If you don't see a role that fits with your skills and interests now, keep an eye on the listings. Open Doors Import Assistant

Do you enjoy spreadsheets, self-paced projects, and helping protect fanworks from getting lost over time? Are you interested in the rescue and preservation of fanworks? Do you still guiltily—or not so guiltily—love the first fanwork that opened your eyes to fandom? Open Doors is a committee dedicated to preserving fanworks in their many formats, and we’re looking for volunteers to support this goal. The work we do preserves fan history, love, and dedication to fandom: we keep fanworks from offline and at-risk archives from being lost, divert fanzines from the trash, and more.

Our import assistants contribute to our goal by:

  • Importing works to AO3 from rescued digital archives and fanzines
  • Searching AO3 for existing copies of works that creators have already uploaded themselves (to prevent us from importing duplicate versions when we import an archive)
  • Compiling and correcting spreadsheets of works from an archive to be imported and/or tags to use on those works
  • Copyediting/proofreading works from fanzines that have been scanned from PDFs (to ensure that the scanned works were transcribed properly by the software we used)

The training is self-directed, and so is the work for the most part, though we also have weekly working meetings/parties for people to all chip in and work on tasks together! Import assistants can generally alternate the types of tasks they work on. At any one time, we usually have several tasks of different types available.

To apply for this role, you must be at least 18 years old and legally of age to open explicit fanworks in your local jurisdiction.

If you're interested, click on through for a longer description of what we're looking for and the time commitment. For your application to be considered, you will be required to complete a short task within 3 days of submitting your application.

Applications are due 30 April 2025 [or after 35 applications]

Apply for Open Doors Import Assistant at the volunteering page! If you have further questions, please contact us.

Fanlore Policy & Admin Volunteer

Do you have an interest in preserving fannish history? Do you have an interest in wiki editing, or writing help documentation? Fanlore is recruiting for Policy & Admin volunteers!

Fanlore's Policy & Admin volunteers are responsible for dealing with all the behind the scenes stuff to ensure that Fanlore runs smoothly. We respond to questions and complaints; shape Fanlore's policies, tutorials, and guidelines; and assist Fanlore gardeners and other editors. No extensive experience is required—just a strong interest in documenting and preserving fandom, good communication skills, and a willingness to work with a team and further Fanlore's mission. Join us!

Applications are due 30 April 2025 [or after 40 applications]

Apply for Fanlore Policy & Admin at the volunteering page! If you have further questions, please contact us.

PAC Volunteer

The Policy & Abuse committee (PAC) is responsible for addressing questions and concerns about potential violations of the AO3 Terms of Service. We determine whether reports are about legitimate violations of the Terms of Service, and what to do about them if they are. PAC volunteers correspond directly with AO3 users and collaborate on projects both within PAC and with other OTW committees.

Our main goals as a committee are:

  • to adhere to the AO3 Terms of Service
  • to make our reasoning and processes as clear and transparent as possible
  • to handle all user reports consistently, no matter which volunteer is doing the work
  • to keep every case we work on completely confidential

We are seeking people who can:

  • Commit to working on cases regularly
  • Be patient with rephrasing explanations
  • Ask for help when needed
  • Collaborate both inside the team and with other committees
  • Act in accordance with established rules, policies, and procedures
  • Treat confidentiality and user privacy as a priority

You must be 18+ in order to apply for this role. While English proficiency is required, we welcome applicants who are fluent in other languages, especially Spanish (Español), Brazilian Portuguese (Português brasileiro), Russian (Русский), Chinese (中文), or Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia).

Translation Volunteer

If you enjoy working collaboratively, if you're fluent in a language other than English, if you’re passionate about the OTW and its projects, and want to help us reach more fans all around the world, working with Translation might be for you!

Translation volunteers help make the OTW and its projects accessible to a wider global audience. We work on translating content by the OTW and its projects from English to other languages, such as site pages, news posts, AO3 FAQs and AO3 Support emails. (However, we do not translate fanworks.)

We really need volunteers who speak Afrikaans, Arabic, Basque, Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Estonian, Filipino, French, Galician, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Marathi, Norwegian, Persian, Portuguese-PT, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Welsh—but help with other languages would be much appreciated. If you're interested in starting a team for a language we don't have yet, you're very welcome to!

(Please note that our Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese-BR, Russian and Vietnamese teams are not accepting new members at this time. If you are fluent in one of these languages and interested in volunteering, please consider volunteering for another team within the organization instead.)

Applicants will be asked to translate and correct short text samples and will be invited to a chatroom interview as part of the selection process. More information about us can be found on the Translation committee page.

Applications are due 26 March 2025

TWC Copyeditor

Transformative Works and Cultures (TWC) is an international peer-reviewed Diamond Open Access online publication about fan-related topics that seeks to promote dialogue between the academic community and fan communities. Copyeditors professionally copyedit submissions for TWC according to Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) 18, Merriam-Webster online, and the TWC style guide. Editorial standards are those of a university press.

The copyeditor's main responsibility will be to carefully copyedit word-processed manuscripts to correct errors of grammar, usage, style; normalize presentation of information; check the literature; and ensure consistency of usage of, e.g., presentation, capitalization, italic, and numbers.

Applicants are required to pass a brief copyediting test that will be drawn from live copy (a not yet published article that is currently in production). All returned tests will be assessed and the applicant provided with feedback.

You must be 18+ in order to apply for this role.

Applications are due 26 March 2025

Strategic Planning Volunteer

The Strategic Planning Committee is recruiting for new volunteers! We are a close-knit and collaborative committee of 6-9 people who are tasked with researching, developing, and supporting the implementation of the OTW's strategic plan, which is a written document that articulates the OTW's priorities and direction. The process to establish priorities involves many people across the organization and is an important part of aligning the organization around shared goals; monitoring implementation also provides accountability to the organization's mission and our user community. We are in the implementation monitoring phase of the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan and are looking for organized people well-versed in communication and project management, with experience in goal management and feedback response. Knowledge of data analysis and understanding how to complete research are helpful as well, as is experience using various project management tools, document collaboration software and text-based messaging platforms.

We typically review around 50 applications, induct 2-3 new volunteers and provide training on the committee's tools and processes. We welcome all perspectives and are actively interested in people with diverse views on fandom and the OTW! The Strategic Planning Committee is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and will make reasonable accommodations for candidates who may require them.

Open Doors Technical Volunteer

Do you know SQL and Python or other programming languages and want to rescue at-risk fan archives?

The Open Doors project receives many requests to rescue fan sites that are at risk of disappearing because their owners can no longer maintain them. The sites we import to the Archive Of Our Own range from database-driven archives based on common software packages like eFiction and Automated Archive to hand-coded HTML sites that are over twenty years old!

As a technical volunteer for Open Doors, you will process the contents of legacy sites to do the following:

  • analyse the original data to find all the content and metadata needed for the import
  • remove spam, legacy navigation and personal information from HTML files
  • convert tags to official AO3 tags as specified by the Tag Wrangling team
  • ensure chapters are correctly combined into complete works
  • resolve duplicates, such as works already imported to AO3 by their creators or previous imports
  • convert the cleaned data to MySQL tables in a standard format that can be ingested automatically into the Archive

As the person responsible for ensuring that all the content from the original site is correctly imported to the AO3, you will have an excellent eye for detail and an ability to work independently within the rules of Open Doors. You will also liaise regularly in chat with other Open Doors volunteers, keeping them up to date with your progress on your assigned tasks.

To apply for this role, you must be at least 18 years old and legally of age to open explicit fanworks in your local jurisdiction.

Please note that you will be asked to complete a short coding test (which should take you less than 1 hour, to be returned in 1 week) as part of your application.

We recruit and manage incoming volunteers, handle exiting volunteers, handle all committee set up as well as chair and board turnover. We help answer volunteers’ questions about the OTW or the tools we use, or direct volunteers to the right places. We set up tools for committees and subcommittees, mentor volunteers in their work, and track the service of each and every volunteer throughout their time with the organization. We ensure that every volunteer in the organization has the resources they need to complete their work efficiently and effectively.

This recruitment round we’d especially love hearing from applicants who are interested in regularly helping with our day-to-day work! This includes following checklists to answer tickets related to personnel changes, software access, recruitment setup, and general queries.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a live text-based chat interview.

Applications are due 29 January 2025 at 23:59 UTC or after 30 applications

Apply at the volunteering page! If you have further questions, please contact us.

Policy & Abuse Volunteer

The Policy & Abuse committee (PAC) is responsible for addressing questions and concerns about potential violations of AO3's Terms of Service. PAC volunteers correspond directly with AO3 users and collaborate on projects both within PAC and with other OTW committees.

Our main goals as a committee are:

  • Ask for help when needed
  • Collaborate both inside the team and with other committees
  • Act in accordance with established rules, policies, and procedures
  • Treat confidentiality and user privacy as a priority

While English proficiency is required, we welcome applicants who are fluent in other languages, especially Spanish (Español), Brazilian Portuguese (Português brasileiro), Russian (Русский), Chinese (中文), or Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia).
