Summary:

After about a year things seemed somewhat normal. Through trauma and good memories, Sunny and Basil seemed to be best friends no matter what. Sunny gains feelings for his beloved friend. He will do anything in his power to achieve Basil’s love.

Chapter Text

After we had told the others about how Mari really died, they were distant. Basil and I made up and tried going back to normal. Eventually Kel started talking to us again.
With making up with Kel comes Hero. He wanted to talk. He was frustrated about her death. He wanted to understand better what we did.
It was still difficult to explain why we hung her. It just felt like it was the right thing to do. People bought it as well.
It took a little for Hero to warm up to us, but he did eventually.
Next was Aubrey. She would still visit the church, primarily to visit Mari’s grave. Kel met her and convinced her to talk to us once again. As well as Hero, Aubrey was frustrated. She was confused as well. We again explained how it was an accident and it was not thought out properly. We were younger and didn’t know what to do. It took Aubrey much longer than Hero to warm up to us. She still isn’t our best friend, which is okay. When Kel plans get togethers we’re all able to hang out like old times.
Time passed and things felt normal for the most part. We avoided the topic of my sister and moved on with our lives as much as we could. I kept hanging out with Basil, regaining my crush on the boy. Maybe one day he’ll love me back…

Mintra has been oddly close to Basil as of recently… I thought as I stared at the two. It was painfully obvious that she had a crush on Basil, yet the boy was too oblivious to notice her actions and feelings.
If it’s not clear, I like Basil. I won’t let anyone else have him. I will do anything he wants of me.
I walk towards the two. Basil looked at me and smiled brightly.
“Hi Sunny!” Basil said as he grabbed my shoulder. Slight blush was on my face, but I kept my cool.
“Oh, Sunny,” Mintra scoffed. I looked at her as though she were a vile criminal. If she gets closer I may have to stop her… Though, talking might be okay, it doesn't get rid of feelings… but death does. And I know a thing or two about knives. No one here knows Basil like I do.
“Would you like to have lunch with us? I asked Kel, but he’s with his basketball group,” Basil asked.
“I’d love to,” I said as I made eye contact with Mintra and smiled. She immediately looked at Basil.
“Well, let’s go already! I’m getting hungry!” Mintra said in a snarky tone.
The three of us started walking towards the cafeteria. The smell of roasted chicken wafted through the air.
We walked in and put our things down at an empty table. I put my things next to Basil to prevent her from being close to him.
“Should we go now?” Basil asked Mintra and I.
“Sure whatever,” she said as she took the lead.
I walked next to Basil. “So you two are friends now?” I asked.
“Hah yeah she needed a partner in the gym and y’know… we just got along. She’s not that bad!” Basil tilted his head toward mine.
We went into the lunch line. I wasn’t too hungry so I just got some water. Mintra and Basil both got garlic breadsticks and greek salad. Mintra also got roasted chicken chunks.
We paid for the food and my drink then went back to the table to sit down.
“Sunny,” Basil looked at me with a frown. “You’re not eating?”
“Ah no, I don’t feel hungry. I can eat later.” I replied.
Basil looked at his lunch unsatisfied. He grabbed a garlic breadstick. “Here, please eat it, Sunny,” Basil said as he looked pleadingly into my eyes.
I couldn’t say no. “Fine Basil, but just because you want me to.”
Mintra played with her food. “Basil… are you free sometime this week after school?” She asked, still staring at her food.
“Hm?” Basil hummed with lettuce in his mouth.
“It’s not like you have to, I'm just asking!” She said quickly in a defensive manner.
“Oh uh you want to hang out…?” Basil asked with a nervous tone.
“I mean if you want to…” Mintra said quietly.
“Can I invite some friends?” Basil asked. I could tell that he was nervous about being fully alone with his new friend.
“Uh… preferably not…”Mintra said with a sigh.
“Ah uh sure,” Basil said as he nervously laughed. He then stuffed his face with garlic breadsticks.
Mintra doesn’t know him at all. He’s not comfortable around her.
“Meet me at the Lemon’s Flower Pavilion,” Mintra said as though it was set in stone, some sort of blood pact.
“A-ah yeah, okay!” Basil smiled, trying to hide how nervous he was. I gently put my hand on his arm. He looked at me and gave a sweet smile. I smiled back, a slight blush appearing on my face.
Mintra looked at us with disgust. “Well Basil, I’ll see you later in the gym,” she said as she stood up with her lunch tray and walked away.
I looked back at Basil. He was focused on watching the girl leave.
He turned back to me. “I guess it’s just you and me now, Sunny,” Basil laughed. This made me smile and give a well meant sigh.
I ate the breadstick Basil gave me and he finished his lunch.
“Well, we should head off to art class now!” Basil stood up slowly as he held his lunch tray in his hands.
I nod to him and follow his steps. He threw his trash away and we walked through the cluttered hallways to get to art class.
Once in class we take our seats and wait for our teacher to come into the classroom. Once she joins she explains what’s on the board and lets us carry on with our art projects.
Basil and I were making bracelets for Kel, Hero, Aubrey, and Mari. Ones for ourselves as well. Basil suggested it and I thought it was a cute idea.

Soon the bell is to ring so me, Basil, and the class starts cleaning up except for a few kids ignoring the time.
Basil checks his watch. “Get ready,” he smiled as he grabbed his backpack and pulled it onto his back. I did the same with mine.
We walked towards the doors and the bell rang. A few kids pushed past Basil and I. This made Basil a little shaken, but I grabbed his shoulder and steadied him.
Basil looked at me and blinked instead of saying thanks. I’d prefer his voice but he always gets a pass with how cute he is.
We leave art class and go to ELA. I’m glad Basil told me his schedule ahead of time so I could secretly change mine to be with him. He just thinks it’s a funny coincidence. God he’s so cute.
We arrive at ELA class and take our seats.

The bell rings and we leave ELA class with a new writing assignment. We have to pick a topic about whatever and do extensive research on it. Basil is going to do flowers, obviously. I might do the topic suicide. Not sure yet though.
I wave by to Basil as we part ways. I hate how he’s going to be with Mintra now.
I walk to the library and go in. I feel some hit my back.
“Hey Sunny!” Kel said in a cheery voice as he moved next to me.
“Hi,” I answered back.
Kel grabs my wrist and takes me to our seats and we get ready for class to start.

Kel has fallen asleep.

I wave bye to Kel and go to Basil’s locker to wait for him. I see him walk through the hallway and he spots me. Basil tries to walk faster than he already was. He reached me and I laughed softly at his actions.
“W-what?!” Basil said in an embarrassed, but mostly confused voice.
“Nothing,” I told him as I smiled. He didn’t seem fully satisfied with the answer, but didn’t push any further.
“Are you going to the gardening club with me again?” Basil asked.
“Would that be okay?” I said, wanting to go. I didn’t join a club so I had the option to be with Basil or go home.
“Of course,” Basil said as he gave me a small smile.
“Then I will,” I couldn’t help but smile back as I answered.
⚘ ⚘ ⚘
We arrived at the garden. Few members were seen, presumably the rest busy doing something else. Two members, a female with violet hair and a male with light brown hair, were watering flowers. They looked over at me and Basil and he waved. The two waved back.
I grab Basil’s hand and he immediately looks at me slightly confused and slightly flustered. I blink at him then look at orange flowers.
“O-oh! Those are marigolds!” Basil said as he quickly walked over to them, bringing me along as we were still holding hands.
In truth I was kind of jealous Basil has so many friends. So many people that could hurt him. So many people he could buddy up with and then leave me. I won’t let that happen though. But I merely grabbed his hand to get his attention… and to hold it as well.
I listen to Basil as he rants about marigold. How they have different colours, how they contain lutein, how it’s the flower of the dead and so many more things. I love to listen to him talk.
⚘ ⚘ ⚘
Basil went on around the garden and explained different flowers. He hopes we can continue tomorrow as we didn’t finish the whole garden. I hope so as well.
As of now, I’m walking to my house. I walk past Kel and Hero’s house and see Hector outside sleeping. What a good guard dog they have.
I walk up to mine and pull out my key and unlock it. My mother is still out working currently. I don’t mind that she works till late.
I see Mewo on the couch and pet her. She purrs softly and I partially put a thin blanket around her. She seems to appreciate it.
I walk back to my room and take my backpack down and throw myself onto my bed. I close my eyes and think about Basil.

Aubrey looked at me as though she knew something I didn’t. I blinked at her in confusion. Aubrey looked away for a second.
“Sunny, are you hanging out with Basil again today?” She asked.
“I guess,” I replied.
“Oh, Mintra said that she wanted to hang out with Basil today,” Aubrey said nonchalantly.
“And why are you telling me this?” I asked. Aubrey shrugged and went to talk to Kim.
Why would she tell me that? I can’t say that I hate it, it’s an opportunity to learn more about Mintra. I decided to leave class a bit early. I feel someone grab the back of my shirt and into an empty hallway. I looked at the person that grabbed me. It was a tall guy who looked tired. From behind him, a boy with white hair pops out.
“Hello!” The boy said cheerfully.
I looked at the boy with a confused expression. He smiled at me.
“My name’s Cross!” Cross grabbed the other boy’s arm. “This is Kris!” Kris waved at me.
“What do you want?” I asked, looking at them both.
“Sunny, Sunny, Sunny… I know everything! I want to help you!” Cross said.
“What do you mean?” I said, trying to hide my nervousness.
“I can collect information about different people and share it with you.”
I looked up at the two in slight confusion. “Why?” I asked.
Cross shrugged. “Just for funzies,” He said as he started climbing up Kris’s back. Kris leans down to let Cross sit on his shoulders. “If you want to meet me, go to Frog’s Pond in the garden club after class. Anyways, seeya!” Cross said as Kris started walking away.
After noting that encounter, I decided to go over to Basil's locker. He was sorting books as he was getting ready for his next class. He closes his locker and looks at me.
“Hi Sunny,” Basil said as he smiled at me. I felt butterflies in my stomach. “Hey,” I replied.
“Are you still free after school?” Basil asked. I nod. “Awesome!”
The bell rang and me and Basil walked to our next class. We walk into class and take our seats. Mintra comes up to Basil’s desk. I guess I never noticed her in this class even though she has mint coloured hair.
I listened to their conversation.
“Ah- I’m hanging out with Sunny today,” Basil said.
“Ugh! So what? You’re always with him!” Mintra said. I glared at Mintra. How fucking dare she say that? Maybe it’s because he likes me better?
“Well- uh- because he’s my best friend?“ Basil said with a nervous expression.
Minta rolled her eyes. “Okay, okay.”

Basil carefully picked up a pot of bright red begonias. Mintra convinced Basil to let her join the hangout. We sat on a bench next to each other. Basil explained the flower to us. Like the sun exposure and potting. While he wasn’t paying attention, Mintra elbowed me in my arm. I look at her with a frustrated glare.
“I want to be alone with him,” Mintra hissed under her breath.
I kept my glare firmly locked on her. “So do I but you can’t have everything you want,” I sneered back.
Mintra gave me a bitter look. We both focused back on Basil who turned to us. He set the pot of begonias down with the rest and dusted his gloves off.
Basil smiled. “What’s next?”

I lie down in bed, yearning to have the one I love next to me. One day. And till that day comes, I will do anything needed to make it come sooner.

Basil yawned and continued eating his lunch. I watch him nonchalantly when I notice Mintra slowly walking up to him. Her face was a light shade of pink and her minty-teal coloured hair seemed neater than normal. She was wearing a black crop top-tank top with a stripe texture, a black skirt and belt, black fishnets, and black boots. She looked as though she was trying to impress someone. 

“H-Hey Basil!” Mintra said in a nervous tone as she approached Basil.

Basil looked up at Mintra and smiled. “Hey, you need something?” Basil asked as he tilted his head.

“Uh y-yeah,” Mintra handed a folded up piece of lined paper. “D-don’t open it yet! Wait till hum… period 7? Yeah- period 7!” Mintra said, laughing nervously.

I looked at the note. I’m unprepared. She confessed way earlier that I thought she would. Mintra walked back over to Aubrey’s group.

Basil looked at the note curiously. “Does Mintra seem a bit off today to you, Sunny?”

I raised my eyebrows and then shrugged. Basil pursed his lips in thought. He tucked the note into his pocket.

“Hey SunnYYY! BassILLLLL!” Kel yelled with his arm around Basil’s shoulder. I look behind me and am surprised when the two both slam me down into the ground like a human sandwich.

“Aughhh… Kell,” Basil grunted under Kel’s weight. 

My face turns a shade of rose. Basil is on my fucking chest oh my fucking god. 

“Hey guys!” Kel said, laughing hysterically as he got up. 

I sat up and Basil floppily fell off of me and fell to the ground. I got up and picked Basil up, throwing him over my shoulder.

Basil squealed, seeming confused by my actions. Kel blinked a few times before sneezing extremely loud. I glanced at a bright green paper, the one Mintra gave to Basil. Kel seemed to have followed my eyes, picking up the paper curiously.

Kel opened it and made an odd squeaking sound. “HUH?!?” Kel yelled, putting his hands on his head dramatically, his mouth open wide. 

“W- ah- what, Kel?” Basil questioned from my shoulder.

”THIS IS A FULL ON LOVE NOTE! WOAH BASIL, YOU GOT BITCHES!” Kel yelled, louder than I’d prefer.

I placed Basil back onto the ground. He gave Kel a confused look before noticing the paper in his hand. His face became red. “I- uh- I- uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-“ I covered Basil’s mouth, feeling my chest sink, to stop him from his buffering. 

I look at Basil's red face, feeling slightly worried and agitated. “Oh? Do you like her back?” I questioned. 

Basil’s face lightened. “Oh! Not at all… I just… feel bad I guess? I don’t know how to talk to herrrrr aaaaaaa,” Basil sulked quietly. 

As though Mari herself hated me, Mintra and Aubrey walked by us. And of course, Mintra noticed the note. 

Despite her whisper I could hear her say, “OH MY FUCKING GOD HE OPENED IT I TOTALLY FORGOT—SHIT!”

“AH!” Kel screamed as Aubrey pushed him aside. 

Mintra walked up to Basil. I could see panic in his eyes as he looked at her.

“I- hum… B-Basil…” Mintra’s face heated up, making her looked like an odd coloured peppermint. “I-I love you, alright?!? A-and…” Mintra trailed off, doubt lightly clouding her eyes.

I stood next to Basil, who was still on the ground. “I’m afraid he doesn’t feel the same. Sorry, Mintra,” I said, not really meaning sorry. 

A single visible tear developed in her eye before Aubrey grabbed her hand and walked away. 

I looked back down as Basil, who now looked like he was about to cry. I helped him get up, making sure he wasn’t injured.

I pat him on the back, giving him a reassured smile before walking back into the school.
