To a young Kazuto Kirigaya, MMOs and other online games were a form of escapism- a way to be free of the real world, even if only briefly.
Low-spec VRMMOs helped this immensely, even if the sensation wasn't fully what the youth wanted.It wasn't until the advent of the NerveGear rig and the announcement of Sword Art Online that Kazuto's interest in the VR medium was piqued. Full Dive Virtual Reality- a system that allowed one to essentially put themselves into a game with a level of immersion never even considered before. For someone like Kazuto, this was a godsend.
