Summary
Dirk Strider, the Prince of the relatively peaceful kingdom of Byrgenn, has been managing to make it through from one day to the next, his life filled with training to one day inherit the crown from his older brother, the King.
One very bad, no good night later, and both Dirk and his best friend slash knight Jake English are sent running for their lives, scurrying through the forests and countrysides of the Gaean continent in search of saftey, shelter, and some way to fight back against the demon that robbed them of their home.

Try as he might, Dave remembered nothing from the first four years of his life.
There were three signs of imminent upheaval. First, the King of Derse disappeared without a trace. Second, the Queen of Prospit dropped dead. The third sign was the return of long-lost royalty.
Not like any of this was Dave's concern. Not the war between Prospit and Derse, not the horrorterrors of the Furthest Ring, not the failings of some dumb monarchs. He was a nobody. Not like Rose, a bona fide Seer of Light. He wasn't sure why she wanted them to go to Derse, but he followed her, anyway. Like he always did.

Dave Strider wrote the book on irony. Literally. Well, not a book, but a peer-reviewed academic paper with over 200 footnotes. Billionaire, movie producer, and now bona fide scholar. Oh, and primary financier and ironicist of the North American resistance to the Baroness of Crockercorp. It's 2006 and the sea levels are rising too fast, the food is full of "vitamins" that make you passive, and information is disappearing from the internet at the Baroness's whim. Dave joined the resistance long before his breakout movie success with SBaHJ; Rose's visions left no doubt that the two of them would be on the frontlines of the fight to save the world. He just hadn't expected Rose to ask him to house one of their fellow freedom fighters for a while, or for him to have *such* a nice ass. Yeah, he wrote the book on irony, so he knows exactly where this is going.
