Summary
He should have known something was going to happen. Really it should have been obvious. He just didn’t think the rest of the gang would have noticed a change in behavior. He didn’t think they cared enough to realize. He wouldn’t have, he chased them across the world for months and hurt them. Why would they care?

Summary
Zuko realizes his destiny much earlier. As in, as soon as he wakes up in the palace after his Agni Kai and is told he is banished. Unfortunately, he's never been a patient one. So he storms right up to Ozai and tells him what he's going to do. And gets locked up for over three years. Then, one day, he's being pulled out and told he's the new Fire Lord.
A "Zuko never meets the Gaang and suddenly becomes Fire Lord after three years of literal torture" AU. In which the Gaang doesn't know what to think of the new Fire Lord who happens to be the missing nephew of Aang's firebending teacher, Iroh constantly has a headache, and, sure, maybe the world hates the Fire Nation, but the Fire Nation LOVES Zuko, and he can work with that.

Summary
“What about their baby? They had a son, didn't they? "
The smile faded from the princess's face, “Yeah, they had a baby. Chi You, the dragon warrior. "
“He unified the Fire Nation! He was the first Fire Lord! "
"It was a pitiful life."
Zuko tilted his head. What did that have to do with it? Seeing his confusion, she hugged him, “He wasn't human enough to be with humans, but not divine enough to be with him, his father. "
"But he was a hero!"
“Heroes don't always live happily. - she told him sadly - They burn quickly. "

Summary
Zuko is just trying to survive Boiling Rock prison. He didn't make it out on time on the Day of Black Sun and frankly, he's lucky to be alive. His escape attempts have proven futile and he doesn't have any allies to speak of here. His best bet is keeping his head down and trying to survive.
Sokka is just here to break his dad out. It's his fault his dad was captured and he needs to fix this. His plan is working well enough so far; he's made it here, he's disguised as a guard, no one suspects him, now he just has to find his dad and get out.
Blue eyes meet gold. A flash of recognition. Shit just got a whole lot more complicated.

Summary
Knowing Zuko’s family, it was natural for the Fire Nation to be apprehensive of his rule – specifically the workers at the palace. Many of the Fire Lords had used capital punishment, abuse, and banishment to assert dominance and their right to the throne. Those are Zuko’s ancestors, surely he would rule with the same iron fist.
They had forgetten that Zuko was a victim of such rule. And he would prove to the nation and the world that the Fire Nation is no longer to be feared – and neither is he. Because he is not Ozai. He is Zuko. -

Summary
“You remember him,” Chit Sang sounded surprised.
“I remember all of their names,” Zuko admitted. While he was on the ship, his father had sent him every death certificate from the 41st division. There was never any other note, no words from the Fire Lord, just a piece of paper with the name, age, and rank of the soldier who died. Zuko had kept every single one on his ship, reading over every single one and committing their names to his memory. He couldn’t stop them from dying, but they were what motivated him to keep moving, to get back his honor so that he could help prevent deaths like theirs.
.
.
.
Chit Sang's brother fought in the 41st division. Unknowingly, Zuko had become a beacon of hope to those in the Fire Nation whose family had perished in the needless war, to the people who wished for a Fire Lord who will fight for their people instead of power. Chit Sang feels the need to let Zuko know this. -

Summary
Zuko was probably more involved in the gossip around the palace than he had any right to be.
It’s not his fault, it’s really not. It’s just that sometimes he’s sitting in the kitchens (the best place to get the gossip) drinking tea and trying to relax for once, and some of the kitchen staff will start gossiping where he can still hear them. He doesn’t really try to listen in; it’s not his place and he won’t judge the staff based on whatever rumors are running around, but Spirits is it interesting. He tries not to listen too much, or get too invested in it though. Gossip is gossip after all, and rumors hardly ever turn out to be true.
But Zuko absolutely needs to know if Maya from the laundry room broke up with her piece of shit boyfriend.
Or, 5 times Zuko got invested in/meddled in palace gossip, and 1 time he was the subject of the gossip.
