Summary
Michael "Mike" Adler grew up in Echo, though he never really had a fondness for the town since it seemed to suck the life out of everyone and tragedy seemed to occur for as long as it existed, tragedy he knows far too well after the death of a close childhood friend but Chase and the others were his lifelines in such a place full of darkness.
Still, things change and so do people as he got older, and not for the better as life taught him that not everything is sunshine and rainbows, but if there's one thing he does know, it's that Echo is a place full of secrets lurking around the next corner, secrets that are desperate to stay hidden.
When an event forces Mike and the others to confront their fears and traumas that turn tangible and dangerous, they must find the strength to face them in a town that is not keen on letting the past go.

This is the story of Deacon, a boy who was raised in a suburban hell before moving to an even drier hell. There, he met the Echo group and became close with all of them, particularly Sydney. When Sydney died, Deacon felt broken, and isolated himself from the others until he eventually drifted back, only to stick with a choice few of them. The event left everyone in a haze...but Deacon came to realize something else had changed.
Ever since Sydney's death, he could almost hear him sometimes. See him, staring at him through a window or in the hall. He thought he could just be going crazy, but then he realized it was something much, much worse.
Deacon will soon find out why Sydney still seems to be haunting him years later, why Echo itself feels like a grave, and why he can't seem to stay away no matter how hard he tries. But hopefully...he can also find out why his mother moved him out of their old home, and why his father went missing just as he was born. Before it's too late.

This is primarily a plot-driven fic, with romance only being a subplot. I don't go easy on the characters, but I promise massively cathartic moments for such an angst-filled fic.
Fair warning, this fic is ABSOLUTELY not for people who can't stand heavy gore.
Edit: Act 1 has been reworked. The original never sat well with me with how bad it was, so I ended up having to fix a lot of the logical inconsistencies and add more content.

What happens when you don’t get away with murder? Many things could have happened that day. In most worldlines attached to the most cursed town in the US it ends in death. In this one? Something different. Maybe more unfortunate? Or maybe less.
Chase doesn’t murder Sydney, but the altercation with Sydney did ruin his life. Ripped away his friends, got him sent to a reform school for boys. Got him sentenced to five years of PTSD from a place shut down for neglect and willful endangerment, and that was AFTER the coverup. Now Chase is back in Echo and hates literally everyone there. The Hum has him in its cross hairs, the Tetanus Alley Gang is the only source for weed in the whole damn county, and no one wants to give the psycho-killer a chance. Will Chase be able to grow out of it? Become something other than another tool of evil?
