Death was always a notion that Lance could never decide on, regarding his feelings towards it. It had taken so much, from so many, from many era’s of time throughout history, but it was not as if it was done with the idea of sadistic intentions. Lance, growing up, liked to see death as an entity, because through his eyes, it was more than just a concept. To him, Death was what ‘The Book Thief’ portrayed it as, an entity with a persona of neutral outlook, merely doing its work, with an air of honesty and truth that many saw as cruel, others saw as welcoming, and the few like Lance, who just understood and accepted it’s forthcomings.

Lance thought everything would be better once he found his resolve. Once he was finally able to get his shit together and stop antagonizing Keith 24/7. He thought once he got his emotions under control they'd finally be able to move past their differences, work together as a team, see eye-to-eye on something for once.
But he'd never been great at anticipating Keith's reactions to, well... anything, really.
After crash landing on an isolated planet with no way of contacting the castle for rescue, Lance is forced to face the repercussions of ignoring the red paladin for an entire month. After everything he'd put Keith through, after everything Keith had put him through... they can put aside petty feelings of jealousy, envy, and loneliness long enough to stay alive for rescue, right?

To protect the planet, to make sure they have a home and loved ones to come back to, Keith agrees to leave Earth behind with only Lance and an apparently sentient alien war ship for company. The Blue Lion has to been seen leaving and can't be seen returning, not until the Galra are no longer hunting them.
So here Keith is, with Lance and Blue, exploring the universe and figuring how to survive.

In that week, Lance draws parallels to how their lives can shift and become better when Keith returns from battle, and how this new chapter may bring forth a new wave of prosperity to his home and Keith’s. To, perhaps, their shared home. So long as Keith returns.
And he will return.
He must.
He has to.
Lance knew his role from the start - a consort, a political pawn, a pretty face with a purpose. He never imagined that purpose would feel so much like surrender.
