There was a Night Fury standing in front of him, living, breathing, and growling as she stood protectively in front of Shadow Milk, the Beast he had shot down during an attack on his kingdom.
One Light Fury had managed to survive the old hunts, he had freed her himself, cradling the fledgling gently in his arms. Listening to the endling Fury cry as he stepped out of the cage filled with broken eggs and old bones, carrying her over the bodies of the hunters who had taken her.
Supposedly, no Night Fury had been so lucky.

(this is an AU of a dream I had one night of an alternate version of the red death aftermath, but Valka stayed in Berk Hiccup's whole life, and it focuses on Hiccup's recovery after being injured!)
When Hiccup is gravely injured saving Berk from the Red Death, his survival hangs by a thread and he has to lose his lower left leg. With Valka at his side, Stoick and the village are forced to reckon with what they nearly lost.
