Maxwell just tuned out the conversations instead, glancing around the street. It was dark, and unlike home, where the street lamps took up entire avenues, and the light pollution was so strong you could barely make out the clouds, here, the stars were scattered on full display. Not that Maxwell liked stargazing. He didn't. But he couldn't help his mind from straying, and his legs, too, as he glanced around the street and felt himself drawn towards the patches of voices outside of the bars and those establishments his dad would call rowdy-
"Where are you going?"
Maxwell turned around quickly, expecting his father's stern expression or Samwell's weary one, but instead just found himself facing the wide-eyed girl - Olethra - from before.

When Olethra's parents pass tragically, Comfrey isn't approved instantly for custody. Instead, Olethra is taken in by a rather different family - but the Gotches stay on the ground, and Olethra... adamantly refuses to.

Every family has their roots, trees, branches, and leaves. Every family has their knots. This is the Gotch family's. The boys childhood was average, for a wealthy family that funded adventurers. The boys themselves were not, as it would seem.

“Yes, Zood will be facilitating the treaties themselves,” answered Longspot, “But if we were to wait until the treaties were over to have a working relationship with Zern, then we would lose out on many innovations and insights from them. We need to ensure your grandfather’s legacy. The quickest legal connection we could make that would allow us to have the necessary relationship would be for you to marry a prominent figure from Zern”.
Maxwell’s mind stalled. “I need to marry someone from Zern? Aren’t they primarily Automata?”
Longspot squeezed Maxwell’s shoulder. “Maxwell. It would only be until we have a signed treaty, at which point you can annul the marriage and marry a proper girl from Gath. I can’t ask any of your older brothers to do this, Maxwell. Only you understand how important Gath’s relations with Zood and Zern were to your grandfather”.

"Maxwell!" He startles in the doorway and finds his grandmother waving him towards her. "Longspots youngest you know." She says lightly to the man and woman she is sharing a tea-table with. Maxwell is acutely aware of the eyes of every one of Convivia's friends and acquaintances on him as he crosses the floor to her chair but she seems entirely oblivious to them after her introductory remark.

Maxwell thought that he would be able to get away from the demands of his father and the crushing weight of his family’s legacy when he decided to take the Zephyr. And meeting Olethra, finding the secret radio code, gathering the rest of the original crew of the Zephyr—he thought that he had finally hit his lucky break. He felt more alive than he had in a while during the fight with Mordecestershire, felt an actual challenge, felt his blood rushing in a way it never had before. His desire to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps was stronger than ever now that he actually had a visible goal. No longer was he going to be the black sheep of the family. He was going to bring back the spirit that Cadswitch Gotch originally strived for.
