Summary
The dinosaur pauses mid-step, turns its head to look straight at them, and makes a breathy huffing noise. After a tense moment, it looks in another direction and huffs again. Then another direction. And then, contrary to all of Steve’s current hopes and dreams, it looks back at them.
Steve swallows and makes a fist. He’s going to have to punch a dinosaur, he just knows it. However well it may have started, this is shaping up to become the least relaxing vacation he’s ever heard of.
(Or: Steve and Bucky’s S.H.I.E.L.D.-mandated vacation takes a sharp turn toward dinosaurs.)

Summary
“Steve, what dinosaur is out here making rope in the prehistoric woods? What dinosaur wears fucking hiking boots and walks completely upright?”
Yes, okay, point to Bucky. But they can’t exactly help walking, and without boots they’d still be leaving footprints. And it really is a smallish bit of forest on a huge planet…
Bucky bundles the rest of the pterodactyl in some ferns to dump a mile or so out from their camp later. “We’re going to be on Ancient Aliens, Steve. We’re going to be the ancient aliens.”
(Or: Not all of Bucky’s concerns are logical. Some of them are just plain ridiculous. But Steve is willing to help him hide from the History Channel.)

Summary
“You’re dreaming again. And I need you to wake up, Steve.”
Steve closes his eyes in a long blink, and sighs. “I’m awake now, Buck.”
“About damn time,” he mutters.
Bucky pulls him close and wraps his arms around Steve’s shoulders, and Steve can feel the tension and the relief warring with each other in how tightly Bucky clings. He slides his arms around Bucky to hold him just as tightly.
“I’m sorry,” Steve whispers. “I’m sorry to make you worry, Buck.”
“I’m not worried,” Bucky says, his voice harsh. “I’m fucking terrified. You’re going to walk off a cliff or wander out into the open to get squished like a bug.”
(Or: Steve and Bucky wrestle with the prehistoric sandman.)

Summary
Bucky might put on a grumpy face about all this, but this sort of thing is right up his alley. In a lot of ways, this is the stuff of Bucky’s childhood dreams, even if he doesn’t remember those dreams. He’d always been reading stories about people stranded on islands, stranded on Mars, stranded in cave systems. Space travelers, sailors, explorers… It’s not really a surprise that Bucky wants to make a boat and go see what’s further down the prehistoric coastline.
What is a surprise is Bucky’s idea that they ought to do this without using the knives.
(Or: Steve and Bucky have "The Talk" about prehistoric knife rationing.)

Summary
Bucky shrugs and goes back to spacing cockroaches out on the palm spine. “Variety is important to avoid a nutritional deficit,” he says, like he’s describing how cereal is part of a well-balanced breakfast. “It’s not like we’re eating them alive. Except that first one, I guess. But otherwise, the ethics are sound.”
Right. Because the ethics are Steve’s biggest concern about the situation, naturally.
(Or: Steve and Bucky taste the Jurassic.)

Summary
After another few minutes, Steve stops humming, sits up and frowns. “What is that?” he asks. “The one you got stuck in my head. I know it but I can’t place it.”
“Monty Python,” Bucky grunts. Thwack goes the rock, not missing a beat. “Lumberjack song.” Thwack. “Seemed appropriate.”
“Yeah?”
Bucky stands upright with a wince and a groan, leaving the wedge where it is, but letting the rock drop to the ferns at his feet. “Well, I’m a fucking prehistoric lumberjack, Steve, and I am okay.” He runs a forearm across his brow and turns to face him, careful not to get his feet tangled up in the smaller branches and spent wedges littering his work area.
“I’m more than okay,” he adds, no evidence in his voice of anything beyond playful boasting and a hint of breathlessness from exertion, though Steve knows he’s got to be hurting. “I am the shit.”
(Or: Steve and Bucky do some prehistoric carpentry.)

Summary
“You know the Blue Planet episodes where the flying fish escape their predators by swimming super fast toward the surface and then gliding in the air as long as they can, and maybe they’re lucky and plop down far enough away that whatever was after them can’t find them?”
Steve nods. “You think gigantic teenaged murder dolphin was doing that?”
“Yeah,” Bucky says. “But it didn’t get far enough away.”
(Or: Steve and Bucky realize that there’s always a bigger fish.)
