Everyone was connected to their soulmate by a string from their heart.
It certainly complicated things when one of them had a heart that was detachable and the other couldn't fathom why his string kept disappearing.

Summary
Oh, he was mad. Mad about a lot of things. Mad at the Professor for all the questions she didn’t answer until it was too late, mad at Straka and the Queen, Ludmila, mad at Mordecestershire all over again as he used the wing suit, and—fuck it, okay, maybe he was a little mad at Torse too.
“I always considered you a friend, Maxwell.”
Fucking bullshit.

Summary
Through a mishap with stupid Zoodian mushrooms, Maxwell has ended up with the ears and tail of a hare. Torse is very normal about this.

Summary
Maxwell knew he shouldn’t take his focus off his own target, but his eyes instinctively sought Torse across the battlefield. They landed on him just in time to see a sword thrust perfectly through the iron ribs of his chest plate and heard the tip strike metal, the light leaving Torse in an instant as he fell inanimate with a loud clatter.
(or: Caught in an ambush, Maxwell sees Torse go down and fucking loses it)

Summary
Maxwell looks away to clench his teeth, swallow back bile. In the aftermath, his mind is terrifyingly blank. Winded and empty. He had been thinking so loudly and desperately, in the scramble to the portal, that he was certain everyone else could hear it too. All conscious thought was pinpointed to one goal: Torse, get to Torse, just a little closer. Letting him go was an impossibility. Doubly so when, with the lights of his visor flickering, Torse had looked at him, said his name. If he—when he’s in proper working order, Maxwell has choice words for him about timing.

Summary
“It, uh, takes over me sometimes,” he says. His voice is quiet, almost lost beneath the sound of the air rushing around them. “It’s sporting and I’m good at it, but then there’s something else. Beneath my skin, and sometimes it just… bursts out and I like it too much and I can’t stop myself.” He can’t bring himself to speak any louder, can’t bring himself to believe that someone else is hearing him say this. He’s a rowdy and he’s delighted in the rebellion, in the moments of abjection when someone can see the gleam of skillful violence in his eyes and flinch back. Violence is a means to an end, but that’s not all it is to him. “And it’s also the most interesting thing about me. The only thing, really, about me.”

Maxwell has been a fighter, much longer than he’s been an adventurer.
