Summary
Dean has burned Cas' body and that makes his death definite. The only thing left for him to do is to drown himself in alcohol and hunting, a pale echo of his father. So when Sam finds the strange case of a town that no one seems to be able to get out of, Dean goes with him to investigate with only white noise in his head.
But something strange happens when Dean crosses the town's municipal boundary without realizing it. He suddenly finds himself living a life that isn't technically his own but feels like it's his: he's survived the Hunt, has a house, a white picket fence, and an happy apple pie on the windowsill.
And most importantly.
Cas is alive.

The night John Winchester dies, Dean drives aimlessly through the city until he finds himself stopping at a bookstore he’s never noticed before. He doesn’t know why he stops. He doesn’t know why he goes inside.
The place is warm and inviting, even if the shopkeeper is a little robotic. While browsing the shelves, Dean finds surreal books like histories where the Titanic never sank and JFK was never assassinated.
And then he finds his shelf: rows of books bearing his name. Some are pasts he never lived. Others are futures he never could have dreamed. All of them are impossible lives. The shopkeeper tells him the only way to leave is to choose one. When Dean refuses, the bookstore turns against him, plunging him into a nightmare with only one way out: choose.
What does free will mean in a place like this? And what happens to those who refuse to choose?

But after Henry passes and leaves nearly everything to John, Dean is at loose ends. A fellow shop owner on the small town square takes a chance on Dean and that’s how he comes to work beside Castiel, who looks at him like he’s somebody special and Dean…isn’t really sure what to do with that. With Castiel’s encouragement and a whole lot of meddling from their friend Charlie, Dean comes to realize that his old fashioned skills aren’t as useless as he thought and may even lead to online fame.

Castiel is alive—which is fantastic, but with it comes the realization that Castiel is very much alive and five feet from Dean at all hours. In an effort to distance himself emotionally and also to investigate a spur-of-the-moment case, Dean finds himself in the awkwardest sexual situation of his life—getting cockblocked by the ghost of a nun in the back of a sex shop in coastal Florida.
Except, as soon as he gets back to the motel, Castiel can't keep his hands to himself—and frankly, neither can Dean. In a series of events that he can barely keep track of, Dean juggles an obnoxiously horny store clerk, Castiel's apparent long-term love affair with Dean's everything, and a ghost that refuses to leave the three of them alone. Now, if only Dean could answer the question—how is it all connected, and why now, of all times, does he finally realize that he's in love with his best friend?
