    Onii-chan? he thought. Something you call your older brother. The familiar girl tried to help him up, ushering him from where he was laying down in the cold snow in front of the doorway and inside the small home where the sickly sweet smell was stronger. The girl paled as soon as she opened the dilapidated door, but she steeled herself and guided him inside, and it was then that he saw it, the carnage that was inside of what used to be a quaint little home. Corpses of people strewn about carelessly, their blood seeping through the tatami floor— Mom, Takeo, Hanako, Shigeru, Rokuta — seemingly against his will, his knees crumpled down onto the floor, tears filling his eyes as his throat let out the most agonizing sound…

    And it all came rushing back.

    His name was Kamado Tanjirou.

      Tomioka stiffened. Nezuko stared at his back resolutely and kept going.

      "You have lost someone dear to you, and as a result you decided to push everyone away. You have given up on the world. Even though those people in your very backyard is trying reach out to you– you refuse to take their hand. I think that's cowardice."

      Tomioka turned to her with an unreadable expression, but the words kept flowing.

      "The day I lost my family, did you know it wasn't even supposed to be me who traveled to town? It was supposed to be Onii-chan. But he injured his ankle, so I had to go. If that didn't happen, I would have been with our family when Kibutsuji attacked. Perhaps I would have been the one who got turned into a demon. Perhaps I would have died."

      Nezuko glared at Tomioka. "All things considered, it could have been me. But I will never– ever – say that I should have been the one who died, or the one turned into a demon. That would be like spitting on my family, who never would have wanted to see me dead. That would be like spitting on Onii-chan, who would have never wanted me to be in his place. Tomioka-san, I live on and fight because I intend to continue on the flames that my family fostered within me. To live to the fullest is what they would have wanted for me. That's why, even if it hurts I will seek to better myself. Even if it hurts, I will continue to create lasting bonds. Even if I lose people all over again, even if I find myself back in a sea of grief, I will not be a coward. Because if I do not make the most out of my life, the people I've lost would not be able to rest."

    In his sleeping clothes.

    “T-tanjiro?!” their mother asked from the other side of the room where she’d been building the fire to prepare their breakfast. He didn’t respond, not even closing the door behind him. Their mother looked over to Nezuko who met her worried gaze.

    “He had a bad dream,” she said softly.

    But something told her it was worse--so much worse--than that.

    When Rokuta wouldn't settle down for anyone but Tanjiro, he and Nezuko swapped places on that fateful day. She went down to the village to sell charcoal while he stayed behind with a growing sense of dread as the smell of blood and death lingered on their mountain. Muzan attacked the Kamados that night. However, when the first thing he saw upon entering their household was Tanjiro, with his red eyes and red hair and hanafuda earrings, he quickly gave into his sadistic need for revenge against a man long dead.

    Tanjiro was turned into a demon, and Muzan let the rest of his family live. He was sure that the boy would wake up and devour everyone, thoroughly sullying Yoriichi's legacy. Tanjiro did no such thing. Tomioka Giyu did not pay a visit to the Kamado family until well over a year later, and with these small but significant differences, everything changed.

    Nezuko was the adorable little sister of Tomioka Giyuu, the only living family left for the blue-eyed black-haired man.

    Ever since their older sister, Tsutako, sacrificed herself to protect them both from a demon attack when they were children, Giyuu had taken on the responsibility of taking care of Nezuko with all his heart. He would be the strong and loving older brother that Nezuko needed.

    Not long after the tragedy that struck the Tomioka household, a man named Urokodaki Sakonji —an alpha of average height wearing a red tengu mask and a blue cloud-patterned jinbei — took both cubs under his wing and cared for them as his own.  He taught Giyuu full concentration breathing and the ten forms of Water Breathing. The elder brother was determined to become a strong demon slayer in order to protect his younger sister.
