Summary
All it took for the day to go horribly wrong was a ridge in the pavement. Curt was firing at their pursuer, his hand steady, knowing that his aim was true. Then he stumbled, and his hand jerked to the right as he tried to catch himself, his finger hitting the trigger and releasing the bullet with a loud bang.
He cursed, not taking the time to see what the bullet had hit, frantically adjusting his aim, wincing as a bullet whizzed by him, inches from his face, took a deep breath, and fired.
The man fell, and he let out a breath of relief. They had made it. He felt the stinging pain in his side from where he had been shot earlier, and pulled the makeshift bandage tighter around the wound.
“Owen? We have to move.”
Curt looked around, but couldn't see him. "Owen?"

The world was hazy. Thick clouds of dirt drifted through the air, ash settling over the rubble like a fine layer of snow.
Owen crawled over the remnants of the facility, the second to last weapons facility used by Chimera. He could see Curt lying amidst the destruction, not moving except for the slow rise and fall of his chest.
He could feel his leg burn with pain, but didn't stop until he was by his partner's side. Owen couldn’t see if Curt was injured; there was so much blood and dirt around them that he couldn’t tell if it was from him. He forced himself not to look too closely. Curt couldn’t be badly injured, not like this, not when they were so close to being done.

The next time Owen visited him, he was wearing a suit. It was rare that Curt had ever seen Owen dressed up. Unlike Curt, who liked to dress to the nines any time life presented the opportunity, Owen preferred more casual, comfortable, and practical outfits. The fact that Curt was seeing him like this could only mean one thing: tonight was the night of the party he had mentioned on his last visit.
Curt finally gets to leave his prison for one evening. He has a plan to escape for good, but Owen has plans of his own.

He wants to scrape his nails down his chest until its red and raw as his scars were at first, wants to shatter every bone and let it heal wrong, wants to see the look in Curt’s eyes when he asks Owen how could you do this to me?
He wants Curt to cry like Owen did, sitting on a cot in a medical unit somewhere out in Russia, when he realised that all that waiting and wanting and loving had been for nothing. That he was never coming back.
But he can’t lay a hand on Curt Mega. He can't. So what else could he do to soothe the fire burning under his skin?
