Just found your Rest Stop AU and I’m OBSESSED
I’m so curious tho of what movie hiccup thinks of book hiccup when he gets to know him better. Also, what sorts of things do the dreamworld dragons crew do with book hiccup once he’s more settled in?
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Movie Hiccup and Book Hiccup are dragon-nerd buddies (Along with Fishlegs Ingerman)! Book Hiccup gets to infodump all about the kinds of dragons "back home" (and possibly also start working on the (in)complete book of Dragons) and Movie Hiccup gets to show him all the cool dragons they've got on and around Berk.
I feel like Book Hiccup would get a little bit starry-eyed at how great Movie Hiccup is at making things, and maybe he'd try apprenticing under him and Gobber for a day, to... rather disastrous results. Unfortunately, the skills involved in breaking and undoing dragon-traps do not translate to creating things of similar complexity. Thankfully nothing irreplaceable got destroyed, and all the fires got put out incredibly quickly, but "Rider the Red's" apprenticeship would not continue to the following day.
DreamWorks Hiccup, meanwhile, is just really fond of this kid and the way he cares so much about everyone from his dragon friends to people he's only just met to the dragons he hadn't met but who are trapped inside these new extra-vicious dragon traps.
They bond about being the sons of Fierce Viking Chiefs (Rider the Red calls his father Boundless the Hairy). He listens to the sparing amount of stories he tells about his home and the far more frequent Concerning Tidbits Rider lets slip when he's talking about the dragons he's used to. He notices that every time he talks about finding his way back, he always says "I have to" and never "I want to", unless it's in the context of seeing his two human friends again.
Well, one human friend.
("She probably wants to see me again too. I hope she wants to see me again. I know she didn't mean it, she was just shocked to see..." he absently started moving his hand to touch his Slavemark, but stopped as soon as he realized. Hopefully before Other-Hiccup noticed where his hand was going. "Well, she was just shocked. And I don't blame her! I'd be shocked too. And a little betrayed, to be honest. Like she didn't trust me not to turn my back on her if I knew. Sure, I didn't tell Fishlegs — my Fishlegs — either, but they're different people from different circumstances. And anyway, it was more of a half-turn really.")
(DW Hiccup noted that he never once said what this big friendship-destroying secret was, or what the "it" was that this Camicazi girl didn't mean.)
All this to say, Dreamworks Hiccup isn't particularly keen on finding a way to send Rider the Red back to whatever archipelago he came from.
Then, he gets kidnapped by Thuggory the Meathead, and suddenly things make a lot less sense.
At least now he knows why Rider always looks like he's carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Rest stop AU snippet
Ruffnut & Tuffnut, talking about Dragonese to the kid they know as Rider: "So... you know any swears?"
Book-Hiccup: "It's Dragonese. All the words are swears. Even 'please', if you give it the right context."
(The light of Loki shines in the Twins' eyes. Hiccup realizes that this was, perhaps, not the wisest thing to say.)

Just had a genius idea for the Rest Stop AU: when the Alvinsmen get the wrong Hiccup, they shoot Big Tooth in the shoulder with one of them firework-crossbow thingummys, which is why he doesn't tear Thuggory and co. limb from limb when they take his best friend. and Little Hiccup, knowing that they were after him and his Toothless, puts his Toothless in Big Hiccup's waistcoat pocket so that they won't be able to get them both.
It would have to take place during the winter so that Little Toothless would be hibernating during the whole ordeal.
Also that way, when one of the more intelligent alvinsmen suggests they check for a fang-free dragon and whichever Hiccup has the fang-free dragon is the correct Hiccup, Big Hiccup is the one with the fang-free dragon.
The whole ordeal ends up waking poor Little Toothless up, but at that point they're already on the ship.
Big Hiccup ends up imprisoned with a beginner-to-intermediate level of Dragonese and a very tiny, very annoyed, toothless dragon who forgets to not call Little Hiccup by his real name.
Little Hiccup has to help nurse Big Toothless back to health and also learns how to ride him (the little spot where Big hiccup's prosthetic leg connects to Big Toothless's prosthetic tail fits Little Hiccup's foot perfectly and none of the gang needed a reminder of how young and tiny this kid is)
The night after it happens, with Little Hiccup's permission, The Wodensfang tells the gang the truth, while Little Hiccup sleeps off his exhaustion caused by a day full of guilt-fueled attempts at trying to make everything right on his own.
(He wasn't traumatized by almost everyone he had ever known turning their backs on him after finding out the truth, really, he swears)

Extra Rest Stop au angst: the day before Thuggory kidnaps the wrong Hiccup, the Hiccups get into a fight.
When Little Hiccup is riding with them, they spot a small group of dragons flying through a flaming x-shaped hole in the sky, exactly like what Windwalker flew through to get them there. Dragons singing the chant of the Red Rage.
They find Little Hiccup and try to kill him, but are shocked when dragonfire is met with dragonfire.
Little Hiccup tells them the War doesn't exist here. That Humans and Dragons live in harmony.
They declare the dragons of this world to be "nothing but dumb beasts" and that such a harmony cannot exist on their side, and go after him again. And are stopped again by the Dreamworks Gang.
"They won't let you kill me while i'm here." Little Hiccup says in Dragonese. He still had to be careful what he said, Other-Hiccup and Ingerman were translating right over his shoulder. "I have a lot more allies here then i do over there. I mean, everybody's trying to kill me back in the Barbaric Archipelago. If you took me back there to kill me I'm not sure i'd get out alive! But over here..."
The ensuing fight almost manages to separate Little Hiccup from the Gang and herd him through the Which Way. Astrid yoinks him off of Windwalker right before they get through. Windwalker, of course, follows. The Which Way starts to close and the Red Rage dragons fly back through it before they too get stranded there.
Cue the Gang's relief and sounds of "i can't believe you didn't figure out they were herding us"
"Well i never really did well in my herding-sheep-on-dragonback lessons"
"they were herding us?"
"Yeah! It's classic pack-hunter behavior, separate the weakest-looking one from the rest of the group and then... No offense, Rider."
"None taken."
"But it's fascinating that dragons of different species learned to work together like that. Is that normal for the dragons where you're from?"
"It's a... recent development in their behavior."
"Well lucky for us Astrid caught you when she did, right?"
"Yeah... Lucky."
Then Astrid breaks her silence with "You flew straight for that x-shaped fire in the sky as soon as they made an opening. You... wanted to go back with them, didn't you?"
And, well, It's not like Hiccup can deny it.
The core of the issue is this: Little Hiccup needs to return to find his friend and stop the war. The Gang want him to stay there and not run the risk of dying while they find his friend and try to help stop the war. The phrase "We're Vikings, aren't we? Death's an occupational hazard!" Does nothing to deter them. Wodensfang's speech about Fate and Destiny was met with a resounding "Screw Fate" and "Destiny can shove its ugly face up Mildew's--" "...OKAY Tuffnut, I think we get it." And Little Hiccup's very reasonable statement that they don't know anything about what it's like over there was met with "then tell us so we're not going in blind."
They all go to bed that night slightly miffed at each other.
Then the Alvinsmen arrive, and leave with the wrong Hiccup.
