Chapter Text
“We’re not married.”
Hange scowled at Levi, who was sitting beside her, then across the desk at Erwin who regarded them both calmly.
“Four-eyes,” Levi sighed, as if he was the one who’d been driven mad this whole time and not her. “Stop being so damn difficult. You didn’t have to drag Erwin into it.”
And yet he was here with her in their commander’s office, willing to let a third party resolve the issue. And from the look of things—Hange eyed Levi’s bandaged head and thought if that was the reason he was acting so weirdly—they needed a third party.
Three days ago Hange had woken up in her lab, as she usually did after pulling an all-nighter, and found Levi to be acting odd. Yes he usually nagged her to eat and take care of herself but this time it was over the top. Even with his head injury from their expedition the day before, he only fussed over her. The strangest thing was that he kept touching her, a hand on her shoulder or wiping her cheek or digging his fingers into her back while chiding her not to sleep in a chair.
That was too much physical contact by Levi standards and Hange was quickly realising that her heart wasn’t taking it well either. It was the first time he was doing something like that and her long buried feelings for her colleague were dangerously threatening to surge up. But then he just went ahead and casually made it worse.
“You didn’t come to bed last night, knew I’d find you here.”
For a second Hange thought she’d heard him wrong, “What?”
“I did get a peaceful night without you hogging all the blankets but you’re gonna end up with back pain sleeping in a chair so often. Sleep on the bed next time.”
Her mind had short circuited somewhere around hogging all the blankets and the rest of his lecture fell on deaf ears. What the hell?
He was moving to retie her hair and commented how dirty they’d gotten and if he should give her a bath when she swatted his hand away and stumbled back, confused, surprised and very much flustered. She asked what was wrong with him and several arguments later found out, according to Levi, they were married. Had been for a few years now.
So, after avoiding him for two days following that incident and indulging in many more arguments about each other’s marital status, they both found themselves in Erwin’s office.
“You tell him, Erwin. We’re not married. Why would two soldiers under your command get married? You wouldn’t even allow it.”
“I’ve told you five times already, shitty-glasses. It happened a year after I joined the scouts so I could get legal citizenship on the surface.”
“Nothing of that sort happened,” she snorted. “Right Erwin?”
The commander regarded them both thoughtfully, then said, “I believe that only the couple themselves should get to decide what their status is, so only you two can figure it out.”
“But we’re not a couple!” she protested.
“No, you’re not,” Erwin agreed.
“See? Even Erwin says so,” she threw Levi a smug look.
He stared right into her eyes and said, “Look, if you’re mad at me about what happened when you threw yourself at that abnormal—you deserved that. I know you’re angry I killed it but you can’t be so reckless all the time. If all this drama is because of that, then stop being childish, four-eyes. And come back to our room as well.”
He almost sounded desperate. Her heart did another funny little lurch and Hange decided this wasn’t good at all. He needed to stop talking like that.
“Look, you just hit your head on that tree too hard, shorty. Now you’ve got all your memories muddled up. Erwin just said we’re not together.”
“No, I'm completely fine,” he said. “He doesn’t consider us a couple because the marriage was all on paper, just a strategy of his to let me live here without a problem…” he hesitated and avoided their gaze. “Until a couple of years ago. We both kept it secret.”
The commander smirked, eyeing Hange with an amusing gaze which clearly said this was the best piece of entertainment he’d had in weeks.
“Fuck you, Erwin,” she glared. “You’re enjoying this.”
“Hm, perhaps,” he said. “It’s not every day we get to see Levi like this.”
“This isn’t right,” she cried. “Take Levi to the infirmary or something and get his concussion checked. He’s making up entire memories of things that didn’t happen. This could be serious!”
“Oi, I’m not making up anything.”
“Literally nobody except you believes we’re married,” she said. “Erwin doesn’t, neither does Moblit nor the brats. I asked everyone, Levi.” Her voice softened, “It’s just you and it’s worrying me. Let’s go see a doctor.”
He shook his head firmly, “The brats don’t know about us because we never told anyone except Mike and Nanaba. And Erwin knows because it was his idea.”
“Well I asked Mike and Nana too and they also agree with me.”
“They’re just messing around, making this harder than it is and having a good laugh over us.”
“We still have separate rooms,” Hange challenged. “How can you call us married if we’re not sharing a space?”
“That was to make things look professional,” he hesitated again and Hange saw the same smirk climbing higher on Erwin’s face. “The others didn’t know we’d taken the marriage contract seriously and we decided to keep it that way.”
“Bullshit, you’re finding excuses for everything,” she said.
Levi massaged his temples and said, voice pulled taut with forced patience, “Hange, In all the crazy years of your life, when the fuck are you going to take me seriously?”
“I am taking it seriously!” she yelled. “You’ve gone out of your mind!”
“Hange, calm down,” said Erwin. “And take a seat. I won’t have you two strangling each other in my office.”
“Then do something about this! He’s been driving me crazy for three days!”
“Levi,” the man turned to her supposed husband. “What do you want from her?”
“Tell her to stop fighting with me,” he grunted. “And return to our room too, she’s been sleeping god knows where for three days.”
“Our room my ass,” she huffed. “That’s just your room. I have a bed right there in mine and that’s where I slept.”
Erwin turned to her with that look in his eyes whenever he wanted her to compromise in a situation. Her stomach fluttered uneasily.
“Hange, I know it’s difficult but just listen to him this time. Only until we’ve figured out how to treat his head.” The refusal on the tip of her tongue was cut short as he added, “Commander’s orders.”
“You can’t do that!” she cried.
“I’d prefer to have some peace in the headquarters and you two’ve given us anything but that for the last three days. Sorry, but you can’t deny the order.”
Levi stood up, grabbing her hand, “That’s settled then, let’s go now. And stop making a fuss.”
This was not the plan. This was not the plan at all.
All she had to do was confront Erwin, settle their confusion and wait for Levi to get better. If anything, he wouldn’t refuse Erwin’s orders and leave her alone. But it had all backfired so spectacularly she hadn’t even been able to argue. So here she stood, in Levi’s—their’s according to him—room while he moved around with ease.
He’d changed into his nightclothes and without the belts and Survey Corps’ crisp jacket he almost looked soft. Smooth around the edges and unguarded. The familiar fluttering returned to Hange’s chest and maybe her pulse was doing something weird because she could feel it in her wrists too.
Levi climbed onto the sheets and looked back at her with a gentle tilt of his head, “Come on.”
When she hesitated he said, “If you’re still mad at me… I promise I’ll capture two new abnormals for you with my squad. They’ll be all yours.”
She shook her head, almost laughing. “I told you, I don’t care about that abnormal. It’s just,” she fiddled with her shirt, avoiding his gaze. “This isn’t you Levi, you’ve messed up your memories and I’d be taking advantage of you like this.”
She didn’t miss the pang of disappointment she felt, hearing her own words. Deep down her stupid, stupid heart wanted this even if it wasn’t fair to Levi. And that made her angry at herself.
“There’s nothing wrong with my memories.”
“That’s what you think. Besides I’ve never shared a bed with you in my life, how do you expect me to suddenly be fine with this?!”
He turned away at that, as if she’d hurt him. Then climbed under the sheets, facing the wall on the side and said nothing. Hange wondered if she should just bolt. This was temporary anyway, a misunderstanding; it wasn’t like she was actually hurting him.
Just as she touched the doorknob, Levi spoke up in a low voice.
“Look, I know this is probably too new and strange to you but I’ve been used to it for two years. And seeing you so reluctant around me, that doesn’t feel very good four-eyes.”
She sighed, letting her hand slip away from the door and walked back. Fine. She’ll humour him just this time. It was hard to say no when he talked like that. She slipped in beside him, trying to keep some distance between them. But the bed wasn’t exactly meant for two people and she barely managed it with her back to him.
Closing her eyes, Hange tried to lull herself to sleep but it was impossible. She was acutely aware of Levi’s breathing behind her and her whole body was tingling.
She took a deep breath, hoping to relax.
And then arms snaked around her from behind, pulling her flush against a warm body.
A squeak, which she was pretty sure was meant to be a startled scream, escaped her mouth.
“Hey! What’re you doing?!” A rapid blush was climbing up her cheeks. She squirmed in his hold.
“Trying to sleep,” he replied nonchalantly, like he hadn’t just sent her heart into a frenzy. And he pulled her even closer so she felt his breath on her nape, and tangled their legs together as if he’d done it his entire life.
“Can’t you stick to your side?”
“There are no sides in such a small bed.” She was pretty sure she heard a smile in his voice. His hands moved, drawing idle circles over her waist. Equal parts of guilt, nerves, and something warm and soft stirred within her. In a different situation, with his memories clear, she’d have loved this.
Hange turned over to face him, and removed his arms from around her, trying to explain why she shouldn’t even be in his bed and he wasn’t himself right now. Anything she had to say died in her throat when he surged forward and kissed her neck.
He grabbed her again and pulled her close, this time more firmly, and continued to press his lips over her neck and collarbone. Soft and feather pecks, slowly turning into sleepy kisses as he inhaled deeply.
Hange didn’t move to stop him this time. Couldn’t.
“It’s fucking hard to sleep without you,” he murmured, lips brushing her neck. “The insomnia gets worse. Nightmares too.”
And she just… decided to let it happen. Her body relaxed and she hummed, finally wrapping her own arms around him in reciprocation. Levi looked up, surprised and she smiled softly this time.
“You can sleep easy, I’m here.”
Then slowly, imperceptibly, his own lips curled up and Hange nearly gasped at the sight.
This was the first time she’d seen him smile and she told him so. He snorted and said that was far from the truth. She guessed it was another thing his false memories showed him. They talked quietly for a while, he filled her in on things from those fake memories—like how she loved it when he washed her hair, and they had ‘cleaning days’ every Sunday where they’d declutter both their rooms, or how she’d always drag him out to observe flora and fauna of yet another spot she found interesting.
It was a nice life he painted in her head. Drifting off to sleep, Hange almost wished it could be her reality.
In the next few days Levi didn’t agree to get his concussion checked out, insisting he was fine. Instead he spent a surprising amount of time with Moblit, seeking him out at odd hours and talking quietly. Hange didn't think much of it, perhaps it was another effect of his memory alteration.
Erwin assured her things were under control so she went about resuming her research and spending much of her time in the lab. Levi came in occasionally to sit nearby to share tea or finish paperwork and she'd be lying if she said it wasn't endearing.
One day, late in the evening he stepped in as usual while Hange was studying the vaporisation rate graph of titan flesh from different locations in its body against a regeneration rate graph from the same areas.
She was in the middle of spotting an extremely interesting trend when Levi tapped her shoulder.
She turned, annoyed at being disturbed at such a crucial stage, “What—”
He shoved something into her mouth roughly and the next thing Hange remembered was the sensation of falling and darkness rushing in.
Levi gazed at the mess of a person he called his wife, lying unconscious on their bed. Moblit stood beside him, scratching something over his notebook.
“Think it worked?”
“I'm about ninety percent sure, sir,” said Moblit. “We can only confirm after she wakes up.”
There were dark circles under the assistant’s eyes; he'd worked hard enough for an antidote. Levi dismissed him with a word of thanks and sat down on the bed, observing Hange and her slow, peaceful breathing.
After finding out all memory of their marriage had somehow been wiped clean from her mind, Levi consulted Moblit as he spent the most time with her after him. Apparently Hange had picked up a weird plant or fungus from beyond the walls and it had fascinated her to no end.
For days she'd fiddled around with it doing things Moblit couldn't understand. But he guessed that was the reason for her sudden and very selective bout of amnesia. So he set about to create an antidote and end this madness.
Their friends, of course, had had a wonderful time watching him run after her every day. Not only did the truth about their relationship come out, Erwin had practically watched him in delight while he all but begged Hange to come back to their room again. And Mike and Nanaba played along with Hange, only adding to the drama. They were going to regret this, he'd make sure of that.
Trust Hange to whip up something crazy enough to even make her forget their relationship. She would receive an earful too after waking up.
With a tired sight Levi eased himself down, facing her. His fingers reached out and smoothed the unruly strands of her hair, the creases around her collar. She was chaotic even in sleep.
“Tch. You're a handful shitty-glasses.”
But a handful he'd chosen to love.
