“Shidi,” the older boy whispered, “Listen to me. Stay here, do not make a noise, and do not go anywhere. I will have a quick look and return as soon as possible.”
The older boy raised a hand up to gently push away the hand grasping his arm as if his life depended on him, but the younger boy only held on to him tighter. Young Zhou Zishu turned to the younger boy who shook his head, silently pleading for him not to leave.
“Shixiong, Zhen Yan…” He spoke in a soft voice, remembering how his senior martial brother had told him to lower down his voice, “Zhen Yan is scared. Where are father and mother? Is someone here to hurt them again? Shixiong, do not leave Zhen Yan.”
“Zhen Yan,” the older boy’s voice was soft and gentle as he moved a hand up to caress the younger boy’s cheek, “Don’t be afraid. Shixiong is just going to have a quick look. Do not move around and wait here for me, understand?”
Although the younger boy was reluctant to agree, he could only nod his head in agreement as he had no other choice. Quietly and obediently, he stayed in the dark place alone.
He waited.
