"Mat? Are you awake?" Rand asked, his voice almost drowned out by the loud noise of rain pattering on leaves.
"Yeah," he answered, just as another strike of lightning raced across the sky. The glance it gave him at Rand's face was brief, but he saw the fear. It was swimming in his eyes, showing in the way his eyebrows were drawn together, the way his lips were pressed into a thin line. His own fear reverberated with it, and his grip on the dagger turned white knuckled.
"What do we do now?"
Mat didn't know. Usually, during thunderstorms, he and his family all gathered in the kitchen, and silently prayed to whoever was listening that their house would not be struck down by lightning. But they weren't in Emond's Field, where they could hide inside their houses, they were alone underneath a bush in the middle of a plain.
Or, a small part of the boy's trip to Caemlyn, written in the spirit of Inktober.
