Summary
“What are you doing with that?” he says with a bit of nervous laughter.
“Gonna do your makeup”, Patrick replies gruffly. He coughs and tries to make himself sound friendlier, though he just comes off as awkward. “Um, like, your eyes and stuff.”

Summary
The day melts into night, and he is back on the streets, and you are back to your laptop, typing away like it’s going to mean something in the end. This one is about a girl who Joe had found with half her organs missing. A heart and her left lung have been located so far, but not the rest. When Pete comes home with an appendix wet and shining in his hands, you swallow that lump in your throat, the one that longs to ask Why do you keep doing this? You thought you could be enough for him, but you’re not. You thought you could fix this. Make things a little better.
But it’s not getting any better. Because there’s this thing who looks like your dead best friend but isn’t, and he moves around in his skin like he is trying to escape it.

Summary
Pete comes home with that look in his eyes, the kind that churns your guts and makes you breathe hard enough for the both of you. He says he knows where the nest is.
Pete, you want to tell him, stupidly, as if it even matters, It's not a nest. They aren't birds. But you don't, you don't ever open your mouth as he pours it all out, it's got to be eating him up inside, it's got to be fucking burning.
"Burning", he mumbles. Hand slick with blood from the meat, saliva from the dog. "That's what I'm going to do."
When he leans in and kisses you, you don't expect it, the taste of mint. Wrigley's gum, toothpaste. He pulls off and smiles because he must be so satisfied with himself — as if it's going to make you forget. But for a moment, it works, because that's what you do. You force yourself to forget.
