original summary:
Things aren't going well for Nate:
-He's accidentally burned down his workplace, which is also where he lives.
-His best friend Tyson has to move to Canada for work, leaving behind his husband Gabe and their daughter Birgitta.
-Birgitta, who's also Nate's goddaughter, is so unhappy about her family being pulled apart that she's accidentally made her plushies able to talk.
-Bernie, one of those plushies, can not only talk, but has also become a real dog magically bonded to Nate, much to the displeasure of both dog and human.
-Nate keeps making a fool of himself in front of the very attractive new customer who seems to be flirting with him.
How on earth is any of this going to work out okay?!?!

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate?” Cale chuckled in disbelief, making eye contact with Sam before laughing some more. Alex walked out of the showers and over to his stall confused as to why everyone was laughing.
“What’s going on? Did I miss something?”
“Sam found EJ’s book full of Shakespeare’s poems and plays.” Evan informed him with a grin as Alex sat down. Alex scoffed with a small grin, turning his attention to drying his hair off.
“Guys, guys, listen to this one,” Sam said before clearing his throat and becoming dramatic, his voice grabbing Alex’s attention as he fixed his eyes on the short French-Canadian man in front of him, “if music be the food of love, play on; Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, the appetite may sicken and so die.”
Wow. Alex could definitely get used to that.

“E- Erik. Tell me they’re not lying.” Gabe breathes. The other line is quiet. “They’re not.” He whispers. Gabe freezes before he laughs. “You- you’re coming back! Oh my God, oh my God!” EJ chuckles. “I am. I wish I could talk more but I need to pack so I can get there ASAP.”

Summary
The hand that sifts through his hair is gentle, and Nate angles back, relaxing as blunt nails glance across his scalp. Yeah, fuck yeah, he’s so into this. The soft morning-after shit is the absolute best.
Nate—giddy at being free to touch—goes for it with euphoric abandon, reaches out to grab a hold of that ten-out-of-ten-absolutely-zero-notes ass.
God damn.
“For what it’s worth, I think you’re handsome, too.”
Nate drags in a deep breath, satisfaction—a craving satiated—warming him as his eyes slip closed. He's full to the brim, content, wants to hang suspended here forever. It's a second, maybe two before he hears the clearing of a throat, and it sends him rocketing back to reality. His gaze snags on his laptop, eyesight blurring with sudden, narrowed focus. The tiny light indicating that his camera is active and recording is glowing, taunting in sour apple green.
Fuck.
Jesus fucking, fuck-all, fuck.

Summary
Nate reached out to grab Sid by the wrist, stopping him from leaving. He barely managed to get out, “Sid, are you okay?” before Sid had turned back around. And then Nate barely had a second to process what was happening. Because Sid had closed the distance and was kissing him? Like. He was actually kissing him. Why was he kissing him?
Or: Instead of using his words like a big boy, Sid kisses Nate, leaves and doesn't talk to him until they play each other a few weeks later.

EJ doesn't know why Nate wants to visit him in Denver, ten years since they last played on a team together. Ten years since they did anything more then text each other, or pass generic greetings through mutual friends. But his home is empty; and it'd be fun, right? What's the worse that can happen?

Summary
“Fine, fine,” Gabe says nervously. “Let’s get this meeting started, then.” He clears his throat. “We’ve all been noticing our teammates’... situation, let’s say.”
Devon snorts.
“All of us here are close friends with the two of them, or have been impacted by their annoying behavior,” Gabe continues.
“You can say that again,” Jo mutters under his breath.
“So we need to come up with a plan to get them to stop dancing around each other,” Gabe concludes. “But I have no idea what else to do. I’ve tried everything. I sent them on romantic dinners. I got them to take a yoga class together, and the only thing that accomplished was them being annoyingly stretchy and going to yoga regularly. I even gifted them a helicopter tour of the mountains together thinking it would be a nice romantic adventure and nothing happened. I need your help.”
“Can’t we just talk to them about it?” Sammy asks.
Mikko chimes in. “I tried that, and Nate just laughed at me for a long time and then left the locker room.”
“I tried it too,” Josh says. “Cale just gave me a weird look.”
“But they would be so good together,” Ross says. “I don’t understand why they won’t listen to us. It’s ridiculous.”

"I’ll stop bothering you,” Sid says. “I can put the block back up and we can forget this ever happened.”
Put the block back up? Every small bit of hope Nate had felt since Sid opened his door disappears in an instant. Of course Sid doesn’t actually want Nate, he just wants to make sure Nate is fucked up enough that no one else can have him either.
“Right,” Nate says coldly. “Just block me permanently again. Forget I exist. That’s been working great for the last two years.”

how does an ex-av and what some would call a “waste of a first overall pick” end up head coach of a brand new ahl team, made up of a ragtag assortment of bottom-liners, college kids, and oddly wise europeans? well, don’t ask ej because he doesn’t really know either.

Summary
In the locker room, everyone knows Nate and Sid have a…unique dynamic, and his teammates can't resist teasing him for it. Between Nate's occasional winces and the all-too-obvious post-game blushes, it’s clear Sid’s in control, and Nate’s practically wrapped around her finger. Despite his best efforts to keep things private, the boys make it their mission to rib him at every opportunity, turning every locker room moment into a chance for some good-natured, over-the-top banter. Nate’s in too deep—and maybe he doesn’t mind it as much as he lets on.

Summary
During the season, days of the week don’t matter. There aren’t weekdays and weekends, and there’s no point in complaining about Mondays. There are game days and non-game days. That’s it. Some might count travel days as a separate category, but honestly, when they’re on the road, travel and game days frequently happen together. The only distinction that has ever mattered to Nate is whether he’s going to be playing a real game or just practicing and working out.
He’s learned that, over the summer, he needs to keep track of real days to some extent. He can’t call his sister to see if she wants to have lunch on a Thursday, because she’ll just remind him that she has a full-time job. He can’t show up at his favorite restaurant on a Monday, because it’s closed on Mondays. He can’t call Jo on Friday, because he called Jo on Wednesday, and he promised himself he would put at least three days between calls.

Summary
A rush of people enter the locker room all at once, and Nate automatically glances over at the chaos. Josh, Devon, Casey, Ross, Sid, and Miles all enter the room together. Nate closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, releasing the last bit of tension from his muscles. It must be just about time to start his stretching routine.
Wait.
Nate’s eyes fly open.
One of those people was not like the others.
