Work Text:

Life had been... Weird, after the war.

Hell, it had been weird even during the war, especially towards the end when they were no longer with the Horde but also not with the Alliance. But, now that everything was peaceful, it was a whole different type of weird. It had been weird before only in the sense that they were no longer picking a side, and hiding instead of fighting. But now it was weird because everything was finally peaceful, and they had never had that before.

The Horde was never peaceful. They literally grew up and lived in a place called the Fright Zone, and were constantly threatened with stun batons and other punishments. None of them wanted to piss off Shadow Weaver or especially Hordak, so they constantly were afraid of fucking up in any way. It didn't help that Kyle in particular was bad at a lot of tasks, meaning that Rogelio often needed to defend him if he didn't want to see his boyfriend get hurt.

Life in the Horde had fucking sucked, life after the Horde had been confusing, and life after the war was unfamiliar. Needless to say, it hadn't been easy, but they still had each other, and that had to count for something.

Kyle and Rogelio had essentially adopted Imp after Hordak had been captured by Horde Prime. The poor thing was so confused and afraid. Hordak had been the one constant in his life, so for that to suddenly be gone scared the living fuck out of him. It also didn't help that he couldn't actually speak. The most he could do was play back things that other people had said. That was fine for back when he was a spy, but proved to be a challenge when trying to talk to his new dads.

They figured it out in their own way, though. Yes or no questions were always good because Imp could just shake his head one way or another. Alternatively, Kyle could shoot out different ideas as to what was wrong and Imp could play back the correct ones. When those didn't work, they always had paper and pens lying around for when Rogelio had something more complicated to communicate.

They had taken a skiff when they first left the Fright Zone. That skiff had essentially become their new home. Sure, it was small, but Rogelio had managed to give it a few small upgrades to make it more livable, plus they could take it wherever they wanted. Lonnie had moved in with them as well. It's not like she had anywhere else to go. None of them did. The only family they had was each other.

Lonnie had been working hard to become a better friend to the boys, as well as a good parental figure to Imp. Sure, she wasn't his mom or anything, and it's not like Kyle and Rogelio were doing a bad job or anything, but they all agreed she should at least be a good influence to the small demon since she was living with them.

The girl had a lot of shit to work through. She had never been particularly nice to either of them. Sure, she hadn't been outright abusive, especially compared to some of the other people in their life, but she definitely hadn't been the kindest to them. Not even in a sarcastic or playfully bullying sense either. Oftentimes, she could just be downright mean.

After leaving the Fright Zone, all three of them were more free to feel whatever they needed to feel and do whatever they wanted to do. Plus, they had Imp. They actually grew to like him once they got to know him as something other than the annoying spy demon that would constantly get them in trouble as kids. Hordak wasn't there anymore. Imp was no longer a spy. He was their son.

They were a family now. A dysfunctional one, sure. And they still had problems, of course. But they had each other, and no one could take that from them.
