hugged him.
"What are you doing?" Constantine asked, tensing up.
"Thank you." Jason said, letting him go.
"You're welcome. Now I think we should talk about that core of yours." Constantine said seriously and Jason froze.
"What are you talking about?" Jason asked in confusion.
"Your pit rage." Constantine said and Jason got more confused.
"What about it?" Jason asked defensively.
"Well you can't deal with it forever, let me help." Constantine offered.
"How?"
~~~~~~
Peter didn't trust any of Jason's siblings at first. As they played Monopoly though it was hard to say he wasn't having fun. He may not trust Jason's siblings but he was having fun with them. Then Peter's spider sense went off and he immediately looked towards the danger.
"Bat demon!!! Get away, bat demon!" Peter quickly got up and tried to kick the demon out the window. The bat demon caught his ankle though and pushed it up trying to trip him up. Peter did a backflip though and landed back on his own two feet. Peter tried to punch him but Batman caught his arm and flipped him onto his back and into the ground.
Peter groaned out in pain watching helplessly as the demon entered the apartment. Peter saw Dick Tim and Damian cower away from the demon and Peter huffed.
He will not let this demon hurt his family.
Peter then noticed the demon heading towards the door Jason was behind. Peter quickly got up and got in the demon's way punching his wrist away from the door knob.
"Stay away from my family, demon!" Peter yelled out, ready to fight him and watching for his next move.
"Move." The demon said, his voice deep and threatening.
"No." Peter refused and the demon glared at him.
"Dad!! The bat demon's back!!!" Peter yelled out when the bat demon didn't move. The demon tried to trip him up but Peter kicked the demon's leg back and tried punching the demon in the gut. The demon slammed his elbow down on Peter's arm though and Peter yelped out in pain as he heard his bone crack. Peter fell to the ground in pain and whimpered as the bat demon stood over him. Suddenly a shot went off and the demon winced, backing away from Peter.
"Stay away from my son." Jason said shooting the demon again and the demon retreated. Peter tried not to cry but was failing badly because he was in so much pain.
"What has he done to you?" Jason asked in worry and Peter just cried out in pain.
"What hurts?" Jason asked him gently. Peter tearfully rolled up his sweatshirt sleeve and showed him his arm. Jason gasped looking down at his arm in horror.
"I'm going to kill him." Jason said seriously his vision going green and climbing out the window after the demon.
"What happened?" Constantine asked, crouching down beside Peter.
"The bat demon came through the window. I couldn't defeat him." Peter cried out sadly.
"Was he the one to do this to your arm?" Constantine asked, gently holding Peter's injured arm. Peter nodded and Constantine looked absolutely furious.
"Alright, let's get you to a hospital." Constantine said and Peter shook his head.
"No, no hospitals." Peter said desperately.
He didn't want anyone to find out he was Spider-Man. They can't take his blood!
"Why not kid?" Constantine asked in confusion.
"Please no hospitals." Peter pleaded.
"Alright, no hospitals. I'm no doctor but I do know some healing spells. Are you okay with that?" Constantine asked him and Peter nodded.
"Tim, get my spell book with the white cover. Damian I need you to get the bright red glowing potion from my cabinet. Dick, get some ice and a paper towel." Constantine commanded and they were all quick to follow his instructions.
"Does anything else hurt?" Constantine asked Peter, gently picking him up.
"My back and head hurt a bit." Peter said, trying to stop crying. Constantine put him down on the couch and checked his back and head.
"Just bruised. This might feel warm but I promise it will help." Constantine said and Peter nodded. Constantine started saying a spell and Peter could feel the warm feeling Constantine was talking about. Once Constantine was done his head and back hurt a lot less.
"Thank you Constantine." Peter thanked him.
"You can just call me John, kid." John said and Peter smiled. Dick, Damian, and Tim brought back what John requested.
"Dick put some ice on his injury to help with the swelling." John commanded and Dick did so carefully. Peter winced but allowed Dick to help him.
"Tim and Damian, I need you to help me get these ingredients." John said, showing Tim and Damian his spell book.
"What language is that?" Tim asked in confusion.
"Right, okay just here." John did a quick spell on Tim and Damian.
"Woah, I can read it now." Tim said in amazement.
"Yes, now help gather the ingredients we need to heal Peter." John said and Damian and Tim nodded. Peter tried to stop crying as Dick stayed by his side.
"It's going to be okay. John's going to fix this." Dick reassured him.
"I'm sorry." Peter apologized tearfully.
"What in the world are you apologizing for?" Dick asked in pure confusion and concern.
"I wasn't able to stop him. I was too weak." Peter said tearfully.
"Kid, you don't have to apologize for that. The bat is a trained vigilante and years older than you. You don't have to feel bad for not being able to defeat him. You're eight." Dick said and Peter scowled.
"I'm ten and I was de-aged. I'm supposed to be eighteen." Peter defended himself.
"Right, but you still shouldn't beat yourself up over this. He's bigger than you and stronger than you." Dick said and Peter scowled again.
"I fought bigger though. I've fought stronger. Why can't I defeat him?" Peter asked sadly.
"You got de-aged and you lost your memories. You probably are just off your game because of that." Dick said and Peter huffed.
"I'm supposed to be better than this." Peter said, pouting.
"You are ten right now. You don't have to be better. Leave all the crazy threats to the grown ups like Nightwing and Superman." Dick said and Peter looked at him in confusion.
"Who's Nightwing?" Peter asked curiously.
"Another vigilante." Dick said and Peter scowled.
"Is he a demon too?" Peter asked.
"No, there's no demons here." Dick reassured him.
"Get out of the way, I need room." John said before Peter could respond and Peter looked at him in worry.
"It's going to be alright." John said, taking the ice away from Peter's arm then gently wiping a golden glowing liquid on his arm. John then started saying a spell and Peter whimpered as his arm hurt more and it felt like it was on fire. Peter started to cry again in pain. John held his arm still then poured a red liquid on top of the golden stuff. Peter winced again as his arm felt like it was being stabbed into.
"It's going to be okay, it's almost over." Tim whispered to Peter. Peter just cried as he felt his bone being stitched back together. After a few long agonizing minutes the pain finally subsided and John looked exhausted.
"Are you okay, kid?" John asked him, looking at him in worry. Peter nodded, actually feeling a lot better now. His arm still felt a bit tingly but it wasn't hurting anymore.
"Good, now don't you ever fight a demon again. No more fighting anyone. Got that kid?" John said seriously.
"Got it." Peter said, dipping his head guiltily.
"Now deal me in. Let's play some Monopoly." John said, sitting beside him. Peter smiled and they all started playing Monopoly again.
Chapter 9: Regret
Chapter Text
Fuck fuck fuck fuck he didn't mean to hurt Peter that badly. He was just trying to get the kid to stand down. He just wanted to get to Constantine and question him about Peter's origins. Jason is never going to forgive him for this. The kid called Jason dad! He has a grandson who thinks Batman is a dangerous demon and Jason will never let Bruce near the kid again. Fuck!
~~~~~~
When Jason heard Peter call out for his dad it took a second for him to realize Peter was talking about him. Then the words "bat demon" computed in his brain and he immediately opened the door ready to stop Peter from attacking B. He didn't expect to find Peter already on the ground crying out in pain. Jason saw B standing over Peter and immediately got out his gun and shot him.
"Stay away from my son." Jason said shooting B again as he barely backed off. Bruce retreated and Jason managed to check on Peter before his rage took over and he went after B with a vengeance.
"How fucking dare you!!!" Jason yelled as he shot at Bruce.
"Let me explain." Bruce said desperately.
"You hurt my kid!" Jason shot him in the shoulder again and Bruce winced.
"I didn't mean to hurt him that badly." Bruce tried defending himself.
"That badly?!" Jason asked furiously.
"Fuck." Bruce ran and Jason chased after him angrily. Jason caught up to him and pointed his gun at Bruce's head then pulled the trigger. Bruce flinched as the gun just clicked.
"You ever get near my son again and I will kill you." Jason said huffing in frustration.
"I'm sorry." Bruce apologized and Jason went back to Constantine's place to check on Peter.
The green left his eyes and he got worried as he realized he just left Peter alone with Constantine. Jason got back to Constantine's apartment and was surprised to find Peter happily playing Monopoly with Constantine, Dick, Tim, and Damian.
"Peter, are you okay?" Jason worried over him, gently rolling up Peter's sleeve to look at his arm.
"Yeah, I'm fine now. John healed me." Peter said happily, showing off his arm.
"I swear I will never let that demon hurt you again." Jason said, hugging him tightly.
"I thought you didn't believe I was in hell?" Peter said in confusion.
"I'm okay with you thinking B is a demon." Jason said, picking Peter up and holding him close.
"I'm sorry for calling you dad." Peter apologized to him sheepishly.
"It's okay, you can call me dad if you want." Jason said and Peter smiled, hugging him happily.
"It's Peter's turn. Can we have him back now?" Tim asked in annoyance.
"Right, of course. Let's play some Monopoly." Jason said sitting down and having Peter sit in his lap.
"Don't think I've forgotten about our conversation about your core." Constantine said, looking at Jason pointedly.
"Y-yeah. Right." Jason stuttered out very uncomfortable.
Constantine offered to heal his core and get rid of the pit madness. Constantine said it involved a long lengthy process because he would have to summon "he who shall not be named" and asking for help. Constantine even talked about getting a sacrifice and Jason shivered at the idea of pleading with some other worldly being.
"Are you okay?" Peter's voice cut through his thoughts and he looked down at him. Peter was looking at him in concern and determination like he was ready to fight someone for him.
"I'm fine." Jason reassured him. "Are you winning?" Jason asked and Peter nodded happily showing off all the properties he owned.
"Wow, how'd you manage to get so many?" Jason asked, Peter doing unusually well at Monopoly.
"He's a liar and a cheat." Dick huffed, glaring at Peter.
"I'm good at bartering." Peter said proudly.
"Tt." Damian huffed, looking frustrated.
"He's a menace." Tim said and Peter froze tensing up. Peter closed his eyes and Jason gently hugged him.
"I'm not... I don't mean to be... I was just trying to help." Peter whispered out sadly.
"It's okay, you're safe now. You're no longer there." Jason comforted him. Peter held onto him, whimpering quietly. Jason sent a glare towards Tim and Tim tensed.
"I-I'm sorry for calling you a-" Damian kicked Tim "-that. I'm sorry Peter." Tim apologized sincerely. Peter didn't give him an answer and just went quiet. Jason hugged Peter close, comforting him the best he could.
"Do you want to talk about this one?" Jason asked Peter gently. Peter shook his head just resting in Jason's arms, upset.
"Are you sure?" Jason asked and Peter didn't respond just hugging Jason tighter.
"Do you want to go home?" Jason asked and Peter shook his head.
"No? Do you want to keep playing Monopoly?" Jason asked and Peter shook his head again.
"Do you want to go to the other room away from everyone?" Jason asked and Peter shook his head again. Jason looked down at him unsure what to do.
"Here, let me." Constantine said and Jason gave him a questioning look. Constantine rolled his eyes and took Peter away from Jason. Peter huffed glaring at Constantine. Constantine just smiled and put a necklace on Peter. Peter froze for a few moments before smiling and hugging Constantine.
"Thank you." Peter said gratefully.
"Yeah don't mention it kid." Constantine said, patting his back.
"What the heck did you just do?" Jason asked angrily.
"Calm down. I just gave him something to help get rid of his headaches." Comstantine reassured him.
"Headaches?" Jason questioned him.
"Yeah, the spell that evil sorcerer put on him really messed with his head. It was hurting him every time he remembered a new memory." Constantine informed him.
"Why didn't you fix this earlier?" Jason asked angrily.
"Because I didn't have the spell memorized and I figured I would see you two again anyway." Constantine said, running a hand through Peter's hair. Peter leaned into the touch, relaxing in Constantine's hold.
"You're not keeping him." Jason said glaring at Constantine.
"Never said I would." Constantine said and Jason felt a flash of embarrassment for being so possessive.
"Is Peter okay?" Tim asked worriedly.
"No, he's not. I doubt he will be for a long while." Constantine said as Peter hugged him and refused to let go.
"What happened to him?" Damian asked, looking at Peter in worry.
"A lot. Come on Peter, let's go home." Jason said, glaring at his siblings. Peter refused to move though and held onto Constantine tighter.
"Peter?" Jason called out to him. Peter didn't move.
"What's wrong?" Jason asked him in worry.
"I'm a liar." Peter said, starting to shake.
"Peter, I didn't mean to call you that. I didn't actually mean it." Dick said in realization.
"What are you lying about kid?" Constantine asked him.
"I can't tell you." Peter said tearfully.
"Alright, what if I promise not to tell anyone?" Constantine asked and Peter looked at him skeptically.
"Promise? You're not allowed to tell anyone!" Peter said glaring at him.
"I promise, no one will know. We'll even go to the other room if you'd like." Constantine said and Peter nodded. Jason watched in confusion as Peter allowed Constantine to take him to the next room over and close the door.
"Why does he trust Constantine and not me?" Jason asked in distress.
"You do get scary when you're mad." Tim pointed out and Jason glared at him.
"Peter is not afraid of me." Jason said defensively.
"Are you sure? He was quick to cling to John." Tim chuckled.
"Yeah, so were you and Damian." Dick pointed out.
"Yeah, but that's because John said he would teach me magic." Tim defended himself.
"And what's your defense?" Jason asked Damian.
"I was just curious. Tt." Damian said, crossing his arms.
"You climbed into his lap and hid in his trenchcoat. You never do that with anyone." Dick said and Jason looked at him in surprise.
"Well... most people do not have a trenchcoat." Damian said defensively.
"You let him pick you up." Dick argued.
"Tt. I was tired." Damian huffed.
"Why do you trust him so much?" Jason asked in suspicion.
"Because he killed Grandfather! John did what Father would never do!" Damian yelled defensively. The room went silent and Jason looked away from him in thought.
"Okay, yeah, I understand that." Jason said, decidedly not mad at Constantine.
~~~~~~
John brought Peter to the next room over and gently set him down on the bed.
"I promise whatever it is I won't tell anyone, ever." John said seriously.
"I... I used to be a vigilante." Peter whispered out nervously.
"A vigilante? Really?" John asked in surprise.
"Please don't tell Jason." Peter pleaded desperately.
"Why not kid?" John asked in concern.
"Because last time my identity got out... I got banished." Peter said and John gently wiped away his tears.
"It's okay, I won't tell anyone. Why are you keeping this from Jason?" John asked in confusion.
"Because I'm afraid it will happen again. Please don't banish me." Peter pleaded, trying to get himself to stop crying.
"I won't ever banish you. I'll never let anyone hurt you like that again." John said, bringing him into a hug. Peter hugged back tearfully.
"Thank you John." Peter said sincerely.
"No problem. I have to ask though, do you still want to be a vigilante?" John asked and Peter wasn't sure how to answer that.
He should say yes right. With great power comes great responsibility. But Peter couldn't even defeat the bat demon. How was he supposed to be a vigilante with no gear or his suit? He didn't even have his webs on him.
"It's okay if you don't. You're eighteen. You should be worrying about college not being a superhero." John said and Peter hugged him again.
"I don't want to be a vigilante anymore. At least not right now. I want to train to be better. I have to defeat the bat demon. Then I can be a vigilante again." Peter said determinedly.
"I would love to see that. Make sure you train hard though or that bat demon will crush you. Also probably tell Jason." John said and Peter looked at him in surprise.
"You want me to tell Jason?" Peter asked nervously.
"Yeah, he's... well I'll let him tell you." John chuckled.
"Is he a superhero?" Peter asked quickly and John laughed. Peter frowned in confusion and disappointment.
"No, no he's not. I still think you should tell him though." John said, still smiling.
"I'll think about it. No telling anyone." Peter said glaring at him.
"I promise I will never tell anyone." John said seriously.
"Hmmg, alright." Peter said still glaring at him.
"I swear by my mother's grave I won't tell anyone you're a vigilante." John said and Peter stopped glaring.
"Can I talk to you about something else?" Peter asked as John stood up.
"Sure what is it?" John asked curiously.
"Uh... well... Jason doesn't talk about his dad very much. Who's Bruce Wayne?" Peter asked cautiously.
"A rich bugger with a messy reputation. Do you not have a phone?" John asked him and Peter pouted.
"Jason said I have to wait until I'm thirteen to get a phone."
"Okay here, have this. It's not a phone but you can use it to contact me anytime you want." John said, handing him a stone.
"This is a stone." Peter said flatly.
"A sending stone. Think of it like a walkie talkie with unlimited reach. I could be in a whole other dimension and I'd still hear you." John said, showing him his own stone.
"It really does that?" Peter asked skeptically.
"Yeah, just remember to say my name before you start speaking into the stone and it will send the message to my stone. I can do the same." John said and Peter looked at the stone skeptically.
"Alright, thanks John." Peter thanked him.
"No problem, think of it as a way to talk to me if you ever find yourself in a bind or want to talk about your past." John said and Peter smiled.
"I promise not to bother you too much." Peter said, realizing how important this gift was.
"You could never bother me kid. Now let's get back before Jason attempts knocking down the door." John chuckled, offering his hand. Peter happily took it and let John lead him back to the living room.
"Peter, are you okay?" Jason asked, immediately worried about him.
"I'm fine now." Peter reassured him.
"Good, thanks Constantine." Jason thanked John reluctantly.
"Yeah don't mention it. Want to finish our game of Monopoly?" John asked, looking down at Peter. Peter nodded and they all went back to playing Monopoly.
~~~~~~
Bruce wasn't crying. He was brooding in sadness. He didn't mean to hurt Peter. The kid was so small. Bruce replayed the memory of fighting his grandson over and over in his mind. Bruce winced as he remembered hearing the bone in Peter's arm crack. He broke his grandson's arm!
"Master Bruce, who shot you this time?" Alfred found him in the cave sadly taking care of his wounds.
"Jason." Bruce answered sadly.
"What happened this time?" Alfred asked, taking over.
"I hurt my grandson." Bruce said, hiding his face in his arm in shame.
"Grandson? Master Jason has a child?" Alfred said in surprise.
"I hurt my baby boy." Bruce cried in regret.
"Master Bruce, what happened?" Alfred asked worriedly. Bruce took a deep breath.
"Jason adopted the kid I found in the sewers and he mistook me for a demon and then I broke his arm on accident. Now Jason wants to kill me and I'll never see my grandson again." Bruce rattled off a brief explanation in misery.
"I have several questions." Alfred said, still trying to process that information.
"Peter woke up in a Lazuras pit and thought Gotham is hell because of Waylon. Dick saved the kid but apparently Jason stole him and the kid has amnesia. None of us have any information on him and Constantine said the kid was from another universe. I went over there to question Constantine but Tim, Damian, Dick, Peter, and Jason were all there for some reason. Peter immediately attacked me and I tried to get him to stand down. I hurt him. Jason shot me twice then chased me out the window. Jason also threatened to kill me if I ever got near Peter again." Bruce reported flatly.
"They were all there? Why?" Alfred asked.
"I don't know. They were playing Monopoly." Bruce said not really sure but not wondering.
"Constantine is a drunk. Why are they there?" Alfred asked, perplexed. Bruce rolled his eyes then thought about that.
Why were they all together at Constantine's place? What series of events could lead them to even contacting Constantine in the first place? Constantine definitely didn't reach out to them. They were all in their civilian clothes too. Why?
Bruce frowned and called Tim. Tim answered on the second ring.
"Why are you at Constantine's place?" Bruce asked skeptically.
"Because Constantine is cool." Tim said smoothly.
"What did you do?" Bruce asked in suspicion.
"Nothing, we just wanted to visit John." Tim said and Bruce tensed.
"Why is he John now? You and Damian better come home soon." Bruce said not liking how close his kids have gotten to Constantine.
"Don't worry we'll be home for dinner."
"Lunch."
"Lunch, yeah, that works too. Love you, bye!" Tim hung up on him and Bruce knew something was up.
"Tim called him John." Bruce said, upset.
"That is his first name."
"When did they get so close? My kids don't visit Constantine. I don't even think they work with Constantine that often." Bruce said sourly.
"Perhaps they have grown closer to Constantine over these past few days. They did turn off their trackers Friday night." Alfred pointed out.
"Yes but why Constantine? He's a drunk, a warlock, and a dangerous, unpredictable man. Why would they want to hang out with him?" Bruce asked, irritated.
"Perhaps you are judging Constantine too harshly."
"I am not. Constantine is nothing but trouble." Bruce huffed.
"Very well, I shall prepare lunch." Alfred walked back upstairs and Bruce sighed.
Bruce knew he was being a bit unfair towards Constantine. Constantine was a good warlock and a hero. A very short tempered, hatable hero. A hero nonetheless.
Bruce looked into Constantine once more but just saw the usual stuff.
Powerful warlock, unreliable, short tempered, terrible at filling out mission reports, unorganized, collects dangerous artifacts that look like junk, not afraid to kill people, unpleasant to be around in general and to top it all off he's a raging alcoholic. How could his kids ever want to stay around someone as unpleasant as John Constantine?
Bruce huffed in frustration looking at John's picture.
His stupid messy hair, his stupid hazel eyes, his ridiculous trenchcoat that he wears all the time. When does he wash that thing? Does he just wear it in the shower? Bruce wouldn't even be surprised if he found out John doesn't even wash up everyday. He looks so rugged and messy. Why would his kids want to stay around this mess of a human being?
Constantine isn't even afraid of him like everyone else is. Constantine is just annoyed by him and never listens to orders. The only reason Bruce hasn't fired Constantine is because they can't afford to lose him as an ally. Constantine may be annoying but he was powerful. So powerful in fact that Bruce would have a hard time taking him down if he ever went evil.
When it came to contingency plans Bruce has something for everyone. Everyone except Constantine. Everyone has their weaknesses, everyone can be defeated. Constantine is just human so in theory it wouldn't take much to take him down. Except for the fact that Constantine is a warlock and protected by mysterious forces. Bruce saw Constantine avoid death so many times. One time Constantine got shot through the heart and still managed to live.
Even when Constantine died he always managed to come back to life without fail. He didn't even use the Lazarus pits to revive himself. He just came back with no explanation.
"Sir, lunch is ready." Alfred said and Bruce sighed.
"Thanks Alfred." Bruce thanked him and reluctantly made his way upstairs for lunch. Bruce sat down at the dining table and was irked to see that Tim and Damian still weren't back.
"Duke, where are your brothers?" Bruce asked, wondering if Duke knew anything about Tim's and Damian's escapade.
"No idea last I heard they went to visit Constantine." Duke shrugged.
"Do you know why?" Bruce asked skeptically.
"Nope." Duke said and Bruce looked away from him unhappily. Then Tim and Damian walked in and sat down for lunch.
"Boys, why did you seek out Constantine?" Bruce asked, glaring at them both.
"We didn't seek him out." Tim said and Bruce raised an eyebrow at him.
"We just happened to meet him." Damian said and Bruce sighed.
"Why did you stay with Constantine?" Bruce asked in irritation.
"Because I believed we could gather great intel on him. Tt." Damian said and Bruce didn't believe him.
"And what did you learn about him?" Bruce asked anyway.
"We learned he can do magic." Tim said happily.
"Not new information. Anything else?" Bruce asked flatly.
"He knows how to heal a broken arm with magic and potions." Damian said proudly. Bruce tensed as he remembered how he broke Peter's arm.
"Is Peter okay?" Bruce asked worriedly.
"He is now." Tim said glaring at him.
"I didn't mean to hurt him." Bruce said in regret.
"Tt." Damian also looked pissed at him.
"Who's Peter?" Duke asked in curiosity. Bruce didn't answer him, just eating silently in regret.
"Guys? Is no one going to answer me?" Duke asked as Tim and Damian didn't answer either.
"Fine, I'll figure it out by myself." Duke stomped away and Bruce sighed deeply in regret. Dick then came through the door looking angry as Jason.
"He was just trying to protect us! You shouldn't have hurt him!" Dick yelled at him.
"I know, I'm sorry." Bruce apologized in regret.
"You're lucky John was able to heal him." Dick snapped at him.
"Why is Constantine John now?" Bruce asked furiously.
"He just is. We've bonded." Dick said, sticking his chin up.
"Over what?! Constantine is nothing but trouble!" Bruce yelled angrily.
"You take that back! John is amazing!" Dick yelled back.
"Amazing at what? He's an alcoholic and barely thinks before making any sort of decision!" Bruce pointed out.
"He is responsible, protective, kind, and caring!" Dick yelled and Bruce scoffed.
"I find that extremely hard to believe! You spent three days with him!" Bruce yelled angrily.
"Yeah and you spent none! You barely work with him and you hate each other!" Dick yelled just as angry.
"Well at least you got that right." Bruce huffed and stormed out of the room angrily.
Fuck. He got in another screaming match with Dick.
Bruce went down to the cave to brood and distract himself from his mistakes.
~~~~~~
"Are you guys okay?" Dick asked his siblings in worry.
He hated fighting with B in front of them.
Damian and Tim nodded and Dick sighed.
"I'm sorry, do you guys want to play a game?" Dick asked, wanting to distract himself and them. They nodded and Dick smiled.
"Let's finish eating first and we can play something together after." Dick said and they agreed.
"Do you think we can visit John again?" Tim asked timidly.
"Yeah, B may hate him but he still has done a lot for us. I don't think John would mind if we visited him again." Dick said, smiling at him.
"Will Father be okay?" Damian asked nervously.
"I'm sure he will. I'm sorry for fighting in front of you guys." Dick apologized guiltily.
"It's okay, B hurt Peter and he sort of deserves it." Tim chuckled slightly.
"You are forgiven." Damian said not liking that they fought but forgiving Dick.
"It's going to be okay. I'll talk things out with him later." Dick tried comforting them.
"You mean you'll fight again." Tim said sadly.
"N-No. I mean we might... no. I will talk things out. There will be no fighting." Dick said determinedly.
"Whatever you say Dick." Tim said, looking doubtful. Damian also looked away from him in sadness.
"Look, I know me and B never really get along. I promise this time though I won't raise my voice. I'll talk things out and if he yells I'll just walk away. I'm not going to fight him again." Dick said sincerely.
"Promise?" Damian said, glaring at him.
"I promise." Dick said and Damian smiled looking pleased.
"Okay." Tim said, still looking doubtful.
