Her large violet star-filled eyes are my sky. Her warm breath on my face is the wind. Her skin is the earth I wish to rove and explore for the rest of my days. Here in this place, it doesn’t matter that we are from different courts. It doesn’t matter that she isn’t pure-blooded. She smiles, more beautiful than any spring rose, and moves to close the small distance between our lips. My eyes close in anticipation, but I don’t feel the soft delight of her lips upon my own. Helion’s brow furrowed. Eris wasn’t implying-
“Your affair with my mother bore fruit,” Eris said bluntly, lacking much of the courtly manners he usually maintained. “We cannot keep him safe at the Forest House. Father has been suspicious for some time and… we fear what my father will do to him, if he ever receives proof of his parentage, which he’s sure to get with him in the same house. We can’t guarantee what his powers will be, or who he will resemble in time.”
Eris looked down at his brother, stroking his tiny red head with his thumb. His tone softened as he gazed at the tiny babe in his arms. “Mother has already named him Lucien. I know it would mean a lot to her if you would keep his name the same. She sent you a letter explaining everything,” he nodded at the low table in the middle of the arrangement of chairs, where a folded letter appeared with a pop. “She needs you to take Lucien. Protect him, raise him how she wishes she could raise him.”

The “car accident” that triggered her labor, and her amnesia, wouldn’t change that. It’s just that ever since she brought him home from the hospital, she has felt like something is missing. It doesn’t help that “home” is Elain’s cottage. Beautiful, but tiny, and certainly not big enough to house a quickly growing newborn. Maybe this new job offer will be the missing piece to her puzzle.
